The nitrogen and phosphorus content of two temperate fishes, Rutilus rutilus and Perca fluviatilis , and six tropical fishes, Oreochromis niloticus , Cichla monoculus , Serrassalmus rhombeus , Plagioscion squamosissimus , Prochilodus brevis and Hoplias malabaricus , were investigated to test the hypothesis that variation in body P content and N:P ratio is related to body size. Regressions of %P and N:P ratios against fish size (length and mass) confirmed the hypothesis for P. fluviatilis and P. squamosissimus , suggesting that body size is an important factor driving body P content and N:P ratios in some fishes. Moreover, significant increases in %N and N:P ratio with body size was found for H. malabaricus , a common piscivorous fish of the Neotropics. Interspecific variation in %P and N:P ranged two-fold and significant differences ( P < 0·05) were found among the tested species. The mean ± s . d . elemental content across all fishes ( n = 170) was 10·35 ± 1·29% for N and 3·05 ± 0·82% for P, while the N:P ratio was 8·00 ± 2·14. Data on fish body nutrient content and ratio will improve parameterization of bioenergetics and mass balance models and help clarify the role of fishes in nutrient cycles in both temperate and tropical freshwaters. 相似文献

The calorific value of the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus , varied with its size, sex and the season. Fish of 16 mg dry weight had a value of 1950 cal/g while for fish of 313 mg the value was 470 cal/g. The califoric value of gravid females was 23% above that of males of comparable size. The califoric value of a tropical cichlid, Tilapia nilotica , with a dry weight of 11 g was 4300 cal/g, the calorific values of the tissues ranged from 2500 cal/g for bone to 5190 cal/g for muscle. 相似文献

Geographical distribution of African freshwater fishes is discussed with emphasis on the effects of major continental features, hydrographic history, and Pleistocene climatic fluctuations. Differences in the modes of dispersal and biological interactions among various categories of fishes, ecological as well as phyletic, have also had marked effects on distribution.

We used metadata on nine reproductive traits of 67 species of Brazilian iteroparous, oviparous, teleost freshwater fishes
to test phenotypes associations to discriminate species that only spawn in large rivers (lotic fishes) from those capable
to spawn in lentic habitats (lentic fishes). We tested the hypothesis that lotic fishes present spawning migration, shorter
spawning season, single spawning, no parental care, free eggs, higher relative fecundity, faster embryogenesis, and larger
size, while lentic fishes present no spawning migration, longer spawning season, multiple spawning, parental care, adhesive
eggs, lower relative fecundity, slower embryogenesis, and smaller size. Our analyses supported the hypothesis but not all
phenotypic associations satisfied it, specifically with regard to lentic fishes or to pairs of phenotypes typical of lentic
fishes. We also concluded that spawning in large rivers is a better predictor of bionomic characters than spawning in lentic

Piscivorous predators can experience multi-fold differences in energy intake rates based solely on the types of fishes consumed. We estimated energy density of 1151 fish from 39 species by proximate analysis of lipid, water, ash-free lean dry matter, and ash contents and evaluated factors contributing to variation in composition. Lipid content was the primary determinant of energy density, ranging from 2 to 61% dry mass and resulting in a five-fold difference in energy density of individuals (2.0-10.8 kJg(-1) wet mass). Energy density varied widely within and between species. Schooling pelagic fishes had relatively high or low values, whereas nearshore demersal fishes were intermediate. Pelagic species maturing at a smaller size had higher and more variable energy density than pelagic or nearshore species maturing larger. High-lipid fishes had less water and more protein than low-lipid fishes. In some forage fishes, size, month, reproductive status, or location contributed significantly to intraspecific variation in energy density. Differences in quality are sufficient to potentially affect diet selection of breeding seabirds, especially when transporting food for their young to the nest site. 相似文献

Aim This paper examines the importance of regional processes in determining the patterns of distribution and diversity of lower Mesoamerican freshwater fishes. Location We focused our analyses on the lower Mesoamerican region, which we define to include all the rivers of Panama and Costa Rica. The geographic boundaries are the Colombian Choco to the south and Lake Nicaragua to the north. Methods We described the biogeographical provinces of lower Mesoamerica (LMA) using presence/absence data of primary and secondary LMA freshwater fishes. We conducted subsequent analyses at the spatial resolution of the biogeographical provinces and described patterns of community composition, species richness, endemism, range size, and the permeability of dispersal barriers between biogeographical provinces. Results This study represents the first attempt since that of W. A. Bussing in 1976 to investigate the biogeographical regions of Mesoamerica, and our analyses demonstrate increased regional complexity in biodiversity patterns relative to previous studies. Changes in community composition across LMA clearly highlight the importance of both extrinsic geological processes and intrinsic biological differences among freshwater fish species in shaping the dispersal and diversification histories of the LMA freshwater fish fauna. The influence of biology and geology is also exemplified by patterns of endemism and turnover between biogeographical provinces, which suggests that the relative importance of regional speciation and dispersal varies spatially across the LMA landscape. Finally, it would seem to follow that secondary freshwater fishes will have larger range sizes than primary fishes as a result of the increased salinity tolerance posited for the former group, and thus the increased probability of dispersal along coastlines. We did not, however, find a significant difference between the average range size of primary and secondary freshwater fishes, indicating that the putative differences in physiological tolerance to seawater between the two groups are not reflected in their distribution patterns at the scale of LMA. The geometric distribution of range size of LMA freshwater fishes suggests that dispersal of both primary and secondary freshwater fishes along coastlines must be infrequent. Main conclusion The observation that regional processes exerted a strong influence on the assembly and maintenance of LMA freshwater fish communities has important consequences for both theory and conservation. We suggest that large‐scale biogeographical analyses are required to illuminate the backdrop upon which local interactions play themselves out, supporting a top‐down approach to the study of biological diversity. Our results also identify areas of high conservation priority, providing a baseline for informing conservation strategies for freshwater fishes in LMA. We conclude by calling for conservation planning and action that acknowledges the importance that regional processes play in determining patterns of organismal diversity, and that incorporates these processes in strategies to conserve remnant biological diversity. 相似文献

Track analysis and Parsimony analysis of endemicity (PAE) were performed to analyze the distribution pattern of Costa Rican freshwater fishes. A basic matrix (presence/absence) was prepared using the distribution of 77 freshwater fish. The data were analyzed with CLIQUE software in order to find generalized tracks (cliques). Data also were analyzed with the software NONA and Winclada version 1.00.08 in order to perform the Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity (PAE). Fourteen equally probable cliques were found with 31 species in each and the intersection of the amount was selected as a generalized track dividing the country in two main zones: Atlantic slope from Matina to Lake Nicaragua and Pacific slope from the Coto River to the basin of the Tempisque River connected with some branches oriented to the central part of the country. PAE analysis found ten cladogram areas (72 steps, CI=0.45, RI=0.64), using the "strict consensus option" two grouping zones were identified: Atlantic slope and Pacific slope. Both PAE and Track Analysis show the division of the two slopes and the orientation of the generalized track suggests new biogeographical evidence on the influence of both old and new southern elements to explain the migrations of freshwater fish into Central America during two different geological events. 相似文献

Aim To investigate biogeographical patterns of the obligate freshwater fish order Characiformes. Location South America. Methods Parsimony analysis of endemicity, likelihood analysis of congruent geographical distribution, and partition Bremer support were used. Results Areas of endemism are deduced from parsimony analysis of endemicity, and putative dispersal routes from a separate analysis of discordant patterns of distribution. Main conclusions Our results demonstrate the occurrence of 11 major areas of endemism and support a preferential eastern–western differentiation of the characiforms in the Amazonian region, contrasting with the southern–northern differentiation of terrestrial organisms. The areas of endemism identified seem to be deeply influenced by the distribution of the emerged land during the 100‐m marine highstand that occurred during the late Miocene and allow us to hypothesize the existence of eight aquatic freshwater refuges at that time. The raw distribution of non‐endemic species supports nine patterns of species distribution across the 11 areas of endemism, two of which support a southern–northern differentiation in the eastern part of the Amazon. This result shows that the main channel of the Amazon limited dispersal between tributaries from each bank of the river. The levels of endemism further demonstrate that the aquatic freshwater refuges promoted allopatric speciation and later allowed the colonization of the lowlands. By contrast, the biogeographical pattern found in the western part of the Amazon is identified as a result of the Miocene Andean foreland dynamic and the uplift of the palaeoarches that promoted allopatric divergence across several sedimentary basins by the establishment of disconnected floodplains. The assessment of conflicting species distributions also shows the presence of seven putative dispersal routes between the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraná rivers. Our findings suggest that, rather than there being a single predominant process, the establishment of the modern South American freshwater fish biotas is the result of an interaction between marine incursions, uplift of the palaeoarches, and historical connections allowing cross‐drainage dispersal. 相似文献

The study of fish pheromones is particularly relevant because of the conserved nature of chemoreception in vertebrates. However, most fish pheromone systems remain unstudied. All the major known pheromones of freshwater fish and their associated behaviours were reviewed. Importantly, those studies that have demonstrated the connection between behaviour and pheromones in freshwater fishes have resulted in a wide range of applications in management. For example, pheromones released by the sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus have a practical function in pheromone traps, showing how chemical communication can be used in the management of invasive species. Future research on fish pheromones should include olfactory systems in a wider range of species testing the possibility that a few distinct models could be applied to the all fishes. Progress in research on fish pheromones should include a closer collaboration with other research fields such as evolutionary biology to allow a better understanding of fish pheromones systems divergence and mate selection where correlation between phenotypic dominance and pheromone production is still largely ignored. Finally, the example of pheromone interaction between an invasive species topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva and a native endangered species sunbleak Leucaspius delineatus is provided to illustrate the concept of pheromone pollution that assists its establishment in a novel ecosystem. 相似文献

This review examines the recent advances in our understanding of the mechanisms of ion transport and acid-base regulation in the freshwater fish gill. The application of a combination of morphological, immunocytochemical and biochemical techniques has yielded considerable insight into the field. An important mechanism for regulation of Cl- uptake/base excretion is by morphological modification of the gill epithelium. During acidosis, the chloride cell associated Cl-/HCO3- exchanger is effectively removed from the apical epithelium because of a covering by adjacent pavement cells; this mechanism reduces base excretion and contributes to the compensation of the acidosis. In addition, acidosis induces changes in both the surface structure and ultrastructure of pavement cells. Evidence is accumulating to support the hypothesis that Na+ uptake/H+ excretion is accomplished by the pavement cell. Further, specific localization of a V-type H+-ATPase on the pavement cell epithelium and an increased expression during acidosis provides support for the model originally proposed, that this exchange is accomplished by an electrochemically coupled H+-ATPase/Na+ channel mechanism. 相似文献

目前,群落功能多样性备受生态学界关注,被认为是能解决生态问题的一种重要途径。我国对于群落功能多样性主要集中在植物群落和微生物群落,而在鱼类群落方面的研究几乎是空白。我国鱼类资源正面临着严重威胁,包括水坝建设导致的鱼类通道受阻、水库形成造成鱼类产卵场功能消失、过度捕捞、水质恶化和富营养化加重、外来种入侵等因素,导致渔业资源急剧衰退,水生生态系统功能下降。以淡水鱼类群落为例,对鱼类功能多样性的数据获取及处理分析与评价、测定指标及计算方法与研究难点等进行综述,以期为鱼类资源保护提供新的理论依据和切入点。 相似文献
