The concept of endemism is useful in quantifying the biological uniqueness of an area, and has been used by many authors as a meaningful alternative to simple species richness. The traditional definition of endemism includes those species with ranges restricted to a particular region, and therefore is useful only in reference to that region. To compare different regions, however, a standardized approach is required, so several authors began using area-based definitions. Accordingly, those species with ranges smaller than a particular area (e.g. 50,000 km 2) are deemed endemic. Nevertheless, several problems are associated with this approach: as the area threshold changes, scaling of endemism also changes, producing a different picture of endemism for each spatial scale. Moreover, the areal definition assumes equal levels of heterogeneity in different landscapes (clearly a simplification), which overemphasizes fine-grained regions. Herein, the importance of distinguishing the regional definition (endemism) from the areal definition (range restriction) is emphasized, and investigators are encouraged to consider multiple spatial scales and geographic dimensions in evaluations of biodiversity.  相似文献

Lakes Baikal, Tanganyika and Malawi have similar origins, are physiographically similar, and of similar size. The hydrological regime of Baikal is, however, very different from that which prevails in its African sisters. Apart from being much cooler, it differs fundamentally in being oxygenated to all depths while the two great African rift lakes possess only a relatively thin oxygenated surface layer and have vast oxygenless, and therefore azoic, abyssal regions. Nevertheless, like Baikal, they have rich endemic faunas. That these faunas originated largely by intralacustrine speciation and not by multiple invasion is now well established. They provide some of the world's most spectacular examples of species flocks, and some groups display what has been aptly described as explosive speciation. Certain features, and especially the adaptive radiation, of some of the groups involved, are noted. Comparisons between lakes are illuminating. Some species flocks, such as those of amphipods, sponges and turbellarians of Baikal and the atyid prawns and potamid crabs of Tanganyika, have no counterparts in the other lakes. Other groups, such as the prosobranch gastropods, ostracods and harpacticoid copepods of Baikal and Tanganyika, and the fishes of all three, involve representatives of the same major group, though often of different families or even higher taxonomic categories. That allopatric speciation has been involved is universally acknowledged but the problems posed by species multiplication in deep water in L. Baikal have led to suggestions that sympatric speciation could have played a part. Notwithstanding the difficulties, it is suggested that the process can be explained without invoking the assistance of the sympatric model. The faunas of these lakes provide immense fields for investigation and enormous intellectual challenges. While each is an entity in itself, comparative studies may be particularly enlightening. The substance of this paper was presented as a lecture at the First International Baikal Vereshchagin Conference held in Listvyanka, Irkutsk Region, U.S.S.R. in October 1989.  相似文献

The unit of adaptation is usually thought to be a gene or set of interacting genes, rather than the whole genome, and this may be true of species differentiation. Defining species on the basis of reproductive isolation (RI), on the other hand, is a concept best applied to the entire genome. The biological species concept (BSC; 84 ) stresses the isolation aspect of speciation on the basis of two fundamental genetic assumptions – the number of loci underlying species differentiation is large and the whole genome behaves as a cohesive, or coadapted genetic unit. Under these tenets, the exchange of any part of the genomes between diverging groups is thought to destroy their integrity. Hence, the maintenance of each species’ genome cohesiveness by isolating mechanisms has become the central concept of species. In contrast, the Darwinian view of speciation is about differential adaptation to different natural or sexual environments. RI is viewed as an important by product of differential adaptation and complete RI across the whole genome need not be considered as the most central criterion of speciation. The emphasis on natural and sexual selection thus makes the Darwinian view compatible with the modern genic concept of evolution. Genetic and molecular analyses of speciation in the last decade have yielded surprisingly strong support for the neo‐Darwinian view of extensive genetic differentiation and epistasis during speciation. However, the extent falls short of what BSC requires in order to achieve whole‐genome ‘cohesiveness’. Empirical observations suggest that the gene is the unit of species differentiation. Significantly, the genetic architecture underlying RI, the patterns of species hybridization and the molecular signature of speciation genes all appear to support the view that RI is one of the manifestations of differential adaptation, as 34 , Chap. 8) suggested. The nature of this adaptation may be as much the result of sexual selection as natural selection. In the light of studies since its early days, BSC may now need a major revision by shifting the emphasis from isolation at the level of whole genome to differential adaptation at the genic level. With this revision, BSC would in fact be close to Darwin’s original concept of speciation.  相似文献

The adjustment of an existing index which combines endemism and species richness (Williams 1993) is proposed so that it requires markedly less data on the study area and its flora or fauna than was necessary with the conventional calculation method. Using this adjusted method, the resulting scores are calculated and mapped for the seed plant flora of the 20 African regions as delineated by White (1983). We argue that this index, here referred to as a measure of endemism richness, can be regarded as the specific contribution of an area to global biodiversity. We demonstrate that at a given sampling scale it shows a linear relation with area. We further demonstrate that, within certain limits, this linearity can also be observed in many cases when sampling scales vary which makes the comparison of differently sized geographic units easier than is the case for species richness. The two most important advantages over species richness are that this index is more suitable to measure both the conservation value of an area and the negative impact of invaders. The latter quality is due to the fact that it yields scores which usually do not rise substantially but can rather be expected to drop in many cases when an area is invaded by alien species.  相似文献

The distribution of tropical plant and animal diversity is still poorly documented, especially at spatial resolutions of practical use for conservation. In the present study, we evaluated the level to which geographical incomplete data availability of species occurrence affects the perception of biodiversity patterns (species richness and endemism) among pteridophytes in Bolivia. We used a data base of Bolivian pteridophytes (27,501 records), divided it into three time periods (1900–70, up to 1990 and up to 2006), and created grid-files at 15'-resolution for species richness and endemism. For each of these biodiversity properties we estimated the species richness (Chao 2) and the index of sampling completeness (C index) per grid, and then all these variables at both species richness and endemism were correlated. Patterns of richness were fairly consistent along all periods; the richest areas were placed along the humid-montane forest, even though they were strongly influenced by collecting intensity. Endemism had a lower degree of correlation with collecting intensity, but varied much more strongly through time than species richness. According to the C index, which gives the ratio between estimated (by Chao 2) and recorded values of species richness and endemism, both biodiversity properties tended to be undersampled in the richest grid cells. Inter-temporal correlations showed sharper differences of correlations for endemism than species richness. Consequently, already in 1970, botanists had a correct idea of the spatial distribution of pteridophyte richness in Bolivia (even though the magnitude was grossly underestimated). In contrast, patterns of endemism, which are of high conservation importance, may not even today be reliably known.  相似文献

Summary We examined the potential effects of geography on the distribution and speciation of skinks on tropical Pacific archipelagos. The entire tropical Pacific skink fauna was divided into continental (found also in continental areas), Pacific (endemic to the study area but found within more than one archipelago) and endemic (found within only one archipelago) species categories. The number and proportion of skinks within each species category were determined for each of the 27 archipelagos in the study area. Nine geographic variables reflecting archipelago size, isolation and elevation were estimated for each archipelago. Principal components analysis was used to reduce the nine variables to three uncorrelated composite variables that were interpreted as representing archipelago size, isolation and elevation. Numbers and proportions of skinks in each category within an archipelago were related to the composite geographic variables using multiple linear regression analysis. Archipelago size and isolation were important predictors of both skink diversity and endemism. Results were then compared to diversity and endemism of birds within the study area. Skinks showed an archipelago-wide level of endemism similar to that of birds. On an archipelago by archipelago basis, however, large differences between birds and skinks were evident. In particular, the New Caledonia skink fauna was much more endemic than that of birds. The bird faunas of Hawaii and the Marquesas were nearly completely endemic, while no endemic skinks occurred in these two archipelagos. These differences presumably reflect the relative dispersal powers of skinks and birds and, consequently, rates of colonization and speciation. Differences may also be due partly to morphological conservatism among isolated skink populations and the occurrence of cryptic species that have not yet been identified as separate species. The discovery of such cryptic species, however, is unlikely to increase the endemic skink fauna of Hawaii and other distant archipelagos to a level commensurate with that of birds. Differences in endemism between skinks and birds may also be due to unknown local ecological interactions.  相似文献

Biodiversity patterns of the woodland-steppe ecotone in southeastern Inner Mongolia were investigated. Controlled by climatic factors, the plant species diversity of the woodland-steppe ecotone is moderate as compared with the adjacent woodland and steppe communities. From woodland through woodland-grassland and woodland-steppe to steppe, about 2/3 species were replaced at each boundary; only seven herb species were detected to be distributed in all four vegetation zones. Landscape classification based on landform, climate, and vegetation shows that landform condition is most critical to landscape diversity in the studied area. The most fragmented landform in the woodland zone does not necessarily lead to low plant species diversity. However, similar understory species in different woodland types lead to continuous woodland vegetation and, hence, high species richness. High fragmentation in the woodland-steppe zone and discontinuous distribution of woodlands might be a driving factor for lower species richness. Reconstruction of the Holocene climatic changes and vegetation development demonstrates that the highest plant species diversity occurred in the ecotone from 4500 to 2500 14C yr BP at different sites, while the woodland zone extended much farther northwestward. When woodlands retreated from the current ecotone with climatic drying, the fragmentation of woodlands in the current ecotone led to plant species loss.  相似文献

Distance analyses were applied to 11 craniofacial measurements recorded in samples from East and Southeast Asia, Australia, Melanesia, Polynesia, and Micronesia for the purpose of assessing the biological affinities and possible origins of these populations. A clear separation between Australomelanesians and other populations from East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific is evident. The craniofacial variations suggest that the generalized Asian populations (Negritos, Dayaks, Lesser Sunda Islands, etc.) represent at least part of the morphological background of not only the majority of present Southeast Asians, but also the Neolithic Jomon people and their lineage in Japan, Polynesians, and western Micronesians. The original craniofacial features of Southeast Asians may have occurred as the result of convergent microevolution due to similar environmental conditions such as tropical rain forest. This supports the local-evolution hypothesis for modern Southeast Asian craniofacial features. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

A new species of the genus Isoperla (Plecoptera, Perlodidae), belonging to the oxylepis species-group is described, and the male mating call is characterized. Its range falls within a small region of the Southern Limestone Alps which is well known to be one endemism-centre of aquatic insects.  相似文献

The biodiversity of floras has until recently been measured solely in terms of their species number or species density, with little regard to the breadth of phylogenetic diversity represented by the species. The latter is partly a function of the size of the flora, and partly of the pattern of distribution of the species into higher taxa. To determine whether floras differ in this respect, this study compares the frequency distribution of genus size in 20 island and regional floras. Certain floras (Cape Region, S.W. Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii) are found to have high concentrations of genera containing many species. Others are notably lacking in large genera (Java, Jamaica, Nepal, Niger), though this group tend to be family-rich. In floras with high endemism (Cape, New Zealand, Fiji, Jamaica, Hawaii), the level of endemism is consistently higher in larger genera. Possible reasons for the observed differences between floras are geographic and temporal isolation, level of habitat diversity, climatic history, volcanic, orogenic and tectonic events. Clusters of large genera may indicate recent speciation, possibly following the last glaciation. Genus size may be an important consideration when limited conservation resources have to be targetted to retain the maximum phylogenetic diversity in a threatened flora.  相似文献

Priority areas for in situ conservation are an unavoidable consequence of competition with other land uses, although they are certainly not to be seen as the only areas of value for conservation. In 1990 an international workshop was convened in Manaus, Brazil, to identify priority areas within Amazonia by committee (Workshop-90). A substantial part of the data for this assessment came from five plant families recorded for the Flora Neotropica. We compare the success of the Workshop-90 method in representing these plant species with the results of using a simple quantitative method for seeking complementary areas. The promises of quantitative methods are twofold. First, they force people to make their values explicit, which is important because priorities are dependent on the values and goals of individuals and are not universal. Second, quantitative methods can achieve representation of more of what is valued. For example, within the 90 top-priority areas (an arbitrary but convenient figure taken from Workshop-90), species representation is shown to be increased when using the complementary areas method by 83%. Simple computer implementations of this method can provide the means for fast inter-active exploration of flexibility in the many alternative area choices. This permits monitoring and review with minimum effort as new data on species and threats are acquired. On the other hand, the problem for all methods is the need for very large numbers of data, whether based on species or on any other surrogates for biodiversity, if well-informed decisions are to be made. This is not a particular problem of quantitative methods, but their explicit nature does highlight the shortcomings of data. For example, patterns in the Flora Neotropica data show effects from small samples even though these data are among the best available for any large tropical wet-forest region. Furthermore, in order to assess the longer-term consequences of area choices, quantitative methods will require many explicit local data on factors affecting viability, threat and cost.  相似文献

Under the ecological theory of adaptive radiation, adaptation and reproductive isolation are thought to evolve as a result of divergent natural selection. Accordingly, elucidating the genetic basis of these processes is essential toward understanding the role of selection in shaping biological diversity. In this respect, the number of genes that evolved by selection remains contentious. To address this issue, the pattern of genetic differentiation obtained using 440 AFLP loci was compared with that expected under neutrality in four sympatric pairs of lake whitefish ecotypes that evolved adaptive phenotypic differences associated with the exploitation of distinct ecological niches. On average, 14 loci showed restricted gene flow relative to neutral expectation, suggesting a role of directional selection on their divergence. Among all loci that are most likely under directional selection, six exhibited parallel patterns of divergence, which provided further support for the role of selection in driving their divergence. Overall, these results indicate that only a small proportion of scored AFLP loci (between 1.4% and 3.2%) might be linked to genes implicated in the adaptive radiation of lake whitefish.  相似文献

The possibilities of the investigation of ontogenetic changes in the morphological features of fish using multidimensional ontogenetic channels, within which individual ontogenetic trajectories run, are demonstrated using African barbs (Barbus intermediuscomplex) as an example. The position of ontogenetic channels allows one to judge how the differences of adult individuals in morphological characters arise during development and how their morphological diversity is formed.  相似文献

Anthropogenic forests, particularly conifer monocultures, today constitute a large proportion of Central European woodland. Conversion of such forest stands into abundantly structured mixed‐species woodland is within the focus of ecosystem restoration and is considered to affect forest biodiversity. Short‐lived tree species play an important role in such conversion processes and may serve as focal species. However, not much is known about their relationship with forest biodiversity. In this study, the short‐lived tree species, European mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia L.), European white birch (Betula pendula Roth), Downy birch (B. pubescens Ehrh.), and Glossy buckthorn (Frangula alnus P. Mill.), commonly occurring throughout Central Europe, are investigated with regard to their relationship with plant diversity. The focus is on their occurrences in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.)–dominated forests in the Northeast German lowlands. A significant increase in vascular plant diversity is revealed in stands with the selected species’ presence, in comparison to stands without them. Increase in plant species numbers is highest where the respective species occurs in the tree and/or shrub layer, compared with their presence only in the herb layer. For bryophyte species, there is a less strong inverse relationship. An analysis of different species groups, such as threatened, woody, and typical forest species of higher plants, reveals no decrease in species numbers in these groups if short‐lived tree species are present. It is concluded that short‐lived tree species can be indicators for plant diversity assessment within forest restoration processes. As to causal explanations, effects of differing site conditions, assessed by use of Ellenberg indicator values, are discussed as well as possible active effects of the tree species changing their environment.  相似文献

Populations of the morphological species, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), were found to breed and feed on the grass, Leersia hexandra Schwartz, at six sites in Queensland, Australia. They differ from sympatric rice-feeding populations in characters of pulse repetition frequencies of male and female acoustic courtship signals. The two host-derived populations hybridize freely in the laboratory, but in mate choice experiments show very significant preferences for homogametic matings. No indication of field hybridization has been found, so that the two morphologically inseparable populations represent sympatric biological species in Australia.
Populations from L. hexandra are also reported from four localities in Sri Lanka and one in Orissa, India. These resemble previously studied populations from the Philippines. They differ significantly in courtship call characters, both from sympatric rice-associated populations and from allopatric Leersia -associated populations from Australia.
The geographical variation reported for acoustic signals is not consistent with Paterson's recognition concept of species, but may be interpreted in terms of theories of allopatric speciation involving sexual selection for mate recognition signals.  相似文献

Comma butterflies (Nymphalidae: Polygonia c-album L.) from one Belgian site and three Spanish sites were crossed with butterflies from a Swedish population in order to investigate inheritance of female host plant choice, egg mass and larval growth rate. We found three different modes of inheritance for the three investigated traits. In line with earlier results from crosses between Swedish and English populations, the results regarding female oviposition preference (choice between Urtica dioica and Salix caprea) showed X-linked inheritance to be of importance for the variation between Sweden and the other sites. Egg mass and growth rate did not show any sex-linked inheritance. Egg mass differences between populations seem to be controlled mainly by additive autosomal genes, as hybrids showed intermediate values. The growth rates of both hybrid types following reciprocal crossings were similar to each other but consistently higher than for the two source populations, suggesting a nonadditive mode of inheritance which is not sex-linked. The different modes of inheritance for host plant preference vs. important life history traits are likely to result in hybrids with unfit combinations of traits. This type of potential reproductive barrier based on multiple ecologically important traits deserves more attention, as it should be a common situation for instance in the early stages of population divergence in host plant usage, facilitating ecological speciation.  相似文献
