Paralarvae of the family Gonatidae were sampled in the Gulfof Alaska during spring 2001–2003. Taxonomic characterswere determined to allow identification of the specimens tospecies. The dorsal head chromatophore pattern (DHCP) was themost robust character and allowed identification to speciesfor the first time without requiring the removal and examinationof the radula. Six different DHCPs were found among the sixspecies in the study area. The 1140 specimens collected consistedof the following six species: Berryteuthis anonychus (759),Berryteuthis magister (71), Gonatopsis borealis (155), Gonatuskamtschaticus (1), Gonatus madokai (4) and Gonatus onyx (143).The specimens had a size range of 3.0–20.63 mm dorsalmantle length with the majority of specimens smaller than 10 mm.All species showed an increasing trend in abundance from theshelf (0–200 m) to the slope (200–1000 m)to the basin (>1000 m) except G. onyx in 2001 and 2002.Wide variation in distribution and abundance was found for thefour most abundant species; however, in general, B. anonychuswas most abundant and widely distributed, followed by Gonatopisborealis, Gonatus onyx and B. magister. The microstructure, morphology and ontogenetic development ofstatoliths and age and growth of 405 planktonic paralarvae and117 juveniles belonging to 10 species of gonatid squids (Cephalopoda,Oegopsida) were studied in the region of the continental slopein the western part of the Bering Sea (57°00'–61°30'N,163°00'E–179°20'W). The statolith microstructureof all species was characterized by the presence of a largedroplet-shaped nucleus and bipartite postnuclear zone dividedinto two by the first stress check, except for Berryteuthismagister which had only one stress check and an undivided postnuclearzone. In Gonatus spp., completion of development of the postnuclearzone coincided with full development of the central hook onthe tentacular club. Daily periodicity of statolith growth incrementswas validated by maintaining 13 paralarvae of the four mostabundant species in captivity. All species might be subdividedinto two groups based on statolith microstructure, i.e. specieswith a central position of the nucleus within the first statolithcheck (Gonatopsis spp., Egonatus tinro and B.magister) and specieswith the nucleus shifted to the inner side of the first statolithcheck (Gonatus spp.). Comparative analysis of statolith morphologyshowed that paralarval statoliths have species-specific charactersthat allowed the construction of keys to identify species ofgonatid paralarvae based on their statoliths. Analysis of paralarvalgrowth using statoliths revealed that these cold-water planktonicgonatid paralarvae have fast growth rates, attaining a mantlelength of 7–10 mm at 15–20 days and 20–25mm at 35–70 days.  相似文献

In the northwestern Bering Sea in autumn, the epipelagic cephalopod community was represented by the boreal fauna, and was found to be composed of three families and nine species of the order Teuthida: Gonatidae (Berryteuthis magister, Boreoteuthis borealis, Gonatopsis japonicus, Gonatus madokai, Gonatus kamtschaticus, Gonatus onyx, and Gonatus pyros), Chiroteuthidae (Chiroteuthis calyx) and Onychoteuthidae (Onychoteuthis borealijaponica). Two pelagic gonatid species (B. borealis and G. kamtschaticus) dominated the cephalopod community in the upper 50 m. The distribution patterns of B. borealis and G. onyx were associated with diel vertical migrations of these squid. The distribution of two distinct size groups of G. kamtschaticus suggested ontogenetic migration of larger squid to deeper layers, and adds to previous data suggesting that this species may be a heterogeneous assemblage. Demersal B. magister rarely occurred in the surface waters. The occurrence of maturing O. borealijaponica in the southern marine area indicated that these were occasional seasonal migrants from the ocean. The occurrence of juvenile C. calyx suggested that these squid may conduct vertical forage migrations from deep waters to the surface layers.  相似文献

Statolith size and growth was used to determine the influence of abiotic factors on the growth of Loligo vulgaris and Sepioteuthis australis embryos. Recently spawned egg masses collected from the field were incubated in the laboratory under different levels of light intensity, photoperiod, or short periods of low salinity (30‰). Double tetracycline staining was used to follow statolith growth. In L. vulgaris constant light conditions produced significantly slower growth in the embryonic statoliths and embryos held at summer photoperiod had slower statolith growth than those held at winter photoperiods. However once they hatched out there was no evidence that photoperiod affected statolith growth. After hatching, in all photoperiods statolith growth rates decreased in comparison with late embryonic rates. In S. australis embryos, differences between the high and medium light intensities for summer and intermediate photoperiods were found, suggesting that under summer incubation temperature, longer daylengths at medium light intensity favoured higher statolith growth for this species. In comparison to controls, slower statolith growth in S. australis embryos due to low salinity only occurred when exposed for 72 h. Comparison with previous studies indicates that temperature seems to be the main abiotic factor influencing statolith growth during early stages, however, interactions among all abiotic factors needs to be determined as well as the unknown influence of other isolated factors, e.g., oxygen concentration within the egg mass.  相似文献

Statolith shape and microstructure were studied in 151 specimens of the common arctic squid Gonatus fabricii (7.3–322 mm pen length) collected in the southern Norwegian Sea. Statolith development and growth both comprised two main periods, which corresponded with the epipelagic and meso-bathypelagic ontogenetic periods of G. fabricii. During the epipelagic period (pen length range from 3 to 50–60 mm), statoliths quickly developed from the droplet-like form in early paralarvae to the pre-definite stage in juveniles (30–50 mm pen length). Paralarval and juvenile statoliths grew with high growth rates, and their microstructure contained narrow first-order growth increments. Three main growth zones (Z1, Z2, Z3) developed during this period, being well distinguished from each other by specific patterns of microstructure and separated from each other by distinct checks. During the meso-bathypelagic period (from 50–60 to 322 mm pen length), statoliths hardly changed their shape and grew very slowly. Only one growth zone (Z4) was formed within the statolith microstructure, characterized by disappearance of the first growth increments and formation of specific second-order bands. Each second-order band consisted of approximately seven first-order increments. If the assumption “one increment-one day” is true for G. fabricii, the squid would then be a slow-growing animal with a life span for both sexes not exceeding 2 years. Accepted: 25 May 1999  相似文献

Summary

Each of the second quartet micromeres of Ilyanassa obsoleta was removed and the effects on larval development analyzed. Structures most often affected by removal of 2a were the left velar lobe, the left eye and the left statolith. Removal of 2b resulted in no consistent pattern of defects. Removal of 2c resulted in atypical shell development, absence of the heart, and eversión of the stomodeum; additional effects noted in some individuals involved the right velar lobe, the right statolith and perhaps the right eye. Anomalous birefringent bodies appeared frequently in the anterior region of the larva, on the right side after removal of 2c, and on the left side after removal of 2a. After removal of 2d the external shell was usually absent or rudimentary, the stomodeum was often everted, and other effects were noted in some individuals. On the basis of the deletion experiments, each second quartet micromere is judged to have a different embryonic value.  相似文献

In the marine environment, aggregated distribution in the genus Crepidula is a very common phenomenon. Works from Pechenik's group suggested that this is the result of gregarious settlement of larvae in response to cues associated with conspecific adults. In this study, we investigated the existence of larval metamorphic cues associated with adults of C. onyx, a slipper limpet introduced to Hong Kong from the U.S. in the 1970s, through a series of laboratory bioassays. The results showed that derived cues in adult C. onyx were waterborne and the waterborne cues were not derived from bacteria associated with the shell and soft body of the adult Crepidula. The natural biofilm also induced the larval metamorphosis of C. onyx. The cues from the biofilm were associated with the surface of the biofilm and were not waterborne. The aggregated distribution in nature of adult C. onyx may result from a selective larval settlement process. On a small scale in the water column near the conspecific adults, larvae of C. onyx initially detect the waterborne conspecific cues, which then lead to positive downward swimming or passive sinking. This activity increases the chances for larvae to make contact with the biofilm and to be exposed into the higher concentration of waterborne conspecific cues. This may eventually lead to the enhanced larval settlement pattern on or near the conspecific adults.

Ultrastructure of the Statocyst of Ototyphlonemertes pallida (Keferstein, 1862) (Nemertini)
Summary Ototyphlonemertes pallida (Keferstein, 1862) has two statocysts, which are situated just behind the dorsal ganglions on the elongations of the ventral ganglions. Each statocyst consists of one statolith chamber cell, some nerve cells and a number of covering cells and is surrounded by a thick basement membrane. Usually the statolith chamber cell encloses three statolith chambers, which are intercommunicated and surrounded by a double membrane. Each chamber contains a single mobile statolith. Cilia and ciliary structures are lacking. Within the dorsal part of the statocyst some very ramified nerve cells are situated, which form a nerve fibre. In the vicinity of the statolith chamber cell the nerve cells split up into synaptical plates with electric synapses; there are one or several synaptical plates at the level of each chamber. The statolith chamber cell is surrounded by numerous covering cells, which are connected by desmosomes and additionally linked together at the outside in the ventral part of the statocyst. With regard to their structure the covering cells differ greatly from the other cell types, and they do not participate in impulse perception and impulse conduction. There do not exist any closer morphological relations to the statocysts lacking cilia in Coelenterates, Turbellaria, Holothuria, Xenoturbella and Tunicata. The statocyst of O. pallida represents an indigenous structure within the Nemerteans.

During five rocket flights (TEXUS 18, 19, 21, 23 and 25), experiments were performed to investigate the behaviour of statoliths in rhizoids of the green alga Chara globularia Thuill. and in statocytes of cress (Lepidium sativum L.) roots, when the gravitational field changed to approx. 10–4 · g (i.e. microgravity) during the parabolic flight (lasting for 301–390 s) of the rockets. The position of statoliths was only slightly influenced by the conditions during launch, e.g. vibration, acceleration and rotation of the rocket. Within approx. 6 min of microgravity conditions the shape of the statolith complex in the rhizoids changed from a transversely oriented lens into a longitudinally oriented spindle. The center of the statolith complex moved approx. 14 m and 3.6 m in rhizoids and root statocytes, respectively, in the opposite direction to the originally acting gravity vector. The kinetics of statolith displacement in rhizoids demonstrate that the velocity was nearly constant under microgravity whereas it decreased remarkably after inversion of rhizoids on Earth. It can be concluded that on Earth the position of statoliths in both rhizoids and root statocytes depends on the balance of two forces, i.e. the gravitational force and the counteracting force mediated by microfilaments.Abbreviations ER endoplasmic reticulum - g 9.806 m · s–2 - MF microfilament - TEXUS Technologische Experimente unter Schwerelosigkeit (technological experiments under reduced gravity) Dedicated to Professor Wolfgang Haupt on the occasion of his 70th birthday  相似文献

The statocyst architecture in the three otoplanid species Notocaryoturbella bigermaria Lanfranchi, 1969, Otoplana truncaspina Lanfranchi, 1969 and Parotoplanella heterorhabditica Lanfranchi, 1969 is compared. Common features are: (a) a fibrillar collagen-like, 0.2 μm thick, investing capsule continuous with the brain capsule; (b) an inner wall made up of six or more flattened and overlapping parietal cells; (c) a statolith forming cell hanging from the dorsal side down in the lumen, with a large statolith containing vacuole; (d) a bilateral pair of spindle shaped accessory cell groups, adjoining the statolith cell and sending projections to the wall—nerve projections run through the capsule; (e) one accessory cell enveloping the other cells of the group has a filament containing cytoplasm, the filaments coverging into a hemidesmosome making contact with a projection coming from a parietal cell; (f) muscles from the longitudinal body musculature inserting onto the capsule externally. The lack of ciliary structures differentiates the turbellarian statocyst from the majority of invertebrate statocysts. The developmental origin, the phylogenetical meaning and the functional and adaptive value of the statocyst in Turbellaria are here commented on.  相似文献

The general fine-structural organization of statocysts in Catenulida, Nemertodermatida, Acoela, Proseriata, Lurus (Dalyellioida), and Xenoturbella are summarized. In lithophorous (statocyst-bearing) members of the Catenulida, the statocysts exhibit a few parietal cells and one or several movable statoliths within a spacious intracapsular cavity. Statocysts in the Nemertodermatida have several parietal cells and two lithocytes, each equipped with one statolith, whereas those of the other acoelomorphan taxon, the Acoela, always have two parietal cells and one movable lithocyte. The statocysts of lithophorous members of the Proseriata represent more sophisticated systems: each has two clusters of accessory cells in addition to several parietal cells and a voluminous lithocyte in which the statolith is movable. In catenulids and proseriates, processes of outer neurons penetrate the capsule of the statocyst, whereas such innervations have not been found in the Nemertodermatida and Acoela. I conclude that the different types of statocysts have evolved independently within the Plathelminthes. Xenoturbella displays an intraepidermal statocyst with many monociliary parietal cells and several mobile cells (lithocytes) within the central cavity of the statocyst. Each of these mobile cells carries a statolith-like structure and one prominent cilium. The statocyst of Xenoturbella does not correspond to any type of plathelminth statocyst.  相似文献

Caribbean species of Halimeda from the steep slopes of San Salvador Island, Bahamas, were collected along vertical transects between 25 and 255 m, on the northeast, northwest, west, southwest and south sides of the island, using the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution's submersible Johnson Sea Link I. The characteristics delineating species (segment and utricle size) were assessed for selected species, and the depth and western Atlantic distributions of the species reviewed. Halimeda copiosa was found to show a variation of surface utricle diameter with depth, with the deeper plants having 15% larger diameter utricles than the shallower plants. Of the seven species, one variety and one form of Halimeda studied from our submersible dive sites, H. copiosa, H. cryptica and H. gracilis grew to the greatest depths, from 120 to 150-m depths. H. lacrimosa var. globosa was found growing to 91 m, and H. tuna f. platydisca and H. discoidea to a depth of 73 m. Those of lesser depth, to 61 m, were H. goreauii, H. tuna f. tuna and H. lacrimosa var. lacrimosa. These represent substantial increases in depth distribution of the nine taxa found.  相似文献

The morphology of Pyrodinium bahamense south of Isla San José in the Gulf of California, Mexico was described using light and scanning electron microscopy. Morphological and dimensional examination of whole cells and thecal patterns were conducted to discriminate between P. bahamense var. compressum and P. bahamense var. bahamense. Microscopic examinations confirmed that specimens of P. bahamense from Isla San José are closely related to P. bahamense var. bahamense. The main average dimensions were: cells 41.9 μm long, 43.8 μm wide, 55.6 μm amplitude, apical horn 7.2 μm long, and the left antapical spine 19.5 μm long. The highest cell concentration was 240 cells l−1 and occurred with a bloom of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. The presence of this dinoflagellate off the east coast of the Baja California Peninsula had not been previously reported. Recently, P. bahamense from Florida tested positive for saxitoxins. Paralytic shellfish poisoning from this species has occurred in Mexican waters. Here, significant aspects of taxonomy, toxicology, life cycle, and ecology are discussed.  相似文献

Senna birostris previously included seven varieties distributed mostly above 2000 m, in the Andes, between the equator and 33°S. According to Irwin & Barneby,Senna birostris var.hookeriana was the only variety in Argentina, distributed from the Jujuy province to the San Luis province. New observations led us to identify two distinct entities that have gone under this taxon. The new variety,Senna birostris var.jallaguensis, is described from Argentina and illustrated herein and is compared toSenna birostris var.hookeriana s.str.  相似文献

Individuals of the deepwater squid Moro- teuthis ingens were obtained from New Zealand waters at depths between 500 and 1452 m. Depth distribution suggested that there was an ontogenetic migration to deeper water by females in association with maturity. Males did not show any clear pattern in their depth distribution. Statolith increment analysis was also undertaken to obtain putative age and life span information. Based on statolith age estimates, M. ingens appears to be predominantly an annual species with the oldest individuals aged at 358 and 393 days for males and females respectively. The form of growth over the size range sampled was linear with females having a growth rate almost twice that of males. Back-calculated hatching dates revealed a peak in hatching in the austral winter between June and August. Maturation in males was more closely related to size rather than age whereas in females the pattern in ovary growth in relation to both mantle length and age was similar. Late Holocene vegetation, climate and fire dynamics of mountain forest and paramo ecosystems, as well as human impact, are presented from the upper Rio San Francisco valley, southeastern Ecuadorian Andes. Palaeoenvironmental changes, inferred from three soil monoliths, spanning an altitudinal gradient between 1,990 and 3,200 m and the high resolution multi-proxy sediment record from Laguna Zurita (2,590 m), were investigated by pollen, spore and charcoal analyses, in combination with XRF- and magnetic susceptibility-scanning. Three of the four pollen records show a marked change in the floristic composition between ca. 900 and 350 cal b.p. (interpolated age). Past fires have strongly influenced the floristic composition of the mountain rainforest ecosystem. Frequent fires, together with the relatively high occurrence of grasses and some Zea mays plantations document past human activities in the upper Rio San Francisco valley. A large number of areas of probably ancient Z. mays cultivation in the upper Rio San Francisco valley has been identified, using GIS-based calculation. High occurrences of Cyperaceae and Isoetes indicate the development of marshy lake shores in response to a lower lake level at Laguna Zurita before ca. 700 cal b.p. The decrease of Isoetes and Cyperaceae after ca. 1200 cal b.p. reflects a lake level rise, due to increasing moisture and/or human activities.  相似文献

Abstract

The ichnospecies Nummipera eocenica occurs in thick-bedded, tabular bioclastic massive sandstone of the upper Eocene San Jacinto Formation in the San Jacinto Fold Belt Basin, Colombia. Nummipera eocenica is a vertical to oblique burrow locally displaying a conical shape. The lining structure of the specimens studied consists of uniformly distributed lepidocyclinids and operculinids, with tests typically dipping towards the burrow wall, and well-compacted lining. The burrow infill is identical to the host rock, a bioclastic sandstone with abundant bivalve fragments. The diagnosis of Nummipera is emended to include as components of burrow lining all representatives of the Subclass Rotaliana characterized by being lenticular to discoidal in shape. In the San Jacinto Formation, Nummipera eocenica is present in the transition between deltaic mouth-bar and carbonate platform deposits.  相似文献

Summary The statocyst of otoplanids is enveloped by a bipartite capsule which consists of two different extracellular matrices. This capsule encircles three different types of aciliary cells: several peripherally located flattened parietal cells, one central statolith forming cell (lithocyte) and two clusters of accessory cells. Intracapsular lumina exist which are different from extracapsular intercellular spaces. The accessory cells most probably represent those structures that are mainly involved in nervous conduction. These cells extend cytoplasmatic processes towards different peripheral regions of the statocyst where processes of outer nerve cells penetrate the capsule. The statocyst does not seem to represent a more evolved equilibrium receptor system but may function as a relatively simple aciliary sense organ suitable for positive geotactic behaviour. The otoplanid statocyst corresponds to statocysts in other lithophorous proseriates but not to statocysts in other taxa of the free-living Plathelminthes. The monophyly of a taxon Lithophora within the Proseriata is corroborated by this autapomorphic characteristic.Abbreviations ac accessory cell(s) - c capsule of the statocyst - ce cerebrum - ci cephalic intestine - co capsule opening - cp cell process(es) of accessory cell(s) and cell(s) containing filaments - ecm extracellular matrix - fc cell(s) containing filaments - ic intercellular spaces within the capsule - mc muscle cell(s) - n lobed nucleus of the lithocyte - nac nucleus (nuclei) of accessory cell(s) - nc nerve cell(s) - npc nucleus (nuclei) of parietal cell(s) - pc parietal cell(s) - s statolith - sc statolith cell (lithocyte)  相似文献
