The fossil record presents palaeoecological patterns of rise and fall on multiple scales of time and biological organization. Here, we argue that the rise and fall of species can result from a tragedy of the commons, wherein the pursuit of self-interests by individual agents in a larger interactive system is detrimental to the overall performance or condition of the system. Species evolving within particular communities may conform to this situation, affecting the ecological robustness of their communities. Results from a trophic network model of Permian-Triassic terrestrial communities suggest that community performance on geological timescales may in turn constrain the evolutionary opportunities and histories of the species within them.  相似文献

A critical duration of darkness must be exceeded for the photoperiodic induction of flowering in short-day plants. This requires detection of the light/dark transition at dusk and the coupling of this information to a time-measuring system.
Lowering the Pfr/Ptot, ratio photochemically at the end of the day did not accelerate the onset of dark timing in Pharbitis nil Choisy cv. Violet. Time-measurement was initiated when, with no change in spectral quality, the irradiance fell below a threshold value. Thus, if the light/dark transition at dusk is sensed by a reduction in Pfr, this reduction can be achieved as rapidly through thermal reactions as through photochemical ones. When given at hourly intervals during a 6-h extension of a 24-h main light period in white light, pulses of red light were as effective as continuous red light in delaying the onset of timing; pulses every 2 or 3 h were less effective. The effectiveness of intermittent red light indicates that phytochrome is the photoreceptor and the requirement for frequent exposures suggests that Pfr is lost rapidly in the dark. However, the red light pulses could not be reversed by far-red light, which argues against this hypothesis. An alternative explanation is that the perception of light as being continuous occurs only when "new" Pfr is regenerated sufficiently frequently.
The nature of the coupling of the dusk signal to the time-measuring system is discussed and it is suggested that the effect of each red light pulse is to delay the phase of the photoperiodic rhythm by 1–3 h.  相似文献

The amplitude and phasing of circadian rhythms are under discussion as possible predictors of tolerance to night work. In a field study, subjective sleepiness and oral temperature of 147 female nurses were measured at 2-hour intervals during a period with one morning shift and two consecutive night shifts. The nurses also filled out a questionnaire. Two types of tolerance indices were constructed: The “health index” was based on questions referring to general fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, and sleep disturbances, and the “sleepiness index” on the actual subjective ratings of sleepiness. According to the health index, the group with good tolerance had a larger circadian amplitude of the oral temperature rhythm on the day of the morning shift than the group with poor tolerance. However, with regard to the sleepiness index, the corresponding difference between the groups with good or poor tolerance was not significant. The data did not confirm the hypothesis that predicts a quick adjustment of the circadian rhythm when the circadian amplitude is small before the change to night work. The contradictory results found in this and in other studies do not yet permit prediction of tolerance to night work.  相似文献

Functional specialization, or division of labour (DOL), of parts within organisms and colonies is common in most multi-cellular, colonial and social organisms, but it is far from ubiquitous. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the evolutionary origins of DOL; the basic feature common to all of them is that functional differences can arise easily. These mechanisms cannot explain the many groups of colonial and social animals that exhibit no DOL despite up to 500 million years of evolution. Here, I propose a new hypothesis, based on a multi-level selection theory, which predicts that a reproductive DOL is required to evolve prior to subsequent functional specialization. I test this hypothesis using a dataset consisting of the type of DOL for living and extinct colonial and social animals. The frequency distribution of DOL and the sequence of its acquisition confirm that reproductive specialization evolves prior to functional specialization. A corollary of this hypothesis is observed in colonial, social and also within multi-cellular organisms; those species without a reproductive DOL have a smaller range of internal variation, in terms of the number of polymorphs or cell types, than species with a reproductive DOL.  相似文献

The most important message of Levin (Ecol Res 21:328–333, 2006) is that “Ecologists and economists have much incentive for interaction.” Recent studies that account for evolutionary processes and local interactions support this view by obtaining results that run counter to conventional wisdom within resource economics. A second major message of the article is that to meet environmental challenges, humanity must develop social norms that enhance cooperative responses. Successful examples of resource management systems back up norms with economic incentives: rewards for good behavior and punishments for bad. Economic incentives are especially important if rapid and large changes in human behavior are desired.  相似文献

The formation of the embryonic brain requires the production, migration, and differentiation of neurons to be timely and coordinated. Coupling to the photoperiod could synchronize the development of neurons in the embryo. Here, we consider the effect of light and melatonin on the differentiation of embryonic neurons in zebrafish. We examine the formation of neurons in the habenular nuclei, a paired structure found near the dorsal surface of the brain adjacent to the pineal organ. Keeping embryos in constant darkness causes a temporary accumulation of habenular precursor cells, resulting in late differentiation and a long-lasting reduction in neuronal processes (neuropil). Because constant darkness delays the accumulation of the neurendocrine hormone melatonin in embryos, we looked for a link between melatonin signaling and habenular neurogenesis. A pharmacological block of melatonin receptors delays neurogenesis and reduces neuropil similarly to constant darkness, while addition of melatonin to embryos in constant darkness restores timely neurogenesis and neuropil. We conclude that light and melatonin schedule the differentiation of neurons and the formation of neural processes in the habenular nuclei.  相似文献

Abstract Previous research has shown that fundamental properties of the circadian pacemaker that drives the rhythm of locomotor activity in the cockroach Leucophaea maderae L. are permanently altered by exposure of animals to 22 or 26 h light cycles during post-embryonic development (Barrett & Page, 1989; Page & Barrett, 1989). The present results document differences between animals exposed to either constant darkness (DD) or constant light (LL) during postembryonic development in the free-running period, the phase shifting response to light pulses, and the response to an LL to DD transition of the adult pacemaker. In addition, the changes in pacemaker period and in the phase shifting response that result from raising animals in several different lighting conditions are shown to be strongly correlated. The data suggest there is a developmentally labile interdependence between the period of the pacemaker and its sensitivity to light.  相似文献

Energy metabolism and mitochondria have been discussed with respect to their role in the circadian rhythm mechanism for some time. Numerous examples of inhibitors that affect the mitochondria of plants and animals and microorganisms are known, which cause large phase shifts in the rhythms of these organisms. Analogous studies on the role of mitochondria in the Neurospora circadian rhythm mechanism have also been reported and summarized. This communication differs from previous studies on other organisms in that it will focus on two lines of evidence derived from studies on Neurospora strains carrying mutations affecting the mitochondria, (a) Strains whose growth rate is resistant to oligomycin (olit) owing to an altered protein in the F0 sector of the mitochondrial ATPase, showed no phase shifts when pulsed with oligomycin. Control strains (oli8) showed large phase shifts when pulsed with oligomycin. This indicates that the phase-shifting effect of oligomycin is due to the direct inhibition of the mitochondrial ATPase and not some side effect of this inhibitor, (b) In Neurospora, many different strains are known that carry mutations in the nuclear or mitochondrial genome that affect mitochondrially localized proteins. Some of these, such as oli', [MI-3], or cya-5, showed shorter (≥ 19-h) periods compared with the normal (21.5-h) period. Others showed little or no change in period. Those mutant strains exhibiting shorter periods also contained ≥60% more mitochondrial protein per gram total protein in extracts compared with the normal strains. Assays of the level of a mitochondrial-specific protein, acyl carrier protein, showed that the cellular content of this protein was approximately doubled. A parallel set of studies on the effects of antimycin or chloramphenicol on Neurospora demonstrated that these inhibitors also produced shorter periods as well as increased amounts of mitochondrial proteins. These two new lines of evidence may be interpreted to indicate that in Neurospora either some part of the oscillator is localized to the mitochondria and/or that mitochondria exert their effect on the clock mechanism through their effects on biosynthetic pathways or by their contribution in determining ion gradients.  相似文献

The 24-hr patterns of plasma thyrotropin have been observed in 12 endogenous depressed patients in both depressed and recovered states and in 13 normal subjects. A clear circadian rhythm was detected in controls with high values at night. In depression, the circadian rhythm was altered with amplitude reduction and blunted nocturnal secretion, abnormalities particularly relevant in bipolar patients. This flattened profile could be linked to the blunted response of TSH to TRH administration reported in depressed patients. Normal nyctohemeral patterns have been restored after recovery. These chronobiological abnormalities as well as their normalization under antidepressant drugs seem to be similar to those reported for various parameters (e.g. temperature, Cortisol, etc) in depression which could support the chronobiological hypothesis for affective disorders.  相似文献

Continuous depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer has resulted in an increase in solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B; 280–315 nm) radiation reaching the Earth's surface. The consequences for aquatic phototrophic organisms of this small change in the solar spectrum are currently uncertain. UV radiation has been shown to adversely affect a number of photochemical and photobiological processes in a wide variety of aquatic organisms, such as cyanobacteria, phytoplankton and macroalgae. However, a number of photosynthetic organisms counteract the damaging effects of UV-B by synthesizing UV protective compounds such as mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and the cyanobacterial sheath pigment, scytonemin. The aim of this contribution is to discuss the responses of algae and cyanobacteria to solar UV-B radiation and the role of photoprotective compounds in mitigating UV-B damage.  相似文献

The presence of time-dependent variations in the in vitro sensitivity of aorta preparations to either vasoconstricting or relaxing agents was investigated in rats maintained in light from 08: 00 to 20: 00 and in darkness from 20: 00 to 08: 00. Rat thoracic aorta rings were obtained from animals sacrificed at four different times of the day. The rat aorta was found to be more sensitive to the constricting effect of phenylephrine at 15: 00, and of 5-hydroxytryptamine at 21: 00. On the other hand, both endothelium-dependent and -independent relaxations were more remarkable at 03: 00 than at other times of the day. These variations represented significant circadian rhythms when analyzed by analysis of variance. Different in vitro responsiveness to these agents might reflect changes in the sensitivity and/or number of related receptors in vascular preparations. In conclusion, the circadian time of animal sacrifice to obtain vascular preparations constitutes an important aspect of the research method and a key determinant of findings. 目的:研究生理节律和日常活动分别对人体疲劳程度的影响大小。方法:选取某校7名大学生志愿者,在军训期间对每日军训科目严格限制条件下进行该实验,以闪光临界融合频率、心率变异性、反应时、静态姿势图TLX-NASA量表评分作为指标,对每天分别在训练前和训练后疲劳程度的大小进行测量,以这些指标描述训练前后的疲劳程度。结果:反应时降低(0.60±0.09)、反应正确率提高(0.97±0.03);闪光临界光融合频率升高(40.84±2.14);心率变异性TP(3076.60±382.08)降低、心率变异性SDNN(55.28±16.85)降低;静态姿势图晃动减少,中低频率段(0.15±0.01)、前后方向重心变位(7.92±0.63),TLX-NASA量表评分降低(30.47±10.23)。以上差异均具有统计学意义(P<0.05)。结论:生理节律相对于日常活动对机体的疲劳状态有更大的影响。  相似文献

Understanding pathogen infectivity and virulence requires combining insights from epidemiology, ecology, evolution and genetics. Although theoretical work in these fields has identified population structure as important for pathogen life-history evolution, experimental tests are scarce. Here, we explore the impact of population structure on life-history evolution in phage T4, a viral pathogen of Escherichia coli. The host–pathogen system is propagated as a metapopulation in which migration between subpopulations is either spatially restricted or unrestricted. Restricted migration favours pathogens with low infectivity and low virulence. Unrestricted migration favours pathogens that enter and exit their hosts quickly, although they are less productive owing to rapid extirpation of the host population. The rise of such ‘rapacious’ phage produces a ‘tragedy of the commons’, in which better competitors lower productivity. We have now identified a genetic basis for a rapacious life history. Mutations at a single locus (rI) cause increased virulence and are sufficient to account for a negative relationship between phage competitive ability and productivity. A higher frequency of rI mutants under unrestricted migration signifies the evolution of rapaciousness in this treatment. Conversely, spatially restricted migration favours a more ‘prudent’ pathogen strategy, in which the tragedy of the commons is averted. As our results illustrate, profound epidemiological and ecological consequences of life-history evolution in a pathogen can have a simple genetic cause.  相似文献

The free-running period is regarded to be an exclusive feature of the endogenous circadian clock. Changes during aging in the free-running period may therefore reflect age-related changes in the internal organization of this clock. However, the literature on alterations in the free-running period in aging is not unequivocal. In the present study, with various confounding factors kept to a minimum, it was found that the free-running periods for active wakefulness, body temperature, and drinking behavior were significantly shorter (by 12-17 min) in old than in young rats. In addition, it was found that the day-to-day stability of the different sleep states was reduced in old rats, whereas that of the drinking rhythm was enhanced. Transient cycles were not observed, nor were there any age-related differences in daily totals of the various sleep-wake states. The amplitudes of the circadian rhythms of active wakefulness, quiet sleep, and temperature were reduced, whereas those of paradoxical sleep and quiet wakefulness remained unchanged.  相似文献
