Sub-Antarctic Marion Island has had a permanent research station for 50 years and the islands Wandering Albatrosses have been intensively studied for 20 years. The reactions of breeding birds to approaches by a human on foot were recorded. Three response variables were calculated: intensity of vocal reaction (IVR), intensity of non-vocal reaction (INR) and overall response index (ORI). At 5 m from the nest, twice as many birds stood and/or vocalised as at 15 m. Nearest neighbour distance, age and gender did not explain individual variability of responses. Study colony birds had higher IVR scores than non-study colony birds; birds at colonies closest to the station had the highest ORI scores. A better breeding record was associated with lower IVR and ORI scores, but a causative relationship remains to be demonstrated. A minimum viewing distance of 25 m is recommended for breeding Wandering Albatrosses.

We present a decentralized algorithm for online clustering analysis used for anomaly detection in self-monitoring distributed
systems. In particular, we demonstrate the monitoring of a network of printing devices that can perform the analysis without
the use of external computing resources (i.e. in-network analysis). We also show how to ensure the robustness of the algorithm,
in terms of anomaly detection accuracy, in the face of failures of the network infrastructure on which the algorithm runs.
Further, we evaluate the tradeoff in terms of overhead necessary for ensuring this robustness and present a method to reduce
this overhead while maintaining the detection accuracy of the algorithm.

The established definition of replication in terms of the conditions of causality, similarity and information transfer is
very broad. We draw inspiration from the literature on self-reproducing automata to strengthen the notion of information transfer
in replication processes. To the triple conditions of causality, similarity and information transfer, we add a fourth condition
that defines a “generative replicator” as a conditional generative mechanism, which can turn input signals from an environment into developmental instructions. Generative replication must have the potential to enhance complexity, which in turn requires that developmental instructions are part
of the information that is transmitted in replication. Demonstrating the usefulness of the generative replicator concept in
the social domain, we identify social generative replicators that satisfy all of the four proposed conditions.

This review on chlorophyll a fluorescence starts with an overview of the primary photochemistry occurring at PSII and a characterization of the so-called
“open” and “closed” states of its reaction centers. This provides the theoretical background for understanding the origin
of PSII-emitted fluorescence and how its yield varies with the fraction of open reaction centers. The review proceeds to discuss
the changes in fluorescence emission following illumination of a dark-adapted leaf and to define the PSII intrinsic quantum
yield of photochemistry, which in turn provides an indication of PSII capacity. In light-adapted leaves, it is discussed how
the use of modulated fluorometers and the double lighting technique allow an evaluation of photochemical and non-photochemical
quenching, two parameters that give useful information about the plant’s photosynthetic performance under field conditions.
Finally, it is described how the PSII operational efficiency can be used to calculate the photosynthetic electron transport
rate and the conditions under which this is linearly related to the CO2 assimilation rate. Some requirements for a valid application of the technique as well as some limitations in interpreting
its results are discussed.

The purpose of autonomic networking is to manage the business and technical complexity of networked components and systems.
However, the lack of a common lingua franca makes it impossible to use vendor-specific network management data to ascertain the state of the network at any given time.
Furthermore, the tools used to analyze management data are all different, and hence require different data in different formats.
This complicates the construction of context from diverse information sources. This paper describes a new version of the DEN-ng
context-aware policy model, which is part of the FOCALE autonomic network architecture. This model has been built using three
guiding principles: (1) both the context model and the policy model are rooted in information models, so that they can govern
managed entities, (2) each model is expressly constructed to facilitate the generation of ontologies, so that reasoning about
policies constructed from the model may be done, and (3) the model is expressly constructed so that a policy language that
supports machine-based reasoning and learning can be developed from it.

Abstraction is seen as an active process which both enlightens and obscures. Abstractions are not true or false but relatively
enlightening or obscuring according to the problem under study; different abstractions may grasp different aspects of a problem.
Abstractions may be useless if they can answer questions only about themselves. A theoretical enterprise explores reality
through acluster of abstractions that use different perspectives, temporal and horizontal scales, and assumes different givens.

This paper is intended to complement our previous works on the necessary existence of error-correcting codes endowing genomes
with the ability of being regenerated, not merely copied. It sketchily recalls some fundamental definitions and results of
information theory and error-correcting codes; provides an overview of our research; shows that the disjunction of replication
and regeneration enlightens the divide between germinal and somatic cells; suggests that some phenomena referred to as epigenetic
may possibly find an explanation within the framework of error-correcting codes; points out some difficulties, especially
those related to sexual reproduction; criticizes the template-replication paradigm, and prompts geneticists to become familiar
with information theory.

Sustainability is said to be the science of integration, be it integration of scale, discipline or of stakeholders’ interests.
One way to integrate such diverse elements is to develop sustainable development indicators. Numerous national and international
organizations have attempted to develop such indicators, among which interaction indicators are of critical importance because
they enable us to link up human activities, ecological dynamics, and social goals. Among the various ways to develop such
indicators, the most common ones are the pressure–state–response (PSR) indicators, as well as others coming from this framework.
With realistic methodology one shall observe how PSR indicators might appear as an operational tool to face rapid social and
ecological changes within a French biosphere reserve in Brittany. Results suggest that such a framework is insufficient to
describe, understand and manage social and ecological interactions.

I show that gene regulation networks are qualitatively consistent and therefore sufficiently similar to linearly seperable
connectionist networks to warrant that the connectionist framework be applied to gene regulation. On this view, natural selection
designs gene regulation networks to overcome the difficulty of development. I offer some general lessons about their evolvability
that can be learned by examining the generic features of connectionist networks.

This paper investigates the scheduling of mixed-parallel applications, which exhibit both task and data parallelism, in advance
reservations settings. Both the problem of minimizing application turn-around time and that of meeting a deadline are studied.
For each several scheduling algorithms are proposed, some of which borrow ideas from previously published work in non-reservation
settings. Algorithms are compared in simulation over a wide range of application and reservation scenarios. The main finding
is that schedules computed using the previously published CPA algorithm can be adapted to advance reservation settings, notably
resulting in low resource consumption and thus high efficiency.

A key point in the analysis of dynamical models of biological systems is to handle systems of relatively high dimensions.
In the present paper we propose a method to hierarchically organize a certain type of piecewise affine (PWA) differential
systems. This specific class of systems has been extensively studied for the past few years, as it provides a good framework
to model gene regulatory networks. The method, shown on several examples, allows a qualitative analysis of the asymptotic
behavior of a PWA system, decomposing it into several smaller subsystems. This technique, based on the well-known strongly
connected components decomposition, is not new. However, its adaptation to the non-smooth PWA differential equations turns
out to be quite relevant because of the strong discrete structure underlying these equations. Its biological relevance is
shown on a 7-dimensional PWA system modeling the gene network responsible for the carbon starvation response in Escherichia coli.

An interferometer that measures the refractive index changes due to bacterial metabolism is described. The apparatus permits
simultaneous and real time measurement of bacterial growth in several samples of slowly growing mycobacteria. The error sources
are discussed and the sensitivity of the apparatus is tested. For the species Mycobacterium bovis BCG and M. smegmatis, a relation between refractive index change and bacterial concentration is determined experimentally and the time constant
of bacterial growth is measured.

The competitiveness of online algorithms is measured based on the correctness of the results produced and processing time
efficiency. Traditionally evolutionary algorithms are not favored in online paradigms because of the large number of iterations
involved in the algorithm which translates directly into processing time overhead. In this paper we describe MARS (Management
Architecture for Resource Services) online scheduling algorithm which uses Simulated Annealing and concepts from Tabu Search
to drastically decrease the processing time of the algorithm. The paper outlines the concepts behind MARS, the components
involved and scheduling methodology used. In addition we also identify the time consuming bottlenecks in the performance of
the system and how evolutionary algorithms help us soar past them.

This paper demonstrates that the human visual system, the primary sensory conduit for primates, processes ambient energy in
a way that obligatorily constructs the objects that we ineluctably perceive. And since our perceptual apparatus processes
information only in terms of objects (along with the properties and movements of objects), we are limited in our ability to comprehend ‘what
is’ when we move beyond our ordinary world of midsize objects—as, for example, when we address the micro microworld of quantum
physics.
