An acetic-acid-based synthetic wastewater of different organic concentrations was successfully treated at 35 degrees C in anaerobic downflow fixed-film reactors operated at high organic loading rates and short hydraulic retention times (HRTs). Substrate removal and methane production rates close to theoretical values of complete volumetric chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and maximum methane conversion were obtained. A high concentration of biofilm biomass was retained in the reactor. Steady-state biofilm concentration increased with increased organic loading rate and decreased HRTs, reaching a maximum of 8.3 kg VFS/m(3) at a loading rate of 17 kg COD/m(3) day. Biofilm substrate utilization rates of up to 1.6 kg COD/kg VFS day were achieved. Soluble COD utilization rates at various COD concentrations can be described by half-order reaction kinetics.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of wastewater from a dimethyl terephthalate plant was studied in continuously stirred tank reactors with plastic net biomass support particles (BSP) at a level of 20% (v/v). The experimental results showed that the BSP system could treat the wastewater at a hydraulic retention time as low as 1.5 d, organic loading as high as 20 kg COD/m3/d and at acidic feed pH as low as 4.5 with 95% COD reduction and biogas production of about 8l/l/d, while the control system without support particles could not treat the wastewater above a 5-d hydraulic retention time, 5 kg COD/m3/d organic loading and a feed pH of 6.0. Thus, augmentation of BSP upgraded the performance of the conventional suspended growth system to an equivalent level to advanced reactors.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of wastewater from a distillery industry having very high COD (1,10,000-1,90,000 mg/L) and BOD (50,000-60,000 mg/L) was studied in a continuously fed, up flow fixed film column reactor using different support materials such as charcoal, coconut coir and nylon fibers under varying hydraulic retention time and organic loading rates. The seed consortium was prepared by enrichment with distillery spent wash in a conventional type reactor having working capacity of 3 L and was used for charging the anaerobic column reactor. Amongst the various support materials studied the reactor having coconut coir could treat distillery spent wash at 8d hydraulic retention time with organic loading rate of 23.25 kg COD m(-3)d(-1) leading to 64% COD reduction with biogas production of 7.2 m3 m(-3)d(-1) having high methane yield without any pretreatment or neutralization of the distillery spent wash. This study indicates fixed film biomethanation of distillery spent wash using coconut coir as the support material appears to be a cost effective and promising technology for mitigating the problems caused by distillery effluent.  相似文献

Two SBR reactors were set up to investigate the feasibility of aerobic granulation under the combined selection pressures of hydraulic shear force and substrate loading. Aerobic granulation was studied at superficial upflow air velocity of 3.2 and 2.4 cm/s under an organic loading rate (OLR) range of 6.0-15.0 kg COD/m3d. Good reactor performance and well granule characteristics were achieved in a wide OLR range from 6.0 high up to 15.0 kg COD/m3d at 3.2 cm/s. While under the velocity of 2.4 cm/s, stable operation was limited in the OLR range of 6.0-9.0 kg COD/m3d and failed to operate with granule deterioration under further higher OLRs. The optimal combination of hydrodynamic shear force and loading selection pressure was demonstrated to be an important factor that influence aerobic granulation and govern the granule characteristics and reactor performance.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to report on the physical characteristics of carrier material (perlite), biomass growth on the carrier material and the biogas production during an apparent steady state period in an inverse anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (IAFBR) for treating high strength organic wastewater. Before starting up the reactor, physical properties of the carrier material were determined. One millimeter diameter perlite particle is found to have a wet specific density of 295 kg/m(3) with specific surface area of 7.010 m(2)/g. This material has provided a good surface for biomass attachment and development. The biofilm concentration (in terms of attached volatile solids (AVS)) attached to carrier material was found to be 0.66 g(AVS)/g(solid). Most particles have been covered with a thin biofilm of uniform thickness. Once the inverse anaerobic fluidized bed system reached the steady state, the organic load was increased step wise by reducing hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 2 days to 0.16 day, while maintaining the constant feed of chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration. This system has achieved 84% COD removal and reached the biogas production of 13.22 l/l/d at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 35 kgCOD/m(3)/d.  相似文献

Removal of organic material from poultry slaughter wastewater as determined by changes in biological oxygen demand (BOD5) was investigated by adding three different types of inoculum combining cow manure, yeast extract or hydraulic residence time as variables with response vector of reduction of BOD5. In a 3-l reactors, a 95% removal of BOD5 from poultry slaughter wastewater was obtained with organic loading rates up to 31 kg BOD5 m(-3) d(-1) without loss of stability. This 95% removal was obtained between 25 and 39 degrees C with a hydraulic residence time between 3.5 and 4.5 h. The growth of the consortium of micro-organisms in the reactor followed a first-order kinetic with a constant specific growth rate of 0.054 h(-1). It was concluded that an inoculum from cow manure added with nutrients and yeast extract allowed a 95% removal of BOD5 from poultry slaughter wastewater at ambient temperatures within a hydraulic residence time of 4 h, sharply reducing possible environmental hazards.  相似文献

The effect of phenol on the biological treatment of wastewaters from a resin producing industry was analyzed in a pre-denitrification system. First, the effect of phenol overloads on the removal of organic matter and nitrogen compounds was studied. During the overloads (from 250 to 4000 mg/L), phenol was detected in the effluent of the anoxic reactor but the system recovered fast after stopping the overloads. The total organic carbon (TOC) removal remained unchanged during phenol addition (91.9% at 0.20 kg TOC/m3 d), except for the highest overload. With regard to total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), its mean removal (87.9% at 0.08 kg TKN/m3 d) was not affected by the phenol overloads. Afterwards, the effect of different phenol concentrations on the biological treatment of these wastewaters was analyzed. Phenol concentrations from 250 to 4000 mg/L were added to the feed. Phenol was completely removed despite the presence of other carbon sources in the wastewater. In spite of the presence of phenol, a TOC removal around 91.3% was achieved at an average organic loading rate of 0.11 kg TOC/m3 d. The mean applied nitrogen loading rates were 0.05 and 0.08 kg TKN/m3 d, obtaining TKN removals around 85.8% and 87.1%, respectively. Therefore, the biological treatment of wastewaters from a resin producing industry in a pre-denitrification system was not affected by the presence of phenol.  相似文献

In this study wastewaters of a sunflower oil factory in Elazig (Turkey) were investigated in a pilot-scale mesophilic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor by determination of removal of total lipids (TL) and fatty acids (FA). The removal efficiencies of TL and FA (linoleic, oleic, myristic, palmitic, stearic, arashidic, behenic and other FA) were above 70% at organic loading rates (OLR) between 1.6 and 7.8 kg COD/m(3)d and at optimum hydraulic retention times of 2.0 and 2.8 day. The conversion rate of removed COD to methane was between 0.16 and 0.354 m(3) CH(4)/kg COD.  相似文献

Two laboratory-scale anaerobic hybrid reactors, R1 and R2, treated low- (1 kg COD m-3) and high-strength (10 kg COD m-3) whey-based wastewaters, respectively, in a 500-day trial. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies of R1 averaged 70-80%, at organic loading rates of 0.5-1.3 kg COD m-3 day-1, between 20 and 12 degrees C. The COD removal efficiencies of R2 exceeded 90%, at organic loading rates up to 13.3 kg COD m-3 day-1, between 20 and 14 degrees C. Lowering the operating temperature of R2 to 12 degrees C resulted in a decrease in COD removal efficiency, to between 50% and 60%, and a disintegration of granular sludge. The decline in performance, and granule disintegration, was reversed by decreasing the organic loading rate of R2 to 6.6 kg m-3 day-1. Specific methanogenic activity profiles revealed mesophilic (37 degrees C) temperature optima for biomass in both reactors, even after 500 days of psychrophilic operation, although the development of psychrotolerance in the biomass was noted.  相似文献

Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) production by anaerobic fermentation of organic solid wastes was studied at laboratory scale. The influence of initial substrate concentration was evaluated on VFA production. Completely mixed reactors (0.9?l) were used at mesophilic temperature (35?°C). Food wastes had 43.8% Total Solids content. Three dilutions of substrate (1/25, 1/10 and 1/5) corresponding to 1.75%, 4.38% and 8.76% of Total Solids and five values of Organic Loading Rates: 2, 5, 10, 12.5 and 25?kg COD/m3?d were studied. It was found that substrate 1/10 led to 14?g VFA/l at a loading rate of 12.5?kg COD/m3?d and an hydraulic retention time of 3.7 d. The main VFA produced were especially acetate and butyrate. Substrate diluted 1/5 led to 26.1?g VFA/l at a loading of 5?kg COD/m3?d and an hydraulic retention time of 15.1 d, but biomass production was not optimal. In a second study, a cascade of three reactors was used. An effluent with 42?g VFA/l was obtained at steady-state conditions at a loading of 12.5?kg of COD/m3?d and an hydraulic retention time of 12.5?d. The distribution of VFA was the following: 36% of propionate, 34% of acetate and 22.5% of butyrate.  相似文献

The study was aimed at treating the complex, combined wastewater generated in Mangolpuri industrial cluster. It was considered as a low strength wastewater with respect to its organic content. Anaerobic treatment of this wastewater was studied using an anaerobic hybrid reactor (AHR) which combined the best features of both the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and anaerobic fluidized bed rector (AFBR). The performance of the reactor under different organic and hydraulic loading rates were studied. The COD removal reached 94% at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 2.08 kg COD m(-3)d(-1) at an hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6.0 h. The granules developed were characterized in terms of their diameter and terminal settling velocity.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to evaluate the feasibility of an inverse fluidized bed reactor for the anaerobic digestion of distillery effluent, with a carrier material that allows low energy requirements for fluidization, providing also a good surface for biomass attachment and development. Inverse fluidization particles having specific gravity less than one are carried out in the reactor. The carrier particles chosen for this study was perlite having specific surface area of 7.010 m2/g and low energy requirements for fluidization. Before starting up the reactor, physical properties of the carrier material were determined. One millimeter diameter perlite particle is found to have a wet specific density of 295 kg/m3. It was used for the treatment of distillery waste and performance studies were carried out for 65 days. Once the down flow anaerobic fluidized bed system reached the steady state, the organic load was increased step wise by reducing hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 2 days to 0.19 day, while maintaining the constant feed of chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration. Most particles have been covered with a thin biofilm of uniform thickness. This system achieved 84% COD removal at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 35 kg COD/m3/d.  相似文献

Harnessing solar energy to grow algal biomass on wastewater nutrients could provide a holistic solution to nutrient management problems on dairy farms. The production of algae from a portion of manure nutrients to replace high-protein feed supplements which are often imported (along with considerable nutrients) onto the farm could potentially link consumption and supply of on-farm nutrients. The objective of this research was to assess the ability of benthic freshwater algae to recover nutrients from dairy manure and to evaluate nutrient uptake rates and dry matter/crude protein yields in comparison to a conventional cropping system. Benthic algae growth chambers were operated in semi-batch mode by continuously recycling wastewater and adding manure inputs daily. Using total nitrogen (TN) loading rates of 0.64-1.03 g m(-2) d(-1), the dried algal yields were 5.3-5.5 g m(-2) d(-1). The dried algae contained 1.5-2.1% P and 4.9-7.1% N. At a TN loading rate of 1.03 g m(-2) d(-1), algal biomass contained 7.1% N compared to only 4.9% N at a TN loading rate of 0.64 g m(-2) d(-1). In the best case, algal biomass had a crude protein content of 44%, compared to a typical corn silage protein content of 7%. At a dry matter yield of 5.5 g m(-2) d(-1), this is equivalent to an annual N uptake rate of 1,430 kg ha(-1) yr(-1). Compared to a conventional corn/rye rotation, such benthic algae production rates would require 26% of the land area requirements for equivalent N uptake rates and 23% of the land area requirements on a P uptake basis. Combining conventional cropping systems with an algal treatment system could facilitate more efficient crop production and farm nutrient management, allowing dairy operations to be environmentally sustainable on fewer acres.  相似文献

A laboratory scale rotating biological contactor (RBC) predenitrification system incorporating anoxic and aerobic units was evaluated for the treatment of settled high-strength municipal wastewater. The system was operated under four recycle ratios (1, 2, 3 and 4) and loading rates of 38-182 gCOD/m(2)d and 0.22-14 gOxid-N/m(2)d on the anoxic unit and 3.4-18 gCOD/m(2)d and 0.24-1.8 gNH(4)-N/m(2)d on the aerobic. The average removal efficiency in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD(5)), total suspended solids (TSS) and total nitrogen (Total-N) was 82%, 86%, 63% and 54%; settling of the RBC effluent increased COD and TSS removal to 94% and 97%. An increase in hydraulic loading resulting from higher recirculation, had limited negative effect on organic removal but improved nitrogen removal, and in terms of Total-N removal efficiency increased up to a ratio of 3 and then decreased.  相似文献

In this study, performance of a lab-scale hybrid up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, treating a chemical synthesis-based pharmaceutical wastewater, was evaluated under different operating conditions. This study consisted of two experimental stages: first, acclimation to the pharmaceutical wastewater and second, determination of maximum loading capacity of the hybrid UASB reactor. Initially, the carbon source in the reactor feed came entirely from glucose, applied at an organic loading rate (OLR) 1 kg COD/m(3) d. The OLR was gradually step increased to 3 kg COD/m(3) d at which point the feed to the hybrid UASB reactor was progressively modified by introducing the pharmaceutical wastewater in blends with glucose, so that the wastewater contributed approximately 10%, 30%, 70%, and ultimately, 100% of the carbon (COD) to be treated. At the acclimation OLR of 3 kg COD/m(3) d the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 2 days. During this period of feed modification, the COD removal efficiencies of the anaerobic reactor were 99%, 96%, 91% and 85%, and specific methanogenic activities (SMA) were measured as 240, 230, 205 and 231 ml CH(4)/g TVS d, respectively. Following the acclimation period, the hybrid UASB reactor was fed with 100% (w/v) pharmaceutical wastewater up to an OLR of 9 kg COD/m(3) d in order to determine the maximum loading capacity achievable before reactor failure. At this OLR, the COD removal efficiency was 28%, and the SMA was measured as 170 ml CH(4)/g TVS d. The hybrid UASB reactor was found to be far more effective at an OLR of 8 kg COD/m(3) d with a COD removal efficiency of 72%. At this point, SMA value was 200 ml CH(4)/g TVS d. It was concluded that the hybrid UASB reactor could be a suitable alternative for the treatment of chemical synthesis-based pharmaceutical wastewater.  相似文献

The ability of an anaerobic hybrid reactor, treating coffee wastewater, to achieve a quick start-up was tested at pilot scale. The unacclimatized seed sludge used showed a low specific methanogenic activity of 26.47 g CH4 as chemical oxygen demand (COD)/kg volatile suspended solids (VSS) x day. This strongly limited the reactor performance. After a few days of operation, a COD removal of 77.2% was obtained at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 1.89 kg COD/m3 x day and a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 22 h. However, suddenly increasing OLR above 2.4 kg COD/m3 x day resulted in a deterioration in treatment efficiency. The reactor recovered from shock loads after shutdowns of 1 week. The hybrid design of the anaerobic reactor prevented the biomass from washing-out but gas clogging in the packing material was also observed. Wide variations in wastewater strength and flow rates prevented stable reactor operation in the short period of the study.  相似文献

Brewery wastewater was treated in a pilot-scale anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) in which a floating cover(@) was employed. Long time experiments showed that the reactor worked stably and effectively for COD removal and gas production. When the organic loading rate was controlled between 1.5 kg COD/m3 d and 5.0 kg COD/m(3)d, and hydraulic retention time one day, COD removal efficiency could reach more than 90%. Sludge granulation was achieved in the reactor in approximately 60 days, which is much less than the granulation time ever reported. In addition, high specific methanogenic activity (SMA) for formate was observed. The study suggests that the ASBR technology is a potential alternative for brewery wastewater treatment.  相似文献

This paper examines the effect of organic loading rate on the removal efficiency of COD and TOC anaerobic thermophilic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR) in the treatment of cutting-oil wastewater at different hydraulic retention time (HRT) conditions. The essays are development at laboratory scale using a porous support medium. The AFBR reactor was subjected to a programme of steady-state operation over a range of hydraulic retention times, HRTs, in the range 12-2h and organic loading rates, OLRs, between 11.9 and 51.3kgCOD/m(3)d. The highest efficiency was 95.9% for an OLR of 13kgCOD/m(3)d and HRT of 11h. Over an operating period of 92 days, an OLR of 51.3kgCOD/m(3)d was achieved with 67.1% COD removal efficiency (71.3% TOC) in the experimental AFBR reactor. Although the level of biogas generation was not high, the anaerobic fluidized bed technology provided significant advantages over the conventional physico-chemical treatment applied in the factory. The effluent had a better quality (lower organic loading) and it was possible to reuse it in different applications in the factory (e.g., irrigation of gardens). The biological treatment did not lead to the generation of oily sludge, which is considered as hazardous waste by legislation. Furthermore, a continuous stream is produced and this reduced the impact of large flows discharged 4-5 times per week to the urban collector and MWWTP (municipal wastewater treatment plant).  相似文献

A new hybrid reactor, the upflow blanket filter (UBF), which combined on open volume in the bottom two-thirds of the reactor for a sludge blanket and submerged plastic rings (Flexiring, Koch Inc., 235 m(2)/m(3)) in the upper one-third of the reactor volume, was studied. This UBF reactor was operated at 27 degrees C at loading rates varying from 5 to 51 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L d with soluble sugar wastewater (2500 mg COD/L). Maximum removal rates of 34 g COD/L d and CH(4) production rates of 7 vol/vol d [standard temperature and pressure (STP)] were obtained. The biomass activity was about 1.2 g COD/g volatile suspended solids per day. Conversion (based on effluent soluble COD) was over 93% with loading rates up to 26 g COD/L d. At higher loading rates conversion decreased rapidly. The packing was very efficient in retaining biomass.  相似文献

Treatment of a low strength complex wastewater of chemical oxygen demand (COD) around 500mg/L was studied in a 10L capacity laboratory scale anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR). It was operated at hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 20, 15, 10, 8 and 6h. Corresponding organic loading rates (OLRs) were 0.6, 0.8, 1.2, 1.5 and 2kg COD/m(3)d. At every HRT (or OLR), pseudo steady state (PSS) was achieved. Even at maximum OLR of 2kg COD/m(3)d, COD and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) removals exceeded 88%. Removal of particulate fraction of organics was found to be greater than soluble fraction. Compartment-wise studies of various parameters revealed that if the OLR was larger, the number of initial compartments played significant role in the removal of organics. The values of volatile fatty acids (VFA) demonstrated that hydrolysis and acidogenesis were the main biochemical activities in the initial few compartments. Based on the tracer studies, dead space in the ABR was found to range from 23% to 34%. The flow pattern in the ABR was classified as intermediate between plug flow and perfectly mixed flows. Observations from scanning electron micrographs (SEM) also suggested that distinct phase separation takes place in an ABR. Study of organic and hydraulic shock loads revealed that ABR was capable of sustaining the type of shock loads generally experienced at a sewage treatment plant (STP).  相似文献
