Under controlled conditions, the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata(Wiedemann) preferred to initiate oviposition into preexisting, naturally formed oviposition punctures in a host fruit, kumquat (Fortunella japonica),over establishing new sites on the fruit. This preference was expressed despite the presence of naturally deposited host-marking pheromone (HMP)shown previously to deter oviposition. An almost-identical preference for existing punctures was expressed when females were presented with fruit bearing artificially made punctures on which HMP had been naturally deposited. Using artificial punctures and HMP extracts, the occurrence of punctures was manipulated independently of the presence of HMP.Under field-cage conditions, we found that (1) punctures stimulated egg-laying on kumquats, regardless of HMP treatment; (2) HMP extract inhibited egg-laying, regardless of the occurrence of punctures; and (3) the extent to which HMP inhibited egg-laying was greater on fruit free of punctures than on fruit bearing them. The physiological, evolutionary, and pest management implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Walnut-infesting flies in the Rhagoletis suavis species group actively re-use hosts for oviposition despite engaging in a genus-typical host-marking behaviour which, in other Rhagoletis groups, deters oviposition. In a study of the walnut fly, R. juglandis (Cresson), alternative hypotheses for the putative marking behaviour were evaluated.
2. The oviposition site attraction hypothesis proposes that the host mark guides females to oviposition sites on occupied fruit. The competition intensity signal hypothesis proposes that the host mark is an indicator of the level of competition to be incurred if fruit are re-used.
3. In a field cage, females were presented simultaneously with fruit previously exposed to 25 females that were also allowed to oviposit and engage in the putative marking behaviour, and control fruit on which females were allowed only to oviposit. The occurrence of host marking reduced a female's propensity to oviposit from 46% to just over 10%, consistent with the competition intensity signal hypothesis only.
4. In a laboratory assay, the duration of host marking was correlated positively with the size of a female's clutch. This result, also consistent with the competition intensity signal hypothesis, suggests that the amount of marking pheromone on a fruit is a reliable indicator of the number of eggs already deposited within.
5. In a second field-cage experiment, females were allowed to mark on fruit for 0, 10, 20, or 30 min and fruit were presented to test females. Whether or not females alighted on a particular host was not affected by the duration of marking; however, the frequency of both ovipositor probing and egg deposition decreased with increasing duration of marking. Consistent with the competition intensity signal hypothesis, this result suggests that the host mark permits females to assess the level of competition that a clutch will incur within re-used fruit.  相似文献

The experiments in this paper were planned to study the mechanisms of release of ovipositional behaviour in bombyx mori. For this purpose, egg-laying and the spontaneous discharges of motor neurons in G IX were compared between mated and virgin females. The spontaneous discharges of motor neurons in G IX were recorded extracellularly from the nerve bundles of the isolated G IX bathed in a mixture of Ringer's solution and body fluid. The mating stimulated egg-laying so definitively that within 24 hr from the removal of males the mated females laid most of the eggs stored in the genital organs. Ageing of the moth accelerated the egg-laying of the virgins: the number of unfertilized eggs laid by virgins within 2 days from emergence was 10 to 20 per cent of the number of fertilized eggs laid by the mated females within 24 hr, but the number of unfertilized eggs laid within 7 days by the virgins reached 60 to 70 per cent. On the other hand, mating activated the spontaneous discharges of motor neurons in G IX. Moth age had a slight effect on the spontaneous discharges of motor neurons in G IX of the virgins. In recording the spontaneous discharges of motor neurons in G IX, the only changed factor was the body fluid outside the ganglion itself. Therefore, it was postulated that mating changed the humoral condition of the female. This change may stimulate the motor neurons in G IX, and then the egg-laying of mared females may be activated.  相似文献

Abstract. The European cherry fruit fly (Rhagoletis cerasi L.; Diptera, Tephritidae) marks cherries (Prunus avium L.) after oviposition with a host marking pheromone (HMP). The marking trail prevents additional oviposition by the same or other females into the same fruit. On the ventral side of the tarsi of both sexes, contact-chemoreceptor sensilla were identified which contain a receptor cell selectively sensitive to HMP. The HMP receptors of males were slightly more sensitive than those of females, suggesting that the more general term ‘host-marking pheromone’ is more appropriate than the previously used ‘oviposition deterring pheromone (ODP)’. The four structural isomers of the HMP, N(15R, S(β-glucopyranosyl)-oxy-8RS-hydroxypalmitoyl)-taurine, and various derivatives were synthesized and tested in an electrophysiological bioassay. Both the 8R,15R and the 8S,15RS isomers of the HMP were equally active with a threshold of about 2 times 10-10M, and were shown to be present in the female faeces in similar proportions. The two 15S HMP isomers were about 13 times less active. Testing synthetic derivatives of the HMP molecule revealed that the presence of the four moieties of the molecule are important for the activity: taurine, palmitic acid, C(8) hydroxyl group, and glucose (C(15)). The chain length of the fatty acid, the hydroxyl group at C(8) and the position of glucose at C(15) also influenced the activity. Only minor loss of activity (factor 2) relative to the natural molecule was observed when the methyl group in the C(15) position was removed. The removal of the β-glycosidically linked glucose (replaced by a hydroxyl group) resulted in about a 4-fold loss of activity. The cation of the HMP molecule seemed to have no effect on its activity, whereas both low and high pH reduced it significantly. Based on these results, field experiments have been initiated to control oviposition by cherry fruit flies on cherries applying the 15-desmethyl-HMP derivative.  相似文献

Abdominal motoneurones of the locust Locusta migratoria were investigated in immature, mature and allatectomised females to compare their response characteristics during reproductive development. These motoneurones were chosen because they control muscles which are involved in extreme lengthening during egg-laying behaviour. The study focused on changes in motoneurone firing activity and its possible regulation by juvenile hormone. In isolated nerve-muscle preparations, increased resting motor activity was found in mature (>14 days) but not in immature females (<5 days). Removing the corpora allata, the gland producing juvenile hormone in insects, prevented increased motor activity. Stimulus evoked activation of the motor system led to a characteristic burst of action potentials which lasted for a few seconds. The time-course and amount of activation changed significantly during reproductive development. Mature females displayed longer lasting and higher activity than immature or allatectomised females, but only those segments involved in egg-laying were found to express the altered firing properties. Single cell analysis of motoneurone dendritic morphology or membrane properties revealed no evidence that could be causative for the activity changes seen during reproductive development. The results suggest that altered motoneurone activity serves to adapt females to the neuromuscular requirements of egg-laying behaviour.  相似文献

Hermit crabs, Pagurus bernhardus, sometimes exchange shells after a period of shell rapping, when the initiating or attacking crab brings its shell rapidly and repeatedly into contact with the shell of the noninitiator or defender in a series of bouts. Bouts are separated by pauses, and raps within bouts are separated by very short periods called 'gaps'. Since within-contest variation is missed when signals are studied by averaging performance rates over entire contests, we analysed the fine within-bout structure of this repeated, aggressive signal. We found that the pattern is consistent with high levels of fatigue in initiators. The duration of the gaps between individual raps increased both within bouts and from bout to bout, and we conclude that this activity is costly to perform. Furthermore, long pauses between bouts is correlated with increased vigour of rapping in the subsequent bout, which suggests that the pause allows for recovery from fatigue induced by rapping. These between-bout pauses may be assessed by noninitiators and provide a signal of stamina. Copyright 2000 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of a detailed analysis of 52 song bouts, recorded from 22 great tits, Parus major, during the dawn chorus. A song bout consists of a number of song bursts (called strophes) separated by periods of silence. High quality males, as measured by average strophe length, sang their bouts with a higher percentage performance time (i.e. the percentage of time spent singing in a bout), but the average number of strophes per bout was not related to male quality. In 31 of 52 bouts there was a systematic decrease in the percentage performance time throughout the bout. This was mainly caused by a prolongation of the pauses between the strophes, and sometimes by a shortening of the strophes. Both high and low quality males sang bouts with and without this decrease in the percentage performance time. Bouts that started with longer strophes and/or shorter inter-strophe pauses showed on average a more rapid decrease in the percentage performance time, and contained fewer strophes, than bouts that started with shorter strophes and/or longer inter-strophe pauses. After switching to another song type the males again used longer strophes and/or shorter inter-strophe pauses. An ‘anti-exhaustion’ hypothesis is proposed and discussed. This hypothesis gives a mainly causal explanation for the existence of song switching and song repertoires in passerine birds.  相似文献

Parental care activities of male and female Common Terns Sterna hirundo were recorded over two breeding seasons. Males and females exhibited distinct parental roles throughout a breeding bout. Courtship feeding by males was extensive prior to and during egg-laying, but declined with the onset of incubation. Females performed significantly more incubation behaviour than males although both sexes spent equal time attending at the nest site. During the chick stage, females spent significantly more time on the territory than did males. Chick feeding was largely the responsibility of the male; males fed chicks at a rate approximately three times higher than that of females. In addition, whereas females showed no trend in the size of fish delivered to chicks relative to chick age, the size of fish delivered by males increased with chick age. Courtship feeding activities and extensive chick feeding contributions by male Common Terns appear to outweigh parental contributions by females, contrary to predictions for a monogamous species.  相似文献

The behaviour of female Necrophorus vespilloides whose clutches had been removed partially or completely was tested in laboratory experiments. If the reproductive activities can proceed without disturbances, the first larvae reach the carcass 56 h after the start of egg-laying. If no larvae come to the carcass, all females resume egg-laying within five days. The second clutch (‘replacement clutch’) is, on average, smaller than the first one. If the eggs from the replacement clutches are also removed, the females produce new clutches until no more carrion is available. One larva coming to the carcass prevents production of replacement clutches with 20 % of the females. 5 and 10 larvae prevent a higher proportion of females from producing new clutches; the reaction of the female depends on the size of the carcass offered and on the number of larvae present on the carcass. There are two behavioural options for the females with respect to time when egg-laying is resumed. Some females produce a replacement clutch while the larvae are still at the carcass; other females wait until the larvae leave the carcass. In the presence of only a few larvae at the carcass most females show both forms of behaviour under experimental conditions.  相似文献

Fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster females display rhythmic egg-laying under 12:12?h light/dark (LD) cycles which persists with near 24?h periodicity under constant darkness (DD). We have shown previously that persistence of this rhythm does not require the neurons expressing pigment dispersing factor (PDF), thought to be the canonical circadian pacemakers, and proposed that it could be controlled by peripheral clocks or regulated/triggered by the act of mating. We assayed egg-laying behaviour of wild-type Canton S (CS) females under LD, DD and constant light (LL) conditions in three different physiological states; as virgins, as females allowed to mate with males for 1?day and as females allowed to mate for the entire duration of the assay. Here, we report the presence of a circadian rhythm in egg-laying in virgin D. melanogaster females. We also found that egg-laying behaviour of 70 and 90% females from all the three male presence/absence protocols follows circadian rhythmicity under DD and LL, with periods ranging between 18 and 30?h. The egg-laying rhythm of all virgin females synchronized to LD cycles with a peak occurring soon after lights-off. The rhythm in virgins was remarkably robust with maximum number of eggs deposited immediately after lights-off in contrast to mated females which show higher egg-laying during the day. These results suggest that the egg-laying rhythm of D. melanogaster is endogenously driven and is neither regulated nor triggered by the act of mating; instead, the presence of males results in reduction in entrainment to LD cycles.  相似文献

The male song of the duetting grasshopper Chorthippus biguttulus consists of syllables alternating with noisy pauses. The syllable-pause structure is important for song recognition by the female. Using playback experiments we investigated the mechanism by which intensity modulations within the song pattern are used to detect syllable onsets and offsets. We varied the relative onset level (level of the syllable beginning relative to the noisy pause) and the relative offset level (level of the noisy pause relative to the syllable end) independently in different experiments. For all females, an increase in intensity defining the syllable onset was necessary to evoke responses. Syllable offset cues were not always necessary: some females responded to continuous noise stimuli wherein only syllable onsets were marked by short pulses of high intensity. Those females that did not require syllable offset cues did not, however, lack a functional pause detection mechanism, since their responses to model songs containing silent pauses were restricted to a given range of pause durations. We propose that syllable-pause detection involves two independent processes: (1) syllable onset detection by a phasic neuronal unit that can be re-activated only after a short pause, and (2) the rejection of unacceptably long pauses by a second unit.  相似文献

The effects of social stimuli on the reproductive physiology of female birds have been widely studied. This study examined the endocrine and behavioural responses of female Canvasbacks ( Aythya valisineria ) to changes in the behavioural and endocrine states of the male, as signalled by his courtship displays. Male Canvasbacks exposed to female conspecifics exhibited a variety of courtship displays which increased significantly with testosterone administration. However, the testosterone-increased courtship displays of males did not increase female receptivity or serum LH, or stimulate reproductive development or egg-laying in unpaired females placed with them. Females confined in cubicles within a pen that held breeding pairs and a free-swimming flock had higher serum LH levels and laid more eggs than did females in cubicles in another pen without breeding pairs or a free-swimming flock. This suggests that social factors, such as vocalizations from a flock and breeding pairs, may increase serum LH and egg-laying in unpaired females. Oestradiol implants in female Canvasbacks did not elevate receptivity to courting drakes, nor did they stimulate pair formation, nesting activity, or egg-laying behaviour. Testosterone implants in drakes and oestradiol implants in females decreased serum LH in each group. These results show that increasing the amount of courtship is not adequate to stimulate pairing behaviour or increases in reproductive hormones. Thus, our results suggest that female receptivity to male courtship may be a key determinant of pair formation and consequent synchronization of the behaviour patterns between members of a pair of wild birds. Our results may further suggest a dissociation between effects of courtship and pair formation in wild Canvasbacks.  相似文献

Background

Egg-laying behavior in the nematode C. elegans displays a distinct clustered temporal pattern: egg-laying events occur primarily in bursts or active phases, separated by inactive phases during which eggs are retained. The onset of the active phase can be modeled as a Poisson process with a time constant of approximately 20 minutes, while egg-laying events within an active phase occur with a faster time constant of approximately 20 seconds. Here we propose a cellular model for how the temporal pattern of egg-laying might be generated, based on genetic and cell-biological experiments and statistical analyses.  相似文献

Scent Marking in Female Prairie Voles: a Test of Alternative Hypotheses   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We conducted three experiments with females in different stages of reproductive condition to test alternative hypotheses for the function of scent marking in female prairie voles, Microtus ochrogaster . The three reproductive categories were isolated females prior to sexual stimulation (anoestrous), sexually stimulated (oestrous) and lactating. Females in different reproductive condition were given the opportunity to scent mark clean unmarked substrate or areas that had previously been marked by adult females or adult males. The numbers of scent marks deposited by females did not differ statistically for females in different reproductive condition. However, there was a trend for anoestrous females to mark the most, oestrous females less, and lactating females the least. The lack of scent marking by lactating females might be to reduce conspicuousness to conspecifics or predators. Oestrous females tended to mark the most in the area marked previously by males, although the difference was not statistically significant.
Our results provide some support for a mate-attraction hypothesis and a territorial-defense hypothesis, but were most consistent with a self-advertisement hypothesis. Over marking was uncommon and did not differ by experiment or sex of previous donor. Our results suggest that the number and placement of scent marks by females are highly variable and function primarily to convey individual identity.  相似文献

Sex effects on behaviour were investigated by repeatedly mating the same male and female Drosophila melanogaster. Male influence is mainly on percentage wing vibration while females largely determine wing vibration duration and bout number. This courtship pattern is stable across matings involving the same individuals.  相似文献

Insect larvae such as those of yucca moths that feed on small, patchily distributed food items often face an elevated risk of intraspecific competition or cannibalism. For this reason, ovipositing females may assess a potential oviposition site for prior conspecific eggs or larvae before deciding whether to oviposit. Selective abortion of yucca flowers with high egg numbers prevents competition among larvae of the yucca moth Tegeticula yuccasella, but the same mechanism should select for female detection of and fewer ovipositions in flowers that already contain eggs. Female yucca moths presented with either virgin or previously visited flowers laid significantly fewer eggs in the latter flowers and pollinated them less often. A significant negative association was found between number of previous oviposition attempts in a flower and number of additional attempts by a female, suggesting a quantitative assessment of prior egg load, but the correlation coefficient was low. Factors contributing to this low correlation may include variation in signal quality, poor detection capability, uncertainty contributed by a variable oviposition attempt to egg ratio, and a variable response criterion based on recent female experience and physiological status. Females rationed their pollen by pollinating at decreasing frequency during a bout within a flower, and by depositing smaller pollen loads during later pollinations within a flower. Females ovipositing into a previously visited flower pollinated as frequently as would a first female for a given oviposition attempt within a flower, i.e., the probability of pollination after the nth oviposition was independent of whether it was performed by a first or a later moth. Experimental presentation of virgin flowers marked with a homogenate from female abdomens induced the same oviposition and pollination behavior as seen on previously visited flowers, suggesting the presence of a host-marking pheromone. Given that all eggs within a selectively aborted flower die, there may be selection among some yucca moths for providing a strong signal of floral egg status to conspecific females. Abstract.  If host seeds are absent, females of the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus sometimes 'dump' eggs on unsuitable substrates, which causes complete larval mortality and decreases female lifespan. To understand the possible function of this behaviour, the present study examines genetic variation in dumping behaviour between and within populations. When deprived of hosts, females from an African population are much more prone to dump eggs than Asian females, most of which dump no eggs over their lifetimes. Egg dumping therefore cannot be explained as a simple, species-wide constraint imposed by the accumulation of mature oocytes. A transfer experiment tested the hypothesis that dumping eggs improves a female's ability to exploit the subsequent availability of seeds, perhaps by preventing a disruption of oocyte maturation. Contrary to prediction, the number of eggs laid after females are transferred to seeds is inversely related to the number dumped during deprivation. Two bidirectional selection experiments revealed heritable variation in egg-dumping behaviour within the African population. Deprived females from the dumper line dump more than twice as many eggs as do females from the nondumper line. Pre-adult development time is significantly longer in the nondumper line, which suggests that trade-offs with other fitness components could maintain variation in egg-laying behaviour within populations. The divergent responses to host availability by African and Asian females may represent a pleiotropic effect of similarly divergent responses to host quality.  相似文献

Causes of egg-size variation between and within clutches were studied in clutches of the blue tit ( Parus caeruleus L.). We measured the mass of each egg in the laying sequence in unmanipulated clutches, in clutches of parents experimentally supplied with extra food before egg-laying, and in clutches of parents supplemented with extra food after the start of egg-laying. Hatchlings were weighed at an age of two days and their mass was found to be positively related to egg mass. No general trend of decreasing or increasing egg mass was found within the laying sequence. Females provided with extra food before egg-laying laid clutches with significantly less variation in egg mass than did control females. The reason for this was that the first-laid egg of unmanipulated females was lighter than the rest of the eggs in the clutch. This pattern disappeared in clutches of females receiving extra food. Thus, the reduction in egg mass variation among clutches of foodsupplemented females depended on an ability of these females, in contrast to control females, to lay a first egg of the same mass as the rest of the clutch. Eggs laid after the initiation of incubation were significantly heavier than equivalent eggs in those clutches where incubation started after clutch completion. The difference was small, however, and the adaptive significance of the finding is questionable. We argue that intra-clutch variation in egg mass is connected with greater fitness consequences than in inter-clutch variation. Furthermore, our results indicate that energetical constraints on the laying female are more important as a cause of the observed intra-clutch variation in egg mass than are adaptive responses to the environment.  相似文献

Abstract. The plasticity of the stinging behaviour of female Eupelmidae ( Eupelmus vuilleti Crawford, E. orientalis Crawford Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae) was analysed through the interrelationships of a parasitic community living on larval stage of Callosobruchus maculatus Fabricius (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). In traditional African grainstores, Eupelmus females have at their disposal all the larval stages of their host. Their exploitation is revealed by the sting observed on the host caused by the ovipositor of parasitoid females. This stinging behaviour begins immediately on the adult female's emergence, and thereafter there is a daily increase in the number of hosts stung. Stinging activity is linked to the age of the available hosts, but not all of the hosts available are exploited by the two species studied. This absence of total exploitation could indicate a threshold of activity in the stinging acts which could be in part linked to the secretion activity of the poison glands of parasitoid female.
In females of E. vuilleti and E.orientalis the stinging act is usually associated with egg-laying. The relationship between stinging and egg-laying is stronger in more advanced larval stages of the host.
In the presence of parasitized hosts, females of E. orientalis and E.vuilleti can exhibit hyperparasitism. The majority of larvae (i.e. primary parasitoid) that have been hyperparasitized have been stung and a large number of them are completely inactive. However, E. vuilleti females deposited their eggs in the available space of the pupation chamber of the host. The neonatal larvae from these scattered eggs could exploit any available host without the female having 'prepared the ground' at the time of egg-laying.
In Eupelmidae, all this happens as if there were a complementary action between the females and the neonate which could, if necessary, reinforce and/or compensate for the deficiencies in the host exploitation by the female.  相似文献
