Rice is known to be sensitive to soil water deficit and evaporative demand, with a greatest sensitivity of lowland‐adapted genotypes. We have analysed the responses of plant water relations and of leaf elongation rate (LER) to soil water status and evaporative demand in seven rice genotypes belonging to different species, subspecies, either upland‐ or lowland‐adapted. In the considered range of soil water potential (0 to ?0.6 MPa), stomatal conductance was controlled in such a way that the daytime leaf water potential was similar in well‐watered, droughted or flooded conditions (isohydric behaviour). A low sensitivity of LER to evaporative demand was observed in the same three conditions, with small differences between genotypes and lower sensitivity than in maize. The sensitivity of LER to soil water deficit was similar to that of maize. A tendency towards lower sensitivities was observed in upland than lowland genotypes but with smaller differences than expected. We conclude that leaf water status and leaf elongation of rice are not particularly sensitive to water deficit. The main origin of drought sensitivity in rice may be its poor root system, whose effect was alleviated in the study presented here by growing plants in pots whose soil was entirely colonized by roots of all genotypes.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to examine the relationship between proline accumulation and membrane injury in barley leaves suffering from the effects of water deficit. Water deficit stress was induced by water withholding or by immersing the roots in polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) solution of osmotic potential −1.5 MPa. The effect of water stress on proline accumulation and on membrane injury was evaluated in leaf blades of several barley genotypes. Substantial differences in proline accumulation and membrane injury indices among most of the genotypes investigated were observed. It was found that in drought stressed plants a higher ability to accumulate proline positively correlates with lower membrane injury. Whereas, in osmotically stressed plants the highest proline accumulation in the leaves was noticed in genotype with the largest membrane injury. The possible role of proline in membrane protection under conditions of slow-acting drought or shock-acting osmotic stress is discussed.  相似文献

It has been proposed that spacing between cellulose microfibrils within plant cell walls may be an important determinant of their mechanical properties. A consequence of this hypothesis is that the water content of cell walls may alter their extensibility and that low water potentials may directly reduce growth rates by reducing cell wall spacing. This paper describes a number of experiments in which the water potential of frozen and thawed growing hypocotyls of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) were altered using solutions of high molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG) or Dextran while their extension under constant stress was monitored using a creep extensiometer (frozen and thawed tissue was used to avoid confounding effects of turgor or active responses to the treatments). Clear reductions in extensibility were observed using both PEG and Dextran, with effects observed in hypocotyl segments treated with PEG 35 000 solutions with osmotic pressures of > or =0.21 MPa suggesting that the relatively mild stresses required to reduce water potentials of plants in vivo by 0.21 MPa may be sufficient to reduce growth rates via a direct effect on wall extensibility. It is noted, therefore, that the water binding capacity of plant cell walls may be of ecophysiological importance. Measurements of cell walls of sunflower hypocotyls using scanning electron microscopy confirmed that treatment of hypocotyls with PEG solutions reduced wall thickness, supporting the hypothesis that the spatial constraint of movement of cellulose microfibrils affects the mechanical properties of the cell wall.  相似文献

Primary roots of intact maize plants (Zea mays L.) grown for several days in nutrient solutions containing 100 mol m−3 NaCl and additional calcium, had relatively inhibited rates of elongation. Possible physical restraints underlying this salt induced inhibition were investigated. The inhibition did not involve reductions in osmotic potential gradients and turgor in the tip tissues responsible for root elongation growth. The apparent yield threshold pressure, which is related to capacity of cell walls to undergo loosening by stress relaxation, was estimated psychrometrically in excised root tips. Salinity increased yield threshold values. Comparative root extensibility values were obtained for intact plants by determining the initial (1 min) increase in root elongation rate induced by an 0.1 MPa osmotic jump. Comparative extensibility was significantly reduced in the salinized root tips. Salinity did not reduce capacities for water efflux and associated elastic contraction in root tip tissues of intact plants exposed to hypertonic mannitol. We conclude that cell wall hardening in the elongating root tips is an important component of root growth inhibition induced by long-term salinization.  相似文献

The inhibitory effects of PEG on whole-plant growth can exceed the effects of other osmolytes such as NaCI, and this has been ascribed to toxic contaminants, or to reduced oxygen availability in PEG solutions. We investigated another possibility, namely that PEG has an additional inhibitory effect on root water transport which in turn affects leaf development. The effects on first-leaf growth of applications of PEG 6000 or isoosmotic NaCI to the roots were determined using hydroponically grown maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings. Leaf growth rates were inhibited within minutes of PEG application to the roots and remained inhibited for days. The inhibitory effects on growth of NaCI, and also of KCl and mannitol, were much smaller. The comparative effects of NaCI and PEG on root water transport were determined by assaying pressurized flow through excised roots. PEG induced a 7-fold greater inhibition of flow through live roots than NaCI. Killing of the roots by heat treatment, to reduce cell membrane resistances to solute penetration, nearly doubled the flow rate for roots in NaCI, but not for roots in PEG. We suggest that the greater viscosity of PEG solutions, as compared with NaCI, may be a primary factor contributing to the additional inhibition of water flow through live and killed roots. PEG did not have additional effects on leaf turgor but had a 3 times greater inhibitory effect than NaCI on the irreversible extensibility of the leaves and induced 16 times more leaf accumulation of the growth inhibitory stress hormone abscisic acid (ABA). We conclude that greater inhibition of root water transport by PEG 6000, as compared with NaCI, leads to additional reductions in extensibility, additional ABA accumulation, and a greater inhibition of leaf growth.  相似文献

In the present study, two genotypes each of maize and rice were compared for their response to varying degrees of temperature stress (35/30, 40/35, 45/40°C) with controls growing at 30/25°C. At elevated temperatures of 40/35 and 45/40°C, the rice genotypes were inhibited to a significantly higher extent, especially for their shoot growth compared to maize genotypes. The stress injury measured as damage to membranes, loss of chlorophyll and reduction in leaf water status was significantly higher in rice plants, especially at 45/40°C. The components of oxidative stress particularly the level of malondialdehyde was significantly greater in rice plants while the differences for hydrogen peroxide concentrations were small at 40/35 and 45/40°C. The expression of enzymatic antioxidants like catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase was found to be higher in maize plants compared to rice plants while no variations existed for superoxide dismutase at 45/40°C. In addition, the non-enzymatic antioxidants like ascorbic acid, glutathione and proline were maintained at significantly greater levels at 45/40°C in maize than in rice genotypes. These findings suggested that maize genotypes were able to retain their growth under high-temperature conditions partly due to their superior ability to cope up with oxidative damage by heat stress compared to rice genotypes. Since, maize and rice belong to C4 and C3 plant groups, respectively, these observations may also reflect the relative sensitivity of these plant groups to heat stress.  相似文献

Potted maize seedlings were subjected to a single period of water stress. As the severity of water stress increased, measurements were made of leaf and root solute and water potentials, leaf diffusive conductance and leaf and root growth. After day four of the drying cycle, the rate of leaf extension and the development of leaf area were reduced. This reduction correlated well with a reduction in leaf turgor which occurred at this time. A significant accumulation of solutes in the root tips of the unwatered plants resulted in the maintenance of root turgor for the duration of the water stress treatment. Root growth of the unwatered plants was also maintained as the severity of water stress increased. A mild degree of water stress resulted in a net increase in root growth compared to the situation in well-watered plants. The significance of solute regulation and continued root growth for plants growing in drying soil is discussed.Abbreviations PAR photosynthetically active radiation - MPa mega pascat  相似文献

The effect of water deficits on the water relations and stomatal responses of Helianthus annuus and Helianthus petiolaris were compared in plants growing in the glasshouse under controlled conditions. Unirrigated plants of both genotypes were subjected to two different stress rates in which predawn leaf water potentials declined steadily at either 0.15 MPa day?1 or 0.50 MPa day?1. In both genotypes water stress induced a gradual and similar decrease in leaf conductance from 1.6 to 0.3 cm s?1 as water potential decreased from-0.5 to-2.0 MPa. The relationship between leaf conductance and leaf water potential was not affected by the rate of stress development. Development of predawn leaf water potentials of-1.3 MPa had no significant effect on the relative water content at zero turgor, the apoplastic water content or the volumetric elastic modulus of whole leaves in either species, but decreased the osmotic potential at full turgor and zero turgor by 0.22 MPa and decreased the turgid weight: dry weight ratio from 10.6 to 8.4 in H. annuus, but not in H. petiolaris. In H. annuus leaves expanded during stress development, changes in the osmotic potential at full turgor induced by water deficits did not disappear on rewatering.  相似文献

Detached barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) shoots, maintained at different air temperatures and VPDs, were fed ABA via the sub-crown internode in a leaf elongation assay. Analysis of variance of leaf elongation rate (LER) showed significant effects of temperature (T), fed [ABA] and the interaction T × [ABA]. However, the interaction became non-significant when LER was modelled against the [ABA] of the elongation zone, [EZ-ABA] When detached barley shoots were fed sap from droughted maize (Zea mays L.) plants, sap [ABA] could not explain the growth inhibitory activity. Measurement of [EZ-ABA] accounted for this ‘unexplained’ growth inhibition. The detached shoot experiments indicated that [EZ-ABA], and not xylem sap [ABA], was an appropriate explanatory variable to measure in droughted plants. However, ABA accumulation in the elongation zone could not explain a 35% growth reduction in intact droughted plants; thus we considered an interaction of water status and ABA. Using a coleoptile growth assay, we applied mild osmotic stresses (ψ=0 to ?0.06 MPa) and 10?4 mol m?3 ABA. Individually, these treatments did not inhibit growth. However, osmotic stress and ABA applied together significantly reduced growth. This interaction may be an important mechanism in explaining leaf growth inhibition of droughted plants.  相似文献

Uptake of soil water by plants may result in significant gradients between bulk soil and soil in the vicinity of roots. Few experimental studies of water potential gradients in close proximity to roots, and no studies on the relationship of water potential gradients to the root and leaf water potentials, have been conducted. The occurrence and importance of pre-dawn gradients in the soil and their relation to the pre-dawn root and leaf water potentials were investigated with seedlings of four species. Pre-germinated seeds were grown without watering for 7 and lid in a silt loam soil with initial soil matric potentials of -0.02, -0.1 and -0.22 MPa. Significant gradients, independent of the species, were observed only at pre-dawn soil matric potentials lower than -0.25 MPa; the initial soil matric potentials were -0.1 MPa. At an initial bulk soil matric potential of -0.22 MPa, a steep gradient between bulk and rhizoplane soil was observed after 7 d for maize (Zea mays L. cv. Issa) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. cv. Nanus), in contrast to barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Athos) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Kolibri). Pre-dawn root water potentials were usually about the same as the bulk soil matric potential and were higher than the rhizoplane soil matric potential. Pre-dawn root and leaf water potentials tended to be much higher than rhizoplane soil matric potentials when the latter were lower than -0.5 MPa. It is concluded that plants tend to become equilibrated overnight with the wetter bulk soil or with wetter zones in the bulk soil. Plants can thus circumvent negative effects of localized steep pre-dawn soil matric potential gradients. This may be of considerable importance for water uptake and growth in drying soil.  相似文献

The effect of magnetic field (MF) treatments of maize (Zea mays L.) var. Ganga Safed 2 seeds on the growth, leaf water status, photosynthesis and antioxidant enzyme system under soil water stress was investigated under greenhouse conditions. The seeds were exposed to static MFs of 100 and 200 mT for 2 and 1 h, respectively. The treated seeds were sown in sand beds for seven days and transplanted in pots that were maintained at -0.03, -0.2 and -0.4 MPa soil water potentials under greenhouse conditions. MF exposure of seeds significantly enhanced all growth parameters, compared to the control seedlings. The significant increase in root parameters in seedlings from magnetically-exposed seeds resulted in maintenance of better leaf water status in terms of increase in leaf water potential, turgor potential and relative water content. Photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and chlorophyll content increased in plants from treated seeds, compared to control under irrigated and mild stress condition. Leaves from plants of magnetically-treated seeds showed decreased levels of hydrogen peroxide and antioxidant defense system enzymes (peroxidases, catalase and superoxide dismutase) under moisture stress conditions, when compared with untreated controls. Mild stress of -0.2 MPa induced a stimulating effect on functional root parameters, especially in 200 mT treated seedlings which can be exploited profitably for rain fed conditions. Our results suggested that MF treatment (100 mT for 2 h and 200 for 1 h) of maize seeds enhanced the seedling growth, leaf water status, photosynthesis rate and lowered the antioxidant defense system of seedlings under soil water stress. Thus, pre sowing static magnetic field treatment of seeds can be effectively used for improving growth under water stress.  相似文献

Water homeostasis is crucial to the growth and survival of plants under water-related stress. Plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIPs) have been shown to be primary channels mediating water uptake in plant cells. Here we report the water transport activity and mechanisms for the regulation of barley (Hordeum vulgare) PIP aquaporins. HvPIP2 but not HvPIP1 channels were found to show robust water transport activity when expressed alone in Xenopus laevis oocytes. However, the co-expression of HvPIP1 with HvPIP2 in oocytes resulted in significant increases in activity compared with the expression of HvPIP2 alone, suggesting the participation of HvPIP1 in water transport together with HvPIP2 presumably through heteromerization. Severe salinity stress (200 mM NaCl) significantly reduced root hydraulic conductivity (Lp(r)) and the accumulation of six of 10 HvPIP mRNAs. However, under relatively mild stress (100 mM NaCl), only a moderate reduction in Lp(r) with no significant difference in HvPIP mRNA levels was observed. Sorbitol-mediated osmotic stress equivalent to 100 and 200 mM NaCl induced nearly identical Lp(r) reductions in barley roots. Furthermore, the water transport activity in intact barley roots was suggested to require phosphorylation that is sensitive to a kinase inhibitor, staurosporine. HvPIP2s also showed water efflux activity in Xenopus oocytes, suggesting a potential ability to mediate water loss from cells under hypertonic conditions. Water transport via HvPIP aquaporins and the significance of reductions of Lp(r) in barley plants during salinity stress are discussed.  相似文献

Water deficit is a serious environmental stress and the major constraint to rice productivity. Losses in rice yield due to water shortage probably exceed losses from all other causes combined and the extent of the yield loss depends on both the severity and duration of the water stress. Drought affects rice at morphological, physiological, and molecular levels such as delayed flowering, reduced dry matter accumulation and partitioning, and decreased photosynthetic capacity as a result of stomatal closure, metabolic limitations, and oxidative damage to chloroplasts. Small-statured rice plants with reduced leaf area and short growth duration are better able to tolerate drought stress, although the mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Increased water uptake by developing larger and deeper root systems, and the accumulation of osmolytes and osmoprotectants are other important mechanisms for drought resistance. Drought resistance in rice has been improved by using plant growth regulators and osmoprotectants. In addition, several enzymes have been found that act as antioxidants. Silicon has also improved drought resistance in rice by silicification of the root endodermis and improving water uptake. Seed priming improves germination and crop stand establishment under drought. Rice plants expressing HVA1, LEA proteins, MAP kinase, DREB and endo-1, 3-glucanase are better able to withstand drought stress. Polyamines and several enzymes act as antioxidants and reduce adverse effects of drought stress in rice. Drought resistance can be managed by developing and selecting drought-tolerant genotypes. Rice breeding and screening may be based on growth duration, root system, photosynthesis traits, stomatal frequency, specific leaf weight, leaf water potential, and yield in target environments. This review discusses recent developments in integrated approaches, such as genetics, breeding and resource management to increase rice yield and reduce water demand for rice production.  相似文献

Climate change is expected to increase drought frequency and intensity which will threaten plant growth and survival. In such fluctuating environments, perennial plants respond with hydraulic and biomass adjustments, resulting in either tolerant or avoidant strategies. Plants' response to stress relies on their phenotypic plasticity. The goal of this study was to explore physiology of young Populus nigra in the context of a time‐limited and progressive water deficit in regard to their growth and stress response strategies. Fourteen French 1‐year‐old black poplar genotypes, geographically contrasted, were subjected to withholding water during 8 days until severe water stress. Water fluxes (i.e. leaf water potentials and stomatal conductance) were analyzed together with growth (i.e. radial and longitudinal branch growth, leaf senescence and leaf production). Phenotypic plasticity was calculated for each trait and response strategies to drought were deciphered for each genotype. Black poplar genotypes permanently were dealing with a continuum of adjusted water fluxes and growth between two extreme strategies, tolerance and avoidance. Branch growth, leaf number and leaf hydraulic potential traits had contrasted plasticities, allowing genotype characterization. The most tolerant genotype to water deficit, which maintained growth, had the lowest global phenotypic plasticity. Conversely, the most sensitive and avoidant genotype ceased growth until the season's end, had the highest plasticity level. All the remaining black poplar genotypes were close to avoidance with average levels of traits plasticity. These results underpinned the role of plasticity in black poplar response to drought and calls for its wider use into research on plants' responses to stress.  相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids varying in drought tolerance were treated with water stress in controlled environments. Experiments were performed during vegetative growth and water was withheld for 19 days beginning 17 days after sowing. Genotypic comparisons used measured changes of leaf water potential or results were expressed by time of treatment. Total dry matter of the drought tolerant hybrid on the final harvest was 53% less than that of the intermediate and susceptible maize hybrids when plants were water sufficient. This showed that maize hybrids selected for extreme drought tolerance possessed a dwarf phenotype that affected soil water contents and leaf water potentials. Changes of shoot and root growth, leaf water potential, net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance in response to the time of water stress treatment were diminished when comparing the drought tolerant to the intermediate or susceptible maize hybrids. Genotypic differences were observed in 26 of 40 total foliar metabolites during water stress treatments. Hierarchical clustering revealed that the tolerant maize hybrid initiated the accumulation of stress related metabolites at higher leaf water potentials than either the susceptible or intermediate hybrids. Opposite results occurred when changes of metabolites in maize leaves were expressed temporally. The above results demonstrated that genotypic differences were readily observed by comparing maize hybrids differing in drought tolerance based on either time of treatment or measured leaf water potential. Current findings provided new and potentially important insights into the mechanisms of drought tolerance in maize.  相似文献

To determine whether root-to-shoot signalling of soil moisture heterogeneity depended on root distribution, wild-type (WT) and abscisic acid (ABA)-deficient (Az34) barley (Hordeum vulgare) plants were grown in split pots into which different numbers of seminal roots were inserted. After establishment, all plants received the same irrigation volumes, with one pot watered (w) and the other allowed to dry the soil (d), imposing three treatments (1 d: 3 w, 2 d: 2 w, 3 d: 1 w) that differed in the number of seminal roots exposed to drying soil. Root distribution did not affect leaf water relations and had no sustained effect on plant evapotranspiration (ET). In both genotypes, leaf elongation was less and leaf ABA concentrations were higher in plants with more roots in drying soil, with leaf ABA concentrations and water potentials 30% and 0.2 MPa higher, respectively, in WT plants. Whole-pot soil drying increased xylem ABA concentrations, but maximum values obtained when leaf growth had virtually ceased (100 nm in Az34, 330 nm in WT) had minimal effects (<40% leaf growth inhibition) when xylem supplied to detached shoots. Although ABA may not regulate leaf growth in vivo, genetic variation in foliar ABA concentration in the field may indicate different root distributions between upper (drier) and lower (wetter) soil layers.  相似文献

Smirnoff, N., Winslow, M. D. and Stewart, G. R. 1985. Nitratereductase activity in leaves of barley (Hordeum vulgare) anddurum wheat (Triticum durum) during field and rapidly appliedwater deficits.-J. exp. Bot 36: 1200-1208. The effect of field and rapidly applied water deficits on nitratereductase activity in the leaves of two barley varieties andone durum wheat variety was investigated. In field experimentsplants were subjected to irrigation at different rates in threeMediterranean environments by means of a line source sprinklerirrigation system. The environments differed in rainfall andnitrogen fertility. Plant water potentials decreased from –1.5MPa to between –2.5 and –3.0 MPa as the irrigationrate decreased. Nitrate reductase activity in the leaves ofthese plants during heading was either unaffected or sometimesincreased where the least water was supplied. Nitrate reductaseactivity was highest in the plants growing with an ample nitrogensupply irrespective of water regime. In contrast, seedlingssubject to rapidly applied water stress over 6 d lost 30-85%of their nitrate reductase activity when leaf water potentialfell from between –0.33 and –0.75 MPa to between–O.93 and –2.04 MPa. The decrease was less in theyoung leaves than in the old leaves. Polyethylene glycol inducedosmotic stress resulted in a drop in leaf water potential from–0.20 MPa to between –1.05 and –1.20 MPa alongwith a loss of 40-85% of leaf nitrate reductase activity after48 h. It is suggested that maintenance of nitrate reductase activityin field grown barley and durum wheat plants reflects an acclimationto water deficit Maintenance of nitrate assimilation duringwater stress may allow continued synthesis of nitrogenous compatiblesolutes using the excess photochemical energy available duringstomatal closure. We examined the roles of turgor potential and osmotic adjustment in plant growth by comparing the growth of spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum cv. Siete cerrors) and sudangrass ( Sorghum vulgare var. Piper) seedlings in response to soil water and temperature stresses. The rates of leaf area expansion, leaf water potential and osmotic potential were measured at combinations of 5 soil water potentials ranging from −0.03 to −0.25 MPa and 6 soil temperatures ranging from 14 to 36°C. Spring wheat exhibited little osmotic adjustment while sudangrass exhibited a high degree of osmotic adjustment. However, the rate of leaf area growth for sudangrass was more sensitive to water stress than that of spring wheat. These results were used to evaluate the relationship between growth and turgor potential. The modified Arrhenius equation based on thermodynamic considerations of the growth process was evaluated. This equation obtains growth rate as a function of activation energy, enthalpy difference between active and inactive states of enzymes, base growth rate and optimum temperature. Analyses indicate that the modified Arrhenius equation is consistent with the Lockhart equation with a metabolically controlled cell wall extensibility.  相似文献

The responses to water stress of the bulk modulus of elasticity () and the apoplastic water fraction were examined using six sunflower cultivars of differing capacity for osmotic adjustment (OA). Water stress did not affect the partitioning of water between apoplastic (ca. 20%) and symplastic fractions in leaves which expanded during the exposure to stress in any genotype. Hence, no genotype-linked effects on either the buffering of cell water status during stress or on the estimates of bulk leaf osmotic potential could be expected. Genotypes differed in the degree of change in (estimated from pressure/volume [P/V] curves) and OA (estimated using both ln RWC/ ln o plots and P/V curves) induced by exposure to stress. In three genotypes increased significantly (p=0.05) as a consequence of stress, in another three change were small. OA was the only attribute of the three examined that could have contributed to turgor maintenance under stress. There was a strong negative association between leaf expansion and degree of OA across genotypes (r=–0.91) and a strong positive one between OA and (r=0.94). However all genotypes evidenced some degree of OA. These results are consistent with part of the genotype differences in OA being attributable to variations in leaf expansion during exposure to stress.  相似文献
