Melatonin is the main product of the pineal gland, and trace metals play a critical role in growth and development. The purpose of this study was to assess the serum zinc (Zn) and magnesium (Mg) levels in pinealec-tomized chicks and their possible interactions with the development of spinal deformity. Chicks were divided into two equal groups: unoperated controls (group M) and pinealectomized chicks (group N). Pinealectomies were performed at the age of 3 d. After 8 wk, serum Zn and Mg levels of 10 animals from each group were measured by spectrophotometric assay. The results of analyses were compared using the Mann-Whitney U-test. The correlation between serum Zn and Mg levels were assessed by Spearman's correlation. In this study, it was obvious that the serum Zn levels in group N were significantly lower than those in group M (2.8±0.10 vs 4.2±0.14 ppm; p<0.0005). In contrast, Mg levels in group N was high compared with the values in group M, although there was no significant difference (17.8±0.69 vs 15.7±0.85 ppm; p>0.05). In pinealectomized animals, serum Zn levels declined significantly while serum Mg levels increased, albeit insignificantly. Thus, there was a moderately positive but not statistically significant correlation between Mg and Zn levels in unoperated controls (r=0.273, p>0.05), whereas there was a negative but not statistically significant correlation between Zn and Mg levels in pinealectomized chicks (r=−0.115, p>0.05). In addition, the serum Mg to serum Zn ratio was significantly higher in group N than in the group M control (6.39±0.32 vs 3.75±0.22, respectively; p<0.001). From the results of the current study, it is clear that surgical pinealectomy in newly hatched Hybro Broiler chicks has a significant effect on serum Zn level. However, the serum Mg did not change significantly. Because serum Mg is not a good indicator of Mg status in chicks, it is speculated that other tissues, such as muscle or spine, might productively be explored as a more sensitive Mg biomarker for this model. The present study provides experimental evidence that serum trace metal levels might be affected in pinealectomized animals because of the lack of its main neurohormone melatonin.  相似文献

Quantitative analysis of the trace element content of human intervertebral discs (IVDs) is essential because it can identify specific enzymes or metabolites that may be related to human intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). The goal of this study was to assess the concentrations of copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), and calcium (Ca) in serum samples obtained from patients with IVDD in comparison to healthy volunteers (a control group). The study group consisted of 113 Caucasian patients qualified by a specialist neurosurgeon for microdiscectomy. The control group consisted of 113 healthy volunteers who met the eligibility criteria for blood donors. The examined clinical material was the serum samples obtained from both groups.Based on the quantitative analysis of selected elements, there were statistically significantly (p 0.05) higher concentrations of Cu (1180 μg/L±800 μg/L vs. 1230 μg/L±750 μg/L), Zn (790 μg/L±300 μg/L vs. 850 μg/L±200 μg/L), and Mg (21730 μg/L±4360 μg/L vs. 23820 μg/L±4990 μg/L) in the serum of healthy volunteers compared to those in the study group. In addition, statistically significant changes were not detected in the concentrations of any elements among either sex in either the study or control group or in their body mass index (BMI) values (p > 0.05). In the serum samples from the study group, the strongest relationships were noted between the concentrations of Zn and Pb (r = 0.61), Zn and P (r = 0.69), Zn and Ca (r = 0.84), Zn and Cu (r = 0.83), Mg and Ca (r = 0.74), and Ca and P (r = 0.98).It has been indicated that, above all, the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Ca, and Mg depend on the advancement of radiological changes, according to the Pfirrmann scale. However, no influence on pain intensity was found, depending on the concentration of the assessed elements.The analysis indicates that the determination of serum Cu, Zn, Ca, and Mg concentrations may have diagnostic significance in predicting the onset of lumbosacral IVDD. The predictive evaluation of changes in the concentrations of selected elements in patients with degenerative lumbar IVD lesions appears to be a promising, cost-effective strategy.  相似文献

Obesity is among the main contributing factors in the etiology of essential hypertension (EHT). Leptin, the product of the ob gene, is expressed mainly in adipose tissue. We examined the relationship between two trace elements, zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu), and leptin in patients with EHT (n=35) and normotensive (NT) controls (n=50) because leptin as well as Zn and Cu were reported to be associated with the pathophysiology of EHT. Plasma leptin levels were determined with a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was utilized to determine plasma Zn and Cu levels. There was a negative correlation between leptin and Zn, and the Zn/Cu ratio (r=−0.359, p<0.05; r=0.361, p<0.05, respectively) in pooled subjects. When subjects were divided based on the presence or absence of hypertension, there was a negative correlation between leptin and Zn (r=−0.375, p<0.05) as well as leptin and Zn/Cu ratio (r=−0.398, p<0.05) in NT subjects. Similar trends were observed when leptin/BMI (body mass index) levels were utilized. There was no significant correlations between levels of Cu and leptin or leptin/BMI. In conclusion, in addition to high leptin levels, Zn and the Zn/Cu ratio were lower in patients with EHT compared to NT controls.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to determine the serum concentration of trace elements of panic disorder patients and to find out the relationship between trace element levels and nutritional status or socio-economic factors. The study was conducted among 54 panic disorder patients and 52 healthy volunteers. Patients were recruited from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by random sampling. Serum trace element concentrations were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (for Mg, Zn, Ca, and Cu) as well as graphite furnace (for Mn). Data were analyzed by independent t test, Pearson’s correlation analysis, regression analysis, and ANOVA. The serum concentration of Mn, Zn, Ca, Cu, and Mg in panic disorder patients were 0.37 ± 0.30, 0.67 ± 0.20, 99.91 ± 15.15, 0.83 ± 0.23, and 21.14 ± 3.72 mg/L, while those were 0.4163 ± 0.2527, 0.86 ± 0.3, 106.6073 ± 18.6531, 0.8514 ± 0.3646, and 21.37 ± 2.03 mg/L in control subjects, respectively. The serum concentration of Zn decreased significantly (p = 0.001) in patient group. But the differences of the concentration of Mn, Ca, Cu, and Mg between patient and control group were not significant (p = 0.522, p = 0.065, p = 0.800, and p = 0.712, respectively). Socio-economic data reveal that most of the patients were very poor and middle aged. Mean BMIs of the control group (23.74 ± 2.71 kg/m2) and the patient group (22.62 ± 3.74 kg/m2) were within the normal range (18.5–25.0 kg/m2). There was no significant relationship between serum zinc level and BMI of patients (r = 0.038; p = 0.809). So the decreased level of serum zinc in panic disorder patients was not because of other reasons, but rather it may provide a prognostic tool for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.  相似文献

Measurement and monitoring of magnesium (Mg) are important to prevent the development of serious and potentially fatal complications in critically ill patients. Although ion-selective electrodes are available and earlier reports suggest that free ionized magnesium (iMg2+) is the most useful test to estimate Mg status, most clinical laboratories still only measure total Mg. To compare the relationship among iMg2+, total Mg, and albumin in serum, samples were collected from 48 consecutive patients admitted to an intensive care unit or a primary health center. The mean serum level of iMg2+ in 44 patients was 0.53 mmol/L, the total Mg was 0.06 mmol/L, and the albumin was 34.93 g/L. The correlation between iMg2+ and total Mg in serum was r=0.585; the correlation between iMg2+ and albumin in serum was r=378; and the correlation between total Mg and albumin in serum was r=0.340. The mean percent iMg2+ in relation to total Mg in serum was calculated to be 55% in the patient samples. The important level of biologically active iMg2+ was not reflected upon analysis of total Mg in 25% of consecutive patients. This report shows that the correlation of iMg2+ and total Mg is weak, not only in critically ill patients but also in patients in whom Mg status is inquired as a whole.  相似文献

Disc degeneration is a common clinical condition in which damaged discs cause chronic pain; however, a laboratory diagnosis method for its detection is not available. As circulating miRNAs have potential as biomarkers, their application in disc degeneration has not been explored. Here, we prepared serum miRNAs from a mouse disc degeneration model and performed miRNA‐Seq and quantitative PCR to characterize disc degeneration–associated miRNAs. We identified three miRNAs, including miR‐26a‐5p, miR‐122‐5p and miR‐215‐5p, undergoing perturbation during the pathogenesis of disc degeneration. Specifically, the levels of miR‐26a‐5p in the serum demonstrated steady increases in the model of disc degeneration, compared with those in the pre‐injury samples of younger age or compared with normal controls of the same age but without disc degeneration, whereas the miRNAs miR‐122‐5p and miR‐215‐5p exhibited lower expression in post‐injury samples than in their counterparts without the surgery. Moreover, we found that miR‐26a‐5p targets Smad1 expression, and Smad1 negatively regulates Vegfa expression in disc cells, and thus, miR‐26a‐5p promotes disc degeneration. In summary, we established a method that consistently profiles circulating miRNAs and identified multiple miRNAs as promising biomarkers for disc degeneration, among which miR‐26a‐5p enhances VEGF expression during disc degeneration through targeting Smad1 signalling.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) levels of aqueous humor, lens, and serum in nondiabetics and diabetics and to determine the effects of diabetes on Fe, Zn, and Cu contents in the lens. Fe, Zn, and Cu contents of aqueous humor, lens, and serum samples of 19 patients (9 nondiabetic patients with a mean age of 62.3±5.4 yr, and 10 diabetic patients with a mean age of 59.5±5.9 yr) were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry using a prospective study design. The lens levels of Cu in diabetic patients were significantly higher compared with nondiabetic patients (p=0.02); however; there was no difference in the other elements (Zn, Fe; p=0.28, p=0.74, respectively). The levels of Fe, Zn, and Cu in the aqueous humor and serum of diabetic patients were not found to be statistically significant when compared to nondiabetics (p=0.46, p=0.11, p=0.18, and p=0.22, p=0.43, p=0.72, respectively). These results demonstrate that increased Cu content of the lens presumably has a greater association with the development of lens opacification in diabetics than Zn and Fe content.  相似文献

The relationship between selected zinc (Zn) metabolism parameters, arterial blood pressure, age, and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in subjects of both sexes with mild primary arterial hypertension is presented in this study. The following parameters were measured: systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressure, total and ouabain-dependent efflux rate constants of Zn from lymphocytes, serum and lymphocyte Zn concentrations, serum aldosterone, angiotensin-converting enzyme, sodium and potassium concentrations, body mass index, and plasma rennin activity. When all subjects are taken into account, no significant age-related differences were found for serum Zn. If divided into men and women, negative (r=−0.39) and positive (r=0.34) correlations are observed, respectively. Lymphocyte Zn correlated negatively with age in the entire group (r=−0.55) and also for men (r=−0.54) and women (r=−0.57). The renin-agiotensin-aldosterone system parameters correlated with those of Zn metabolism only for women: plasma rennin activity with total Zn efflux from lymphocytes (r=−0.33) and with lymphocyte Zn (r=0.71); the angiotensin-converting enzyme with total Zn efflux from lymphocytes (r=−0.35), with the oubain-dependent Zn efflux from lymphocytes (r=−0.33) and with lymphocyte Zn (r=0.57); serum aldosterone with oubain-dependent Zn efflux from lymphocytes (r=−0.44) and with lymphocyte Zn (r=0.59). For the men, the only positive correlation was that of serum Zn and aldosterone (r=0.45). In all cases (men and women), there was no negative correlation between serum Zn and angiotensin-converting enzyme. In women, the diastolic blood pressure correlated negatively with total Zn efflux from lymphocytes (r=−0.39), oubain-dependent Zn efflux from lymphocytes (r=−0.49), and serum Zn (r=−0.46); systolic blood pressure correlated negatively with lymphocyte zinc (r=−0.38). In men, the systolic blood pressure had a negative correlation with lymphocyte zinc (r=−0.32), which was also true for the entire group (r=−0.34). These results clearly show gender-related differences in Zn metabolism and indicate the need for further research to elucidate the possible causes of this phenomenon not only for Zn but for other elements as well.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the status of plasma essential trace element selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) concentrations and the effect of these elements on oxidative status in patients with childhood asthma. Plasma Se, Mn, Cu, and Zn concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and Fe concentrations, malondialdehyde (MDA), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were determined by the colorimetric method. The plasma MDA/TAC ratio was calculated as an index of oxidative status. Plasma albumin levels were measured to determine nutritional status. Plasma Fe concentrations, MDA levels and the MDA/TAC ratio were significantly higher (p<0.001, p<0.001, and p<0.01, respectively) and Se and Mn concentrations and TAC were lower (p<0.01, p<0.05, and p<0.01, respectively) in patients when compared to the healthy subjects. Plasma Zn, Cu, and albumin levels were not found to be significantly different in patients and controls (p>0.05). There were positive relationships between plasma MDA and Fe (r=0.545, p<0.001) and TAC and Se (r=0.485, p<0.021), and a negative correlation between TAC and MDA values (r= −0.337, p<0.031) in patients with childhood asthma. However, there was no correlation between these trace elements and albumin content in patient groups. These observations suggest that increased Fe and decreased Se concentrations in patients with childhood asthma may be responsible for the oxidant/antioxidant imbalance.  相似文献

Imbalance of zinc and copper status has been hypothesized in human hypertension. A case-control study was carried out to elucidate the possible relationship between zinc and copper status and essential hypertension. Thirty-one subjects affected by mild stable hypertension, pharmacologically untreated, were investigated together with 31 normotensive controls individually matched for sex, age, and smoking habits. Zinc and copper in serum and urine were measured, and serum activities of alkaline phosphatase (AP), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu?Zn SOD), lysyl oxidase (LOX), and monoamine oxidase (MAO) were evaluated. No significant difference in serum and urine zinc and copper content as far as in serum activity of zinc (AP and LDH) or copper (Cu?Zn SOD, LOX, and MAO)-dependent enzymes was found between hypertensives and normotensives. Positive relationships were found in normotensives between serum and urine levels of zinc (r=0.577;p=0.001) and copper (r=0.394;p=0.028), and between serum copper and Cu?Zn SOD (r=0.534;p=0.002). In normotensives, diastolic blood pressure and serum zinc were positively related (r=0.370;p=0.041). In hypertensives, inverse correlations were observed between diastolic blood pressure and AP (r=?0.498;p=0.004) and Cu?Zn SOD (r=?0.452;p=0.011), and between systolic blood pressure and LOX (r=?0.385;p=0.033). Diastolic blood pressure was related to LDH inversely in hypertensives (r=?0.357;p=0.049) and positively in normotensives (r=0.457;p=0.010). In normotensives, diastolic blood pressure was inversely related with MAO (r=?0.360;p=0.046). These findings support the hypothesis that an imbalance of zinc and copper status might be involved in human hypertension.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the status of plasma essential trace elements selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and iron (Fe) concentrations and their related acute-phase proteins, ceruloplasmin (Cp), ferritin, transferrin (Tf), and albumin levels in patients with vivax malaria. Plasma Cu and Zn concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Se concentrations were determined by graphite furnace AAS. Fe, Cp, Tf, and albumin levels were determined by colorimetric methods. Plasma Se, Fe, and albumin levels were found to be significantly lower (p<0.01, p<0.001, and p<0.05, respectively) and Cu, Cp, and ferritin levels and Cu/Zn ratios were significantly higher (p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001, and p<0.05, respectively) in patients when compared with those of healthy subjects. Plasma, Tf, and Zn levels were not found to be significantly different (p>0.05) in patients and controls. There were positive important correlations between Cu and Cp (r=0.908, p<0.001), Zn and albumin (r=0.633, p<0.001), and negative correlations between Fe and ferritin content (r=−0.521, p<0.05) and Fe and Tf (r=−0.616, p<0.01) in the patients group. Our findings demonstrated that plasma essential trace elements Se, Cu, and Fe change, but these changes might be dependent on acute-phase proteins, which were regulated as a part of defense strategies of the organism, induced by hormonelike substances.  相似文献

It is thought that calcium and magnesium may be related to metabolic disorders such as obesity and metabolic syndrome; however, to date, there have been few studies investigating the association between serum calcium and magnesium levels and metabolic syndrome in middle-aged male adults. We aimed to investigate the association between serum calcium and magnesium levels and metabolic syndrome in Korean middle-aged male adults. Study subjects included 213 men aged 30∼60 years. MetS risk score is determined by adding the number of risk factors, waist circumference, triacylglyceride (TG), HDL cholesterol, glucose, and blood pressure (BP). The study population was divided into three groups according to the MetS risk score: group I (MetS risk score ≤1; n = 106), group II (MetS risk score = 2; n = 51), and group III (MetS risk score ≥3; n = 56). The serum Ca, according to increase of MetS risk score, was significantly higher (p < 0.001), and there was no significant difference in serum Mg concentration among the three groups. Subjects with high TG and high BP had higher serum calcium levels than those without such abnormalities. Subjects with higher glucose had lower serum magnesium levels than those without such abnormality. The correlation analysis indicated that the serum Ca had positive correlations with the MetS risk score (r = 0.1769, p < 0.01), serum TG (r = 0.2516, p < 0.001), and DBP (r = 0.2246, p < 0.01). The correlation analysis indicated that the serum Mg had an inverse relationship with serum glucose (r = −0.2404, p < 0.001). In conclusion, serum Ca had positive association with TG and BP, while serum Mg had negative association with serum glucose after adjusting age and BMI among the middle-aged Korean male adults.  相似文献

Essential hypertension (EH) is a major public health problem world over and in India. Recent data on EH in the population of Chandigarh (Union Territory and capital of Punjab and Haryana States of India) revealed that the prevalence of EH has become double in the last 30 years in the residents of Chandigarh (26.9 to 45.80% in the year 1968 and 2002). Zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), magnesium (Mg), and manganese (Mn) in the serum are considered important in maintaining the human hypertension. The high Zn intake was considered to increase the blood pressure (BP) and to affect the other mineral status in the body. Recent survey on the trace metal status of different vegetables in the State of Punjab around Chandigarh (India) revealed that Zn level is significantly higher (40 mg/kg or more in above ground vegetables and 120 mg/kg or above in underground vegetables) in underground water-irrigated vegetables, but the levels of Cu and Mg are within prescribed limit. The present study was conducted on Chandigarh population to evaluate the levels of Zn, Cu, Mg, and Mn in the blood and urine of normotensive (NT) control and hypertensive (HT) subjects matched with number, age and sex. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer studies revaluated that the levels of serum Zn, Mg, and Mn were significantly higher (p < 0.001), but the level of Cu was low in the HT subjects (BP = 160/93) compared to NT control (BP = 140/83). Higher levels of urinary Zn, Cu, Mg, and Mn were observed in the HT subject vs NT control (p < 0.001). Positive correlations were evaluated between the levels of serum Zn, Mg, and Mn vs systolic and diastolic pressures (DP and SP), respectively (r = 0.928, 0.863, 0.876, 0.808, 0.404, 0.326, p < 0.01), but negative and positive nonsignificant correlations between the serum Cu with SP and DP were recorded (r = −0.032, r = 0.024). Positive correlations were also evaluated between urinary levels of Zn, Cu, Mg, and Mn vs SP and DP (r = 0.718, 0.657, 0.750, 0.681, 0.630, 0.578, 0.516, 0.461, p < 0.01). Prevalence of essential hypertension may be due to higher Zn level in the food chain that makes the individuals vulnerable to other diseases over the time related to essential hypertension.  相似文献

Drug abuser patients (n = 104), age ranging from 19 to 42 years, were randomly recruited to investigate the serum levels of trace elements (Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mg), malondialdehyde (MDA), and immunoglobulin (IgG, IgA, and IgM) before and after clinical intervention. Control group also included 104 healthy individuals. Blood samples were analyzed for determining trace elements, MDA, and immunoglobulin using atomic absorption spectroscopy, Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy, and turbidimetry method, respectively. For serum level of Zn and Fe, the differences between the groups (before intervention, after intervention, and control) were not significant (p > 0.05). However, significant differences were found in serum copper levels between control group, drug abuser patients, and before and after intervention (p < 0.05). The concentration of Mg was found to be significantly higher (p = 0.007) in drug abuser patients than the controls, and after intervention, the level was restored to control value. A displacement of elemental homeostasis was observed in drug abuser patients compared to control, and it was improved after intervention. An increase in serum concentration of MDA was found in drug abuser patients compared to control subjects (p > 0.05) but was not statistically significant. After intervention, the concentration was restored to control value (p > 0.05). The serum concentrations of IgA and IgM were found to be significantly higher (p < 0.05) in drug abuser patients before intervention than the controls, and the level tended to be restored to control level after clinical intervention. Serum IgG level was found to be lower in drug abuser patients compared to controls and further declined significantly (p < 0.05) after intervention. These findings may suggest a possible imbalance in the levels of micronutrients, antioxidants, and immunoglobulin in drug abuser patients, which tend to be restored to control values after detoxification.  相似文献

Serum selenium levels were determined cross-sectionally in 57 HIV-infected patients who were classified according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) 1993 classification system. Mean serum selenium levels were lower in CDC stage II (58.7±12.2 μg/L;p<0.01;n=18) and stage III (47.6±11.3 μg/L;p<0.01;n=19) HIV-infected patients, than in healthy subjects (80.6±9.6 μg/L;n=48) and stage I patients (73.6±16.5 μg/L;n=20). Serum selenium levels were positively correlated with CD4 count, CD4/8 ratio, hematocrit, and serum albumin (r=0.42;r=0.39;r=0.48; andr=0.45;p<0.01, respectively) and inversely with serum levels of thymidine kinase (r=−0.49;p<0.01;n=49) and β2-microglobulin (r=−0.46;p<0.001;n=49). In addition, serum selenium levels in 20 randomly selected AIDS-free individuals (CDC I:n=10; CDC II:n=10) were inversely correlated with serum concentrations of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors (sTNFR) types I and II. There was no correlation with serum immuneglobulin A and total serum protein levels. The results show that the progressive deprivation of serum selenium in HIV-infection is associated with loss of CD4+-cells and with increased levels of markers of disease progression and inflammatory response.  相似文献

The concentrations of cadmium, lead, selenium, and zinc in blood and seminal plasma were determined in 76 Singapore males. Except for zinc, the concentrations were generally higher in blood than in seminal plasma (cadmium, 1.31 μg/L vs 0.61 μg/L; lead, 82.6 μg/L vs 12.4 μg/L, and selenium, 163.6 μg/L vs 71.5 μg/L). The mean concentration of zinc in seminal plasma was more than 30 times higher than in blood (202 mg/L vs 6.2 mg/L). Significant positive correlations were found between the concentrations in blood and seminal plasma for the two essential trace elements: selenium (r=0.45,p<0.001) and zinc (r=0.25,p<0.05). However, no relationships were found between the concentrations in blood and seminal plasma for two toxic metals (cadmium and lead). Significant inverse correlations were observed between Cd and Zn (r=−0.40,p<0.01), and Pb and Se (r=−0.32,p<0.05) in blood, whereas significant positive correlations were noted between Cd and Se (r=0.45,p<0.01), Cd and Zn (r=0.35,p<0.05), and Se and Zn (r=0.57,p<0.001) in seminal plasma. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the Toxoplasma gondii infection on the total content of the essential elements Zn and Mg levels. Plasma zinc and magnesium concentrations were measured in 158 patients whose anti-T gondii IgG antibodies were positive. Scores were obtained for the patients and their age- and sex-matched 82 sero-negative healthy controls. The mean concentration of Mg in blood was significantly lower in sero-positive patients than in their controls both in females (p<0.01) and males (p<0.01). The average Zn concentration in seropositive female patients was 0.72±0.2 mg/L and 0.65±0.1 mg/L in controls (p>0.05). The mean values of the Zn in blood were 1.00±0.3 mg/L in seropositive male patients and 0.84±0.2 in controls (p>0.05). No correlation could be demonstrated between age and mean values of Zn and Mg in both sero-positive females/males and controls (p>0.05). No significant correlation could be found between blood Zn and Mg levels in seropositive female/male patients and controls (p>0.05). Mg levels were found to be clearly decreased in the patients with chronic toxoplasmosis, whereas no change was observed in Zn levels.  相似文献

We investigated the possible correlation between the leptin concentration and the Zn/Cu ratio in the plasma of women with thyroid disorder. Forty women with hypothyroidism (n=20) or hypothyroidism (n=20) and 20 euthyroid controls were recruited. The results showed that the women with thyroid disorder (hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism) had higher plasma leptin concentrations than the normal controls (p<0.05). Moreover, the plasma leptin concentration had no correlation with plasma thyroid hormone levels in the separate groups, nor among all the participants considered together. A strong correlation (p<0.005) between leptin and adiposity was only observed in euthyroid women. Plasma values of Zn and Cu and the Zn/Cu ratio were not markedly different among women with altered thyroid status. However, a weak correlation (r=0.28, p=0.032) between leptin and the Zn/Cu ratio was found from the pooled data of all participants and retained after adjustment for adiposity. We suggest that there may exist an interaction between the plasma leptin level and thyroid hormone-induced abnormality for selected minerals.  相似文献

We have separated and quantified two new minor hemoglobins named HbA1d3a and HbA1d3b. The level of HbA1d3a was significantly higher in uremic than in non-uremic patients (3.00 ± 0.50% vs. 1.28 ± 0.26% of total hemoglobin). It correlated well with carbamylated hemoglobin (r=0.80, n=81, p<0.002) and with plasma urea concentration (r=0.78, n=81, p<0.002). These data and the electrospray ionization mass spectrometric analysis provide strong evidence that HbA1d3a is an α-chain modified by carbamylation. The HbA1d3b level in the diabetic patients was found to be 1.6-fold that in non-diabetic subjects (3.00 ± 0.49 vs. 1.90 ± 0.33). This was attributed to HbA1d3 modified by glycation. Indeed HbA1d3b correlated significantly with HbA1c (r=0.71, p<0.002) and with serum glucose level (r=0.62, p<0.002). These two new minor hemoglobins may serve as complements for the objective assessment of averagd long-term uremia and glycemia in uremic and diabetic patients.  相似文献

This study aims at determining possible association between serum magnesium (Mg) concentrations and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in elderly subjects. Subjects were 137 men and women aged 60 to 90 years, selected from among participants of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study after excluding those taking medications for hypertension and dyslipidemia. Serum Mg levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry and MetS was defined according to ATP III criteria. The overall prevalence of MetS was 43.8%. Among MetS components, only plasma glucose showed a negative correlation with serum Mg concentrations (r = −0.194, p = 0.024). Subjects with MetS had significantly lower serum Mg concentrations compared with non-MetS ones (2.09 ± 0.03 vs. 2.18 ± 0.03 mg/dL, p = 0.033) even after adjustments with MetS components except for hyperglycemia (2.04 ± 0.06 vs. 2.20 ± 0.05 mg/dL, p = 0.011). However, after adjustment for hyperglycemia per se or along with the other MetS components, the significant difference between serum Mg levels in subjects with and without MetS disappeared. In conclusion, serum Mg level is diminished in elderly subjects with MetS, and hyperglycemia may play dominant role in this decrease; however, the results do not clarify whether the low serum Mg level is a consequence of hyperglycemia or is a risk factor contributing to its development.  相似文献
