The effect of secondary-treated wastewater irrigation of a short-rotation willow coppice on soil microbial parameters was evaluated twice in 3 years using microbiological and biochemical properties. The soil metabolically active microbial biomass, basal respiration, N-mineralization, potential nitrification, alkaline and acid phosphatase and dehydrogenase activities were measured. The microbial community metabolic profile was determined with Biolog EcoPlates and bacterial community structure was assessed using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. After 2 years, a significant increase had occurred in soil microbial biomass, respiration and nitrogen mineralization activity both in the irrigated and in the non-treated plots. Wastewater irrigation increased the soil potassium concentration and enhanced the activity of alkaline phosphatase. Plant growth and irrigation affected the nitrogen mineralization activity—the increase was twice as high in the control plots as in the irrigated plots after 2 years. Potential nitrification, acid phosphatase activity and microbial community metabolic activity did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) between the control and the irrigated plots during the study. The comparison of soil profiles indicated that the observed increases in the soil microbiological parameters were allocated to the upper 10 cm. The establishment of willow plants on the fields affected the microbial community structure, with an increased diversity and higher similarity among the planted plots after 2 years. From our results we conclude that the willow coppice affected the soil bacterial community structure and had a positive effect on soil biological activity. Irrigation with pre-treated wastewater affected soil chemical and biochemical properties.  相似文献

A common approach to re‐establishing cottonwood–willow habitat along regulated rivers is through installing dormant, rootless cuttings, yet there is little published information exploring floodplain characteristics that optimize growth of southwestern riparian willows planted in this manner. The goal of this project was to evaluate relationships between growth attributes of Salix exigua and soil texture and soil water availability. Monitoring plots were established in five willow swales planted with dormant S. exigua cuttings along the banks of the Middle Rio Grande in central New Mexico. Data analysis revealed significantly higher aerial cover, height, and stem density for S. exigua plants installed in plots with intermediate levels (15–25%) of fine textured soils distributed through the soil profile. Similar relationships were found in relation to soil water availability. Regression analysis of percent fines and available water at different depth increments provided limited explanation of variability in willow growth attributes at different plots. Findings indicate that S. exigua plants established from cuttings can achieve heights and aerial cover values similar to naturally established willow bars if the floodplain soil profile contains intermediate levels of fine textured soils and the maximum depth to groundwater is within 1.5 m of the ground surface. Where sites are dominated by coarse sand, S. exigua growth may be improved if maximum depth to groundwater is within 1 m of the ground surface.  相似文献

Large increases in the density of woody plants in former grasslands have been documented globally over the past two centuries. Prosopis velutina (velvet mesquite) has recently expanded on over 38 million ha in the grasslands of the American southwest.Mesquite establishment and expansion is potentially influenced by competitive interactions with grasses, particle size distribution (texture) of soil and changes in the amount and/or seasonality of precipitation, amongst other factors. To investigate the relative importance of precipitation seasonality, grass competition, and soil texture on mesquite seedling and establishment, we experimentally manipulated seasonality of precipitation across 72 1.5 m × 1.7 m plots that we planted with two grasses from contrasting functional groups (or left unvegetated) across two highly contrasting soil textures within a semi-desert grassland in Arizona, USA, wherein we followed the demography of 8640 planted mesquite seeds between 2002 and 2006. Up to 70% of the variance in seedling emergence was explained by soil water content, and seedling mortality was more dependent on summer than on winter precipitation.Mortality of less drought tolerant grasses after drought in coarse textured soils created conditions most favorable for seedling establishment, whereas lower rates of seedling establishment were observed in finer textured soils or in plots dominated by more drought tolerant grasses. We conclude that mesquite encroachment is episodic, based on discontinuous patterns of seedling establishment, favored on coarse textured soils and associated with unique conditions of high summer water availability when precipitation is not limiting and when competition from grasses is lowered.  相似文献

In Florida, a root weevil pest of citrus, Diaprepes abbreviatus, is more damaging and attains higher population density in some orchards on fine textured, poorly drained “flatwoods” soils than in those on the deep, coarse sandy soils of the central ridge. Previous research revealed that sentinel weevil larvae were killed by indigenous entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) at significantly higher rates in an orchard on the central ridge, compared to one in the flatwoods. We hypothesized that filling tree planting holes in a flatwoods orchard with sandy soil from the central ridge would provide a more suitable habitat for EPNs, thereby reducing weevil numbers and root herbivory. Fifty trees were planted in oversized planting holes filled with coarse sand and 50 trees were planted in native soil in a split plot design where whole plots were species of introduced EPNs and split plots were soil type. Each of Steinernema diaprepesi, Steinernema riobrave, Heterorhabditis indica, Heterorhabditis zealandica, or no EPNs were introduced into the rhizospheres in 10 plots of each soil type. During four years, EPN numbers in soil samples and the relative abundance of seven species of nematophagous fungi associated with nematodes were measured three times using real-time PCR. The efficacy of EPNs against sentinel weevil larvae was also measured three times by burying caged weevils in situ. EPN species richness (P = 0.001) and diversity (P = 0.01) were always higher in sand than native soil. Soil type had no effect on numbers of EPNs in samples, but EPNs were detected more frequently (P = 0.01) in plots of sandy soil than native soil in 2011. Two nematophagous fungi species, Paecilomyces lilacinus and Catenaria sp. were significantly more abundant in nematode samples from sandy soil on all three sampling dates. Efficacy of EPNs against weevil larvae was greater in sandy soil inoculated with S. diaprepesi (P = 0.03) in June 2010 and in all treatments in sandy soil in May 2011 (P = 0.03). Sixty-eight percent more adult weevils (P = 0.01) were trapped emerging from native soil during two years than from sandy soil. By May 2011, the cumulative number of weevils emerging from each plot was inversely related (P = 0.01) to the numbers of EPNs detected in plots and to EPN efficacy against sentinels. Three trees in sandy soil died as a result of root herbivory compared to 21 trees in native soil. Surviving trees in sandy soil had trunk diameters that were 60% larger (P = 0.001) and produced 85% more fruit (P = 0.001) than those in native soil. Although it is not possible to characterize all of the mechanisms by which the two soil treatments affected weevils and trees, substitution of sand for native soil was an effective means of conserving EPNs and shows promise as a cultural practice to manage D. abbreviatus in flatwoods citrus orchards with a history of weevil damage to trees.  相似文献

We studied the growth and photosynthesis of the hybrid larch F1 (Larix gmelinii var. japonica × L. kaempferi) grown on serpentine soil and the effects of soil N load, to determine the performance of this species as reforestation material in serpentine regions. We prepared 16 experimental plots (2 m × 4 m each), eight on serpentine and eight on brown forest soil, and planted one-year-old cutting seedlings of the hybrid larch F1 in each plot, in May 2007. Ammonium sulfate was supplied to half of the plots of each soil type in 2008 and 2009, at a load of 47 kg N ha−1 year−1. Although the growth and photosynthetic capacity of hybrid larch F1 seedlings in the serpentine soil were limited, the rate of growth in serpentine soil was greater than that of Sakhalin spruce (Picea glehnii) that is dominant species in serpentine regions. There was significant interaction between soil type and N load for the growth and photosynthetic parameters. The N load adversely affected growth and photosynthetic parameters in the serpentine soil, while improved them in brown forest soil. Although the growth rate of hybrid larch F1 without N loading showed high potential as an afforestation species in serpentine region, increasing deposition of N might be a threat to the growth and photosynthesis of the hybrid larch F1 in serpentine soil.  相似文献

It has been hypothesized that a diverse vegetation cover with a high number of plant species and plant functional groups may be more effective at governing soil erosion processes than a vegetation cover with few species and fewer different plant functional groups. We investigated the influence of plant cover and diversity on interrill erosion on a disturbed alpine site. Rainfall simulations were conducted on micro-scale plots (25 × 25 cm) with different degrees of vegetation cover and plant functional group diversity. We selected plots with 10%, 30% and 60% of vegetation cover containing different plant functional groups: (i) grasses, (ii) forbs, (iii) cryptogams (moss and/or lichens), and all possible combinations of these three groups. On each plot a rain intensity of 375 ml min?1 (30 mm) was applied for 5 min. The degree of vegetation cover had the largest effect on interrill erosion. At 60% vegetation cover, the sediment yield was reduced by 83% in comparison to the un-vegetated ground. In the plots with 60% vegetation cover, an increase in functional group diversity decreased the sediment yield significantly. Sediment yield was three times lower in the presence of three plant functional groups than in systems with one plant functional group. Combinations of plant functional groups including grasses reduced the sediment yield more than other combinations. The findings of this study support the view that beside the re-establishment of a closed vegetation cover, a high plant functional diversity can be a relevant factor to further reduce interrill erosion at disturbed sites in alpine ecosystems.  相似文献

The restoration of steep rock faces with shrubs and trees is difficult due to extreme microclimatic and edaphic conditions. In this study, we tested the applicability of free-standing planted gabions to improve the landscape and achieve protection against rockfall, erosion and enhanced surface flow. Furthermore, we analyzed the effect of preconditioning on drought tolerance of several planted species (Ligustrum vulgare, Viburnum lantana, Juniperus communis and Pinus sylvestris).Planted gabions showed sufficient mechanical stability, but survival rates of planted shrubs and trees were reduced by drought stress. Soil water potential on the gabions decreased several times below ?1.4 MPa and soil temperature increased up to 30 °C in summer and decreased below ?6 °C in winter. The percentage of surviving individuals was correlated with the species’ resistance to drought-induced embolism. Drought tolerance was overall higher in conifer species, while angiosperm species were able to shift their vulnerability thresholds upon preconditioning. We conclude that free-standing planted gabions may be an alternative technique for restoration and securing of critical parts of steep rocky slopes. Preconditioning of plant material used for restoration of drought-prone sites can increase the drought tolerance of some species.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to determine the short-term effects of fire on nitrogen and phosphorus soil concentration in heathland sites dominated by Calluna vulgaris in the Cantabrian Mountain range (NW Spain). Three C. vulgaris heathlands sites (San Isidro, Riopinos I and Riopinos II) were selected. In June 2005, one plot (20 m × 20 m) per site was subjected to an experimental fire and the other was used as a control. Immediately after the fire, ten ash samples and ten soil samples (at a depth of 5 cm) were collected and thoroughly mixed. Soil moisture, temperature, total N, NH4+, NO3?, total P, available P and pH were determined in each sample. The quantity of ashes deposited was 300 g/m2, with a pH of 9, low N content but higher P concentrations. Significant differences in temperature and soil moisture were detected between the fire-treated and control plots. No significant differences for soil pH, total and available P, total N and NO3? concentration were found between the treatments. However, the concentration of ammoniacal-N indicated a significant increase 11 months post-fire and was produced by the changes in environmental soil conditions after the fire. Our results show that low intensity fires do not modify the concentration of N and P in the soil. However, post-fire conditions favour an increase in ammoniacal-N one year later.  相似文献

Effects of supplementing willow stem cuttings to ewes grazing drought pastures upon plasma amino acid (AA) concentrations was studied on Massey University's Riverside Farm, near Masteron, on the East Coast of New Zealand. Ewes of similar age and weight (i.e., 59.0 ± 2.22 kg) were assigned to two groups of 7 each, either with (supplemented) or without (control) supplementation of willow, and experimental grazing was carried for 10 weeks from early February until mid April of 2005. Live weight (LW) was recorded fortnightly and body condition score (BCS) was monthly. Blood samples for quantification of plasma amino acids were collected at week 5 and 10. Both groups had a similar pre-grazing pasture mass (i.e., 2000 kg of dry matter/ha) and dead matter content (0.80) with the diet selected by the ewes containing a metabolisable energy (ME) of 8.3 MJ/kg DM, which is typical of drought conditions. The willow was readily eaten, with intake averaging 0.26 kg DM/ewe/d. Willow was of higher ME content than short drought pasture (i.e., 10.1 versus 8.4 MJ/kg DM) and contained condensed tannins at 40.8 ± 1.97 g/kg DM. Both groups of ewes lost live weight at about 50 g/d. Plasma concentration of 3-methyl histidine (88 versus 127 μmol/L) at week 5 and non-essential amino acids (1082 versus 1417 μmol/L) at week 5 and (1155 versus 1324 μmol/L) at week 10, were substantially lower (P<0.05) in willow supplemented versus control ewes, indicating that willow supplementation reduced catabolism of body proteins in ewes under drought feeding conditions.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to (i) investigate parameters influencing the fluxes of the greenhouse gas methane (CH4) in Danish riparian wetlands with contrasting vegetation characteristics and (ii) develop models relating CH4 emissions to soil and/or vegetation parameters integrating the spatial and temporal variability in the fluxes. Fluxes of CH4 were monitored in 12 wetland plots over a year using static chambers, yielding a dataset with more than 800 measured fluxes of CH4. Yearly emissions of CH4 ranged from −0.2 to 38.3 g CH4-C m−2 year−1, and significant effects of groundwater level, soil temperature (10 cm depth), peat depth, sulfate, nitrate, and soil carbon content were found. Two methods based on easily available environmental parameters to estimate yearly CH4 emissions from riparian wetlands are presented. The first uses a generalized linear model (GLM) to predict yearly CH4 emissions based on the humidity preference of vegetation (Ellenberg-F), peat depth and degree of humification of the peat (von Post index). The second method relies solely on plant species composition and uses weighted-average regression and calibration to link the vegetation assemblage to yearly CH4 emission. Both models gave reliable predictions of the yearly CH4 fluxes in riparian wetlands (modeling efficiency > 0.35). Our findings support the use of vegetation, possibly in combination with some soil parameters such as peat depth, as indicator of CH4 emission in wetlands.  相似文献

The identification of shape and size of sampling units that maximises the number of plant species recorded in multiscale sampling designs has major implications in conservation planning and monitoring actions. In this paper we tested the effect of three sampling shapes (rectangles, squared, and randomly shaped sampling units) on the number of recorded species. We used a large dataset derived from the network of protected areas in the Siena Province, Italy. This dataset is composed of plant species occurrence data recorded from 604 plots (10 m × 10 m), each divided in a grid of 16 contiguous subplot units (2.5 m × 2.5 m). Moreover, we evaluated the effect of plot orientation along the main environmental gradient, to examine how the selection of plot orientation (when elongated plots are used) influences the number of species collected. In total, 1041 plant species were recorded from the study plots. A significantly higher species richness was recorded by the random arrangement of 4 subplots within each plot in comparison to the ‘rectangle’ and ‘square’ shapes. Although the rectangular shape captured a significant larger number of species than squared ones, plot orientation along the main environmental gradient did not show a systematic effect on the number of recorded species. We concluded that the choice of whether or not using elongated (rectangular) versus squared plots should dependent upon the objectives of the specific survey with squared plots being more suitable for assessing species composition of more homogeneous vegetation units and rectangular plots being more suited for recording more species in the pooled sample of a large area.  相似文献

Early survival and growth of black alder, silver birch and Scots pine were investigated on reclaimed extremely stony and heterogeneous calcareous (pH 8) opencast oil shale mining areas (OOSMAs). Biomass allocation, production, leaf and root adaptations, and mineral nutrition in relation to tree species and soil heterogeneity were analysed. The adaptive strategies of tree species in first-year plantations on OOSMA were different. Scots pine allocated 1.5–2 times more biomass into leaves and fine roots than deciduous trees. The lower leaf/fine root biomass ratio was in proportion to the better survival (%) of seedlings, decreasing in the following order: black alder (93%)  Scots pine (83%) > silver birch (64%). Deciduous trees improved mineral nutrition more by fine-root morphological adaptations than Scots pine; e.g. the mean specific root length (SRL, m g?1) of short roots increased in the following order: Scots pine (62) < black alder (172) < silver birch (314). The effect of soil heterogeneity on growth and adaptations was minor. All studied species suffered from P and N, and deciduous species also from K deficiency. In the first year after planting, black alder was best adapted to the harsh conditions of the post-mining substrate. The approaches of this study can be used for other regions where wastelands require reclamation.  相似文献

Drainage and shrub expansion are the main threats to the biodiversity of fens and fen meadows, whereas rewetting and the removal of shrubby species are frequently applied restoration measures. We examine whether removal of shrubs enhances recovery of target species in a degraded fen subjected to moderate rewetting. The study was located in the drained fen Ca?owanie (central Poland), where remnants of open fen communities and willow-invaded fens exist in former turf-pits, surrounded by degraded meadows on dried peat. All these three habitat types were included in a monitoring grid, which covered an area of 2.2 ha. Within 55 quadrats of 20 m × 20 m we monitored occurrence of 52 species, i.e. two groups of target species (fen indicators and wet meadow indicators) and indicators of two failure scenarios (degraded fen indicators and eutrophic wetland indicators), during six years following shrub removal, rewetting and re-application of conservational mowing, using a 3-step ordinal abundance scale. NMDS ordination revealed a gradual convergence of shrub removal plots and reference plots. We noticed significant effects of year and habitat type on all indicator groups, but only fen indicators have shown a clear (increasing) trend within shrub removal plots. Degraded fen indicators (ruderal and opportunistic species) initially expanded on shrub removal plots, but this effect disappeared in the following years. We conclude that shrub removal enhances establishment of target species in a moderately drained and then rewetted fen and attribute this effect to lowered competition for light. However, given high costs of this method and long-lasting problems with shrub resprouts, we recommend applying shrub removal only to recently overgrown sites, which still retained high botanical diversity. Heavily degraded fen meadows did not react on the increase of moisture, which indicates that more advanced restoration measures, such as top soil removal are needed there.  相似文献

Species-based ecological indices, such as Ellenberg indicators, reflect plant habitat preferences and can be used to describe local environment conditions. One disadvantage of using vegetation data as a substitute for environmental data is the fact that extensive floristic sampling can usually only be carried out at a plot scale within limited geographical areas. Remotely sensed data have the potential to provide information on fine-scale vegetation properties over large areas. In the present study, we examine whether airborne hyperspectral remote sensing can be used to predict Ellenberg nutrient (N) and moisture (M) values in plots in dry grazed grasslands within a local agricultural landscape in southern Sweden. We compare the prediction accuracy of three categories of model: (I) models based on predefined vegetation indices (VIs), (II) models based on waveband-selected VIs, and (III) models based on the full set of hyperspectral wavebands. We also identify the optimal combination of wavebands for the prediction of Ellenberg values. The floristic composition of 104 (4 m × 4 m grassland) plots on the Baltic island of Öland was surveyed in the field, and the vascular plant species recorded in the plots were assigned Ellenberg indicator values for N and M. A community-weighted mean value was calculated for N (mN) and M (mM) within each plot. Hyperspectral data were extracted from an 8 m × 8 m pixel window centred on each plot. The relationship between field-observed and predicted mean Ellenberg values was significant for all three categories of prediction models. The performance of the category II and III models was comparable, and they gave lower prediction errors and higher R2 values than the category I models for both mN and mM. Visible and near-infrared wavebands were important for the prediction of both mN and mM, and shortwave infrared wavebands were also important for the prediction of mM. We conclude that airborne hyperspectral remote sensing can detect spectral differences in vegetation between grassland plots characterised by different mean Ellenberg N and M values, and that remote sensing technology can potentially be used to survey fine-scale variation in environmental conditions within a local agricultural landscape.  相似文献

Invasions by alien plants significantly affect native biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. We conducted a 5-year field experiment to investigate potential effects of the annual invasive plant Impatiens glandulifera on both the native above-ground vegetation and the soil seed bank in a deciduous forest in Switzerland. Eight years after the establishment of I. glandulifera, we set up plots in patches invaded by the alien plant, in plots from which the invasive plant had been manually removed and in plots which were not yet colonized by the invasive plant. We examined plant species richness, diversity and plant species composition in the above-ground vegetation and soil seed bank in all plots one year and five years after the initiation of the experiment. The 36 plots (3 plot types × 6 replicates × 2 sites) were equally distributed over two forest sites. Neither the native above-ground vegetation nor the soil seed bank was influenced by the presence of I. glandulifera one year after the start of the field experiment. After five years, however, plant species richness of both the above-ground vegetation and the soil seed bank was reduced by 25% and 30%, respectively, in plots invaded by the alien plant compared to plots from which I. glandulifera had been removed or uninvaded plots. Furthermore, plots invaded by the alien plant had a lower total seedling density (reduction by 60%) and an altered plant species composition in the soil seed bank compared to control plots. Our field experiment indicates that negative effects of the annual invasive plant on the native above-ground vegetation and soil seed bank of deciduous forests become visible with a delay of several years.  相似文献

Several studies have argued that under field conditions plant–soil feedback may be related to the local density of a plant species, but plant–soil feedback is often studied by comparing conspecific and heterospecific soils or by using mixed soil samples collected from different locations and plant densities. We examined whether the growth of the early successional species Jacobaea vulgaris in soil collected from the field is related to the local variation in plant density of this species. In a grassland restoration site, we selected eight 8 m × 8 m plots, four with high and four with low densities of J. vulgaris plants. In 16 subplots in each plot we recorded the density and size of J. vulgaris, and characteristics of the vegetation and the soil chemistry. Soil collected from each subplot was used in a greenhouse pot-experiment to study the growth of J. vulgaris, both in pure field soil and in sterile soil inoculated with a small part of field soil.In the field, flowering J. vulgaris plants were taller, the percentage of rosette plants was higher and seed density was larger in High- than in Low-density plots. In the pot experiment, J. vulgaris had a negative plant–soil feedback, but biomass was also lower in soil collected from High- than from Low-density plots, although only when growing in inoculated soil. Regression analyses showed that J. vulgaris biomass of plants growing in pure soil was related to soil nutrients, but also to J. vulgaris density in the field. We conclude that in the field there is local variation in the negative plant–soil feedback of J. vulgaris and that this variation can be explained by the local density of J. vulgaris, but also by other factors such as nutrient availability.  相似文献

The use of willow cuttings for streambank stabilization is a common practice in riparian ecosystems throughout the United States. Many environmental factors govern the outcome of such planting. However, other factors such as preplanting treatments, planting methods, and physiological status of cuttings (dormant vs. actively growing) may also be crucial in determining the survival of willow cuttings. Actively growing (nondormant) Black willow (Salix nigra) cuttings, 30 cm in length and 1 cm in diameter at the base, were subjected to three soaking treatments (0, 7, and 15 days) prior to planting. Following the initial treatment, cuttings were grown in a greenhouse in pots under three soil moisture regimes (well‐watered but not flooded, permanently flooded, and intermittently flooded). Plant gas exchange, growth, biomass, and survival were measured. Results demonstrated that soaking for 7 days was beneficial to early development of cuttings in the well‐watered (control) soil moisture regime, enhancing percent bud flush and survival significantly. However, 15 days of soaking proved to be detrimental to survival of cuttings irrespective of soil moisture regimes. Results also demonstrated that the beneficial effects of 7‐day soaking were limited to the well‐watered soil moisture regime but not to the flooded or intermittently flooded regimes. Soaking nondormant cuttings may be worthwhile if the planting site is likely to present ample soil moisture but nonflooded conditions to the transplanted cuttings.  相似文献

The Three Gorges Project in China has brought significant changes to the region's riparian environment, posing serious challenges to biodiversity conservation. Salix variegata is a native shrub distributed on riverbanks in the Three Gorges reservoir region, and has important ecological function in the community. In this study, we studied the ecology of seed germination of S. variegata as efforts to understand its spatial distribution and develop conservation strategies. We found that soil type, soil moisture content and temperature all had significant effects on seed germination in S. variegata. Germination rate increased with the increasing soil moisture, while decreased in over-saturated soil. The germination rate in riverbank sand was higher than in sandy soil and clay loam. The optimal temperature for seed germination was 24 °C, under which 100% of germination was reached in 7 days. Seed viability and germination declined significantly with time after being released from fruits. The results suggest that soil moisture is the determining factor on seed germination, and influenced distribution of S. variegata. The tributary riverbanks above 175 m in the Three Gorges reservoir region can be used for the conservation of the species, as their fluvial patterns should have not been disturbed by the hydropower project.  相似文献

Membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS) was used to monitor continuously and simultaneously the concentrations of dissolved gases (O2, CO2, CH4) within the treatment bed of a willow vegetation filter treating leachate at a landfill site in mid Wales. The distribution of dissolved gasses within the bed was shown to be highly heterogeneous at the small spatial scale with considerable variation between vertical profiles measured simultaneously at different locations. In general, aerobic conditions were observed above the water table with reduced levels of oxygen and increasing levels of carbon dioxide and methane below it. Distinct pockets of oxygen (up to 200 μM) were observed in anaerobic zones and pockets of reduced oxygen and elevated carbon dioxide were observed in the aerobic zone. Pockets of methane were observed in some profiles coexisting with up to 200 μM oxygen at 5 cm depth. These observations confirm the hypothesis that micro-sites exists within the soil/root matrix where aerobic organic matter decomposition and anaerobic processes such as methanogenesis can occur in relatively close proximity to each other. We hypothesise that the distribution of dissolved gases is determined by rapid diffusion of air maintaining aerobic conditions above the water table, removal of oxygen by microbial processes creating anaerobic conditions below the water table and the distribution of willow roots in the soil which create local aerobic zones by oxygen release.  相似文献

This study investigates the potential of using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) to estimate root zone soil moisture at native in-situ measured sites, and at distant sites under the same climatic setting. We obtained in-situ data from Soil Climate Analysis Network (SCAN) sites near the Texas-New Mexico border area, and NDVI and EVI products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor on board the Terra satellite. Results show that soil moisture values of the same depth are highly correlated (r = 0.53 to 0.85) among sites as far as 150 km apart, and that NDVI and EVI are highly correlated at the same site (r = 0.87 to 0.91). Correlation based on raw time series of NDVI and soil moisture is in general higher than that based on deseasonalized time series at every depth. The correlation reaches maximum value when vegetation index (VI) lags soil moisture by 5 to 10 days. NDVI shows a slightly higher correlation with soil moisture than EVI does by using the deseasonalized time series of NDVI and soil moisture. It is found that deseasonalized time series of NDVI and soil moisture are correlated at native sites (r = 0.33 to 0.77), but not at sites where soil moisture is very low. Regression analysis was conducted using deseasonalized time series soil moisture and deseasonalized time series NDVI with a 5-day time lag. Regression models developed at one site and applied to a similar distant site can estimate soil moistures, accounting for 50–88% of the variation in observed soil moistures.  相似文献
