The present study focuses on the spatial and temporal distribution of the macroinvertebrate community of the salt marsh areas of the Tejo estuary, based on surveys conducted from autumn 1998 to summer 2000. Samples were collected quarterly in five different intertidal areas along an elevation gradient in: mudflats, creek mouths, creeks, pioneer salt marsh areas and middle marsh areas. A total of 36 benthic invertebrate taxa were identified. Insect larvae were the most well represented group, with 10 taxa identified. Oligochaetes and ostracods were the most numerically abundant taxa, whereas bivalves dominated in biomass. Benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages were dominated, both in number and biomass, by deposit feeders. Three distinct macroinvertebrate assemblages were distinguished along the elevation gradient, based on species presence, density and biomass: the unvegetated muddy areas with a macrobenthic assemblage composed mostly by infauna; the salt marsh pioneer areas of Spartina maritima in which several epibenthic taxa were found, as well as endobenthic taxa characteristic of muddy sediment; and the creek margins, with epifauna taxa such as insect larvae and crustaceans and a low abundance of benthic infauna. Total biomass in the unvegetated and Spartina areas was higher during spring and summer mainly due to the increase in biomass of Scrobicularia plana and Hydrobia ulvae. No decreases in the salt marsh macroinvertebrate biomass values were observed during the highest densities of their potential nektonic predators (summer). This fact might indicate that macroinvertebrates are not a limiting resource for the nektonic species, and that the natural biomass increment of these invertebrate species could be masking the predation/disturbance caused by the nektonic species.  相似文献

The densities of two benthic fishes, the Siberian stone loach (Noemacheilus barbatulus) and the wrinklehead sculpin (Cottus nozawae), and the biomass of their food resources (i.e., periphyton and benthic invertebrates) were compared between forest and grassland streams in northern Hokkaido, Japan, to examine whether riparian deforestation had positive effects on the benthic fishes via enhancement of food availability. The comparisons indicated that riparian vegetation had little influence on periphyton, invertebrates, or fishes. Regression analysis indicated that spatial variations in loach and sculpin densities were explained more by substrate heterogeneity, competitor abundance, or both, rather than by food abundance. However, when the two species were combined as benthic insectivores, a strong correlation was found between total benthic fish density and invertebrate biomass. Our results suggest that, although total benthic fish abundance was food limited, riparian vegetation had no positive effects via food availability on the benthic fishes in our streams.  相似文献

Summary Seasonal and spatial patterns of benthic invertebrate abundance were examined in relation to benthic detritus in Monument Creek, an Alaskan subarctic stream. The total macroinvertebrate fauna showed a mid-summer low in abundance, increasing to seasonal highs in winter/early spring (November/May). Shredders were a small portion of the benthic fauna or leaf pack fauna in summer but increased rapidly (in biovolume) following autumnal leaf fall to dominate the fauna by early winter (October/November). Abundance was strongly correlated with quantity of detritus in the sample. Comparison of benthic macroinvertebrate densities from Alaskan streams with comparable data from temperate zone streams shows that Alaskan streams are similar to temperate zone streams in range of abundance. Each unit of benthic detritus in Monument Creek is associated with a relatively large number of small (low individual biomass) shredders compared to streams in temperate regions. Detrital resources in this subarctic stream were meager, compared to temperate streams, and appeared to strongly influence the spatial and temporal patterns of detritivores.  相似文献

1. Small cages (294cm2) containing unglazed clay quarry tiles were used to investigate the influence of periphytic algae on macroinvertebrate abundance in a Hong Kong stream. Algal biomass was manipulated by shading cages with plastic sheets. Individual cages were assigned to one of three treatment groups: unshaded, shaded and deeply shaded. Invertebrate densities and algal biomass within cages were monitored after 23, 37 and 65 days. 2. Multiple-regression analysis revealed that algal biomass, invertebrate morphospecies richness and total abundance declined with greater shading intensity. The responses of individual invertebrate taxa varied: some (especially Trichoptera) were unaffected by shading, whereas grazers (Baetidae, Psephenidae and Elmidae) declined as shading increased. 3. Significant regressions of the densities of individual taxa upon algal and detrital standing stocks in cages had positive slopes, but algal biomass increased during the study while detrital standing stocks declined. Abundance of invertebrates declined or remained rather stable over time. Density increases resulting from a positive association with algae were apparently offset by declines in abundance correlated with reductions in detritus. 4. Declines in algal biomass were associated with greater shading to which animals may respond directly. To uncouple the link between scarcity of algae and reduction of light intensity, the plastic covers on two groups of cages (deeply shaded and unshaded) which had been placed in the stream for 28 days were reversed so that cages which had been shaded became unshaded and vice versa. The cages were recovered on day 33, Only Coleoptera demonstrated a positive association with atgae inside cages; no relationship between population densities and algal biomass or light intensity was apparent for other taxa. However, the design may have been confounded by deposition of sediment in the cages (due to declining stream discharge) which reduced population densities of colonizers. 5. This study documents changes in invertebrate abundance and morphospecies richness in response periphyton and detritus standing stocks within patches. Summation of such responses may account for observed variations in benthic communities among Hong Kong streams which differ in the extent of shading by riparian vegetation.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of red alder (Alnus rubra) stand density in upland, riparian forests on invertebrate and detritus transport from fishless headwater streams to downstream, salmonid habitats in southeastern Alaska. Red alder commonly regenerates after soil disturbance (such as from natural landsliding or timber harvesting), and is common along streams in varying densities, but its effect on food delivery from headwater channels to downstream salmonid habitats is not clear. Fluvial transport of invertebrates and detritus was measured at 13 sites in spring, summer and fall during two years (2000–2001). The 13 streams encompassed a riparian red alder density gradient (1–82% canopy cover or 0–53% basal area) growing amongst young-growth conifer (45-yr-old stands that regenerated after forest clearcutting). Sites with more riparian red alder exported significantly more invertebrates than did sites with little alder (mean range across 1–82% alder gradient was about 1–4 invertebrates m?3 water, and 0.1–1 mg invertebrates m?3 water, respectively). Three-quarters of the invertebrates were of aquatic origin; the remainder was of terrestrial origin. Aquatic taxa were positively related to the alder density gradient, while terrestrially-derived taxa were not. Streams with more riparian alder also exported significantly more detritus than streams with less alder (mean range across 1–82% alder gradient was 0.01–0.06 g detritus m?3 water). Based on these data, we predict that headwater streams with more riparian alder will provide more invertebrates and support more downstream fish biomass than those basins with little or no riparian alder, provided these downstream food webs fully utilize this resource subsidy.  相似文献

Cordgrasses in the genus Spartina are good examples of ecosystem engineers that modify habitat structure in estuaries throughout the world. In San Francisco Bay, California, USA, marshes containing native California cordgrass (Spartina foliosa) are being invaded by a hybrid (S. alterniflora × S. foliosa) formed after introduction of S. alterniflora. This study compared vegetation, sediment structure, and infaunal invertebrates in native and invaded marshes. We hypothesized that differences in the physical structure between S. foliosa and hybrid Spartina would be reflected in differences in density, biomass, diversity, and taxonomic composition of infauna. Hybrid Spartina modifies habitat structure more than S. foliosa by producing taller stems, and greater plant biomass both above- and belowground while occupying a much wider tidal range, thereby transforming open mudflats to a vegetated habitat. In general, S. foliosa areas contained significantly higher densities of benthic infauna than adjacent mudflats, while hybrid Spartina areas never contained greater infaunal densities than mudflats. This is because S. foliosa produces a moderate level of structure that can facilitate benthic invertebrates, whereas hybrid Spartina produces so much structure, particularly belowground, that it actually excludes invertebrates. Therefore, we suggest that these two closely related species both act as ecosystem engineers, but with opposing effects on invertebrate communities.  相似文献

Above–belowground (AG–BG) studies typically focus on plant‐mediated effects inflicted by living organisms. However, animal cadavers may also play an important role in AG–BG interactions. Here, we explore whether living and dead foliar‐feeding and soil‐dwelling invertebrates differentially affect plants and their associated AG and BG multitrophic communities. In a mesocosm study we separated effects of living and dead locusts (AG herbivores) and earthworms (BG detritivores) on experimental multitrophic communities consisting of eight plant species, an AG aphid and parasitoid community and a BG nematode community. We measured root and shoot biomass and determined plant community composition and densities of aphids, parasitoids and nematodes. Living locusts decreased total shoot and root biomass in the mesocosms, whereas living earthworms enhanced total root biomass. Cadavers of both invertebrates strongly increased total root and shoot biomass, and changed the plant community composition mainly via enhanced growth of grasses. Earthworm cadavers affected plant biomass and community composition more strongly than their living counterparts, while this was reversed for locusts. Structural equation models showed that aphids and parasitoids were influenced via changes in plant community composition. Nematode densities in the soil, especially those of bacterivorous and entomopathogenic nematodes, were strongly increased by dead invertebrates, but unaffected by living ones. We conclude that effects of invertebrates on plant growth and densities of AG and BG organisms strongly depend on whether the invertebrates are dead or alive. Remarkably, invertebrate cadavers may inflict even stronger effects than their living counterparts. Hence, our study reveals an important, but often neglected, role of animal cadavers in AG–BG studies.  相似文献

Many communities comprise species that select resources that are patchily distributed in an environment that is otherwise unsuitable or suboptimal. Effects of this patchiness can depend on the characteristics of patch arrays and animal movements, and produce non-intuitive outcomes in which population densities are unrelated to resource abundance. Resource mosaics are predicted to have only weak effects, however, where patches are ephemeral or organisms are transported advectively. The running waters of streams and benthic invertebrates epitomize such systems, but empirical tests of resource mosaics are scarce. We sampled 15 common macroinvertebrates inhabiting distinct detritus patches at four sites within a sand-bed stream, where detritus formed a major resource of food and living space. At each site, environmental variables were measured for 100 leaf packs; invertebrates were counted in 50 leaf packs. Sites differed in total abundance of detritus, leaf pack sizes and invertebrate densities. Multivariate analysis indicated that patch size was the dominant environmental variable, but invertebrate densities differed significantly between sites even after accounting for patch size. Leaf specialists showed positive and strong density–area relationships, except where the patch size range was small and patches were aggregated. In contrast, generalist species had weaker and variable responses to patch sizes. Population densities were not associated with total resource abundance, with the highest densities of leaf specialists in sites with the least detritus. Our results demonstrate that patchy resources can affect species even in communities where species are mobile, have advective dispersal, and patches are relatively ephemeral.  相似文献

2005年对长江口潮滩湿地互花米草(Spartina alterniflora)生长区不同季节大型底栖动物群落特征的研究表明:长江口互花米草生长区的大型底栖动物有21种,其中甲壳纲10种、多毛纲5种、腹足纲5种、辨鳃纲1种.主要种类有拟沼螺(Assiminea sp.)、背蚓虫(Notomastus latericeus)、尖锥拟蟹守螺(Cerithidea largillierli)、中国绿螂(Glauconome chinensis)、钩虾(Gammaridae sp.)等.食性功能群均以碎屑食者和植食者为主.大型底栖动物平均栖息密度为(650.5±719.2)个/m2,标准误主要是由于北湖的拟沼螺密度很大.栖息密度从大到小的顺序为沿河口梯度从内到外分布的北湖边滩、崇明东滩、金山卫边滩.大型底栖动物群落分布不均匀,沿河口梯度变化存在明显的空间差异.栖息密度和物种多样性在夏季最高,冬季最低.大型底栖动物平均生物量为(20.8±6.1)g/m2,季相变化为夏季>秋季>春季>冬季.BIO-ENV分析表明沉积物粒径和盐沼高度是大型底栖动物群落特征的主要影响因素.不同研究结果的差异除了时空因素外可能与互花米草的种群动态有关.加强不同时间尺度的研究有助于正确评价互花米草对大型底栖动物的影响.  相似文献

Shallow coves in Chesapeake Bay have abundant food and serve as nursery grounds for juvenile blue crabs. In this study, we examined the relationships between the diet of very small (4-40?mm CW) juvenile blue crabs and the benthic infauna in shallow, unvegetated nursery coves. We compared infauna in benthic samples with gut contents of juvenile blue crabs from six shallow coves in each of two sub-estuaries (Rappahannock and York Rivers) in Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, USA. Benthic communities differed depending on river and location, with abundant clams in upriver regions and abundant polychaetes in downriver regions. Juvenile crabs, like adults, appeared to be opportunistic feeders, with gut contents including clams, amphipods, polychaetes, small crustaceans, plant matter, and detritus. There was a positive relationship between polychaetes in the benthic samples and in crab guts, suggesting that juvenile crabs are opportunistic feeders on polychaetes in the benthos. Moreover, Ivlev's electivity index and foraging ratio showed that clams and polychaetes were selectively eaten at all locations. Alternatively, crabs selectively rejected amphipods. Crab densities corresponded positively with polychaete densities, which suggests that there may be bottom-up control of crab distributions and that food resources are important in nursery habitats.  相似文献

Recent theoretical advances in food web ecology emphasize the importance of body size disparities among species for the structure, stability and functions of ecosystems. Experimental confirmations of the functional importance of large species, independent of their trophic position, are scarce. We specifically examine the multiple ecological roles of large invertebrates from two distinct trophic levels in headwater streams. We experimentally manipulated the presence of large predatory invertebrates (two Perlid stoneflies) or detritivores (a limnephilid caddisfly and a Pteronarcys stonefly) in a two‐by‐two design in stream channels open to immigration/emigration of smaller biota. We assessed treatment effects on the trophic structure of the benthic invertebrate community, dynamics of basal resources (benthic algae and leaf litter of cedar and alder), and stability of litter decomposition rates against an experimental pulse perturbation (fine sediment input). The presence of the large invertebrates was associated with a ten‐fold decrease in the biomass of invertebrate filterers whereas other trophic groups were unaffected by the large species. The biomass of benthic algae was lower and the rate of mass loss of alder litter was higher in channels lacking the large predators, thus revealing trophic cascades operating along both algal‐based and detritus‐based food chains. The large predators had no detectable effect on the decomposition of cedar whereas both cedar and alder disappeared faster in the presence of the large detritivores. Furthermore, the large predators and large detritivores interactively influenced the decomposition of the cedar–alder mixture through a litter diversity effect and the variability of the rate of alder decomposition after a pulse of fine sediment. Because the large invertebrates affected multiple ecosystem properties, and as their absence was not rapidly compensated for by small immigrant species, our findings support the notion that large species could be critically important in controlling ecosystem structure and functioning.  相似文献

We determined the biomass and community structure of macroinvertebrates (>500 µm) associated with macrophytes, sediments, and unvegetated open water in three oligosaline (0.8 to 8.0 mS cm–1) and three mesosaline (8.0 to 30.0 mS cm–1) lakes in the Wyoming High Plains, USA. Total biomass of epiphytic and benthic invertebrates did not change with salinity, but biomass of macroinvertebrate zooplankton in open water was significantly higher in mesosaline lakes. Community composition of invertebrates differed between the two salinity categories: large grazer/detritivores (gastropods and amphipods) were dominant in oligosaline lakes, whereas small planktivores and their insect predators were more prevalent in mesosaline lakes. Both direct physiological effects of salinity, as well as a shift in the form of primary production from macrophytes to phytoplankton, probably explain these changes in community composition. Salinity effects on invertebrate communities appear to be less important to top avian consumers than are costs of osmoregulation.  相似文献

以长江口崇明东滩典型盐沼分布区为研究区域,在不同站位固定样地月际取样调查基础上,分析了大型底栖动物食性功能群沿高程梯度的分布特征及其主要影响因子,特别是外来入侵植物的影响。结果表明,不同高程区域,大型底栖动物优势种不同,除中潮带分布区以杂食性和植食性功能群为主外,其余各区域均以杂食性功能群为主。沿高程梯度,大型底栖动物各功能群的多度和生物量均发生极显著的变化(P<0.01),而不同功能群在不同植被带间的差异情况有所不同。其中,高程最低的光滩区域,肉食性功能群多度和生物量均显著高于高程相对较高的植被带(P<0.05);中潮带海三棱藨草分布区植食性功能群多度和生物量均显著高于其他高程区域(P<0.05)。主要生境因子,包括沉积物总磷、总氮、有机质、速效磷、硝态氮、铵态氮、中值粒径,以及植物的植株高度和地上部分生物量干重等指标,均随高程梯度变化显著(P<0.05),但不同因子变化特征有所不同。外来种互花米草的入侵并未造成相应区域大型底栖动物优势功能群的改变,但区域内杂食性功能群的多度和生物量均显著增加(P<0.05);环境因子中的部分因子,包括沉积物速效磷、硝态...  相似文献

Abstract

The distribution, abundance, and life histories of benthic invertebrates were investigated in a small, Nothofagus forest stream in North Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand. The fauna was dominated by Trichoptera and Plecoptera; Mollusca and fish were absent. Large particle detritivores and scrapers were the predominant functional groups found. Larval Philopotamidae (Trichoptera) were the only abundant filter feeders. Nymphs of the stonefly Spaniocerca zelandica and of mayflies, Deleatidium spp., were the most abundant animals on plant detritus; Deleatidium spp. were abundant on stones also. The distribution of invertebrates in riffles, loose stones, pools, and plunge pools was examined using mesh colonisation trays lifted in September, November, February, and May after respectively 88, 69, 98, and 94 days in situ. Most species were widely distributed, and sample densities of the more abundant insect species showed weak positive correlations with the biomass of detritus present in trays in most months. The turbellarian Neppia montana was overrepresented in trays compared with stream samples, but the relative abundance of most other species appeared to be similar to that on the stream bed. A large amount of silt accumulated in trays during a heavy flood, and was colonised mainly by the oligochaete Eiseniella tetraedra. Information on the life histories of 15 species of Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, and Coleoptera was obtained from a 1-year monthly sampling programme, in which 36 taxa were distinguished, and from collections of adult insects made over a 3–4-year period. Most species had poorly synchronised life histories, in that a wide size range was apparent among individuals in most months. Eight species emerged in at least 4 months; S. zelandica and the philopotamid Hydrobiosella stenocerca were taken in 8 and 9 months respectively.  相似文献

The construction of a flood control impoundment on Twitty's Creek added large numbers of organisms of limnetic origin to the stream ecosystem. However, the number of limnetic organisms per unit volume of water decreased rapidly as the distance downstream from the reservoir increased and, during most sampling periods, made up an insignificant portion of the total drift biomass at 7.2 km downstream. Factors favoring the extended downstream drift of limnetic organisms were high stream discharge and low water temperature.Several taxa of benthic organisms had much lower drift rates in the station immediately below the dam than at other stations and several taxa commonly taken at other stations were not captured immediately below the reservoir outfall. One possible explanation is that these organisms may have longer drift recruitment distances than the distance from the reservoir outfall to the sample location.A comparison of drift densities of organisms of benthic origin and benthic standing crop densities in channeled and unchanneled streams revealed that drift densities were higher in channeled streams than in unchanneled streams for most taxa of invertebrates. In addition, channeled streams appeared to have lower benthic standing crops than unchanneled streams for most taxa of invertebrates.In stream sections impacted by either channelization or the Twitty Lake outfall, the energy dynamics of the stream ecosystems were altered by increased density of drifting invertebrates. From the standpoint of increasing food availability to the fish fauna of the stream, these changes would appear to benefit drift feeding species and negatively impact bottom feeding species.  相似文献

Assemblages of small, motile invertebrates (epifauna) from eelgrass(Zostera muelleri) and unvegetated habitats in a shallow, marine-dominatedestuary were compared at five sampling periods over one year. Assemblagesbased on abundance and biomass of 21 taxa from the two habitats groupedseparately in multivariate analyses (MDS ordination), and these groupingswere shown to be significant using an analysis of similarities (ANOSIM)randomisation routine. Secondarily to habitat differences, weak influencesof water temperature and distance to open water, but not of salinity, weredetected at some periods. Abundance and biomass of key taxa and all speciescombined were higha in eelgrass than in unvegetated habitat. Cumaceans wereexceptional in being collected predominantly from unvegetated habitat. Totalepifaunal production and crustacean production estimated using twovariables, (1) the biomass of individuals of each size class, and (2) watertemperature, were also higher in eelgrass than in unvegetated habitat. Thehigher abundance in eelgrass of taxa such as amphipods, harpacticoidcopepods and polychaetes that are major components of the diets of smallfish is consistent with a model explaining higher fish numbers in eelgrassin terms of prey availability.  相似文献

2005年5月下旬在崇明东滩中潮区相同高程上的裸地(ld)、海三棱藨草(Scirpus×mariqueter)地(hs)、芦苇(Phragmites australis)地(lw)、互花米草(Spartinaalterniflora)地(hh)里取样研究了大型底栖动物群落。ld物种数、总个体数、Shannon-Wiener指数、Margalef物种丰富度指数、平均密度和平均生物量都是最低的;平均密度在裸地和3种盐沼植物地间都存在显著差异(P<0.05,LSD检验);平均生物量在海三棱藨草地与裸地间存在极显著的差异(P<0.01,LSD检验);等级聚类分析(Cluster)表明,裸地和盐沼植物地间大型底栖动物群落差异明显。hs、lw、hh中的优势种都是底上附着型的软体动物,而ld中则以穴居型的甲壳动物占优势;hs、lw、hh、ld的面上群与面下群的比值分别为0.56、0.63、0.63、0.75。3种盐沼植物地间大型底栖动物群落相似性程度较高,但非度量多维标度(MDS)排序仍然揭示出可以区分的差异。这些差异体现了盐沼植物对大型底栖动物群落的明显影响。盐沼植物是通过直接改变生境结构或间接影响水动力和沉积物扰动等作用进而明显地影响大型底栖动物群落,盐沼植物也是影响潮间带大型底栖动物群落的重要生态因子。  相似文献

Spatial distribution and seasonal variation in densities of the invertebrates were investigated for a year in three stream pools of a South Indian river. The effects of season, substrate type and water depth on the distribution were analyzed. Substrate type and season influenced the invertebrate distribution the most. Leaf packs harboured most of the organisms followed by macro-algal substrate and sand. The lowest densities were observed on rocky substrates and in the water column. Rocky substrates in shallow water supported higher densities of total invertebrates than deeper areas. Chironomid larvae dominated all benthic substrates throughout the year. Of the 19 invertebrate taxa studied, 6 showed no seasonality in densities, and most of the rest showed their highest densities in the pre-monsoon period and lowest in the SW monsoon or post-monsoon periods. However, in two of the three pools, the densities of total invertebrates were highest during the post-monsoon period with secondary peaks in the pre-monsoon period.  相似文献

A deep Main river was examined to determine the effects of selected environmental variables on benthic invertebrate community structure. Thirty-three sites were sampled by divers using artificial substrates. The Bray-Curtis ordination was used to establish community types based upon combinations of current velocity, siltation, and organic detritus. While some invertebrates were tightly clustered within particular communities, most taxa tended to concentrate in one community type but were not excluded from others. The results tended to support the individualistic hypothesis of species distribution.  相似文献
