The main objective of this study was to quantify nutrient transport dynamics of a previously ungauged, temperate watershed (145 km2) surrounding a shallow eutrophic lake and discern lake response to external nutrient loading, based on soil water assessment tool (SWAT) and the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) empirical lake models, respectively. A SWAT model was used to simulate baseline nutrient dynamics after its calibration and validation against daily tributary flow, total dissolved phosphorus (TDP), total phosphorus (TP), and nitrate (NO3) loads. On the watershed scale, median annual TDP, TP, and NO3 losses were 0.4, 1.1, and 2.0 kg ha 1, respectively. The highest median annual TP and NO3 losses were estimated at 3.7 and 7.7 kg ha 1 for pastureland and 1.7 and 3.8 kg ha 1 for cropland and mixed forests, respectively. Baseflow was the major nutrient transport pathway over a wide range of precipitation events (450 to 900 mm yr 1). Erosion was the predominant surface process exporting P across the watershed. Critical source areas (CSAs) of TP and NO3 comprised 17% and 4% of the watershed, respectively. Annual mean TP, and mean and maximum chlorophyll content indicated a hyper-eutrophication risk for the lake. An external P load reduction by excess of 80% could be necessary to restore mesotrophy in the lake. Our results suggested that subsurface P transport should not be overlooked a priori when groundwater-dependent and extensively farmed watersheds are managed for eutrophication abatement.  相似文献

A natural wetland of about 12 000 m2 along the east coast of Lake Taihu was separated into five subzones with different macrophyte structures to investigate their nutrient removal dynamics. Wastewater was continuously pumped into the wetland from July 2008 to June 2009 at an average rate of 22 m3/h. Neighboring natural wetland with high density of macrophyte was chosen as a comparison site. The removal of TN, TDN, TP, and TDP in the experimental wetlands as a whole was about 79.3, 54.5, 4.5, and 3.4 kg, respectively. The decrease of nitrogen concentration was more pronounced in winter (January–March) 2009, representing a respective reduction of 46.4%, 48.0%, and 47.9% in TN, TDN, and NH4–N concentration. Results reveal a higher nutrient removal potential in wetland dominated by Typha orientalis Presl, Zizania latifolia Turcz, and Hemarthria sibirica under high nutrient load. However, areas dominated by Zizania latifolia Turcz, Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn, and Ceratophyllum demersum L. had better purification performance when the above-water-surface macrophytes were harvested frequently. Dissolved oxygen, pH, and oxidation–reduction potential decreased with the increase of the percentage of Zizania latifolia Turcz-dominated macrophytes. High nutrient concentration in the comparison site and net increase of NH4–N in Z1 indicate the possibility of water re-pollution by intense macrophyte decomposition. Furthermore, results suggest that harvesting macrophytes has potential ability in nitrogen, especially ammonium nitrogen removal, and hence could be considered in wetland construction for lake restoration.  相似文献

The effects of wastewater loading rates and two macrophyte species on treatment of sugar factory stabilization pond effluent were investigated in a pilot-scale free water surface constructed wetland (FWS CW) system in western Kenya. For 12 months, four CWs were operated at a hydraulic loading rate of 75 mm day−1 and four at 225 mm day−1. Half the CWs were planted with Cyperus papyrus and half with Echinochloa pyramidalis. Water samples were taken at the inlets and outlets and analyzed for TP, TDP, NH4-N, and TSS. Mass removal rates of the selected water quality parameters were compared during three periods designated the short rain (period 1), dry (period 2), and long rain (period 3) seasons. There was a significant linear relationship between the mass removal rate of TP, NH4-N, and TSS and the mass load, and season had a significant effect on the mass removal rate of TSS, NH4-N, and TDP. Mass loading rates for TDP were about 78% of those for TP, whereas TDP comprised 78–99% of TP mass outflow rates, indicating a release of dissolved P within the CWs. The only significant difference between the two macrophyte species was associated with mass removal of NH4-N, with more efficient removal in CWs planted with C. papyrus than those with E. pyramidalis. TP mass removal rates were 50–80% higher when a mean water loss for CWs 6–8 during periods 1 and 2 was assumed to represent evapotranspiration for all CWs in period 3 instead of pan evaporation data. This illustrated the importance of accurate estimations of evapotranspiration for pollutant mass removal rates in CWs in tropical climates.  相似文献

A free-water surface wetland covering an area of 2800 m2 was operated from March 2002 to June 2004 for agricultural runoff treatment in the Dianchi Valley in China. In the wetland were grown Zizania Caduciflora Turez Hand-mazt and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin.ex Steud. The instantaneous inflow rate was measured and the integrated flux was recorded by an ultrasonic flow instrument all year round. The average inflow rate, hydraulic loading rate (HLR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) were kept at 242 m3 d?1, 12.7 cm d?1 and 2.0 d, respectively. The annual average total phosphorus (TP) in the inflow was 0.87 mg L?1, and the corresponding removal efficiency was calculated to be 59.0%. Biannual plant uptake and removal by harvesting and seed transport was the main pathway for TP removal, while the influent TP load was 12.9 g m?2 year?1. Hydraulic retention time had a significant positive correlation with the removal of P (r2 = 0.88). Water temperature, inflow phosphorus load, inflow and hydraulic load rates were positively correlated with the removal of P. Inflow phosphorus concentrations were negatively correlated with the removal of P. It is shown that the free-water surface wetland was an effective and economical system for agricultural runoff treatment in lake regions.  相似文献

Aquatic macroinvertebrates have been among the principal biological communities used for freshwater monitoring and assessment for several decades, but macroinvertebrate biomonitoring has not incorporated nutrient measures into assessment strategies. Two nutrient biotic indices were developed for benthic macroinvertebrate communities, one for total phosphorus (NBI-P), and one for nitrate (NBI-N). Weighted averaging was used to assess the distributions of 164 macroinvertebrate taxa across TP and NO3 gradients and to establish nutrient optima and subsequent nutrient tolerance values. Both the NBI-P and NBI-N were correlated with increasing mean TP and NO3 values (r = 0.68 and r = 0.57, respectively, p < 0.0001). A three-tiered scale of eutrophication for TP and NO3 (oligotrophic: ≤0.0175 mg/l TP, ≤0.24 mg/l NO3, mesotrophic: >0.0175 to ≤0.065 mg/l TP, >0.24 to ≤0.98 mg/l NO3, eutrophic: >0.065 mg/l TP, >0.98 mg/l NO3) was also established through cluster analysis of invertebrate communities using Bray–Curtis (quantitative) similarity. Significant differences (p < 0.0001) were detected between median NBI-P and NBI-N scores among the three trophic states. Therefore, the nutrient biotic indices (NBIs) appear to accurately reflect changes in stream trophic state. Multimetric water quality assessments were also used to identify thresholds of impairment among the three trophic states. Hodges-Lehman estimation indicated that the greatest change in assessment results occurred between the mesotrophic and eutrophic states. The eutrophic state also represented the highest percentage of overall impairment. Therefore, the suggested threshold for nutrient impairment is the boundary between mesotrophic and eutrophic (0.065 mg/l TP and 0.98 mg/l NO3). The corresponding NBI-P score (6.1) and NBI-N score (6.0) for this threshold incorporate predictive capabilities into the NBIs. The NBI and index score thresholds of impairment will provide monitoring programs with a robust measure of stream nutrient status and serve as a useful tool in enforcing regional nutrient criteria.  相似文献

The treatment capacity of constructed wetlands is expected to be high in tropical areas because of the warm temperatures and the associated higher rates of microbial activity. A pilot scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland system filled with river sand and planted with Phragmites vallatoria (L.) Veldkamp was set up in the southern part of Vietnam to assess the treatment capacity and the removal rate kinetics under tropical conditions. The system received municipal wastewater at four hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) of 31, 62, 104 and 146 mm day?1. Removals of TSS, BOD5 and COD were efficient at all HLRs with mean removal rates of 86–95%, 65–83% and 57–84%, respectively. Removals of N and P decreased with HLRs and were: NH4-N 0–91%; TN 16–84% and TP 72–99%. First-order area-based removal rate constants (k, m year?1) estimated from sampling along the length of the wetland from inlet to outlet at the four HLRs were in the range of 25–95 (BOD5), 22–30 (COD), 31–115 (TSS), 5–24 (TN and TKN) and 41–84 (TP) at background concentrations (C*) of 5, 10, 0, 1.5 and 0 mg L?1, respectively. The estimated k-values should not be used for design purposes, as site-specific differences and stochastic variability can be high. However, the study shows that domestic wastewater can be treated in horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland systems to meet even the most stringent Vietnamese standards for discharge into surface waters.  相似文献

The biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen (N) and base cations (BCs), (i.e., K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+), play critical roles in plant nutrition and ecosystem function. Empirical correlations between large experimental N fertilizer additions to forest ecosystems and increased BCs loss in stream water are well demonstrated, but the mechanisms driving this coupling remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that protons generated through N transformation (PPRN)—quantified as the balance of NH4+ (H+ source) and NO3 (H+ sink) in precipitation versus the stream output will impact BCs loss in acid-sensitive ecosystems. To test this hypothesis, we monitored precipitation input and stream export of inorganic N and BCs for three years in an acid-sensitive forested watershed in a granite area of subtropical China. We found the precipitation input of inorganic N (17.71 kg N ha−1 year−1 with 54% as NH4+–N) was considerably higher than stream exported inorganic N (5.99 kg N ha−1 year−1 with 83% as NO3–N), making the watershed a net N sink. The stream export of BCs (151, 1518, 851, and 252 mol ha−1 year−1 for K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+, respectively) was positively correlated (r = 0.80, 0.90, 0.84, and 0.84 for K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ on a monthly scale, respectively, P < 0.001, n = 36) with PPRN (389 mol ha−1 year−1) over the three years, suggesting that PPRN drives loss of BCs in the acid-sensitive ecosystem. A global meta-analysis of 15 watershed studies from non-calcareous ecosystems further supports this hypothesis by showing a similarly strong correlation between ∑BCs output and PPRN (r = 0.89, P < 0.001, n = 15), in spite of the pronounced differences in environmental settings. Collectively, our results suggest that N transformations rather than anions (NO3 and/or SO42−) leaching specifically, are an important mediator of BCs loss in acid-senstive ecosystems. Our study provides the first definitive evidence that the chronic N deposition and subsequent transformation within the watershed drive stream export of BCs through proton production in acid-sensitive ecosystems, irrespective of their current relatively high N retention. Our findings suggest the N-transformation-based proton production can be used as an indicator of watershed outflow quality in the acid-sensitive ecosystems.  相似文献

Temperate wetlands in the Northern Hemisphere have high long-term carbon sequestration rates, and play critical roles in mitigating regional and global atmospheric CO2 increases at the century timescale. We measured soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) from 11 typical freshwater wetlands (Heilongjiang Province) and one saline wetland (Jilin Province) in Northeast China, and estimated carbon sequestration rates using 210Pb and 137Cs dating technology. Effects of climate, net primary productivity, and nutrient availability on carbon sequestration rates (Rcarbon) were also evaluated. Chronological results showed that surface soil within the 0–40 cm depth formed during the past 70–205 years. Soil accretion rates ranged from 2.20 to 5.83 mm yr−1, with an average of 3.84 ± 1.25 mm yr−1 (mean ± SD). Rcarbon ranged from 61.60 to 318.5 gC m−2 yr−1 and was significantly different among wetland types. Average Rcarbon was 202.7 gC m−2 yr−1 in the freshwater wetlands and 61.6 gC m−2 yr−1 in the saline marsh. About 1.04 × 108 tons of carbon was estimated to be captured by temperate wetland soils annually in Heilongjiang Province (in the scope of 45.381–51.085°N, 125.132–132.324°E). Correlation analysis showed little impact of net primary productivity (NPP) and soil nutrient contents on Rcarbon, whereas climate, specifically the combined dynamics of temperature and precipitation, was the predominant factor affecting Rcarbon. The negative relationship observed between Rcarbon and annual mean temperature (T) indicates that warming in Northeast China could reduce Rcarbon. Significant positive relationships were observed between annual precipitation (P), the hydrothermal coefficient (defined as P/AT, where AT was accumulative temperature ≥10 °C), and Rcarbon, indicating that a cold, humid climate would enhance Rcarbon. Current climate change in Northeast China, characterized by warming and drought, may form positive feedbacks with Rcarbon in temperate wetlands and accelerate carbon loss from wetland soils.  相似文献

In 2001, to foster the practical development of constructed wetlands (CWs) used for domestic wastewater treatment in Turkey, vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands (30 m2 of each) were implemented on the campus of the METU, Ankara, Turkey. The main objective of the research was to quantify the effect of different filter media on the treatment performance of vertical flow wetlands in the prevailing climate of Ankara. Thus, a gravel-filled wetland and a blast furnace granulated iron slag-filled wetland were operated identically with primarily treated domestic wastewater (3 m3 d−1) at a hydraulic loading rate of 0.100 m d−1, intermittently. Both of the wetland cells were planted with Phragmites australis. According to the first year results, average removal efficiencies for the slag and gravel wetland cells were as follows: total suspended solids (TSS) (63% and 59%), chemical oxygen demand (COD) (47% and 44%), NH4+–N (88% and 53%), total nitrogen (TN) (44% and 39%), PO43−-P (44% and 1%) and total phosphorus (TP) (45% and 4%). The treatment performances of the slag-filled wetland were better than that of the gravel-filled wetland in terms of removal of phosphorus and production of nitrate. Since this study was a pioneer for implementation of subsurface constructed wetlands in Turkey using local sources, it has proved that this eco-technology could also be used effectively for water quality enhancement in Turkey.  相似文献

This paper reports on the feasibility of using sub-surface horizontal flow constructed wetlands to treat municipal wastewater in Hong Kong. Two different hydraulic retention times (10-day and 5-day) and different types of treatments (with and without vegetation) were investigated. Better performance in the planted treatments was obtained in both hydraulic retention time treatments. Nutrients were better removed in treatments with plants (DOC 68% and 72%; NH4-N 92% and 95%; TKN 65% and 62%; PO4-P 79% and 72%; TP 67% and 52% for 10-day HRT; 5-day HRT treatments). In the unplanted treatments, negative values were achieved in the removal of phosphate in wastewater and the presence of plants could further polish the wastewater so phosphate concentrations decreased in the planted treatments. The effluent concentrations in the planted treatments meet the Inland Water A effluent standard, and they can be used in recreation park in Hong Kong (1 mg L−1 of NOx; 15 mg L−1 of NH3; 1 mg L−1 of TP).  相似文献

The ability of vertical flow (VF) constructed wetland systems to treat high-strength (ca. 300 mg L?1 of COD and ca. 300 mg L?1 total-nitrogen) wastewater under tropical climatic conditions was studied during a 5-month period. Nine 0.8-m diameter experimental VF units (depth 0.6 m) were used: three units were planted with Typha angustifolia L., another three units were planted with Cyperus involucratus Rottb and three units were unplanted. Each set of units were operated at hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) of 20, 50 and 80 mm d?1. Cyperus produced more shoots and biomass than the Typha, which was probably stressed because of lack of water. The high evapotranspirative water loss from the Cyperus systems resulted in higher effluent concentrations of COD and total-P, but the mass removal of COD did not differ significantly between planted and unplanted systems. Average mass removal rates of COD, TKN and total-P at a HLR of 80 mm d?1 were 17.8, 15.4 and 0.69 g m?2 d?1. The first-order removal rate constants at a HLR of 80 mm d?1 for COD, TKN and total-P were 49.8, 30.1 and 13.5 m year?1, respectively, which is in the higher range of k-values reported in the literature. The oxygen transfer rates were ca. 80 g m?2 d?1 in the planted systems as opposed to ca. 60 g m?2 d?1 in the unplanted systems. The number of Nitrosomonas was two to three orders of magnitude higher in the planted systems compared to the unplanted systems. Planted systems thus had significantly higher removal rates of nitrogen and phosphorus, higher oxygen transfer rates, and higher quantities of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria. None of the systems did, however, fully nitrify the wastewater, even at low loading rates. The vertical filters did not provide sufficient contact time between the wastewater and the biofilm on the gravel medium of the filters probably because of the shallow bed depth (0.6 m) and the coarse texture of the gravel. It is concluded that vertical flow constructed wetland systems have a high capacity to treat high-strength wastewater in tropical climates. The gravel and sand matrix of the vertical filter must, however, be designed in a way so that the pulse-loaded wastewater can pass through the filter medium at a speed that will allow the water to drain before the next dose arrives whilst at the same time holding the water back long enough to allow sufficient contact with the biofilm on the filter medium.  相似文献

In this study, we apply an integrated empirical and mechanism approach to estimate a comprehensive long-term (1953–2012) total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) loading budget for the eutrophic Lake Chaohu in China. This budget is subsequently validated, firstly, by comparing with the available measured data in several years, and secondly, by model simulations for long-term nutrient dynamics using both Vollenweider (VW) model and dynamic nonlinear (DyN) model. Results show that the estimated nutrient budget is applicable for further evaluations. Surprisingly, nutrient loading from non-point sources (85% for TN and 77% for TP on average) is higher than expectation, suggesting the importance of nutrient flux from the soil in the basin. In addition, DyN model performs relatively better than VW model, which is attributed to both the additional sediment recycling process and the parameters adjusted by the Bayesian-based Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. DyN model further shows that the TP loading thresholds from the clear to turbid state (631.8 ± 290.16 t y−1) and from the turbid to clear state (546.0 ± 319.80 t y−1) are significantly different (p < 0.01). Nevertheless, the uncertainty ranges of the thresholds are largely overlapped, which is consistent with the results that the eutrophication of Lake Chaohu is more likely to be reversible (74.12%) than hysteretic (25.53%). The ecosystem of Lake Chaohu shifted from the clear to turbid state during late 1970s. For managers, approximately two-thirds of the current TP loading must be reduced for a shift back with substantial improvement in water quality. Because in practice the reduction of loading from a non-point source is very difficult and costly, additional methods beyond nutrient reduction, such as water level regulation, should be considered for the lake restoration.  相似文献

We performed a mesocosms experiment using a vertical-flow wetland system to treat liquid sludge in the Mediterranean region. Three common helophyte species, common reed (Phragmites australis Cav.), broadleaf cattail (Typha latifolia L.), and yellow flag (Iris pseudacorus L.), were planted as monoculture and irrigated with a liquid sewage sludge from a food industry, characterised by very high organic concentrations (COD > 8000 mg/L). We studied the benefits of plants by comparing unplanted to planted mesocosms. Results showed the high performance of such vertical-flow wetland systems. Removal efficiency was more than 98% for total suspended solids (TSS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), and more than 87% for total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN). The main removal process was physical filtration by the substrate due to the high proportion of particulate elements in the sludge. Planted mesocosms were more efficient than those unplanted, confirming the positive role of the plants. Mesocosms planted with Phragmites or Typha showed better performances in TKN removal than those planted with Iris. Only in mesocosms planted with Phragmites was there no outflow in summer due to high evapotranspiration.  相似文献

Over the course of a year, we conducted a study on future restoration work in the Sanyang wetland, a degraded permanent river wetland that is close to the center of Wenzhou city, China. Our main objective was to plan the restoration by using both structural indices and a valuation of the wetland's ecosystem services, thereby linking the science to human welfare. Based on field surveys and research into the history of the study area, we calculated both the potential and current values of the main ecosystem services. The results showed that the potential value at the Sanyang wetland was 55,332 yuan ha−1 yr−1, while the current value was only 5807 yuan ha−1 yr−1. In other words, 89.5% of the service value needs to be restored for the wetland to reach its potential value. We recommend that the service provided by the wetland's ability to purify the environment needs to be the top priority in restoration. In addition, water and sediment quality should also be greatly improved.  相似文献

Constructed wetlands are becoming increasingly popular worldwide for removing contaminants from domestic wastewater. This study investigated the removal efficiency of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from wastewater with the simulated vertical-flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) under three different substrates (i.e., BFAS or blast furnace artificial slag, CBAS or coal burn artificial slag, and MSAS or midsized sand artificial slag), hydraulic loading rates (i.e., 7, 14, and 21 cm d?1), and wetland operational periods (0.5, 1, and 2 years) as well as with and without planting Canna indica L. The wastewater was collected from the campus of South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou, China. Results show that the percent removal of total P (TP) and ammonium N (NH4+-N) by the substrates was BFAS > CBAS > MSAS due to the high contents of Ca and Al in substrate BFAS. In contrast, the percent removal of total N (TN) by the substrates was CBAS > MSAS > BFAS due to the complicated nitrification/denitrification processes. The percent removal of nutrients by all of the substrates was TP > NH4+-N > TN. About 10% more TN was removed from the wastewater after planting Canna indica L. A lower hydraulic loading rate or longer hydraulic retention time (HRT) resulted in a higher removal of TP, NH4+-N, and TN because of more contacts and interactions among nutrients, substrates, and roots under the longer HRT. Removal of NO3?N from the simulated VFCWs is a complex process. A high concentration of NO3?N in the effluent was observed under the high hydraulic loading rate because more NH4+-N and oxygen were available for nitrification and a shorter HRT was unfavorable for denitrification. In general, a longer operational period had a highest removal rate for nutrients in the VFCWs.  相似文献

The flow diverted bed (FDB) system was developed to improve the stream water quality. This system (Run 2) had two wetlands where the flow from the upper layer (aerobic) in the first wetland could be redirected to the lower layer (anaerobic) in the second wetland by the flow diverter, and vice versa. In addition, the yellow-soil media placed at the bottom layer allowed a larger influx in the lower layer and had a sorption capacity of phosphate ions. The removal efficiencies of COD and TN at Run 2 [hydraulic loading rate (HLR) = 177 cm/d] was 1.7–3.6 times higher than that at Run 1 (HLR = 192 cm/d) without the diverter. The values of void fraction, dimensionless variance, dispersion number, Peclet number and velocity for this system were found to be 0.6637, 0.2847, 0.1717, 5.8241, and 53.2 m/d, respectively. The reducing trend of each pollutant was exponentially decreased along the overall length of this system. Also, the transport was dominated by convection (plug flow) rather than dispersion (complete mix). The volumetric removal rate constants for COD, SS, TKN, TN, and TP were found to be 4.854, 7.988, 1.388, 1.625, and 1.767 d−1 via the first-order rate model. Consequently, the flow diverter and yellow-soil media in this system played an important role in enhancing the treatability of pollutants and operating at a higher HLR.  相似文献

The ability of riverine ecosystems to retain nutrients depends on different hydrological, chemical and biological conditions including exchange processes between streams and wetlands. We investigated nutrient retention in a stream wetland complex on the time scale of daily hydrological exchange between both systems. Daily mass balances of NO3-N, NH4-N, TP and SRP were calculated with data obtained by two automated measurement stations in a stream reach upstream and downstream of a wetland. The pattern of hydrological exchange between stream and wetland was used to classify characteristic hydrological periods like floods, base and low flows. The nutrient retention function of the stream wetland complex varied considerably during phases of similar hydrologic conditions. Despite re-wetting measures in the wetland, an overall net export of all nutrients except for NH4-N characterised the whole growing season. Nitrate retention occurred during summer flood (retention in the wetland, 23 kg NO3-N d?1, 17% of the input load) and low flow (retention in the stream, 1 kg NO3-N d?1, 2% of the input load). TP retention during summer could be assigned to sedimentation (0.7 kg TP d?1, 7% during flooding in the wetland, 0.2 kg TP d?1, 4% during low flow in the stream). SRP retention was only intermittent. We concluded that the nutrient retention of streams and wetlands can only be optimised by restoration measures that regard both systems as one functional unit in terms of nutrient retention.  相似文献

Treatment of various types of wastewaters is an urgent problem in densely populated areas of many tropical countries. We studied the potential of using Sesbania sesban, an N2-fixing shrub, in constructed wetland systems for the treatment of high-strength wastewater. A replicated horizontal subsurface flow system and a saturated vertical downflow system was established with planted and unplanted beds to assess the effects of system design and presence of plants on treatment performance. The systems were loaded with a mixture of domestic and pig farm wastewater at three hydraulic loading rates of 80, 160 and 320 mm d?1. The S. sesban plants grew very well in the constructed wetland systems and produced 17.2–20.2 kg dry matter m?2 year?1 with a high nitrogen content. Mass removal rates and removal rate constants increased with loading rate, but at 320 mm d?1 the effluent quality was unacceptable and hydraulic problems appeared. Mass removal rates and removal rate constants were much higher than reported in other studies probably because of the high-strength wastewater, the high loading rates and the tropical conditions. Planted systems removed pollutants much more efficiently than the unplanted controls. Direct plant uptake constituted only up to 8% of the total-N removal and 2% of the P removal at the lowest loading rate, and was quantitatively of low importance compared to other removal processes. The significant effects of plants were therefore related more to their indirect effects on the removal processes. This study for the first time documents that S. sesban can be used in constructed wetland systems for the treatment of polluted water while at the same time producing a valuable N rich biomass that can be used for animal fodder or soil amendment.  相似文献

Methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) are important greenhouse gases, because of their contribution to the global greenhouse effect. The present study assessed emissions of N2O and CH4 from constructed wetland microcosms, planted with Phragmites australis and Zizania latifolia, when treating wastewater under different biological oxygen demand (BOD) concentration conditions. The removal rate was 95% for BOD and more than 80% for COD in all three pollutant concentrations, both plants’ removal rates of pollutants were at almost the same level, and both were found to resist BOD concentrations as high as 200 mg L−1. When BOD concentrations fell below 200 mg L−1, the soil plant units reached an average of 80–92% T-N and T-P removal rates; however, as the concentrations increased to 200 mg mg L−1 or when during the initial phases of winter, the removal rates for T-N and T-P decreased to less than 70%. With NH3-N removal, the influences of BOD concentrations and air temperature were more obvious. When BOD concentrations increased to 100 mg L−1 after October, an obvious decrease in NH3-N removal was detected; almost no nitrification occurred beginning in December at BOD concentrations of 200 mg mg L−1. N2O and CH4 emissions showed obvious seasonal changes; higher emissions were observed with higher BOD concentrations, especially among Z. latifolia units. The enumeration of methane-oxidizing bacteria and methane-producing bacteria was also conducted to investigate their roles in impacting methane emissions and their relationships with plant species. The pollutant purification potentials of P. australis and Z. latifolia plant units during wastewater treatment of different pollutant concentrations occurred at almost the same levels. The nutrient outflow and methane flux were consistently higher with Z. latifolia units and higher concentrations of BOD. The more reductive status and higher biomass of methanogens may be the reason for the lower nitrification and higher CH4 emissions observed with Z. latifolia units and higher concentration systems. The Z. latifolia root system is shallow, and the activity of methanotrophs is primarily confined to the upper portion of the soil. However, the root system of P. australis is deeper and can oxidize methane to a greater depth. This latter structure is more favorable as it is better for reducing methane emissions from P. australis soil plant systems.  相似文献

In order to investigate the effect of temperature, hydraulic residence time (HRT), vegetation type and porous media material and grain size on the performance of horizontal subsurface flow (HSF) constructed wetlands treating wastewater, five pilot-scale units of dimensions 3 m in length and 0.75 m in width were operated continuously from January 2004 until January 2006 in parallel experiments. Three units contained medium gravel obtained from a quarry. The other two contained one fine gravel and one cobbles, both obtained from a river bed. The three units with medium gravel were planted one with common reeds and one with cattails, and one was kept unplanted. The other two units were planted with common reeds. Planting and porous media combinations were appropriate for comparison of the effect of vegetation and media type on the function of the system. Synthetic wastewater was introduced in the units. During the operation period, four HRTs (i.e., 6, 8, 14 and 20 days) were used, while wastewater temperatures varied from about 2.0 to 26.0 °C. The removal performance of the constructed wetland units was very good, since it reached on an average 89, 65 and 60% for BOD, TKN and ortho-phosphate (P-PO43−), respectively. All pollutant removal efficiencies showed dependence on temperature. It seems that the 8-day HRT was adequate for acceptable removal of organic matter, TKN and P-PO43− for temperatures above 15 °C. Furthermore, based on statistical testing, cattails, finer media and media obtained from a river showed higher removal efficiencies of TKN and P-PO43−.  相似文献
