Binaural interaction (BI) components in brain-stem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) and their changes with stimulus intensity and repetition rate were examined in human adult. Seven BI components were identified, which occurred between the latency range of 5 and 11 ms and coincided consistently with the latency range of BAEP waves IV–VII. Waves DV and DVII, occurring at the downslopes of BAEP-waves V and VII, respectively, were the two most prominent and reproducible BI components. Wave DVII existed consistently at high, moderate and, in most cases, low stimulus intensities, suggesting that this component is neurogenic although acoustic cross-talk may account for a part of its waveform at high stimulus intensities. The latencies of all BI components increased as a function of decreasing stimulus intensity, while the interpeak intervals, especially DV–DVII, were essentially constant at different intensity levels. The amplitudes of BI components decreased slightly with decreasing intensity. As click repetition rate increased, BI wave latencies and interpeak intervals increased slightly and amplitudes decreased slightly. When repetition rate increased to above 20/s, BI components became poorly differentiated. Lower repetition rates, e.g. 10/s, are therefore preferred for routine derivation of the BI. The changes in the latency and amplitude of BI components with stimulus intensity and repetition rate were associated or concomitant with those of the corresponding BAEP components in monaural and binaural potentials. In view of the concomitant relationship between BI and BAEP latency, we designate BI components in association with the corresponding BAEP components.  相似文献

One of the great challenges for evolutionary psychology has been to explain within-sex individual variation in mating behaviour. Several lines of evidence suggest that some of this variation stems from an adaptation for facultatively increasing or decreasing long- and short-term mating inclinations in response to circumstances. It remains unclear, however, how rapidly such changes can occur, and what stimuli might initiate them. This paper presents three experiments that investigate mating strategy change following exposure to the evolutionarily-relevant stimuli of parental care, resource-abundance, and danger. In each experiment, participants indicated their preferred relationship type (long-term, short-term, or none) for each of fifty other-sex individuals, both before and after priming. Relative to a control group, relationship preferences changed in all three experiments, in directions generally consistent with evolutionary psychological predictions. Moreover, short- and long-term relationship preferences were found to shift independently, such that a change in long-term preference was not accompanied by an opposite change in short-term, or vice versa. Together, these experiments represent the first direct test of the claim that brief interventions can shift the relative strength of people's preferences for long-term and short-term relationships.  相似文献

In olfaction, there is only weak evidence of repetition priming. Repetition priming was therefore investigated in two experiments using birhinal presentation of odors at study and monorhinal at test. Experiment 1 demonstrated repetition priming for repeated judgements of edibility in terms of response latency, but not in terms of correctness. No differences were found between the hemispheres (nostrils). Experiment 2 utilized a slightly different design, in which identity of odors was studied and judgement of edibility was tested. This time, only the right hemisphere (RH) was associated with priming. This persistence of RH priming should be seen in the light of a general tendency for superiority of the left hemisphere for correctly judging edibility. It is concluded that the olfactory system benefits from previous exposure/processing just as do vision, audition and touch. In line with previous research in vision, it is suggested that RH priming may be more associated with perceptual priming and left-hemisphere (LH) priming with conceptual priming.  相似文献

Our purpose in these experiments was to study short-term (immediate) and long-term memory in the memorization of the same subject matter. By memory capacity is meant the number of units a person is able to reproduce in one repetition, or on an average in one repetition. In short-term reception and full reproduction of the material to be memorized, short-term memory capacity is commensurate with the number of units reproduced. Long-term memory capacity reflects the ability to accumulate as well as to retain information. When the material to be remembered exceeds the short-term memory capacity, the first reproduction is incomplete, and multiple presentation and repetition of the information are necessary for error-free and complete reproduction. In this case the memory capacity is equal to the number of units contained in the presented material divided by the number of repetitions.  相似文献

We present a prototype of a recently proposed two stage model of the entorhinal-hippocampal loop. Our aim is to form a general computational model of the sensory neocortex. The model--grounded on pure information theoretic principles--accounts for the most characteristic features of long-term memory (LTM), performs bottom-up novelty detection, and supports noise filtering. Noise filtering can also serve to correct the temporal ordering of information processing. Surprisingly, as we examine the temporal characteristics of the model, the emergent dynamics can be interpreted as perceptual priming, a fundamental type of implicit memory. In the model's framework, computational results support the hypothesis of a strong correlation between perceptual priming and repetition suppression and this correlation is a direct consequence of the temporal ordering in forming the LTM. We also argue that our prototype offers a relatively simple and coherent explanation of priming and its relation to a general model of information processing by the brain.  相似文献

Prior semantic processing can enhance subsequent picture naming performance, yet the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying this effect and its longevity are unknown. This functional magnetic resonance imaging study examined whether different neurological mechanisms underlie short-term (within minutes) and long-term (within days) facilitation effects from a semantic task in healthy older adults. Both short- and long-term facilitated items were named significantly faster than unfacilitated items, with short-term items significantly faster than long-term items. Region of interest results identified decreased activity for long-term facilitated items compared to unfacilitated and short-term facilitated items in the mid-portion of the middle temporal gyrus, indicating lexical-semantic priming. Additionally, in the whole brain results, increased activity for short-term facilitated items was identified in regions previously linked to episodic memory and object recognition, including the right lingual gyrus (extending to the precuneus region) and the left inferior occipital gyrus (extending to the left fusiform region). These findings suggest that distinct neurocognitive mechanisms underlie short- and long-term facilitation of picture naming by a semantic task, with long-term effects driven by lexical-semantic priming and short-term effects by episodic memory and visual object recognition mechanisms.  相似文献

Multicellular eukaryotes have evolved complex homeostatic mechanisms that buffer the majority of their cells from direct interaction with the external environment. Thus, in these organisms long-term adaptations are generally achieved by modulating the developmental profile and tissue specificity of gene expression. Nevertheless, a subset of eukaryotic genes are still involved in direct responses to environmental fluctuations. It is the adaptative responses in the expression of these genes that buffers many other genes from direct environmental effects. Both microevolutionary and macroevolutionary patterns of change in the structure and regulation of such genes are illustrated by the sequences encoding alpha-amylases. The molecular biology and evolution of alpha-amylases in Drosophila and other higher eukaryotes are presented. The amylase system illustrates the effects of both long-term and short-term natural selection, acting on both the structural and regulatory components of a gene--enzyme system. This system offers an opportunity for linking evolutionary genetics to molecular biology, and it allows us to explore the relationship between short-term microevolutionary changes and long-term adaptations.  相似文献

Synaptic neurotransmitter release is restricted to active zones, where the processes of synaptic vesicle tethering, priming to fusion competence, and Ca2+-triggered fusion are taking place in a highly coordinated manner. We show that the active zone components Munc13-1, an essential vesicle priming protein, and RIM1, a Rab3 effector with a putative role in vesicle tethering, interact functionally. Disruption of this interaction causes a loss of fusion-competent synaptic vesicles, creating a phenocopy of Munc13-1-deficient neurons. RIM1 binding and vesicle priming are mediated by two distinct structural modules of Munc13-1. The Munc13-1/RIM1 interaction may create a functional link between synaptic vesicle tethering and priming, or it may regulate the priming reaction itself, thereby determining the number of fusion-competent vesicles.  相似文献

Using seed priming and accelerated ageing techniques, a singlelot of leek (Allium porrum) seeds was manipulated to producefour lots of seeds with different germination performance. Changesin content of the major nucleic acid species in whole seedsand embryos of two of these lots (primed and unprimed), weredetermined over the early stages of germination. The major effectof priming was an increased level of RNA species in the seedsand embryos, and this difference was maintained during germination.Comparison of nucleic acid levels in the dry seeds of thesetwo lots and two others (aged and aged then primed) indicatedthat there was no correlation with germination performance.Similar comparisons of the nucleic acid levels in the embryosof seeds imbibed for 1 d showed only a limited correlation betweenrRNA levels and germination performance. Analysis of these datasuggests that accelerated ageing has an adverse effect uponendosperm cells, which results in the degradation of their nucleicacids during priming. Furthermore, the viability of these agedseeds also falls during priming. The data also indicate thatratios of rRNA to DNA correlate with germination performanceof the four lots of seeds studied. It is proposed that sucha relationship is indicative of the efficiency of a primingtreatment, and may be useful in comparisons of naturally varyingseed lots. The study provides a test and evaluation of a new repetition priming procedure designed to solve problems in investigating olfactory-specific priming. Although the results did not reveal any overall priming effect, a post-hoc analysis showed that incorrectly identified odors were more quickly processed than control odors, whereas correctly identified odors were processed more slowly These results are discussed and interpreted as instances of positive and negative repetition priming respectively.  相似文献

Periodic induction of focal electrical seizure [afterdischarge (AD)] is an absolute prerequisite for the development of kindling, an animal model of complex partial epilepsy. Once established, it is a permanent condition. The mechanism(s) that translate ADs, which last tens of seconds, into life-long alterations in the CNS is unclear. Cellular immediate-early genes have been implicated in the conversion of short-term stimuli to long-term alterations in cellular phenotypes by regulating target gene expression. We have investigated the contribution of one such early gene, c-fos, to this process. The relationship between ADs and expression of c-fos gene in the rat hippocampus, a key structure in kindling development, was studied by analysis of mRNA levels. The low constitutive expression of c-fos mRNA in the hippocampus was not altered by kindling. There was an "all-or-none" relationship between induction of c-fos and the duration of AD. The threshold for induction was approximately 30 s of AD. Above-threshold ADs induced c-fos in both naive and kindled animals to the same extent and with identical temporal profiles. Although the expression of c-fos is unchanged with kindling, c-fos may nonetheless contribute to many long-term changes of kindling, both adaptive and epileptogenic.  相似文献

The hypocretins (orexins) are recently discovered neuropeptides initially associated with feeding behavior and sleep regulation. However, the normal function of these peptides is unclear and a number of studies have reported a role in energy homeostasis and locomotor activity. Exercise (or physical activity) is the most powerful way of challenging the internal homeostatic process. This study examines the circadian differences in response to forced activity and homeostatic challenges on hypocretin-1 (Hcrt-1) levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of rats. Hcrt-1 levels were decreased after long-term immobilization at the end of active phase (zeigeber time-0, ZT-0) and increased after short-term forced swimming in the rest phase (ZT-8). Nevertheless, no effects were observed after short-term immobilization, total sleep deprivation or cold exposure. We concluded that despite the relation between hypocretins, stress and sleep regulation reported in the literature, short-term total sleep deprivation, immobilization and cold exposure did not induce increases in CSF Hcrt-1 levels at ZT-0 and ZT-8. On the other hand, the relationship between hypocretinergic system activation and motor activation is reinforced by decrease in Hcr-1 levels after long-term immobilization at ZT-0 and its increased levels after short-term forced swimming at ZT-8 in CSF of rats.  相似文献

This study investigated differences in olfactory cognitive functions, in 40 healthy young right-handed participants, with respect to side of rhinal stimulation. The targeted functions were: perceived familiarity, episodic recognition memory, free identification and repetition priming in identification. The results showed that odors presented to the right nostril were rated as more familiar than odors presented to the left nostril and also showed significant effects of repetition priming in identification. However, no differences were found between nostrils in episodic recognition memory or free identification. These latter results indicate a rather extensive inter-hemispheric interaction in higher-order cognitive functions.  相似文献

Hypophysial portal blood and peripheral blood were obtained from conscious, unrestrained rams to measure simultaneously the secretion of LHRH and LH in entire rams and rams which had been castrated for 2-15 days (short-term castration) and for 1-6 months (long-term castration). The apparatus for portal blood collection was surgically implanted using a transnasal trans-sphenoidal approach and, 4-5 days later, portal blood and peripheral blood were collected simultaneously at 10-min intervals for 8-9 h from 15 sheep. LHRH was clearly secreted in pulses in all three physiological conditions, but there were marked differences in pulse frequencies, which averaged 1 pulse/2-4 h in entire rams, 1 pulse/70 min in short-term castrated rams and 1 pulse/36 min in long-term castrated rams. In entire and short-term castrated animals, LH profiles were also clearly pulsatile and each LHRH pulse in hypophysial portal blood was associated with an LH pulse in the peripheral blood. In long-term castrated animals, LH pulses were not as well defined, because of the high basal levels and small pulse amplitudes, and the temporal relationship between LHRH and LH pulses was not always clear. These results demonstrate the pulsatile nature of LHRH secretion under the three physiological conditions and suggest that the irregular LH profiles characteristic of long-term castrates are due to an inability of the pituitary gland to transduce accurately the hypothalamic signal. The very high frequency of the LHRH pulses may be one of the major reasons for this, and is probably also responsible for the high rate of LH secretion in the long-term castrated animal.  相似文献

The impact of cytolytic versus noncytolytic viral infections on host responses is not well understood, due to limitations of the systems that have been used to address this issue. Using paired cytopathic and noncytopathic rabies viruses that differ by only two amino acids, we investigated several fundamental aspects of the immune response to these viral vectors. Greater cytopathic capacity translated into a greater degree of cross-priming to CD8(+) T cells (T(CD8)(+)) and more-robust short-term humoral and cellular responses. However, long-term responses to the two viruses were similar, suggesting that direct priming drives the bulk of the T(CD8)(+) antirabies response and that enhanced acute responses associated with greater virally mediated cellular destruction were balanced by other factors, such as prolonged antigen expression associated with noncytopathic virus. Such compensatory mechanisms may be in place to ensure comparable immunologic memories to various pathogens.  相似文献

Short-term visual memory, as in both implicit priming and explicit recognition tasks, can be demonstrated by decreased reaction times, the ability to preferentially select previously presented objects from lists and the ability to more readily complete previously exposed words from fragmented letters. The visual processing of faces occurs separately from the visual processing of non-face stimuli, within discrete areas of bilateral posterior inferotemporal cortices. While visual recognition and memory of faces are independent of those for non-faces, their processing appears to be similar. We have demonstrated an electrophysiologic correlate of short-term visual memory in a face-matching paradigm. We have observed a series of evoked potential components consisting predominantly of a C140, C180 and C240 with a posterior, bitemporal distribution. The priming effect is reflected by a diminution of C240 amplitude in the response to repeated pictures of faces compared to novel pictures of faces. These data reflect a previously unreported set of neurophysiological observations on short-term visual memory for faces.  相似文献

The relationship between the vibration dance and foraging was investigated for the honey bee, Apis mellifera. Foraging-age workers responded to the vibration dance by moving into the area of the hive where waggle dances were concentrated and by increasing their rate of movement throughout the colony. Vibrated non-foraging-age bees did not move into the waggle dance region or exhibit increased movement in the hive. Small peaks of vibration dance activity, which tended to coincide temporally with small peaks of foraging activity, occurred with a similar frequency throughout the year. These small vibration peaks may have adjusted foraging to short-term fluctuations in food availability. In spring and summer all study hives exhibited large, morning peaks of vibration dance activity, which preceded foraging. Since there was a significant, positive slope for the regression of the magnitude of these morning vibration peaks on the mean level of waggle dancing occurring later during the same day, morning vibration activity may have exerted a long-term ‘priming’ influence on foraging behaviour. In fall and winter, compared with spring and summer, morning vibration dance peaks were smaller, less frequent and tended to coincide with, rather than to precede, foraging activity.  相似文献

土壤激发效应是指由各种有机物质添加等处理所引起的土壤有机质周转强烈的短期改变。根际是激发效应最主要也是最重要的发生部位。根际激发效应能够反映生态系统土壤碳氮周转的速度,并影响植物、土壤微生物等对养分的获取和竞争,维持生态系统各组分间的养分平衡。虽然对根际激发效应的产生机制已取得一定程度的认知,但是对根际激发效应在土壤碳氮转化过程中的作用机理及其生态重要性依然缺乏足够的理解。该文在论述激发效应的研究历史和主要发生部位的基础上对最新研究进展进行了综合分析,提出了一个具体的根际激发效应的发生机制,深入剖析了影响根际激发效应的生物与非生物因素,并阐释了根际激发效应的生态重要性,对未来根际激发效应的研究方向进行了展望。  相似文献

A long-term romantic relationship can offer many benefits to committed individuals. Thus, humans possess relationship maintenance mechanisms to protect against threats from those who serve as attractive alternatives or intrasexual rivals. Many studies have indicated that romantic love can act as a commitment device to activate these mechanisms. To examine the attentional bias associated with relationship maintenance among 108 college students (49 single and 59 committed females) in China, we used a semantic priming procedure to activate mental representations associated with romantic love and then asked participants to complete a dot-probe task for the purpose of making a distinction between the engage and disengage components of attention. No significant engaging effects toward attractive faces were observed among committed females, but the following significant disengaging effects were found: when primed with romantic love, single females showed increased attention toward and difficulty in disengaging from attractive male faces, whereas females already in a committed relationship did not alter their attention, remaining as inattentive to attractive alternatives as they were in the baseline condition. In addition, committed females responded to love priming by exhibiting difficulty in disengaging from attractive rivals. The present findings provide evidence in the Chinese cultural context for the existence of early-stage attentional processes in the domain of relationship maintenance that committed Chinese females protected an ongoing relationship by not only being inattentive to attractive males who could serve as attractive alternatives, but also being more attentive to attractive females who could be potential rivals when mental representations associated with romantic love were primed.  相似文献
