Synopsis Animals that forage for discrete, isolated resources are often characterized as either ambush (sit-and-wait) or cruise (active) searchers. Juvenile white crappie, Pomoxis annularis, search for zooplankton prey using a saltatory search (SS) strategy. Unlike ambush and cruise search, SS involves scanning for prey only during the brief stationary periods that punctuate repositioning movements. If prey are not found, these fish swim a short distance, stop, and scan again. In this paper, we describe the ontogeny of prey search in the white crappie and compare the search pattern that they employ with that of juveniles. White crappie larvae searched for prey throughout the search space and only during the pauses that punctuated swimming movements. Prey location distances increased with fish size, as did several other components of the predation cycle. We conclude that white crappie larvae employ a search strategy similar to that exhibited by juveniles. We emphasize that, to obtain an accurate assessment of the feeding ecology of early life history stages, the search pattern that they employ must be characterized, and its components quantified.  相似文献

Synopsis Black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus) were collected weekly from a natural lake during the period mid-April to mid-September. The fish were weighed, state of maturity determined and RNA-DNA ratio of white muscle was measured. Water temperature and primary production were measured in the lake. RNA-DNA ratio declined during the spawning season, reaching a low in mid-May, then increased steadily during the remainder of the year. RNA-DNA ratio was significantly correlated with body weight. The correlation was improved if RNA-DNA ratio was paired with weight for the following week. The correlation was further improved when the spawning season was removed from the data set. Both weight and RNA-DNA ratios were significantly correlated with water temperature, as expected. The correlations were again improved if water temperature was paired with weight and RNA-DNA values for the following week. Weight and RNA-DNA ratio were also correlated with primary production when the correlation was made with concurrent values, and the correlations were improved when RNA-DNA ratio or weight were paired with primary production values for the previous month. RNA-DNA ratio was determined to be a useful predictor of skeletal muscle growth in natural populations of fish over short (ca. one week) time intervals.  相似文献

White crappie, Pomoxis annularis, and black crappie, P. nigromaculatus, were hybridized to produce Fi and F2 generations. There was considerable tissue specific esterase gene function within each parental species. Many of the esterases were homologous but possessed different electrophoretic mobilities between the two species which permitted their use as gene markers. The pattern of inheritance and expression of a number of esterase genes was determined in the Fi and F2 interspecific hybrids. Although certain key morphological phenotypes characteristic of the black crappie predominate in the Fi hybrid, the enzyme phenotypes reflect the contributions of both co-dominant parental genomes. There is a higher percentage of heterozygotes than expected in the F2 generation which may be indicative of heterosis. The genetic analysis also provided a better understanding of the polypeptide composition of these esterases.  相似文献

We assessed population structure and food habits of white crappie Pomoxis annuluris Rafinesque in Lake Carl Blackwell, a turbid reservoir in north-central Oklahoma, U.S.A. White crappie [ n = 8549; total length ( t.l. ) mean = 147 mm, s.d. = 28 mm, range = 73–445 mm] were collected with gillnets, frame nets, and hoop nets. Proportional stock density was 2, as 97% of the fish were under 200 mm t.l . Relative stock density was 96, 2, 1, and 1 for 'stock-quality', 'quality-preferred', 'preferred-memorable', and 'memorable-trophy' lengths. Total annual mortality rate was 54% for fish older than 2 years. Growth was poor and lower than the Oklahoma-Arkansas regional averages ( P <0.01). Relative weights were 79, 86, 106, 109, and 123 for fish in the stock-quality, quality-preferred, preferred-memorable, memorable-trophy, and trophy size categories. Ephemeroptera nymphs were an important dietary component for fish 150 mm t.l. or smaller. Gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum (Lesueur) was a major forage item, especially for fish greater than 150 mm t.l. ( P <0.01). Empirical information on prey availability indicates that the white crappie population is forage limited and that gizzard shad are not available in appropriate sizes or sufficient numbers to sustain the predator population. Poor fish condition, slow growth, and high mortality are probably the result of inadequate forage.  相似文献

The regulation of gene expression during embryogenesis was investigated in white and black crappie (Pomoxis spp.) and their reciprocal interspecific F1 hybrids. The schedule of morphological development and the timing of isozyme expression were compared among the two species and both reciprocal maternal half-sibling F1 hybrids. Although absolute rates of morphological development differed in response to incubation temperature, relative rates of morphological development (normalized to the onset of retinal pigment deposition) were similar among all crosses. Furthermore, these relative rates were similar to those previously documented for other centrarchid species. To assess differences in ontogenetic patterns of gene expression among the crosses, we examined expression for 39 enzymeencoding loci. Expression was not detected in the embryos for 16 loci due to low or nonexistent activity. Enzymatic activity from eight other loci were continuously detected throughout embryogenesis as a result of maternal enzyme in the egg. However, 15 loci initiated expression during the early development period investigated (fertilization through yolk sac absorption). We observed temporal variability in expression of these 15 loci among the crosses, either in the form of differential expression between parental species or as disturbances in the ontogeny of expression in interspecific hybrids. Such variability in expression suggests that some of the gene regulating mechanisms have diverged since Pomoxis species shared a common ancestral genome. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In this study, an outdoor pool experiment was used to evaluate the effect of prey resources during 4 months before spawning on the gonadal investments of male and female white crappie Pomoxis annularis , a popular freshwater sportfish that exhibits erratic recruitment. Fish were assigned one of three feeding treatments: starved, fed once every 5 days (intermediate) or fed daily (high). All measurements of male testes ( i.e. wet mass, energy density and spermatocrit) were similar across treatments. Conversely, high-fed females produced larger ovaries than those of intermediate-fed and starved fish, and invested more energy in their ovaries than starved fish. Compared to pre-experiment fish, starved and intermediate-fed females appeared to increase their ovary size by relying on liver energy stores ('capital' spawning). Conversely, high-fed females increased liver and gonad mass, implying an 'income'-spawning strategy (where gonads are built from recently acquired energy). Fecundity did not differ among treatments, but high-fed fish built larger eggs than those starved. Females rarely 'skipped' spawning opportunities when prey resources were low, as only 8% of starved females and 8% of intermediate-fed females lacked vitellogenic eggs. These results suggest that limited prey resources during the months before spawning can limit ovary production, which, in turn, can limit reproductive success of white crappies.  相似文献

Crappie, Pomoxis annularis , from Lake Decatur, Illinois, were reported to have a high incidence of backbone deformities, an investigation was initiated to determine both the mechanism of vertebral injury and the causative agent. Three groups of fish were collected: normally shaped and abnormally shaped crappies from Lake Decatur and control fish from abnormally shaped crappies from Lake Decatur and control fish from nearby Lake Sangchris. Analysis of organic and inorganic residue levels in fish tissue revealed no significant levels of contaminants in any of the three groups. Evaluation of the mechanical properties, biochemical composition, and density characteristic of vertebral bone showed no significant difference between the three groups. A myxosporidean parasite, found in both normal and abnormally shaped crappies from Lake Decatur, may have been a contributing factor leading to the spinal deformities. We believe that a short-term exposure to organophosphate insecticides, may have occurred causing muscular contractions and resulting in vertebral damage and abnormally shaped fish.  相似文献

Thirty-eight dugong (Dugong dugon) hearts and 28 Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus) hearts were obtained from stranding programs in Australia and the United States. In addition to a double ventricular apex, a feature that has astonished scientists since the eighteenth century, the hearts of both animals have a double subvalvular conus and a dorsal left atrium. The heart lies in a vertical plane at right angles to that of the completely dorsal, symmetrical lungs. The dugong heart has a deeper interventricular cleft and a more conical left ventricle. The latter features may be part of a general morphological trend toward specialization for a more energetic aquatic existence. The presence of a bulbous ascending aorta in the manatee but not in the dugong is without explanation.  相似文献

The localization of Mn(2+) in A-tract DNA has been studied by (1)H NMR spectroscopy using a series of self-complementary dodecamer oligonucleotides that contain the sequence motifs A(n)(n) and T(n)A(n), where n = 2, 3, or 4. Mn(2+) localization in the minor groove is observed for all the sequences that have been studied, with the position and degree of localization being highly sequence-dependent. The site most favored for Mn(2+) localization in the minor groove is near the 5'-most ApA step for both the T(n)A(n) and the A(n)T(n) series. For the T(n)A(n) series, this results in two closely spaced symmetry-related Mn(2+) localization sites near the center of each duplex, while for the A(n)T(n) series, the two symmetry-related sites are separated by as much as one half-helical turn. The degree of Mn(2+) localization in the minor groove of the T(n)A(n) series decreases substantially as the AT sequence element is shortened from T(4)A(4) to T(2)A(2). The A(n)T(n) series also exhibits length-dependent Mn(2+) localization; however, the degree of minor groove occupancy by Mn(2+) is significantly less than that observed for the T(n)A(n) series. For both A(n)T(n) and T(n)A(n) sequences, the 3'-most AH2 resonance is the least broadened of the AH2 resonances. This is consistent with the observation that the minor groove of A-tract DNA narrows in the 5' to 3' direction, apparently becoming too narrow after two base pairs for the entry of a fully hydrated divalent cation. The results that are reported illustrate the delicate interplay that exists between DNA nucleotide sequence, minor groove width, and divalent cation localization. The proposed role of cation localization in helical axis bending by A-tracts is also discussed.  相似文献

Ghrelin coded by the GHRL gene is related to weight-gain, its deactivation possibly depending on its hydrolyzation by butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) encoded by the BCHE gene, an enzyme already associated with the body mass index (BMI). The aim was to search for relationships between SNPs of the GHRL and BCHE genes with BChE activity, BMI and obesity in 144 obese and 153 nonobese Euro-Brazilian male blood donors. In the obese individuals, a significant association with higher BChE activity, in the 72LM+72MM; -116GG genotype class (GHRL and BCHE genes, respectively) was noted. No significant differences were found otherwise, through comparisons between obese and control individuals, of genotype and allele frequencies in SNPs of the GHRL gene (Arg51Gln and Leu72Met), or mean BMI between 72LL and 72LM+72MM genotypes. Although there appears to be no direct relationship between the examined GHRL SNPs and BMI, the association of the 72M SNP with higher BChE activity in obese subjects probably points to a regulatory mechanism, thereby implying the influence of the GHRL gene on BChE expression, and a consequential metabolic role in the complex process of fat utilization.  相似文献

There are key differences between the amino acid residues of the RGD loops and the C termini of echistatin, a potent antagonist of alpha(IIb)beta(3), alpha(v)beta(3) and alpha(5)beta(1), and eristostatin, a similar disintegrin selectively inhibiting alpha(IIb)beta(3). In order to identify echistatin motifs required for selective recognition of alpha(v)beta(3) and alpha(5)beta(1) integrins, we expressed recombinant echistatin, eristostatin, and 15 hybrid molecules. We tested them for their ability to inhibit adhesion of different cell lines to fibronectin and von Willebrand factor and to express ligand-induced binding site epitope. The results showed that Asp(27) and Met(28) support recognition of both alpha(v)beta(3) and alpha(5)beta(1). Replacement of Met(28) with Asn completely abolished echistatin's ability to recognize each of the integrins, while replacement of Met(28) with Leu selectively decreased echistatin's ability to recognize alpha(5)beta(1) only. Eristostatin in which C-terminal WNG sequence was substituted with HKGPAT exhibited new activity with alpha(5)beta(1), which was 10-20-fold higher than that of wild type eristostatin. A hypothesis is proposed that the C terminus of echistatin interacts with separate sites on beta(1) and beta(3) integrin molecules.  相似文献
