The authors studied Schmidt-Lantermann incisures in myelinated fibres of the guinea pig sciatic nerve. Incisures of different shapes were observed and described in longitudinal sections; some of them were simply shaped, but others had a very intricate form. It is assumed that the atypical, intricate forms are complete incisures which change course and acquire a complex shape in longitudinal sections. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe the morphology of the whole lymphatic way: from capillaries to thoracic duct including cisterna chili using scanning electron microscopy and Evan's technique. We observed the lymph vascular wall that is: the endothelial surface, the muscular layer and the adventitial one. All these vessels were covered by an endothelial surface, with raised nuclei and long cell axes oriented parallel to the direction of flow. The borders between adjacent endothelial cell were often seen and open junctions were noted in lymphatic capillaries. The technique we used, permitted the removal of connective tissue by HC1 hydrolysis, so that smooth muscle cells could be examined. The latter showed a great variety of aspects and a very irregular course. The adventitial layer was thin in capillaries and became complex in thoracic duct where collagen fibers and connective elements were seen. 相似文献

Summary Changes in the proximal stump of axons of divided rat sciatic nerves in the first 6 weeks after nerve section were studied, particularly in terms of alterations in the organelle content, axoplasmic ultrastructure and the diameter of the axons. A variety of organelle types were observed; quasi-membranous structures, multivesicular bodies, dense bodies, vesicles and tubules, dense cored vesicles and alveolate vesicles: their identification and the functional implications of their presence are discussed. Alterations in the ultrastructure of the stained elements of the axoplasm are described. Axons containing excess organelles were divided into classes, comprising myelinated axons; and supergiant, giant and conventional non-myelinated axons. Temporal changes in these axons are described. The characteristics of the various classes of apparently non-myelinated axon are considered in terms of their identification as regenerating terminal sprouts of myelinated axons, segmentally demyelinated axons, sections through abnormal nodes of Ranvier or merely non-myelinated axons. The structure of axons in regenerating units is described. Changes in the neurofilament microtubule ratio of small axons without excess organelles are demonstrated, and spiralling of neurofilaments in some myelinated and non-myelinated axons with normal axoplasmic ultrastructure is illustrated and discussed.Medical Research Council Scholar.McLoughlin Fellow.The authors have great pleasure in acknowledging the expert technical assistance of Mrs. Frances Burton. A population of catecholamine-containing cells, broadly belonging to the class of small intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells, was observed in the ganglionated plexus and around blood vessels of the guinea pig gallbladder. Their morphological features were studied by fluorescence and electron microscopy. Some cells were closely associated with ganglion neurons within the ganglionated plexus. Others were clustered into small groups located along blood vessels. Counts carried out on the whole gallbladder showed that these cells varied greatly in number between individuals and that they were most numerous shortly after birth (on average 230 cells). The innervation of the guinea pig spleen was investigated by electron microscopy. Unmyelinated nerve fibers in the capsulotrabecular and arterial systems were found to contain large and small granular and small agranular synaptic vesicles in their terminals and are thought to be sympathetic adrenergic in nature. They influence the contraction of the smooth muscle cells by diffusion innervation in these systems. These nerve terminals were also scattered in both the red and the white pulp. Pulp nerves wrapped by Schwann cells were further enclosed by myofibroblastic reticular cells. This condition revealed that the pulp nerves pass through the connective-tissue spaces of the reticular fibers, which contain elastic fibers, collagenous fibrils, and lamina densa-like materials of the usual basement laminae. One of the target cells for the pulp nerves is considered to be the myofibroblastic reticular cell in the reticular meshwork. Neurotransmitter substances released from the naked adrenergic nerve terminals travel through the reticular fibers and may play a role, by both close association innervation and diffusion innervation, in the contraction of reticular cells to expose the reticular fibers. At the exposed sides, connective-tissue elements of the reticular fibers are bathed with blood plasma, and the included naked nerve terminals, devoid of Schwann cells but with basement laminae of these cells, face free cells at some distance or are in close association with free cells, especially lymphocytes, macrophages, and plasma cells. The close ultrastructural relationship between the naked adrenergic nerve terminals and immunocytes strongly suggests that there is an intimate relationship between the immune system and the sympathetic nervous system through both close association innervation and diffusion innervation. Thus splenic adrenergic nerves of the guinea pig may play a triple role in 1) contraction of smooth muscle cells to regulate blood flow in the organ, 2) induction of the exposure of reticular fibers by contraction of the reticular cells in order to form a close relationship of the nerve terminals with the immunocytes, and 3) subsequent neuroimmunomodulation of the immunocytes. 相似文献

Summary The hippocampal region of the rat has been studied with the histochemical fluorescence method for demonstration of catecholamines and 5-hydroxytryptamine. Noradrenalin nerve terminals of characteristic appearance were observed throughout the region, but the density of the terminals in the various areas differed considerably. The highest amount of terminals were seen in the hilus of the area dentata of the rat. Otherwise, noradrenalin nerve terminals constitute a small percentage of the afferents to the hippocampal region. Noticeable differences existed between rat and guinea-pig. In both species there was a conspicuous lack of stratification and delineation of areas as compared with the pictures seen with most other methods, which have revealed precise architectonic patterns.Supported by a Research Grant (12X-715-02) from the Swedish Medical Research council and by a Grant from Stiftelsen M. An in vitro comparative study on the reactivation of nerve agent-inhibited guinea pig and human acetylcholinesterases by oximes 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The reactivation of nerve agent-inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AChE) by oxime is the most important step in the treatment of nerve agent poisoning. Since the evaluation of nerve agent antidotes cannot be conducted in humans, results from animal experiments are extrapolated to humans. Guinea pig is one of the animal models that is frequently used for conducting nerve agent antidote evaluations. Several investigations have demonstrated that the efficacy of an oxime primarily depends on its ability to reactivate nerve agent-inhibited AChE. If the in vitro oxime reactivation of nerve agent-inhibited animal AChE is similar to that of human AChE, it is likely that the results of an in vivo animal study will reliably extrapolate to humans. Therefore, the goal of this study was to compare the reactivation of guinea pig and human AChEs inhibited by six different G and V type nerve agents. Reactivation kinetic studies with five mono- and bis-pyridinium oximes showed that oxime reactivation of nerve agent-inhibited human AChE in most cases was faster than guinea pig AChE. The most significant enhancement was observed in the reactivation of human AChE inhibited by nerve agents containing bulky side chains GF, GD, and VR, by H-series oximes HLo-7, HI-6, and ICD-585. In these cases, species-related differences observed between the two AChEs, based on the second-order reactivation rate constants, were 90- to over 400-fold. On the other hand, less than 3-fold differences were observed in the rates of aging of nerve agent-inhibited guinea pig and human AChEs. These results suggest that the remarkable species-related differences observed in the reactivation of nerve agent-inhibited guinea pig and human AChEs were not due to differences in the rates of aging. These results also suggest that guinea pig may not be an appropriate animal model for the in vivo evaluation of oxime therapy. 相似文献

The effects on spontaneous ovulation associated with the unilateral or bilateral sectioning of the superior ovarian nerves
(SON) were analyzed in guinea pigs at different time intervals of the estrous cycle. Day 1 of the estrous cycle was defined
as the day when the animal presents complete loss of the vaginal membrane (open vagina). Subsequent phases of the cycle were
determined by counting the days after Day 1. All animals were autopsied on the fifth day of the estrous cycle after surgery.
Sectioning the right, left, or both SONs on day 5 (early luteal phase) resulted in a significant increase in the number of
fresh corpora lutea. Ovulation increased significantly when the left SON (L-SON) was sectioned during late follicular phase
(day 1) and medium luteal phase (day 8). When surgery was performed on days 1 or 8, neither sectioning the right SON (R-SON)
nor sectioning the SON bilaterally had an apparent effect on ovulation rates. Similarly, ovulation rates were not affected
when unilateral (right or left) or bilateral sectioning of the SON was performed during late luteal phase two (day 12). Unilateral
or bilateral sectioning of the SON performed during the early luteal phase (day 5) was associated with a significant decrease
in uterine weight. A comparable effect was observed when the L-SON was sectioned during late follicular phase (day 1), or
medium luteal phase (day 8). No effects on uterine weight were observed when unilateral or bilateral sectioning of the SON
was performed during late luteal phase. Our results suggest that in the guinea pig the SON modulates ovulation, and that the
degree of modulation varies along the estrous cycle. The strongest influence of the SONs on ovulation occurs during early
luteal phase, and decrease thereafter, being absent by late luteal phase. In addition, sectioning the left or the right SON
caused different responses by the ovaries of adult guinea pigs. This paper discusses the mechanisms by which ovulation increased

Summary Neurotransmitters involved in the vestibular system are largely uncharacterized. On the basis of results of earlier electrophysiological and immunohistochemical experiments, glutamate and gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA) have been proposed in both mammalian and non-mammalian species as afferent transmitters between the sensory cell and the afferent dendrite. GABA is also suspected to act as an efferent neurotransmitter in the cochlea. We describe in this study the immunocytochemical localization of GABA within the vestibular end organs in the guinea pig. GABA immunoreactivity was found in the calyceal nerve endings surrounding type I hair cells of the vestibular epithelia. The most significant labelings were obtained in the crista ampullaris. Labeling was more difficult to observe in the utricular and saccular macula. These results contribute to the recent proposal that the calyx has a secretory function, and suggest that GABA may have a modulatory influence upon the type I hair cells. 相似文献
