Benthic invertebrates from River Nyamweru, a tropical forest stream in western Uganda were sampled bimonthly between April and December 1997 using a modified Hess Sampler. A total of 3708 benthic fauna from thirteen taxonomic orders were collected. Benthic samples were dominated by Diptera (mainly Chironomidae) representing over 60% of all the organisms, followed by Ephemeroptera. Benthic invertebrate densities ranged from 63 ± 9.03 organisms/m2 to 300 ± 33.36 organisms/m2, with higher densities occurring during the dry season and lower densities during the wet season. The benthic community structure in River Nyamweru reflected mainly collectors and scrapers as the most important groups (83%), while predators were very rare (3.1%). River discharge influenced benthic abundance, with more invertebrates at lower discharge and fewer invertebrates at higher discharge. The applicability of the River Continuum Concept to tropical forest stream situation is discussed.  相似文献

Changes in species composition, stem abundance, and basal area of trees taller than or equal to 10 m in a medium altitude tropical rain forest at the Ngogo study area, Kibale National Park, Uganda are described for the period between 1975 and 1998 ( n  = 23 years). Two enumeration episodes were conducted in 263 plots of 5 m by 50 m during 1975–80 and 1997–98. During this period, species richness decreased by 3% (from 92 to 89). Species diversity (H') also declined slightly from 2.97 to 2.86. The number of trees recorded in the sample plots decreased by 8% (from 2545 to 2329), while basal area decreased from 49.48 m2 ha−1 to 48.68 m2 ha−1. However, stem abundance and basal area increased for some species.  相似文献

Two 1 ha plots of undisturbed upper montane rain forest in southern Ecuador were sampled for all trees with a dbh ≥ 5 cm. An extraordinarily high α-diversity for a forest near treeline is described. The "non-ridge forest" plot at 2900 m elevation has 75 species and 28 families ha-1 and is believed to represent an advanced stage of succession whereas, the "ridge forest" plot at 2700 m elevation with 90 species and 38 families ha-1 has a more rapid turn-over rate probably due to a more unstable environment. Downslope forces (soil creep) are discussed as a possible cause for 32–44% of all trees being inclined more than 30° in the moderately steep terrain (average slope 20° in both study plots). The plot of "non-ridge forest" is characterized by a much greater biomass whether expressed as basal area (44 m2 versus 15 m2) or stem volume (214 m3 versus 52 m3), while the density is equally high (2310 versus 2090 trees ha-1) in both plots. Families with Family Importance Value >25 / ha-1 are Clusiaceae, Cunoniaceae, Melastomataceae, Myrsinaceae, and Ternstroemiaceae.  相似文献

Mature trees have already experienced substantial increases in CO2 concentrations during their lifetimes, and will experience continuing increases in the future. Small open-top chambers were used to enclose branchlets that were at a height of between 20 and 25 m in the canopy of the tree species Luehea seemannii Tr. & Planch. in a tropical forest in Panamá. Elevated concentrations of CO2 increased the rate of photosynthetic carbon fixation and decreased stomatal conductance of leaves, but did not influence the growth of leaf area per chamber, the production of flower buds and fruit nor the concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates within leaves. The production of flower buds was highly correlated with the leaf area produced in the second flush of leaves, indicating that the branchlets of mature trees of Luehea seemannii are autonomous to a considerable extent. Elevated levels of CO2 did increase the concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates in woody stem tissue. Elevated CO2 concentration also they increased the ratio of leaf area to total biomass of branchlets, and tended to reduce individual fruit weight. These data suggest that the biomass allocation patterns of mature trees may change under future elevated levels of CO2. Although there were no effects on growth during the experiment, the possibility of increased growth in the season following CO2 enrichment due to increased carbohydrate concentrations in woody tissue cannot be excluded.  相似文献

Inventory data for trees ≥ 10 cm DBH from a hectare plot are compared to data obtained by the Point-Centered Quarter Method along a line transect from the same locality in Anangu, Amazonian Ecuador. The one-hectare quadrat plot of 100 × 100 m had 734 individuals, 153 species, 46 families, a total basal area of 22.2 m2, and an estimated above ground tree volume of 240.5 m3. The line transect had a calculated density of 728 individuals per hectare, which included 239 species, 51 families, a total basal area of 34.1 m2, and an estimated above ground tree volume of 409.6 m3. Of the 20 species with the highest IVI, only four were shared by the two samples. The most important species were Quararibea ochrocalyx on the hectare plot and Iriartea deltoidea on the line transect, constituting 26.6 and 13.3% of the individuals, respectively. The five families with the highest FIV on the hectare plot (Bombacaceae, Arecaceae, Moraceae, Caesalpinaceae, and Lauraceae) and on the line transect (Arecaceae, Moraceae, Meliaceae, Mimosaceae and Caesalpinaceae) constitute 40.4% and 35.4% of the Family Importance Values of the samples, respectively. The Point-Centered Quarter Method used along a line transect reflects maximum diversity and provides average values of density and tree size in the area. The quadrat plot reflects the local structure and composition of the forest within the plot.  相似文献

Abstract .1. The pine sawfly, Neodiprion autumnalis , infests ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa , growing at low densities near the bottom of an altitudinal gradient in Arizona, U.S.A. The relative importance of host-plant quality vs. natural-enemy effects in determining the spatial distribution of this sawfly was examined over a 3-year period.
2. Field and laboratory bioassays were conducted on all life stages of N. autumnalis at two forest stand densities (high ≥ 23 m2 ha–1, low ≤ 7 m2 ha–1) and at two elevations (bottom slope = 2390 m, top slope = 2540 m). These experiments were used for constructing life tables of N. autumnalis that compared the effects of host-plant quality on oviposition preference and progeny performance with the effects of natural enemies at different tree densities and elevations.
3. Life-table analyses determined that mortality attributed to host-plant effects during the egg and larval stages had the largest impact on fitness between tree densities and elevations.
4. Natural enemies caused a significant reduction in progeny survival, but their effects were similar across all tree densities and elevations during egg and larval life stages. However, cocoon-stage survival did vary between tree densities and elevations due to natural-enemy effects.
5. It was concluded that the observed oviposition preference for, and higher progeny performance on, trees at low densities and bottom slope elevations were caused primarily by host-plant effects.
6. These results further the argument that heterogeneity at the resource level (i.e. bottom-up forces) determines potential outcomes of multitrophic level interactions.  相似文献

Habitat edges as a potential ecological trap for an insect predator   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Abstract.  1. Ecological traps, where animals actively select poor habitat for reproduction over superior habitat, are generally associated with birds at forest edges. This study examines oviposition preference, predation, and parasitism rates in the mantid Stagmomantis limbata to determine the potential generality of this phenomenon.
2. Egg case (oothecae) densities were measured across two edge types (cottonwood and desert scrub) within desert riparian ecosystems. A positive edge effect in oothecae density was found with an approximate three-fold increase in density at cottonwood ( X edge = 0.05 oothecae/100 m2 vs. X interior = 0.015 oothecae/100 m2) and desert scrub ( X edge = 0.20 oothecae/100 m2 vs. X interior = 0.06 oothecae/100 m2) edges ( P  < 0.01).
3. Rates of bird predation were significantly higher for oothecae at desert scrub edges and showed a trend of higher predation rates at cottonwood edges, suggesting that riparian habitat edges may be acting as an ecological trap for this mantid species. There was no effect of edges on oothecal parasitism rates.
4. These results provide an example of the effect of habitat edges on a generalist insect predator and indicate that an ecological trap may exist with respect to one of its natural enemies.  相似文献

Coffee fruit production, frugivorous activities and seed longevity were investigated during two seasons. The average densities of fruiting coffee trees during the first sampling period ranged from four to seven per 25 m2 and during the second sampling period, four fruiting trees per 25 m2 were estimated. Fruiting coffee trees were significantly less than the non-fruiting trees ( P < 0.05, t -test). Periods of maximum coffee fruit fall coincided with those of lowest rainfall. Coffee fruit yield per tree from ground collections was 7–40 m−2 in 1992 and 16–38 m−2 in 1993/1994. Split coffee berries ranged between 71.7% and 83.6% of all fruits collected from the forest floor in the 1993/94 sampling period. Coffee seeds collected from the forest floor were mostly undamaged. Black and white colobus and redtail monkeys were observed to feed on ripe coffee fruits but did not crush the seeds. Coffee seed viability declined rapidly during storage. Seeds left on the forest floor survived longest, those stored under laboratory conditions lost viability fastest, and those in cold storage showed intermediate longevity.  相似文献

Five individuals of four civet species were captured and followed by radiotelemetry in a mosaic of dry tropical forest in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand. Observations were made on a fifth, arboreal species which was never captured. Radio-collared civets used overall areas ranging from 3.1 to 17 km2 with average monthly ranges from 0.72 to 5.4 km2. Average monthly ranges, home range centre shifts and activity radii showed a linear increase with weight and size of the individual, both within and between species. Despite individual differences, there were similar behavioural responses to extrinsic seasonal changes. Civets had activity levels of 50–55% and displayed nocturnal activity patterns. The four smallest civets used trees as resting sites extensively while the largest civet, Viuerra zibetha , was always located on the ground. Faecal analysis indicated that civets fed on at least 18 fruiting tree species as well as rodents, insects and crabs. At least one of the fruits found in civet faeces, Cassia fistula , was not eaten by other major frugivores in the area. The civets showed a preference for mixed deciduous and dry evergreen forest over dry deciduous dipterocarp forest, which had a lower abundance of known food items. The role that civets play as seed dispersal agents may help in the maintenance and structuring of tropical forest communities.  相似文献

Persistence of vascular plants in a Norwegian boreal coniferous forest   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Persistence, the tendency of a species to remain in its original position and not to colonize new sites, is studied for the most abundant forest vascular plants (25 species in spruce forest and 7 in pine forest) in Solhomfjell, Gjerstad, S Norway Data sets included presence/absence in 199 meso plots (1 m2) and 3184 subplots (1/16 m2), analyzed over a 5 yr interval, and a subset of 50 meso plots and 800 subplots, analyzed for six consecutive years Relationships between species variables (seedling frequency and mobility rate compiled from the literature, and cover and abundance means in the study area) are studied, and related to species optima along ecologically interpreted DCA ordination axes Vascular plant mobility may increase towards nutrient-poor sites Dominance in the boreal forest floor is mostly by clonal species Persistence was calculated for different temporal (1-5 yr) and spatial (1/16 and I m2) scales Persistence patterns in the spruce and pine forests were similar, but persistence decreased towards the xeric pine forests One main component of variation in persistence was demonstrated by PCA analyses the absolute level of persistence, which is related to seedling recruitment vs clonal growth, and within clonal species to ramet longevity, abundance, mobility, growth pattern and mode of surviving the infavourable season Minor components of variation in persistence were related to spatial scale and temporal scale Persistence characteristics were species-specific and varied little between years Numerous species characteristics were relevant to interpretation of variation in persistence, indicating a continuous, multidimensional variation in life history characteristics  相似文献

We examined structural and physiological traits relevant to the phenology of the tropical dry forest (TDF) pioneer tree Cochlospermum vitifolium . Despite marked seasonality in rainfall, meristem activity occurred throughout the year. Leaves were produced almost continuously during the rainy season, while leaf shedding started early during drought, before changes in soil water content were observed. Phenological activity under drought included flowering and fruiting of leafless trees; bud break and shoot extension took place before the end of the dry season. Low wood density of C. vitifolium stems (0.17 g/cm3) and lignotubers (0.14 g/cm3) provided water and starch storage needed to support phenological events such as branch extension, leaf flushing, and reproduction during the dry season, and probably also contributed to survival following mechanical damage and fire, typical of early TDF successional stages. Lignotuber water and starch contents showed substantial seasonal variation, declining from the beginning of the dry season to their lowest levels at the time of reproduction and dry-season flushing. Stems progressively replaced lignotubers as main storage organs as tree size increased. Evidence for a role of water stores in buffering daily water deficits was weak. Leaf water potentials remained above −1.2 MPa and stomatal conductance below 350 mmol/m2/s, suggesting that gas exchange during the rainy season was limited to prevent xylem cavitation. Leaf shedding occurred when early-morning and mid-day ΨL converged at the rainy–dry season transition, without changes in lignotuber or soil water content, suggesting that leaves of C. vitifolium are closely tuned to atmospheric drought.

Abstract:  A Middle Jurassic fossil forest, thought to have been growing at high southern palaeolatitudes on the Gondwana margin, is described from New Zealand. Fossil stump horizons are exposed in stratigraphic section within the Urawitiki Measures Formation, Murihiku Supergroup. Tree bases were preserved by silica permineralisation in a sandy braided river setting. Fossil wood is referred to 'abietinean-type' and Agathoxylon . A total of 238 stumps were mapped with measured diameters allowing tree height estimates of 9–40 m. A two-dimensional area (102 m2) allows an interpretation of tree density (2353 trees/ha), biomass (579 t/ha) and stand basal area (146 m2). This horizon is interpreted as a highly productive, young, dense tree stand probably actively regenerating on a flood-cleared surface. Annual growth rings suggest a clearly defined growing season with a rapid onset of favourable temperature, light and water supply conditions at the start and a similarly rapid deterioration at the end. Mean ring width is 1·10 mm and the maximum 9·67 mm. Mean Sensitivity values suggest both 'complacent' and 'sensitive' growth patterns. Broad palaeoclimate interpretations suggest a humid, warm regional climate throughout the growing season.  相似文献

Rose Bengal was cytotoxic to the following bacteria at the concentrations given in parentheses (highest concentrations of dye in mol/1 at which growth occurred on nutrient medium): Brochothrix thermosphacta and Deinococcus radiodurans (1 times 10-6 or less); Streptococcus, Micrococcus, Staphylococcus, Bacillus, Arthrobacter and Kurthia spp. (1 times 10-5–1 x 10-4), and Pseudomonas spp. and Enterobacteriaceae (5 times 10-3–1 x 10-2 or greater). These organisms were killed rapidly when suspended in illuminated (170 μE/m2/s) solutions of Rose Bengal (1 times 10-4 mol/1) providing oxygen was present. Singlet oxygen was identified as the lethal agent, because the rate of killing was increased by dissolving the dye in deuterium oxide while the organisms were protected against photoinactivation by L-histidine or crocetin. Yeasts from chilled foods were killed in illuminated solutions of Rose Bengal but a light intensity of 315 μE/m2/s was needed for a death rate comparable with that of bacteria. The yeasts present in a range of chilled meat and dairy products failed to form colonies on Rose Bengal (5 times 10-5 mol/1) media exposed continuously to modest illumination (55–80 μE/m2/s).  相似文献

D. maximum is a dominant species of outer reef flats in the Red Sea, reaching densities of about 22/m2 and biomass of 15.8 g dry tissue/m2. A few individuals attached to loose rocks are found inside the breaker zone but they may have been dislodged by heavy seas from the outer reef flat. D. maximum feeds from a mucus net which is spread by wave action over the substratum. Hauling the net occurs at approximately 13 minute intervals throughout the 24 hours and lasts about two minutes. Neighbours with overlapping nets stimulate each other to haul and reduce feeding efficiency. The net is grasped by a pair of lateral jaws, tugged free of the substratum by rotation of the body and ingested by a zipper-like action of the lateral and marginal radula teeth. The robust, central and lateral teeth become worn, possibly while channelling out the substratum to accommodate new shell. Defaecation occurs about 2.4 times an hour, amounting to 10450 kcal/m2/y. Females may brood simultaneously at least 11 egg capsules at various stages of development, which are suspended by stalks from the roof of the shell and pass through a dorsal slit in the mantle. Each capsule contains–500 embryos which develop into larvae with simple, coiled shells 0.33 mm in diameter. There is no planktonic phase. Adult shells amount to 2.5 kg/m2 on the outer reef flat, while dead shells are often occupied by blennies. Although D. maximum is not a specialized filter feeder, the highly developed ciliary mechanisms suggest that filtering may be an auxiliary feeding method.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Grassland fragmentation is expected to influence the abundance of different invertebrate species to a different extent. Fragmentation-related effects are of particular importance in species that interact with many other species.
2. The density and spatial distribution of nests of 15 ant species in experimentally fragmented calcareous grasslands at three sites in the Northern Swiss Jura mountains were examined. Fragments of different size (0.25 m2, 2.25 m2, and 20.25 m2) were isolated by a 5-m wide strip of frequently mown vegetation. Control plots of corresponding size were situated in adjacent undisturbed grassland.
3. Three years after initiation of the experiment, ant nest density did not differ between fragments and control plots. Six years after initiation of the experiment, however, ant nest density and forager abundance were higher in large fragments than in large control plots. Ant nests tended to occur more frequently along the edge of fragments than in the core area. Persistence time of nests of the most abundant species, Lasius paralienus , tended to be shorter in fragments than in control plots. Furthermore, persistence time was longer in nests situated close to the fragment edge than in nests in the core area.
4. Effects on nest density, edge effects on the spatial distribution of nests, and the relationships between nest density and environmental factors were more pronounced when only nests of L. paralienus were considered. The implications of these findings for plant and other invertebrate species are discussed.  相似文献

Results of a study of the fish community of the leaf litter banks in the lower reaches of the Taruma-Mirim, a small central Amazonian stream is presented. The Taruma-Mirim is an acidic, blackwater, forest stream which flows through igapo forest and enters the Rio Negro close to Manaus. The commonly held view that these blackwaters hold an impoverished ichthyofauna is challenged. The studied litter banks hold about 20 species of fish, all of which were found to live within distinct subregions of the habitat. Average fish density was about 100 individuals m−2. Absolute population sizes were found to be remarkably small; within a 200 m2 area the most abundant species had a population size of about 104 and the least abundant <102 individuals. It is argued that high species richness linked to specialized habitat requirements and small population size indicates considerable population stability. The factors leading to the evolution of such species richness are discussed.  相似文献

Fish production in Oued Sebaou, a seasonal river in North Algeria   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fish were sampled by electrofishing at three contiguous sites 26 km from the source of Oued Sebaou, a seasonal river in North Algeria. River discharge ranges from 300 m3s−1 in the peak of the rainy season to 0.1 m3s−1 at the end of the dry season. Extensive gravel extraction from the river bed takes place during the dry season.
Two species were recorded at each site: Barbus callensis , which is heavily fished locally, and Anguilla anguilla . The three sample maximum likelihood Zippin method was used to estimate mean density and standing crops, which were: barbel, 452 fish ha−1, 5.33 kg ha−1; eels, 149 fish ha−1, 3.04 kg ha−1. Estimated average biomass and production were: barbel, 2.31 kg ha−1, 4.27 kg ha−1 year−1; eels, 1.51 kg ha−1, 2.60 kg ha−1 year−1.  相似文献

Summary Germinable seed stores of 5- and 8-year-old rehabilitated bauxite mine pits in south-west Western Australia were assessed before and after burning. These seed stores were compared to those of adjacent unmined Jarrah ( Eucalyptus marginata ) forest, to identify at what age fire can be reintroduced, in order to measure restoration success and reduce fire hazard. Soils were sampled in early summer (before fire) and late autumn (after fire). Before fire, the mean topsoil seed bank of 5-year-old sites was 2121 seeds per m2 while 8-year-old sites had a mean of 1520 seeds per m2. Only the 5-year-old sites were significantly different from the forest mean of 1478 seeds per m2 for the same season. After summer burns (and possibly due to seasonal effects) topsoil seed banks of rehabilitated areas (sampled in autumn) decreased by an average of 53 per cent. Topsoil seed banks of 5–8-year-old sites were resistant to lower intensity burns, with 362 seeds per m2 of native species surviving mild burns and 108 seeds per m2 of native species surviving after an intense summer fire. The topsoil seed reserve of 5–8-year-old rehabilitated areas had a high proportion of annual weed species while the forest sites had high levels of subshrubs and native annuals. Low-intensity burns did not alter the composition of life-forms in the soil seed bank, while intense burns favoured annual weed and shrub species. The results indicate that it is not appropriate to introduce fire to rehabilitated areas before 8 years, due to limited fuel reduction benefits and possible adverse effects on obligate seeding species. The large proportion of weed species in the soil seed bank of young rehabilitated areas is a concern, and remains a major consideration for future disturbance of these areas.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. We measured biomass and light/dark bottle productivity of macrophytes in a Wisconsin stream throughout one growing season. Except for a brief period in early spring when a Cladophora glomerata -filamentous algal community was dominant, Potamogeton pectinatus was the dominant macrophyte species in Badfish Creek.
2. Maximum community biomass was 710 g DW m−2, with a maximum above ground biomass of 620 g DW m−2 and a maximum below ground biomass of 120 g DW m−2. Annual productivity was estimated at 1435 g DW m−2 year−1, with a calculated P/B of 2.01.
3. In situ net production averaged 2.83g C g AFDW−1 h−1 Net positive carbon gain by the P. pectinatus community occurred when water temperatures were above 15°C, and daylength at least 12h. This is correlated to the onset of tuber germination in spring, and the point of maximal biomass decline in autumn.  相似文献

Grazing by the crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard) on the abundance of submersed sago pondweed, Potamogeton pectinatus (L.), was quantified during 1984 through 1986 at Coyote Hills Marsh (Alameda County, California, USA). Annual marsh surveys indicated that P. pectinatus abundance declined (from 70% to 0% of the marsh surface), whereas P. clarkii abundance increased (from 1.6 to almost 3.0 crayfish trap−1 week−1). Crayfish in a 1425 m2 trapping grid were non-aggregated when pondweed was abundant but became aggregated in the remaining pondweed beds as pondweed abundance decreased. In situ exclusion and enclosure experiments using crayfish densities of 0 to 3 individuals m−2 were used to determine if crayfish reduced pondweed. Exclusion of crayfish from areas without pondweed, beginning in midsummer 1984, resulted in plant regrowth; addition of crayfish to these enclosed plots reduced pondweed. Exclusion of crayfish for the entire growing season in 1985 resulted in pondweed persistence in exclusion plots until August: in contrast, pondweed within adjacent, open control plots was eliminated by mid-June. Enclosure experiments showed a strong positive relationship between crayfish density and pondweed clearance. This study demonstrates that grazing crayfish can reduce and, in some cases, eliminate macrophytes from freshwater marshes.  相似文献
