Water supply and day length were varied in cold hardiness studies of red osier dogwood plants (Cornus stolonifera Michx.). The frost killing temperature, the content and freezing of stem cortical tissue water along with soil moisture content and tension were evaluated. Seven days of water stress in long and short day photoperiod regimes caused a rapid decrease in soil moisture content and plant water potential. During the same period, the frost hardiness increased from −3 to −11 C. Further water stress treatment had little effect. Control plants in short days showed only a gradual decrease in plant water potential and only gradually increased in frost hardiness while control plants in long days were unchanged. Freezing studies using nuclear magnetic resonance showed that increased hardiness in water-stressed plants resulted from both an increased tolerance of freezing and an increased avoidance of freezing, the latter resulting from higher solute concentration in the tissue solutions. The short day controls also showed similar changes; however, the changes were smaller over the 21 days of the study.  相似文献

A decrease of protein, RNAs, and starch, and an increase of sugar were observed in 3-day water-stressed red osier dogwood plants (Cornus stolonifera Michx.) when the frost hardiness increased from −3 to −6 C. As the frost hardiness increased to −11 C after 7 days of treatment, the starch continuously decreased, however, the proteins and RNAs increased with a continuous increase of sugar. Further water stress treatment had little effect on the changes of these chemicals. Control plants in short days showed similar gradual biochemical changes in patterns. From the results of frost hardiness increases, the pattern of biochemical changes, and the mechanism of the increased freezing resistance, it appears that the water stress and short days accomplished essentially the same physiological end(s) in inducing frost hardiness in red-osier dogwood.  相似文献

Moderate water stress increases frost hardiness in many woody plants but little attention has been given to changes in hardiness after recovery from water stress. Tests were carried out to examine how much water stress-induced frost hardiness remained when plants were rewatered under different day length regimes. Red osier dogwood plants (Cornus stolonifera Michx.) were water-stressed at normal growing temperatures in long day (LD) or short day (SD) conditions, exposed to 6 nights of freezing temperatures, and then returned to normal growing conditions with full water supply. Water-stressed plants gained an additional 8 to 10 C of hardiness. The amount of freeze-induced hardiness in both stressed and control plants was not significant (approximately 2 C) and was not affected by photoperiod. When plants were kept in or transferred to LD, they lost nearly all of their water stress-induced hardiness within 7 days after rewatering. Water-stressed plants in SD lost the least amount of hardiness (5 C) when rewatered. In dogwood, water stress is an effective way to increase hardiness temporarily, but the photoperiod has a large effect on the retention of the acquired hardiness.  相似文献

The environmental control of cold acclimation in apple   总被引:9,自引:6,他引:3       下载免费PDF全文
The role of photoperiod and temperature in the cold acclimation of living Haralson apple (Pyrus malus L.) bark was studied in the autumn under field conditions in Minnesota. Whole trees, or different parts of the same tree, were exposed to either natural conditions, artifically lengthened days, or artificially warmed nights, or they were subjected to manual leaf removal. The results indicate that acclimation occurs in two stages which are induced by short days and frost (or low temperature), respectively. Leaves were stimulated by short days to produce translocatable substance(s) which promoted cold acclimation of the living bark. Leaves of plants grown under long days were the source of a translocatable substance(s) which inhibited acclimation. The second stage of hardiness, induced by frost (or low temperature), did not involve translocatable factors.  相似文献

The influence of short days and low temperature on the development of frost hardiness in seedlings of Scots pine (Pinus silvestris L.) and Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.], grown for 6 months in glasshouses and climate chambers, was investigated. The degree of hardiness was estimated by freezing the shoots of the seedlings to predetermined temperatures. After 8 weeks in a glasshouse the viability of the seedlings was determined by establishing bud flushing. The most effective climate for the development of frost hardiness was short days (SD) and low temperature (2°C); the next most effective was SD and room temperature (20°C). However, long days (LD) and low temperature also had a marked effect on the development of hardiness. A combination of 3 weeks’treatment with SD and 20°C, and 3 weeks with SD and 2°C gave the same results as 6 weeks with SD and 2°C. The results clearly demonstrate the importance of the photoperiod prior to low temperature for the development of frost hardiness. In conclusion both short days and low temperature induce frost hardiness development. Probably this occurs by initiation of different processes in the two cases. The degree of frost hardiness development appears to depend on the sum of these different processes and on the timing between them.  相似文献

Plasma membrane alterations in two tuber-bearing potato species during a 20-day cold acclimation period were investigated. Leaf-callus tissues of the frost-resistant Solanum acaule Hawkes `Oka 3878' and the frost-susceptible, commonly grown Solanum tuberosum `Red Pontiac,' were used. The former is a species that can be hardened after subjecting to the low temperature, and the latter does not harden. Samples for the electron microscopy were prepared from callus cultures after hardening at 2 C in the dark for 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 days. After 20 days acclimation, S. acaule increased in frost hardiness from −6 to − 9 C (killing temperature), whereas frost hardiness of S. tuberosum remained unchanged (killed at −3 C). Actually, after 15 days acclimation, a −9 C frost hardiness level in S. acaule callus cultures had been achieved.  相似文献

Suspension cultures of Pinus sylvestris L. (Provenance Södra Ydre) were used to determine frost hardiness after manipulating daylengths and temperatures. Frost hardiness was determined with the triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) reduction method. The cultures were able to acclimate and increase frost hardiness levels; both low temperature (2°C) and short day (8 h) treatments were used at the same time, but increased survival temperatures were not achieved when only one type of stimulus was used. Inasmuch as intact seedlings can be partially acclimated by a single type of stimulus, the results indicate that the organization of the cells to tissues plays a role for the hardening process in vivo.  相似文献

Environmental control of cold hardiness in woody plants   总被引:12,自引:10,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文
The development of cold hardiness in 2 woody plant species (Acer negundo and Viburnum plicatum tomentosum) was shown to be independent of the induction of bud dormancy. Substantial hardiness levels were obtained under controlled conditions with long days and certain low temperatures—without dormancy development as a prerequisite.

Low temperatures given during the dark period with long days induced hardiness to a level not significantly different from that of short days. Giving plants continuous 10° temperatures under long days forced plants to harden as if they were under short days, even though they were not dormant.

Development of hardiness was shown to be a photoperiodic response. Increasing weeks of short days, followed by a low temperature hardening period in darkness, brought about a progressive increase in hardiness. The short day stimulus could be reversed by long days. Following 6 weeks of short days, the rate of hardening in darkness at 5° was over twice that of plants previously exposed to long days.

For trees, the ability to obtain and maintain sufficient levels of frost hardiness in late autumn, winter and spring is crucial. We report that temperatures during dormancy induction influence bud set, frost hardiness, tolerance to cold storage, timing of bud burst and spring frost hardiness in seedlings of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.). Bud set occurred later in 12°C than in 21°C, and later in cool nights (7°C) than in constant temperature. One weekly frost night (−2.5°C) improved frost hardiness. Cool nights reduced frost hardiness early, but improved hardiness later during cold acclimation. Buds and stems were slightly hardier in 21°C than in 12°C, while needles were clearly hardier in 12°C. Cold daytime temperature, cool nights and one weekly frost night improved cold storability (0.7°C). Seedlings receiving high daytime temperatures burst buds later, and were less injured by light frost some days after bud burst.  相似文献

Adaptive traits in Picea abies (Norway spruce) progenies are influenced by the maternal temperatures during seed production. Here, we have extended these studies by testing the effects of maternal photoperiod and temperature on phenology and frost hardiness on progenies. Using eight phytotron rooms, seeds from three unrelated crosses were made in an environmental 2 x 2 factorial combination of long and short days and high and low temperatures. The progenies were then forced to cease growth rapidly at the end of the first growing season. An interactive memory effect was expressed the second growth season. Progenies from high temperature and short days, and from low temperatures and long days, started growth later in spring, ceased shoot growth later in summer, grew taller and were less frost hardy in the autumn than their full siblings from low temperatures and short days, and from high temperatures and long days. Norway spruce has developed a memory mechanism, regulating adaptive plasticity by photoperiod and temperature, which could counteract harmful effects of a rapidly changing climate.  相似文献

Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) exhibits strong ecotypic variation along altitudinal gradients in morphological traits, e.g. slenderness of crowns or arrangement of second-order branches. We were interested whether montane and lowland morphotypes differ in a key trait for the survival in cold environments, i.e. frost hardiness, and asked: (i) are montane morphotypes more resistant to frost damage and (ii) do they have a lower risk of frost damage by late frosts in spring than lowland morphotypes? We used the electrolyte leakage-method to measure frost hardiness on a monthly basis from October 2006 to May 2007 in stands of the montane and lowland morphotypes at Mt. Brocken in the Harz Mountains, Germany.LT50 (i.e. the temperature that results in 50% of maximum electrolyte leakage) was assessed by freezing treatments in a frost chamber and was significantly influenced by morphotype, month and minimum ambient temperatures. LT50 was significantly lower in the montane than in the lowland morphotype, with −107 °C and −49 °C, respectively. However, the interactions between morphotype with minimum ambient temperature or month were not significant. Thus, as frost hardiness of the two morphotypes responded to temperature in the same way, both morphotypes can be supposed to be exposed to the same risk of frost damage during hardening in autumn and dehardening in spring.  相似文献

The effect of different growth temperatures, of transfer between them, and of changes in outside temperature on frost hardiness and ATPase activity of Scotch pines (Pinus silvestris L.) were studied. Plants which had been grown in the greenhouse and transported to outside “remembered” something of their earlier growing circumstances during a long period. They differed from the plants continuously grown outside in the level of hardiness, although changes in temperature caused similar fluctuations in the hardiness of both groups. It is evident that two mechanisms are present, the one causing a long term determination of the level of frost hardiness obtainable, the other causing a short term adaption. The heavy particle ATPase activity as investigated below 20°C grouped itself according to the main temperature groups of the experiment. Above 30°C, the pretreatments had given rise to differences within the temperature groups. The level of the ATPase activity increased as the growing season came closer.  相似文献

The long day leaf as a source of cold hardiness inhibitors   总被引:6,自引:6,他引:0       下载免费PDF全文
Short photoperiods followed by low temperatures induced cold hardiness in Acer negundo, Viburnum plicatum tomentosum, and Weigela florida. Hardiness was also obtained under long days and natural fall temperatures if the leaves were removed, either manually or by low temperature. Similarly, removal of leaves from plants exposed to long days at 5° brought about an accelerated rate of hardening. These observations suggested the presence of a hardiness inhibitor in the leaves which was counteracted by short days or removal of the leaves.  相似文献

In mountain regions, topological differences on the microscale can strongly affect microclimate and may counteract the average effects of elevation, such as decreasing temperatures. While these interactions are well understood, their effect on plant adaptation is understudied. We investigated winter frost hardiness of Arabidopsis thaliana accessions originating from 13 sites along altitudinal gradients in the Southern Alps during three winters on an experimental field station on the Swabian Jura and compared levels of frost damage with the observed number of frost days and the lowest temperature in eight collection sites. We found that frost hardiness increased with elevation in a log‐linear fashion. This is consistent with adaptation to a higher frequency of frost conditions, but also indicates a decreasing rate of change in frost hardiness with increasing elevation. Moreover, the number of frost days measured with temperature loggers at the collection sites correlated much better with frost hardiness than the elevation of collection sites, suggesting that populations were adapted to their local microclimate. Notably, the variance in frost days across sites increased exponentially with elevation. Together, our results suggest that strong microclimate heterogeneity of high alpine environments can preserve functional genetic diversity among small populations. Synthesis: Here, we tested how plant populations differed in their adaptation to frost exposure along an elevation gradient and whether microsite temperatures improve the prediction of frost hardiness. We found that local temperatures, particularly the number of frost days, are a better predictor of the frost hardiness of plants than elevation. This reflects a substantial variance in frost frequency between sites at similar high elevations. We conclude that high mountain regions harbor microsites that differ in their local microclimate and thereby can preserve a high functional genetic diversity among them. Therefore, high mountain regions have the potential to function as a refugium in times of global change.  相似文献

Summary The nucleotide sequence and derived amino acid sequence of a cDNA clone (BLT4) for a low temperature induced barley gene were determined. This gene, together with a small family of related genes, was shown to reside on chromosome 3. The BLT4 clone has homology with genes in wheat and oats. Its expression was studied in oats and in barley doubled haploid lines segregating for spring/winter habit and for frost hardiness. These analyses show that elevated steady state levels of BLT4 mRNA are produced in shoot meristematic tissue after 3 days low positive temperature treatment. The low temperature response was found in all barley doubled haploid lines and was therefore not associated specifically with either the spring/winter habit or frost hardiness. Elevated levels of BLT4 mRNA were also seen in drought-stressed barley and it is likely that this is a gene encoding a low molecular weight protein that is responsive to dehydrative stresses, such as cold and drought. The EMBL accession number for BLT4 is X56547 H. vulgare cDNA  相似文献

Data on morphophysiological monitoring of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar Mironovskaya 808 grown in Hoagland and Arnon solution in a greenhouse and transferred to natural conditions in March–April 2004 with the mean daily temperature of 0.6 ± 0.7°C within the exposure period of 42 days are presented. Water content, dry weight of plants and their organs, frost hardiness of plants, degree of tissue damage by frost, CO2 metabolism (photosynthesis and respiration), concentrations of sugars in tissues and proportions between different sugar forms, and activities of soluble and insoluble acid and alkaline phosphatases were monitored. Monitoring was carried out for three experimental variants simulating different microclimatic conditions in spring: after snow melting (experiment I), under ice crust (experiment II), and under snow cover (experiment III). Plants in experiments III and II demonstrated a higher water content in tissues, lower frost hardiness, higher rates of biomass loss, lower concentration of sugars and lower di-to monosaccharide ratio in tissues, and higher total invertase activity, particularly, cell wall-associated acid invertase activity. The dark respiration rates at 0°C did not significantly differ between experimental variants. The photosynthetic capacity at this measurement temperature was maintained in all experimental variants being most pronounced in experiment II with the most intense photoinhibition under natural conditions. Comparison of experiments III and II with experiment I is used to discuss the negative effect of changes in certain microclimatic indices associated with global warming and leading to plant exhaustion and death from frost in spring.  相似文献

We examined the carry-over effects of ozone (O3) and/or water stress on leaf phenological characteristics and bud frost hardiness of Fagus crenata seedlings. Three-year-old seedlings were exposed to charcoal-filtered air or 60 nl l–1 O3, 7 h a day, from May to October 1999 in naturally-lit growth chambers. Half of the seedlings in each gas treatment received 250 ml of water at 3-day intervals (well-watered treatment), while the rest received 175 ml of water at the same intervals (water-stressed treatment). All the seedlings were moved from the growth chambers to an experimental field on October 1999, and grown until April 2000 under field conditions. The exposure to O3 during the growing season induced early leaf fall and reduction in leaf non-structural carbohydrates concentrations in the early autumn, as well as resulting in late bud break and reduction in the number of leaves per bud in the following spring. However, O3 did not affect bud frost hardiness in the following winter. On the contrary, water stress did not affect leaf phenological characteristics, leaf and bud non-structural carbohydrates concentrations and bud frost hardiness. There were no significant synergistic or antagonistic effects of O3 and water stress on leaf phenological characteristics, concentrations of leaf and bud non-structural carbohydrates and bud frost hardiness of the seedlings. These results show that the carry-over effects of O3 can be found on the phenological characteristics and leaf non-structural carbohydrates concentrations, although there are almost no carry-over effects of water stress on phenological characteristics and winter hardiness of the seedlings.  相似文献

The influence of short day and low temperature on cold acclimation of A. crispa (Ait.) Pursh, A. glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. and A. rubra Bong, was investigated. Two clones of each species originating from in vitro propagation were exposed to three daylength/temperature treatments. Periodically plantlets were exposed to controlled freezing temperature in order to evaluate their level of frost hardiness.
Short day (SD) and cold temperature (CT) and long day (LD) and cold temperature (CT) were the most effective treatments for the development of frost hardiness in shoots and roots of the three species tested. Short day (SD) and warm temperature (WT) induced a significant increase in hardiness in shoots of all three species. However, this treatment did not trigger root hardening. A. crispa was found to be the hardiest species followed by A. glutinosa and A. rubra . Intraspecific variation was observed between the two A. glutinosa clones. A glutinosa clone AG8, a Russian provenance, showed a greater freezing resistance than A. glutinosa clone AG2, a German provenance.  相似文献

Winter hardening in first-year black spruce (Picea mariana) seedlings   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Winter hardening of first-year black spruce [ Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.] seedlings was studied by assessing a number of morphological and physiological changes under three hardening regimes: 1) early removal (ER), in which seedlings were exposed to natural daylengths and low ambient temperatures outside. 2) extended greenhouse culture (EG), in which seedlings were exposed to natural daylengths and warm temperatures, and 3) short day (SD), in which seedlings were exposed to short daylengths and low ambient temperatures outside. Measurements included needle primordia initiation, embryonic shoot volume, terminal bud mitotic index, embryonic shoot average cell volume, and shoot tip frost hardiness. EG seedlings formed buds containing 4 times as many needle primordia as ER stock. Embryonic shoot volume increased with number of needle primordia initiated, until late in the hardening period, when significant reductions in meristem volumes of SD and EG stock were observed. Frost hardiness increased sooner in seedlings which set bud in response to short days, but SD treatment did not result in significantly greater frost hardiness at the end of the trial. Frost hardiness was correlated with mitotic index of the embryonic shoot. Cell size in the embryonic shoot declined in seedlings of all treatments during hardening, however, EG seedlings had significantly lower cell volumes by the end of the trial in comparison to ER and SD seedlings.  相似文献
