Mulberry longicorn beetle, Apriona germari, was reared on an artificial diet to investigate its life cycle. Average egg period was 17.95 days. Most larvae pupated at the 8th (33.3%) or 9th (33.3%) instars, but others emerged from the 7th to the 11th instars. The total duration of larval stage from the 1st to the end of the 9th and the 11th instars were 176.2 and 251.5 days, respectively. For terminatiopn of diapause and acceleration of pupation, low temperature treatment at 5°C for 60 days was highly effective. Average pupal period for female and male was 19.3 and 18.4 days, respectively. Average longevity of adults was similar with 40.5 days for female and 44.3 days for male. Mating had occurred from about 10 days after the adult emergence, and then a female adult laid one or two eggs per day. Average number of eggs oviposited by a female was approximately 47.7. Total life span of A. germari, when reared on an artificial diet in the laboratory, ranged broadly from 197.5 days to 331.5 days mainly depending on the larval period.  相似文献

A strain of the marine rotifer Synchaeta cecilia valentina,n. subsp., isolated from the Hondo of Elche Spanish Mediterraneancoastal lagoon at 22 salinity, was cultured in the laboratoryin 20 ml test tubes and fed with the alga Tetrasemis suecica. The effect of two temperatures (20 and 24°C), four salinities(20,25,30 and 37) and two food levels (15 000 and 25000 cellsml–1) on the life history traits of this rotifer werestudied in life tables performed with replicated individualcultures. Temperature and salinity had a significant negativeeffect (P < 0.001) on the average lifespan (LS) and on thenumber of offspring per female (R0) The effect of food levelon LS is unclear, whereas R0 is greater at 20°C with thelower concentration of algae and at 24°C with the higheralgal concentration. The maximum values of LS and R0, 5.6 daysand 9.2 offspring per female, respectively, were recorded at20°C, 25o salinity and low food concentration. There isalso a clear negative effect on the intrinsic growth rate (r)due to salinity. The effect of temperature depends on the foodlevel and, as occurs with R0 the maximum values of r occur withthe lower algal concentration at 20°C, whereas at 24°Cthey are obtained with the higher algal concentration. Theser values, from 1.04 to 1.10 day–1, were reached at 24°C,salinities of 20–25 and with high food concentration.  相似文献

The rates of egg production of individually reared females ofCentropager typicus have been observed from the moulting C5-adultto death under constant conditions of food (10 000 cells ml–1of Hymenomonas elongara) and temperature (15 and 20°C).Preliminaiy experiments showed that virgin females could produceunfecunded eggs, but that the distinctive spines of the eggsof C.typicus were only obtained after fecundation occurred.High and continuous egg production needs several matings, andthe following experiments were run with a couple. In all experiments, both males and females fed and produced faecal pellets. Thefemales show a high variability in spawning life periods, inspawning rhythms, in daily rates and, consequently, in cumulatednumbers of eggs spawned during their life. The highest dailyrates of egg production were obtained in the first half of thefemale's life, and were as high at 20°C as at 15°C.Nevertheless, the females survived longer at 15°C than at20°C, and finally produced 47.6% more eggs during theirwhole life at 15°C than at 20°C, which can be partiallydue to the difference in size (almost 10% bigger at 15°Cthan at 20°C). The production of faecal pellets occurredduring the whole of life and was more regular than egg production, with a maximum daily rate in the first part of life, and showeda decrease until death. The decline in daily egg productionwith age was parallel to the decrease in daily faecal pelletproduction. The daily production of faecal pellets was higherat 15°C than at 20°C. At 20°C, a good correlationwas observed between the total egg production per female andthe total faecal pellet production per female. The individual-basedegg production rates of our experiments have been compared withrates obtained in different conditions by several authors, andwere lower than in other published studies, probably due tothe food offered. We emphasize the difficulties of comparingresults which have been obtained for the entire life of thefemales with those based on daily egg production. The totalegg production of a female is an important parameter in regardto the population d because it fixes the maximal rate of losses(mortality plus dispersion) for which a population can continueto develop.  相似文献

Tomato seeds with a moisture content of 16.4% were stored hermeticallyat one of five constant temperatures (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 °C)or in one of nine alternating temperature (24 h/24 h) regimes(10/30, 10/40, 10/50, 20/30, 20/40, 20/50, 30/40, 30/50, 40/50°C) for up to 224 d. In each regime, seed survival conformedto cumulative negative normal distributions and all 14 survivalcurves could be constrained to a common origin. Estimates ofthe constants CHand CQof the viability equation determined atconstant temperatures were 0.0346 (s.e. 0.0058) and 0.000401(s.e. 0.000096), respectively. The effective temperature forseed survival of each alternating temperature regime was alwaysmuch higher than the mean. Tomato seeds were also stored hermeticallyat 15.9% moisture content at 40 °C for 0, 7, 14, 21 or 28d before transfer to 50 °C. This investigation showed thatthe standard deviation of the subsequent survival curves at50 °C was unaffected by the duration of previous storageat 40 °C. The results of both investigations were consistentwith the hypothesis that loss in probit viability is solelya function of the current storage environment, with no effectof change in temperature per se. The application of the viabilityequation to seed survival in fluctuating environments was validatedagainst independent observations for rice in uncontrolled storageconditions. Centropages abdominalis is a neritic, omnivorous, temporallyabundant copepod present throughout the subarctic Pacific andits marginal seas. The two main objectives of this study wereto determine how temperature influences the development of C.abdominalis and whether growth rates of in situ populationsmay be limited by available food. At 6.9°C, median developmenttime from eggs laid to 50% adults was 42 days and the averageweight-specific somatic growth rate was 0.17 day–1. At4.6°C, median development time to adult was 59 days (projected)and growth rate averaged 0.08 day–1, suggesting that 4.6°Cmay be approaching the lower temperature for development andgrowth in this species. The functional relationship betweendevelopment time and temperature was established over the temperaturerange in which this species occurs. The in situ adult growthrates between 10 and 13°C averaged 0.14 day–1 andwere generally lower than the laboratory-reared juvenile growthrates, which may indicate that adult C. abdominalis are foodlimited in the field during summer and autumn.  相似文献

To control coconut leaf beetle, Brontispa longissima (Gestro), the pupal parasitoid Tetrastichus brontispae Ferrière was imported from Taiwan and its biology was studied in quarantine in Hainan, China. The parasitoid development includes an egg, three larval instars and three pupal stages. Its developmental time from egg to adult was 19.5±0.5 days under conditions of 24±2°C and 75±5% relative humidity (RH). Temperature had no effect on the sex ratio of offspring, but significantly affected the parasitism rate and reproduction. The parasitism rates were 98.07, 97.97 and 95.03% at 28, 24 and 20°C, respectively, whereas the parasitism rate was 52.18% at 18°C and 69.48% at 30°C, respectively. Furthermore, the parasitoids reared at 18 and 30°C produced fewer offspring than those at 20, 24 and 28°C, respectively. With the increase in temperature, developmental time decreased linearly from 46.19 days at 18°C to 17.10 days at 28°C. RH significantly influenced development, parasitism rate and the reproduction of T. brontispa. With the decrease of RH, developmental time increased from 22.94 days at 20% RH to 18.84 days at 95% RH. In contrast, parasitism rate and the number of offspring per female increased with the increase of RH. Though emergence rates between 50 and 95% RH were much higher than those between 20 and 35% RH, the sex ratios between 20 and 95% RH were not different. Photoperiod had no effect on parasitism, the number of offspring per female, emergence and the sex ratio of T. brontispae, but developmental time was significantly different for different photoperiods. Sucrose, honey and glucose significantly enhanced adult longevity, parasitism and the number of offspring per female of T. brontispae, but had no effect on the sex ratio and survival. Females of T. brontispae only parasitized fourth to fifth larval instars and 1–5-day-old pupae, but there was a significant difference in the number of offspring per female, development time, emergence and the sex ratio of offspring in different instars. These results showed that 1-day-old pupae, a temperature of 24–28°C and 65–95% RH were optimal for T. brontispae. These findings should be helpful in developing a production system to rear and release T. brontispae in large enough quantities to effectively control coconut leaf beetle.  相似文献

The effects of light and temperature on flowering and pollentube growth were studied in watermelon [Citrullus lanatus(Thunb.)Matsum. and Nakai, cv. Early Yates] plants grown in controlledenvironment cabinets. All female flowers were pollinated inone group of plants; none was pollinated in the other group. Temperature increase from 25 °C to 35 °C with daylengthof 14 h and light intensity of 32 klx caused increase in flowernumber per plant, proportion of male flowers, ovary length anddiameter, ovule number per ovary, rate of pollen tube growthand percentage of penetrated ovules at 24 hand 48 h after pollination.Very few flowers were produced at 40 °C, but there was ahigh proportion of male flowers. Increase in daylength from14 h to 24 h at 25 °C with light intensity of 32 klx alsoincreased number of flowers per plant, ovary length and diameterand number of ovules per ovary but sex expression and rate ofpollen tube growth were unaffected. Reduction in daylength from14 h to 8 hat 25 °C and light intensity of 32 klx and reductionin light intensity from 32 klx to 8 klx at 25 °C and 14h daylength both produced an increase in the percentage of immatureovules. The presence of fruit on the vine resulted in fewerflowers per plant and in reduced ovary legnth and diameter underall conditions tested. The results are discussed in relation to the fruiting responseof the plant.  相似文献

Adult longevity, developmental time and juvenile mortality ofEncarsia formosa Gahan (Hymenoptera:Aphelinidae) parasitizing the Poinsettia-strain ofBemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) on Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd.) were investigated in laboratory experiments at three temperatures: 16 °C, 22 °C and 28 °C. Furthermore, the parasitoid's preference for different larval stages of the whitefly was determined at 24.5 °C. The lifespan ofE. formosa decreased with temperature from one month at 16 °C to nine days at 28 °C. A lower temperature threshold of 11 °C for adult development was found. The development of juvenile parasitoids inB. tabaci lasted more than two months at the lowest temperature, but was only 14 days when temperature was 28 °C. The lower temperature threshold for immature development was 13.3 °C, yielding an average of 207 day-degrees for the completion of development into adults. Juvenile mortality was high, varying from about 50% at 16 °C to about 30% at 22 °C and 28 °C.E. formosa preferred to oviposit in the 4th instar and prepupal stages ofB. tabaci followed by the 2nd and 3rd instars. The preference for the pupal stage was low. The parasitoid used all instars of the whitefly for hostfeeding, with no apparent differences between the stages. The average duration of the oviposition posture was four minutes. Demographic parameters were calculated from life tables constructed from the data. The intrinsic rate of increase (r m) and the net reproductive rate (R 0) increased with temperature from 0.0279 day−1 at 16 °C to 0.2388 day−1 at 28 °C and from about 12 at 16 °C to about 66 at 28 °C, respectively.  相似文献

The development, survivorship, longevity, reproduction, and life table parameters of the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama were evaluated at 10°C, 15°C, 20°C, 25°C, 28°C, 30°C and 33°C. The populations reared at 10°C and 33°C failed to develop. Between 15°C and 30°C, mean developmental period from egg to adult varied from 49.3 days at 15°C to 14.1 days at 28°C. The low‐temperature developmental thresholds for 1st through 5th instars were estimated at 11.7°C, 10.7°C, 10.1°C, 10.5°C and 10.9°C, respectively. A modified Logan model was used to describe the relationship between developmental rate and temperature. The survival of the 3rd through 5th nymphal instars at 15–28°C was essentially the same. The mean longevity of females increased with decreasing temperature within 15–30°C. The maximal longevity of individual females was recorded 117, 60, 56, 52 and 51 days at 15°C, 20°C, 25°C, 28°C and 30°C, respectively. The average number of eggs produced per female significantly increased with increasing temperature and reached a maximum of 748.3 eggs at 28°C (P<0.001). The population reared at 28°C had the highest intrinsic rate of increased (0.199) and net reproductive rate (292.2); and the shortest population doubling time (3.5 days) and mean generation time (28.6 days) compared with populations reared at 15–25°C. The optimum range of temperatures for D. citri population growth was 25–28°C.  相似文献

Geographic variation in size of male and female snow crabs (Chionoecetes opilio) was investigated along the west coast of Greenland to test the hypothesis that size at terminal molt (=adulthood) is temperature dependent. A total of 81,490 snow crabs were collected in small-mesh traps in Disko Bay (68–69°N) and six sites near Sisimiut (66–67°N) in May and June from 2000 to 2005. Average bottom temperature over the study period ranged from −0.8 to 3.2°C across the sampling sites. Mean carapace width was positively correlated with temperature in both sexes, a pattern often described as a converse Jame’s cline. We infer that temperature per se is the causative factor and discount season length, food availability or density as ultimate causes of the cline. Temperature effects on body size of crabs apparently result from a change in the number of instars before terminal molt. This interpretation is supported by size frequency analysis showing that in general crabs were larger at instar in a colder than in a warmer site. We briefly discuss the implications of our findings for population reproductive potential and the effectiveness of a fixed legal size limit in protecting some adult males from exploitation at different temperature regimes.  相似文献

Seeds of two lettuce cultivars (Lactuca sativa L., cv. Meikoninginand cv. Grand Rapids) were hermetically stored with constantmoisture contents ranging between 3.6 and 17.9 per cent (freshweight basis) at constant temperatures ranging between 5 and75 °C. The decline with time in percentage germination andpercentage normal seedlings was determined for each storagetreatment. The data were fitted to an equation which containsthe constants: K1, the probit of the initial percentage germinationor normal seedlings; KE, a species constant; CW, the constantof a logarithmic moisture term; CH, the constant of a lineartemperature term and CQ, the constant of a quadratic temperatureterm. Regression analysis of data from storage periods up to5.5 years at temperatures of 5–75 °C and seed moisturecontents of 3.6–13.6 per cent yielded the following values:KE= 8.218, CW=4.797±0.163, CH=0.0489±0.0050 andCQ=0.000365±0.000056. Although this equation consistentlyprovided a better fit, simplified equations, assuming eithera log-linear relationship between seed longevity and temperature,or a log-linear relationship between seed longevity and bothmoisture content and temperature, accounted for more than 94per cent of the variation at the restricted temperature rangeof 5–40 °C. Longevity of the same seed lots at sub-zero temperatures (–5,–10 and –20 °C) was studied in separate tests.Freezing damage, resulting in abnormal seedlings in the germinationtest, occurred at –20 °C when the moisture contentof the seeds exceeded 12 per cent. No decline in percentagenormal seedlings was observed after a storage period of 18 monthsor longer at –20 °C, provided the seed moisture contentdid not exceed 9.5 per cent. For seeds stored at –5 and–10 °C with 9.6–12.5 per cent moisture content, the observed rate of decline of percentage normal seedlingswas adequately predicted by the viability equation, using theabove values for the constants. This suggests that for low moisturecontents the viability equation can be applied to estimate longevityat sub-zero temperatures. The Dry Storage of Citrus Seeds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The survival of seeds of lemon (Citrus limon L.), lime [C. arantifolia(Christm.) Swing.] and sour orange (C. aurantium L.) was examinedunder a wide range of constant moisture contents and temperatures.Seed longevity was increased by decreasing the moisture contentand temperature of the storage environment. Maximum viabilitywas maintained in the combination of storage conditions includingthe lowest moisture content (5 per cent) and lowest temperature(–20 °C) investigated. The practicality of dry storageof citrus seed for genetic conservation is discussed. Growth (assessed from intermolt period and molt increment) andmetabolism (oxygen consumption) of juvenile and adult Thysanoessalongipes from central Japan Sea were determined at eight differenttemperatures ranging from 0 to 14°C. The intermolt periodshortened progressively as temperature increased from 0 to 14°C.The molt increment was not assessed satisfactorily in the rearingexperiments, and therefore this was estimated from the naturalgrowth curve and habitat temperature, combined with laboratory-obtainedintermolt data. Oxygen consumption rates increased exponentiallyfrom 0 to 8°C and then leveled off. From these results, the growth was expressed as a function of temperature and bodysize and metabolism as a function of temperature. Because ofthe differential effects of temperature on growth and metabolism, the net growth efficiency [NGE: 100 x growth/(growth + metabolism)]changed with temperature. The temperature at which T. longipesattained maximum NGE varied from 0 to 8°C, depending onthe body length of specimens of 5, 10, 15 and 20 mm. The presentresults are compared with our previous data on Euphausia pacificain relation to the body composition and habitat usage of thesetwo trophically important species in the food web of the JapanSea.  相似文献

The incubation period of eggs, duration of three nymphal instars, adult longevity and the daily egg-deposition rate of the ischnoceran Phthiraptera, Brueelia amandavae, were determined by rearing the louse in vitro (35 ± 1°C, 75–82% RH, feather diet). The data obtained were utilized for life table construction and determination of the intrinsic rate of natural increase (0.031 per day) and the doubling time (23.45 days) of the louse population. The doubling time of the louse in in vivo experiments was 21.5 days.  相似文献

Intact seeds of P. sativum and P. elatius leaked electrolytes, sugars and proteins for as long as 48 h after the beginningof imbibition. Initial leakage was higher at 25 °C thanat 5 °C, but its extent was much greater at the lower temperature.Transfer of seed from 5 °C to 25 °C after 5 h imbibitionresulted in leakage for 48 h at the initial rate at 5 °C.The transfer from 25 °C to 5 °C gave leakage at a rateequivalent to the initial rate at 25 °C. The results arediscussed in relation to behaviour of membranes and to the sensingof the initial temperature. The planktonic shrimp, Lucifer faxoni, lives to an age of 30–40days off the Texas coast. In the laboratory, the shrimp took28.9 and 18.9 days to reach sexual maturity at 22 and 30°Crespectively. Oviposition was observed at night between 20.00and 23.00. Females attach eggs to the 3rd pereiopods and broodthem until the nauplii emerge. Multiple broods are produced, giving a maximal lifetime fecundity of >140 eggs per female. In addition, females may also be able to synchronize the timeof their hatching to occur at night, perhaps to further reducemortality due to predation and cannibalism. A rapid turnoverof generations, each with a short adult lifespan, sequentialspawnings, and protection of eggs until hatching, characterizesthe life strategy of this small shrimp. Adult L.faxoni are carnivorous. However, their feeding appendages do not exclude the possibilityof omnivory. The maximal, dry-weight-based, specific ingestionrate was 0.7 day–1. Feeding activity was not affectedby either time of day or light regime.  相似文献

Temperature Response of Vernalization in Wheat: A Developmental Analysis   总被引:4,自引:2,他引:2
BROOKING  IAN R. 《Annals of botany》1996,78(4):507-512
The vernalization response of wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.)was reinterpreted from a developmental perspective, using currentconcepts of the developmental regulation of wheat morphologyand phenology. At temperatures above 0 °C, the effects ofthe process of vernalization per se in wheat are confoundedby the effects of concurrent vegetative development. These effectsare manifested by differences in the number of leaves initiatedby the shoot apex prior to floral initiation, which in turnaffects the subsequent rate of development to ear emergenceand anthesis. Leaf primordia development during vernalizationand total leaf number at flowering were used to develop criteriato define both the progress and the point of saturation of thevernalization response. These criteria were then used to reinterpretthe results of Chujo ( Proceedings of the Crop Science Societyof Japan 35 : 177–186, 1966), and derive the temperatureresponse of vernalization per se for plants grown under saturatinglong day conditions. The rate of vernalization increased linearlywith temperature between 1 and 11 °C, such that the timetaken to saturate the vernalization response decreased from70 d at 1 °C to 40 d at 11 °C. The rate declined againat temperatures above 11 °C, and 18 °C was apparentlyineffective for vernalization. Total leaf number at saturation, however, increased consistently with temperature, as a resultof the balance between the concurrent processes of leaf primordiuminitiation and vernalization. Total leaf number at saturationincreased from 6 at 1 °C to 13.3 at 15 °C, which inturn influenced the time taken to reach ear emergence. The advantagesof using this developmental interpretation of vernalizationas the basis for a mechanistic model of the vernalization responsein wheat are discussed. Larvae of Mithrax caribbaeus were reared in the laboratoryin a factorial experiment employing three temperatures (22,25 and 28°C) and three salinities (32, 35 and 38). Survivaland duration of larval stages were recorded. Ovigerous femalesof M.caribbaeus were collected from the south-eastern coastof Margarita Island, Venezuela, and maintained in individualaquaria until hatching. Eggs from three of the females hatchedin the laboratory. Larvae from each hatching were subdividedinto groups of 10 and reared in plastic bowls containing 200ml filtered and UV-irradiated sea water at different temperature–salinitycombinations. Larvae were transferred daily to clean bowls withnewly hatched Artemia nauplii, and the number of molts and mortalitywithin each bowl was recorded. Complete larval development ofM.caribbaeus occurred under all experimental conditions. Salinityhad the greatest effect on percentage survival of each larvalstage and complete development up to the first crab stage. Thefirst zoeal stage exhibited the highest survival rate. Maximumsurvival for this stage occurred at 25°C, 32–35. Survivalin the second zoeal stage and the megalopa was affected onlyby salinity. Effects of temperature and salinity on survivaldecreased with advance in development. The duration of the twozoeal stages, the megalopa, and development to the first crabstage showed a gradual reduction with increasing temperature.Salinity showed an effect on the duration of zoeal stages butnot on the megalopal stage. Development from hatching to thefirst crab stage required 8–18 days, depending on thetemperature–salinity combination, and was inversely relatedto temperature, averaging 14.3 days at 22°C, 11.8 days at25°C and 9.2 days at 28°C.  相似文献

Improved Equations for the Prediction of Seed Longevity   总被引:23,自引:1,他引:22
Equations for predicting seed longevity in storage have beenimproved so that they now take into account variations withina species in initial seed quality—which is affected bygenotype and pre-storage environment—and so that theyare more accurate over a wider range of storage environmentsThese improvements have been incorporated into a seed viabilitynomograph for barley (Hordeum distichum L.) which may be usedto predict percentage viabihty of any seed lot after any timein any storage environment within the range –20 to 90°C and 5–25 per cent moisture content. Applicationsof the improved equations to seed drying and to long-term seedstorage for genetic conservation are discussed.
