The dependence of the dynamic viscoelastic parameters of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), xanthan gum, and guar gum solutions on the angular frequency (ω) was compared with that of their viscosity (μ) on the shear rate (γ). In addition, the effect of these rheological properties on the maximum velocity through the pharynx, V max, as measured by the ultrasonic pulse Doppler method, was investigated. The CMC and guar gum solutions examined were taken as a dilute solution and a true polymer solution, respectively. The xanthan gum solution was taken as a weak gel above 0.5% and a true polymer solution below 0.2%. The maximum velocity, V max, of the thickener solutions correlated well with μ, the dynamic viscosity η′, and the complex viscosity η*, especially those measured at γ or ω of 20–30 s?1 (or rad/s) and above, suggesting that μ, η′, and η* are suitable indexes for care foods of the liquid type for dysphagic patients.  相似文献

Aqueous solutions of sodium caseinate and xanthan at pH 7 and containing 0.1 M NaCl, and their mixtures were investigated using dynamic light scattering. Sodium caseinate solutions showed a bimodal distribution of relaxation rates; with the aggregate peak distribution predominating. Xanthan solutions showed a single distribution at low concentrations (≤0.06 wt.%) and a bimodal distribution at higher concentrations. The sodium caseinate–xanthan mixture modes were independent of the total biopolymer concentration, and behaved as a superposition of sodium caseinate solution alone and xanthan solution alone. This indicates that there is no interaction between xanthan and sodium caseinate in the range of concentrations considered in this study.  相似文献

The use of entomopathogenic nematodes on cabbage leaves against larvae of the diamondback moth (DBM) Plutella xylostella requires the addition of formulation adjuvants to achieve satisfying control. Without adjuvants nematodes settle in the tank mix of backpack sprayers causing uneven distribution. The polymers arabic and guar gum, alginate and xanthan were used in concentrations between 0.05 and 0.3% to retard sedimentation of Steinernema carpocapsae. Arabic gum had no effect, guar gum prevented sedimentation at 0.3% but the effect dropped significantly at lower concentration. At 0.05%, xanthan prevented nematode sedimentation better than alginate. Deposition of nematodes on the leaves was significantly increased by the addition of any of the polymers. Spraying nematodes on leaves with an inclination of 45° without the addition of any formulation resulted in 70% run-off. Adding 0.2% alginate or xanthan reduced the losses to <20%. The use of a surfactant–polymer formulation significantly reduced defoliation by DBM larvae. Visual examinations provided evidence that nematodes are not ingested by DBM larvae. Invasion of S. carpocapsae is an active process via the anus. The function of the formulation is not to prolong nematode survival, but to provide environmental conditions which enable rapid invasion of the nematodes. Nematode performance was improved by selection of the best surfactant in combination with xanthan and by optimisation of the concentrations of the surfactant Rimulgan® and the polymer xanthan. The best control results were achieved with Rimulgan® at 0.3% together with 0.3% xanthan, causing DBM mortality of >90% at 80% relative humidity and >70% at 60%. The formulation lowered the LC50 from 12 to 1 nematode/larva. The viscosity of the surfactant–polymer formulations correlated well with nematode efficacy, prevention of sedimentation and adherence to the leave. This physical parameter can therefore be recommended for improvement of nematode formulations to be used for foliar application against DBM.  相似文献

The diffusivities of glucose and ethanol in cell-free and cell-occupied membranes of calcium alginate were measured in a diffusion cell. The lag time analysis was used. Diffusivities decreased with increasing alginate concentration and were comparable with those in water for a 2% alginate membrane. Glucose and ethanol concentrations had no effect on the respective diffusion coefficients. The ratio of ethanol diffusivity to glucose diffusivity in 2 and 4% alginate agreed closely with the inverse ratio of the hydrodynamic raii for the two molecules in water, indicating that the hydrodynamic theory of diffusion in liquids may be applicable to diffusion in dilute alginate gels. Also, the presence of 20% dead yeast cells had no effect on the diffusivities. The data reported can be used to study reaction and diffusion in immobilized cell reactors and cell physiology under immobilized conditions.  相似文献

Over 200 bacterial strains were selected for anaerobic growth at 50°C and extracellular polysaccharide production in a sucrose-mineral salts medium with NaNO3 and up to 10% NaCl. The predominant cell type was an encapsulated gram-positive, motile, facultative sporeforming rod similar to Bacillus species. Strain SP018 grew and produced the polysaccharide on a variety of substrates at salinities up to 12% NaCl. Good polymer production only occurred anaerobically and was optimal between 4 and 10% NaCl. The ethanol-precipitated SP018 polymer was a charged heteropolysaccharide that contained glucose, mannose, arabinose, ribose, and low levels of allose and glucosamine. The SP018 polymer showed pseudoplastic behavior, was resistant to shearing, and had a higher viscosity at dilute concentrations and at elevated temperatures than xanthan gum. High-ionic-strength solutions reversibly decreased the viscosity of SP018 polymer solutions. The bacterium and the associated polymer have many properties that make them potentially useful for in situ microbially enhanced oil recovery processes.  相似文献

The objectives were to characterize propranolol hydrochloride-loaded matrix tablets using guar gum, xanthan gum, and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) as rate-retarding polymers. Tablets were prepared by wet granulation using these polymers alone and in combination, and physical properties of the granules and tablets were studied. Drug release was evaluated in simulated gastric and intestinal media. Rugged tablets with appropriate physical properties were obtained. Empirical and semi-empirical models were fit to release data to elucidate release mechanisms. Guar gum alone was unable to control drug release until a 1:3 drug/gum ratio, where the release pattern matched a Higuchi profile. Matrix tablets incorporating HPMC provided near zero-order release over 12 h and erosion was a contributing mechanism. Combinations of HPMC with guar or xanthan gum resulted in a Higuchi release profile, revealing the dominance of the high viscosity gel formed by HPMC. As the single rate-retarding polymer, xanthan gum retarded release over 24 h and the Higuchi model best fit the data. When mixed with guar gum, at 10% or 20% xanthan levels, xanthan gum was unable to control release. However, tablets containing 30% guar gum and 30% xanthan gum behaved as if xanthan gum was the sole rate-retarding gum and drug was released by Fickian diffusion. Release profiles from certain tablets match 12-h literature profiles and the 24-h profile of Inderal® LA. The results confirm that guar gum, xanthan gum, and HPMC can be used for the successful preparation of sustained release oral propranolol hydrochoride tablets.  相似文献

The extensional properties of 2-hydroxypropyl ether guar gum solutions were investigated using a capillary breakup extensional rheometer (CaBER). Optimization of the geometric parameters of this device allowed for the measurement of the characteristic relaxation times and the apparent extensional viscosities of a series of dilute to semidilute guar gum solutions. The measured relaxation times were compared with predicted Zimm relaxation times, assuming that the hydrophobically modified guar was in a good solvent. Good agreement was found at low concentrations (0.01 wt % approximately 0.17 c*, where c* is the polymer overlap concentration), and this technique allowed for relaxation times on the order of 1 ms to be measured for solutions with shear viscosities of 2 mPa.s. Both the shear and (apparent) steady-state extensional viscosities of this set of industrially relevant fluids exhibited two regions of dependency on polymer concentration: linear up to concentrations of 0.2 wt % ( c/ c* approximately 3) and power law thereafter, where interchain interactions became significant. The extracted relaxation times followed the same trend (i.e., having a near linear dependency on concentration up to 0.2 wt % and a power-law dependency on concentration up to 9 c*). The results indicate that the transition from dilute to semidilute behavior occurs at a nominal concentration of approximately 3 c* instead of c*. The results presented suggest that interchain interactions for this modified guar are weak overall, and the solutions investigated are absent of entanglements over the whole range of frequencies and concentrations explored ((0.17-9) c*).  相似文献

A two‐part study determined the effectiveness of gum‐based rinses with or without oil for alleviating residuals of a bitter (0.8 g/L caffeine solution) and an astringent (1g/L alum solution) stimuli in serial responses using a sip and spit method. In Experiment 1, rinsing with deionized water was compared to rinsing with 0.3% xanthan gum in water alone or with 5% corn oil and 0.55% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in water alone or with 5% or 10% corn oil. The 0.3% xanthan gum and 5% corn oil mixture resulted in the highest stimulus intensity difference before and after rinsing, whereas 0.55% CMC had a value of nearly zero for residual effect. Results of a two‐alternative forced choice test used in Experiment 2 indicated that both were equally effective for reducing bitterness residuals, but 0.55% CMC solution resulted in the lowest (p=0.007) residual effect for astringency. Therefore, the 0.55% CMC rinse was considered an effective interstimulus rinse to use for assessing both bitterness and astringency in model solutions.  相似文献

A gel formulation containing carbendazim and triadimefon completely eradicated infection from scraped or unscraped cankers and none became re-infected. Paint formulations containing mercuric oxide or octhilinone completely eradicated infection from scraped cankers but 30–50% of unscraped cankers receiving these treatments became re-infected. Scraping alone encouraged callus tissue formation but did not greatly reduce infection. Fungicide moved from gels into the wood beneath cankers and persisted there for up to 6 months; movement of fungicide from mercuric oxide or octhilinone paints was minimal. Carbendazim was more effective than thiophanate-methyl and xanthan gum than sodium alginate or alginate ester as fungicide and gel component respectively. Rainfall shortly after treatment probably aided movement of fungicide from gels into the wood but salt formation, by incorporation of acid, did little to improve fungicide performance. Unequivocal assessment of efficacy of canker treatment requires data on canker area changes, movement and persistence of active ingredient in the wood and extent of re-infection after 12 months.  相似文献

The objective of present study was to develop a gastroretentive drug delivery system of propranolol hydrochloride. The biggest problem in oral drug delivery is low and erratic drug bioavailability. The ability of various polymers to retain the drug when used in different concentrations was investigated. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) K4 M, HPMC E 15 LV, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC; Klucel HF), xanthan gum, and sodium alginate (Keltose) were evaluated for their gel-forming abilities. One of the disadvantages in using propranolol is extensive first pass metabolism of drug and only 25% reaches systemic circulation. The bioavailability of propranolol increases in presence of food. Also, the absorption of various drugs such as propranolol through P-glycoprotein (P-gp) efflux transporter is low and erratic. The density of P-gp increases toward the distal part of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Therefore, it was decided to formulate floating tablet of propranolol so that it remains in the upper part of GIT for longer time. They were evaluated for physical properties, in vitro release as well as in vivo behavior. In preliminary trials, tablets formulated with HPC, sodium alginate, and HPMC E 15 LV failed to produce matrix of required strength, whereas formulation containing xanthan gum showed good drug retaining abilities but floating abilities were found to be poor. Finally, floating tablets were formulated with HPMC K4 M and HPC.  相似文献

Alginate gels formed by diffusion of calcium ions into solutions of sodium alginate were found to exhibit optical anisotropy depending on preparation conditions. When observed under crossed nicols, the anisotropic alginate gels showed a birefringence pattern which is characteristic of radial orientation of polymer chains. Calcium alginate gels were prepared from different concentrations of sodium alginate and calcium ion, and the conditions for formation of the anisotropic gels were determined. The gel-formation process was measured by monitoring the development of the birefringent layer and was compared with the model in which the diffusion of calcium ions dominates gel formation.  相似文献

A method for the wet extrusion of human plasma-derived fibronectin-fibrinogen cables is described. Solutions of fibronectin and fibrinogen with and without sodium alginate and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) are tested. The rheological properties of the protein solutions changed from Newtonian to shear thinning non-Newtonian in the presence of small quantities of these additives, the apparent viscosity increased, and the extrusion properties of the protein solutions improved. Cables were prepared using a capillary with a diameter of 1 mm and overall length of 18 mm. Cable diameter was reduced to about 0.5 mm by drawing using a series of rollers. Cables prepared with sodium alginate were found to have suitable properties, and those made with CMC were sticky and difficult to handle. Solutions containing no sodium alginate required a minimum total protein concentration of about 70 mg/mL for extrusion. Extruded cables were prepared with solutions containing 140 mg/mL total protein with 12.9 mg/mL alginate (high protein), and 46 mg/mL total protein with 47.6 mg/mL of sodium alginate (high alginate). The mechanical strength of the extruded cables was within the range suitable for application in tissue engineering. Extrusion of the protein solutions into cables was achieved in a coagulation bath. Cables with a mechanical strength of approximately 30 N/mm(2), suitable for wound repair and nerve regeneration applications, were prepared with a coagulation bath containing 0.25 M HCl, 2% CaCl(2) at a pH of <0.9. These cables also had a large average elongation at break of 52%, and showed an increase in cable length after breakage (permanent set) of 20%, demonstrating the potential for drawing the cables down to a fine diameter.  相似文献

Four paints containing mercuric oxide, octhilinone, thiophanate-methyl or triad-imefon and five gel formulations (carbendazim/triadimefon in sodium alginate or xanthan gum, carbendazim/triadimefon/hypophosphorous acid and thiophanate-methyl/oxycarboxin in xanthan or PP969/alginate) were tested on natural cankers caused by Nectria galligena on apple trees. Scraping cankers decreased their size 7–9 months later due to stimulation of callus formation, even where no fungicide was applied, and decreased perithecial, but not conidial production. Only the paints were applied to scraped cankers and that containing mercuric oxide was the most effective in decreasing canker size and restricting new canker growth. All formulations except the octhilinone paint were applied to unscraped cankers. Only mercuric oxide paint and acidic carbendazim/triadimefon/xanthan gel stimulated callus formation and only the former caused a decrease in canker size. Every treatment, except triadimefon paint and PP969/alginate, reduced conidial production. Bioassay with TV. galligena showed that the carbendazim and thiophanate-methyl gels achieved some movement of fungitoxicant into plant tissue.  相似文献

The purpose of this work is to design a rheological analogue to periprosthetic fluid, for potential use in wear testing of orthopaedic implants. Polymer solutions of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), xanthan and mixtures thereof were prepared, and the experimentally determined viscosity-shear rate dependence was analyzed using the three-parameter modified Cross model. A mixture containing 0.185 wt% CMC and 0.075 wt% xanthan was identified as being the closest rheological match for periprosthetic fluid in both steady shear and oscillatory modes of deformation.  相似文献

Xanthan gum is an important commercial polysaccharide produced by Xanthomonas species. In this study, xanthan production was investigated using a local isolate of Xanthomonas campestris MO-03 in medium containing various concentrations of chicken feather peptone (CFP) as an enhancer substrate. CFP was produced with a chemical process and its chemical composition was determined. The addition of CFP (1–8?g/l) increased the conversion of sugar to xanthan gum in comparison with the control medium, which did not contain additional supplements. The highest xanthan production (24.45?g/l) was found at the 6?g/l CFP containing control medium in 54?h. This value was 1.73 fold higher than that of control medium (14.12?g/l). Moreover, addition of CFP improved the composition of xanthan gum; the pyruvate content of xanthan was 3.86% (w/w), higher than that of the control (2.2%, w/w). The xanthan gum yield was also influenced by the type of organic nitrogen sources. As a conclusion, CFP was found to be a suitable substrate for xanthan gum production.  相似文献

Interactions between photoexcited riboflavin (RF), promoted by irradiation in the range of 310-800 nm, and alginate have been studied in air equilibrated aqueous solutions with the aid of rheological methods. Light irradiation of RF causes under aerobic conditions fragmentation of alginate and a decrease in the shear viscosity and other rheological parameters of its solutions. The decrease is most pronounced in concentrated polymer solutions. The photochemical degradation of alginate is inhibited in the presence of the quenchers/scavengers d-mannitol, glutathione, potassium iodide, and sodium azide and in excess oxygen. The addition of thiourea to alginate-RF solutions leads to enhanced degradation of the polymer. Significant shear-thinning effects and deviations from the Cox-Merz rule are observed at higher polymer concentrations.  相似文献

The purpose of this work was to investigate the viscoelastic properties of aqueous suspensions of crude collagen powder extracted from bovine hides and nonsubmitted to the hydrolysis reaction that leads to gelatin. The studied variables included the collagen concentration and the addition of xanthan gum or maltodextrin at varied concentrations during heating/cooling of the mixtures. Differential scanning calorimetry thermograms showed that the addition of polysaccharides decreased the endothermic peak areas observed at the denaturation temperature of collagen. The rheological properties of the pure collagen suspensions were highly dependent on concentration: 4% and 6% collagen suspensions presented a great increase in the storage modulus after heating/cooling, whereas for concentrations of 8% and 10% G′ decreased during heating and did not recover its original value after heating/cooling. The frequency sweeps showed that the thermal treatment was responsible by the strengthening of the interactions that formed the polymer network. Addition of 0.1% xanthan gum to collagen suspensions increased the gel strength, especially after heating/cooling of the system, whereas increasing gum concentration to 0.3% resulted in a weaker gel, which could indicate thermodynamic incompatibility between the biopolymers. Mixtures of collagen and maltodextrin resulted in more fluid structures than those obtained with pure collagen at the same collagen concentration and the range of temperatures in which these mixtures behaved as a gel decreased with increasing concentrations of both collagen and maltodextrin, suggesting incompatibilities between the biopolymers.  相似文献

Emulsions of 0.1 wt % corn oil-in-water containing oil droplets coated by beta-lactoglobulin (0.009 wt % beta-Lg, 5 mM phosphate buffer, pH 7.0) were prepared in the absence and presence of sodium alginate (0 or 0.004 wt %). The pH (3-7) and ionic strength (0-250 mM NaCl) of these emulsions were adjusted, and the particle charge, particle size, and creaming stability were measured. Alginate adsorbed to the beta-Lg-coated droplets from pH 3 to 6, which was attributed to electrostatic attraction between the anionic polymer and cationic patches on the droplet surfaces. Droplets coated by beta-Lg-alginate had better stability to flocculation than those coated by beta-Lg alone, especially around the isoelectric point of the adsorbed proteins and at low ionic strengths (< 100 mM NaCl). At pH 5, alginate molecules desorbed from the droplet surfaces at high salt concentrations due to weakening of the electrostatic attraction.  相似文献

Xanthan gum is a heteropolysaccharide synthesized by Xanthomonas campestris NRRL B-1459 and is composed of D -glucose, D -mannose, and D -glucuronic acid, in addition to acetic and pyruvic acids. Different amounts of pyruvic acid ketal are found in various preparations which can influence the viscosities of dilute xanthan solutions. Polysaccharide production on synthetic media was studied in small-scale fermentors. Fermentation conditions were established for production of both high and low pyruvic acid gums (about 4 and 2% pyruvic acid, respectively). Low nitrogen [0.1% (NH4)2HPO4] and air (0.25 vol/liter/min) levels favor production of low pyruvate gum; increasing (NH4)2HPO4 to 0.15%, adding K2HPO4, and increasing the air flow to 1.5 vol/liter/min favored production of normal gum. Both processes gave xanthan yields of 50 to 60%, based on 2.5% initial D -glucose substrate, in two to three days. Differences in pyruvic acid content and in the quantity of gum produced under a given set of conditions were attributed to strain variability. Substrains were isolated that have desirable characteristics for production of xanthan gum; i.e., the ability to give good yields of high-pyruvate gum when grown on both complex and synthetic media.  相似文献

The viscoelastic properties of Aeromonas (A) gum in water were investigated by using the Rheometric Scientific ARES controlled strain rheometer. An intrinsic viscosity of 8336 ml/g was obtained according to the Fuoss-Straus equation. The effect of salt concentration on intrinsic viscosity revealed that the A gum exists as semiflexible chain. Typical shear-thinning (pseudoplastic) behavior was observed at concentrations higher than 0.52%. The zero shear viscosity (eta(0)) increased with increasing polysaccharide concentration (c) showing a gradient of approximately 1.0, 2.9 and 4.8 in different concentration domains. The critical concentrations c* and c**, at which the transitions from a dilute solution of independently moving chains to semidilute and then concentrated domains occurred, were determined roughly to be 1.2% and 3.5%. The results from dynamic experiments revealed that the A gum solution shows characteristics of polymer solutions without any evidence of gel-like character. All the results from steady and dynamic tests suggest that the A gum is a non-gelling polysaccharide. The temperature dependence of apparent viscosity was described by Arrhenius equation and the flow activation energy was estimated to be 45.2 kJ/mol, which is independent on polymer concentration.  相似文献
