Field experiments were done at two widely separated sites in England (Tadcaster, North Yorkshire and North Wyke, Devon). In each case an old permanent sward was re-seeded after ploughing or by direct drilling, or was left intact and fertilised. The carbamate pesticide aldicarb was applied to half of each experimental plot. The effects of sward improvement and pesticide on various soil invertebrate groups were assessed. Soil-dwelling macrofauna arthropods were scarce at both sites. Stem-boring dipterous larvae, however, were numerous at both sites. At Tadcaster, Oscinella vastator was the only species present in the original sward, but 0. frit was by far the most prevalent species in re-seeded areas. These can only have arisen from direct oviposition of eggs by adults on or near the emerging seedlings and not by migration of larvae from buried turf or the desiccated old pasture.
Mites and Collembola were abundant. Their numbers were reduced initially by cultivation and pesticide usage, but the effects of these practices were transient and their numbers recovered to previous levels usually within 10 wk.
Earthworms were present at both sites. Deep burrowing species, e.g. Lumbricus terrestris and Allolobophora longa were less affected by the treatments imposed than species such as A. chlorotica and L. rubelius which usually live close to the soil surface. Effects on their numbers were in any case, short-lived.
No improvement method consistently provided the greatest herbage dry matter yield. Pesticide application, however, greatly increased seedling stand and/or herbage yield at both sites and showed the benefits of using crop protectants, especially on direct-drilled re-seeds. 相似文献

Pesticide applications made at the time of sowing significantly improved seedling stand and/or herbage dry matter yield at 20 of 45 sites studied during 1977-79 in England and Wales. More autumn-sown swards responded to pesticide treatment than spring-sown ones and re-seeded grass was attacked more often than grass sown after arable crops. Pest damage was seldom obvious although some noticeable attacks by frit fly occurred. Slugs and leatherjackets appeared to be unimportant. The effect of nematodes was unresolved. 相似文献

In four experiments from 1981 to 1983 August-sown perennial (Lolium perenne) and Italian (L. multiflorum) ryegrass were exposed to frit fly attack by oviposition on the seedlings. Responses to pesticide treatment were detected at autumn harvests. Even at low sowing rates pesticide application did not ultimately establish a better sward and, owing to a tendency towards spring reversal of autumn yield responses, even temporary returns were negligible. As frit fly numbers were unusually low the autumn response to pesticide was sufficient to suggest that frit fly is always likely to be an influential factor in ryegrass sown in early August in this area. Later sowings are less likely to be affected. The yield response was related to the numbers of adult flies present 2–7 wk after sowing. Neither grass species was consistently more affected than the other. Additional seed (compared with a sowing rate below normal commercial rates) and the inclusion of fertiliser at sowing also gave only small temporary returns and failed to establish a better sward. It is suggested that routine protection against frit fly attack is of at least equal value to the other two variables in an early August sowing. 相似文献

Annual activity patterns of anurans in a seasonal neotropical environment 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Summary At Panguana, a study in the upper Amazon basin, 7 different aquatic breeding sites of anurans were investigated from Nov. 1, 1981 to Oct. 31, 1982. Rainfall in this area is seasonal. Only 20% of the total annual precipitation was maesured during the dry period, which lasted from mid-March until mid-September 1982. The reproductive periods of the species were highly affected by the rainfall distribution. Calling males and/or gravid females of 46 species were found during the study period. 37.0% of the anuran species were exclusively, and 43.5% predominantly, active during the rainy season. Plots of 100 m2 were established at 6 aquatic sites in primary rainforest. A total of 2126 frogs was counted; 93.2% of these were made during the rainy season. A maximum of 378 individuals were found during one check in the plot at the permanent pond. At this site high concentrations of individuals and large choruses were found at the beginning of the rainy season. As soon as favourable temporary aquatic sites were established, reproductive activities decreased at the permanent pond and increased at temporary breeding sites. 相似文献

Abstract. Floristic data collected from permanent plots during 14 consecutive years are used to model the frequency of the 62 most abundant species in relation to post-ploughing succession, topography and rainfall in annual Mediterranean grasslands located in a Quercus rotundifolia dehesa. The interannual dynamics of species richness are also analysed. From 1980 to 1993, presence/absence data of grassland species were noted in five 20 cm X 20 cm permanent quadrats placed at random in 1980 in 14 permanent plots on a south-facing slope along the topographic gradient. Weekly autumn rainfall data over the 14 years were analysed using a profile attributes index and Hybrid Multidimensional Scaling to arrange the years according to their autumn rainfall pattern. Generalized Linear Models were used to fit the species richness and species frequency according to topographic position, age since the last ploughing episode, total rainfall in the growing season and autumn rainfall pattern using a forward stepwise procedure. The richness model includes all of these variables, and reveals a relatively high goodness-of-fit (71 %). The fact that the meteorological factors play a key role in modelling richness forces us to include them if we wish to use richness as an indicator of the degree of disturbance in these highly fluctuating annual pastures. Models of species dynamics show that although roughly 33 % of the species have a successional behaviour, the majority are more dependent on temporal heterogeneity associated with rainfall or spatial heterogeneity linked to the topographic gradient. 相似文献

To increase our insight into the above- and belowground N flows in grass and grass-clover swards relations between crop and soil parameters were studied in a cutting trial with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) monocultures and ryegrass–white clover (Trifolium repens) mixtures. The effects of clover cultivar on herbage yield, the amount of clover-derived nitrogen, apparent N transfer to companion grass, dynamics of N and organic matter in the soil were estimated. The grass monocultures had very low DM yields (<2.1 t ha-1) and a low N concentration in the harvested herbage. During 1992–1995 the annual herbage DM yield in the mixtures ranged from 7.0 to 14.3 t ha-1, the white clover DM yield from 2.4 to 11.2 t ha-1 and the mean annual clover content in the herbage DM harvested from 34 to 78%. Mixtures with the large-leaved clover cv. Alice yielded significantly more herbage and clover DM and had a higher clover content than mixtures with small/medium-leaved cvs. Gwenda and Retor. Grass cultivar did not consistently affect yield, botanical composition or soil characteristics. The apparent N2 fixation was very high, ranging from 150 to 545 kg N ha-1 in the different mixtures. For each tonne of clover DM in the harvested herbage 49 to 63 kg N was harvested, while the apparent N transfer from clover to grass varied between 55 and 113 kg N ha-1 year-1.The net N mineralization rate was lower under monocultures than under mixtures. The C mineralization and the amounts of C and N in active soil organic matter fractions were similar for monocultures and mixtures, but the C:N ratio of the active soil organic matter fractions were higher under grass than under mixtures. This explains the lower N mineralization under grass. 相似文献

The ecology of two intermittent streams in Victoria, Australia 总被引:13,自引:2,他引:13
1. We compared aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblage composition within and between habitats (pools and riffles) at four sites on two intermittent streams in Victoria, Australia during a drought year followed by a wetter year to see how different spatial and temporal scales influenced patterns of community structure detected by multivariate techniques of ordination and classification. We also examined the fit between faunal groups and ‘flow phases’ characterized by multivariate analyses of physicochemical variables in an earlier paper. 2. Pools contained more taxa and individuals than riffles. At the more temporary site, there was considerable overlap between the faunal composition of pools and riffles, whereas habitat-specific assemblages consistently occurred at the more permanent sites. Most taxa were either tolerant, permanent stream forms able to persist in streams that dry briefly, or facultative species that occur in lotic or lentic habitats. Few species appeared specifically adapted to temporary waters. 3. Within habitats, there were some matches between faunal groups and flow phases, especially with the onset of the ‘diminishing flow’ phase, characterized by rising water temperature and conductivity, and declining pH and dissolved oxygen. However, disjunctions among faunal groups were less marked than those between flow phases, and were absent at an intermediate scale when habitats were pooled within sites. At the broadest scale of analysis (within habitats between sites and years), historical events (e.g. whether pools upstream dried completely during the previous summer) apparently influenced community composition as much as site-specific abiotic differences. 相似文献

The diet and impact of house mice on a sub-Antarctic island 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An analysis of the stomach contents of house mice (Mus musculus L.) at three sites on Marion Island (47°S, 38°E) over a 1-year period showed that the mice feed mostly on terrestrial macroinvertebrates but that plants (mainly seed) are an important component of the diet in mid- to late summer. Larvae of a flightless moth, weevil larvae and adults and, at one of the sites, earthworms were the invertebrate items that showed the highest importance value over the year. Diet diversity was slightly lower in summer and autumn than in winter and spring. Diet variety was lowest in midsummer and highest in either autumn or winter, depending on the site. Mean stomach-content mass was significantly higher in midwinter than during the rest of the year. When offered prey of different types and sizes, mice selected moth larvae first in 92% of the trials; earthworms or weevil adults were most frequently selected second, and weevil larvae fourth. An introduced slug species was selected only once, as the last choice and only part of it was eaten. With both moth larvae and earthworms, the heaviest individual offered was almost always chosen first. Surprisingly, mice never consumed more than about half of the seed offered to them and their condition deteriorated severely during the trials with seed; in a third of the trials with two types of seed, the mice completely ignored the seed. The impact of mice predation on invertebrates was assessed at two of the sites - a dry mire and a coastal biotic herbfield that is influenced by seabird and seal manuring. Moth larvae and adults, weevil larvae and adults, earthworms, spiders and flies made up >90% of the animal remains in the stomach contents over the year and, on average, the mice daily consumed 45 g (dry mass) ha-1 of those invertebrates at the mire and 194 g ha-1 at the biotic site. Moth larvae made up a substantial proportion of these amounts; average daily consumption was 30 g ha-1 at the mire and 107 g ha-1 at the biotic site. In terms of the amount consumed in relation to biomass, the heaviest impact of mice at both sites was on weevil adults; at the biotic site mice daily consumed 13% of weevil adult biomass in autumn and nearly 6 times the annual average biomass over the year. At the mire, slightly more than the annual average weevil adult biomass was consumed over the year. The consumption of invertebrates by mice found in this study (1992/1993) was about 20% greater than in 1979/1980. The most striking changes in annual average consumption rate between 1979/1980 and 1992/1993 were for weevil larvae (increased nearly fourfold) and earthworms (increased sixfold at the biotic site and threefold at the mire). In contrast, the consumption of spiders at both sites decreased between 1979/1980 and 1992/1993. 相似文献

Faeces containing Trichostrongylus colubriformis and/or Ostertagia circumcincta eggs were used to provide four contaminations in each of 2 years on plots of browntop, Yorkshire fog, ryegrass, tall fescue, lucerne, chicory, cocksfoot, white clover, and prairie grass and in the second year a mixed sward of ryegrass/white clover. Third stage larvae were recovered from faeces and from four strata of herbage, 0–2.5, 2.5–5, 5–7.5 and >7.5 cm above the soil surface at 2, 4, 6, 8, 11, and 14 weeks after faeces were deposited on the swards. Herbage species had a significant (P < 0.0001) effect on the number of larvae recovered. Greatest numbers of larvae, as indicated by ranking analysis, were recovered from Yorkshire fog, ryegrass, and cocksfoot and lowest numbers from white clover and lucerne. The difference between herbages in numbers of larvae recovered was due to the ‘‘development success’’, the ability of larvae to develop to the infective stage and migrate on to herbage, rather than ‘‘survival’’, the rate of population decline once on the herbage. Faecal degradation was most rapid from white clover and browntop, intermediate from tall fescue, lucerne, prairie grass, cocksfoot, and ryegrass, and slowest from Yorkshire fog swards. The numbers of larvae recovered from herbages were related (r2 = 0.59, P < 0.05) with the faecal mass remaining. A greater proportion of the total larvae recovered from the herbage was recovered from the bottom stratum of Yorkshire fog and prairie grass than from white clover, with the other herbages intermediate, indicating that larvae had greater difficulty migrating up Yorkshire fog and prairie grass than the other herbage species. In most herbage species, despite more larvae being recovered from the lowest stratum, larval density (L3/kg herbage DM) was highest in the top stratum. This study has demonstrated that herbage species can have a significant impact on the population dynamics and vertical migration of T. colubriformis and O. circumcincta larvae. 相似文献

Few studies have considered interactive effects of grazing and drought on species composition and the relative contribution of species to total biomass, although it is important to understand the short-term dynamics and community succession in grazed ecosystems. We monitored species diversity and relative biomass contribution at one site protected from grazing since 1979 (UG79), and at winter grazing (WG) and heavily grazed (HG) sites. Continuous heavy grazing resulted in lower plant height and more but small individuals (tillers or stolons). Drought significantly reduced total plant density on all sites. Grazing affected species diversity more than drought. Species richness at site UG79 was significantly higher than at sites WG and HG, while drought only tended to reduce species diversity. Drought stress and grazing disturbance interactively controlled species competition and functional groups. Both perennial grasses and forbs had greater contribution to total biomass at site UG79, and perennial grasses contributed more than 97% of total biomass at site WG. The contribution to total biomass of annual forbs and semi-shrubs significantly increased at site HG after two dry years. The significant decrease in Potentilla acaulis and a substantial increase in annual species at this site indicate that the perennial vegetation of this ecosystem is in great danger of extinction under conditions of prolonged drought. 相似文献

Infection with alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) was widespread in introduction, evaluation and seed increase plots of cultivars and numbered selections of annual medics (Medicago spp.) in Western Australia; the virus was detected in plots of seven species. When seed stocks from the West Australian annual medic collection harvested in 1984–1986 were sown and seedlings tested, seed-borne AMV was found in all 12 cultivars and in 44/50 numbered selections, belonging to 10 species. Seed transmission rates to seedlings ranged from 0.3–74% and exceeded 5% in 33 seed lots. By contrast, when seedlings of four species grown from seed harvested in 1971–1978 were tested, no AMV was detected; the oldest infected seed stock found was from 1980. In commercial seed stocks of two cultivars released in 1987, the levels of seedling infection with AMV found were 0–0.2% for M. polymorpha cv. Santiago and 526% for M. murex cv. Zodiac. In commercial 1986 seed of M. polymorpha cvs Serena and Circle Valley, AMV was detected in 3/13 and 6/9 stocks respectively; transmission rates to seedlings in infected stocks were 0.1–0.7%. In a survey of 47 annual medic pastures in medium and low rainfall zones of the Western Australian wheat belt in 1987, the virus was detected in leaf samples from only three sites. When inoculated mechanically, AMV systemically infected 11 cultivars and 12 selections belonging to 13 species, but did not infect one selection each of M. aculeata and M. orbicularis. Infected plants in ten species developed only faint mosaics or were symptomlessly infected, but M. littoralis, M. polymorpha and M. tornata developed distinct mottling, reduction in leaf size and, in some instances, leaf deformation and dwarfing. In pot tests, AMV infection decreased herbage and root production (dry wts) of M. polymorpha cvs Serena and Circle Valley by about 30% and 50–60% respectively, but did not decrease herbage production in M. murexcv. Zodiac. In spaced plants growing outside, AMV decreased herbage, root (dry wts) and seed production of M. polymorpha cvs Circle Valley and Santiago by about 60%. 相似文献

Information on lipids in forages is scarce, and effects of nitrogen (N) application level and regrowth period on the fatty acid (FA) concentration and composition of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were studied. N was applied at 0, 45 and 100 kg ha?1, and swards were cut after various regrowth periods, resulting in six treatments designed as randomised blocks with three replicates. The stages of development ranged from vegetative to elongating swards, with herbage yield levels from 1.9 to 4.2 t dry matter (DM) ha?1. Concentrations of individual FA were determined by gas chromatography, and canopy characteristics and herbage quality were assessed. The treatments resulted in canopies with contrasting DM yields and protein concentrations. Five FAs, representing 98% of total FAs, were studied in detail. On an average, the concentration of these major FAs in fresh grass was 15.1 g kg?1 DM, and 69% of the major FAs consisted of C18:3. Regrowth period affected (P < 0.05) the total FA concentration, and significantly (P < 0.01) lower concentrations of C18:3 and C16:1 were found after a longer period of regrowth. N application resulted in higher (P < 0.001) concentrations of all FAs. The FA composition was not affected by N application, but a longer regrowth period significantly (P < 0.001) decreased the proportion of C18:3 and increased those of C18:2 and C16:0. A strong, positive overall linear relation was found between the concentrations of total FAs and C18:3 with the crude protein concentration in the herbage. These studies demonstrate opportunities to affect the FA concentration and composition of FA in herbage through management strategies, which could affect milk FA composition. 相似文献

Grasses grown in mixture with nodulated legumes often are N-limited, but N fertilization may result in reductions of N2 fixation and legume stands. We studied N-fertilizer effects on N2 fixation for three binary legume-grass mixtures in Uruguay. Replicated swards of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) (WC), red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) (RC), or birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) (BT), each in combination with tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb) (TF) at two legume proportions were sown in 1983 (Exp. 1) and 1984 (Exp. 2). In the fall of 1984, N treatments at 100 kg ha−1 and controls were randomly assigned to subplots in Exp. 1 (established swards) and in Exp. 2 (at seeding). The soil for both experiments was a fine, montmorillonitic, mesic, Typic Argiudolls. Herbage fixed-N was estimated by 15N isotope-dilution with pure stands of TF as reference. In both experiments, N fertilization reduced the proportion of legume N derived from air (% Ndfa) and increased herbage yield only during the first 18 to 20 weeks after application. Fertilizer-N reduced annual fixed-N yield from 178 to 148 kg ha−1 in Exp. 1 and from 65 to 29 kg ha−1 in Exp. 2 Fixed-N yield for BT was markedly reduced by N in both experiments (33 to 53%), whereas for the clovers reduction was lesser in Exp. 1 (9 to 13%) than in Exp. 2 (46 to 64%). Negative effects of N on % Ndfa were more evident for the high legume proportion. We conclude that fertilization with 100 kg N ha−1 reduced % Ndfa only for the immediate 18 to 20 weeks after application. Fertilizer-induced reduction of fixed-N yields lasted longer because of a more prolonged depression of legume proportion, especially for BT and for newly seeded swards. Journal Paper no. Plots at each of eight widespread permanent pasture sites below 300 m and representative of large areas of long established grassland in England and Wales, were treated with an insecticide plus molluscicide, a fungicide or nematicide treatment. Populations of various invertebrates and the occurrence of foliar fungal diseases were assessed. Leaf blotch (Drechslera) was the most common disease, but neither this nor other foliar fungal diseases were prevalent until late in the growing season. The fungicide treatment did not control diseases satisfactorily. The fungicide and nematicide treatment had little effect on total annual herbage yield. Leatherjackets, crambids, slugs and frit fly larvae were present, usually in low numbers, at most sites. The insecticide and molluscicide treatment increased yield by 11% on average across all sites and years. Losses caused by pests to UK grasslands were estimated to be over £500 million per year. 相似文献

Mixing the ryegrass mosaic virus (RMV) resistant perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) cv. Endura with the susceptible Italian ryegrass (L. multiflorum) cv. RvP decreased infection of RvP wth RMV from 37% when grown alone to 22% when mixed. However, Endura yielded less than RvP and there was no yield benefit from mixing the two cultivars. Mixing red clover (Trifolium pratense) cv. Hungaropoly with RvP had no detectable effect on RMV incidence in RvP but did decrease the incidence of red clover necrotic mosaic virus in Hungaropoly from 9% to 1% and of white clover mosaic virus from 53-5% to 41%. The yield of the mixture was equal to that of RvP grown alone but given nitrogen fertiliser. The numbers of eriophyid mites, including Abacarus hystrix the vector of RMV, on ryegrass leaves were similar in pure and mixed swards. It is concluded that with herbage crops, the common practice of sowing mixtures of species may help control virus diseases. 相似文献

Increasing plant species diversity has been proposed as a means for enhancing annual pasture productivity and decreasing seasonal variability of pasture production facing more frequent drought scenarios due to climate change. Few studies have examined how botanical complexity of sown swards affects cow performance. A 2-year experiment was conducted to determine how sward botanical complexity, from a monoculture of ryegrass to multi-species swards (MSS) (grasses-legumes-forb), affect pasture chemical composition and nutritive value, pasture dry matter (DM) intake, milk production and milk solids production of grazing dairy cows. Five sward species: perennial ryegrass (L as Lolium), white clover and red clover (both referred to as T as Trifolium because they were always sown together), chicory (C as Cichorium) and tall fescue (F as Festuca) were assigned to four grazing treatments by combining one (L), three (LT), four (LTC) or five (LTCF) species. Hereafter, the LT swards are called mixed swards as a single combination of ryegrass and clovers, whereas LTC and LTCF swards are called MSS as a combination of at least four species from three botanical families. The experimental area (8.7 ha) was divided into four block replicates with a mineral nitrogen fertilisation of 75 kg N/ha per year for each treatment. In total, 13 grazing rotations were carried out by applying the same grazing calendar and the same pasture allowance of 19 kg DM/cow per day above 4 cm for all treatments. Clover represented 20% of DM for mixed and MSS swards; chicory represented 30% of DM for MSS and tall fescue represented 10% of DM for LTCF swards. Higher milk production (+1.1 kg/day) and milk solids production (+0.08 kg/day) were observed for mixed swards than for ryegrass swards. Pasture nutritive value and pasture DM intake were unaffected by the inclusion of clover. Pasture DM, organic matter and NDF concentrations were lower for MSS than for mixed swards. Higher milk production (+0.8 kg/day), milk solids production (+0.04 kg/day) and pasture DM intake (+1.5 kg DM/day) were observed for MSS than for mixed swards. These positive effects of MSS were observed for all seasons, but particularly during summer where chicory proportion was the highest. In conclusion, advantages of grazing MSS on cow performance were due to the cumulative effect of improved pasture nutritive value and increased pasture DM intake that raised milk production and milk solids production. 相似文献

The structure of the seed bank (including Chara oospores), in relation to depth within the sediment and disturbance, was studied in two Rhône delta temporary marshes for two years. The seeds of all species were concentrated in the top 2 cm of sediment with very low numbers beeing found below 4 cm. When an exclosure eliminated disturbances of the sediment by animals, the vertical repartition of seeds at site 2 was more pronounced than outside the exclosure. In experiment 1, the emergence capacity of seeds from different depths and buried under layers of sterile equivalent to those in the field was measured. Depending of the species, 22 to 98% of the seeds germinated from unburied seeds in the top 2 cm. Only 1% of the oospores of Chara (from site 2) at 2 to 4 cm depth in the sediment emerged. In experiment 2, surface seed bank samples were placed under 0, 2 or 4 cm sterile sediment depth. The samples contained numerous recent seeds and the emergence percentage reached 41% (for Ruppia maritima). Only the seeds of Zannichellia spp failed to germinate from a depth of 2 cm or more. The emergence percentage from 2 cm depth or more was always lower than at the surface. These experiments showed that both burial and ageing of seeds decrease germination capacity. The majority of the active seeds located at the surface germinate when the marsh is flooded. Seeds located between 2 and 4 cm can be brought back to the surface by disturbances and play the role of a reserve involved in maintenance of populations that go without seed production for one or some years. 相似文献

Awareness of pond conservation value is growing all over Europe. Ponds are recognized as important ecosystems supporting large numbers of species and several rare and threatened aquatic plants, macroinvertebrates and amphibians. Notwithstanding ponds, particularly temporary ones, are still neglected in Italy. There are some gaps in our understanding of the macrophyte ecology and the conservation value of Mediterranean small still waters. Therefore, this study investigated the macrophyte communities and physico-chemical characteristics of 8 permanent and 13 temporary ponds along the Tyrrhenian coast near Rome, with the aim to relate the distribution of aquatic plants to environmental variables, and to define the botanical conservation value of ponds. Throughout the study period (Spring 2002), Principal Component Analysis performed on abiotic variables clearly discriminated temporary ponds, smaller and more eutrophic, from permanent ponds, larger and with higher pH and oxygen concentration. A total of 73 macrophyte taxa were collected in the study ponds. Temporary waters hosted a smaller number of plant species than permanent ones. Besides hydroperiod length, the environmental factors related to plant richness were maximum depth, surface area, dissolved oxygen and nitrogen concentration in the water. Moreover, the Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling showed a high dissimilarity in the taxonomic composition of aquatic plants between temporary and permanent ponds. The former contained more annual fast-growing species (Callitriche sp. pl. and Ranunculus sp. pl.), while in the latter species with long life-cycles (i.e. Potamogeton sp. pl.) were more abundant. Our results highlighted that temporary and permanent ponds in central Italy have different macrophyte assemblages, with aquatic species (including some of conservation interest at regional scale) exclusively found in each pond type. This suggested that both type of ponds could give an irreplaceable contribution to the conservation of aquatic plant diversity of these freshwater ecosystems. The relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functions of grasslands has received increasing attention in recent years. So far, experiments were mostly conducted in experimental grasslands. We used a different approach on permanent grassland by applying herbicides selective against either dicots or monocots. This allowed us to alter plant species composition and evenness and to obtain altered constellations of functional group abundances without deliberate introduction of new species or continued disturbance by weeding. The resulting swards were subjected to different management intensities in terms of cutting regime and fertilization. Compared to the baseline data before herbicide application, within one year, the combination of treatments, especially the herbicide application, led to a broad variety of swards with the herbicide treatment alone accounting for more than 25% of the variance in composition. We conclude that the application of specific herbicides is a method highly suitable for creating different sward types, because the swards differed significantly in species number, evenness and composition of functional groups without showing signs of disturbance, as neither the area of open soil nor the proportion of annual colonizer species increased. 相似文献

Indigenous Sorghum species dominate the understorey of the savannas of tropical northwestern Australia. The nutrient capital of these grasses was investigated and the consequences for nutrient cycling, the effects of fire, and herbivory were discussed. The macronutrient concentrations in two annual species, S. intrans and S. stipoideum indicated that their growth was nutrient limited. The breakdown of litter may provide up to one quarter of the N yield of S. intrans, hence losses of N due to dry season fires, which consume this litter, may reduce grass growth. However, this effect was not apparent after one fire. From the first sampling, approximately 60 days after germination, until maturity, the herbage of S. intrans and S. stipoideum contained insufficient N and P to maintain the liveweight of cattle. Translocation to the inflorescence during seed set left the herbage grossly deficient for livestock maintenance during the dry season. The relative lack of large native herbivores is consistent with this poor herbage quality. Nutrient concentrations in the seeds of nine Sorghum species (including two perennials) were measured. The concentrations were relatively high, which accounts for the importance of the seeds of the indigenous Sorghum species for granivorous rodents, birds, and ants. Macro-nutrient concentrations were similar in both annual and perennial species. 相似文献
