Until now a stable long-lived electronanopore could be generated in a lipid membrane only under current-clamp conditions, and stochastic properties of a single nanopore have been studied by the chronopotentiometry. The current-clamp experiment introduces negative feedback, which could be responsible for the electropore fluctuations and observed 1/fB power spectrum. A new electroporation method, chronoamperometry after current clamp (CACC), prevents irreversible rupture of the membrane and eliminates the feedback by clamping the voltage after previous electroporation. The experiments show that the electropore size can also be stabilized under constant potential. The electropore fluctuations do not need feedback to appear. The fluctuations are self-similar with a short memory. CACC provides an effective tool for studying the natural dynamics of an electropore in various environments, which was tested with Na+ and Al3+ ions. Comparison between chronopotentiometry and CACC reveals that the feedback mainly shortens the memory of the stochastic fluctuations. Statistical analysis shows that the conductance fluctuations can be approximately modeled as a fractional Lévy stable motion for a small hydrophilic electropore, which tends to fractional Brownian motion when the electropore increases its size. A hypothesis is presented that this transition reflects a more regular shape of big nanopores.  相似文献

1. Ecologists are obtaining ever-increasing amounts of data concerning animal movement. A movement strategy that has been concluded for a broad variety of animals is that of Lévy flights, which are random walks whose step lengths come from probability distributions with heavy power-law tails. 2. The exponent that parameterizes the power-law tail, denoted micro, has repeatedly been found to be within the Lévy range of 1 < micro 相似文献

Lévy walks as a random search strategy have recently attracted a lot of attention, and have been described in many animal species. However, very little is known about one of the most important issues, namely how Lévy walks are generated by biological organisms. We study a model of the chemotaxis signaling pathway of E. coli, and demonstrate that stochastic fluctuations and the specific design of the signaling pathway in concert enable the generation of Lévy walks. We show that Lévy walks result from the superposition of an ensemble of exponential distributions, which occurs due to the shifts in the internal enzyme concentrations following the stochastic fluctuations. With our approach we derive the power-law analytically from a model of the chemotaxis signaling pathway, and obtain a power-law exponent μ ≈ 2.2, which coincides with experimental results. This work provides a means to confirm Lévy walks as natural phenomenon by providing understanding on the process through which they emerge. Furthermore, our results give novel insights into the design aspects of biological systems that are capable of translating additive noise on the microscopic scale into beneficial macroscopic behavior.  相似文献

A considerable amount of research has claimed that animals’ foraging behaviors display movement lengths with power-law distributed tails, characteristic of Lévy flights and Lévy walks. Though these claims have recently come into question, the proposal that many animals forage using Lévy processes nonetheless remains. A Lévy process does not consider when or where resources are encountered, and samples movement lengths independently of past experience. However, Lévy processes too have come into question based on the observation that in patchy resource environments resource-sensitive foraging strategies, like area-restricted search, perform better than Lévy flights yet can still generate heavy-tailed distributions of movement lengths. To investigate these questions further, we tracked humans as they searched for hidden resources in an open-field virtual environment, with either patchy or dispersed resource distributions. Supporting previous research, for both conditions logarithmic binning methods were consistent with Lévy flights and rank-frequency methods–comparing alternative distributions using maximum likelihood methods–showed the strongest support for bounded power-law distributions (truncated Lévy flights). However, goodness-of-fit tests found that even bounded power-law distributions only accurately characterized movement behavior for 4 (out of 32) participants. Moreover, paths in the patchy environment (but not the dispersed environment) showed a transition to intensive search following resource encounters, characteristic of area-restricted search. Transferring paths between environments revealed that paths generated in the patchy environment were adapted to that environment. Our results suggest that though power-law distributions do not accurately reflect human search, Lévy processes may still describe movement in dispersed environments, but not in patchy environments–where search was area-restricted. Furthermore, our results indicate that search strategies cannot be inferred without knowing how organisms respond to resources–as both patched and dispersed conditions led to similar Lévy-like movement distributions.  相似文献

1. Lévy flights are specialized random walks with fundamental properties such as superdiffusivity and scale invariance that have recently been applied in optimal foraging theory. Lévy flights have movement lengths chosen from a probability distribution with a power-law tail, which theoretically increases the chances of a forager encountering new prey patches and may represent an optimal solution for foraging across complex, natural habitats. 2. An increasing number of studies are detecting Lévy behaviour in diverse organisms such as microbes, insects, birds, and mammals including humans. A principal method for detecting Lévy flight is whether the exponent (micro) of the power-law distribution of movement lengths falls within the range 1 < micro < or = 3. The exponent can be determined from the histogram of frequency vs. movement (step) lengths, but different plotting methods have been used to derive the Lévy exponent across different studies. 3. Here we investigate using simulations how different plotting methods influence the micro-value and show that the power-law plotting method based on 2(k) (logarithmic) binning with normalization prior to log transformation of both axes yields low error (1.4%) in identifying Lévy flights. Furthermore, increasing sample size reduced variation about the recovered values of micro, for example by 83% as sample number increased from n = 50 up to 5000. 4. Simple log transformation of the axes of the histogram of frequency vs. step length underestimated micro by c.40%, whereas two other methods, 2(k) (logarithmic) binning without normalization and calculation of a cumulative distribution function for the data, both estimate the regression slope as 1-micro. Correction of the slope therefore yields an accurate Lévy exponent with estimation errors of 1.4 and 4.5%, respectively. 5. Empirical reanalysis of data in published studies indicates that simple log transformation results in significant errors in estimating micro, which in turn affects reliability of the biological interpretation. The potential for detecting Lévy flight motion when it is not present is minimized by the approach described. We also show that using a large number of steps in movement analysis such as this will also increase the accuracy with which optimal Lévy flight behaviour can be detected.  相似文献

A study is made of electromagnetic waves localized in the region where the radial plasma density profile has an extremum between two local Alfvén resonances. Analytic expressions for the eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes are obtained. It is shown that kinetic and inertial Alfvén waves can propagate in the vicinity of a maximum and a minimum in the density profile, respectively. Passage to the limiting case in which the plasma density is nonuniform and has a parabolic profile is considered.  相似文献

Summary A technique suitable for mapping ± stopping density distributions in patients or phantoms is described. As a position sensitive detector a multiwire proportional chamber with a slit or a hole collimator in front was applied. Results using a water and a Rando phantom are presented for various momenta and momentum band widths of the ± beam. To our knowledge the two-dimensional visualization of a stopping density distribution was realized for the first time.  相似文献

Forests play a major role in global carbon (C) cycle, and the carbon density (CD) could reflect its ecological function of C sequestration. Study on the CD of different forest types on a community scale is crucial to characterize in depth the capacity of forest C sequestration. In this study, based on the forest inventory data of 168 field plots in the study area (E 111°30′–113°50′, N 37°30′–39°40′), the forest vegetation was classified by using quantitative method (TWINSPAN); the living biomass of trees was estimated using the volume-derived method; the CD of different forest types was estimated from the biomass of their tree species; and the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on CD were studied using a multiple linear regression analysis. The results show that the forest vegetation in this region could be classified into 9 forest formations. The average CD of the 9 forest formations was 32.09 Mg ha−1 in 2000 and 33.86 Mg ha−1 in 2005. Form. Picea meyeri had the highest CD (56.48 Mg ha−1), and Form. Quercus liaotungensis Acer mono had the lowest CD (16.14 Mg ha−1). Pre-mature forests and mature forests were very important stages in C sequestration among four age classes in these formations. Forest densities, average age of forest stand, and elevation had positive relationships with forest CD, while slope location had negative correlation with forest CD.  相似文献

We present a simple construction method for Feller processes and a framework for the generation of sample paths of Feller processes. The construction is based on state space dependent mixing of Lévy processes. Brownian Motion is one of the most frequently used continuous time Markov processes in applications. In recent years also Lévy processes, of which Brownian Motion is a special case, have become increasingly popular. Lévy processes are spatially homogeneous, but empirical data often suggest the use of spatially inhomogeneous processes. Thus it seems necessary to go to the next level of generalization: Feller processes. These include Lévy processes and in particular brownian motion as special cases but allow spatial inhomogeneities. Many properties of Feller processes are known, but proving the very existence is, in general, very technical. Moreover, an applicable framework for the generation of sample paths of a Feller process was missing. We explain, with practitioners in mind, how to overcome both of these obstacles. In particular our simulation technique allows to apply Monte Carlo methods to Feller processes.  相似文献

α-L-Fucosidase (EC 3.2.1.51) activity was studied in different reproductive organs, seminal plasma and spermatozoa of the bull. The highest specific activity of α-L-fucosidase was found in the epididymis. Gel filtration at pH 7.0 revealed two α-L-fucosidases (α-L-fucosidase I and α-L-fucosidase II) in most reproductive tissues, but seminal plasma, spermatozoa and epididymal cauda contained only form I. Fractionation at basic pH (pH 8.5) resulted in the elution of α-L-fucosidase as form II. Some differences were encountered in pH profiles and thermal stabilities of the two enzyme forms and they showed additional polymorphism after chromatofocusing. The comparison of enzyme profiles after fractionations suggests that cauda epididymidis is the main source of the seminal plasma activity in the bull.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the dynamic properties of an SIRI epidemic model incorporating media coverage, and stochastically perturbed by a Lévy noise. We establish the existence of a unique global positive solution. We investigate the dynamic properties of the solution around both disease-free and endemic equilibria points of the deterministic model depending on the basic reproduction number under some noise excitation. Furthermore, we present some numerical simulations to support the theoretical results.  相似文献

Animal movements have been related to optimal foraging strategies where self-similar trajectories are central. Most of the experimental studies done so far have focused mainly on fitting statistical models to data in order to test for movement patterns described by power-laws. Here we show by analyzing over half a million movement displacements that isolated termite workers actually exhibit a range of very interesting dynamical properties –including Lévy flights– in their exploratory behaviour. Going beyond the current trend of statistical model fitting alone, our study analyses anomalous diffusion and structure functions to estimate values of the scaling exponents describing displacement statistics. We evince the fractal nature of the movement patterns and show how the scaling exponents describing termite space exploration intriguingly comply with mathematical relations found in the physics of transport phenomena. By doing this, we rescue a rich variety of physical and biological phenomenology that can be potentially important and meaningful for the study of complex animal behavior and, in particular, for the study of how patterns of exploratory behaviour of individual social insects may impact not only their feeding demands but also nestmate encounter patterns and, hence, their dynamics at the social scale.  相似文献

One of the most important problems to be studied in the gas-dynamic trap (GDT) facility is the investigation of MHD stability and cross-field transport in a plasma with a relatively high value of β = πp/B 2. Recent experiments demonstrated that the radial electric field produced in the plasma by using radial limiters and coaxial end plasma collectors improves plasma stability in axisymmetric magnetic mirror systems without applying special MHD stabilizers. The experimental data presented in this work show that stable plasma confinement can be achieved by producing a radial potential drop across a narrow region near the plasma boundary. Creating radial electric fields of strength 15–40 V/cm causes a shear plasma flow, thereby substantially increasing the plasma confinement time. When all the radial electrodes were grounded, the confinement was unstable and the plasma confinement time was much shorter than the characteristic time of plasma outflow through the magnetic mirrors. Measurements of cross-field plasma fluxes with the use of a specially designed combined probe show that, in confinement modes with differential plasma rotation, transverse particle losses are negligibly small as compared to longitudinal ones and thus can be ignored. It is also shown that, when the GDT plasma is in electric contact with the radial limiters and end collectors, the growth rate of interchange instability decreases considerably; such a contact, however, does not ensure complete MHD stability when the electrodes are at the same potential.  相似文献

The cabbage butterfly, Pieris melete is multivoltine with a pupal summer and winter diapause. Summer and winter diapause are induced principally by relatively long and short daylengths, respectively. The intermediate to relatively short daylengths of autumn permitted some pupae to develop without diapause in the field. A short daylength had a stronger diapause inducing effect than a relatively long one under higher temperatures. The principal sensitive phase for photoperiodic response occurred before the late 3rd larval instar. The critical daylength for wild autumnal populations was between 12h 30min and 12h 40min at an average temperature of 20.5 degrees C. A night interruption by 2h of light averted diapause most effectively when it was placed 10 to 12h after lights-off. High temperatures and long days during summer inhibited the incidence of diapause, suggesting that the occurrence of summer diapause is due to the specific climatic conditions occurring in April and early May, rather than to the high temperatures in summer. This indicates that the butterfly has a cryptic ability to reproduce in summer. High temperatures delayed diapause development, whereas low temperatures enhanced it, indicating that the optimum temperature of diapause development is lower. The diapause regulating mechanisms thus ensure that the species synchronises its development and reproduction with the growth seasons of the host plants and provide the species with a high degree of flexibility in its life cycle.  相似文献

We studied the life-history of the Sierra Madre sparrow (Xenospiza baileyi) in a subalpine grassland-agriculture mosaic south of Mexico City. From March to early September 1999 we captured and color-banded 53 adults with mist-nets and mapped the breeding territories of 21 males. We again mapped territories in the same spot in April and May 2000. The number of breeding territories was found to be the same in the two consecutive years and interannual survivorship was found to be relatively high. Breeding territories were restricted to the bunchgrass-covered areas. We used the density of territories and the amount of remaining habitat to estimate a total population size of 5,380–6,150 adults for this species. Using this and other recent data, we recommend raising the Sierra Madre sparrow to the status of critically endangered using BirdLife International criteria.  相似文献

Animals adapt their movement patterns to their environment in order to maximize their efficiency when searching for food. The Lévy walk and the Brownian walk are two types of random movement found in different species. Studies have shown that these random movements can switch from a Brownian to a Lévy walk according to the size distribution of food patches. However no study to date has analysed how characteristics such as sex, age, dominance or body mass affect the movement patterns of an individual. In this study we used the maximum likelihood method to examine the nature of the distribution of step lengths and waiting times and assessed how these distributions are influenced by the age and the sex of group members in a semi free-ranging group of ten Tonkean macaques. Individuals highly differed in their activity budget and in their movement patterns. We found an effect of age and sex of individuals on the power distribution of their step lengths and of their waiting times. The males and old individuals displayed a higher proportion of longer trajectories than females and young ones. As regards waiting times, females and old individuals displayed higher rates of long stationary periods than males and young individuals. These movement patterns resembling random walks can probably be explained by the animals moving from one location to other known locations. The power distribution of step lengths might be due to a power distribution of food patches in the enclosure while the power distribution of waiting times might be due to the power distribution of the patch sizes.  相似文献

Ethylene production or content was compared to leaflet abscission in detached, compound leaves of Mèlia azédarach L. In late autumn, when abscission was progressing from basal leaves upward, the oldest leaves both produced ethylene at the highest rates and abscised their leaflets first. When C2H4 levels were measured in intercellular air removed immediately after leaves were harvested, C2H4 levels were also highest in basal leaves and declined progressively in more apical leaves. Levels as high as 1.8 microliters C2H4 liter−1 air were observed. Earlier in the season groups of leaves demonstrated a pattern of sequential initiation of abscission from base to apex, but the peak rates of C2H4 production followed an opposite trend, being highest in the youngest leaves. Peak rates of C2H4 production occurred after the initiation of leaflet abscission and presumably are related to either the auxin content or a climacteric-like, autocatalytic phase of C2H4 production not directly involved in the initiation of abscission. In these experiments, the early abscission of the older leaflets reflects their greater sensitivity to C2H4, presumably due to lower auxin content. C2H4 production rates in all experiments, with rare exceptions, exceeded 3 microliters per kilogram fresh weight per hour at least 24 hours before leaflet abscission reached 10%. This achieving of a threshold internal C2H4 level is viewed as an initiating event in leaflet abscission. Hypobaric conditions, to facilitate the escape of endogenous C2H4, delayed abscission compared to controls, and termination of hypobaric exposure allowed a normal progression of abscission as well as normal C2H4 synthesis rates. All of the data indicate that C2H4 initiates leaflet abscission in intact but detached leaves of Mèlia azédarach L. The seasonal patterns observed suggest that C2H4, in concert with those hormones which govern sensitivity to C2H4, regulate autumn leaf fall in this species.  相似文献
