Eimeria alpacae, E. punoensis, E. lamae, and E. macusaniensis were identified in fecal samples from 189 llama (Lama glama (L.] adults and 50 llama crias (animals less than one year of age of any species in the genus Lama) from central and western Oregon. In both adults and crias, E. alpacae was the most common species found. The least common was E. macusaniensis, which was found in only two adults. Overall prevalence and numbers of animals with mixed infections was approximately twice as high in crias as in adults.  相似文献

Macropodids are the most diverse group of marsupial herbivores ever to have evolved. They have been the subject of more phylogenetic studies than any other marsupial family, yet relationships of several key clades remain uncertain. Two important problem areas have been the position of the merrnine (Lagostrophus fasciatus) and the phylogenetic proximity of tree‐kangaroos and rock‐wallabies. Our osteological analysis revealed strong support for a plesiomorphic clade ( Lagostrophinae subfam. nov. ) containing Lagostrophus and Troposodon, which is likely to have originated in the early Miocene. The extinct short‐faced kangaroos (Sthenurinae) emerged in the middle Miocene as the sister lineage to a clade containing all other living kangaroos and wallabies (Macropodinae). New Guinea forest wallabies ( Dorcopsini trib. nov. ) are the most plesiomorphic macropodines; the other two main lineages include tree‐kangaroos and rock‐wallabies (Dendrolagini), and ‘true’ kangaroos and wallabies (Macropodini). These phylogenetic outcomes are broadly consistent with the results of recent molecular studies, although conflicts remain over the relative positions of some macropodins (e.g. Setonix, Onychogalea, and Wallabia). Given the presence of derived dendrolagins and macropodins in early Pliocene localities, it is probable that most macropodine genera originated in the late Miocene. The eastern grey kangaroo, Macropus giganteus , and the western grey kangaroo, M. fuliginosus , are sibling species. The behaviour of 48 eastern grey kangaroos and 15 western grey kangaroos was observed for 249 h at Melbourne Zoo. Up to 31 eastern grey kangaroos and 38 western grey kangaroos were observed for 305 h where they occurred syntopically in the Grampians National Park.
In total, 46 social acts were identified in four social contexts between conspecifics. All but one of the acts were performed by both species in captivity, whereas fewer were seen performed by either species in the field. Five general acts were performed by all age/sex classes, and 10 acts occurred in mother-young contexts. High-intensity agonistic acts and all sexual acts were performed exclusively by adult males. In captivity, western grey males performed a truncated range of sexual acts directed at eastern grey females, but no interspecific sexual acts were performed by males of either species in the field, supporting the distinctiveness of the two species. The close evolutionary relationship between the two species was confirmed by high degree of concordance between their behavioural repertories, which differed only in the structure of the isolation call given by large pouch young.  相似文献

To compare the prevalence of Eimeria macusaniensis among midwestern llamas (Lama glama), alpacas (Lama pacos), and guanacos (Lama guanicoe), feces were obtained from Lama spp. in 10 states between October 1989 and February 1996. Feces were examined by centrifugal flotation in sugar solution (specific gravity--1.28-1.30), and oocysts were quantified by a modified McMaster method. Data were compared by host species and age classifications. Typical oocysts occurred in samples from 28% of 76 herds and 10.4% of 443 animals including 12% of 301 llamas, 7% of 115 alpacas, and 7.4% of 27 guanacos. Prevalence was significantly greater (P = 0.009) in animals < 1 yr of age in comparison to older animals for llams (22.1 v.s. 8.5%) and for all Lama spp. combined (17.1 vs. 8.4%). Fecal oocyst abundance was significantly greater (P = 0.001) in llamas < 1 yr of age in comparison to older llamas (30 vs. 16 oocysts per g of feces). Fecal oocyst intensities did not differ significantly. Prevalence in both age groups of midwestern llamas was greater than previously reported for llamas in the western United States. Prevalence in midwestern alpacas < 1 yr of age was lower than reported for alpacas of similar age in South America, but oocyst intensities were similar. These results indicate that infection with E. macusaniensis is more common in Lama spp. in North America than previously recognized.  相似文献

Abstract This study aimed to establish whether red‐bellied pademelons (Thylogale billiardierii) and Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus rufogriseus) alter their foraging distribution in open habitat, in response to food availability and distance to protective shelter, the latter used as a measure of predation risk. Scat counts were used as a measure of the presence or absence of these macropods over two plantations (Russell and Dunalley). These plantations differed in both their on‐site food and shelter characteristics (the presence or absence of windrows). Logistic regression indicated that at Russell, which had low food availability but the presence of on‐site shelter, probability of scats of both species increased with the percentage cover of both edible and inedible vegetation. The probability of both pademelon and wallaby scats decreased with increasing distance from windrows, but increased with increasing distance from forest at the plantation edge. Logistic regression indicated that at Dunalley, which had high food availability but no on‐site shelter, the probability of scats of both species increased with an increase in the percentage cover of edible vegetation. In relation to predation risk, however, the two species differed in their response. Pademelons exhibited a decrease in scat probability with increasing distance from the forest at the plantation edge, while wallabies showed an increase in scat probability with distance from the forest at the plantation edge. Results indicated some differences in antipredation strategies of the two species, which may be a function of differences in body size.  相似文献

In an enclosed group of tammar wallabies the behaviour of all individuals and the heart rate (HR) of three males were recorded simultaneously. The social structure was characterized by the dominance relationships between the males and the sexual preference of all males for the oldest female. During non-oestrus, dominance was obvious when a male intervened terminating the sexual behaviour of a subdominant one. The relatively low amount of agonistic behaviour between the males is assumed to be due to the clear dominance relationships. Locomotion as well as sexual and agonistic behaviour were accompanied by an acceleration of HR. The HR pattern depended on the intensity of the behaviour, its duration and the animal's identity. Commonly performed sexual behaviour and approach/retreat encounters gave rise to HR values not different from HR values during locomotor activity without interactive components. Social events that occurred infrequently—like fights, and the mating of an oestrous female—were accompanied by strong accelerations of HR indicating high cardiac effort. The mild cardiac activity during common social encounters is consistent with a strategy of maximizing energy conservation. HR patterns during specific behaviour could not entirely be accounted for by the energetic costs of activity. Spreading the forelimbs in response to specific stimuli—like the fly-over of raptors—was indicative of a strong HR response even if the animal was motionless. During specific social encounters like the sexual behaviour of the alpha-male following an intervention—HR responses revealed that arousal might exceed motor activity in affecting HR. Individual differences of these HR responses are attributed to the age, experience and social status of a male.  相似文献

Summary Relationships between basal and fed metabolic rates and whole-body protein turnover rates were examined in three species of wallabies, the red-necked pademelon (Thylogale thetis), parma wallaby (Macropus parma) and tammar wallaby (M. eugenii).There were no significant differences among wallaby species in basal metabolic rate (BMR) which was 30% below eutherian mammals. However, the fed metabolic rate of the tammar was lower than that of the other two species (P<0.05), as was the protein turnover rate (P<0.01) which is consistent with its lower voluntary feed intake and with its lower maintenance nitrogen requirement.Protein turnover rates in the wallabies were 23–47% lower than in eutherian mammals. Similarly, protein synthesis made a lower contribution to fed metabolic rates in the wallabies (7–8%) than in eutherians (17–25%).Thus, compared with several eutherian species, macropodid marsupials have low rates of both energy and protein metabolism, but within the macropodids there is not necessarily a close link between basal metabolic rate and whole-body protein turnover.Abbreviations BMR basal metabolic rate - DEE daily energy expenditure - EE energy expenditure - LSD least significant difference - RQ respiratory quotient  相似文献

Early development of Eimeria papillata (Apicomplexa) in the mouse was evaluated using Nomarski interference-contrast and brightfield microscopy. Sporozoite-shaped meronts, which were motile and contained a large posterior refractile body and a smaller anterior refractile body, were observed entering and leaving host cells in the jejunum of an experimentally infected mouse at 26 h post inoculation (HPI). However, early developmental stages were not observed in tissue of the duodenum, ileum, cecum and colon. The mean length and width of these meronts (n = 20) were 12.0 microns and 3.7 microns, respectively. Spherical or subspherical meronts containing crescent-shaped merozoites were observed at 36 HPI.  相似文献

Five new species of Eimeria are described from lizards. Eimeria baltrocki n. sp. was found in the berber skink, Eumeces schneideri, from Egypt. The oöcysts are cylindroidal, averaging 38 × 18.3 m, with a single thick oöcyst wall. Most oöcysts possess a single polar granule; a micropyle and oöcyst residuum are absent. The sporocysts are ellipsoidal and average 11.5 × 8.1 m, each with a large, globular sporocyst residuum; the Stieda body is absent. Eimeria anolidis n. sp. is described form the common anole, Anolis carolinensis, from Florida, USA. The oöcysts are cylindroidal and average 31 × 15.8 m with a thick, single-layered oöcyst wall. Two polar granules are usually present; a micropyle and oöcyst residuum absent. The sporocysts are ellipsoidal and average 9.4 × 7.5 m with a globular sporocyst residuum; the Stieda body is absent. Eimeria guyanensis n. sp is recorded in the ameiva, Ameiva ameiva, from Guyana, South America. The oöcysts are spherical to subspherical, average 19.0 × 17.8 m and possess a thick, single-layered oöcyst wall. Numerous polar granules are present (n > 5); a micropyle and oöcyst residuum are absent. The sporocysts are spherical to subspherical, average 7.5 × 7.8 m and possess a compact globular sporocyst residuum; the Stieda body is absent. Eimeria phelsumae n. sp. was recovered from the giant day gecko, Phelsuma madagascariensis grandis, from Madagascar, which harboured a simultaneous infection of E. brygooi. The oöcysts measured 32 × 15 m and are cylindroidal without polar granules, a micropyle or oöcyst residuum, or a Steida body. The sporocysts are ellipsoidal and average 9.8 × 7 m, with a loosely clumped, granular sporocyst residuum; the Steida body is absent. Eimeria leiocephali n. sp. was discovered in the faeces of the ornate ground iguana, Leiocephalus barahonensis, from Haiti. The oöcysts are spherical to subspherical, 21 × 19 m, and contain a number of polar granules (n > 5); a micropyle and oöcyst residuum are absent. The sporocysts are spherical, 8 m in diameter and lack a sporocyst residuum. Eimeria turcicus and E. lineri were found in faeces of Hemidactylus turcicus turcicus from the host's country of origin, Turkey.  相似文献

Monophyly of all 11 valid Eimeria species from rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus Linnaeus, 1758) was revealed based on nuclear 18S rDNA sequence data. This finding implies that these species, which vary considerably in terms of their morphology and biology, diversified on a single host or several closely related species. Phylogenetic analysis divided rabbit Eimeria species into 2 sister lineages, corresponding to the presence/absence of the oocyst residuum. Other morphological or biological traits (oocyst shape and size, presence/absence of oocyst inner structures, pathogenicity, infection site, pre-patent and patent periods, sporulation time, and number of asexual generations) do not explicitly correlate with the phylogeny of rabbit coccidia.  相似文献

The Javan ferret-badger Melogale orientalis (Carnivora: Mustelidae: Helictidinae) is a small carnivore endemic to Indonesia. In the family Mustelidae, 10 Eimeria, 12 Cystoisopora, one Isospora, and one Hammondia species are known, but no eimeriid coccidia has been yet described in the subfamily Helictinidae (ferret badgers). Coproscopic examination of Javan ferret-badgers imported into the Czech Republic revealed the presence of coccidian oocysts. Sporulated oocysts differ from other Eimeria known in the family Mustelidae by their small size (12.4–16.1 × 10.4–13.4 μm) and ovoidal shape. Morphological data and phylogenetic analyses of 18S rRNA and COI genes indicated a new species of Eimeria found in faecal samples of Javan ferret badgers. Progamotaenia capricorniensis sp. nov. (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) is described from the wallabies Macropus dorsalis (Gray, 1837) and Petrogale assimilis Ramsay, 1877 from Queensland, Australia. The new species is characterised by a fimbriated velum composed of 26-32 digitiform to triangular projections on each side of the proglottis, paired uteri and 140-190 testes distributed in a single band across the medulla. Minor variation occurs in the distribution of the testes. The above characters distinguish the new species from its most closely related congeners P. lagorchestis (Lewis, 1914), P. proterogyna (Fuhrmann, 1932), P. spearei Beveridge, 1980 and P. villosa (Lewis, 1914). P. capricorniensis appears to exhibit a highly disjunct distribution within its usual host, M. dorsalis.  相似文献
