Herein, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was grafted onto magnetic MWCNT/iron oxide particles by using low temperature plasma-induced technique to synthesize a novel nanocomposite. The prepared composite (denoted as CD/MWCNT/iron oxide) exhibited high magnetic property (saturation magnetization M(s)=37.8emu/g) and good dispersion property in aqueous solution. Batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the application potential of CD/MWCNT/iron oxide in the decontamination of Zn(II) from aqueous solutions. The sorption amount of Zn(II) on CD/MWCNT/iron oxide was higher than that of Zn(II) on MWCNT/iron oxides and oxidized MWCNTs, indicating that the grafted β-CD could enhance the sorption capacity of CD/MWCNT/iron oxide composite toward Zn(II) by providing multiple hydroxyl functional groups. Due to its high magnetic, CD/MWCNT/iron oxide could be easily separated from aqueous solution with an external magnetic field. Regeneration studies suggested that CD/MWCNT/iron oxide can support long term use as a cost-effective material in sewage treatment with minimum replacement costs.  相似文献

We report the preparation of stable dispersion of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using carminic acid (CA) as a dispersing agent. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) results confirmed that MWCNT is well dispersed in CA aqueous solution and CA has been well adsorbed at MWCNT walls. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and UV-vis absorption spectra results also confirmed the adsorption of CA at MWCNT. To develop a highly selective amperometric biosensor for H(2)O(2) and iodate, the model enzyme catalase (CAT) was immobilized at CACNT modified glassy carbon electrode surface. The immobilized CAT exhibits well defined quasi reversible redox peaks at a formal potential (E°') of -0.559V in 0.05M pH 7 phosphate buffer solution (PBS). The proposed CAT/CACNT biosensor exhibits excellent amperometric response towards H(2)O(2) and iodate in the linear concentration range between 10μM to 3.2mM and 0.01-2.16mM. The sensitivity values are 287.98μAmM(-1)cm(-2) and 0.253mAmM(-1)cm(-2), respectively. Moreover, the developed CAT biosensor exhibits high affinity for H(2)O(2) and iodate with good selectivity.  相似文献

MWCNTs/TiO2 nanocomposite was prepared by oxidising MWCNT in H2SO4/HNO3 then decorating it with TiO2-p25 nanopowder. The composites were characterised using XRD, TEM, FT-IR PL and UV−vis spectroscopy. The TEM images have shown TiO2 nanoparticles immobilised onto the sidewalls of the MWCNTs. The UV-vis spectrum confirms that the nanocomposites can significantly absorb more light in the visible regions compared with the commercial TiO2 (P25). The catalytic activity of these nanocomposites was determined by photooxidation of MB aqueous solution in the presence of visible light. The MWCNTs/TiO2 (1:3) mass ratio showed maximum degradation efficiency. However, its activity was more favourable in alkaline and a neutral pH than an acidic medium.  相似文献

DNA-wrapped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were successfully obtained by a simple sonication treatment method. The obtained materials were characterized in detail by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). An SEM image showed that MWCNTs were dispersed sufficiently and covered entirely with DNA. This resulted in high aqueous solubility of the products, with a stability of more than several months. The interaction between DNA and MWCNTs was confirmed by Raman measurements and was ascribed to the strong π-π interactions between the backbones of DNA and the surface of carbon nanotubes. The cyclic voltammograms showed that the composite exhibited excellent electrochemical properties. Experimental results also revealed that the high dispersion of DNA-assisted MWCNTs presented a better property compared with pristine MWCNTs. This facile method for obtaining water-soluble MWCNTs has great potential application for both bioscience and biotechnology.  相似文献

The performance of Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC) actuator was significantly enhanced by incorporating surfactant-assisted processable Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) into a Nafion solution. Cationic surfactant Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) was employed to disperse MWCNTs in the Nafion matrix, forming a homogeneous and stable dispersion of nanotubes. The processing did not involve any strong acid treatment and thus effectively preserved the excellent electronic properties associated with MWCNT. The as-obtained MWCNT/Nafion-IPMC actuator was tested in terms of conductivity, bulk and surface morphology, blocking force and electric current. It was shown that the blocking force and the current of the new IPMC are 2.4 times and 1.67 times higher compared with a pure Nafion-based IPMC. Moreover, the MWCNT/IPMC performance is much better than previously reported Nafion-IPMC doped by acid-treated MWCNT. Such significantly improved performance should be attributed to the improvement of electrical property associated with the addition of MWCNTs without acid treatment.  相似文献

A model-free approach has been used to study the association of peptides onto multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in aqueous solution at ambient pH to understand the molecular basis of interaction of the peptides with MWCNT. The peptides obtained by tryptic digestion of cytochrome P450cam from P. putida were allowed to interact with MWCNT, and several peptides were found to bind to the nanotube leading to formation of stable homogeneous dispersion of the bionano conjugates of MWCNT. The peptides bound to the MWCNT were separated from the unbound peptides and sequence analyses by tandem MS/MS technique identified the strongly bound peptides as well as the unbound and the weakly bound peptides. The peptide-MWCNT conjugate was further characterized by TEM as well as Raman, FTIR, vis-NIR absorption, and circular dichroism spectroscopy. A model based on the hydrophobicity of residues in the peptides suggested that the amphiphilic peptides with localized hydrophobic residues at the center or at one end of the sequence form stable dispersions of the peptide-MWCNT conjugates.  相似文献

In this study, the mechanism of the interaction between multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and catalase was investigated by fluorescence, UV–vis, and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy under physiological conditions. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of catalase by MWCNTs was shown to be a static quenching procedure and was a result of the formation of a catalase–MWCNT complex. The secondary structure and conformation of the catalase adsorbed on MWCNTs was determined by CD and UV‐vis spectroscopy, and the results indicate that the catalase in this complex is partially unfolded with its lost in α‐helical content and obtainment in β‐sheet content. Moreover, binding of MWCNTs to catalase inhibited the enzymatic activity, which may trigger some toxic effects and undesirable physiological consequences. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cryptococcus neoformans is rich in polysaccharides of the cell wall and capsule. Dectin‐2 recognizes high‐mannose polysaccharides and plays a central role in the immune response to fungal pathogens. Previously, we demonstrated Dectin‐2 was involved in the activation of dendritic cells upon stimulation with C. neoformans, suggesting the existence of a ligand recognized by Dectin‐2. In the present study, we examined the cell wall structures of C. neoformans contributing to the Dectin‐2‐mediated activation of immune cells. In a NFAT‐GFP reporter assay of the reported cells expressing Dectin‐2, the lysates, but not the whole yeast cells, of an acapsular strain of C. neoformans (Cap67) delivered Dectin‐2‐mediated signaling. This activity was detected in the supernatant of β‐glucanase‐treated Cap67 and more strongly in the semi‐purified polysaccharides of this supernatant using ConA‐affinity chromatography (ConA‐bound fraction), in which a large amount of saccharides, but not protein, were detected. Treatment of this supernatant with periodic acid and the addition of excessive mannose, but not glucose or galactose, strongly inhibited this activity. The ConA‐bound fraction of the β‐glucanase‐treated Cap67 supernatant was bound to Dectin‐2‐Fc fusion protein in a dose‐dependent manner and strongly induced the production of interleukin‐12p40 and tumour necrosis factor‐α by dendritic cells; this was abrogated under the Dectin‐2‐deficient condition. Finally, 98 kDa mannoprotein (MP98) derived from C. neoformans showed activation of the reporter cells expressing Dectin‐2. These results suggested that a ligand with mannose moieties may exist in the cell walls and play a critical role in the activation of dendritic cells during infection with C. neoformans.  相似文献

Background

Removal of pathogens from water is one way to prevent waterborne illness. In this paper, we developed dual functional carbon nanotube (CNT) modified filters for bacterial capture and inactivation, utilizing multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) to coat on commercially available filters and making use of the exceptional adsorption property of CNTs to adsorb a natural antimicrobial peptide-nisin on it. Two types of MWCNTs with different outer layer diameters were used (MWCNTs1: <8 nm in diameter; MWCNTs2: 10–20 nm in diameter).

Results

The thickness of MWCNT layers, surface morphology, and surface hydrophobicity of both types of MWCNT coated filters were characterized. The MWCNT coating on filters significantly increased the surface hydrophobicity. The absorption of nisin and the capture of bacterial pathogens were correlated with increased surface hydrophobicity. The MWCNTs1 and MWCNTs2 filters with 1.5 mg MWCNTs loading captured 2.44 and 3.88 log of cells, respectively, from aqueous solutions containing a total of ~106 CFU/mL cells. Nisin deposit at the amount of 0.5 mg on the surfaces of MWCNT filters significantly reduced the viability of captured B. anthracis cells by 95.71–97.19 %, and inhibited the metabolic activities of the captured cells by approximately 98.3 %.

Conclusions

The results demonstrated that the MWCNT-nisin filters achieved dual functions in bacterial pathogen capture and inhibition in one single filtration step, which is potentially applicable in removing undesired microorganisms from water sources and inhibiting captured Gram positive bacteria activities.

The present study demonstrates covalent immobilization of Kluyveromyces lactis β galactosidase on functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Highly efficient surface modification of MWCNTs was achieved by glutaraldehyde for binding greater amount of enzyme. X-ray diffraction analysis and UV visible spectroscopy of MWCNTs showed them to be entirely dispersive in aqueous solution. Transmission electron microscopy showed that MWCNTs were of 20 nm size. Thermogravimetric analysis further revealed the stability of glutaraldehyde modified MWCNT as an ideal matrix for enzyme immobilization. The optimal pH for soluble and immobilized β galactosidase was observed at pH 7.0 while the optimal operating temperatures were observed at 40 °C and 50 °C, respectively. Moreover, our findings demonstrated that β galactosidase immobilized on surface functionalized MWCNTs retained greater biocatalytic activity at higher galactose concentration, and upon repeated uses as compared to enzyme in solution.  相似文献

Despite their exceptionally high capacity, overlithiated layered oxides (OLO) have not yet been practically used in lithium‐ion battery cathodes due to necessary toxic/complex chemical activation processes and unsatisfactory electrochemical reliability. Here, a new class of ecofriendly chemical activation strategy based on amphiphilic deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA)‐wrapped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) is demonstrated. Hydrophobic aromatic bases of DNA have a good affinity for MWCNT via noncovalent π–π stacking interactions, resulting in core (MWCNT)‐shell (DNA) hybrids (i.e., DNA@MWCNT) featuring the predominant presence of hydrophilic phosphate groups (coupled with Na+) in their outmost layers. Such spatially rearranged Na+–phosphate complexes of the DNA@MWCNT efficiently extract Li+ from monoclinic Li2MnO3 of the OLO through cation exchange reaction of Na+–Li+, thereby forming Li4Mn5O12‐type spinel nanolayers on the OLO surface. The newly formed spinel nanolayers play a crucial role in improving the structural stability of the OLO and suppressing interfacial side reactions with liquid electrolytes, eventually providing significant improvements in the charge/discharge kinetics, cyclability, and thermal stability. This beneficial effect of the DNA@MWCNT‐mediated chemical activation is comprehensively elucidated by an in‐depth structural/electrochemical characterization.  相似文献

Highly luminescent, polymer nanocomposite films based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and monodispersed carbon dots (C‐dots) derived from multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), as coatings on substrates as well as free standing ones are obtained via solution‐based techniques. The synthesized films exhibit pH‐independent photoluminescence (PL) emission, which is an advantageous property compared with the pH‐dependent photoluminescence intensity variations, generally observed for the C‐dots dispersed in aqueous solution. The synthesized C‐dots and the nanocomposite films are characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra‐red spectroscopy ( FTIR), ultraviolet (UV) ? visible spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) techniques. The TEM image provides clear evidence for the formation of C‐dots of almost uniform shape and average size of about 8 nm, homogeneously dispersed in aqueous medium. The strong anchoring of C‐dots within the polymer matrix can be confirmed from the XRD results. The FTIR spectral studies conclusively establish the presence of oxygen functional groups on the surfaces of the C‐dots. The photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra of the nanocomposite films are broad, covering most part of the visible region. The PL spectra do not show any luminescence intensity variations, when the pH of the medium is changed from 1 to 11. The pH‐independent luminescence, shown by these films offers ample scope for using them as coatings for designing diagnostic and imaging tools in bio medical applications. The non‐toxic nature of these nanocomposite films has been established on the basis of cytotoxicity studies.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), the most promising material with unique characteristics, find its application in different fields ranging from composite materials to medicine and from electronics to energy storage. However, little is known about the mechanism behind the interaction of these particles with cells and their toxicity. So, here we investigated the adverse effects of multiwalled CNTs (MWCNTs) in rat lung epithelial (LE) cells. The results showed that the incubation of LE cells with 0.5–10 μg/mL of MWCNTs caused a dose‐ and time‐dependent increase in the formation of free radicals, the accumulation of peroxidative products, the loss of cell viability, and antioxidant depletion. The significant amount of incorporation of dUTPs in the nucleus after 24 h confirms the induction of apoptosis. It was also observed that there is an increase in the activity of both caspases‐3 and caspase‐8 in cells, with increases in time and the concentration of MWCNTs. No significant incorporation of dUTPs was observed in cells, incubated with z‐VAD‐fmk , which confirmed the role of caspases in DNA fragmentation. The present study reveals that MWCNTs induced oxidative stress and stimulated apoptosis signaling pathway through caspase activation in rat LE cell lines. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on plant growth and Cd/Pb accumulation was investigated on seedlings of three plant species including Brassica napus L., Helianthus annus L. and Cannabis sativa L. The experiment consisted of MWCNTs on three concentration levels (0, 10, 50 mg/L) and 200 μM CdCl2 or 500 μM Pb(NO3)2. MWCNTs application effectively improved root and shoot growth inhibited by Cd and Pb salts. In B. napus, total chlorophyll (Chl) content increased by both MWCNTs 10 and 50 mg/L exposure under cadmium or lead stress. MWCNT 10 mg/L mitigated the deleterious effects of Cd ions on total chlorophyll content of H. annus and C. sativa. Wherease higher concentration of MWCNTs decreased Chl content under either Cd or Pb treatments on sunflower seedlings. MWCNT10 effectivly raised cadmium accumulation in seedlings of all three species. MWCNT10 and 50 mg/L also caused higher Pb accumulation in canola and cannabis seedlings, respectively. Based on the results, it seems that the effects of MWCNTs on growth parameters and heavy metal accumulation in plant seedlings is strongly depends on heavy metal type, MWCNTs concentration and plant species.  相似文献

The interactions of poly‐L ‐glutamic acid and a cationic porphyrin derivative in aqueous solutions were studied by the combination of vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectroscopies. It was found that non‐covalent interactions between both agents influence the structure of the polymeric matrix and the guest porphyrins and vice versa, but the physico‐chemical properties of the solutions, especially the pH and the relative permittivity of the solvent, play a key role in the structure of the polypeptide part of the formed complexes. It was shown that the interaction with porphyrins prevents the precipitation of poly‐L ‐glutamic acid in aqueous solution at acidic pH. In special conditions, the porphyrins attached to the polypeptide probably possess face‐to‐face interaction as demonstrated by the enhancement of the characteristic ECD signal and the appearance of sidebands on its short and long wavelength sides. Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are highly attractive due to their high energy density, potentially low cost, and environmental compatibility. However, their commercialization has been greatly hindered by their poor cycle life and severe self‐discharge, which can be attributed to the polysulfides dissolution. To overcome these issues, much effort has been devoted to engineering the electrode structure and composition to improve the performance which is often expensive and laborious. In this study, an ultralight multiwall carbon nanotube/N‐doped carbon quantum dot (MWCNT/NCQD)‐coated separator is first designed, which is cost effective and facile. The MWCNTs/NCQDs‐coated separator is then applied in Li–S batteries. The MWCNTs/NCQDs coating provides a physical shield against polysulfide shuttling and chemical adsorption of polysulfides by MWCNTs and NCQDs. The synergetic effect of MWCNTs and NCQDs enables the production of Li–S cell with a relative high initial discharge capacity of 1330.8 mA h g?1 and excellent cyclic performance with a corresponding capacity fade rate of as low as 0.05% per cycle at 0.5 C over 1000 cycles. Excellent rate capability and anti‐self‐discharge behavior are also displayed. The design of MWCNTs/NCQDs‐coated separator is a viable approach for successfully developing practical Li–S batteries.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes are considered to be the ideal multi-functional filler, although there is some debate regarding their toxicity for bio-related applications. The bacteria, Gluconacetobacter xylinum, which produce bacterial cellulose, were cultured in a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) dispersed Hestrin and Schramm (HS) medium by shaking incubation. The MWCNTs were functionalized with polyethylene glycol to prepare a stable MWCNT-dispersed HS medium and its stability was characterized by measuring the transmittance of a pulsed near infrared light. To investigate the toxicity of the MWCNTs to bacteria, we also introduced a green fluorescent protein gene into the bacteria and observed the fluorescence via confocal microscopy to confirm the presence of live bacteria in the MWCNT-dispersed HS medium. On the bases of the electron microscopy observations, a substantial number of MWCNTs were found to be well-dispersed and attached to the surface of the bacterial cellulose fibrils.  相似文献

1. Interactions of proteins with neutral polysaccharides and such polyacids as polygalacturonic acid, chondroitin sulphate, RNA and DNA in a two-phase system composed of phenol and aqueous buffers in the pH range 1·5–10 were studied. 2. Analysis of the products of the interaction was facilitated by the absolute preference of the proteins studied for the phenol-rich phase at all pH values. 3. The polyacids, on the other hand, in the absence of interactions were recovered mainly from the aqueous phases. 4. The interaction, the extent of which was mainly determined by the pH-dependent ionization state of the reacting partners, followed the patterns of antigen–antibody interactions with a well-defined equivalence point (maximum point of precipitation) and with the formation of soluble complexes. 5. The soluble complexes formed below the equivalence point were composed of proteins with small amounts of polyacids attached, and so passed into the phenol-rich phase; those formed above the maximum precipitation point were polyacidic in character and found in the aqueous phases. 6. Glycoproteins, with small amounts of covalently linked sugar residues, passed quantitatively into the phenol-rich phases. 7. The possibilities of developing a method for the analysis of glycoproteins and other applications are discussed.  相似文献

Diesel-exhaust particles from two sources were dispersed in aqueous mixtures of dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, and were tested for genotoxicity. Diesel samples from the same sources were extracted with dichloromethane and transferred into dimethyl sulfoxide and subjected to the same assays. Both types of extractions yielded similar results in both the Salmonella mutagenicity assay and the sister-chromatid exchange assay using V79 cells. After separation of the samples into supernatant and sediment fractions, the activity of both diesel samples was shown to reside exclusively in the supernatant fraction for the solvent-extracted samples, and exclusively in the sedimented fraction for surfactant dispersed samples. These findings indicate that genotoxic activity associated with diesel particles inhaled into the lung may be made bioavailable by virtue of the solubilization/dispersion properties of pulmonary surfactant components.  相似文献

The interaction of thrombin and platelets was studied with a heterobifunctional photoactivable crosslinking agent. Radiolabeled thrombin that was modified with ethyl-N-5-azido-2-nitrobenzoylaminoacetimidate formed two types of complex with platelet proteins; platelet-associated complexes and supernatant complexes. The platelet-associated complexes formed within 20 s. Autoradiography after electrophoresis with sodium dodecyl sulfate indicated that these complexes had apparent masses of 210, 185, 155 and 125 kDa. Formation of the complexes was blocked by hirudin; this is consistent with crosslinking that was a direct consequences of the binding of thrombin to a specific receptor, since hirudin blocks thrombin-induced platelet activation and the saturable binding of thrombin to platelets. The labeled supernatant complex had an apparent mass of about 490 kDa. It also formed in the supernatant solution of platelets after activation with a divalent cation ionophore, suggesting a complex of thrombin with a secreted protein. The supernatant complex did not involve fibrinogen or α2-macroglobulin, but a similar complex was formed with partially purified secreted glycoprotein G (thrombin-sensitive protein, thrombospondin). Formation of the complex was blocked by hirudin. A similar complex was formed after prolonged (1 h) incubation without photoactivation. It is concluded that thrombin forms high-affinity, hirudin-sensitive complexes with secreted glycoprotein G, as well as with platelet surface proteins.  相似文献
