Synopsis We provided supplemental food for parental male smallmouth bass,Micropterus dolomieu, to determine if food supply limits the reproductive performance of nesting males as measured by care duration, reproductive success and survival of adult males. Although supplementing the diet of parental males had a positive effect on all three reproductive measures, the experiment generated contrasting results in different years. In the first year, supplemental feeding only improved the survival of fed males versus unfed males. In the second year, supplemental feeding increased care duration and reproductive success of fed males but reduced their survival relative to unfed males. Our supplemental feeding improved current or future measures of reproductive performance, but not both simultaneously. The results appear to demonstrate phenotypic plasticity in the extent to which energy from supplemental feeding can be allocated to present or future reproduction.  相似文献

We examined how hunger affected habitat use by juvenile smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu, as they moved among a variety of habitat patches. Hungry and satiated fish were placed in an artificial stream that contained three types of habitat patches: pools with uniform depth and low water velocities, mazes with uniform depth and moderate water velocities, and riffle-pool complexes with varying depth and the highest water velocities. Food was only available in the riffle-pool complexes. Hungry fish spent more time in the riffle-pool complex than satiated fish did. However, hungry and satiated fish did not differ in the time it took to exit the pool they were initially placed in, the number of patches entered, or the number of times they moved among patches. Both hungry and satiated fish frequently entered other patches after foraging successfully in the riffle-pool complexes. There was wide variation in foraging behavior among individuals in both treatment groups, and we consistently observed individuals that did not alter their foraging behavior in response to the difference in food availability among patches.  相似文献

Synopsis Suwannee bass,Micropterus notius, and largemouth bass,Micropterus salmoides, were collected by electrofishing in six habitats in the lower Santa Fe River, Florida during May 1981–March 1982. Both bass species were collected concomitantly in all habitats and habitat segregation was not evident. Crayfish (Procambarus spp.) were the primary food of Suwannee bass. Fish were the primary food of largemouth bass, but crayfish were common in the diet of largemouth bass ≥300 mm long. Suwannee bass have a greater throat width and consumed longer and wider forage than did largemouth bass of equal length. Available evidence suggests that Suwannee bass exhibit a positive selection for crayfish and a diverse forage resource, including abundant crayfish, is necessary for a Suwannee bass to coexist with a largemouth bass. Synopsis We compared survival, growth, and swimming performance of two size classes of age-0 largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, in the spring after being fed diets of bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus, fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas, or invertebrate prey during the winter. Regardless of prey assemblage, survival was uniformly high and independent of size. Length, wet- and dry-mass, and condition was also similar among treatments for both size classes. However, variation in individual performance differed, with the lowest variability in growth occurring among small age-0 largemouth bass in the invertebrate only treatment. Absolute and length corrected swimming speeds of largemouth bass were highest for invertebrate prey assemblages, intermediate for fathead minnow prey, and lowest for bluegill prey. The patterns in growth and spring swimming performance likely reflect the varied nutritive quality of different prey, the ability of largemouth bass to capture different prey, and competition with the piscine prey.  相似文献

Exotic species become invasive aliens when they have an adverse effect on the community of the recipient ecosystem, and their spread among closed water systems is of recent concern for the conservation of native biodiversity in Japan. Smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu Lacepède) is recognized as one of the worst 100 alien species, being undesirable because of its trophic level as a top predator. Smallmouth bass that have been illegally introduced into Lake Aoki, central Japan, in the 1990s for the purpose of sports fishing have seriously affected the lower trophic levels in the lake including fisheries resources, while a strong effort to remove them has proved to be limited in usefulness. We intended to identify indigenous agents that have a potential to control smallmouth bass in the lake. Snorkeling observations in the daytime revealed that Japanese dace (Tribolodon hakonensis Günther) intruded into smallmouth bass spawning nest as a school and were able to consume the eggs while the male bass was guarding the nest. Consequently, the proportion of lost eggs owing to the predation reached 92.4% per clutch on average, proving that native cyprinids are able to function as an efficient egg predator that reduces the survival of smallmouth bass. We consider that employing the indigenous egg predator can be a practical means to eradicate exotic smallmouth bass, combined with the removal of stones on the nest as a subsidiary step to expose smallmouth bass eggs to predation by Japanese dace.  相似文献

The effect of foraging by largemouth bass fry (Micropterus salmoides) upon invertebrates associated with aquatic macrophytes was determined using six 4 m2 exclosures in Cochran Lake, Michigan during June 1978. The cladoceranSida crystallina rapidly declined in exclosures with fry, but increased in control exclosures without fry. Chironomids and chydorids showed little change in the exclosures.Invertebrate populations and foraging by fry were also monitored in the lake during 1976 and 1979.Sida declined rapidly in June of both years. In 1979, a decline from 2.2 × 103 to 0.3 × 103 individuals per m2 and a sharp drop in the proportion of adults between 19 and 22 June coincided with the entry of a large school of fry into the study site on 19 June. Chironomids also declined during June of both years, while chydorids became increasingly abundant in mid-summer and showed no evidence of depletion by the fish.These results suggest that populations of certain prey, which are found locally in high densities in the littoral zone, may be highly susceptible to brief episodes of intense predation by fish fry.  相似文献

The foraging efficiency of juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis), feeding on two types of prey, was studied in laboratory experiments. Waterfleas (Daphnia magna) and phantom midge larvae (Chaoborus flavicans) were offered in a range of densities, either separately or combined. Perch fed more efficiently on each prey type separately than when both were mixed. Foraging efficiency decreased with an increase of mixed prey density with both prey types present in equal numbers, but also when the proportion of Chaoborus increased. This could be caused by the existence of different hunting techniques, each of which is fully efficient in the presence of one prey type only. In the presence of two prey types, the predator constantly has to switch from one hunting technique to another.  相似文献

We determined the effects of number of prey and the area over which they were distributed on the number of prey eaten and the production efficiency ofMetasyrphus corollae (F.) (formelySyrphus corollae F.) larvae. We hypothesized that, for a given number of prey offered per day, increased plant size would reduce foraging efficiency and production efficiency. Also, increased prey number was expected to increase production efficiency. Individual larvae were offered 10, 20, 40 or 60 pea aphids each day on plants with 7.5, 35 or 73 cm2 surface area. When more aphids were offered, larvae ofM. corollae killed more of them but left larger aphid carcasses. Foraging efficiency (percentage of available aphids eaten) declined as aphid abundance and plant size increased. Foraging costs were not decreased by increasing prey density and therefore production efficiency was not increased.
Résumé Les effets du nombre de proies et de la surface sur laquelle elles ont été distribuées, sur le nombre de proies mangées et sur le rendement de la production des larves deMetasyrphus corollae (F.) ont été déterminés. Nous avons supposé que, pour un nombre donné de proies offertes par jour, le rendement de la quête alimentaire et de la production diminueraient avec l'augmentation de la taille de la plante. Summary Selection might favor group foraging and social feeding when prey are distributed in patches that do not last long enough for a solitary individual to consume more than a small fraction of them (Pulliam and Millikan 1982; Pulliam and Caraco 1984). Here we considered the foraging behavior of a social spider, Anelosimus eximius, in light of this ephemeral resource hypothesis. This species builds large webs in which members cooperate to capture a wide variety of different sizes and types of prey, many of which are very large. The capture success of this species was very high across all prey sizes, presumably due to the fact that they foraged in groups. Group consumption times in natural colonies for all prey larger than five mm were less than the time that dead insects remained on the plastic sheets that we used as artificial webs. Solitary consumption estimates, calculated from the rate at which laboratory individuals extracted insect biomass while feeding, were the same as the residence times of insects on artificial webs in the field for insects between 6 and 15 mm in length and were significantly longer than the persistence of insects on plastic sheets for all larger insects. Large prey, that contribute substantially to colony energy supplies, appeared to be ephemeral resources for these spiders that could not be consumed by a single spider in the time they were available. These factors made the food intake of one spider in a group less sensitive to scavenging by others and could act to reinforce the social system of this species.  相似文献

Compared to terrestrial environments, grazing intensity on belowground plant parts may be particularly strong in aquatic environments, which may have great effects on plant-community structure. We observed that the submerged macrophyte, Potamogeton pectinatus, which mainly reproduces with tubers, often grows at intermediate water depth and that P. perfoliatus, which mainly reproduces with rhizomes and turions, grows in either shallow or deep water. One mechanism behind this distributional pattern may be that swans prefer to feed on P. pectinatus tubers at intermediate water depths. We hypothesised that when swans feed on tubers in the sediment, P. perfoliatus rhizomes and turions may be damaged by the uprooting, whereas the small round tubers of P. pectinatus that escaped herbivory may be more tolerant to this bioturbation. In spring 2000, we transplanted P. perfoliatus rhizomes into a P. pectinatus stand and followed growth in plots protected and unprotected, respectively, from bird foraging. Although swan foraging reduced tuber biomass in unprotected plots, leading to lower P. pectinatus density in spring 2001, this species grew well both in protected and unprotected plots later that summer. In contrast, swan grazing had a dramatic negative effect on P. perfoliatus that persisted throughout the summer of 2001, with close to no plants in the unprotected plots and high densities in the protected plots. Our results demonstrate that herbivorous waterbirds may play a crucial role in the distribution and prevalence of specific plant species. Furthermore, since their grazing benefitted their preferred food source, the interaction between swans and P. pectinatus may be classified as ecologically mutualistic.  相似文献

Synopsis The foraging ecology of two temperate marine gobies (Pisces: Gobiidae) was studied in rocky subtidal habitats off Santa Catalina Island, California. The bluebanded goby, Lythrypnus dalli, foraged from exposed ledges and fed on planktonic and benthic prey, although planktonic prey were more important in diets by number and weight. The more cryptic zebra goby, Lythrypnus zebra, remained hidden under rocks and in crevices feeding on benthic prey almost exclusively. The active selection of particular prey taxa from the two prey sources (water column and substratum), mediated by species-specific differences in foraging behavior, resulted in interspecific differences in type, number, size and weight of prey consumed. Interspecific differences in foraging ecology reflect the selection of prey most readily available to these fishes that occupy specific and fixed microhabitats within rocky reefs.  相似文献

Preferred deep body temperatures of adult bass were determined in the laboratory using a horizontal temperature gradient and telemetry. The method used allowed continuous monitoring of body temperatures of adult bass in the gradient. Community level effects of predation by two invertebrate predators, the opossum shrimp (Neomysis intermedia), and the larva of the phantom midge (Chaoborus flavicans) were studied and compared. N. intermedia appeared abundantly in the shallow eutrophic Lake Kasumigaura and had a significant impact on the zooplankton community. The predation pressure by Neomysis was highest on cladocerans, followed by rotifers, and finally copepods. At high densities (maximum nearly 20 000 individuals m–2), Neomysis excluded almost all cladocerans, rotifers and copepods from the lake.Zooplankton communities were established in experimental ponds, into which C. flavicans was introduced. The predator's density was around 1 individual l–1, and was probably controled by cannibalism. Although Chaoborus larvae feed on various zooplankton species, their predation impact on zooplankton populations was markedly selective. They eliminated medium- and small-sized cladocerans and calanoid copepods from the ponds, but rotifers increased.Although the feeding selectivities of Neomysis and Chaoborus individuals were similar, the predation effects on zooplankton communities by the two predators were different.  相似文献

We describe the behavioral interactions between honeydew-collecting workers of the ants Lasius nigerand Myrmica ruginodisand females of three species of aphidiid wasps (Lysiphlebus cardui, Lysiphlebus testaceipes, Trioxys angelicae)foraging for their aphid host, Aphis fabaessp. cirsiiacanthoidis,on thistles. Using field and laboratory experiments, we show that the ant-parasitoid interactions are species specific. Workers of both ant species generally attacked and killed females of T. angelicae,but they ignored those of L. cardui.This pattern was not altered when we anesthetized the wasps slightly with carbon dioxide to reduce their mobility. Prior contacts between L. carduiand either conspecific L. nigerfrom a different nest or workers of a different ant species (M. ruginodis)did not influence L. niger'snonaggressive behavior. The number of aphids parasitized by L. testaceipeswas significantly reduced in aphid colonies attended by L. niger,although this parasitoid was rarely attacked by ants. In encounters between these species of ants and wasps, ant aggression is consistent with differences in wasp behavior. We suggest that, in addition, chemical cues located in the cuticula may enable L. carduito avoid detection by honeydew-collecting ants.  相似文献

The interactions between invasive exotic and indigenous species can have profound harmful effects on the recipient community; however, not all such interactions are negative. Facilitation is increasingly recognised as important in shaping natural communities and is believed to vary under different conditions. Earlier studies have shown that the indigenous intertidal mussel Perna perna initially facilitates survival of the invasive Mytilus galloprovincialis in the low mussel zone by providing protection against waves, but later excludes M. galloprovincialis through interference competition for space. Here, we examined interactions between these species in the mid and upper mussel zones, moving mussels to experimental plots in different combinations of densities and species. Mussels were left on the shore for more than a year and treatment effects on mortality, shell length and condition were compared. In the high zone, treatment had no effects and P. perna showed greater mortality than M. galloprovincialis, indicating that its exclusion from the high shore is due to emersion stress. In the mid zone, treatment had no significant effects on M. galloprovincialis, but multiple comparisons among treatments involving P. perna showed that facilitation occurred. P. perna survived better at higher densities, but survived even better when mixed with the physiologically more tolerant M. galloprovincialis. Length data indicated both inter- and intraspecific competition for P. perna in the mid zone. Whereas facilitation occurs strongly in the low zone (P. perna facilitates M. galloprovincialis) and weakly in the mid zone (M. galloprovincialis facilitates P. perna), the lack of facilitation in the high zone suggests that the probability of facilitation is not linearly linked to increasing physical stress. Instead it is likely to be hump shaped: relatively unimportant under conditions that are benign for a particular species, significant under more severe conditions, and overridden by physical stress under very harsh conditions.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of polyphagous predators may often reflect the integration of aggregative responses to local densities of multiple species of prey, and as such may have consequences for the indirect linkages among the prey sharing these predators. In a factorial field experiment in which we manipulated local prey densities within a field of alfalfa in Utah (USA), we tested whether aphidophagous ladybirds would aggregate not only in response to their primary aphid prey, but also in response to an abundant alternative prey, the alfalfa weevil (Hypera postica [Gyllenhal]). Native North American ladybirds (primarily Hippodamia convergens Guerin and H. quinquesignata quinquesignata [Kirby]) responded only to spatial variation in aphid density. In contrast, the introduced ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata L., aggregated also at local concentrations of the weevil late in the experiment when weevil density was high and aphid density was relatively low throughout all experimental plots. The results support the hypothesis that C. septempunctata is more responsive than are native ladybirds to the availability of alternative prey in alfalfa, which may account in part for the displacement of native ladybirds from alfalfa by the introduced species as aphid numbers have declined. The differing responses of the native and introduced ladybirds to spatial patterns of the alternative prey underscore the importance of extending the study of predator aggregation to understand better how polyphagous predators distribute themselves in response to spatial patterns of multiple species of potential prey.  相似文献

Interactions between different size classes of predator species have the potential to influence survival of prey species in intraguild predation (IGP) systems, but few studies test for these effects. Using a substitutive design in a field setting, I measured the effects of two size classes of IG predators (large and small larvae of the dragonfly Anax junius) on the mortality of IG prey (larvae of the dragonfly Pachydiplax longipennis). I also examined whether combinations of large A. junius and P. longipennis and small A. junius and P. longipennis had substitutable effects on shared prey (larvae of the damselfly Ischnura verticalis). The presence of both size classes of A. junius, when alone and in combination with P. longipennis, significantly increased mortality of I. verticalis. In the presence of P. longipennis, large and small A. junius had similar effects on the mortality of I. verticalis, and effects of size-structured assemblages of A. junius were similar to the effects of each size class alone at the same density. The effects of the two size classes of A. junius on P. longipennis differed, and P. longipennis mortality was lower when exposed to size structured assemblages of A. junius than when exposed to only large A. junius at the same density. Results were similar to those in a laboratory study, although the effect of P. longipennis on I. verticalis was much lower in the field setting. These results demonstrate that interactions between different size classes of IG predators promote the survival of IG prey and highlight the importance of within-species size structure as a characteristic that may promote the coexistence of predators in IGP systems.  相似文献

The hypoxia tolerance of larval and juvenile round crucian carp, Carassius auratus grandoculis, and largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, was determined using respirometry to examine the potential of hypoxic areas in the macrophyte zone as physiological refugia for round crucian carp. The tolerance, which was measured as the critical oxygen concentration (Pc), was 1.32 mg O2/l in the round crucian carp and 1.93 mg O2/l in the largemouth bass. As the round crucian carp tolerated hypoxia better than the largemouth bass, hypoxic areas in the macrophyte zone might function as physiological refugia for round crucian carp.  相似文献

Hydrological variables have influenced fish recruitment in lakes, reservoirs and rivers. We evaluated how annual and seasonal hydrological variables were related to year-class strength (i.e., residuals from catch curves) of sportfish across eight Florida waterbodies (four rivers and four lakes). Multiple regression equations computed for black bass Micropterus spp. were combined across rivers and year-class strength was negatively related to spring median flow rates and in some cases positively related to winter median flow rates (all p0.10). Conversely, Lepomis spp. residuals combined from the rivers indicated that year-class strength was positively related to median flow rates in the fall prior to spawning and negatively related to post-spawn fall median flow rates (all p0.10). Fish recruitment combined across lakes were not related to water levels in this study, although within lake relationships did occur in some instances. Ecological implications of this work include regulations such as minimum flows and levels (MFLs) regarding sportfish species. Impacts of hydrology on year-class strength of sportfish were stronger in rivers than in lakes for these Florida systems. High flows at least once every 3years in the fall may allow inundation of floodplain habitat, providing favorable environmental conditions for Lepomis spp. reproduction. Setting MFLs during periods of drought (i.e., 3years or more) should consider impacts to short-lived species such as Lepomis spp.  相似文献
