This study evaluated the effectiveness of a head-mounted portable light device, Re-Timer, for phase advancing the circadian rhythm of healthy sleepers in the home environment. The Re-Timer was designed to address the limitations of traditional bright light boxes, making it more practical and efficient for administering light therapy. Eighteen healthy participants underwent a crossover design treatment protocol, consisting of seven consecutive mornings of using Re-Timer compared with the same procedure but not using Re-Timer. Circadian phase was measured using salivary dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) and subjective sleepiness was also assessed for other phase-change effects. After using the Re-Timer for seven mornings, a significant phase advance in DLMO of 41 min compared to a 10-min delay in the no-light control condition was observed. However, subjective sleepiness did not differ significantly between the two conditions. A few minor and transient side effects were experienced by participants, but no treatment was required. The Re-Timer is an effective and safe device for advancing the circadian rhythm of healthy sleepers at home. Future research on its clinical utility could make Re-Timer a practical and affordable way to self-administer bright light therapy for sleep disorders.

Exercise-induced inspiratory muscle fatigue (IMF) has been quantified for several sports. However, it is not yet known if, or to what extent, IMF is determined by the competition distance. The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of 3 different competitive front-crawl swimming race distances on the magnitude of IMF. Ten well-trained swimmers from a local swim team participated in the study and on separate days completed maximal 100-, 200-, and 400-m time trials (TTs). Before and after each trial, maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) was measured and %IMF determined from pre- and post-time-trial differences in MIP. The heart rate (HR) and rate of perceived dyspnea (RPD) was also assessed. For all distances, posttrial MIP was lower than pretrial MIP, though this was only significant for 100 m (p < 0.05). There were no differences between distances for absolute posttrial MIP. The %IMF after the 100-m TT (8.2 ± 4.1%) was, however, significantly greater than the 400 m (4.9 ± 3.8%) TT (p < 0.05) but not 200-m TT. There were no differences between trials for HR or RPD (p > 0.05). There were no relationships between %IMF and mean pretrial MIP (r = -0.28, p > 0.05) or between %IMF and time for any TT (100 m, r = 0.25; 200 m, r = 0.34; 400 m r = 0.18; p > 0.05). The lack of difference between trials for posttrial absolute MIP suggests that race distance during swimming does not substantially influence the degree of IMF.  相似文献

Relative binocular disparity cannot tell us the absolute 3D shape of an object, nor the 3D trajectory of its motion, unless the visual system has independent access to how far away the object is at any moment. Indeed, as the viewing distance is changed, the same disparate retinal motions will correspond to very different real 3D trajectories. In this paper we were interested in whether binocular 3D motion detection is affected by viewing distance. A visual search task was used, in which the observer is asked to detect a target dot, moving in 3D, amidst 3D stationary distractor dots. We found that distance does not affect detection performance. Motion-in-depth is consistently harder to detect than the equivalent lateral motion, for all viewing distances. For a constant retinal motion with both lateral and motion-in-depth components, detection performance is constant despite variations in viewing distance that produce large changes in the direction of the 3D trajectory. We conclude that binocular 3D motion detection relies on retinal, not absolute, visual signals.  相似文献

Visual acuity and contrast sensitivity progressively diminish with increasing viewing eccentricity. Here we evaluated how visual enumeration is affected by visual eccentricity, and whether subitizing capacity, the accurate enumeration of a small number (~3) of items, decreases with more eccentric viewing. Participants enumerated gratings whose (1) stimulus size was constant across eccentricity, and (2) whose stimulus size scaled by a cortical magnification factor across eccentricity. While we found that enumeration accuracy and precision decreased with increasing eccentricity, cortical magnification scaling of size neutralized the deleterious effects of increasing eccentricity. We found that size scaling did not affect subitizing capacities, which were nearly constant across all eccentricities. We also found that size scaling modulated the variation coefficients, a normalized metric of enumeration precision, defined as the standard deviation divided by the mean response. Our results show that the inaccuracy and imprecision associated with increasing viewing eccentricity is due to limitations in spatial resolution. Moreover, our results also support the notion that the precise number system is restricted to small numerosities (represented by the subitizing limit), while the approximate number system extends across both small and large numerosities (indexed by variation coefficients) at large eccentricities.  相似文献

Natural exploration of complex visual scenes depends on saccadic eye movements toward important locations. Saccade targeting is thought to be mediated by a retinotopic map that represents the locations of salient features. In this report, we demonstrate that extrastriate ventral area V4 contains a retinotopic salience map that guides exploratory eye movements during a naturalistic free viewing visual search task. In more than half of recorded cells, visually driven activity is enhanced prior to saccades that move the fovea toward the location previously occupied by a neuron's spatial receptive field. This correlation suggests that bottom-up processing in V4 influences the oculomotor planning process. Half of the neurons also exhibit top-down modulation of visual responses that depends on search target identity but not visual stimulation. Convergence of bottom-up and top-down processing streams in area V4 results in an adaptive, dynamic map of salience that guides oculomotor planning during natural vision.  相似文献

In the development of the next generation of smart homes and remote health monitoring system, human action analyzing algorithms are of vital importance. Among different sensor technologies, vision-based systems are superior in the sense that they can provide a non-intrusive interface between human occupants and the environment. It is almost impossible to build an efficient system for human action recognition without fine-tuning and evaluating its performance on a realistic dataset. An important challenge here is the absence of such a comprehensive dataset. To address this issue, we introduce a new dataset designed for human action recognition applications in a smart home environment. The performance of the existing human action recognition algorithms is tested using this dataset. In addition, we propose a heuristic approach based on error-correction codes to prioritized different actions in the learning process and improve the recognition accuracy for difficult actions up to 17%.  相似文献

The sagittal and frontal components of the stabilogram were monitored in 14 healthy subjects standing on a rigid or pliant support under three different conditions of visual control: with the eyes opened (EO), with the eyes closed (EC), or in a virtual visual environment (VVE). Under the VVE conditions, the subjects looked at a three-dimensional image of elements of a room (a 3-D artificial room) that was generated by a computer and locked to the fluctuations of the body center of gravity (CG) so that the visual connection between body sway and shifts of the visual environment typical of normal visual conditions was reproduced. Frequency filtration of the fluctuations of the foot’s center of pressure (FCP) was used to isolate the movements of the vertical projection of the CG and determine the difference between these two variables. The changes in the variables (CG and FCP-CG) were estimated using spectral analysis followed by the calculation of the root mean square (RMS) amplitudes of their spectral fluctuations. In subjects standing on a rigid support, the RMS amplitudes of the spectra of both variables were the highest under the VVE and EC conditions and the lowest under the EO conditions. In subjects standing on a pliant support, body sway was considerably enhanced, which was accompanied by a different pattern of visual influences. The RMS values were the highest under the EC conditions and were lower by a factor of 2–2.5 under the EO and VVE conditions. Thus, it has been demonstrated that the cerebral structures controlling posture ignore the afferent input from the eyes under VVE conditions, if the subject is standing on a rigid support and the CG fluctuations are relatively small; however, this afferentation is efficiently used for maintaining the posture on a pliable support, when the body sway is substantially enhanced.  相似文献

Tests assessing the fear of humans by measuring avoidance or approach reactions of the test animals towards humans can be useful tools in welfare assessment schemes. In this study, we wanted to compare tests assessing the reactions of laying hens towards humans in the home environment to a test performed in a novel environment. As well we investigated inter-test correlations in the home environment. We performed several tests to assess the hens’ approach and avoidance reactions towards an unfamiliar human inside the home environment of laying hens in 14 caged flocks and 10 free-range flocks. We measured the reactions of hens to a stationary person and a moving person approaching individual hens in both systems, as well as reactions to a stationary person trying to touch individual hens in non-cage systems and reactions of caged hens to a person passing by. Additionally, a standardised arena test was performed outside the home environment to compare the birds’ avoidance reactions towards an approaching human in a novel environment. In caged hens no significant correlations of tests performed inside the home environment with the arena test could be found, but there were moderate to high correlations (rs > 0.6) with one parameter of the arena test in non-caged hens. The different tests applied inside the home environment correlated significantly and moderately to highly with each other, supporting the validity of these tests to measure fear of humans. The caged laying hens in our study reacted differently in the novel environment from the non-caged birds, indicating that the birds’ reactions towards humans in an unfamiliar environment depend on the housing system. In summary, a comparison of the level of fear of humans between flocks in different housing systems by using an arena test outside the home environment seems difficult and was not possible in the present study.  相似文献

The behaviour of house cats Felis silvestris catus from nine litters was recorded at 4 months, 1 year and 2 years of age, in their home environment immediately after meals fed by their owners. We extracted by principal components analysis four elements of 'behavioural style' that were consistent from one age to another: based upon behaviour patterns that were most heavily loaded on each component, these were labelled as Staying Indoors, Rubbing, Investigative and Boldness elements. The Staying Indoors and Rubbing elements are similar to two aspects of behavioural style identified in a previous study of adult cats; the Boldness element, possibly coupled with the Investigative element, may be similar to the shy/bold continuum identified in controlled studies of cats and other species. Four-month-old male cats were the most likely to Stay Indoors; the Rubbing element increased with age in the majority of individuals, both male and female. Littermates tended to be similar to one another in Rubbing (at 4 months) and Boldness (up to 1 year). Behavioral and neurophysiological studies of numerical comparisons have shown a "distance effect," whereby smaller numerical distances between two digits are associated with longer response times and higher activity in the parietal region. In this experiment, we introduced a two-choice condition (between either the smaller/lower or the larger/higher of two digits) and examined its effect on brain activity by fMRI. We observed longer response times and greater activity with the choice of smaller numbers ("choice effect") in several brain regions including the right temporo-parietal region, (pre)cuneus, superior temporal sulcus, precentral gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, bilateral insula, and anterior cingulate cortex. These regions correspond to areas that have been suggested to play a role in attentional shift and response conflict. However, brain activity associated with the distance effect disappeared even though the behavioral distance effect remained. Despite the absence of the distance effect on brain activity, several areas changed activity in relation to response time, including regions that were reported to change activity in both a distance effect and a reaction-time-related manner. The result suggested that the level of task load may change the activity of regions that are responsible for magnitude detection.  相似文献

New directions in film and media theory have begun to focus on precognitive, embodied aspects of film viewing. Drawing on these recent theoretical approaches, this article examines correspondences between the brain–mind state of the dreamer and the film viewer and formal similarities between the cinematic image and dream images. First, the study asks whether cinema's evolution toward the production of images that are more easily processed by the brain has also made film images easily accessible during dream-sleep. Then it shows how the cinematic image and the visual imaging of dreams depend on a similar construction of navigable space. The analysis suggests that the bodily systems for simulating movement and establishing spatial orientation function in a similar manner during dreaming and film viewing. 1. 1. The purpose of this research was to study the relationship between indoor environment and fatigue by analyzing office workers' fatigue and evaluation of indoor environment according to occupation.

2. 2. This study concerned office workers' fatigue (before and after work), questionnaires on indoor environment, and measurement of the physical environment. The subject (562 people) were businessmen, interior designers, and salesmen.

3. 3. The result of this study showed that there was a high correlation between the office workers' feeling of fatigue and the office environment.

4. 4. This research demonstrated that the workers of each type of occupation responde differently to similar office environments.

It is widely believed that visual systems are optimized for the visual properties of the environment inhabited by the organism. A specific instance of this principle is known as the Efficient Coding Hypothesis, which holds that the purpose of early visual processing is to produce an efficient representation of the incoming visual signal. The theory provides a quantitative link between the statistical properties of the world and the structure of the visual system. As such, specific instances of this theory have been tested experimentally, and have been used to motivate and constrain models for early visual processing.  相似文献

The late adolescence version of the HOME Inventory (LA-HOME) documents actions, objects, events, and conditions connected with the home environment of children ages 16 and older still living at home. The study entailed a multi-stage process of measurement construction and validation that involved over 400 families from four states. The families were diverse by family composition, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Findings indicated expected relations between scores on six constituent domains of LA-HOME and measures of both family context and adolescent development. Relations varied across race/ethnic groups but were similar to those observed for the other four age-based versions of the HOME Inventory.  相似文献

This paper describes the impact of a decision support system on the quality of recorded diagnoses and the completeness of medical records. The assumption is that for quality assessment purposes enough data have to be recorded in an electronic medical record so that diagnostic decisions can be justified. The hypotheses were tested that active decision support will lead to better quality recorded diagnoses and more complete medical records. Three groups of ten GPs were presented with 10 cases each. The GPs had to enter the data about these cases in a GP information system. One group of GPs was not supported. The second group was presented with the ICHPPC-II-Defined criteria that had to be fulfilled when a diagnosis was entered. In a third group, the GPs were asked those data that were needed to justify an entered diagnosis (active support). It could be shown that the last group of GPs entered better quality diagnoses than the other two groups. These latter groups also entered so little data that most of their diagnoses could not be justified. It is concluded from the study that only active decision support will lead to better diagnoses and a more complete medical record that can be used for quality assessment.  相似文献

Classic foraging theory predicts that humans and animals aim to gain maximum reward per unit time. However, in standard instrumental conditioning tasks individuals adopt an apparently suboptimal strategy: they respond slowly when the expected value is low. This reward-related bias is often explained as reduced motivation in response to low rewards. Here we present evidence this behavior is associated with a complementary increased motivation to search the environment for alternatives. We trained monkeys to search for reward-related visual targets in environments with different values. We found that the reward-related bias scaled with environment value, was consistent with persistent searching after the target was already found, and was associated with increased exploratory gaze to objects in the environment. A novel computational model of foraging suggests that this search strategy could be adaptive in naturalistic settings where both environments and the objects within them provide partial information about hidden, uncertain rewards.  相似文献
