Thyroxine-treated flukes showed increased tetrazolium reductase and cytochrome oxidase activities in histochemical preparations. Single male, single female, and pairs of S. douthitti, as well as cercariae of this species, consumed more oxygen when treated with thyroxine than did controls. The same effect was observed in all other invertebrates examined (Haematoloechus sp., Dugesia sp., Tetrahymena pyriformis, and an unidentified strigeoid species of cercaria).Both male and female schistosomes from hyperthyroid hosts are significantly larger than flukes from normal mice (P < 0.025). This condition prevailed whether the hyperthyroid state was established prior to cercarial penetration or after schistosomular migration through the lungs. S. douthitti adults from surgically thyroidectomized rats were significantly smaller than flukes from sham-operated sibling controls (P < 0.01). An accelerated death rate was also observed in hyperthyroid mice infected with S. douthitti.Female schistosomes from unisexual infections were significantly smaller (P < 0.1) than those from bisexual infections, confirming Short's (1952) report. 相似文献

Argentophilic papillae of cercariae of Schistosomatium douthitti were studied by light microscopy. The basic number of body papillae was 56, excluding 20 at the anterior tip. The average number of tail papillae was 18. Average locations and spatial ranges of body papillae indicate a rather constant pattern. Tail papillae showed greater variability in location. Twenty papillae (10 on each side) at the anterior tip of cercariae were associated with gland duct openings. Two types of papillae were recognized with light microscopy--uniciliated bulbs and pits. The papilla pattern of S. douthitti differs from those of other species of schistosomes derived to date, and its constancy supports the usefulness of papillae in systematic studies. 相似文献

Laboratory-reared Lymnaea catascopium snails (1–269 days old) were exposed individually to different numbers of Schistosomatium douthitti miracidia. Increasing the exposure dosage from 3 to 10 miracidia generally increased infection rates, in some age classes up to 100%. Successful re-exposure of snails not infected after a primary exposure was possible. Neonatal snails were least likely to become infected, primarily because miracidia were not attracted to them. Snails 12–55 days old were most susceptible to infection. Miracidia were readily attracted to these snails, and many were ingested and subsequently penetrated the host esophageal wall. Miracidial penetration of external snail surfaces was rare. Susceptibility of older snails (65–269 days) progressively declined with age. Many miracidia were entangled and immobilized in mucus produced by these snails, and fewer were ingested. No conspicuous host cellular responses to mother sporocysts were observed in any of the snails sectioned. A comparison of susceptibility of deliberately stunted snails and comparably aged controls of normal size indicated that the former were more susceptible. 相似文献

The pathophysiological changes that occur in mice experimentally infected with Schistosomatium douthitti were studied. Male ICR mice, 6-8 weeks in age, were exposed to 100 cercariae of S. douthitti from infected snails (Lymnaea catascopium) and sacrificed weekly for a total of 13 weeks. Liver homogenates, serum samples, and histological sections of liver tissue were examined. Results showed that body weights of animals with prepatent infections were higher than those of corresponding controls. After patency, which occurred at 5 weeks, body weights were lower and liver weights were higher resulting in significantly increased liver weight/body weight ratios. Hematocrit values declined progressively in patent infections. Total cholesterol in liver was generally higher in the parasitized groups reaching significance during patency. Values rose with age in both control and parasitized groups, but sooner in the latter. Free cholesterol was increased in the liver of animals with patent infections. Total lipid content of the liver was reduced in the infected animals throughout the study. Both liver glycogen and serum glucose levels in the infected animals rose over the control values. The activity of alkaline phosphatase (E.C.3.1.3.1) was elevated in liver tissue of infected mice. Glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (E.C.2.6.1.2) activity was higher in serum but lower in the livers of animals harboring patent infections. Total bile salt concentration in parasitized animals did not differ appreciably from control values; however, gallbladders were enlarged five times in the infected animals. Histologically, liver sections from infected mice showed granulomas in various stages of formation and degeneration. Granulomas contained from 1 to 40 schistosome eggs. After 6 weeks of infection, granulomas were characterized by many neutrophils and monocytes. Few lymphocytes and eosinophils were present. As the granulomas developed, fibroblasts and connective tissue became more prominent. Glycogen deposits were observed surrounding granulomas and were increased in older infections. In a four-tube vertical system, Echinostoma caproni miracidia exhibited a strong negative geotaxis which was dominated by a positive phototaxis. In horizontal chambers a positive phototactic response was also demonstrated. These miracidia showed a positive chemoresponse, as determined in phi-chambers, to glutamic and aspartic acids but not leucine. Positive responses were also elicited to snail-conditioned water and sulfuric and acetic acids. Ammonia, Mg2+, and HCl produced no significant reactions. Responses of E. caproni and Schistosoma mansoni miracidia, both of which develop in Biomphalaria glabrata snails, were similar providing further evidence that miracidia mimic the behavioral patterns of compatible snail species. 相似文献

The first intermediate host is the planorbid snail Helisoma trivolvis. Second intermediate hosts are various pulmonate and prosobranch snails, mussels, planarians, fishes, frogs, tadpoles and freshwater turtles. Final hosts are various birds and mammals. Irradiation of Schistosomatium douthitti miracidia (4000, 5000, or 6000 rad) did not substantially alter their behavior or ability to penetrate their snail host. Treatment with 4000 rad was not sufficient to prevent all miracidia from establishing patent infections in Lymnaea catascopium, although significantly fewer snails exposed to these miracidia shed cercariae than did controls exposed to normal miracidia. Irradiation of miracidia with either 5000 or 6000 rad totally prevented cercarial production. Although destruction of irradiated mother sporocysts by encapsulating amebocytes was occasionally observed, most expanded without concomitant multiplication of germinal cells and embryo production and then collapsed. They generally persisted in this state throughout the period of observation (32 days). Snails sensitized by exposure to irradiated miracidia and challenged 2 or 10 days later with normal miracidia were as likely to develop patent infections as were snails exposed only to normal miracidia. Double sensitization of snails with irradiated miracidia also failed to confer protection upon challenge with normal miracidia. Most challenge sporocysts developed normally, often in close proximity to collapsed irradiated sporocysts. 相似文献
