The number and size of eggs produced by the Common toad (Bufo bufo) was investigated at a site in southern England. There was a trend within the population as a whole for egg weight, egg number and ovary weight to increase with female size, as defined by body length and body weight. However, with use of partial correlation analysis to remove the effects of female size from the data, some of these trends changed. Thus, for females of the same size, although egg number increased with ovary weight, no significant correlation was found between egg weight and ovary weight whilst egg weight became negatively correlated with egg number. The possible significance of variation in egg weight on tadpole survival and female reproductive success is discussed. 相似文献

Two independent studies of adult common toad, Bufo bufo , movements between different spawning ponds/populations both within and between years were made in England and Sweden during the spring breeding periods of1987–1990. The results of the two studies were subsequently combined since they were found to be complementary. In addition, in England during 1984 and 1985, large numbers of 'toadlets' were marked so that they could be identified if recaptured as breeding adults.
The degree of relocation between ponds was negatively correlated to the distance between ponds. The proportion of both males and females that moved between ponds within a particular year was significantly less than the proportion relocating between years. In any year, between 79% and 96% of adults that survived to breed the following year, returned to the original pond. Similarly, of the toadlets marked during1984–85, 81% of the males that subsequently returned as breeding adults were captured in their pond of origin.
Isolation, in relation to both population dynamics and population genetics, is defined and its implications for the management of common toad populatins discussed. 相似文献

Summary The sensory basis and spatial range of orientation to the breeding site were studied in the toadBufo bufo, during two breeding seasons. Toads were displaced passively from their breeding pond and fitted with a tracking device to record the path of migration in individuals. The directional choice and the straightness of trails after release were used to quantify the effect of experimental treatments. In both years, control (untreated): toads headed to the breeding site with the same precision at all release sites. The initial orientation of toads blinded by opaque tape over their eyes. did not differ from controls, but the return paths were not as direct. The directional choice of anosmic toads was apparently random, however, individuals followed a straight path in a chosen direction. Anosmic toads also blinded were completely disoriented, moving in cycloid trails. Bar magnets glued to the head caused an increase in dispersion of toads. However, in some individual releases a directional bias without increased dispersion was observed. Sky conditions (clear or overcast) did not influence the initial orientation or the dispersion of toads. Nevertheless, the breeding site component was significantly correlated with wind direction in relation to the breeding site. Wind blowing from the breeding site improved the initial orientation, whereas wind from the opposite direction reduced the breeding site component. The spatial range for the ability to relocate the breeding pond after displacement exceeded 3 km, but the time taken to select the correct direction increased with the displacement distance. The results indicate that after displacement the initial orientation ofB. bufo is based mainly on olfactory and magnetic cues, with visual control of straightness. 相似文献

Summary An investigation regarding the question of whether there exists a macula densa as part of the juxtaglomerular apparatus in the kidney of amphibians has been carried out. With the aid of a histochemical reaction for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity, the presence of a macula densa zone as a specialized part of the distal tubule in the toad Bufo bufo was demonstrated. Summary In a light microscopic study the course of the tubule in the kidney of the toadBufo bufo was studied. The distal tubule returning to the glomerulus of its origin appears to enclose the afferent arteriole. In that area, from which a three dimensional graphic reconstruction is made, there is an intimate contact between tubular and vascular wall. The latter contains granulated media cells. In the part of the tubule adjacent to the afferent arteriole an accumulation of nuclei is present. It is suggested that this structure is similar to the macula densa of the mammalian juxtaglomerular apparatus. A 19-year study of a common toad population in south Dorset, UK, was carried out between 1980 and 1998. The daily arrival of sexually mature male and female toads at a breeding pond was recorded each year. The timing of the main arrival of toads at the breeding pond was highly correlated with the mean daily temperatures over the 40 days immediately preceding the main arrival. When the temperatures were higher than average, breeding occurred significantly earlier in the year than if they were either average or lower than average. During the study, the toad breeding seasons were early (2–13 February) in 5 years (1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1998), late (16–23 March) in 2 years (1986, 1996) and average (25 February–8 March) during the remaining 12 years. Evidence was found suggesting that common toads have a daylength threshold of about 9 h, below which the migration to the breeding pond does not occur. Evidence was also found indicating that common toads in southern England have a threshold temperature for activity of about 6°C and that the onset of breeding activity is highly correlated with the number of days during the 40 days prior to the main arrival at the breeding pond that were at or above this temperature. Predicting the start of the main breeding migration to a pond in any year may be possible by comparing the pattern of the 40-day running mean daily temperatures from 21 December the preceding year with those from previous years when the start of breeding activity is known. Although all five of the earliest recorded toad breeding years occurred during the last 10 years, and were associated with the occurrence of particularly mild winters, a significant trend towards earlier breeding in recent years compared with previous years was not found. Summary The migratory behaviour of the toad Bufo bufo was studied from February 1985 to April 1986 in the submontane region of Bavaria, West Germany. Toads were fitted with a mechanical tracking device to record individual paths of migration. Three aspects of migratory behaviour were quantified: orientation in relation to the breeding site, straightness of path, and locomotory activity. The annual activity period began with migration from the hibernation sites to the breeding pond in April. The paths went straight towards the breeding pond independent of the distance (70–420 m). During the period of oviposition the preference for the breeding site direction vanished and toads moved away from the breeding pond, but in less straight paths than before. In summer migratory activity decreased considerably and was restricted to small areas, the home ranges, at distances of 55–1600 m from the natal breeding pond. The straightness of path was rather low, because toads often returned to their starting points. During rainy nights toads occasionally left their home ranges for extensive excursions. In autumn most toads again migrated towards the breeding pond, but paths were significantly less straight and direct than in spring. However, toads stopped before reaching the breeding pond and hibernated in holes or under the leaf layer. The mortality rate of tracked toads was about 45%. The relative influence of 17 environmental variables on locomotory activity was evaluated by principal component analysis and stepwise multiple regression. Temperature at night and rainfall variables accounted for significant amounts of variance, whereas temperature by day, air humidity, and atmospheric pressure showed no correlation. Activity decreased if temperature approached 0° C or after long periods without rainfall. Within a certain range of tolerance, however, the locomotory activity of the toads was widely independent of environmental factors, indicating that endogeneous factors are more important sources of variation in the migratory behaviour of these toads than commonly assumed. 相似文献

Chorusing Behaviour,a Density-dependent Alternative Mating Strategy in Male Common Toads (Bufo bufo)

Male chorusing behaviour was studied in a population of common toads (Bufo bufo) on the island of Öland south Sweden, and the functional role of male advertisement calling in this species was experimentally examined. Calling males were larger and heavier than non-calling males (t = 2.41, p < 0.025 and t = 2.36, p < 0.025, respectively). However, small males were also found to call. This indicates that large males persisted in calling for longer and/or called more often. The proportion of calling males decreased as population size increased during the breeding season, indicating that calling is a low density strategy. Females responded more readily to calls than males. There were insufficient data to determine if the dominant frequencies of advertisement calls were inversely correlated with male body size, however, this relationship was found for the similar release calls. Females were found not to discriminate between high and low frequency calls, but when given a choice between two calls of different sound pressure levels (SPL), females were attracted to the louder calls. Thus, the function of chorusing is to advertise the position of males to mate-seeking females when the population density is low. 相似文献

Summary In Bufo bufo at stage III6 the first endocrine islets appear in the part of the pancreas corresponding to the dorsal anlage. At stage IV2, 5 days later, the pancreatic duct develops and new islets arise by budding off from the ductal epithelium. The ultrastructural study of the secretory granules morphology of endocrine cells has distinguished four different cell types: B-cells (stage III9), A-cells (stage IV3), D-cells (stage IV3) and a fourth type not yet identified (stage IV3). By immunocytology insulin and corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) cells have been demonstrated at stage III9, and glucagon and somatostatin cells at stage IV1. Lastly, endocrine islets can be homogeneous (predominantly containing insulin cells, rarely glucagon cells) or heterogeneous (insulin cells at the centre and glucagon or somatostatin cells at the periphery). Hypotheses are put forward for the origin and the constitution of the different generations of endocrine islets and isolated cells. 相似文献

Calling male toads were tested behaviourally for their prey catching responses to wormlike stimuli and assigned to groups of non-hungry and hungry depending on their prey catching motivation before being prepared for visual unit, massed unit and slow potential shift (SPS) recording from the optic tectum. Control recordings to visual stimuli were made before recording the effects of application of isotonic solutions containing concentrations of 0-41 mM K(+). Application of solution was followed by presentation of the visual stimulus while the solution still bathed the tectum. The best tectal responses were made to large square visual stimuli in the non-hungry toads, perhaps because recordings were made in the breeding season. Responses of the tectum to solution addition were significant in the concentration range of 7-17 mM K(+). Hungry toads showed an earlier, smaller response than non-hungry (sexually motivated) animals. When the visual stimulus was presented, there were unit and massed unit responses at all bathing solution concentrations, which were larger in non-hungry animals. These experiments revealed that toads motivated to feed respond earlier than non-hungry toads to application of artificial CSF to the tectum, though non-hungry toads responded best to the subsequent visual stimulus. 相似文献

For 9 years, three breeding populations of the common toad Bufo bufo were censused during the breeding season. The hypothesis that catchability is equal for breeding males in each population and breeding period was tested. By comparing the lengths of all males captured with those recaptured in the same breeding period, it was shown that large males had a higher catchability than small ones. The ultimate cause of this unequal catchability remains unclear, but several causes can be rejected. Population parameters based on capture and capture – recapture data are highly influenced by this unequal catchability. 相似文献

The effects of 10 weeks of starvation, restricted feeding, or ad lib. feeding on nutritional state and testes functions were investigated in male toads that had artificially hibernated in a refrigerator before being placed at room temperature. Food intake increased for about four weeks in both the fed groups. After this initial period the toads on restricted food ate their ration for the remaining part of the experiment, and they developed fat bodies of sizes characteristic of male toads during late summer in nature. The toads fed ad lib. increased food intake to about twice that of those on restricted food. After two weeks of high feeding rate food intake rapidly declined and remained low to the end of the experiment, when the fat bodies were larger than normally seen in nature. At the end of the experiment spermatogenetic activity had declined to a low level in the starving toads, whereas it was high in the fed toads. Starvation for 10 weeks did not affect the late stages of spermatogenesis. Interstitial cells and thumbpads remained reduced in the starving toads, but were restored in the fed toads. The importance of the annual cycle in nutritional state for gonadal cycles in male and female toads is discussed. 相似文献

An investigation of the relationship between the onset of sexual maturity, age and body size in common toads Bufo bufo was started in 1984 at a pond in southern England. During the toad breeding seasons of 1984 and 1985, 7259 common toad'metamorphs'were captured and permanently marked so that if captured as adults their true age would be known. Although a very small proportion of males and females reached sexual maturity at ages of two and four years respectively, most did so much later and asynchronously. The body size of toads breeding for the first time was relatively constant for each sex and not correlated with age. The rational behind our understanding of the mechanism of female choice is discussed in the light of these results. 相似文献

Summary The reproductive behaviour of the toad Bufo calamita was studied in a large population in the northern Rhineland, Germany. Toads bred at four spatially separated but neighbouring areas including 34 breeding ponds. Three methods were applied to monitor quantitatively the intensity of breeding and migratory activity: capture-mark-recapture, a mechanical tracking device, and radio-telemetry. In 1987 a twofold temporal spacing of breeding activity was observed: (1) division of the reproductive period into early, main, and late breeding periods; (2) subdivision of each breeding period into several short calling periods. Since weather conditions were favourable during most of the reproductive period, environmental factors contributed little (23.4%–41.0%) to the temporal variation in breeding intensity as shown by multivariate statistics. The period of vocalization (April to August) included the activity of three distinct male groups. The first group called from April to mid-May (2 calling periods), the second from May to early July (5 calling periods) and the third from mid-July to August (2 calling periods). Within a calling period most males stayed near their calling sites and migratory activity was low. Extensive movements were detected when a new group of males immigrated from the feeding regions to the breeding areas and males that had been calling previously emigrated, at least partly. However, exchange of males among the neighbouring breeding choruses were clearly audible. It is suggested that the energetic costs of vocalization impeded continuous calling activity in individuals and accounted for the periodical variations in chorus size. The short-time variations of breeding activity therefore probably reflect the physiological limits of toads in a situation where the weather permits continuous reproductive activity. 相似文献
