Longitudinal changes in larval densities and developmental stage compositions of the freshwater mussel Limnoperna fortunei were investigated to understand the patterns of reproduction and development at three sites in Lake Ohshio, a small reservoir in the temperate region of central Japan. Onset and termination of L. fortunei larval presence were coincident at the three sites in the reservoir. This may have been caused by environmental homogenization owing to artificial aeration for water quality improvement of the reservoir. The observations in this study support temperature as the trigger for onset of reproduction as suggested by previous studies. Occurrence of high turbidity that reduced food availability for mussels was probably the trigger for termination of reproduction in Lake Ohshio. During the period when L. fortunei larvae were present, the D-form larva of the earliest developmental stage was always observed and at much higher density than later developmental stages. The results indicate that spawning of L. fortunei continued in the reservoir throughout the period that larvae were observed and that predation and other factors reduced the proportion of later developmental stage larvae.  相似文献

We investigated the predation and depth effects on abundance and size distribution of an invasive freshwater bivalve, Limnoperna fortunei, post-larvae using screened (5-, 25-, and 50-mm mesh openings) and unscreened cages at three depths (6, 12, and 1 m above the bottom) in a dam reservoir, Lake Ohshio of Japan. The densities of L. fortunei on the unscreened cages were much lower than those of the 5-mm mesh screened cages at any depth. The predation rates estimated by dividing the density of the unscreened cage by that of the 5-mm mesh screened cage were 97.3% at 6 m depth, 96.6% at 12 m depth, and 95.8% at the bottom. Shell lengths of L. fortunei post-larvae were small on bottom cages, and their size distribution was significantly different from those at other depths. These results suggest that predation and depth affected the abundance and size distribution of L. fortunei in the lentic environment. The impact of L. fortunei invasion on the food web and the possibility of regulating their population by predation pressures are also discussed.  相似文献

The Waitaki River system in the South Island of New Zealand includes three large glacially-formed headwater lakes, Tekapo, Pukaki and Ohau, which drain into the manmade Lake Benmore. Phytoplankton periodicity was followed from December 1975 to January 1980 as part of a study investigating possible changes in these lakes as a consequence of hydroelectric development. The phytoplankton was highly dominated by diatoms, e.g., Diatoma elongatum, Cyclotella stelligera, Asterionella formosa, and Synedra acus, but in lakes Ohau and Benmore populations of green algae occasionally developed. In all four lakes seasonal phytoplankton periodicity was observed with maximum biomass in spring and summer. In Lake Tekapo, the first lake in the chain, maximum biomass did not exceed 300 mg m–3, but in the very turbid Lake Pukaki the maximum summer biomass ranged between 300 and 800 mg m–3. In Lake Ohau, the least turbid lake, maximum biomass was around 1 000 mg m–3. In the newly created Lake Benmore periodicity was less evident and summer maxima reached over 1 500 mg m–3. The phytoplankton periodicity in these lakes is greatly influenced by seasonal patterns of turbidity from inflowing glacial silt.  相似文献

In order to predict the distribution of chlorophyll a synoptically in Lake Taihu from 2006 to 2008, a common empirical algorithm was developed to relate time series chlorophyll a concentrations in the lake to reflectance derived as a function of band 2 MODIS data (r 2 = 0.907, n = 145) using time series from 2005. The empirical model was further validated with chlorophyll a data from a 2008 to 2009 dataset, with RMSE < 7.48 μg l−1 and r 2 = 0.978. The seasonal and inter-annual variability of the surface chlorophyll a concentration from 2006 to 2008 was then examined using Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis. The results revealed that the first four modes were significant, explaining 54.0% of the total chlorophyll a variance, and indicated that during the summer, algal blooms always occur in the northern bays, Meiliang Bay and Gonghu Bay, while they occur along the southwestern lakeshore during early summer, fall, and even early winter. The inter-annual variance analysis showed that the duration of algal blooms was from April to December of 2007, which was different from the bloom periods in 2006 and 2008. The results of EOF analysis show its potential for long-term integrated lake monitoring, not only in Lake Taihu but also in other large lakes threatened by accelerating eutrophication.  相似文献

Old Fort Lake, a small (1.6 ha), shallow, and recreational water body in Delhi (India) was studied through monthly surveys in two consecutive years (January, 2000–December, 2001). Precipitation is the major source of water for this closed basin lake. In addition, ground water is used for replenishing the lake regularly. This alkaline, hyposaline hard water lake contains very high ionic concentration, especially of nitrates. Based on overall ionic composition, this lake can be categorized as chloride–sulfate alkaline waters with the anion sequence dominated by SO4 2− > Cl > HCO3 , and the cations by Mg++ > Ca++. The overall seasonal variability in physicochemical profile was largely regulated by the annual cycle of evaporation and precipitation, whereas the ground water largely influences its water quality. The lake exhibited phytoplankton-dominated turbid state due to dominance of the blue green alga, Microcystis aeruginosa. The persistent cyanobacterial blooms and the elevated nutrient levels are indicative of the cultural eutrophication of the lake. This study focuses on the relative importance of eutrophic vis-à-vis hyposaline conditions in determining the structure and seasonal dynamics of zooplankton species assemblages. A total of 52 zooplankton species were recorded and rotifers dominated the community structure qualitatively as well as quantitatively. The genus Brachionus comprised a significant component of zooplankton community with B. plicatilis as the most dominant species. The other common taxa were B. quadridentatus, B. angularis, Lecane grandis, L. thalera, L. punctata, Mesocyclops sp., and Alona rectangula. Multivariate data analysis techniques, Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) along with Monte Carlo Permutation Tests were used to determine the minimum number of environmental factors that could explain statistically significant (P < 0.05) proportions of variation in the species data. The significant variables selected by CCA were NH3–N followed by percent saturation of DO, COD, SS, BOD, NO2–N, rainfall, silicates, and PO4–P. The results indicate that the seasonal succession patterns of the zooplankton species were largely controlled by physicochemical factors related directly or indirectly to the process of eutrophication, whereas hyposaline conditions in the lake determined the characteristic species composition. Weekly observations ofNeomysis intermedia in Lake Kasumigaura showed two major peaks in abundance during spring and autumn (more than 104 individuals m–2) and minimum levels in summer and winter (less than 103 individuals m–2). Their increase in abundance followed a high egg ratio, suggesting that the increase in abundance was caused by a high reproductive rate. Major contributors to mysid population decreases include fish predation and commercial fisheries, and possible horizontal migration of the mysids. N. intermedia showed two types of life history in the lake. One type (overwintering generation) has a life span of about 6–7 months and produces about 27 eggs per brood. Another, appearing from spring to autumn, matures in 3–6 weeks at a smaller size, and produces 12 eggs per brood. The reproductive season ofN. intermedia was continuous from March through November.  相似文献

The spatial distribution and morphological diversity of virioplankton were determined in Lake Donghu which contains three trophic regions: hypertrophic, eutrophic and mesotrophic region. Virioplankton abundance measured by transmission electron microscope (TEM) ranged from 7.7 × 108 to 3.0 × 109 ml–1, being among the highest observed in any natural aquatic system examined so far. The spatial distribution of virioplankton was correlated significantly with chlorophyll a concentration (r = 0.847; P < 0.01) at the sampling sites in Lake Donghu. 76 morphotypes were observed. Most morphotypes have tails, belonging to Siphoviridae, Myoviridae and Podoviridae. The majority of tailed phages in the lake were Myoviridae. Morphotypes which were rarely reported, such as prolate-headed virus-like particles, lemon-shaped virus-like particle, and viruses resembling Tectiviridae and Corticoviridae were all observed in the lake. It is concluded that the high viral abundance might be associated with high density of phytoplankton including algae and cyanobacteria. There was high viral diversity in this eutrophic shallow lake. In addition, cyanophage represented an important fraction of the virioplankton community in Lake Donghu.  相似文献

Investigation was made of the primary productivity of Lake Yunoko. The concentrations of PO4-P and NH3-N were highest in summer. The total amount of chlorophylla in the entire water column varied from 45 mg/m2 to 405 mg/m2 during the year with the maximum values occurring in late spring and in December. These values are very high compared with those reported for other lakes in the same district. The standing crop of phytoplankton as organic carbon was approximately 50∼70% of the total particulate organic carbon in the lake with values as high as 80∼90% being obtained in the spring and autumn. The rate of phytosynthesis under saturated light conditions was 3.7 mg C/mg chla/hr in the case of phytoplankton of the sun type and 1.2∼1.6 mg C/mg chla/hr in those of the shade type. The daily gross primary production in the lake varied from a low of 134 mg C/m2 to a high of 1,003 mg C/m2 during the year, the mean value being 372 mg C/m2. The total amount of daily microbial respiration varied from 177 mg C/m2 in winter to 1,476 mg C/m2 in summer. Thus, the daily balance of production and consumption of organic matter in the lake itself was concluded to be negative. The main factor contributing to the rectification of this imbalance of material budget seems to be the leaf litter coming from the forest surrounding the lake. In conclusion, Lake Yunoko is a very productive and at the same time, fairly heterotrophic lake. Special Project Research supported by the Ministry of Education on Dynamic State of Biosphere. Limnoperna fortunei (Bivalvia, Mitylidae) was introduced into South America in 1991 in the La Plata River (Argentina). It arrived in the ballast water of ships coming from Asia, where this species is native. It was first observed in 1998 in the Paraguay River. Limnoperna was introduced into the Pantanal region as hull fouling of vessels using the Paraguay–Parana waterway. This study describes how L. fortunei came to the Pantanal region, and provides details of its occurrence, density, and impacts. From 1999 to 2002, observations and sampling on natural and artificial substrates in the Paraguay River were made. Some aspects of the spread and impacts, based on local community information, were also analyzed. On artificial substrate the density reached 523.8 individuals m−2 and on natural substrate (rocks), up to 10,000 individuals m−2 were found. The densities observed were quite low compared to those found in Southern Brazil, where values up to 100,000 individuals m−2 have been recorded in the last 3 years. In the Paraguay River, the population density of L. fortunei can be negatively impacted by periodic low levels of dissolved oxygen and decreases in pH to between 5 and 6. Such conditions are frequently present during the periodic flooding or inundation of this area. Under these conditions, a high mortality of L. fortunei was recorded in March of 2002, on both natural and artificial substrates. Despite low densities, L. fortunei can colonize water cooling systems of boats, obstructing water circulation and causing motor overheating. Accumulation in water supply equipment, such as pumps and pipes has also been observed. An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

Summary During unusually wet years the salinity of the Great Salt Lake (Utah) decreased from above 100 g/L to 50 g/L. This allowed the predaceous insect Trichocorixa verticalis to invade the pelagic region of the lake and reach a mean summer density of 52/m3. Concurrent changes in the pelagic ecosystem were: a decrease in the dry biomass of the previously dominant filter-feeding brine shrimp Artemia franciscana from 720 to 2 mg/m3, the invasion of three other zooplankton taxa, a 10 × decrease in community filtration rate, a 20 × increase in chlorophyll a concentration, a 4 × decrease in water clarity and perhaps a decrease in soluble nutrients. Trichocorixa abundance was also inversely correlated with the abundance of Artemia along a salinity gradient in the lake's estuary. In a 9-d microcosm experiment Trichocorixa preyed on nauplii and decreased the total density of Artemia from 103 to 6/L. The reduction in Artemia allowed protozoans to increase 10–100 ×. Changes in chlorophyll and clarity were consistent with those observed in the lake. These results suggest that invertebrate predation may be an important factor structuring simple food webs such as those found in moderately saline lakes.  相似文献

Studies were undertaken with the aim of developing a standardized method for assessing environmental pollution in sediments by utilization of life-history data of freshwater tubificids. Similar bioassay methods have long been used for Daphnia magna, species of Ceriodaphnia and Nitocra, etc. in accordance with guidelines from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Tubifex tubifex was found to be the most likely candidate for such bioassays, since the species is readily kept in culture and reproduces more or less consistantly. The culturing method is slightly modified from Kosiorek (1974). This paper provides an example of the particular sensitivity of this kind of bioassay method in the detection of heavy metal contamination of lake sediments. Sediments from the oligotrophic Lake Runn were considered suitable for the purpose, since the lake receives waste water from a major mining industry in Sweden. Metal analyses of the sediments had revealed the agents likely to be causing the decreased biological activity measured in the lake; rough amplitudes for mercury: 800–3600 ng · g-1 dw, copper: 800–1800 g · g-1 dw, zinc: 3.3 – 8.1 mg · g g-1 dw have been estimated for surficial sediments.Young tubificids exposed to Lake Runn sediments did not grow much and died off within a short period of time. No reproduction occurred. Sediments from Lake Runn, when mixed with sediments from the eutrophic Lake Hjälmaren, made reproduction of T. tubifex occur only in mixtures containing less than 50% L. Runn sediments. The growth rate, reproductive success and the very timing of consecutive reproductive events of cohort individuals were found to be highly indicative of toxic effects. When additional food sources were available, however, these effects were largely masked. Therefore, extra food rations were excluded from the original method.  相似文献

Walker Lake (area = 140 km2, Z mean = 19.3 m) is a large, terminal lake in western Nevada. As a result of anthropogenic desiccation, the lake has decreased in volume by 75% since the 1880s. The hypolimnion of the lake, now too small to meet the oxygen demand exerted by decaying matter, rapidly goes anoxic after thermal stratification. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to examine the feasibility of using oxygenation to avoid hypolimnetic anoxia and subsequent accumulation of ammonia in the hypolimnion, and to estimate the required DO capacity of an oxygenation system for the lake. The accumulation of inorganic nitrogen in water overlaying sediment was measured in laboratory chambers under various DO levels. Rates of ammonia accumulation ranged from 16.8 to 23.5 mg-N m–2 d–1 in chambers with 0, 2.5 and 4.8 mg L–1 DO, and ammonia release was not significantly different between treatments. Beggiatoa sp. on the sediment surface of the moderately aerated chambers (2.5 and 4.8 mg L–1 DO) indicated that oxygen penetration into sediment was minimal. In contrast, ammonia accumulation was reversed in chambers with 10 mg L–1 DO, where oxygen penetration into sediment stimulated nitrification and denitrification. Ammonia accumulation in anoxic chambers (18.1 and 20.6 mg-N m–2 d–1) was similar to ammonia accumulation in the hypolimnion from July through September of 1998 (16.5 mg-N m–2 d–1). Areal hypolimnetic oxygen demand averaged 1.2 g O2 m–2 d–1 for 1994–1996 and 1998. Sediment oxygen demand (SOD) determined in experimental chambers averaged approximately 0.14 g O2 m–2 d–1. Continuous water currents at the sediment-water interface of 5–6 cm s–1 resulted in a substantial increase in SOD (0.38 g O2 m–2 d–1). The recommended oxygen delivery capacity of an oxygenation system, taking into account increased SOD due to mixing in the hypolimnion after system start-up, is 215 Mg d–1. Experimental results suggest that the system should maintain high levels of DO at the sediment-water interface (10 mg L–1) to insure adequate oxygen penetration into the sediments, and a subsequent inhibition of ammonia accumulation in the hypolimnion of the lake.  相似文献

Nitrate removal rates and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels were evaluated in small batch-mode wetland mesocosms with two different plant species, cattail (Typha spp.) and bulrush (Scirpus spp.), and associated mineral-dominated sediment collected from a mature treatment wetland. Nitrate loss in both cattail and bulrush mesocosms was first-order in nature. First-order volumetric rate constants (kV) were 0.30 d−1 for cattail and 0.21 d−1 for bulrush and rates of nitrate loss were significantly different between plant treatments (p < 0.005). On an areal basis, maximum rates of nitrate removal were around 500 mg N/(m2 d) early in the experiment when nitrate levels were high (> 15 mg N/L). Areal removal rates were on average 25% higher in cattail versus bulrush mesocosms. DO in mesocosm water was significantly higher in bulrush versus cattail (p < 0.001). DO in bulrush generally ranged between 0.5 and 2 mg/L, while DO in cattail mesocosms was consistently below 0.3 mg/L. Based on cumulative frequency analysis, DO exceeded 1 mg/L around 50% of the time in bulrush, but only 2% of the time in cattail. DO in bulrush exhibited a statistically significant diel cycle with DO peaks in the late afternoon and DO minimums in the early morning hours. Difference in nitrate removal rates between wetland plant treatments may have been due to differing plant carbon quality. Cattail litter, which has been shown in other studies to exhibit superior biodegradability, may have enhanced biological denitrification by fueling heterotrophic microbial activity, which in turn may have depressed DO levels, a prerequisite for denitrification. Our results show that the cattail is more effective than bulrush for treating nitrate-dominant wastewaters.  相似文献

The relationships of the halocline to both water quality and phytoplankton composition in Lake Obuchi, a shallow brackish lake in northern Japan, were investigated from April 2001 to December 2004. The halocline in this lake became stronger in summer (July–September, mean maximum density gradient 4.3–5.8 ρtm−1) but weaker in spring, fall, and winter (1.9–3.3 ρtm−1). Although the difference in water quality between the upper and lower layers separated by the halocline was high in summer, nutrients (PO43−-P and NH4+-N) were eluted from the bottom sediment as levels of dissolved oxygen decreased in the bottom layer because of the strong stratification caused by the halocline formed over the long term. Moreover, phytoplankton taxa composition also differed between the upper and lower layers in summer, but was similar in other seasons. The dominant phytoplankton taxa in the upper layer in summer were Skeletonema costatum and Cyclotella spp., whereas in the lower layer, Gymnodinium spp. (Dinophyceae) and Chlorophyceae, which prefer eutrophic and low dissolved oxygen conditions, dominated. This suggests that the halocline was related to differentiations in both water quality and ecosystem components between the upper and lower layers in the brackish lake water.  相似文献

About 650 zooplankton samples were collected from Lake Inarijärvi in 1977–1979 from the littoral and pelagial zones of the lake. One hundred and twenty-three zooplankton taxa were found and most of them can be considered euplanktonic. The most important species were Holopedium gibberum, Daphnia cristata, Cyclops spp. and Eudiaptomus spp. Mean pelagial zooplankton biomass was 0.29 g m–3 in the 0–5 m depth zone, 0.17 g m–3 in 5–10 m and 0.11 g m–3 in 10–20 m.The zooplankton biomass at a sandy shore was about 0.09 g m–3, at a stony shore 0.05 g m–3 and at a vegetated shore 0.76 g m–3. About 70% of the whole zooplankton production consisted of crustaceans. The sum of herbivore and carnivore zooplankton production in the pelagial area during the summer was 210–330 kg ha–1 × 3 months.  相似文献

Distribution and abundance of phyto-, zooplankton and benthic organisms in Lake Qarun were investigated during the period from January 1974 to December 1977.Average number of phytoplankton cells was 152,300 cells/L and its biomass was 0.365 g/C/m3; average number of zooplankton was 31.44 × 103/m3 and its biomass was 194.19 mg/m3. The average number of benthic fauna was 19889/m2 and its biomass was 400.22 g/m2 (dry wt.). Therefore, Lake Qarun may be considered as a highly eutrophic body of water.Freshwater planktonic species, that used to inhabit the lake, such as Diaptomus salinus and the cladoceran Moina salinarum, disappeared completely when the salinity of the lake water reached 30–34 However, some Rotatoria were able to withstand the high salinity. The new composition of the zooplankton community shows that the marine zooplankton species include not only Acartia latisetosa and Cirripedia nauplii, but also other species such as Polychaeta, Obelia medusae, etc.The benthos of Lake Qarun is characterised by an intensive growth of few species. The major part (i.e. 93.54% by weight) of bottom fauna in the lake is Mollusca, mainly Cerastoderma glaucum (69·84% by weight).  相似文献

Lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) have experienced significant declines throughout the Great Lakes, leading to stocking efforts at some locations to reestablish extirpated populations. Given the late sexual maturity of the species, assessment of stocking program success is often delayed. Lake sturgeon were extirpated from the St. Louis River in western Lake Superior. Stocking began in 1983 and continued until 1994, using the Wolf River (Lake Winnebago) in the Lake Michigan basin as the source. Stocking resumed from 1998 to 2000, using the Sturgeon River in Lake Superior as the source. Our objectives were to (a) determine the movement patterns of stocked Wolf River sturgeon, (b) determine whether stocked individuals are migrating into natural spawning populations during the spawning season, (c) identify the origins of individuals captured in the St. Louis River, and (d) assess the genetic diversity of the reintroduced St. Louis River population. All collected samples were analyzed using 12 microsatellite loci, followed by genetic assignment testing to achieve the first three objectives. Genetic diversity was compared to natural spawning populations in Lake Superior. The highest proportion of stocked Wolf River lake sturgeon was detected in western Lake Superior, close to the stocking site. However, individuals were detected throughout Lake Superior. Wolf River individuals were detected in most of the spawning populations in Lake Superior, with the greatest number in the Sturgeon River and the Goulais River. The majority of individuals captured in the St. Louis River were of stocked origin (88.1%), with 73.5% from the Wolf River and 14.6% from the Sturgeon River. These observed proportions differed from the expected proportions based on the number of sturgeon released from each source (χ2 = 55.37, p < 0.00001), with a higher representation of Sturgeon River individuals. Evidence of natural recolonization in the St. Louis River was detected from Lake Huron and Goulais River individuals. Genetic diversity of the St. Louis River population was comparable to levels observed in the remnant natural populations in Lake Superior. However, the effective population size of the St. Louis River was small (Ne = 38.1) and average relatedness among individuals was relatively high (r = 0.151). Monitoring of movement of stocked Wolf River sturgeon throughout Lake Superior should continue, with careful attention to the potential for outbreeding depression in remnant populations. Genetic diversity of the St. Louis River population should also continue to be monitored to see if it improves with increased natural reproduction.  相似文献

The morphological and biological features of Bythotrephes—a relatively rare crustacean in Lake Pleshcheevo—have been identified on the basis of vast material (several hundreds of individuals) collected in August 2010. The individuals were distinguished by a minimal body size, short caudal appendix, absence of a loop, and very small caudal claws and were identified as Bythotrephes brevimanus Lilljeborg, 1901. The morphology of the crustacean corresponds to the high water mineralization in the lake and the relative stability of the environment. Some peculiarities of molt and growth of the crustacean were distinguished. A chitinous integument of the caudal appendix formed during embryogenesis has a different structure than chitin formed during further molts. In August, the population of B. brevimanus in different areas of the lake was stable and consisted only of juveniles and parthenogenetic females (80%) (4–6 eggs). The largest number of crustaceans (150 ind./m3) was recorded in the periphery of the depression above depths of 6–7 m; 80 ind./m3 were recorded above depths of 11–12 m; and, above the depression, there were less than 30 ind./m3. The small density of crustaceans in the pelagial depends on the intensive grazing of this food object selected by fish in especially transparent water (color 15–20 and transparency 300–600 cm).  相似文献

As a result of high nutrient loading Lake Veluwe suffered from an almost permanent bloom of the blue-green algaOscillatoria agardhii Gomont. In 1979, the phosphorus loading of the lake was reduced from approx. 3 to 1 g P.m–2.a–1. Moreover, since then the lake has been flushed during winter periods with water low in phosphorus. This measure aimed primarily at interrupting the continuous algal bloom. The results of these measures show a sharp decline of total-phosphorus values from 0.40–0.60 mg P.l–1 (before 1980) to 0.10–0.20 mg P.l–1 (after 1980). Summer values for chlorophylla dropped from 200–400 mg.m–3 to 50–150 mg.m–3.The increase in transparency of the lake water was relatively small, from summer values of 15–25 cm before the implementation of the measures to 25–45 cm afterwards. The disappointing transparency values may be explained by the decreasing chlorophylla and phosphorus content of the algae per unit biovolume. Blue-green algae are gradually loosing ground. In the summer of 1985 green algae and diatoms dominated the phytoplankton for the first time since almost 20 years. To achieve the ultimate water quality objectives (transparency values of more than 100 cm in summer), the phosphorus loading has to be reduced further.  相似文献
