Bag-type enclosures (75 m3) with bottom sheets and tube-type enclosures (105 m3) open to the bottom sediment were stocked with exotic whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus maraena) to study their predation effects on the plankton community. The fish fed mainly on adult chironomids during the period of their emergence (earlier part of the experimental period). Thereafter, the food preference was shifted to larvae of chironomids and crustacean zooplankters. The predation effects on the plankton community were not evident in the bag-type enclosures where zooplankton densities were consistently low. The fish reduced the crustacean populations composed ofBosmina fatalis, B. longirostris andCyclops vicinus in the tube-type enclosures where the prey density was high (above ca. 50 individuals 1−1). The results suggested that the intensity of predation depended on the prey density. Rotifers increased in the fish enclosure, probably becauseCoregonus reduced the predation pressure byCyclops vicinus on rotifers and allowed the latter to increase. In the fish enclosures, no marked changes in species composition were observed. Zooplankton predated by the fish seemed to be distributed near the walls of the enclosures. Problems of enclosure experiments for examining the effects of fish predation on pelagic zooplankton communities are discussed.

Summary Transparency reduces the chances of detection of large planktonic animals by visual predators. An important constraint on the transparency of planktonic animals may be ingested food which could be seen through the body, thereby increasing the vulnerability of transparent zooplankton to visual predators. To test this hypothesis, we presented fed and un-fed Chaoborus larvae to juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch). Overall, the presence of prey in the gut of Chaoborus increased their probability of capture by 68%. Predation risks due to the visibility of ingested food increased in proportion to meal size: larvae with nearly full gut were captured about three times faster on the average than larvae which had little food in their gut. Although Chaoborus larvae may be able to reduce this increased predation risk by migrating downward to low light levels, this behavior would reduce feeding opportunities by removing the larvae from surface waters where prey density is generally high. In this way, visual predators may limit the growth and the maximum size that can be achieved by transparent animals.

Predator-limited population growth of the copepod Pseudocalanus sp.
The impact of predators on population growth of Pseudocalanussp. was investigated in Dabob Bay, Washington. Mortality ofPseudocalanus sp. was determined from stage-specific survivorship, from seasonal changes in mortality rates of adult males andfemales and from incidence of injuries to adult copepods. Theprincipal predators of adult Pseudocalanus were identified asthe predatory copepod Euchaeta elongata, the omnivorous euphausiidEuphausia pacifica and the chaetognath Sagirta elegans. Predatorattack rates - and prey mortality rates - are highly density-dependentand thus sensitive to prey dispersion in the water column, particularlyto layering in the vertical plane. Predation rates by the threeprincipal predators exceeded 100% of the recruitment rate toadult Pseudocalanus sp. beginning in early summer, thus restrictingpopulation growth. Planktivorous fish predation (by adult three-spinestickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, and juvenile chum salmon,Oncorhynchus keta) on Pseudocalanus sp. adults was estimatedto be two orders of magnitude lower than consumption rates bypredatory zooplankton, at a deep water station in July. Analysisof seasonal changes in prey ingested by Sagitta elegans revealedthat Pseudocalanus sp. was the major prey item of S. elegansin April (61.0% of prey) and in June (67.0% of prey), thereafterdeclining seasonally in importance. Predation by S. elegansvaried seasonally with changes in chaetognath stage structure, vertical distribution and diapause, not size structure alone.Although chaetognath recruitment and population growth appearto be directly coupled to the abundance of Pseudocalanus sp.,predation by S. elegans has little reciprocal impact on Pseudocalanussp. population growth; hence asymmetries may occur in the interaction of planktonic prey and predators.

Short term, replicated experimental alteration of densities of a predatory water mite Piona exigua Viets, inside 0.45–0.475 m3 litre enclosures, revealed little evidence of the effects of predation on the number and relative abundance of the enclosed zooplankton species. Predation rates more closely approximated those estimated from single prey functional response experiments in the second experimental period (December) than in the first (March). In December Daphnia was the only susceptible taxon present in large numbers, whereas in March, Ceriodaphnia and Chydorus were also present. This result is consistent with laboratory findings that predation rates are lowered in the presence of more than one prey type. The difficulty of obtaining evidence for significant effects of these planktonic predators is in part due to changes in the preferred prey species in the diet of Piona depending on stage and sex of the mite and to aspects of experimental design. The wide variability between replicate enclosures at each predator density reduced the power of the statistical analyses used to test the null hypothesis. Enclosures with no predators are necessary to investigate the effects of enclosure on the zooplankton prey, since these effects may outweigh those due to predator consumption.

Functional response curves of fourth instar larvae ofChaoborus flavicans preying on two size classes ofDaphnia longispina were examined throughout three summer seasons in a small forest lake. Data for each size class were fitted to Holling's disc equation. The parametersa (attack rate) andTh (handling time) were calculated for each prey size from these curves. Attack rate was greater and handling time was shorter for small (0.77 mm) than for large (1.82 mm)Daphnia. In 1:1 mixture of these prey size classes the predation rates ofChaoborus on smallDaphnia at prey densities above 20 l–1 were greater than predicted from the single size-class experiments. The observed predation rates on largeDaphnia were lower than predicted at all prey densities. Since both single size-class and two size-class experiments were run during the same period of time the difference in observed and predicted predation rates could not be attributed to seasonal changes in prey preference ofChaoborus larvae. In experiments with a concentrated mixture of lake zooplankton (dominated byD. longispina)Chaoborus preference forDaphnia decreased as prey body size increased. There was no obvious correlation between selectivity coefficients and size-frequency distributions ofDaphnia. When medium-sizedDaphnia were omitted from calculations the preference of small over large prey did not differ significantly from the predictions of the single size-class model.

Knowledge of how energetic parameters relate to fluctuating factors in the natural habitat is necessary when evaluating the role of gelatinous zooplankton in the carbon flow of coastal waters. In laboratory experiments, we assessed feeding, respiration and growth of the ctenophore, Pleurobrachia pileus, and constructed carbon budgets. Clearance rates (F, l d−1) of laboratory-reared Acartia tonsa as prey increased as a function of ctenophore polar length (L, mm) as F = 0.17L 1.9. For ctenophores larger than about 11 mm, clearance rate was depressed in containers of 30–50 l volume. Clearance rates on field-collected prey were highest on the copepod, Centropages typicus, intermediate on the cladoceran, Evadne nordmanni and low on the copepods, Acartia clausi and Temora longicornis. Specific growth rates of 8–10 mm P. pileus increased with increasing prey concentrations to a maximum of 0.09 d−1 attained at prey carbon densities of 40 and 100 μg C l−1 of Artemia salina and A. tonsa, respectively. Weight-specific respiration rates increased hyperbolically with prey concentration. From experiments in which growth, ingestion and respiration were measured simultaneously, a carbon budget was constructed for individuals growing at maximum rates; from the measured parameters, the assimilation efficiency and net growth efficiency were estimated to be 22 and 37%, respectively. We conclude that the predation rates of P. pileus depend on ctenophore size, prey species, prey density and experimental container volume. Because the specific growth rates, respiration, assimilation and net growth efficiencies all were affected by food availability, knowledge of the ambient prey field is critical when evaluating the role of P. pileus in the carbon flow in coastal waters.

A persistent large-scale cross-shelf gradient in zooplanktonbiomass >1050 µm was evident off south-western NovaScotia during annual spring surveys between 1985 and 1987, withrelatively low levels inshore and higher levels offshore. Conversely, the abundance of the tentaculate ctenophore Pleurobrachia pileuswas the greatest inshore, and distributed reciprocally to zooplankton>1050 µm. The principle prey of both adult ctenophoresand post-larval cod is zooplankton >1050 µm (primarilycalanoid copepods), and cod growth rates are strongly influencedby prey biomass. Ctenophore predation appears to have been responsiblefor the low nearshore zooplankton biomass, whereas the influenceof hydrographic factors on the zooplankton gradient was minimal. On a smaller scale, persistent, abrupt changes in zooplanktonbiomass >1050 µm and ctenophore density existed 3–30km from shore, in contrast to linear gradients in water density(1) during a 5 week sampling period in spring 1987. Ctenophoreswere confined to depths <55 m and zooplankton >1050 µmpredominantly occurred at depths >55 m. High concentrationsof chlorophyll and phaeopigment were evident at depths <55m also suggesting intense predation by ctenophores on largeherbivores. The relatively high proportion of smaller zooplankton(153–308 –m) in the nearshore is also consistentwith the predation hypothesis. The reduced growth experiencedby post-larval cod inshore appears generated by ctenophore predationof a common prey resource.

Trophodynamics and predation impact of the 2 dominant chaetognaths Eukrohnia hamata and Sagitta gazellae were investigated at 19 stations in the vicinity of the Prince Edward Islands and at a 24-h station occupied at the sub-Antarctic Front in late summer (April/May) 1996. During the entire investigation, the zooplankton assemblages were numerically dominated by copepods with densities ranging from 21 to 170 ind. m−3. Amongst the copepods, Clausocalanus brevipes, Metridia gerlachei and M. lucens dominated accounting for >90% of the total. Generally, chaetognaths were identified as the second most important group composing at times up to 30% (mean = 14.7%) of total zooplankton abundance. Of the two chaetognath species, E.␣hamata was generally numerically dominant. Gut content analysis showed that both chaetognath species are opportunistic predators generally feeding on the most abundant prey, copepods. No feeding patterns were evident during the 24-h station, suggesting that both species feed continuously. The feeding rates of E. hamata ranged from 0 to 0.50 prey ind. day−1 and between 0 and 0.90 prey ind. day−1 for S. gazellae. The maximum total predation impact of E. hamata was equivalent to 5.2% of the copepod standing stock or up to 103% of copepod production per day. For S. gazellae the predation impact was lower, reaching a level of 3.2% of the copepod standing stock or 63% of the daily copepod production. Chaetognaths can, therefore, be regarded as an important pelagic predator of the Prince Edward Islands subsystem.

Community level effects of predation by two invertebrate predators, the opossum shrimp (Neomysis intermedia), and the larva of the phantom midge (Chaoborus flavicans) were studied and compared. N. intermedia appeared abundantly in the shallow eutrophic Lake Kasumigaura and had a significant impact on the zooplankton community. The predation pressure by Neomysis was highest on cladocerans, followed by rotifers, and finally copepods. At high densities (maximum nearly 20 000 individuals m–2), Neomysis excluded almost all cladocerans, rotifers and copepods from the lake.Zooplankton communities were established in experimental ponds, into which C. flavicans was introduced. The predator's density was around 1 individual l–1, and was probably controled by cannibalism. Although Chaoborus larvae feed on various zooplankton species, their predation impact on zooplankton populations was markedly selective. They eliminated medium- and small-sized cladocerans and calanoid copepods from the ponds, but rotifers increased.Although the feeding selectivities of Neomysis and Chaoborus individuals were similar, the predation effects on zooplankton communities by the two predators were different.

The shrimp Caridina nilotica is a major prey of the introduced Nile perch in Lake Victoria. In spite of heavy predation, the density of shrimps increased after the Nile perch boom and the concomitant disappearance of the haplochromine cichlids. In the same period, the mean size of gravid shrimps and the size at first maturity declined. This seems to indicate an increased predation pressure on adult shrimps. Before the Nile perch upsurge, specialised shrimp eaters and piscivores, among the haplochromine cichlids, only took adult shrimps, whereas we assume that most haplochromines used to include juvenile shrimps into their diet. Another important predator on adult shrimps was Bagrus docmak. The combined density of predators on adult shrimps in the pre-Nile perch era was estimated at 10 kg ha−1 and the potential predators on juveniles were estimated at 170 kg ha−1. After the Nile perch upsurge, only Nile perch up to 10 cm TL and Rastrineobola argentea fed on juvenile shrimps (ca. 36 kg ha−1) and Nile perch from 10 to 50 cm TL (ca. 13 kg ha−1) fed on adults. These rough estimates of the biomass of predators on shrimps before and after the Nile perch upsurge indicate a reduced predation pressure on juvenile shrimps. The disappearance of the haplochromines may have released competition with small Nile perch for juvenile shrimps, thus enhancing the recruitment of Nile perch.

Ecological investigtions onPleurobrachia pileus. 1. Field studies
The tentaculate ctenophorePleurobrachia pileus Fabr. belongs to the most abundant holoplanktonic zooplankters of the German Bight (North Sea). Its population dynamics have been studied from May 1966 to August 1968. Samples were taken mainly near the island Helgoland; hence the survey on population dynamics, which depend upon the complicated hydrographical conditions of the German Bight, is quite limited. Plankton samples were taken either as surface hauls in turbulent water, or as Hensen vertical hauls or horizontal hauls with the Knüppelnetz. In all three years the annual cycle ofP. pileus reveals a characteristic population increase from March to the end of May, followed by a steep population decrease. Maximum abundances varied from about 20 individuals per m3 to about 1 individual per m3. The population increase corresponds to the spring plankton bloom. The decrease is mainly due to the influence ofBeroe gracilis, whose population dynamics were also studied, as well as those ofBolinopsis infundibulum andBeroe cucumis. IfP. pileus andB. gracilis were abundant in spring,P. pileus could not be found during the subsequent summer, but reappeared in autumn and winter. In 1967, whenP. pileus andB. gracilis were less abundant, representatives could be caught throughout the following months. The population dynamics ofPleurobrachia pileus andBeroe gracilis, as well as ofBolinopsis infundibulum andBeroe cucumis, provide examples of ecological feedback systems.

Natural predation first instar larvae of the cotton leafworm (CLW)A. argillacea was studied in cotton fields in Jaboticabal, Sao Paulo State, Brazil, during 1986. The presence of naturally occurring arthropod predators showed a first instar larvae predation rate of 78.6 and 88.9% after 24 h and 48 h of exposure, respectively. A predator prey ratio of 1∶1 (1 CLW key predator per 1 prey/plant) maintained a level of no more than 1 CLW small larvae per plant. The most evident arthropod predators in the studied fields were: beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), antsPheidole sp. andConomyrma sp.;Dermaptera Doru lineare (Eschs);Hemiptera Geocoris sp., andOrius insidiosus Say; and the spidersTheridion volubile, Chrysso pulcherrima, Misumenops sp.,Chiracanthium sp., andOxyopes salticus Hentz.

Large planktonic Cladocera are typically the most important components of the diet of underyearling roach. Selection for large species and individuals by fish can result in a shift in the species composition of the cladoceran community as well as a reduction in the mean size of the individuals of large species and in the assemblage as a whole. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that underyearlings feeding on Daphnia hyalina smaller than 1 mm in length has a significantly lower intake of prey volume per unit time than when feeding on prey greater than 1.5 mm. A decrease in the nutritional quality of zooplankton prey, brought about by increasing predation pressure is suggested as the mechanism for density-dependent reductions in the growth of underyearling roach in eutrophic water bodies.

Synopsis The bloater, Coregonus hoyi, deposits its eggs on deep sediments (70–100 m in Lake Michigan), where its eggs and embryos can be exposed to epibenthic predators. We investigated the vulnerability of early life intervals of bloaters to predation by mysids, Mysis relicta, which are mostly epibenthic by day and planktonic at night. Bloaters were raised from spawn in the laboratory and presented to field-collected mysids in laboratory predation trials. Eggs were not ingested by the mysids. Embryonic bloaters were vulnerable to predation by mysids only during the interval between hatching and swim up, usually 1–24 h under laboratory conditions. The mysids required about a day of exposure to this novel prey before they were able to kill significant numbers of the bloater embryos by making successive attacks with their thoracic legs. In experiments with experienced (2 and 3 days with bloater embryos) mysids, a functional response between embryo density and mysid predation rates was apparent. Temperature and the presence of alternative prey (zooplankton) did not alter the ‘kill rate’ (about 2.5 embryos mysid-1d-1) of experienced mysids at high bloater densities (>4 bloaters/mysid). However, more embryos were partially, rather than completely, ingested at 4 versus 9° C and in the presence of zooplankton.

The responses of 3 phytoseiid mite speciesPhytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot,Phytoseius finitimus Ribaga andAmblyseius gossipi Elbadry to allelochemics emitted by prey mite speciesTetranychus urticae Koch,Brevipalpus pulcher (Canestrini & Fanzago) andEriophyes dioscoridis Soliman & Abou-Awad were studied using a test of two-choice assays. The repellent effect elicited by the tenuipalpid mite,B. pulcher and the eriophyid mite,E. dioscoridis againstP. persimilis could be an evidence for the existence of allomones produced by these 2 prey species. The negative response ofP. persimilis to the different stadia ofB. pulcher and the attraction ofP. finitimus toward the same prey suggest that the volatile semiochemicals produced by this prey act as kairomones forP. finitimus and as allomones forP. persimilis. The strong attraction ofP. finitimus andA. gossipi to the different stadia ofT. urticae and the considerable attraction of either predator toB. pulcher compared to the neutral response toE. dioscoridis reveal that both predators show a hierarchy of preference for the kairomones of the 3 prey species studied.

Planktonic predators and copepod abundance near the Dutch coast
Hypotheses that planktonic predators are responsible for thespring-summer decrease in copepod abundance and that the dominantpredator, Pleurobrachia pileus, is associated with high concentrationsof copepods were investigated at a station near the Dutch coast.Neither hypothesis was supported. Predators and copepods weresampled together with a 156 L ‘water box’ from lateApril through early July, including the season of P.pileus abundance.Using predators and copepods from the same box samples, hencefrom the same water parcel, feeding rates on copepod naupliiand copepodites + adults were measured onboard ship. Less than6% of the copepods, the sensitivity of the method, were removedper day. In additional shipboard feeding experiments net-caughtP.pileus were added to ambient copepod densities. By combiningwater volume cleared of copepods with ambient P.pileus densityin the sea, the predicted impact was 0–1.6% of copepodseaten per day from late April to early July. The hypothesisthat P.pileus associates with copepod concentrations was testedby comparing abundances of both groups from the same box samples. The correlations were not significant for any sample series. The ways measurement methods have restricted progress in understandingthe predatory impact of Pleurobrachia sp. are also considered.

Limnologists have long recognized the importance of predation in freshwater communities. The majority of study of predator effects has involved vertebrate predators, with emphasis on planktivorous fish. Documented effects of planktivorous fish have been so dramatic that manipulations of their populations are seen by many as potential tools in lake management. However, the success of such manipulations is often less than desired due to the ubiquitous complexity of food webs and the pervasiveness of compensatory responses to food web manipulation. Recently, enormous effort has been applied to the Lake Kinneret pelagic food web in effort to reduced the abundance of the planktivorous Kinneret bleak Acanthobrama terraesanctae and thereby increase the biomass of herbivorous zooplankton in the hopes of increasing water clarity. We compared potential predation pressure on Lake Kinneret herbivorous zooplankton by bleak and the other major zooplankton predators in the lake, the cyclopoid copepods Mesocyclops ogunnus and Thermocyclops dybowskii. We found that, despite having much lower biomass, cyclopoid copepods accounted for a greater portion of the predation mortality on herbivorous zooplankton than bleak. Our results suggest that reductions in predation pressure by bleak will not yield subsequent increases in herbivorous zooplankton biomass. Rather, reductions in bleak predation pressure may allow for increases in cyclopoid copepod abundance and thereby a net increase in predation pressure on herbivorous zooplankton.

Competitive interactions in arthropod predators are well-known, but positive interactions have received less attention. The two-spotted stinkbugPerillus bioculatus often feeds gregariously on leaf beetle larvae and caterpillar prey. Consequences of prey sharing amongP. bioculatus conspecifics of dissimilar size (instar) was studied using Colorado potato beetle (CPB) prey. Rearing second-instar (N2) nymphs ofP. bioculatus with an N5 conspecific facilitated early feeding on L4 CPB larvae (a difficult prey to handle by N2 nymphs but not by N5’s), thus increasing survival and accelerating development. One in every 20 cases ofP. bioculatus foraging in the field was accounted for by pairs or small groups of mostly feeding individuals. CPB egg masses and L4’s represented a disproportionate number of cases of aggregated feeding byP. bioculatus, compared to feeding singly. Small CPB larvae decreased in the diet of aggregated stinkbugs compared to L4 larvae and egg masses, suggesting that sharing these prey may be favorable or unavoidable. In a field test measuring residence/survival of N2’s limited to L4 prey, the N2’s rate of residence/survival increased significantly when large nymphs acting as food providers were also present. The function of communal feeding inP. bioculatus is discussed, as well as the potential for greater impact on prey density that may be expected from tolerance to opportunistic feeding by conspecifics in slightly gregarious predators.

Synopsis Juvenile bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus, are known to use beds of aquatic vegetation as a refuge from predators. This study examines the effects of increasing plant stem density on juvenile bluegill foraging. Three stem densities (100, 250 and 500 stems m−2), varying in their refuge potential for bluegills from predators, were tested. Results demonstrate that stem densities chosen as a refuge from predation (i.e. 500 stems m−2) significantly reduced bluegill foraging success and increased time required to capture prey. Therefore, juvenile bluegills seeking safety in vegetation may be faced with a trade-off between foraging success and effective refuge from predation when choosing among plant stem densities.

Arboreal arthropod communities were censused by insecticidal knockdown in a plantation of Japanese cedar,Cryptomeria japonica, in central Japan from April 1983 to February 1985 at intervals of two months. All arthropods sampled were allocated to higher taxonomic groups or guilds and the composition of the communities was analyzed with respect to abundance, biomass and their seasonal trends. The total densities fluctuated seasonally from 200 to 3500 m−2; corresponding biomass values ranged from 7 to 600 mg fresh weight m−2. Maximum density and biomass generally occurred in summer and were minimum in winter. The consistently dominant guild in terms of abundance were the detritivores, mostly comprising Collembola and oribatid mites, accounting for 36–93% of all arthropods; phytophages, predators and detritivores were major guilds in terms of biomass, showing average proportions of 27%, 23% and 20%, respectively. Biomass ratios of predators to prey were generally high in some canopy communities, suggesting the importance of predation pressure in regulating the population levels of arthropods in forests. Average individual size of predators was approximately proportional to that of prey, irrespective of tree locality. Soil arthropod communities maintained densities approximately 102–103 times as large as the corresponding canopy communities throughout the year. The seasonal variations in abundance were much greater in canopy than in soil communities.
