Lizards in the genus Anolis have experienced adaptive radiation in the Greater Antilles, producing a suite of species morphologically adapted to use different parts of the environment. In the Lesser Antilles, adaptive radiation has not occurred, but on some islands, interpopulational variation is high and represents adaptation to different habitats. We compared the extent of morphological differentiation among Greater Antillean habitat specialists with that exhibited among populations of two species, Anolis marmoratus and A. oculatus, from the Lesser Antillean islands of Guadeloupe and Dominica. Although extensive, intraspecific divergence in the Lesser Antilles is substantially less in magnitude than the differences among habitat specialists in the Greater Antilles. All populations of A. marmoratus are most similar to Greater Antillean trunk‐crown habitat specialists, but populations of A. oculatus differ in their affinities: some are similar to trunk‐crown anoles, but others are more similar to trunk‐ground habitat specialists.  相似文献

In the course of a phylogenetic analysis and systematic revision ofCharianthus, it was discovered thatC. purpureus, as traditionally circumscribed, is polyphyletic, consisting of three morphologically diagnosable entities. Thus two new species,Charianthus dominicensis andC. grenadensis, are described and illustrated. Each is endemic to the Lesser Antillean island for which it is named—Dominica and Grenada, respectively.Charianthus, the only vascular plant genus endemic to the Lesser Antilles, comprises six species of nectariferous, hummingbird-pollinated shrubs and small trees.  相似文献

Agaves have long been utilized for their leaf fiber and for beverage production. As first reported in 1968 for Agave americana, they are Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) plants, for which stomatal opening and CO2 uptake occur primarily at night when the lower temperatures greatly reduce water loss. More recently, the influences of rainfall, temperature, and photosynthetically active radiation on CO2 uptake by agaves have been determined and incorporated into an Environmental Productivity Index (EPI). Nutrient effects on CO2 uptake and growth can be quantified by a Nutrient Index, which multiplies EPI to account for soil element effects. New growth data forAgave victoriae-reginae are consistent with the Nutrient Index, except that high soil potassium levels inhibited dry weight increases and sodium was somewhat more inhibitory than expected. Productivities of agaves are high, the 25 tons dry weight hectare-1 yr-1 achievable byAgave mapisaga, A. salmiana, and A. tequilana exceeding the productivity of most annual agricultural crops. Often interest is focused on a specific harvestable plant part, such as the stems ofA. tequilana, which are harvested for tequila production. These stems have threefold higher levels of nonstructural carbohydrates such as sugars and polysaccharides than do the leaves; levels of such carbohydrates tend to be higher at times of the year with higher EPI, new data that can affect traditional harvesting practices. In conclusion, because of CAM, agaves can have high productivities in regions of moderate annual rainfall, and because of EPI, such productivity can be predicted, which augurs well for the increased future cultivation of agaves.  相似文献

The plant microbiota can affect host fitness via the emission of microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that influence growth and development. However, evidence of these molecules and their effects in plants from arid ecosystems is limited. We screened the mVOCs produced by 40 core and representative members of the microbiome of agaves and cacti in their interaction with Arabidopsis thaliana and Nicotiana benthamiana. We used SPME‐GC‐MS to characterize the chemical diversity of mVOCs and tested the effects of selected compounds on growth and development of model and host plants. Our study revealed that approximately 90% of the bacterial strains promoted plant growth both in Athaliana and Nbenthamiana. Bacterial VOCs were mainly composed of esters, alcohols, and S‐containing compounds with 25% of them not previously characterized. Remarkably, ethyl isovalerate, isoamyl acetate, 3‐methyl‐1‐butanol, benzyl alcohol, 2‐phenylethyl alcohol, and 3‐(methylthio)‐1‐propanol, and some of their mixtures, displayed beneficial effects in Athaliana and also improved growth and development of Agave tequilana and Agave salmiana in just 60 days. Volatiles produced by bacteria isolated from agaves and cacti are promising molecules for the sustainable production of crops in arid and semi‐arid regions.  相似文献

Archaeological Evidence of the Cultural Importance of Agave spp . in Pre-Hispanic Colima, Mexico. Production of agave-based food and fermented alcoholic beverages was highly relevant culturally and socially in pre-European contact western Mesoamerica. It has been hypothesized that agave distillation in western Mexico began in Colima in the early Colonial Era through adaptation of introduced Filipino techniques. Archaeological evidence is presented confirming the cultural and social significance of agave in Colima before contact, one of the fundamental conditions supporting this hypothesis. An analysis of circular subterranean stone structures in residential and ceremonial contexts (Classic and Postclassic periods: 200–1500 common era [CE]), and a comparison with stone ovens currently used to cook agave for the creation of spirits, indicate these structures were probably used for preparing food, including agave. Analysis of funerary ceramic vessel offerings with agave images (Colima phase: 400–600 CE) are reported for the first time. Their characteristics, and those of the associated burials and tombs, suggest those buried were agave growers or alcoholic beverage producers who fulfilled relevant roles in the society. Most of the agave images probably represent Agave angustifolia Lem and its cultivation. During the Colonial Era, the cultural and social relevance of agaves almost disappeared in Colima, possibly due to drastic reductions in the native human population, changing land use practices, and prohibitions against the production and sale of native alcoholic beverages.  相似文献

Three species ofBactris are recognized in the Greater Antilles:B. cubensis (from Cuba),B. plumeriana (from Hispaniola), andB. jamaicana (from Jamaica). A cladistic analysis of the non-ocreate clade—i.e.,Bactris cubensis, B. plumeriana, B. jamaicana, B. macana, andB. gasipaes—confirmed that the Greater Antillean species ofBactris form a monophyletic group, i.e., the Antillean clade. Synapomorphies supporting the Antillean clade are mesocarp and endocarp fibers numerous, parallel, predominantly narrow, few broad, extending the entire length of the endocarp; and leaf segments 45–80 per side of rachis. The presence of fiber-sclereids in the leaf lamina, and petals of the staminate flowers ovate to ovatetrullate, with sparsely branched fibers, may represent additional synapomorphies.Bactris plumeriana andB. jamaicana are hypothesized to be sister species, a grouping weakly supported by their short anthers. Each species has at least one autapomorphy; therefore, all are considered to be a cladospecies. Noteworthy interpopulational variation occurs withinBactris plumeriana andB. cubensis.  相似文献

The frog Leptodactylus validus occurs in northern South America, Trinidad and Tobago, and the southern Lesser Antilles (Grenada and St. Vincent). Mitochondrial DNA sequences were used to perform a nested clade phylogeographic analysis (NCPA), to date colonization events, and to analyze colonization patterns using on a relaxed molecular clock and coalescent simulations. L. validus originated on the mainland and first colonized Trinidad with subsequent independent colonizations of Tobago and the Lesser Antilles from Trinidad. The NCPA suggests a historical vicariant event between populations in Trinidad and Tobago from those in the Lesser Antilles. The colonization of Trinidad occurred 1 million years ago (mya) and the colonization of the Lesser Antillean islands occurred 0.4 mya. The coalescent approach supported the scenario where L. validus dispersed from Trinidad to St. Vincent and from there to Grenada, a dispersal event that could have been mediated by human introduction as recent as 1600 years ago.  相似文献

Recent fieldwork in central Arizona resulted in the discovery of two agaves that display low seed set, reproduce mainly by vegetative means, have restricted distributions, and cannot be readily assigned to any existing species. These agaves are closely associated with archaeological structures and features and can be found growing with other previously described pre-Columbian Agave domesticates. Herein we describe Agave verdensis and A. yavapaiensis, two species that can be placed within Gentry’s informal Ditepalae Agave group, and propose that they are clonal relict domesticates. The two species have affinities with A. chrysantha, A. shrevei, and A. delamateri, the latter also a central Arizona pre-Columbian domesticate. We provide a key to distinguish these species from other agaves in central Arizona and adjacent northern Mexico with which they may be confused. The discovery of these two new species brings the total number of putative Arizona Agave domesticates to five species.  相似文献

Materials are presented to the effect thatPhoradendron californicum Nutt., the nomenclatural type of the genusPhoradendron (Viscaceae), is related to southern, cataphyllous species, not to northern, acataphyllous ones. The evidence consists of the frequent occurrence of basal cataphylls in the species, variation in basal phyllotaxy, and a basically biseriate arrangement of flowers on fertile internodes. The suggestion of this southern, cataphyllous affinity is supported by the recent discovery of a strictly cataphyllous Mexican species,P. olae Kuijt, which shows median basal phyllotaxy and is in many features extremely similar toP. californicum. The nomenclatural consequences of this discovery would lead to subgen.Boreales (Trel.) Engler (and probably subgen.Aequatoriales (Trel.) Engler) being synonymized under subgen.Phoradendron, characterized by basal cataphylls (though not in all species). However, no generic subdivision of any sort is supported at this time.  相似文献

Aim Dispersal is often assumed to be a major force in shaping macroecological patterns, but this is rarely tested. Here I describe macroecological patterns for two groups of Lesser Antillean birds and then use population genetic data to assess if differences in dispersal ability could be responsible for the groups’ contrasting patterns. Importantly, the population genetic data are derived independently from any data used to generate the macroecological patterns. Location The Lesser Antilles, Caribbean. Methods I used data from the literature to construct species–area curves and evaluate the decline in species compositional similarity with geographic distance (hereafter distance–decay) for two sets of bird communities in the Lesser Antilles, those found in rain forest and those in dry forest. I then used mitochondrial DNA sequences from island populations to assess the dispersal ability of rain forest and dry forest species. Results Rain forest species show steeper species–area curves and greater distance–decay in community similarity than dry forest species, patterns that could be explained by rain forest species having more limited dispersal ability. Both conventional analyses of M, the number of migrants per generation between populations, and alternative analyses of DA, the genetic distance between populations, suggest that rain forest species disperse between islands less frequently than dry forest species. Main conclusions Differences in dispersal ability are a plausible explanation for the contrasting macroecological patterns of rain forest and dry forest species. Additionally, historical factors, such as the taxon cycle and Pleistocene climate fluctuations, may have played a role in shaping the distribution patterns of Lesser Antillean birds.  相似文献

Rice rats (Sigmodontinae: Oryzomyini) are abundant in the Late Quaternary fossil record and in Holocene pre‐Columbian archaeological middens across the Lesser Antilles. All of these rice rats are now extinct, and their regional diversity and systematics remain extremely poorly understood. We redescribe all of the region's rice rat taxa known from adequate diagnostic material (Megalomys desmarestii, Megalomys luciae, and Oligoryzomys victus), and describe a new genus and species, Pennatomys nivalis gen. et sp. nov. , from archaeological sites on St. Eustatius, St. Kitts, and Nevis, which formed a single larger island during Quaternary low sea‐level stands. Cladistic analysis supports the inclusion of O. victus within Oligoryzomys, and identifies Megalomys as a sister group of the large‐bodied genera Sigmodontomys or Sigmodontomys + Nectomys, suggesting that large body size in Megalomys represents phyletic gigantism rather than ‘island gigantism’. Megalomys and Pennatomys belong to an oryzomyine clade that has undergone remarkable radiation throughout the oceanic and continental‐shelf islands of the Neotropical region, but these genera do not represent a monophyletic group within the Nectomys subclade, indicating multiple over‐water colonization events of the Lesser Antillean island chain. Use of Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plants in México and worldwide has a long history, but the morphological and photosynthetic aspects of these plants have only been considered recently. Emphasis in this article is on the daily net CO2 uptake ability by three species of agaves and three species of cacti that are currently extensively cultivated in México for beverages, food, fodder, and forage ‐ Agave mapisaga, A. salmiana, A. tequilana, Opuntia ficus‐indica, O. robusta and Stenocereus queretaroensis. Data under controlled conditions are used to help interpret seasonal net CO2 uptake patterns observed in the field. These CAM plants have instantaneous and total daily net CO2 uptake values similar to those for highly productive C3 and C4 crops. The future increase in the cultivated area of CAM plants will have both agronomical and ecological ramifications because of the ability of these plants to endure prolonged drought and to sequester carbon during extended dry periods when few C3 and C4 crops and non‐CAM native plants can fix atmospheric CO2.  相似文献

Agave manantlanicola, a new endemic species from the high altitude mountains of the Sierra de Manantlán in western Mexico, is described and illustrated. The species belongs to the subgenus Littaea and Gentry’s Amolae group. The new species is compared to other morphologically similar species from western Mexico, including Agave attenuata subsp. attenuata, A. attenuata subsp. dentata, A. bakeri, A. chazaroi, and A. vazquezgarciae. Fungi represent a group of eukaryotic microorganisms that are an important part of the plant microbiome. They produce a vast array of metabolites, including fungal volatile organic compounds (fVOCs). However, the diversity and biological activities of fVOCs emitted by the mycobiota of plants native to arid and semi-arid environments remain under-explored. We characterized the chemical diversity of fVOCs produced by 22 representative members of the microbiome of agaves and cacti using SPME-GC–MS. We further tested the effects of pure compounds on the growth and development of Arabidopsis thaliana and host plants. Members of the Sordariomycetes (nine strains), Eurotiomycetes (three), Dothideomycetes (eight), Saccharomycetes (one) and Mucoromycetes (one) were included in our study. We identified 94 fungal organic volatiles classified into nine chemical classes. Terpenes showed the greatest chemical diversity, followed by alcohols and aliphatic compounds. We discovered that camphene and benzyl benzoate, together with the widely distributed and already tested benzyl alcohol, 2-phenylethyl alcohol and 3-methyl-1-butanol, improved plant growth and development of A. thaliana, Agave tequilana and Agave salmiana. Our studies on the fungal VOCs from desert plants underscore an untapped chemical diversity with promising biotechnological applications.  相似文献

Fossil cephalopods are rare in the Antillean region. A deformed conch of a kossmaticeratid ammonite,Pseudokossmaticerasl sp., from the Maastrichtian of the Blue Mountain Inlier is the first ammonite from southeastern Jamaica. This tentative systematic assignment is in agreement with the age otherwise assigned to these rocks.Cimomia sp. cf.C. vaughani (Gardner) is a hercoglossid nautiloid from the Lower-Middle Eocene Chapelton Formation of western central Jamaica. This is only the fourth nautiloid from this unit; all previous records were ofHercoglossa sp. The specimen is unusual amongst Antillean fossil cephalopods in including the sponge boringEntobia isp., probably indicating a period of post-mortem residence on the sea floor.   相似文献

Rhamnogalacturonan II (RG-II), a small complex pectic polysaccharide is released from Agave pulquero stems (Agave mapisaga), after the production period of aguamiel. RG-II was obtained by treatment with two commercial liquefying enzyme preparations, it was isolated by size-exclusion chromatography and characterized. RG-IIs contains diagnostic sugars such as apiose, 2-O-methyl-l-fucose, 2-O-methyl-d-xylose, aceric acid, Kdo and Dha. Glycosyl-linkage compositions of the Agave pulquero RG-II like structures are similar to the theoretical model described through sycamore RG-II structure. The presence of 3′-linked apiose indicates that the obtained juice from Agave pulquero plant contains the free RG-II dimer. Thus, when pectinolytic enzyme preparations are used to process Agave pulquero (A. mapisaga), RG-II is released as one of the main soluble polysaccharide fraction.  相似文献

Agaves can grow in marginal arid and semiarid lands where their special ecological and physiological adaptations to environmental conditions give them the potential to produce substantial biomass. Agave americana was the first agave species shown to be a Crassulacean Acid Metabolism plant, with CO2 uptake occurring primarily at night and with high water‐use efficiency (photosynthesis/transpiration). A. salmiana and A. mapisaga can have high nocturnal net CO2 uptake rates and high productivities averaging 40 tonnes dry weight ha?1 yr?1. Agaves can benefit from the increases in temperature and atmospheric CO2 levels accompanying global climate change. An Environmental Productivity Index can predict the effects of soil and environmental factors on CO2 uptake and hence on the regions appropriate for cultivating agaves. In turn, their increased cultivation can support the production of innovative earth‐friendly commodities that can be used as new bioenergy feedstocks.  相似文献

The Lesser Rhea (Pterocnemia-Rhea-pennata pennata) has a complex reproductive system that combines polygyny with sequential polyandry, in which males build the nest, fully incubate the eggs and care for the young. As occurs with the Greater Rhea (Rhea americana), Lesser Rhea females sporadically lay eggs outside the nest (‘orphan’ eggs), which are not incubated and thus fail to hatch. We have examined the orphan eggs of Lesser Rhea over two separate breeding seasons to determine their abundance and fertility status. During 2004 and 2005, weekly ground searches for orphan eggs were conducted in a wild population of Lesser Rhea in northwestern Patagonia, Argentina. During these searches the total number of nests, eggs in each nest and orphan eggs laid outside the nests was recorded. Orphan eggs represented approximately 7% of the total eggs laid in a breeding season. Six fresh orphan eggs were artificially incubated, four of them being fertile. Orphan eggs seemed to have two origins: some were laid near deserted nests in the early to mid-reproductive season; others were probably laid by first-time breeders and were found later in the reproductive season. Given the near-threatened status of the Lesser Rhea, harvesting and artificial incubation of orphan eggs, which otherwise would be unproductive, may contribute significantly to the conservation of this species, i.e., ‘recovered’ birds could be used for reintroduction or reinforcement of wild Lesser Rhea populations.  相似文献

Potential of Plants from the Genus Agave as Bioenergy Crops   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Agave is a succulent genus within the monocot family Agavaceae. The plants have a large rosette of thick fleshy leaves, each ending generally in a sharp point, and are native to arid and semi-arid regions from the southern USA to northern South America. The most important commercial species is Agave tequilana grown for production of tequila. Several cultivated species of Agave such as Agave sislana and Agave salmiana can perform well in areas where rainfall is insufficient for the cultivation of many C3 and C4 crops. The key feature of the crassulacean acid metabolism photosynthetic pathway used by agaves is the stomata opening and CO2 uptake during the night, thus allowing less water to be lost by transpiration. Alcoholic beverages, sweeteners, fibers, and some specialty chemicals are currently the main products coming from agave plants. The recovered information related to productivity, biofuel processability, by-products, etc. suggests that some Agave species have a real potential to compete economically with other bioenergy crops. But more than compete, it could complement the list of bioenergy crops due to its capacity to grow with very little rainfall and/or inputs and still reach good amount of biomass, so unused semi-arid land could be productive. Although Agave has great potential to be developed as a bioenergy crop, more laboratory and field research are needed.  相似文献

Invasive populations of green iguanas (Iguanidae: Iguana iguana) are widely established beyond their native Central, South American, and Lesser Antillean range in various islands of the Pacific, Florida USA, and in the Greater Caribbean Region. Although widespread, information about these invasions is scarce. Here we determine the origin of invasive populations of green iguanas in Puerto Rico, Fiji, The Caymans, Florida USA, The Dominican Republic, the US Virgin Islands (USVI) of St. Thomas and St. Croix, and a U.S.A pet store. We sampled 120 individuals from these locations and sequenced one mitochondrial (ND4) and two nuclear (PAC and NT3) loci. We also include a preliminary characterization of population structure throughout Puerto Rico using six microsatellite loci to genotype individuals across 10 sampling sites. Comparing the genealogical relationships of all our samples to published sequencing data from the native range, we found that sampled populations were largely a product of populations from Colombia and El Salvador; two countries with multiple, industrial-size pet iguana farming operations. Notably, we found that haplotypes detected exclusively in the USVI and Puerto Rico’s outlying island of Vieques are closely linked to green iguanas native to Saba and Montserrat (Lesser Antilles); a clade not reported in the pet trade. Our population genetic analyses did not reveal isolation among sampling sites in Puerto Rico, rather the evidence supported admixture across the island. This study highlights the roles of the pet trade and lack of regulation in the spread of green iguanas beyond their native range.
