In this study, a comparison of point abundance sampling (PAS) electrofishing, angling with two different hook sizes and trap‐based fishing was performed in a non‐wadeable river to analyse their effects on catch per unit effort (CPUE) and population characteristics of invasive round goby Neogobius melanostomus. PAS electrofishing was identified as the most effective (mean ± s.e . CPUE = 57 ± 4 N. melanostomus min?1) and least selective method in terms of size, feeding status and species composition. Angling had the second highest CPUE, but was more size selective and resulted in a higher proportion of males compared to electrofishing [overall sex ratio angling (female:male) = 1:0·92, electrofishing 1:0·65]. Owing to low CPUE (0·012 ± 0·004) and low frequency of occurrence, minnow traps were least suitable for N. melanostomus population assessment. The results of this study suggest that a higher degree of standardization and inter‐calibration is useful to achieve better comparability of population data of invasive N. melanostomus and other benthic fish species.  相似文献

The sampling of fish from the artisanal fleet operating with surface lines off north‐eastern Brazil was carried out between 1998 and 2000. Generalized linear models (GLMs) were used to standardize mean abundance indices using catch and fishing effort data on dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus and to identify abundance trends in time and space, using 1215 surface line deployments. A standard relative abundance index (catch per unit effort, CPUE) was estimated for the most frequent vessels used in the sets, employing factors and coefficients generated in the GLMs. According to the models, C. hippurus catches are affected by the operating characteristics and power of different fishing vessels. These differences highlight the need for standardization of catch and effort data for artisanal fisheries. The highest mean abundance values for C. hippurus were off the state of Rio Grande do Norte, with an increasing tendency in areas with greater depths and more distant from the coast, reaching maximal values in areas whose depths range from 200 to 500 m. The highest mean abundance values occurred between April and June. The higher estimated abundance of C. hippurus in this period off the state of Rio Grande do Norte and within the 200–500 m depth range may be related to a migration pattern of food sources, as its main prey, the flying fish Hirundichthys affinis, uses floating algae as refuge and to deposit its pelagic eggs.  相似文献

Selective exploitation can cause adverse ecological and evolutionary changes in wild populations and also affect sex ratios but few studies have empirically documented skewed sex ratios in exploited fishes (other than species with extreme sexual size dimorphism, SSD). To investigate the possibility of sex‐selective fishing on Alaskan sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka, we assessed sex ratios in fish at two spatial scales: within each of five fishing districts and among 13 breeding populations in one of these districts. We predicted that populations’ sex ratios would vary based on the average size of fish and SSD because size affects vulnerability to fishing. At the larger scale, we found a small but significant bias in fish returning to four of the five fishing districts (average = 52% females), and in four of the five districts males were caught at significantly higher rates than females. At the finer scale there was marked variation in sex ratio on the breeding grounds, ranging from 36% to 47% males. Populations with fish of intermediate sizes experienced the greatest sex ratio biases; the greater vulnerability of males than females to fishing resulted from a combination of larger SSD and different harvest rates between the sexes associated with the fishery size‐selectivity curve shape. Skewed sex ratios may change competition and behavior on the breeding grounds, relaxing selection on male traits associated with mate choice by females or intra‐sexual competition and altering demographic and evolutionary pressures on the fish. Assessment of the size selectivity of fishing gear and the population's SSD can help to illuminate if and how exploitation can affect sex ratios. Future studies examining size‐selective fishing should also evaluate the consequences for sex ratios, as this might help explain changes in harvested population structure and sustainability.  相似文献

The Red Queen hypothesis proposes that coevolving parasites select for outcrossing in the host. Outcrossing relies on males, which often show lower immune investment due to, for example, sexual selection. Here, we demonstrate that such sex differences in immunity interfere with parasite‐mediated selection for outcrossing. Two independent coevolution experiments with Caenorhabditis elegans and its microparasite Bacillus thuringiensis produced decreased yet stable frequencies of outcrossing male hosts. A subsequent systematic analysis verified that male C. elegans suffered from a direct selective disadvantage under parasite pressure (i.e. lower resistance, decreased sexual activity, increased escape behaviour), which can reduce outcrossing and thus male frequencies. At the same time, males offered an indirect selective benefit, because male‐mediated outcrossing increased offspring resistance, thus favouring male persistence in the evolving populations. As sex differences in immunity are widespread, such interference of opposing selective constraints is likely of central importance during host adaptation to a coevolving parasite.  相似文献

Harvesting is often size‐selective, and in species with sexual size dimorphism, it may also be sex‐selective. A powerful approach to investigate potential consequences of size‐ and/or sex‐selective harvesting is to simulate it in a demographic population model. We developed a population‐based integral projection model for a size‐ and sex‐structured species, the commonly exploited pike (Esox lucius). The model allows reproductive success to be proportional to body size and potentially limited by both sexes. We ran all harvest simulations with both lower size limits and slot limits, and to quantify the effects of selective harvesting, we calculated sex ratios and the long‐term population growth rate (λ). In addition, we quantified to what degree purely size‐selective harvesting was sex‐selective, and determined when λ shifted from being female to male limited under size‐ and sex‐selective harvesting. We found that purely size‐selective harvest can be sex‐selective, and that it depends on the harvest limits and the size distributions of the sexes. For the size‐ and sex‐selective harvest simulations, λ increased with harvest intensity up to a threshold as females limited reproduction. Beyond this threshold, males became the limiting sex, and λ decreased as more males were harvested. The peak in λ, and the corresponding sex ratio in harvest, varied with both the selectivity and the intensity of the harvest simulation. Our model represents a useful extension of size‐structured population models as it includes both sexes, relaxes the assumption of female dominance, and accounts for size‐dependent fecundity. The consequences of selective harvesting presented here are especially relevant for size‐ and sex‐structured exploited species, such as commercial fisheries. Thus, our model provides a useful contribution toward the development of more sustainable harvesting regimes.  相似文献

High temperature is a general stress factor that causes a decrease in crop yield. It has been shown that auxin application reduces the male sterility caused by exposure to higher temperatures. However, widespread application of a hormone with vast effects on plant physiology may be discouraged in many cases. Therefore, the generation of new plant varieties that locally enhance auxin in reproductive organs may represent an alternative strategy. We have explored the possibility of increasing indole‐3‐acetic acid (IAA) in ovaries by reducing IAA methyltransferase1 (IAMT1) activity in Arabidopsis thaliana. The iamt1 mutant showed increased auxin signalling in funiculi, which correlated with a higher growth rate of wild‐type pollen in contact with mutant ovaries and premature ovule fertilization. While the production of seeds per fruit was similar in the wild type and the mutant at 20 °C, exposure to 29 °C caused a more severe decrease in fertility in the wild type than in the mutant. Loss of IAMT1 activity was also associated with the production of more nodes after flowering and higher tolerance of the shoot apical meristem to higher temperatures. As a consequence, the productivity of the iamt1 mutant under higher temperatures was more than double of that of the wild type, with almost no apparent trade‐off.  相似文献

An integrated fisheries management tool based on a bio‐economic model was applied to the demersal fishery in the Mar Menor coastal lagoon in SE Spain, with the objective of exploring solutions to ensure the sustainability of this activity. The hypothesis is that excess harvesting in recent years by fishers trying to offset growing production costs has led to the inefficient use of lagoon fishery resources. The authors established the basic bio‐economic conditions of the fishery in 2012 by means of field sampling and personal interviews with producers, and analyzed the response of several biological and economic indicators (target species biomass and yield, fleet profits) to a management scenario based on limiting the fishing season of one of the main types of fishing gear (fish traps, locally known as ‘paranzas’). Results show that a reduction in fishing mortality of two overexploited species (Sparus aurata and Lithognathus mormyrus) will help recover the biomass of these stocks by more than 40% as well as increase the economic value of the fishery, with profits increasing by 17% over a 4‐year period.  相似文献

A high level of androstenone in porcine adipose tissue is a major factor contributing to boar taint. Porcine hydroxy‐delta‐5‐steroid dehydrogenase, 3 beta‐ and steroid delta‐isomerase 1 (3β‐HSD, also known as HSD3B1) plays a key role in the hepatic metabolism that catalyzes androstenone to β‐androstenol. Therefore, 3β‐HSD is a candidate gene for boar taint. This study aimed to investigate functional 3β‐HSD polymorphisms in Duroc pigs. We found eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the full‐length porcine 3β‐HSD. Four of the SNPs had restriction enzyme sites, and we genotyped them in 147 uncastrated male Duroc pigs using a polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Pigs with the GG genotype at the g.165262G>A locus (SNP5) had significantly lower androstenone levels than did those with other genotypes (= 0.030). SNP5 also was associated with differences in 3β‐HSD mRNA levels: pigs with the GG genotype had higher levels than those with other genotypes (= 0.019). The SNP5 polymorphism could affect the hepatic catabolism of androstenone and consequently impact androstenone accumulation in the adipose tissue. Therefore, SNP5 in the 3β‐HSD of Duroc pigs could be a useful selective marker for decreasing boar taint.  相似文献

In the present study the esterification of the OH groups of resveratrol, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, and β‐sitosterol with an antioxidant polyconjugated fatty acid, (2E,4E,6E)‐octa‐2,4,6‐trienoic acid, was achieved. As the selective esterification of OH groups of natural compounds can affect their biological activity, a selective esterification of resveratrol and caffeic acid was performed by an enzymatic approach. The new resulting compounds were characterized spectroscopically (FT‐IR, NMR mono, and bidimensional techniques); when necessary the experimental data were integrated by quantum chemical calculations. The antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory and proliferative activity was evaluated. The good results encourage the use of these molecules as antioxidant and/or anti‐inflammatory agents in dermocosmetic application.  相似文献

The aims of this work were to evaluate the fillet yield and the skin area production of wild‐caught (male × female) and indoor‐reared male Brazilian flounder Paralichthys orbignyanus. Fillet yield of wild‐caught Brazilian flounder is high, averaging 53.4 ± 0.7 and 51.2 ± 0.6% to female and male, respectively. However, indoor‐reared male flounder show even higher (P < 0.05) fillet yields of 59.4 ± 0.1%. Flounder weighing around 500 g should yield a skin area of ca. 450 cm2, representing an important sub‐product that can be used in the fashion industry. The results of the present study emphasize the potential for culture and use of sub‐products of the Brazilian flounder.  相似文献

An exceptional catch of 97 broadnose sevengill sharks Notorynchus cepedianus in Samborombón Bay, Argentina, in 2013 is described from a single overnight gillnet fishing operation. Sixty‐five female and 32 male N. cepedianus, ranging in size between 105–201 and 112–190 cm LT, respectively, were recorded in this catch. Fishers' observations and published information suggest that this species aggregates in the area seasonally for feeding.  相似文献

Accurate identification of invaders, and especially their juveniles and eggs, is a difficult task if several morphologically similar species co‐occur. The aim of the study was to develop and test a rapid and cost‐effective procedure for identification of five species of invasive gobies occurring in the middle Danube basin, namely round goby Neogobius melanostomus, bighead goby Ponticola kessleri, monkey goby Neogobius fluviatilis, racer goby Babka gymnotrachelus and tubenose goby Proterorhinus semilunaris. First, a 708 bp fragment of the cytochrome oxidase I gene was amplified and sequenced for representative samples of these five species. Appropriate sequences of the five species available in public databases were used for in silico analysis. A digestion of the amplified fragment with the BfaI enzyme was found to be suitable for the species identification, as it showed unique restriction patterns for each species. The technique was also successfully applied for fish remains from burbot Lota lota stomachs. Thus the technique could be a useful tool in monitoring biological invasions, especially by identifying specimens that could not be determined on the basis of morphological features. The results demonstrate that the PCR‐RFLP method may in some cases be more reliable for species identification than a standard DNA sequencing.  相似文献

Fourteen polymorphic microsatellites were isolated from Neogobius kessleri, a benthic fish of Ponto‐Caspian origin which has been recently introduced into the Middle and Upper Danube River. Number of alleles and heterozygosity per locus in a sample of 32 fish individuals ranged from two to four and from 0.13 to 0.75, respectively. These primers will be useful in determining the population structure of N. kessleri. In addition, successful cross‐amplification was obtained for four related species, N. melanostomus, N. fluviatilis, N. gymnotrachelus and Proterorhinus marmoratus. These microsatellite loci may be useful for the evaluation of the origin of non‐native goby populations.  相似文献

Distributions, population densities, invasive potentials and adverse impacts of invasive Ponto‐Caspian gobies on native fauna in the Sava River basin remain unknown, whereby 23 locations in the Sava basin were sampled during a three‐year period (2011–2013). Among the five Ponto‐Caspian goby species previously reported in Croatia, only Neogobius fluviatilis (291), Neogobius melanostomus (177) and Ponticola kessleri (21) specimens were collected. Proterorhinus semilunaris and Babka gymnotrachelus were not found. N. fluviatilis was dominant among the invasive gobies at the majority of locations and almost omnipresent (apart from the upper Sava reaches) in the Sava basin. N. melanostomus was found only in the navigable Sava reaches, but its distribution range still seems to be expanding. The status of P. kessleri invasion remains unclear, as it was only found in 2011 at three locations in the lower Sava reaches. No significant (P > 0.05) increase in average catch‐per‐unit‐effort (CPUE) values was observed during the three‐year period. There is some evidence that a decline in Gobio gobio populations might be expected in response to increasing N. fluviatilis population densities. The findings suggest that further range expansions by the Ponto‐Caspian gobies can be expected in Croatia and the implementation of measures to limit their spreading should be considered.  相似文献

The increase in the resistance of pathogens, in particular Staphylococcus aureus, to the action of antibiotics necessitates the search for new readily available and non‐toxic drugs. In solving this problem, phenolic acylhydrazones have high potential. In this communication, the synthesis of quaternary ammonium compounds containing a differently substituted phenolic moiety has been performed. An initial study of antimicrobial activity showed that these compounds are highly selective against S. aureus and B. cereus. The highest activity (MIC 2.0 μm ) was shown by hydrazones containing a catechol fragment. These compounds are more than 3‐fold more active against S. aureus and 3–10‐fold more active against B. cereus than norfloxacin. Low hemolytic and high antioxidant activities of all new compounds were also established.  相似文献

Increasing evidence has demonstrated that the life history traits of fishes have changed in many exploited populations, caused principally by intense fishing mortality and size‐selectivity of the fishing gear. Broad and intensive trawl fishing over an extended period has the enormous potential to change the biological characters of exploited fish populations. An individual‐based model was developed to explore the interactions between trawl fishing and evolutionary changes in length‐at‐age and age structure of an exploited fish population. A perennial fish population was simulated with a multiple age structure in the model to examine the effects of long‐term trawl fishing on hairtail, Trichiurus lepturus, in the East China Sea. The results revealed that distribution of the body length‐at‐age and the age structure of the fish population were irreversibly changed under long‐term trawl fishing. The simulated results confirm that the length‐at‐age is increasing shorter, the younger individuals dominate, the influence of trawl selectivity on the biological traits of the fish population is highly significant, and that these changes have potentially evolutionary consequences on the fish body length‐at‐age.  相似文献

Neonicotinoids, such as imidacloprid, are key insecticides extensively used for control of Nilaparvata lugens. However, imidacloprid resistance has been reported in many Asian countries in recent years. To understand the roles of the chlorine atom of pyridyl group on insecticidal activity and resistance, the atom was removed to generate an imidacloprid analogue DC‐Imi (DesChlorine Imidacloprid). DC‐Imi showed significantly higher toxicity than imidacloprid in the susceptible strain of N. lugens, but had medium level cross‐resistance in an imidacloprid‐resistant strain. In Xenopus oocyte expressed nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) Nlα1/rβ2, the inward currents evoked by DC‐Imi were detected and could be blocked by typical nAChRs antagonist dihydro‐β‐erythroidine (DHβE), which demonstrated that DC‐Imi acted as an agonist on insect nAChRs. The efficacy of DC‐Imi on Nlα1/rβ2 was 1.8‐fold higher than that of imidacloprid. In addition, the influence of an imidacloprid resistance associated mutation (Y151S) on agonist potencies was evaluated. Compared with the wild‐type receptor, the mutation reduced maximal inward current of DC‐Imi to 55.6% and increased half maximal effective concentration (EC50) to 3.53‐fold. Compared with imidacloprid (increasing EC50 to 2.38‐fold of wild‐type receptor), Y151S mutation decreased DC‐Imi potency more significantly. The results indicated that the selective and possibly high toxicities could be achieved through the modification of 6‐chloro‐3‐pyridyl group in imidacloprid and other neonicotinoids.  相似文献

A series of bis‐naphthoquinone derivatives prepared by condensation of aryl aldehydes with lawsone were tested for antiparasitic activities against Toxoplasma gondii and Trypanosoma brucei parasites. Monofluorophenyl derivative 1a , 3,4‐difluorophenyl analog 1c and furyl compound 1l exhibited significant activity against T. gondii cells and appear to be new promising drug candidates against this parasite. The 3,4,5‐trifluorophenyl derivative 1g and the isovanillyl derivative 1j displayed selective activity against Leishmania major amastigotes.  相似文献
