The invasiveness of algal species can be facilitated by chemo-ecological traits that allow the establishment of invasive species in a highly competitive environment. Anti-bacterial, anti-quorum sensing, anti-diatom and anti-larval properties of the invasive brown macroalga Sargassum muticum and three native Sargassum species from Oman waters were compared in laboratory and field experiments to assess whether these traits have the potential to facilitate the invasion process. Only the extract of S. muticum inhibited bacterial growth of four marine bacterial strains and quorum sensing in the reporter strain Chromobacterium violaceum CV017. Settlement, growth and survival of the diatom Cylindrotheca closterium and larvae of the bryozoan Bugula neritina were significantly inhibited by all Sargassum extracts in laboratory experiments. However, crude extracts of S. muticum had the strongest antifouling effect. Natural tissue-level concentrations of S. muticum extract reduced diatom density to about 20% compared with the controls. Larval mortality increased by 80–90% compared with controls with S. muticum extract diluted to one-third natural levels. Significant anti-diatom activity of S. muticum was confirmed in the field experiments with Sargassum extracts embedded in a phytagel matrix. Comparison of non-polar compounds by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry demonstrated that S. muticum extracts had overall fewer secondary metabolites but more species-unique compounds than extracts of native Sargassum spp. The greater antifouling defence of invasive vs. native Sargassum species indicates a selective trait that may contribute to the invasion success of S. muticum.

Two populations of Chaetophora elegans (Roth) C. Agardh and two of Stigeoclonium helveticum Vischer were investigated for microhabitat characteristics and morphological variation in streams of São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. Different patterns of microhabitat distribution were found between species investigated. Populations of C, elegans were distributed under relatively narrow microhabitat conditions (high irradiance, low depth, moderate to high current velocity, rocky substrata and lower values of niche width) and showing little morphometric variation (colony diameter, main axis cell size, and apical branch number), Stigeoclonium helveticum occurred under more diverse microhabitat conditions, revealed by lack of significant difference between sampling units with and without the alga and wider niche width, but also exhibited relatively narrow morphometric variation (plant length, main axis cell and ateral branch cell sizes). The narrow microhabitat conditions and smaller niche width of C. elegans can explain its low abundance (percentage cover) in streams from the area studied as well as in other regions of São Paulo State, In contrast, the wider variation of microhabitat conditions and the higher niche widths of S. helveticum suggest that this green alga is able to grow in a high number of stream ecosystems in the region investigated, ranging from undisturbed to highly disturbed habitats. Thus. the results suggest that S. helveticum is a generalist species.

Sargassum muticum was first observed in Scandinavia in Limfjorden (Denmark) in 1984, where it is now the most abundant and conspicuous macroalga. Despite the ecological importance of Sargassum, few studies have described seasonal patterns within Scandinavian Sargassum beds. We quantified the dynamics of macroalgae among years and seasons along a depth transect through a typical Sargassum bed in Limfjorden. The annual investigations (summer transects 1989–1999) showed a gradual increase in the dominance of Sargassum, especially at the 2–4-m depth interval. Significant seasonal dynamics in macroalgal abundance and assemblage structure were observed in this depth interval; the mean cover of Sargassum varied from ca. 5% (autumn and winter) to 25% (mid-summer). In comparison, encrusting algae had high and relatively stable covers throughout the year (ca. 20%). Other perennial macroalgae had low mean covers (<2%) characterized by a few patches of higher abundances. Except from a spring bloom, filamentous algae had low covers throughout the year. Within this relatively uniform bed, Sargassum abundance was positively related to boulders >10 cm in diameter and species richness was negatively correlated to depth and stones <10 cm in diameter, and non-correlated to other algal form-groups or grazer densities. Thus, in Limfjorden, the distribution of Sargassum is determined by large- (>6 m) and small-scale (<1 m) depth differences where low light limits Sargassum at depth, physical disturbance and sediment stress limits Sargasum in shallow waters, and the presence of stable boulder substratum facilitate Sargassum. Competition for space from other macroalgae and herbivory are probably of minor importance.

The random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) was used for the molecular characterisation and identification of Sargassum spp. A total of 17 samples of Sargassum (Sargassaceae, Fucales) was obtained from various localities around Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. On the basis of morphological characteristics, the samples were tentatively grouped into five species: Sargassum baccularia, S. glaucescens, S. oligocystum, S. polycystum and S. siliquosum. By RAPD-PCR, five of 31 random primers tested generated reproducible amplification products, and polymorphic loci were detected by four of them (OPA02, OPA03, OPA04, OPA13). The RAPD-PCR profiles did not correlate with the morphological grouping into five species and extensive variation was detected between different isolates of the same species. A 450 base pair fragment generated using OPA13 was detected in 12 of 17 samples of Sargassum. This fragment was also present in profiles from Turbinaria (Sargassaceae). This study suggests that RAPD-PCR is useful in discriminating individual samples of the genus Sargassum and in developing fingerprints for them.

Sequences of the end of the 5.8S gene and the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS‐2) of nuclear ribosomal DNA have been determined for 19 species of the brown algal genus Sargassum (Sargassaceae), representing three subgenera and eight sections (sections are in parentheses): Phyllotrichia, Bactrophycus (Teretia, Spongocarpus, Halochloa and Repentia) and Sargassum (Acanthocarpicae, Malacocarpicae, Zygocarpicae) to assess the taxonomic position of the section Phyllocystae traditionally included within the Bactrophycus. The sequence of Myagropsis myagroides (Mertens ex Turner) Fensholt (Sargassaceae) was used as an outgroup. Sequences of ITS‐2 were analyzed using neighbor‐joining, parsimony and maximum likelihood methods. The results showed the existence of three clades in Sargassum, corresponding to the three subgenera. The subgenus Phyllotrichia is positioned near the outgroup. Two robust clades were obtained, one corresponding to the subgenus Bactrophycus and the other to the subgenus Sargassum. Sargassum mcclurei Setchell and Sargassum quinhonense Nguyen, the two Phyllocystae investigated, are close to species belonging to the section Zygocarpicae in the subgenus Sargassum. A transfer of the section Phyllocystae to the subgenus Sargassum is therefore proposed on the basis of molecular data (ITS‐2) and morphological data (receptacles and basal leaf).

Sequences from the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer‐2 (ITS‐2) were compared among species of Sargassaceae including the genera Sargassum and Hizikia. Species of different subgenera and sections of Sargassum were used to assess the taxonomic relationships within the genus, especially the subdivisions of the subgenus Bactrophycus. Sequences were aligned in accordance with their common secondary structure. Phylogenetic trees were constructed using neighbor‐joining, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony methods with three species of Turbinaria as outgroups. The resulting phylogenetic trees showed that the genus Sargassum is divided into three clades corresponding to the subgenera Phyllotrichia, Sargassum and Bactrophycus. This last subgenus is further divided into four distinct groups: a Spongocarpus clade, a Teretia clade, a Hizikia clade, and a Halochloa/ Repentia clade. The position of the section Phyllo‐cystae, excluded from the subgenus Bactrophycus and included within the subgenus Sargassum is once again confirmed by the present study. Current results strongly support the assignation of Hizikia fusiformis to the genus Sargassum. Based on morphological differences and a distinct position in the molecular trees, Hizikia should be recognized as a section in the subgenus Bactrophycus so that Hizikia (Okamura) Yoshida, stat. nov. is proposed. A remarkably low divergence of ITS‐2 sequences was observed for the species in the sections Repentia and Halochloa, suggesting very recent radiation of these species. The subgenus Sargassum is divided into three clades corresponding to the three known sections: Acanthocarpicae, Malacocarpicae and Zygocarpicae, previously recognized by the morphology of receptacles. The position of Sargassum duplicatum, S. carpophyllum, S.yendoi, S. piluliferum and S. patens within the subgenus Sargassum is discussed.

  • Intraspecific trait variation and trait–climate relationships are crucial for understanding a species’ response to climate change. However, these phenomena have rarely been studied for tree species. Euptelea pleiospermum is a relict tree species with a wide distribution in China that offers a novel opportunity to examine such relationships.
  • Here, we measured 13 leaf traits of E. pleiospermum in 20 sites across its natural distribution in China. We investigated the extent of trait variation at local and regional scales, and developed geographic and climate models to explain trait variation at the regional scale.
  • We documented intraspecific trait variation among leaf traits of Epleiospermum at local and regional scales. Five traits exhibited relatively high trait variation: leaf area, leaf density and three leaf economic traits (leaf dry matter content, specific leaf area [SLA] and leaf phosphorus concentration). Significant trait–geography correlations were mediated by local climate. Most leaf trait variation could be explained (from 24% to 64%) by geographic or climate variables, except leaf width, leaf thickness, leaf dry matter content and leaf length–width ratio. Latitude and temperature were the strongest predictors of trait variation throughout the distribution of Epleiospermum in China, and temperature explained more leaf trait variation than precipitation. In particular, we showed that leaves had longer petiole lengths, higher SLA and lower densities in northern Epleiospermum populations. We suggest that northern Epleiospermum populations are adapting to higher latitudinal environments via high growth rate (higher SLA) and low construction investment strategies (lower leaf densities), benefitting northern migration.
  • Overall, we demonstrate that intraspecific trait variation reflects Epleiospermum response to the local environment. We call for consideration of intraspecific trait variation to examine specific climate response questions. In addition, provenance experiments using widely distributed species are needed to separate trait variation resulting from genetic differentiation and plastic responses to environmental change.

The determination of the members of Charales (Charophyceae) is not easy. The main reason of this is a wide range of variation in vegetative characters within most of the species. Many features such as the extent of branchlet cortication, the degree of incrustation, length and number of bract cells, spine cells, stipulodes, diameter of the main axis and oospore size and color do not have universal taxonomic significance. In similar, many Nitella species characters such as: general habitus, branchlets and presence of the top segment (mucro), are helpful in determination, however they are often not developed. In this case, the features of oospore wall ornamentation revealed by light and scanning microscopy can be important taxonomic characters of the Charales. The present study shows interspecific variations of the oospore in two Nitella species from Poland which can be helpful in correct determination of both species. Some of the oospore features like number of striae and fossa width can not be used, as they appeared statistically unimportant, and cannot be used in distinguishing between both species. The presented results are the first detailed report of oospore wall ornamentation pattern from Poland for the species studied. Oospore features are presented in detail on the background of some additional tips and among them particularly: length and width of the oospore, ISI idex, width of fossa, width of striae and number of striae.

Sargassum C. Agardh (1820) is a taxonomically difficult genus distributed worldwide and reported as the most species‐rich genus of the Fucales. It is especially abundant in the Pacific where decreasing species richness is reported to occur from west to east. New Caledonia has been recognized as one of the hotspots of Sargassum diversity; however, species lists available for this region are old and incomplete and have not yet been updated with regard to the latest taxonomic revisions published. This study aimed at revising Sargassum diversity in New Caledonia and to assess its geographic affinities with neighboring Pacific regions. We used combined morphological and DNA analyses on new collections and examined numerous type specimens. Although 45 taxa have been listed in the literature, most of them have been either transferred to synonymy since or misidentified, and in this study, only 12 taxa were recognized as occurring in New Caledonia. They belong to the subgenus Sargassum sect. Binderianae (Grunow) Mattio et Payri (2), sect. Ilicifoliae (J. Agardh) Mattio et Payri (2), sect. Polycystae Mattio et Payri. (1), sect. Sargassum (4), sect. Zygocarpicae (J. Agardh) Setch. (2), and subgenus Phyllotrichia (Aresh.) J. Agardh (1). New Caledonian Sargassum flora appeared as the second richest in the region after the Pacific coast of Australia, with which it has shown high similarity, and shared species with all neighboring regions. One species, S. turbinarioides Grunow, is considered as endemic to New Caledonia. The low genetic diversity detected among several polymorphic species belonging to sect. Sargassum is also discussed.

Stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) were used to investigate feeding patterns of larval and early juvenile pelagic fishes in slope waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Contribution of organic matter supplied to fishes and trophic position within this pelagic food web was estimated in 2007 and 2008 by comparing dietary signatures of the two main producers in this ecosystem: phytoplankton [based on particulate organic matter (POM)] and Sargassum spp. Stable isotope ratios of POM and pelagic Sargassum spp. were significantly different from one another with δ13C values of POM depleted by 3–6‰ and δ15N values enriched by 2 relative to Sargassum spp. Stable isotope ratios were significantly different among the five pelagic fishes examined: blue marlin Makaira nigricans, dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus, pompano dolphinfish Coryphaena equiselis, sailfish Istiophorus platypterus and swordfish Xiphias gladius. Mean δ13C values ranged almost 2 among fishes and were most depleted in I. platypterus. In addition, mean δ15N values ranged 4–5 with highest mean values found for both C. hippurus and C. equiselis and the lowest mean value for M. nigricans during both years. Increasing δ13C or δ15N with standard length suggested that shifts in trophic position and diet occurred during early life for several species examined. Results of a two‐source mixing model suggest approximately an equal contribution of organic matter by both sources (POM = 55%; pelagic Sargassum spp. = 45%) to the early life stages of pelagic fishes examined. Contribution of organic matter, however, varied among species, and sensitivity analyses indicated that organic source estimates changed from 2 to 13% for a δ13C fractionation change of ±0·25‰ or a δ15N fractionation change of ± 1·0‰ relative to original fractionation values.

This innovative study investigates 18 Turbinaria and Sargassum brown seaweed samples from three archipelagos of the South West Pacific Ocean. The phenolic content of crude and size‐fractionated extracts was determined by the Folin‐Ciocalteu method; fucoxanthin was measured using high performance liquid chromatography. Although the phenolic content proved to be low for the species of both genera tested, the levels in the species of Turbinaria were higher than those of Sargassum tested, except in the Fiji islands where both species produced similar contents. These investigations also highlighted variations of total phenolic content with spatial, reef morphology and depth. A large number of small phenolic compounds (<2000 Da) were observed irrespective of the genus analyzed. Nevertheless, the composition of the phenolic pool varied in relation with the genus, the archipelago from which the material was collected, geomorphological features and the depth of each collection field site. A similar observation was for fucoxanthin content and in general, the measured constituents of the Turbinaria were less than those of the Sargassum species. The results are discussed in terms of inter‐ and intra‐specific variability. Variations in both phenolic and fucoxanthin content were noted in tropical members of the Sargassaceae; such differences could be a result of specific chemical defense mechanisms adopted by members of each genus.

Synopsis We assess morphological diversity of species of the Cynoscion group in the Gulf of Guayaquil (GOG) using traditional morphometric methods. Five species from the GOG assemblage (C. albus, C. analis, C. phoxocephalus, C. squamipinnis, and Isopisthus remifer) are compared to four species from a relatively well-studied assemblage in the western Atlantic (C. arenarius, C. nebulosus, C. nothus, and C. regalis). The two regional species assemblages broadly overlap in morphology, but sympatric species segregate relatively well within each assemblage. The GOG species segregate primarily along the major axis of shape variation in the study, which is associated with variation in the anal, second dorsal, and caudal fins. The western Atlantic species segregate primarily along the second major axis of shape variation, which is most strongly associated with variation in gill raker length, and less strongly with pectoral fin length, eye diameter, and length of the third dorsal spine. Patterns of morphological divergence among the western Atlantic species support the hypothesis that morphological divergence is associated with ecological divergence. Comparisons across assemblages indicate that morphological divergence among species in the GOG is substantial. Consequently, Cynoscion species in the GOG may be highly divergent in ecological habits, which would have important management implications, but further ecological research is needed. This study provides a first glimpse into the major patterns of morphological diversification in the Cynoscion group.1Bryant D., E. Rodenburg, T. Cox & D. Nielsen. 1995.
