Studies have documented the presence of behavioural lateralization in many groups of lower vertebrates, demonstrating that these behaviours are not limited to mammals and birds. These studies suggest that the evolution of brain lateralization, often linked to lateralized behaviours, may have occurred early in evolutionary history and may not have been the result of multiple independent evolutionary events as previously thought. The goal of this study was to further document behavioural lateralization in another group of lower vertebrates, snakes. Given the importance of the coiling posture to snakes, I examined the coiling behaviour of a cottonmouth population. Coiling asymmetries were found at both the individual and population levels. However, the adaptive significance and mechanisms influencing this behaviour remain undefined. Additional research is needed to explore these areas and to link the lateralized behaviours documented in this and other studies directly to brain asymmetries before the evolutionary history of brain lateralization can be further resolved. Large variations in leaf δ 15 N in Bornean tropical rainforest trees may indicate that various tropical species have species-specific strategy for nitrogen uptake under low soil nutrient conditions, including root symbiotic microorganisms such as ectomycorrhiza.

Abstract

Lowland tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia are characterized by high species diversity despite limited soil nutrient conditions. The plant nitrogen isotope ratio (δ15N) reflects plant uptake of soil nitrogen. We analyzed δ15N values and nitrogen content (N %) in leaves and roots of 108 woody species with different types of symbiotic microorganisms, of different life forms (emergent, canopy, sub-canopy, understory, and canopy gap species), and from different families in a Bornean lowland dipterocarp forest to gain more insight into the diversity of nitrogen uptake strategy in the rhizosphere. Leaf δ15N values in the species studied varied largely from ?7.2 to 5.0 ‰, which is comparable to the values of known Asian trees including temperate, sub-tropical, and tropical mountain forests. Leaf δ15N also varied significantly among both life forms and families, though the phylogenetically independent contrast (PIC) relationships were not statistically significant among life form, family, and symbiotic types. Some families showed specific leaf δ15N values; Dipterocarpaceae, the dominant family in the canopy layer with symbiotic ectomycorrhiza in Southeast Asia, had small intraspecific variation and higher leaf δ15N values (0.03 ‰) compared with species exhibiting arbuscular mycorrhiza, whereas several families such as Burseraceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Myrtaceae showed large interspecific variation in leaf δ15N (e.g., from ?7.2 to 5.0 ‰ in Euphorbiaceae). These variations suggest that tropical species may have family- or species-specific strategy, such as root symbiotic microorganisms, for nitrogen uptake under low-nutrient conditions in tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia.

Small lakes in northern latitudes represent a significant source of CH4 to the atmosphere that is predicted to increase with warming in the Arctic. Yet, whole-lake CH4 budgets are lacking as are measurements of δ13C-CH4 and δ2H-CH4. In this study, we quantify spatial variability of diffusive and ebullitive fluxes of CH4 and corresponding δ13C-CH4 and δ2H-CH4 in a small, Arctic lake system with fringing wetland in southwestern Greenland during summer. Net CH4 flux was highly variable, ranging from an average flux of 7 mg CH4 m?2 d?1 in the deep-water zone to 154 mg CH4 m?2 d?1 along the lake margin. Diffusive flux accounted for ~8.5 % of mean net CH4 flux, with plant-mediated and ebullitive flux accounting for the balance of the total net flux. Methane content of emitted ebullition was low (mean ± SD 10 ± 17 %) compared to previous studies from boreal lakes and wetlands. Isotopic composition of net CH4 emissions varied widely throughout the system, with δ13C-CH4 ranging from ?66.2 to ?55.5 ‰, and δ2H-CH4 ranging from ?345 to ?258 ‰. Carbon isotope composition of CH4 in ebullitive flux showed wider variation compared to net flux, ranging from ?69.2 to ?49.2 ‰. Dissolved CH4 concentrations were highest in the sediment and decreased up the water column. Higher concentrations of CH4 in the hypoxic deep water coincided with decreasing dissolved O2 concentrations, while methanotrophic oxidation dominated in the epilimnion based upon decreasing concentrations and increasing values of δ13C-CH4 and δ2H-CH4. The most depleted 13C- and 2H-isotopic values were observed in profundal bottom waters and in subsurface profundal sediments. Based upon paired δ13C and δ2H observations of CH4, acetate fermentation was likely the dominant production pathway throughout the system. However, isotopic ratios of CH4 in deeper sediments were consistent with mixing/transition between CH4 production pathways, indicating a higher contribution of the CO2 reduction pathway. The large spatial variability in fluxes of CH4 and in isotopic composition of CH4 throughout a single lake system indicates that the underlying mechanisms controlling CH4 cycling (production, consumption and transport) are spatially heterogeneous. Net flux along the lake margin dominated whole-lake flux, suggesting the nearshore littoral area dominates CH4 emissions in these systems. Future studies of whole-lake CH4 budgets should consider this significant spatial heterogeneity.  相似文献

Oncorhynchus kawamurae (Osteichthyes: Salmonidae) (common name “Kunimasu”), a species endemic to Lake Tazawa, Akita Prefecture, Japan, was believed to have been extinct since 1940. However, nine specimens were discovered in March and April 2010 in Lake Saiko, Yamanashi Prefecture, one of the lakes to which eyed eggs of the species were introduced in 1935. These were identified as O. kawamurae because of having 47–62 pyloric caeca, 37–43 gill-rakers, a black-colored body, and spawning at 30–40 m depth in early spring, which are unique characteristics within Oncorhynchus. Furthermore, the distinctiveness of Kunimasu from sympatric kokanee (O. nerka) was supported by microsatellite DNA data.  相似文献

Background

South Asians in England have an increased risk of childhood cancer but incidence by their individual ethnicities using self-assigned ethnicity is unknown. Our objective was to compare the incidence of childhood cancer in British Indians and Whites in Leicester, which has virtually complete, self-assigned, ethnicity data and the largest population of Indians in England.

Methods

We obtained data on all cancer registrations from 1996 to 2008 for Leicester with ethnicity obtained by linkage to the Hospital Episodes Statistics database. Age-standardised incidence rates were calculated for childhood cancers in Indians and Whites as well as rate ratios, adjusted for age.

Results

There were 33 cancers registered among Indian children and 39 among White children. The incidence rate for Indians was greater compared to Whites for all cancers combined (RR 1.82 (95% CI 1.14 to 2.89); p = 0.01), with some evidence of increased risk of leukaemia (RR 2.20 (0.95 to 5.07); p = 0.07), lymphoma (RR 3.96 (0.99 to 15.84); p = 0.04) and central nervous system tumours (RR 2.70 (1.00 to 7.26); p = 0.05). Rates were also higher in British Indian children compared to children in India.

Conclusions

British Indian children in Leicester had an increased risk of developing cancer compared to White children, largely due to a higher incidence of central nervous system and haematological malignancies.  相似文献

Nitrate in the unsaturated zone between the soil surface and the water table was studied in agroforestry Parklands in north western Senegal by examination of samples obtained by hand auger. Depending on location, water tables existed at depths between 10 and 35m below ground. Previous studies of groundwater in this region had found that large concentrations of nitrate were unconnected with anthropogenic activity. The objective of this study was to determine whether nitrogen fixing vegetation had a role in groundwater nitrate accumulation and whether roots of trees were located deeply enough to access the nitrate. Accordingly, sample profiles were augered close to stems of nitrogen fixing trees, non-nitrogen fixing trees and also in adjacent areas that were unaffected by tree presence. These adjacent areas were typically open pasture or cultivated fields. Tree fine roots were quantified in the samples and examined for the presence of mycorrhizas. Similarly, sand/soil samples were examined and tested for the presence of nitrogen fixing rhizobia that were capable of forming functional nodules on appropriate host plants. Concentrations of nitrate were greatest in soils beneath nitrogen fixing trees and nitrate was more plentiful in profiles augered beneath nitrogen fixing crops than it was elsewhere suggesting that N-fixation was the source of the nitrate. The concentrrations of nitrate that were found in the unsaturated zone were greatly in excess of the WHO recommended limit for nitrate in drinking water. High NO3-N/Cl ratios confirm insitu production of nitrate, and indicate that this is a natural baseline occurrence related to N-fixation. The nitrate is moving down the profile and impacts the groundwater unless it can be intercepted by plant roots. NO3-N amounts in solution in the soil profile varied between 75 and 1000kg ha–1 beneath trees and between 120 and 400kg ha–1 in areas outwith tree crowns. Although these quantities of N occupy the lower end of the range of N values obtained in north American deserts, they comprise a considerable dryland resource where amounts of organic fertilizer are limited and where cost prohibits the use of commercial fertilizers. Roots of both nitrogen fixing and non-nitrogen fixing trees were deep enough to access the nitrate but the small amounts of available water at intermediate depths suggest that large scale uptake of nitrate will only be possible in the wetter zones located close to the water table. Shallow roots tended to be more heavily colonized by mycorrhizas than deeper roots but mycorrhizas were recovered from roots located 22m below ground. Tree roots and rhizobia had similar patterns of distribution. They were commonest close to the soil surface, less frequent at intermediate depths and tended to increase in frequency close to the water table.  相似文献

Primary cultures of rat hepatocytes were studied in serum-free media. Ultradian protein synthesis rhythm was used as a marker of cell synchronization in the population. Addition of glutamic acid (0.2 mg/ml) to the medium of nonsynchronous sparse cultures resulted in detection of a common protein synthesis rhythm, hence in synchronization of the cells. The antagonist of glutamic acid metabotropic receptors MCPG (0.01 mg/ml) added together with glutamic acid abolished the synchronization effect; in sparse cultures, no rhythm was detected. Feeding rats with glutamic acid (30 mg with food) resulted in protein synthesis rhythm in sparse cultures obtained from the rats. After feeding without glutamic acid, linear kinetics of protein synthesis was revealed. Thus, glutamic acid, a component of blood as a non-neural transmitter, can synchronize the activity of hepatocytes and can form common rhythm of protein synthesis in vitro and in vivo. This effect is realized via receptors. Mechanisms of cell–cell communication are discussed on analyzing effects of non-neural functions of neurotransmitters. Glutamic acid is used clinically in humans. Hence, a previously unknown function of this drug is revealed.  相似文献

Given its broad geographical distribution, Aotus is a productive genus for comparative studies that evaluate how different ecological factors influence the morphology, behavior, ecology, and demography of closely related species. During 18 mo we collected demographic, ranging, and activity data from owl monkeys (Aotus vociferans) in Yasuní National Park in eastern Ecuador. To collect demographic data, we monitored the trail system several times per week searching for groups. To characterize patterns of activity, we recorded the time when the subjects began and ended their nocturnal activity, and we collected data on range use and daily path length during 12 full-moon and 12 new-moon night follows of 1 radiocollared group. They ranged in size between 3 and 5 individuals (n = 4 groups). All groups were strictly nocturnal, beginning their activity between 1800 and 1900 h and finishing it between 0500 and 0600 h. The territory size of the radiocollared group was 6.3 ha. On average, the subjects traveled 645 m per night (±286 m) and ranged farther during full-moon than new-moon nights. The owl monkeys used a small number of preferred daytime sleeping trees. Our data conform well with previous studies of other tropical owl monkeys from Colombia and Perú. A comparison of tropical owl monkeys with more temperate Aotus azarai from the Argentinean Gran Chaco reveals that grouping patterns, day range length, and territory size are relatively conserved across the genus despite dramatic differences in body size and activity pattern.  相似文献

Although primate predation is rarely observed, a series of primate anti-predation strategies have been described. Energetic costs of such strategies can vary from high-cost mobbing, via less costly alarm calling, to low-cost furtive concealment. Here we report the anti-predation strategies of red-nosed cuxiú, Chiropotes albinasus, based on direct observations from four study sites in southeastern Brazilian Amazonia. Over a collective period of 1255 fieldwork hours, we observed nine direct interactions between raptors (all potential predators) and red-nosed cuxiús. Of these, one (11%) resulted in predation. Raptors involved were: Harpia harpyja (four events), Leucopternis sp. (two events), Spizaëtus tyrannus (one event), and unidentified large raptors (two events). Predation attempts occurred in flooded-forest and terra firme rainforest, were directed at both adult and non-adult cuxiús, and involved both adult and juvenile raptors. Anti-predation strategies adopted by the cuxiús included: (1) group defence and mobbing behaviour (two occasions), (2) dropping into dense sub-canopy (seven occasions), (3) alarm calling (eight occasions), and (4) fleeing to, and hiding in, dense vegetation (eight occasions). During each encounter at least two of these behaviours were recorded. These are the first published records of predation, predation attempts, and anti-predator behaviour involving red-nosed cuxiú.  相似文献

Background:

Changes in the long-term survival of people admitted to hospital is unknown. This study examined trends in 1-year survival of patients admitted to hospital adjusted for improved survival in the general population.

Methods:

One-year survival after admission to hospital was determined for all adults admitted to hospital in Ontario in 1994, 1999, 2004, or 2009 by linking to vital statistics datasets. Annual survival in the general population was determined from life tables for Ontario.

Results:

Between 1994 and 2009, hospital use decreased (from 8.8% to 6.3% of the general adult population per year), whereas crude 1-year mortality among people with hospital admissions increased (from 9.2% to 11.6%). During this time, patients in hospital became significantly older (median age increased from 51 to 58 yr) and sicker (the proportion with a Charlson comorbidity index score of 0 decreased from 68.2% to 60.0%), and were more acutely ill on admission (elective admissions decreased from 47.4% to 42.0%; proportion brought to hospital by ambulance increased from 16.1% to 24.8%). Compared with 1994, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for death at 1 year in 2009 was 0.78 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.77–0.79). However, 1-year risk of death in the general population decreased by 24% during the same time. After adjusting for improved survival in the general population, risk of death at 1 year for people admitted to hospital remained significantly lower in 2009 than in 1994 (adjusted relative excess risk 0.81, 95% CI 0.80–0.82).

Interpretation:

After accounting for both the increased burden of patient sickness and improved survival in the general population, 1-year survival for people admitted to hospital increased significantly from 1994 to 2009. The reasons for this improvement cannot be determined from these data. Hospitals have a special place in most health care systems. Hospital staff care for the people with the most serious illnesses and the most vulnerable. They are frequently the location of many life-defining moments — including birth, surgery, acute medical illness and death — of many people and their families. Hospitals serve as a focus in the training of most physicians. In addition, they consume a considerable proportion of health care expenditures worldwide. 1 Given the prominence of hospitals in health care systems, measuring outcomes related to hospital care is important. In particular, the measurement of trends for outcomes of hospital care can help us to infer whether the care provided to hospital patients is improving. Previous such studies have focused on survival trends for specific diseases or patients who received treatment in specific departments. 2 12 None of these studies have adjusted for survival trends in the general population, the adjustment for which is important to determine whether changes in survival of patients in hospital merely reflect changes in the overall population. In this study, whether or not patient outcomes have changed over time was determined by examining trends in 1-year survival in all patients admitted to hospital, adjusting for improved survival in the general population.  相似文献

Noncovalent interactions in XCN···YO2H (X = F, Cl, Br, I; Y = P, As, Sb) complexes were investigated using ab initio calculations at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. There are four different configurations of these complexes, and the complexes are formed via hydrogen bonds, halogen bonds, π-hole interactions, or dual interactions. An examination of binding distances and interaction energies suggested that π-hole bonds are more stable than the other interactions. Molecular electrostatic potentials, electron densities, second-order stabilization energies, and electron density differences were computed to study the character of these interactions.  相似文献

Background aimsThe authors describe here a novel therapeutic strategy combining a bispecific antibody (bsAb) with cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells.MethodsThe authors have designed, produced and purified a novel tetravalent IgG1-like CD20 × CD5 bsAb called BL-01. The bsAb is composed of a fused heavy chain and two free light chains that pair correctly to the heavy chain sequences thanks to complementary mutations in the monoclonal antibody 2 CH1/CL sequences.ResultsThe authors show that BL-01 can bind specifically to CD20 and CD5 with an affinity of 4–6 nM, demonstrating correct pairing of two light chains to the fused heavy chain. The CD20 × CD5 BL-01 bsAb has a functional human IgG1 Fc and can induce up to 65% complement-dependent cytotoxicity of a CD20+ lymphoma cell line in the presence of human complement, similar to anti-CD20 rituximab. The bsAb also induces significant natural killer cell activation and antibody-dependent cytotoxicity of up to 25% as well as up to 65% phagocytosis by human macrophages in the presence of CD20+ tumor cells. The BL-01 bsAb binds to CD20 and CD5 simultaneously and can redirect CIK cells in vitro to kill CD20+ targets, increasing the cytotoxicity of CIK cells by about 3-fold. The authors finally show that the CD20 × CD5 BL-01 bsAb synergizes with CIK cells in vivo in controlling tumor growth and prolonging survival of nonobese diabetic/severe combined immunodeficiency mice inoculated with a patient-derived, aggressive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma xenograft.ConclusionsThe authors suggest that the efficacy of bsAb in vivo is due to the combined activation of innate immunity by Fc and redirection of CIK cells to kill the tumor target.  相似文献

Microsatellite–centromere recombination rates were estimated at 21 loci in relation to centromere of chromosomes in gynogenetic diploid lines induced from loaches Misgurnus anguillicaudatus of two different populations in Japan. All the microsatellite loci gave allelic segregation according to the Mendelian manner of inheritance in normal diploid families. Since loaches from the Kita population in the southern area of Hokkaido Island and those from the Memanbetsu population in the northern area, Hokkaido, Japan, were reported by previous genetic studies to be genetically diversified, map distances were compared between loaches from the two different populations. Three (Mado7, Mac3 and Mac49) of five loci, which could be compared inter-populationally, gave significantly different recombination rates, i.e., map distances. The results support the presence of genetic difference between the two populations. Recent warming has caused a northern extension in the distribution of many southern fish species in Icelandic waters. Polar cod (Boreogadus saida) around Iceland are near the southern limit of their distribution, but are poorly studied in the area. Therefore, material sampled during demersal fish surveys in March 1985–2013 and in pelagic 0-group surveys in Iceland–East Greenland waters in August–September 1974–2003 was used to investigate their distribution, abundance and biology. Demersal polar cod were most often caught on the outer shelf to the north-west and north of Iceland, but during years of widest distribution and highest abundance, they were caught farther to the east on the northern shelf. Pelagic 0-group polar cod were only caught sporadically and mainly confined to the waters off the north-west shelf of Iceland and the East Greenland shelf (southern Denmark Strait). In demersal hauls, the number of stations with polar cod decreased with increasing bottom temperature and polar cod were most widely distributed in the years 1989, 1994 and 1995. Highest numbers of demersal polar cod per haul were caught at temperatures of ?0.5 to 2.5 °C and at 200–450 m depth. The length of demersal polar cod ranged from 5 to 32 cm, while the fish caught in the pelagic trawl ranged from 2.2 to 19 cm. The polar cod in the subarctic waters north of Iceland most likely originate from the waters off East Greenland and further warming and decline in sea ice may eventually lead to the disappearance of polar cod from Icelandic waters.  相似文献

Leaves from several desert and woodland species, including gymnosperms and angiosperms with both C3 and C4 physiology, were analyzed to detect trends in '13Cleaf with elevation and slope aspect along two transects in southeastern Utah and south-central New Mexico, USA. The main difference between the two transects is the steeper elevational gradient for mean annual and summer precipitation in the southern transect. For any given species, we found that isotopic differences between individual plants growing at the same site commonly equal differences measured for plants along the entire altitudinal gradient. In C3 plants, '13Cleaf values become slightly enriched at the lowest elevations, the opposite of trends identified in more humid regions. Apparently, increasing water-use efficiency with drought stress offsets the influence of other biotic and abiotic factors that operate to decrease isotopic discrimination with elevation. For some species shared by the two transects (e.g., Pinus edulis and Cercocarpus montanus), '13Cleaf values are dramatically depleted at sites that receive more than 550 mm mean annual precipitation, roughly the boundary (pedalfer-pedocal) at which soils commonly fill to field capacity in summer and carbonates are leached. We hypothesize that, in summer-wet areas, this may represent the boundary at which drought stress overtakes other factors in determining the sign of '13Cleaf with elevation. The opposition of isotopic trends with elevation in arid versus humid regions cautions against standard correction for elevation in comparative studies of '13Cleaf.  相似文献

Drought stress promotes biochemical and physiological alterations in plant metabolism that limit growth and yield. This study investigated the accumulation of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in plant tissue, the stomatal conductance (gs) and changes in leaf anatomy in Eucalyptus following drought stress situation. In this study, eight Eucalyptus clones were evaluated under normal water supply (control) and drought stress conditions (stress). For the control treatment, plants were irrigated every day with an automated system until the soil was saturated, and for the stress treatment, drought stress was imposed by non-irrigation of plants, and pots were covered using plastic sheeting to avoid rainfall and humidity. This study has shown that: (1) all clones decreased gs with increasing vapor pressure deficit (D) in both treatments. All plastics and drought-tolerant clones (except GG) presented lower stomatal sensitivity to D under stress conditions than drought-sensitive clones; (2) GABA concentrations increased fast after drought stress, but we could not find correlation with these changes and resistance to water stress; and (3) all clones increased the number of stomata and reduced leaf thickness after water stress. The finding is that GABA is a fast stress-signaling molecule in Eucalyptus, but the response of gs to D is a best physiological variable to differentiate drought-tolerant and drought-sensitive Eucalyptus clones.  相似文献
