The effect of apple cultivar on the distribution of the predatory mite Typhlodromus pyri was studied in an experimental orchard where spider mites occurred at negligible densities. Seven apple scab-resistant cultivars, showing some differences in their leaf morphology, were considered. In particular, their leaf blade was classified according to four levels of pubescence. The distribution of T. pyri along the shoots was also studied. In the first experimental year the colonization of different cultivars by T. pyri showed definite patterns, sometimes influenced by the occurrence of eriophyids. One year later, T. pyri abundance again showed some differences among cultivars in conditions of prey scarcity. In both years large phytoseiid populations were recorded on the cultivar N.Y. 18491, despite the low eriophyid occurrence, probably because of its highly pubescent leaf undersurfaces. In contrast, Prima and TSR 29T219, characterized by slightly pubescent leaf undersurfaces, supported low phytoseiid densities independently of prey availability.  相似文献

The herbivore‐induced plant volatile (HIPV) methyl salicylate (MeSA) is widely present in the chemical profile of several plant species and is known to attract natural enemies, including predatory mites. In this study, the response of Typhlodromus pyri, a key predator of pest mites in west coast vineyards, to synthetically produced MeSA was tested using a Y‐tube olfactometer in laboratory bioassays. Six doses ranging from 0.002 to 200 μg of MeSA diluted in 0.1 ml hexane were tested. Significantly higher proportions of T. pyri preferred MeSA at doses 0.02, 0.2 and 20 μg. No differences in response to MeSA were detected at the highest (200 μg), intermediate (2 μg) and lowest (0.002 μg) doses. Mite response to MeSA was a function of dose when fitting polynomial and logistic regression models using dose and square of the log dose prediction factors. Results indicate that synthetic MeSA may be applied to attract predatory arthropod populations in vineyards to enhance biological control of pest mites.  相似文献

By analyzing the volatiles from Tetranychus urticae-infested kidney bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) at different times for two days, we found that they were mainly produced in the light. Tetranychus urticae showed a higher oviposition rate and spent more time feeding during the day (in the light) than at night (in the dark). Infested leaves placed in the light attracted the predatory mite Amblyseius womersleyi, whereas those that were placed in the dark for at least 2h in daytime did not. This indicates that presence or absence of light affects the production of herbivore-induced plant volatiles. Amblyseius womersleyi dispersed more frequently and consumed more T. urticae eggs during the day (in the light) than at night (in the dark), whereas their oviposition rate did not differ between day and night. Presence or absence of herbivore-induced plant volatiles in the surroundings did not affect dispersal, predation or oviposition rates of A. womersleyi. These results show that A. womersleyis behavior coincides with the production pattern of herbivore-induced plant volatiles.  相似文献

Although all known phytoseiid mites (Acari: Phytoseiidae) are predators of mites or small insects, many readily feed and reproduce on pollen as well. This ability to feed on food from plant origin increases their survival during periods when prey is locally sparse, but might occur at the expense of the ability to utilize food as efficiently as specialized predators. In this study we compare two predatory mite species used as biological control agents against thrips, Neoseiulus cucumeris and Iphiseius degenerans, with respect to (1) the range of pollen species that may serve as food sources for a sustained oviposition; and (2) the life history and expected intrinsic growth rates on some suitable pollen diets. The results show that I. degenerans is, compared to N. cucumeris, able to utilize a larger proportion of approx. 25 pollen species tested, but does not show equally high ovipositional rates as N. cucumeris. Consequently, the highest intrinsic growth rate for I. degenerans (0.21 day –1) will be surpassed by N. cucumeris.  相似文献

In Africa, Typhlodromalus manihoti and T. aripo, two introduced predators of the cassava green mite Mononychellus tanajoa, occupy different parts of cassava foliage. In the present study, niche use by these two predators, as mediated by prey-induced infochemicals, was investigated. In response to prey feeding damage, cassava plant parts emit volatile blends, that attract phytoseiidae predators. When given a choice between old cassava leaves infested with M. tanajoa and either apices or young cassava leaves infested with M. tanajoa, T. aripo displayed a marked preference for odors emitted from either infested apices or infested young leaves over infested old leaves but showed no preference for odors from apices versus young leaves, all infested with M. tanajoa. Typhlodromalus manihoti did not discriminate between volatiles from the three infested cassava plant parts. Our data show that T. aripo uses differences in volatile blends released by infested cassava plant parts and restricts its fundamental niche to a realized niche, which enables coexistence with its competitor T. manihoti.  相似文献

The predatory mite Neoseiulus womersleyi shows a significant correlation between its olfactory response and dispersal tendency in different geographical populations. This study investigated the genetic background of the relationship using isofemale lines. Y-tube olfactometer tests confirmed that there was a genetic component in predator response to herbivore-induced plant volatiles. Wind tunnel tests in the absence of the herbivore-induced plant volatiles revealed that the dispersal tendencies of N. womersleyi exhibited genetic variation among isofemale lines, and other experiments revealed the existence of significant differences in prey consumption rate, fecundity, and developmental time. However, there was no genetic correlation between behavioral traits (olfactory response, innate dispersal) and the other traits, suggesting that the positive correlation between the behavioral traits was not caused by genetic factors.  相似文献

Effects on development, longevity, fecundity and predation of the predatory phytoseiid mite Typhlodromus mangiferus Zaher and El-Brolossy were studied in the laboratory at different temperatures and relative humidities using four prey mite species: the motile stages of the eriophyid mango bud mite Aceria mangiferae Sayed, the eriophyid leaf coating and webbing mite Cisaberoptus kenyae Keifer, the eriophyid mango rust mite Metaculus mangiferae (Attiah) and nymphs of the tetranychid mango red mite Oligonychus mangiferus (Rahman and Sabra). The increase of different temperatures and decrease of relative humidities from 25°C and 60% to 30°C and 55% and 35°C and 50% shortened development and increased reproduction and prey consumption. The developmental durations were almost similar when the predator was fed on eriophyids compared to that on tetranychid. The maximum reproduction (2.70, 2.08, 1.97 and 1.66 eggs/ ♀ /day) was recorded at the highest temperature and the lowest relative humidity, while the minimum reproduction (1.7, 1.54, 1.53, and 1.06 eggs/ ♀ /day) was noted at the lowest temperature and highest relative humidity with all mango prey species. Life table parameters indicated that feeding of T. mangiferus on A. mangiferae led to the highest reproduction rate (rm = 0.204 and 0.139 females/female/day), while feeding on O. mangiferus gave the lowest reproduction rate (rm = 0.137 and 0.116) at 35°C and 50% relative humidity and 25°C and 60% relative humidity, respectively. T. mangiferus seems to be a voracious predator of both mango eriophyid and tetranychid mites. The adult female daily consumed about 127 A. mangiferae, 97 C. kenyae, 86 M. mangiferae, and 18 O. mangiferus at 35°C and 50% relative humidity, while it devoured only 99.81, 86, 81, and 15 individuals, respectively at 25°C and 60% relative humidity. The present study revealed that each injurious mite is thought to be profitable prey species to T. mangiferus as a facultative predator.  相似文献

在16、20、24、28和32℃5种恒温条件下以竹裂爪螨为食料对竹讯走螨(Typhlodromus bambusae E-hara)进行饲养,观察其生长发育各螨期的存活及成螨繁殖情况,进而组建竹盲走螨在5种恒温条件下实验种群的特定年龄生命表,并用Morris模型和Weibull频数分布函数探讨了温度对竹盲走螨实验种群数量变动的影响。结果表明,每雌平均产卵量在24℃时最大,为32.26粒,低于或高于24℃平均每雌产卵量均呈下降趋势。种群趋势指数(I)温度(T)之间呈二次函数关系(I=-98.7747 9.6914T-0.2033T^2),理论上当温度为23.83℃时,种群趋势指数最大,繁殖一代后种群数量为上一代数量的16.74倍。通过Morris模型分析,表明每雌产卵量是影响该实验种群趋势指数的最重要因子。在试验温度范围内,竹盲走螨实验种群存活曲线均属Deevey Ⅰ型。  相似文献

Abstract 1 The response of Neoseiulus fallacis Garmen and Galendromus occidentalis (Acari: Phytoseiidae) to Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae)‐damaged and undamaged hop, Humulus lupulus (L.), plants was tested using a Y‐tube olfactometer. 2 Neoseiulus fallacis but not G. occidentalis was attracted to volatiles from T. urticae‐damaged hop plants when paired with undamaged plants. 3 The response of N. fallacis to these volatiles was stronger for plants severed at the soil surface than for intact plants. 4 There was no difference in the response of N. fallacis to severed or intact hop plants that had no spider mite damage, indicating that artificial wounding by severing alone does not elicit the production of attractive volatiles detectable to N. fallacis. These results are consistent with the existence of cross‐talk between signalling pathways initiated by feeding damage and artificial wounding that result in elevated levels of predator‐attracting volatiles.  相似文献

A field population of Typhlodromus pyri (Acari: Phytoseiidae) tolerant to mancozeb was selected in the laboratory. After 10 mancozeb selections the LC50 value for mancozeb was 73 times higher in the selected-10 strain compared to the standard susceptible strain. A genetic analysis using reciprocal crosses and backcrosses of female F1 progeny found no maternal effect. Resistance in the selected-10 strain was codominant in expression, dominance value was about −0.1. Backcrosses between F1 females and the susceptible strain indicate that the resistance to mancozeb could be principally conferred by a predominant gene, but additional factors would also be involved.  相似文献

To investigate the relationship between foraging behavior and life-history traits of the predatory mite Neoseiulus womersleyi, the olfactory responses, dispersal ratios from a prey patch, predation rates, fecundity, and developmental times in eight local populations of N. womersleyi were investigated. Significant differences among local populations were found in all these traits except fecundity. None of the life-history traits correlated with foraging behavior. A significant positive correlation was found only between the olfactory response and the dispersal ratio. These results suggested that predatory mites with low olfactory responses would stay in a prey patch longer than predatory mites with high olfactory responses.  相似文献

The ability of Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten to feed on powdery mildew was investigated. Adult females of T. pyri which had previously been fed on the pollen of Pinus sylvestris L. were offered three powdery mildew species and their feeding behaviour was observed. The females fed readily on the conidia of Erysiphe orontii Cast. from tobacco and Oidium fragariae Harz. from strawberry while no feeding was observed on Erysiphe polygoni DC. from red clover, even after the mites were starved for 2 days. Erysiphe orontii was tested for its effect on the survival, oviposition and development of T. pyri. The results showed that the conidia of E. orontii can supply mites with the water and nutrients necessary for their normal development. Mature females successfully mated and reproduced, although their oviposition rate was low. This revised version was published online in November 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis is an important biological control agent of herbivorous spider mites. This species is also intensively used in the study of tritrophic effects of plant volatiles in interactions involving plants, herbivores, and their natural enemies. Recently, a novel pathogenic bacterium, Acaricomes phytoseiuli, has been isolated from adult P. persimilis females. This pathogen causes a characteristic disease syndrome with dramatic changes in longevity, fecundity, and behavior. Healthy P. persimilis use spider mite-induced volatiles to locate prey patches. Infection with A. phytoseiuli strongly reduces the attraction to herbivore-induced plant volatiles. The loss of response to herbivore-induced plant volatiles along with the other disease symptoms can have a serious impact on the success of biological control of spider mites. In this study, we have developed a molecular tool (PCR) to detect the pathogenic bacterium in individual predatory mites. PCR primers specific for A. phytoseiuli were developed based on 16S ribosomal DNA of the bacterium. The PCR test was validated with DNA extracted from predatory mites that had been exposed to A. phytoseiuli. A survey on different P. persimilis populations as well as other predatory mite species from several companies that rear predatory mites for biological control revealed that the disease is widespread in Europe and is restricted to P. persimilis. The possibility that the predatory mites get infected via their prey Tetranychus urticae could be eliminated since the PCR test run on prey gave a negative result.  相似文献

We compared the emigration rates of Amblyseius womersleyi from prey patches (leaf disks) of different conditions in airflow containing either infested plant volatiles (volatiles airflow) or uninfested plant volatiles (control airflow). Both airflow and prey patch conditions significantly affected the emigration rates. Emigration rates from patches carrying prey products (feces, exuviae, webs, etc.) and prey eggs were significantly lower in control airflow than in volatiles airflow. Under other patch conditions, the rates were lower in control airflow than in volatiles airflow, although the difference was not significant. In both airflows, the lowest emigration rates were observed when predators were in a heavily infested patch. Patches carrying prey products and prey eggs resulted in lower emigration rates than patches carrying eggs alone and patches emitting prey-infested plant volatiles but carrying no prey. Thus, A. womersleyi appears to decide the timing of emigration based on two criteria: prey products in the patch and prey-infested plant volatiles from outside.  相似文献

The response of the predatory mite Amblyseius longispinosus (Acari: Phytoseiidae) to the webnest of the spider mite nanjingensis (Acari: Tetranychidae) was examined using two-choice tests in the laboratory. A. longispinosus females were found significantly more often on leaves with webnests than on leaves without webnests and were often observed searching under the webbing. Because spider mites and their eggs were removed from the webnests before experiments, predators responded to stimuli associated with webbing, mite feeding damage and other residues in the webnests.  相似文献

Susceptibility of the predatory mite, Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) (Acari: Phytoseiidae), to the field rates of seven commercial insecticides was evaluated in laboratory bioassays. In direct treatments with lufenuron, novaluron, pyrifluquinazon, and sulfoxaflor, 82–88% of N. californicus adult females survived 168 h after exposure. Females exposed to these four insecticides produced 14–19% fewer eggs compared to females in the control group. Eclosion of eggs deposited by treated females was not affected. The percentage of eggs that hatched and larval survival following direct exposure to these four insecticides were not seriously reduced. A total of 72–82% of immature N. californicus survived on leaf discs with residues of lufenuron, novaluron, pyrifluquinazon, and sulfoxaflor matured to adults. Emamectin benzoate, lepimectin and spirotetramat were highly toxic to both N. californicus adult females and larvae. Based on these results, lufenuron, novaluron, pyrifluquinazon and sulfoxaflor are promising candidates for use in integrated pest management programs where N. californicus is a major natural enemy.  相似文献

The effect of residues of esfenvalerate on oviposition of the resistant strain of the predatory mite Typhlodromus pyri and its main prey, European red mite Panonychus ulmi and two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae, were investigated. T. pyri showed a significant linear reduction in oviposition after 24h in the presence of increasing levels of esfenvalerate residue applied at the field rate. Furthermore, when given a choice, T. pyri preferred to lay eggs on residue-free surfaces. Of the two prey species, only P. ulmi showed significant avoidance of increasing levels of residues of the field rate concentration of esfenvalerate, as measured by runoff mortality, however both P. ulmi and T. urticae, when given a choice, showed a preference for esfenvalerate-free surfaces. As with the predatory mite T. pyri, both prey species showed a significant linear reduction of oviposition with increasing esfenvalerate residues and a preference to lay eggs on esfenvalerate-free surfaces. Esfenvalerate residues as high as 15X field rate were not repellent to pyrethroid-resistant T. pyri. The possible effects of these sublethal effects on predator-prey dynamics and implications for integrated mite control programmes in apple orchards are discussed.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal characteristics of host plants can influence the population biology of the herbivores feeding on them. In this study, I examined the effect of variation in host plant characteristics on the development of acaricide resistance in the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae, a widely distributed agricultural pest. This investigation examined the geographic variation in the degree of resistance to two new types of acaricide, pyridaben and fenpyroximate. From mortality tests at field-level concentrations of the acaricides, many populations collected from fruit trees and roses had a high frequency of resistant individuals for acaricides while almost all populations collected from herbaceous crops had low frequencies of resistant individuals. These results, combined with those from a previous allozyme study, indicate that patch size and persistence of host plants regulate the population structure of the mites including gene flow between populations and, by extension, the development of acaricide resistance.  相似文献

To determine how adult Typhlodromus occidentalis, a mite used in the biological control of spider mites, thrive in arid western North America, the water balance characteristics of adult females were compared to those of a laboratory colony of Amblyseius finlandicus originating from Finnish apple orchards. The mites contained comparable amounts of water (73.6 and 74.9%, respectively, for T. occidentalis and A. finlandicus), absorbed water from the air between 86% and 92% relative humidity (RH) (critical equilibrium humidity) and drank free water from droplets. Typhlodromus occidentalis were distinguished, however, by having lower net water loss rates (0.8% versus 1.3% h–1 at 0% RH, 20°C for A. finlandicus), a feature that enables them to retain water more effectively. Above the critical equilibrium humidity water was lost by adult female T. occidentalis whose mouth parts had been blocked with wax, implying an oral uptake mechanism for the absorption of water vapour. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998  相似文献
