Synopsis In a high salinity estuary at North Inlet, South Carolina, co-occurrence and possible competition among adults of four dominant zooplanktivorous fishes were minimized by seasonal adjustments in lateral and vertical distributions as well as in dietary preferences. In winter, Atlantic silversides, Menidia menidia, occupied the entire water column while other planktivores were rare or absent from the estuary, and they consumed large prey such as mysid shrimps and fish larvae. An immigration of bay anchovies, Anchoa mitchilli, in the spring resulted in a redistribution of species with Atlantic silversides shifting to the surface waters and bay anchovies dominating the lower half of the water column. Both fishes consumed mostly copepods in the spring, but each favored a different species. There was little similarity in the large prey items consumed by the two fishes. Striped anchovies, Anchoa hepsetus, arrived in mid-summer and were most abundant at the surface while bay anchovies continued to dominate the bottom waters. Atlantic silversides were rare in all summer collections. The diets of the two anchovies were similar, but vertical separation during the period of maximum zooplankton abundance probably minimized competition. Rough silversides, Membras martinica, which were obligate surface dwellers, shared the upper water column with striped anchovies, but the two species had very different diets during their period of co-occurrence. Although seasonal changes in fish diets reflected shifts in zooplankton composition and all fishes consumed a variety of prey types, preferences for some prey taxa and total avoidance of others were indicated. Electivity indices indicated an especially strong selection for fiddler crab megalopae by all fishes in the summer and fall. All fishes, except rough silversides, which fed almost exclusively on copepods and crab zoeae, consumed large prey items when they were available. Fine scale partitioning of the food resources was apparent in the selection of different copepod and insect species by the fishes. Spatial and temporal separation in the distribution and/or dietary preferences of the zooplanktivores fishes probably reduces the potential for resource competition. Given the high abundances and selectivity of the planktivores, significant impacts on some zooplankton populations probably result.

Predaceous larvae of the water scavenger beetle Tropisternus setiger (Germar) are common inhabitants of variable environments in which prey availability may vary widely. We conducted laboratory
experiments to assess the effect of prey density on developmental times and survivorship of the preimaginal stages of T. setiger. We also examined the effect of the number of consumed prey on the larval size of instar III. Four different prey densities
(one, two, four, and eight preys a day) were tested and both developmental time and survivorship differed significantly among
them. Larvae fed one or two preys daily showed a longer developmental time and a lower survivorship than larvae fed four or
eight preys a day. Moreover the consumption of four preys a day increased larval developmental success, and to consume one
prey a day affected survivorship through the larval period. On the other hand, prey density had no effect on the final larval
size.

Biology of Moina mongolica (Moinidae,Cladocera) and perspective as live food for marine fish larvae: review
Moina mongolica, 1.0-1.4 mm long and 0.8 mm wide, is an Old World euryhaline species. This paper reviewed the recent advances on its autecology, reproductive biology, feeding ecology and perspective as live food for marine fish larviculture. Salinity tolerance of this species ranges from 0.4–1.4 to 65.2–75.4. Within 2–50 salinity, Moina mongolica can complete its life cycle through parthenogenesis. The optimum temperature is between 25 °C and 28 °C, while it tolerates high temperature between 34.4 °C and 36.0 °C and lower temperature between 3.2 °C and 5.4 °C. The non-toxic level of unionised ammonia (24 h LC50) for M. mongolica is <2.6 mg NH3–N l–1. Juvenile individuals filter 2.37 ml d–1 and feed 9.45×106 algal cells d–1, while mature individuals filter 9.45 ml d–1 and consume 4.94×106 algal cells d–1. At 28 °C, M. mongolica reaches sex maturity in 4 d and gives birth once a day afterward; females carry 7.3 eggs brood–1 and spawn 2.8 times during their lifetime. A variety of food can be used for M. mongolica culture including unicellular algae, yeast and manure, but the best feeding regime is the combination of Nannochloropsis oculata and horse manure. Moina mongolica reproduces parthenogenetically during most lifetime, but resting eggs can be induced at temperature (16 °C) combined with food density at 2000–5000 N. oculata ml–1. The tolerance to low dissolved oxygen (0.14–0.93 mg l–1) and high ammonia makes it suitable for mass production. Biochemical analyses showed that the content of eicospantanoic acid (20:53) in M. mongolica accounts for 12.7% of total fatty acids, which is higher than other live food such as Artemia nauplii and rotifers. This cladoceran has the characteristics of wide salinity adaptation, rapid reproduction and ease of mass culture. The review highlights its potential as live food for marine fish larvae.

The prey selection of larvae of three common littoral fish species (pike, Esox lucius; roach,Rutilus rutilus; and three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus) was studied experimentally in the laboratory by using natural zooplankton assemblages. Zooplankton prey was offered at four
different concentrations to study the functional responses of the planktivores. The diets of pike and sticklebacks were formed
mainly of copepod juveniles and adults, which dominated the prey communities, although sticklebacks ate also cladocerans.
The diet of roach larvae consisted of rotifers, cladocerans and copepods, without prey selection, in equal proportions indicating
a more omnivorous diet. All fish larvae were able to feed selectively although in sticklebacks prey selection was less pronounced.
Pike and roach larvae preferred large prey to smaller prey types. Patterns of prey selection are discussed in the context
of size-selection theory and apparent vs. true selection.

Synopsis Food consumption of perch larvae and the impact of this on zooplankton were examined in two adjacent shallow Scottish lochs. Maximum annual abundance of zooplankton occurred in mid-May at L. Kinord with minimum values in mid-June. Copepods were prominent in spring but were followed by a multi-species community of cladocerans and rotifers in summer. At L. Davan zooplankton biomass remained high through summer with cladocerans dominating andDaphnia longispina the most frequent species. Availability of food items was a principal factor governing feeding behaviour of larvae. Copepodite stages were initially the most common item in the diet in L. Kinord in 1976 and 1977 and rotifers the principal food in June 1977, reflecting the dominance of these items in the zooplankton. Cladocerans were dominant in the plankton community in L. Davan and constituted the greater part of food intake. Overlying this general pattern there was an increase in the size of food items taken by larvae with time and also a definite pattern of food selection for copepods, with initially selection for smaller copepodite stages and later for larger stages and adults. On most occasions larvae selected forCyclops strenuus abyssorum andPolphemus pediculus and selected againstDaphnia longispina. The reduction in the total zooplankton biomass attributed to perch larvae was minimal, with the exception of mid-June at L. Kinord in 1976. However, predation on particular species and copepodite stages was occasionally intense and may have impacted the zooplankton populations.

The origin and development of individual size variation in early pelagic stages of fish
Size variation among individuals born at the same time in a common environment (within cohorts) is a common phenomenon in
natural populations. Still, the mechanisms behind the development of such variation and its consequences for population processes
are far from clear. We experimentally investigated the development of early within-cohort size variation in larval perch (Perca fluviatilis). Specifically we tested the influence of initial variation, resulting from variation in egg strand size, and intraspecific
density for the development of size variation. Variation in egg strand size translated into variation in initial larval size
and time of hatching, which, in turn, had effects on growth and development. Perch from the smallest egg strands performed
on average equally well independent of density, whereas larvae originating from larger egg strands performed less well under
high densities. We related this difference in density dependence to size asymmetries in competitive abilities leading to higher
growth rates of groups consisting of initially small individuals under high resource limitation. In contrast, within a single
group of larvae, smaller individuals grew substantially slower under high densities whereas large individuals performed equally
well independent of density. As a result, size variation among individuals within groups (i.e. originating from the same clutch)
increased under high densities. This result may be explained by social interactions or differential timing of diet shifts
and a depressed resource base for the initially smaller individuals. It is concluded that to fully appreciate the effects
of density-dependent processes on individual size variation and size-dependent growth, consumer feedbacks on resources need
to be considered.

We studied the diet of larval and juvenile Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus in the upper Ariake Bay, Japan. Diet was analyzed by examining the digestive tracts; feeding intensity, proportion of empty
guts, and prey selectivity were calculated. Anchovy density was negatively influenced by temperature and positively by salinity
and prey density. Diet was dominated by Acartia omorii, which was positively selected with two other copepods, Calanus sinicus and Pseudodiaptomus marinus. In contrast, Oithona davisae was highly dominant in the environment but was absent in anchovy guts; thus, this copepod was negatively selected, with two
others, Tortanus derjugini and Sinocalanus sinensis. Overall, larger prey were positively selected and smaller ones were negatively selected; value of electivity index correlated
negatively with prey size. Larvae [<18 mm of standard length (SL)] showed significantly lower feeding intensities and higher
rates of empty guts than juveniles (≥18 mm SL). In juveniles, feeding intensity increased steadily as the fish grew in size,
with a corresponding reduction in empty guts. Feeding intensity correlated positively and empty gut correlated negatively
with fish size. We suggest that larger prey are important diets for postlarval Japanese anchovy in Ariake Bay.

Feeding responses of the oligophagous tobacco hornworm to allelochemicals prevalent in their host plants were determined in food choice-tests using filter paper discs laced with a test solution or water (control). Six solanaceous alkaloids, tomatine, tomatidine, solanine, solanocapsine, atropine and nicotine, were tested and only tomatine and solanocapsine were found to influence preference behavior. Solanocapsine (5 mM) deters feeding whereas tomatine (1 mM) stimulates feeding slightly. No synergistic effect of either tomatine or tomatidine with sucrose was found. The responses to tomatine are affected by previous feeding experience. Tomatine slightly stimulates feeding in larvae reared on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), but slightly deters feeding in larvae reared on Jerusalem cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum). Such induced preference is absent for the other alkaloids tested, which indicates that these alkaloids do not by themselves induce preferences for the plants containing them. The non-alkaloid allelochemicals, chlorogenic acid, rutin, and 2-tridecanone also influenced food choice behavior. Chlorogenic acid is slightly stimulatory at its natural concentration (1mM), but strongly deterrent at higher concentrations. Rutin stimulates feeding in a concentration-dependent manner. Its activity must be due to the glycosylated structure, because both the aglycone (quercetin) and the sugar moiety (rutinose) are neutral. Removal of the glucose part of rutin, as in quercitrin, results in feeding deterrent activity. 2-Tridecanone is neutral at its concentration in cultivated tomato (1 mM), but strongly deterrent and toxic at higher concentrations. Preference behavior is not affected by solanesol, GABA, and a mixture of host plant compounds stimulatory for anothe solanaceous-specific feeder, the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata). We conclude that the prevalent solanaceous alkaloids and other allelochemicals tested do not play important roles in food selection of the tobacco hornworm, although some may make small contributions.

Synopsis Significant changes in growth of bluegills,Lepomis macrochirus, largemouth bass,Micropterus salmoides, and black crappies,Pomoxis nigromaculatus, were observed in Keowee Reservoir, South Carolina, during the 10 years (1968–1977) following impoundment. During this period the reservoir filled, water temperatures were increased by heated effluent from a nuclear power plant, and threadfin shad,Dorosoma petenense, were stocked. Growth was apparently regulated by abundance and size of prey eaten by fish; elevated water temperatures had no measurable effect.

Ten Canthigaster, jactator, tropical marine puffers from Hawaii, were tested individually for 3-day periods in electronic shuttle-boxes (Ichthyotrons) to determine their ability to thermoregulate behaviorally. These fish thermoregulated with a degree of precision comparable to that of temperate freshwater fishes: range 23–31°C, S.D. 1.8–2.4°C, S.E. 0.3–0.5° C. The modal final thermal preferendum was 27°C, comparable to temperate warmwater fishes. The mean preferred temperature did not differ significantly between night (26.5°C) and day (26.9°C); the 24-hr mean was 26.7°C. Apparently at least some tropical marine fishes are capable of thermoregulatory behavior similar to that of temperate freshwater fishes.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were identified and estimated in the gut of three herbivorous fish containing gut endosymbionts, the herring cale Odax cyanomelas (Richardson, 1850) (Family Odacidae), the butterfish O. pullus (Bloch and Schneider, 1801) (Family Odacidae) and the sea carp Crinodus lophodon (Günther, 1859) (Family Aplodactylidae). The highest concentrations of short-chain fatty acids were in the posterior region of the intestine in all species. In O. cyanomelas 85% of the total short-chain fatty acids were found in this region. There was a positive correlation between the distribution of short-chain fatty acids and the microorganisms, suggesting that the short-chain fatty acids were end products of microbial anaerobic metabolism. The major short-chain fatty acid in all three species was acetate, the concentration of which ranged from 20 to 29 mmol·1-1 in the posterior intestine. Lower concentrations of propionate and butyrate were also found. Additionally, valerate was found in the odacids. The ratio of acetate: propionate:butyrate:valerate in the gut section containing the highest concentration of short-chain fatty acids was 83:8:9:1 in O. cyanomelas, 64:21:14:1 in O. pullus and 74:17:9:0 in C. lophodon. Acetate was present in the blood of O. cyanomelas and C. lophodon at concentrations of 1.74±0.17 and 1.79±0.20 mmol·l-1, respectively. The presence of the enzyme necessary to activate acetate, acetyl CoA synthetase, in the major tissues of both O. cyanomelas and C. lophodon indicates that these fishes are able to utilise acetate produced in the gut. The highest activity of acetyl CoA synthetase, 3.55±0.51 and 6.48±3.18 nmol·s-1·g tissue-1 in O. cyanomelas and C. lophodon, respectively, was found in the kidney. Acetyl CoA hydrolase activity was detected in the liver, heart, muscle, gut and kidney of O. cyanomelas and C. lophodon. The highest activity was in the liver of both species, 91.22±9.03 and 57.35±7.15 nmol·s-1·g tissue-1 in O. cyanomelas and C. lophodon, respectively. The presence of acetyl CoA hydrolase in tissues of O. cyanomelas and C. lophodon raises the possibility that some of the acetate in the blood could arise from hydrolysis of endogenously produced acetyl CoA. The results strongly support the hypothesis that short-chain fatty acids produced by endosymbionts in the posterior intestine are used as a blood fuel either for energy purposes or for lipid synthesis by the host fish.Abbreviations DTNB

The trophic spectrum and feeding pattern of two myctophid larvae, Benthosema glaciale and Myctophum punctatum , were analysed in relation to changes in daily light intensity. The larvae of both species live relatively deep, occurring in the first 100 m, though distribution of M. punctatum extends to 150 m depth. The present study, carried out in the western Mediterranean (Alboran Sea), indicated that the larvae of the two species exhibit different foraging strategies. Both started to feed at dawn, but while feeding of M. punctatum was high at dawn and dusk, the feeding of B. glaciale remained high throughout the day. The light intensity profiles taken during the day indicated that at the depths where the species dwelt, light intensity was enough to provoke a feeding response. The larvae of these species, in contrast to the majority of fish larvae, had an enhanced sensitivity due to their pure rod‐like retina, an adaptation for foraging at low light intensities. Both species showed an ontogenetic change in their diet: B. glaciale preflexion larvae fed mainly on copepod eggs and nauplii, while postflexion larvae consumed calanoid copepodites; M. punctatum larvae showed a more diversified diet, composed of larger prey items. The stalked and elongated eye of M. punctatum larvae would enable the detection of a greater range of prey in terms of shape and size. In addition, the retina of this species was characterized by a higher summation ratio and longer photoreceptors, indicating a preference for dimmer environments. This could explain the decreasing feeding activity of M. punctatum during the high light intensity of the middle daylight hours. As a clear relationship existed between feeding pattern and light intensity in these myctophid larvae, the visual characteristics of each species could help to explain the different strategies of foraging behaviour, therefore avoiding a possible overlap in their trophic niche.

Behavioural, developmental and morphological responses of Chironomus gr. thummi larvae (Diptera,Nematocera) to aquatic pollution

Populations of Chironomus gr. thummi larvae from two differently polluted lowland streams (Dommei, high cadmium and zinc; Ijse, medium copper and organic xenobiotics) were screened for behavioural and morphological responses to pollution. Behaviours such as locomotion (swimming and looping), respiration movements (ventilation) and inactivity were quantified with impedance conversion technique. Chironomids from the Dommel were more active than larvae from Ijse. In Ijse, deformed larvae showed less emergence, less locomotion and more ventilation than non-deformed larvae. In Dommel, deformed and normal larvae were equally fit (behaviour, emergence).

Summary In the larvae of the marine teleost, Hexagrammos otakii, the prolactin, ACTH, STH and pars-intermedia cells as well as the neurohypophysis and glomerular body showed no histological change at the time of hatching. These cells or organs do not seem to be specifically involved in the mechanisms of adjustment to the hypertonic osmotic stress at this time. The size of the nuclei of the prolactin cells increased in fresh-water (F. W.) and that of the ACTH cells decreased in 2/3, 1/2 and 1/3 sea-water (S.W.). The amount of chrome-alum haematoxylin-positive material in the neurohypophysis of fish immersed in 1/2 S.W., 1/3 S.W. and F.W. was less than that of the control fish. There was a difference in the glomerular ratio between the fish kept in F. W. and control fish. And the red blood cells in the glomerulus of the larvae kept in 1/2 and 1/3 S.W. apparently increased in number in comparison with the control fish. The author wishes to express his gratitude to Professor Hideshi Kobayashi for his valuable guidance during the course of this study. The author is indebted to Dr. Masaaki Inoue, Kanagawa Prefectural Fisheries Experimental Station, for supplying the eggs of Hexagrammos.

Small-scale recruitment variation in a temperate fish: the roles of macrophytes and food supply
Phillip S. Levin 《Environmental Biology of Fishes》1994,40(3):271-281
Synopsis The availability of reef-related resources, particularly food and shelter can play a significant role in determining the distribution and abundance of reef fishes. Much of the structure on temperate reefs is provided by macroalgae, and variability in the density of temperate reef fishes at large spatial scales (100's of meters) can often be explained by variation in macroalgal cover or density. In this study I investigated the role of macrophytes and associated food resources on the recruitment of a temperate fish, Tautogolabrus adspersus, at a small spatial scale (0.25 m2). No relationship between the density of new recruits and the percent cover of kelp, foliose or filamentous algae was observed. Multiple regressions revealed that less than 8% of variability in recruitment could be explained by variability in macroalgal cover. However, recruits were found in higher abundance in patches containing many functional forms of seaweeds than in patches dominated by a single form. A wide variety of prey were available for use by cunner recruits; however, crustaceans and mussels were the only common components of their diet, and crustaceans were clearly the most preferred prey. The prey composition in patches where fish were present was compared to randomly selected patches. Significantly greater numbers of isopods, amphipods and newly settled mussels were present in patches where fish were present than in randomly selected patches. The data presented in this study contradict previous work that has shown algal structure to be important in determining patterns of abundance and food supply to be of little significance. A conceptual model is proposed suggesting that settling fish select habitats in a hierarchical manner largely based on their dispersal tendencies. Hierarchical selection of habitats results in different attributes of the habitat being selected during different life-history intervals.

Summary In a series of laboratory experiments we examined the hypothesis that larvae of stream mayflies would respond to the presence of two different types of predators in such a way as to minimize their risk of being consumed by each. Positioning of larvae (whether they frequent the top, sides, or bottom of stones) of Baetis tricaudatus and Ephemerella subvaria was altered by the presence of predaceous stoneflies (Agnetina capitata) with a larger proportion of the population occurring on the upper surfaces, where the probability of encountering the predator was lowest. The presence of a benthivorous fish (Cottus bairdi) had no significant effects on positioning of the mayfly larvae. Lack of fish effects may reflect an inability of the mayflies to detect or respond to sculpins, or alternately may indicate that sculpins do not normally present a important predation risk for these mayflies. Failure of mayfly prey to account for fish predators when responding to the presence of stoneflies appcars to explain facilitation previously observed between stoneflies and sculpins.

Effects of prey refuges on a predator-prey model with a class of functional responses: The role of refuges
In this paper, the effects of refuges used by prey on a predator-prey interaction with a class of functional responses are studied by using the analytical approach. The refuges are considered as two types: a constant proportion of prey and a fixed number of prey using refuges. We will evaluate the effects with regard to the local stability of the interior equilibrium point, the values of the equilibrium density and the long-term dynamics of the interacting populations. The results show that the effects of refuges used by prey increase the equilibrium density of prey population while decrease that of predators. It is also proved that the effects of refuges can stabilize the interior equilibrium point of the considered model, and destabilize it under a very restricted set of conditions which is disagreement with previous results in this field.

We tested the hypothesis that larvae of the pipevine swallowtail butterfly, Battus philenor, employ behavioral and phenotypic plasticity as thermoregulatory strategies. These larvae are phenotypically varied across
their range with predominantly black larvae (southeastern USA and California) and red larvae (western Texas, Arizona) occurring
in different regions. Two years of field observations in south Texas indicate that the proportion of red larvae increases
with increasing daily temperatures as the growing season progresses. Larvae were also observed to shift their microhabitats
by climbing on non-host vegetation and avoided excessive heat in their feeding microhabitat. Larvae of ten half-sib families
from populations in south Texas and California, reared under different temperature regimes in common garden experiments, exhibited
plasticity in larval phenotype, with larvae from both populations producing the red phenotype at temperatures greater than
30°C and maintaining the black phenotype at cooler temperatures. However, larvae from Texas were more tolerant of higher temperatures,
showing no decrease in growth rate in the highest temperature (maximum seasonal temperature) treatment, compared to the California
population. In a field experiment, black larvae were found to have higher body temperatures when exposed to sunlight compared
to red larvae. These results suggest that microhabitat shifts and the color polyphenism observed in pipevine swallowtail larvae
may be the adaptive strategies that enable larvae to avoid critical thermal maximum temperatures.

Synopsis In this study the diets of five species of bottom-feeding fishes (Prochilodus lineatus, Steindachnerina insculpta, Loricariichthys platymetopon, Trachydoras paraguayensis and Iheringichthys labrosus) were analyzed. Samples were taken in the High Paraná River basin and its floodplain from August 1987 to July 1988 and in February, August and September 1991. The results demonstrated that P. lineatus and S. insculpta were ileophagous, L. platymetopon was detritivorous and I. labrosus and T. paraguayensis were benthophagous. The feeding activity was higher during the flood period for P. lineatus and in dry season for T. paraguayensis. P. lineatus and S. insculpta fed mainly during the day, while I. labrosus and T. paraguayensis during the day and dusk, respectively.
