Nutritional status relating to flight activity was investigated in natural populations of Triatoma sordida and T. guasayana during the dry season in the Bolivian Chaco. The peak flight activity of both species was unimodal and covered the period 61-180 min after sunset. The weight of insects was used as the indicator of nutritional status. Interspecies comparisons employing the same sex and type of capture showed a higher weight for T. guasayana. No significant difference according to weight was observed between flying insects and those collected in natural ecotopes (hollow trees and bromeliads). More than 87% of insects collected from natural ecotopes displayed flight ability under the study conditions, explaining their tendency to invade artificial structures during the dry season.  相似文献

The Reduviid bugs Triatoma garciabesi Carcavallo et al. (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae), previously known as T. sordida Ståhl in the semi‐arid chaco region, and T. guasayana Wygodzinsky & Abalos, vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), were found to occupy wide but different ranges of ecotopes in the peridomestic environment. At Amamá and nearby rural villages in north‐western Argentina, a combined total of 1233 specimens were collected from 325/2314 (14%) sites surveyed at 6‐monthly intervals from November 1994 to November 1996. Triatoma garciabesi and T. guasayana displayed a significantly different distribution among peridomestic ecotopes. Triatoma garciabesi predominated over T. guasayana in the prevalence of infested sites, the number of colonies and the number of bugs collected. For T. garciabesi, the predominant ecotopes most likely to yield T. garciabesi repeatedly were the rugged bark of Prosopis alba or P. nigra (Fabaceae) trees, where chickens roosted, and chicken coops. For T. guasayana the main ecotopes were goat or sheep corrals, piled materials and orchard fences. Triatoma garciabesi and T. guasayana were collected concurrently from the same site on 9/2314 (0.4%) occasions, and on different dates at the same site on 12 (0.5%) occasions. The observed low frequency of mixed populations (< 1%) was not significantly different from that expected from a hypothesis of independence. Triatoma garciabesi clearly outnumbered T. guasayana in four of the nine mixed populations, none of which persisted as such. Neither T. garciabesi nor T. guasayana colonized human habitations, even in the absence of T. infestans (formerly the predominant domestic vector of T. cruzi in this area), a situation that apparently has not changed in the last 50 years in northern Argentina.  相似文献

Background

Chagas disease prevention critically depends on keeping houses free of triatomine vectors. Insecticide spraying is very effective, but re-infestation of treated dwellings is commonplace. Early detection-elimination of re-infestation foci is key to long-term control; however, all available vector-detection methods have low sensitivity. Chemically-baited traps are widely used in vector and pest control-surveillance systems; here, we test this approach for Triatoma spp. detection under field conditions in the Gran Chaco.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Using a repeated-sampling approach and logistic models that explicitly take detection failures into account, we simultaneously estimate vector occurrence and detection probabilities. We then model detection probabilities (conditioned on vector occurrence) as a function of trapping system to measure the effect of chemical baits. We find a positive effect of baits after three (odds ratio [OR] 5.10; 95% confidence interval [CI95] 2.59–10.04) and six months (OR 2.20, CI95 1.04–4.65). Detection probabilities are estimated at p≈0.40–0.50 for baited and at just p≈0.15 for control traps. Bait effect is very strong on T. infestans (three-month assessment: OR 12.30, CI95 4.44–34.10; p≈0.64), whereas T. sordida is captured with similar frequency in baited and unbaited traps.

Conclusions/Significance

Chemically-baited traps hold promise for T. infestans surveillance; the sensitivity of the system at detecting small re-infestation foci rises from 12.5% to 63.6% when traps are baited with semiochemicals. Accounting for imperfect detection, infestation is estimated at 26% (CI95 16–40) after three and 20% (CI95 11–34) after six months. In the same assessments, traps detected infestation in 14% and 8.5% of dwellings, whereas timed manual searches (the standard approach) did so in just 1.4% of dwellings only in the first survey. Since infestation rates are the main indicator used for decision-making in control programs, the approach we present may help improve T. infestans surveillance and control program management.  相似文献

Previous authors demonstrated that Triatoma virus (TrV) is able to infect several species of triatomines when injected with viral inoculum obtained from its original host, T. infestans. Both vertical (transovarian) and horizontal (faecal-oral) mechanisms of viral transmission were also described. In this paper we report the experimental TrV infection of a wild species from southern Argentina, T. patagonica. The inoculum consisted of clarified gut contents of infected T. infestans rubbed on the chicken skin whereupon T. patagonica individuals were fed. The results demonstrate that this is another potential host for the virus, and that the oral route is also effective for experimental interspecific infections.  相似文献

Many previous studies have shown a great phylogenetic and biological variability of Trypanosoma cruzi using different molecular and biochemical methods. Populations of T. cruzi were initially clustered into two main lineages called TcI and TcII by the size of the mini‐exon PCR product. In the present study, 33 isolates derived from three triatomine taxa, which belong to the Triatoma brasiliensis species complex (Triatoma juazeirensis, Triatoma melanica and Triatoma sherlocki); collected in three distinct areas of Bahia state were characterized by PCR. The isolates were identified by the size of the mini‐exon gene, 18S rRNA and 24Sα rRNA amplicons. T. cruzi isolates obtained in sylvatic and intradomiciliar ecotopes, derived from T. juazeirensis and T. melanica, were identified as TcI while the parasites originated from T. sherlocki were characterized as TcI and TcII genotypes, respectively. Those species are present in sylvatic ecotopes but are able to infest intradomiciliar areas. Therefore, it would be important to maintain studies in those localities of Bahia and further investigate the possibilities of Chagas disease transmission. Human disease may occur by any T. cruzi genotype and not only by TcII as it is the case in Amazonia.  相似文献

The values of biological parameters related to hatching, lifespan, the number of blood meals between moults, mortality, time lapse before the beginning of feeding, feeding time and defecation delay for each instar of three Mexican-American species of Triatominae, Triatoma recurva, Triatoma protracta (former subspecies protracta) and Triatoma rubida (former subspecies uhleri), were evaluated and compared. No significant (p > 0.05) differences were recorded among the three species with respect to the average time required to hatch. This time was approximately 19 days. The average egg-to-adult development time was significantly (p < 0.05) shorter for T. rubida. The number of blood meals at each nymphal instar varied from one-five for each species. The mortality rates were higher for the first-instar nymphs of the three species studied. The mean time lapse before the beginning of feeding was between 0.3-3 min for most nymphs of all instars of each species studied. The mean feeding time was the longest for T. recurva, followed by T. protracta. The defecation delay was less than 10 min for T. recurva and T. rubida. Given these results, only T. rubida should be considered an important potential vector of Trypanosoma cruzi transmission to humans in areas of Mexico where these species exist, whereas T. recurva and T. protracta would be of secondary importance.  相似文献

We tested the attraction of Triatoma dimidiata and T. pallidipennis to traps baited with yeast volatiles. Two traps were simultaneously presented in opposite sides of an experimental arena. One trap presented a yeast culture in sucrose solution, while the other contained sucrose solution as control. A first experimental series was done without offering a central refuge for bugs. In a second series, one shelter where the insects could hide was offered and the traps were presented afterwards. In the first series, yeast baited traps attracted significantly more insects than control ones for both species. In the second series, T. pallidipennis was significantly attracted to yeast, whereas T. dimidiata was not attracted. The potential use of yeast baited traps for capturing these vectors of Chagas disease is discussed.  相似文献

Feeding behaviour of Triatoma infestans, T. brasiliensis and T. pseudomaculata on pigeons and mice was compared by electronic monitoring of the cibarial pump. The methodology developed permits the study detailed of triatomine feeding behaviour using an artificial feeder as well as on live hosts. T. infestans was the species that fed most rapidly on the two hosts tested (28.03+/-1.6 mg/min for pigeon and 21.33+/-1.7 mg/min for mouse), followed by T. brasiliensis (17.09+/-1.4 mg/min and 13.1+/-1.5 mg/min for pigeon and mouse, respectively) and T. pseudomaculata, (5.23+/-0.6 mg/min and 4.09+/-0.4 mg/min for pigeon and mouse, respectively). The quantity of liquid ingested per stroke of the cibarial pump was 100.7+/-4.1 nl for T. infestans, 69.1+/-2.7 nl for T. brasiliensis and 26.8+/-1.5 nl for T. pseudomaculata. The rate of engorgement in pigeons tended to be greater than that obtained for mice in the three species studied. In the experiments carried out using mice, probing times tended to be longer and interruptions during the meal more prolonged. This reinforces the idea that feeding on mice is more difficult than on pigeons, requiring more contact time to obtain the similar quantity of blood.  相似文献

The anatomy of the adult nervous system of the haematophagous bug Triatoma infestans has been studied by means of dissections and histology. The central nervous system comprises three nervous masses: the brain + suboesophageal ganglion, the prothoracic ganglion, and the posterior fused ganglion (meso + metathoracic + abdominal ganglia). The form of the brain is determined by the tubular head and the highly developed muscles of the pharyngeal pump. The prothoracic. ganglion is located near the posternum, the posterior ganglionic mass near the mesosternum. A significative variation of the branching pattern of abdominal nerves is reported. The innervations of mouth parts, salivary glands, muscles, retrocerebral complex, spiracles, rectum, reproductive organs, alary muscles, and peripheral nerves are described. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Triatoma arthurneivai Lent & Martins and Triatoma wygodzinskyi Lent (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) are two Brazilian species found in the sylvatic environment. Several authors may have misidentified T. arthurneivai and consequently published erroneous information. This work reports the use of geometric morphometric analysis on wings in order to differentiate T. arthurneivai and T. wygodzinskyi, and thus to detect possible misidentifications. Triatomines collected from the field in the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, and from laboratory colonies, were used. Analyses show a clear differentiation between specimens of T. arthurneivai and T. wygodzinskyi. This indicates that T. arthurneivai populations from São Paulo state were misidentified and should be considered as T. wygodzinskyi. This study also suggests that T. arthurneivai is an endemic species from Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais state.  相似文献

Triatoma infestans eggs are shown to synthesize hydrocarbons. Radio-gas chromatography was used to demonstrate metabolism of [1-14C]propionate into precursor methyl-branched fatty acids and into methyl-branched hydrocarbons in T. infestans eggs. These reactions have not been demonstrated previously in insect eggs. An in vivo study showed that hydrocarbons are also transported to eggs by the hemolymph. Inhibition of hydrocarbon synthesis by sodium trichloroacetate (NaTCA) was correlated with reduced oviposition, reduced hatchability, and reduced insect survival. Scanning electron microscopy showed impoverishment of the eggs' epicuticular waxes following NaTCA treatment. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Triatoma guasayana and two putative cryptic species pertaining to T. sordida complex (named groups 1 and 2) occur in sympatry in the Bolivian Chaco. Using multilocus enzyme electrophoresis and subsequent genetic analysis, our work assesses their population distribution and dispersal capacity in domestic, peridomestic, and silvatic environments. Our collections by light trap in the silvatic environment indicated a predominance of T. guasayana and T. sordida group 2 and a lesser abundance of T. sordida group 1 ( pound 10% of the total of captures). Their similar distribution in two silvatic areas 80 km apart supports the hypothesis of their homogeneous dispersal through the Bolivian Chaco. The distribution of T. guasayana and T. sordida groups 1 and 2 was similar between silvatic environment and peridomestic ecotopes where 25% of positive places was occupied by two or three species. Bromeliads were confirmed as favorable shelter for T. guasayana but were free of T. sordida. T. sordida group 1 and to a lesser extent T. guasayana would be more invasive vectors for houses than T. sordida group 2. The spatial partition in the three species sampled in two distant sites suggested a reduced dispersive capacity.  相似文献

olatile exocrine products of the metathoracic Brindley's glands in Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) were obtained by dissection and by sampling the air passed over agitated live adults. Isobutyric acid was the main component in the glands, together with isobutyl, isoamyl and amyl alcohols, 2-phenylethanol and other carboxylic acids and esters. Isobutyric acid, isobutyl, isoamyl and amyl alcohols and esters were also found to be emitted into the air, apparently for defence. No volatile products were detected in the metasternal glands.  相似文献

Analysis of field populations of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), after a 3-year study, shows that population growth rate is affected by both density-dependent and density-independent mortality. Although an equilibrium exists, apparently as a consequence of a density dependent-mechanism, population density fluctuates throughout the year because of the effect of monthly mean minimum temperature as a density-independent source of mortality. Simulation studies based on Moran curves shows that high population densities have an approximately constant extinction probability (around 0.20), independently of the season the population starts growing. However, at very low population densities, the extinction probability depends strongly on the season when the population begins to grow. Very low density populations beginning in winter or autumn have the highest extinction probability. The outcome of the simulation studies coincides with results observed in field populations affected by insecticide application at different seasons.  相似文献

The structure and lipid thermotropic transitions of highly purified lipophorin of Triatoma infestans were examined by several techniques: steady-state fluorescence polarization of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH), cis-parinaric acid (cis-PnA) and trans-parinaric acid (trans-PnA), light scattering fluorescence energy transfer between the lipophorin tryptophan residues and the bound chromophores, DPH, trans-parinaric acid cis-parinaric acid, gel electrophoresis, and gel filtration. Fluorescence polarization of PnAs and DPH revealed a reversible lipid thermotropic transition in intact lipophorin at about 20 degrees C and 18 degrees C, respectively. In lipophorin, lipid dispersion fluorescence polarization of DPH detected a lipid transition approximately at 20 degrees C, while trans-PnA showed a gel phase formation at a temperature below 30 degrees C. Similar experiments in which trans-PnA was incorporated into diacylglycerols and phospholipids extracted from the lipophorin revealed gel phase formation below 30 degrees C and 24 degrees C, respectively. Light scattering measurements showed that lipophorin particles aggregate irreversibly at 45 degrees C, increasing the molecular weight, as determined by gel filtration on Sephacryl S-300, from 740,000 to values larger than 1,500,000. The particle aggregation did not change the physical properties of the lipophorin studied by fluorescence polarization, indicating that the aggregation is apparently a non-denaturing process. Energy transfer between the lipophorin tryptophans and the bound chromophores cis-PnA, trans-PnA, and DPA revealed a different location of the fluorescent probes within the lipophorin. Temperature-dependence on the energy transfer efficiency for all probes confirmed a change in the ordering of the lipophorin lipids at 24 degrees C.  相似文献

We conducted a lab‐based comparative study on vector capacity features of two species of triatomines: Triatoma brasiliensis and T. melanica. Both are members of the T. brasiliensis species complex. The former is the most important Chagas disease vector in the northeastern region of Brazil. To date, no transmission via T. melanica has been recorded. Immature insects exhibited distinct intermoult periods without a direct relationship to a given species. Females of T. brasiliensis consumed an average of 1.9 times more meals (mean = 12.92 vs 6.63) and survived for a shorter period (mean =330.8 days) than T. melanica (mean = 365.2 days), probably due to the cost of reproduction (all significant at P<0.05). These data support the idea that T. brasiliensis is more adapted to lab conditions and is more able to infest domiciles than T. melanica. We also found significant distinctions in other features between these species, such as the elapsed time without eating before molting, which was higher for the second, third, and fifth nymph stages of T. melanica. Regarding features analyzed related to vector capacity, insects of all life stages of both species were considered competent to transmit Trypanosoma cruzi because they needed many feedings (mean =1.5‐3.82) to moult and because a high proportion (>39%) of insects defecated rapidly (<30 s) after feeding. Overall, results highlight the need to extend vector surveillance to T. melanica.  相似文献

1. Gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry were used to verify the presence of arachidonic acid (20:4 omega 6) in adult male and female organs of the blood-suckling bug Triatoma infestans. Fat body, gonad and head lipids were analyzed. 2. Male gonads contained the highest percentage of phospholipids and the highest percentage of arachidonic acid. 3. Phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylserine and sphingomyelin were isolated from gonads and heads of sexed insects and the fatty acid composition analyzed. 4. All the phospholipids analyzed contained relevant percentages of linoleic acid and fair percentages of arachidonic acid, except for sphingomyelin where no 20:4 omega 6 acid was found. 5. However, arachidonic acid was specifically incorporated in phosphatidylinositol since this phospholipid contained very large percentages of the acid. 6. In male gonads, phosphatidylcholine also contained a similar high percentage of the acid. Arachidonic acid is apparently incorporated, selectively, into these lipids from the blood of the host.  相似文献

Abstract.  The effect of the relative humidity (RH) of the environment on water loss is studied in Triatoma brasiliensis . Starved or recently fed early stages of T. brasiliensis are exposed to 15, 37, 46 and 73% RH. Water loss is estimated by weighing individual insects daily. The results obtained with starved insects show that the group maintained at 15% RH loses more water and shows a higher mortality compared with the others. An experiment in which recently fed nymphs are exposed to different RHs shows that all groups of insects lose the greatest amount of water during the first day. The group exposed to 15% RH show a higher water loss than the others before and after ecdysis. The survival of recently fed nymphs is not affected by the level of RH to which they are exposed. The results are discussed in relation to the water balance in this species.  相似文献
