Abstract Correlation among phenotypic traits may be explained by correlational selection, the simultaneous selection of more than one trait, or by genetic and/or developmental factors. In Escallonia myrtoidea, a tree with scented flowers from central Chile, inflorescence size and the amount of floral scents were positively correlated. Independent manipulation of scent and inflorescence size in a factorial design was used to assess the occurrence of pollinator‐mediated correlational selection. Dependency on pollinators for seed set was also assessed. If pollinator‐mediated correlational selection occurs, nonadditive effects of both traits are expected, albeit only when the effect of manipulating the state of such traits is disadvantageous with respect to the naturally occurring inflorescences, and provided that plants are not limited by pollinators for seed set and pollen export. Escallonia myrtoidea was very strongly pollinator‐limited for seed set and pollen export. Pollinator‐mediated additive effects were not observed in the frequency of visits by pollinators, pollen export, and seed set of E. myrtoidea after experiencing scent and inflorescence size manipulations. Consequently, there was no support for pollinator‐mediated correlational selection between those traits, suggesting the prevalence of genetic and/or developmental factors.  相似文献

We studied the reproductive biology of three sympatric Araceae species, Anthurium sagittatum, A. thrinax and Spathiphyllum humboldtii in French Guiana. The plants flowered simultaneously and were visited by scent‐collecting male euglossine bees, which were apparently their major pollinators. In total, each species was visited by 3–7 euglossine species, and 2–3 euglossine species accounted for at least 80% of all flower visits, with visits being plant species‐specific. Floral scent consisted of 6–10 main compounds, which made up 76–94% of the total amount of volatiles and were specific in these high amounts to each plant species. We suggest that the different floral scents lead to clear separation of the main pollinating euglossine species, providing a directed and efficient intraspecific pollen flow that results in high reproductive success. Since the simple floral (inflorescence) morphology of the studied plants does not support any morphological mechanisms to exclude visitors, as for example in euglossine‐pollinated perfume orchids, floral scent might be of major importance for the reproductive isolation and sympatric occurrence of these plants.  相似文献

This study describes the GC‐FID, GC/MS, GC‐O, and enantioselective GC analysis of the essential oil hydrodistilled from leaves of Lepechinica mutica (Lamiaceae), collected in Ecuador. GC‐FID and GC/MS analyses allowed the characterization and quantification of 79 components, representing 97.3% of the total sample. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (38.50%) and monoterpene hydrocarbons (30.59%) were found to be the most abundant volatiles, while oxygenated sesquiterpenes (16.20%) and oxygenated monoterpenes (2.10%) were the minor components. In order to better characterize the oil aroma, the most important odorants, from the sensorial point of view, were identified by Aroma Extract Dilution Analysis (AEDA) GC‐O. They were α‐Pinene, β‐Phellandrene, and Dauca‐5,8‐diene, exhibiting the characteristic woody, herbaceus, and earthy odors, respectively. Enantioselective GC analysis of Lmutica essential oil revealed the presence of twelve couples and two enantiomerically pure chiral monoterpenoids. Their enantiomeric excesses were from a few percent units to 100%. Moreover, the essential oil exhibited moderate in vitro activity against five fungal strains, being especially effective against Mcanis, which is a severe zoophilic dermatophyte causal agent of pet and human infections.  相似文献

The critically endangered Synaphea stenoloba (Proteaceae) has numerous scentless flowers clustered in dense inflorescences and deploys a ballistic pollen ejection mechanism to release pollen. We examined the hypothesis that active pollen ejection and flowering patterns within an inflorescence influence the reproductive success (i.e. fruit formation) of individual flowers within or among inflorescences of S. stenoloba in a pollinator‐excluded environment. Our results showed that: (1) no pollen grains were observed deposited on the stigma of their own flower after the pollen ejection system was manually activated, indicating self‐pollination within an individual flower is improbable in S. stenoloba; (2) fruit set in the indoor open pollination treatment and the inflorescence‐closed pollination treatment indicated that S. stenoloba is self‐compatible and pollen ejection can potentially result in inter‐floral pollination success; (3) fruit set in the inflorescence‐closed pollination treatment was significantly lower than that of indoor open pollination, indicating within‐ and between‐flower pollination events in an inflorescence are most likely limited, with pollination between inflorescences providing the highest reproductive opportunity; and (4) analysis of the spatial distribution of cumulative fruit set on inflorescences showed that pollen could reach any flower within an inflorescence and there was no functional limitation on seed set among flowers located at various positions within the inflorescence. These data suggest that the pollen ejection mechanism in S. stenoloba can enhance inter‐plant pollination in pollinator‐excluded environments and may suggest adaptation to pollinator scarcity attributable to habitat disturbance or competition for pollinators in a diverse flora. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 170 , 59–68.  相似文献

The compounds responsible for highly individual aroma profile of Coriandrum sativum L. honey were isolated by headspace solid‐phase microextraction (HS‐SPME; used fibers: A: polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/divinylbenzene (DVB) and B: divinylbenzene/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane), as well as ultrasonic solvent extraction (USE; used solvents: A: pentane/Et2O 1 : 2 (v/v) and B: CH2Cl2) and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS). Unusual chromatographic profiles were obtained containing derivatives of linalool/oxygenated methoxybenzene. trans‐Linalool oxide (11.1%; 14.6%) dominated in the headspace, followed by other linalool derivatives (such as cis/trans‐anhydrolinalool oxide (5.0%; 5.9%), isomers of lilac aldehyde/alcohol (14.9%; 13.8%) or p‐menth‐1‐en‐9‐al (15.6%; 18.5%)), octanal, and several low‐molecular‐weight esters. The major compounds in the solvent extracts were oxygenated methoxybenzene derivatives such as 3,4,5‐trimethoxybenzyl alcohol (26.3%; 24.7%), methyl syringate (23.8%; 11.7%), and 3,4‐dimethoxybenzyl alcohol (5.6%; 13.9%). Another group of abundant compounds in the extracts were derivatives of linalool (e.g., (E)/(Z)‐2,6‐dimethylocta‐2,7‐diene‐1,6‐diol (17.8%; 16.1%)). Among the compounds identified, cis/trans‐anhydrolinalool oxides and 3,4,5‐trimethoxybenzyl alcohol can be useful as chemical markers of coriander honey.  相似文献

1. Several bee species are declining due to multiple factors, including pathogens. Ingestion of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) pollen can dramatically reduce the bumble bee gut pathogen Crithidia bombi, but little is known about how timing and exposure to sunflower pollen consumption affects pathogen load. 2. Two experiments were carried out to investigate how exposure to sunflower pollen relative to pathogen exposure affects Crithidia bombi in Bombus impatiens. Foraging trials with pollen‐producing and male‐sterile (pollen absent) sunflower lines were performed to investigate whether sunflower pollen affected pathogen transmission in a single foraging bout, and 7‐day laboratory trials were done to investigate whether timing and duration of exposure to sunflower pollen after infection affected C. bombi. 3. In foraging trials, pollen presence on inflorescences inoculated with C. bombi did not affect transmission (pathogen cell counts of foraging workers) 1 week later, suggesting that a brief experience with sunflower pollen concurrent with pathogen exposure is insufficient to reduce infection. In laboratory trials, consuming sunflower pollen for the first 3.5 days or all 7 days after infection reduced cell counts compared with a negative control pollen, but consuming sunflower pollen starting 3.5 days after infection did not. Consuming sunflower pollen for 7 days was significantly and substantially more effective than any other treatment. Thus, both duration and timing of exposure to sunflower pollen may affect pathogen load. 4. These results are important for understanding ecological disease dynamics in natural settings with free‐flying bumble bees, and may inform decisions about using medicinal diets to manage bumble bee health commercially.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition and the odor‐active compounds of the essential oils from Evolvulus alsinoides, which is a well‐known edible and medicinal plant. The volatile compounds in the oils were identified by hydrodistillation (HD) and solvent‐assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE) in combination with GC, GC/MS, GC/O (=olfactometry), aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA), and relative flavor activities (RFA values). The most abundant compound in the HD oil was cisα‐necrodol (12.62%), an irregular monoterpene with a cyclopentane skeleton, which is very unusual in the plant kingdom. In the SAFE oil, the main components included 2‐butoxyethanol (9.01%), benzyl alcohol (8.01%), and γ‐butyrolactone (7.37%). Through sensory analysis, 21 aroma‐active compounds were identified by GC/O. The most intense aroma‐active compounds in the HD oil were hexan‐1‐ol and γ‐nonalactone, both of which showed high RFA values. α‐Methyl‐γ‐butyrolactone and dimethyl sulfone contributed more strongly to the aroma of the SAFE oil. These results imply that the essential oils of E. alsinoides deserve further investigation in the food industry.  相似文献

In this study, the flowering mechanisms and pollination strategies of seven species of the highly diverse genus Homalomena (Araceae) were investigated in native populations of West Sarawak, Borneo. The floral scent compositions were also recorded for six of these species. The selected taxa belong to three out of four complexes of the section Cyrtocladon (Hanneae, Giamensis and Borneensis). The species belonging to the Hanneae complex exhibited longer anthesis (53–62 h) than those of the Giamensis and Borneensis complexes (ca. 30 h). Species belonging to the Hanneae complex underwent two floral scent emission events in consecutive days, during the pistillate and staminate phases of anthesis. In species belonging to the Giamensis and Borneensis complexes, floral scent emission was only evident to the human nose during the pistillate phase. A total of 33 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were detected in floral scent analyses of species belonging to the Hanneae complex, whereas 26 VOCs were found in samples of those belonging to the Giamensis complex. The floral scent blends contained uncommon compounds in high concentration, which could ensure pollinator discrimination. Our observations indicate that scarab beetles (Parastasia gestroi and P. nigripennis; Scarabaeidae, Rutelinae) are the pollinators of the investigated species of Homalomena, with Chaloenus schawalleri (Chrysomelidae, Galeuricinae) acting as a secondary pollinator. The pollinators utilise the inflorescence for food, mating opportunities and safe mating arena as rewards. Flower‐breeding flies (Colocasiomyia nigricauda and C. aff. heterodonta; Diptera, Drosophilidae) and terrestrial hydrophilid beetles (Cycreon sp.; Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae) were also frequently recovered from inflorescences belonging to all studied species (except H. velutipedunculata), but they probably do not act as efficient pollinators. Future studies should investigate the post‐mating isolating barriers among syntopically co‐flowering Homalomena sharing the same visiting insects.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate the amount of pollen produced by anemophilous woody taxa with allergenic properties and with considerable contribution in the concentration of pollen in the air of a Mediterranean city (Thessaloniki, Greece). The taxa selected are Corylus avellana, Cupressus sempervirens var. horizontalis and var. pyramidalis, Olea europaea and Platanus orientalis; each was studied in more than one sampling stations differing in elevation, direction or both. O. europaea produced the highest number of pollen grains per flower (1.3 × 105 ± 0.1 × 105) and P. orientalis the highest per inflorescence (3.3 × 106 ± 0.2 × 106). At the level of crown, pollen grains produced were of the order of 109 per surface/volume unit for O. europaea and the two C. sempervirens varieties; for the other two taxa, they were of the order of 106. Pollen production was lower at higher elevation and northern direction and depended on the size of the floral unit sampled (flower for O. europaea, inflorescence for all other species): the bigger the floral unit, the more pollen it contained. Our results and reports from other areas, where C. sempervirens and O. europaea grow, show that these two Mediterranean species produce comparable amounts of pollen at the levels of inflorescence or flower, respectively, wherever they occur.  相似文献

Speciation is typically accompanied by the formation of isolation barriers between lineages. Commonly, reproductive barriers are separated into pre‐ and post‐zygotic mechanisms that can evolve with different speed. In this study, we measured the strength of different reproductive barriers in two closely related, sympatric orchids of the Ophrys insectifera group, namely Ophrys insectifera and Ophrys aymoninii to infer possible mechanisms of speciation. We quantified pre‐ and post‐pollination barriers through observation of pollen flow, by performing artificial inter‐ and intraspecific crosses and analyzing scent bouquets. Additionally, we investigated differences in mycorrhizal fungi as a potential extrinsic factor of post‐zygotic isolation. Our results show that floral isolation mediated by the attraction of different pollinators acts apparently as the sole reproductive barrier between the two orchid species, with later‐acting intrinsic barriers seemingly absent. Also, the two orchids share most of their fungal mycorrhizal partners in sympatry, suggesting little or no importance of mycorrhizal symbiosis in reproductive isolation. Key traits underlying floral isolation were two alkenes and wax ester, present predominantly in the floral scent of O. aymoninii. These compounds, when applied to flowers of O. insectifera, triggered attraction and a copulation attempt of the bee pollinator of O. aymoninii and thus led to the (partial) breakdown of floral isolation. Based on our results, we suggest that adaptation to different pollinators, mediated by floral scent, underlies species isolation in this plant group. Pollinator switches may be promoted by low pollination success of individuals in dense patches of plants, an assumption that we also confirmed in our study.  相似文献

The volatile profiles of rare Malus domestica Borkh . honey were investigated for the first time. Two representative samples from Poland (sample I) and Spain (sample II) were selected by pollen analysis (44–45% of Malus spp. pollen) and investigated by GC/FID/MS after headspace solid‐phase microextraction (HS‐SPME) and ultrasonic solvent extraction (USE). The apple honey is characterized by high percentage of shikimic acid‐pathway derivatives, as well as terpenes, norisoprenoids, and some other compounds such as coumaran and methyl 1H‐indole‐3‐acetate. The main compounds of the honey headspace were (sample I; sample II): benzaldehyde (9.4%; 32.1%), benzyl alcohol (0.3%; 14.4%), hotrienol (26.0%, 6.2%), and lilac aldehyde isomers (26.3%; 1.7%), but only Spanish sample contained car‐2‐en‐4‐one (10.2%). CH2Cl2 and pentane/Et2O 1 : 2 (v/v) were used for USE. The most relevant compounds identified in the extracts were: benzaldehyde (0.9–3.9%), benzoic acid (2.0–11.2%), terpendiol I (0.3–7.4%), coumaran (0.0–2.8%), 2‐phenylacetic acid (2.0–26.4%), methyl syringate (3.9–13.1%), vomifoliol (5.0–31.8%), and methyl 1H‐indole‐3‐acetate (1.9–10.2%). Apple honey contained also benzyl alcohol, 2‐phenylethanol, (E)‐cinnamaldehyde, (E)‐cinnamyl alcohol, eugenol, vanillin, and linalool that have been found previously in apple flowers, thus disclosing similarity of both volatile profiles.  相似文献

The objectives were to (a) quantify the effects of high daytime temperature (HDT) from gametogenesis to full bloom on photosynthesis and pod set in soybean (Glycine max L. Merril) genotypes and (b) assess the relationships among photosynthesis, cardinal temperatures for pollen germination, in vitro pollen germination percentage, canopy reflectance, and pod‐set percentage. Three field experiments were conducted, and Experiment I had HDT between gametogenesis and full bloom (36.5°C to 38.6°C) compared with Experiments II and III (29.5°C to 31.6°C; optimum temperature). HDT decreased photosynthesis (22%) and pod‐set percent (11%) compared with Experiment III. Cultivars had higher photosynthesis and pod‐set percent than plant introduction (PI) lines. The cultivars (i.e., IA3023 and KS4694) and PI lines (i.e., PI393540 and PI588026A) were HDT tolerant and susceptible, respectively. The decreased pod‐set percentage in susceptible genotypes (PI lines) was associated with pollen characteristics. Significant positive (r2 ≥ 0.67) association between photosynthesis, cardinal temperatures for pollen germination (Topt and Tmax) with pod‐set percentage was observed. However, a negative (r2 ≥ ?0.43) association between photosynthesis and pod set with canopy reflectance at visible spectrum was observed. In vitro pollen germination and canopy reflectance at visible spectrum can be used as a high‐throughput phenotypic tool for breeding HDT‐tolerant genotypes.  相似文献

Sweet cherry is a self‐incompatible fruit tree species in the Rosaceae. As other species in the family, sweet cherry exhibits S‐RNase‐based gametophytic self‐incompatibility. This mechanism is genetically determined by the S‐locus that encodes the pollen and pistil determinants, SFB and S‐RNase, respectively. Several self‐compatible sweet cherry genotypes have been described and most of them have mutations at the S‐locus leading to self‐compatibility. However, ‘Cristobalina’ sweet cherry is self‐compatible due to a mutation in a pollen function modifier that is not linked to the S‐locus. To investigate the physiology of self‐compatibility in this cultivar, S‐locus segregation in crosses involving ‘Cristobalina’ pollen, and pollen tube growth in self‐ and cross‐pollinations, were studied. In the crosses with genotypes sharing only one S‐haplotype, the non‐self S‐haplotype was inherited more frequently than the self S‐haplotype. Pollen tube growth studies revealed that the time to travel the whole length of the style was longer for self‐pollen tubes than for cross‐pollen tubes. Together, these results suggest that ‘Cristobalina’ pollen tube growth is slower after self‐pollination than after cross‐pollination. This reproductive strategy would allow self‐fertilisation in the absence of compatible pollen but would promote cross‐fertilisation if cross‐compatible pollen is available, a possible case of cryptic self‐incompatibility. This bet‐hedging strategy might be advantageous for an ecotype that is native to the mountains of the Spanish Mediterranean coast, in the geographical limits of the distribution of this species. ‘Cristobalina’ blooming takes place very early in the season when mating possibilities are scarce and, consequently, self‐compatibility may be the only possibility for this genotype to produce offspring.  相似文献

The root holoparasitic angiosperm sunflower broomrape (Orobanche cumana) specifically affects sunflower (Helianthus annuus) growth and causes severe damage all over the world. This investigation was designed to examine the protective effects of salicylic acid (SA) treatment to the seeds of an O. cumana‐susceptible cultivar of sunflower (TK0409). Sunflower seeds were pretreated with different concentrations (0, 0.5 and 1 mM) of SA and inoculated with O. cumana for 4 weeks. O. cumana infection resulted in reduction in plant biomass, endogenous SA level, and the expression of SA‐related genes including pal, chs and NPR1. By contrast, O. cumana infection enhanced the production of reactive oxygen species, activities of antioxidant enzymes as well as contents of phenolics and lignin. Seed treatment with 1 mM SA increased sunflower biomass in terms of plant height, fresh weight and dry weight by 10%, 13% and 26%, respectively, via reducing the number and biomass of established O. cumana. The increase of hydrogen peroxide contents by 14% in the 1 mM SA treated sunflower plants appeared to be because of the inhibition of ascorbate peroxidase and catalase by exogenous SA. The enhanced expression of pathogenesis‐related genes (PR3 and PR12, encoding chitinase and defensin, respectively) after 4 weeks of inoculation indicated that systemic acquired resistance was induced in the SA treated sunflower in which the level of endogenous SA was also elevated in a dose‐dependent manner. The increased expression of a hypersensitive‐responsive (HR) gene hsr indicated that the resistance of sunflowers might be associated with a hypersensitive reaction which was activated by exogenous SA treatment.  相似文献

Introduction – Moso‐bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) is well known as an edible shoot in Asia, and the stems of moso‐bamboo are used as tableware due to its characteristic odour. Despite the pleasant odour of bamboo stems, no detailed analysis of the volatile compounds has been reported. Objective – To clarify the potent odourants contributing to the characteristic aroma of the bamboo, the aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) method was performed through gas chromatography olfactometry (GC‐O) analysis. In addition, relative flavour activity (RFA) was calculated, in which both the flavor dilution (FD) factor and weight percentage of each compound are involved. Results – Eighty‐nine compound in bamboo stems oil were identified by GC and GC‐MS. The main components of the oil were palmitic acid (16.5%), (E)‐nerolidol (10.2%) and indole (8.1%). In sensory analysis, 18 aroma‐active compounds were detected by aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA). The most intense aroma‐active compounds were eugenol (sweet, clove‐like, green) and (E)‐2‐nonenal (green). Conclusion – The results of the sniffing test, RFA and FD factor indicated that (E)‐2‐nonenal and eugenol were estimated to have a bamboo‐like aroma, and aldehyde compounds, such as a phenylacetaldehyde (floral) and C9–C10 unsaturated aldehydes, make the aroma of bamboo. Floral fragrances are an important component for pollinator attraction in beetle-pollinated flowers. Several genera in the Proteaceae contain beetle-pollinated species. However, there is no information on the floral scent chemistry of beetle-pollinated members of the family. In this paper we report on the spatial variation and differences between developmental stages in emission of inflorescence (flowerhead) volatiles of four South African Protea species (P. caffra, P. dracomontana, P. simplex, and P. welwitschii) that are pollinated by cetoniine beetles. The scents from different inflorescence parts (bracts, perianth, styles, and nectar) and from successive anthesis stages of whole inflorescences were sampled using dynamic headspace collection and identified using GC–MS. Although the four species shared many scent compounds, possibly reflecting their close phylogenetic relationships and common pollinators, they showed significant differences in overall scent composition due to various species-specific compounds, such as the unique tiglate esters found in the scent of P. welwitschii. The strongest emissions and largest number of volatiles, especially monoterpenes, were from inflorescences at full pollen dehiscence. Senescing inflorescences of two species and nectars of all species emitted proportionally high amounts of acetoin (3-hydroxy-2-butanone) and aromatic alcohols, typical fermentation products. As a consequence, the scent composition of nectar was much more similar among species than was the scent composition of other parts of the inflorescence. These results illustrate how the blends of compounds that make up the overall floral scent are a dynamic consequence of emissions from various plant parts.  相似文献

To assess variation in the proportion of self‐fertilized seeds among flowers within inflorescences and the relationship between floral traits and the rate of self‐fertilization, the proportion of self‐fertilized seeds among individual flowers was estimated using ten microsatellite markers in self‐compatible plants of Aquilegia buergeriana var. oxysepala. Within‐inflorescence variation in floral traits, such as the duration of the male and female phases, flower size, herkogamy and the number of pollen grains and ovules in two natural populations, were investigated. The first flower in an inflorescence produced more seeds and a higher proportion of self‐fertilized seeds than the second flower. The higher proportion of self‐fertilized seeds in the first flowers was accompanied by a higher number of pollen grains and ovules in the bud stage and the female phase. These results indicate that the high proportion of self‐fertilized seeds in the first flowers in an inflorescence may be due to the high number of remaining pollen grains in the female phase. This suggests that variation in floral traits within inflorescences affects seed quality and quantity among flowers within inflorescences.  相似文献
