The abundance and age structure of a Virginia, USA population ofMesocyclops edax that undergoes dormancy in an eutrophic lake was investigated from October 1988 through March 1989. During the fall all instars ofM. edax were present in the water column. By early December, only CI-CIV instars were found.M. edax was not found in the water column in January, but sediment cores in February revealed the presence of CIV's and adult females distributed predominantly at 0–3 cm and in lesser abundance at 3–6 cm. NoM. edax were found below 6 cm. By early March animals in the sediments emerged from dormancy and colonized the water column; CIV's and adult females predominated while CV's and adult males were present in small numbers. Dormancy of both juvenile and adult instars within one population is unusual among animal species. Life histories including multiple dormant stages may be more important for the adaptive evolution of cyclopoid copepods than calanoid copepods in freshwater habitats. 相似文献

The zooplankton community of a subtropical, eutrophic lake was studied over an annual cycle. Mesocyclops edax, the numerically dominant crustacean, exhibited a stationary age distribution for most of the year (July–March). Per capita growth rates (r) of M. edax approximated zero throughout most of the study, indicating a close correspondence between birth and death rates. High death rates in the spring and summer probably were due to intense predation, since physiological mortality was low and predators were abundant. Multiple regression analyses indicated that much of the variation in M. edax birth rates could be explained by abundance of their animal prey. Other plankton in this lake exhibited considerable seasonality, but not to the marked degree characteristic of temperate populations. The number of zooplankton species was low and cladocerans were scarce, as is characteristic of many eutrophic Florida Lakes. 相似文献

Reproductive dormancy in female Biprorulus bibax Breddin sampled during March-October in Southern New South Wales was terminated by exposure to 25°C under long (15h) and short (10h) photoperiods. 27% of individuals collected during March-May failed to oviposit under short days. Pre-oviposition period under short photoperiod was greates during March-June (22.4–61.7 d) and shortest during July-October (4.2–14.4 d). Under long photoperiod it was greatest in April and May (20.1–22.3 d) and shortest during June-October (4.9–16.6 d). Longevity ranged from 39.8–89.0 d, with longest lived females being collected in June and held under short days. Fecundity ranged from 51.6–164.4 and was greatest in individuals collected in June-July and held under short days. In females held under long days fecundity was greatest in March and lowest in May. These data indicate that female B. bibax pass the winter in a photoperiodically maintained reproductive diapause. 相似文献

Summary The periodic occurrence of summer/early autumn precipitation in the California annual grassland can result in the formation of early and late emerging cohorts of Erodium botrys and E. brachycarpum. The occurrence of early rainfall and the timing of such rainfall are highly variable from year to year. A series of field watering experiments in 1980–81 were used to simulate early emergence conditions that would result from significant rainfall (1 cm) occurring in mid-July, late August, and mid-September. Net reproduction was used to estimate fitness differentials between Erodium cohorts emerging in response to a watering treatment (early emerging cohorts) and Erodium cohorts emerging with the onset of winter rains in mid-October (late emerging cohorts). Survival was lower and gross reproduction was higher among early emerging cohorts than late emerging cohorts. For both species, net reproduction of the early cohort was lower than that of the late cohort under the July watering treatment and higher than that of the late cohort under the August watering treatment.Early cohorts, formed in response to rainfall in mid-September, 1982, were also compared demographically to later cohorts emerging in October. Compared to late cohorts, net reproduction, gross reproduction and survival were higher for the early cohorts.Common garden experiments indicate that differences in the duration of seed dormancy between the progenies of early and late emerging plants reflect a significant genetic component. Progency produced by early cohorts of E. brachycarpum from all three watering treatments possessed more extended seed dormancy than progeny of late cohorts. In E. botrys, progeny from early cohorts emerging in response to the July watering treatment were also more dormant than late progeny. In contrast, early cohorts of E. botrys emerging in response to the September watering treatment produced seed less dormant than seed produced by late cohorts. When combined with demographic data, indicating that fitness differentials between early and late cohorts varied with changes in the date of early emergence, genetic results suggest that year to year variation in early rainfall may act to retain genetic variation in the duration of seed dormancy. 相似文献

Summary The ability ofDrosophila melanogaster larvae in Europe to encapsulate the eggs of their most important parasitoids,Asobara tabida andLeptopilina boulardi, shows a large amount of geographical variation. Interestingly, encapsulation ability againstA. tabida is not correlated with encapsulation ability againstL. boulardi. This indicates that the encapsulation system ofD. melanogaster larvae has parasitoid-specific components. The variation in encapsulation ability can only partly be explained by the incidence of parasitism on the larvae. Involvement of endogenous gibberellins in potato tuber dormancy and early sprout growth: a critical assessment 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The role of endogenous gibberellins (GAs) in the regulation of potato (Solanum tuberosum) tuber dormancy was examined by determining: 1. changes in endogenous GA levels during natural dormancy progression, 2. the effects of GA biosynthesis inhibitors on tuber dormancy duration and 3. the dormancy status and tuber GA levels in a dwarf mutant of potato. The tubers (cv. Russet Burbank) used in these studies were still completely dormant after 98 days of storage. Between 98 and 134 days of storage, dormancy began to end and tubers exhibited limited (< 2 mm) sprout growth. Tuber dormancy weakened with further storage and tubers exhibited greater rates of sprout growth after 187 days of storage. Tubers stored for 212 days or longer were completely non-dormant and exhibited vigorous sprout growth. Immediately after harvest, the endogenous contents of GA19, GA20, and GA1 were relatively high (0.48-0.62 ng g fresh weight(-1)). The content of these GAs declined between 33 and 93 days of storage. Internal levels of GA19, GA20, and GA, rose slightly between 93 and 135 days of storage reaching levels comparable to those found in highly dormant tubers immediately after harvest. Levels of GA19, GA20, and GA1 continued to increase as sprout growth became more vigorous. Neither GA4 nor GA8 was detected in any tuber sample regardless of dormancy status. Dormant tubers exhibited a time-dependent increase in apparent GA sensitivity. Freshly harvested tubers were completely insensitive to exogenous GAs. As postharvest storage continued, exogenous GAs promoted premature dormancy release with GA1 and GA20 eliciting the greatest response. Injection of up to 5 microg tuber(-1) of kaurene, GA12, GA19 or GA8 had no effect on dormancy release. Sprout growth from non-dormant tubers was also promoted by exogenous GA in the following sequence of activity: GA1 = GA20 > GA19. Kaurene, GA12, and GA8 were inactive. Continuous exposure of developing tubers to inhibitors of GA biosynthesis (AMO-1618, ancymidol, or tetcyclasis) did not extend tuber dormancy but rather hastened dormancy release. Comparison of tuber dormancy and GA1 content in tubers of a wild-type and dwarf mutant of S. tuberosum ssp. andigena revealed a near-identical pattern of dormancy progression in spite of the absence of detectable levels of GA1 in tubers of the dwarf sibling at any time during dormancy progression. Collectively, these results do not support a role for endogenous GA in potato tuber dormancy release but are consistent with a role for GAs in the regulation of subsequent sprout growth. 相似文献

Alkyl-substituted hydroxybenzenes (AHBs), which are autoinducers of microbial dormancy (d 1 factors), were found to stabilize the structure of protein macromolecules and modify the catalytic activity of enzymes. In vitro experiments showed that C6-AHB at concentrations from 10−4 to 10−2 M, at which it occurs in the medium as a true solution and a micellar colloid, respectively, nonspecifically inhibited the activity of chymotrypsin, RNase, invertase, and glucose oxidase. C6-AHB-induced conformational alterations in protein macromolecules were due to the formation of complexes, as evidenced by differences in the fluorescence spectra of individual RNase and C6-AHB and their mixtures and in the surface tension isotherms of C6-AHB and trypsin solutions. Data on the involvement of dormancy autoinducers in the posttranslational modification of enzymes and their inhibition will provide further insight into the mechanisms of development and maintenance of dormant microbial forms. 相似文献

Adult specimens of the calanoid copepod Centropages abdominalis collected from February through April 1986 in Shinhamako, a saline lake connected to Tokyo Bay, were heavily infested with the stalked ciliate Zoothamnium. The number of copepods and those infested varied during the infestation period; in February when the copepod population was large, the incidence of infestation was low, whereas in March when the copepod population was small, copepods infested with Zoothamnium were proportionally more abundant. Numerical variations of infested copepods may correspond to changes in the Zoothamnium population. No specimens of Acartia omorii, which coexists with C. abdominalis, were infested in 1986, although a small number of A. omorii were infested with peritrich ciliates in 1985. Some shrimp larvae were also covered with the same peritrichs as copepods. Nevertheless, as a whole, the relationship between the phoront and its carrier seems to be specific. The highest incidence of infested copepods was approximately 30% similar to that in 1985. The sex ratio of C. abdominalis changed on each sampling date but in general females were more numerous than males. The percentage of infested males was higher than that of infested females, suggesting that the former can be attached to more easily than the latter. 相似文献

Summary The sizes of adult damselflies (Coenagrion puella) that were marked at emergence and recaptured as mature adults at the natal pond and at the next nearest pond were compared. In addition the sizes of a much larger sample of animals that were never recaptured were compared with those that returned to breed at the natal pond. There was no statistically significant difference in mass or wing length between adults in either comparison. This result contrasts with a previous study on a coenagrionid species in which, from an equally small sample, some evidence of size-biased dispersal was detected (dispersing adults were larger than those returning). 相似文献

Summary The purpose of the study was to quantify long distance movements in populations of pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), by estimating origins and distances travelled by immigrants into a southern Manitoba population. A strong relationship was demonstrated between latitude of origin and photoperiods at which pea aphid populations are stimulated to produce the diapause stage (Smith 1987). Therefore, the approach was to use photoperiodic response as a physiological marker to identify the source of immigrant aphids. The responses of 89 clones from Glenlea, Manitoba (49°38N), sampled 5 times over 2 seasons, were measured. One sample of clones collected the first season had photoperiodic responses similar to those of a population about 300 km to the south, and significantly different from clones collected in spring of the same year at the same site. Weather analysis corroberates that the migrants were probably carried into Manitoba on a southerly flow of air during the previous 24 to 36 h. 相似文献

If air temperature is high, this value can be achieved in only 10 days, but if the temperature remains too low, the heat accumulation can require up to 35 days. Dormant coffee (Coffea arabica L.) flower buds require water stress to stimulate regrowth. A xylem specific water-soluble dye, azosulfamide, was used to quantify water uptake of buds after their release from dormancy by water stress. In non-stressed flower buds, the rate of water uptake was generally slower and variable compared to stressed flower buds, where the rate of uptake tripled from 1 to 3 days after rewatering and preceded the doubling of fresh and dry weight of buds. Free, ester and amide IAA levels of developing flower buds were measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-selective ion monitoring using an isotope dilution technique with [13C6]IAA as an internal standard. Throughout development, the majority of IAA was present as amide IAA. The proportions of amide and free IAA increased one day after plants were released from water stress, and preceded the doubling of fresh and dry weight. Free and conjugated IAA content per bud remained stable during the period of rapid flower growth until one day before anthesis.Abbreviations FW

Drepanopus pectinatus, the most numerous species of Copepod in the Kerguelen Archipelago completes 4 generations a year. The succession of generations follows the hydrological seasons. Each generation may be characterized by the cephalothorax length of the developmental stages C1 to C6. The mean lengths of stages C2 to C6 are shown to be significantly different (P > 0.05) between seasons (i.e. between generations). The size-classes have a unimodal distribution from stages C1 to C4. For copepodite C5 and adults, bimodal histograms reflect the differentiation of males and females.A reverse trend of the development pattern of lengths is demonstrated in this subantarctic species: a decrease with decreasing temperatures (6° to 2°) from April to September, and an increase with the rising temperatures (2° to 7°) from October to February.Two populations of females are distinguishable in spring and summer, by their small (0.950–1.299 mm length of cephalothorax, 55%) or large (1.300–1.800 mm, 45%) size, respectively.The differences in mean length cannot be explained by their relation to the mean temperature alone. Calanoid copepods are major components of most lacustrine ecosystems and their grazing activities may influence both phytoplankton biomass and species composition. To assess this we conducted four seasonal, in situ, grazing experiments in eutrophic Lake Rotomanuka, New Zealand. Ambient concentrations of late stage copepodites and adults of calanoid copepods (predominantly Calamoecia lucasi, but with small numbers of Boeckella delicata) were allowed to feed for nine days on natural phytoplankton assemblages suspended in the lake within 1160 litre polyethylene enclosures. The copepods reduced the total phytoplankton biomass of the dominant species in all experiments but were most effective in summer (the time of highest grazer biomass) followed by spring and autumn. In response to grazing pressure the density of individual algal species showed either no change or a decline. There were no taxa which increased in density in the presence of the copepods. The calanoid copepods suppressed the smallest phytoplankton species (especially those with GALD (Greatest Axial Linear Dimension) < µm) and there appeared to be no selection of algae on the basis of biovolume. Algal taxa which showed strong declines in abundance in the presence of the copepods include Cyclotella stelligera, Coelastrum spp., Trachelomonas spp., Cryptomonas spp., and Mallomonas akrokomos. Calanoid copepods are considered important grazers of phytoplankton biomass in this lake. The study supports the view that high phytoplankton:zooplankton biomass ratios and large average algal sizes characteristic of New Zealand lake plankton may, at least partly, be caused by year round grazing pressure on small algae shifting the competitive balance in favour of larger algal species. 相似文献

Eodiaptomus japonicus was collected in the north basin of Lake Biwa, Japan, on six dates from 11 to 25 June 1987. Temporal changes in its vertical
distribution and reproduction indices were small, but those in its abundance were large. Mortality was high in the naupliar

In the shallow and eutrophic subtropical aquatic ecosystems, which it generally inhabits, the omnivorous copepod Mesocyclops thermocyclopoides encounters a wide variety of animal prey types including ciliates, rotifers, and cladocerans. We studied prey selectivity in laboratory-reared adult females of this species given a choice of (i) prey types belonging to different taxa (ciliates, rotifers, cladocerans, and cyclopoid nauplii), and (ii) different prey species within a taxonomic group differing in body size, morphology or behaviour. We also tested the effect of different proportions of prey species on its selectivity. Prey type proportion had no significant effect on selectivity of the copepod, nor was there any evidence of switching based on the relative abundance of prey. Among the ciliate prey species tested, the largest species, Stylonychia mytilus was positively selected regardless of its relative abundance, while the smallest, S. notophora was selected only when its density was higher. Offered a choice of three species of a brachionid rotifer differing in size, the copepod selected the largest of them, Brachionus calyciflorus, and avoided the smallest B. angularis. The evasive rotifer Hexarthra mira was also avoided. When prey choice included three cladoceran species Daphnia similoides, Moina macrocopa and Ceriodaphnia cornuta, the copepod selected the intermediate-sized M. macrocopa regardless of the abundance of the other two species. Although it fed on Mesocyclops nauplii when there was no choice, M. thermocyclopoides avoided them when alternative food was available. In a multispecies prey choice test, the copepod selected predominantly the rotifer B. calyciflorus and the cladoceran M. macrocopa. We suggest that the prey selectivity patterns shown by M. thermocyclopoides are adaptive in that they lead to ingestion of the most profitable prey. 相似文献

Summary
Hordeum arizonicum (2n=42) and H. lechleri (2n=42) were crossed with both H. bulbosum (2n=14 or 28) and H. vulgare (2n=14 or 28) and progeny plants were obtained through embryoculture. Crosses of arizonicum with diploid bulbosum invariably resulted in haploids (2n=21) of arizonicum, whereas arizonicum by tetraploid bulbosum or diploid vulgare crosses produced both hybrids and haploids of arizonicum. The lechleri by diploid bulbosum or diploid vulgare crosses resulted in haploids of lechleri, while lechleri by tetraploid bulbosum resulted in well differentiated embryos which failed to germinate.Hybrid embryos derived from the haploid producing crosses exhibit chromosome variability, suggesting that chromosome elimination leads to haploid formation.The results also indicate that the ratio of the parental genomes in the zygote is a critical factor which determines the chromosome elimination or stability in any cross combination. Furthermore, both arizonicum and lechleri appear to be of similar genetic strength in eliminating bulbosum and vulgare chromosomes. Summary Interspecific crosses of Hordeum brachyantherum (2n = 28) and H. depressum (2n = 28) with H. bulbosum (2n = 14 or 28) and H. vulgare (2n = 14 or 28) were made. Crosses between brachyantherum and diploid bulbosum resulted in dihaploids (2n = 14) of brachyantherum and hybrids (2n = 21), whilst the crosses of brachyantherum by tetraploid bulbosum or vulgare gave hybrid progeny. Similarly, crosses between H. depressum and diploid bulbosum resulted in dihaploids (2n = 14) of depressum and hybrids (2n = 21), whereas depressum by tetraploid bulbosum or vulgare invariably produced hybrids.Cytological observations on 12 day old embryos obtained from these crosses revealed chromosome variability down to 14 in crosses with diploid bulbosum indicating thereby that chromosome elimination leads to haploid formation. Embryonic cells from the brachyantherum by diploid vulgare cross also exhibited a certain degree of chromosomal instability as micronuclei.The results indicate that the ratio of parental genomes in the zygote determines whether haploids or hybrids will be produced in crosses of brachyantherum or depressum with bulbosum.
