Active females demonstrate increased risk for musculoskeletal injuries relative to equivalently-trained males. Although gender differences in factors such as passive laxity, skeletal geometry and kinematics have been examined, the effect of gender on active muscle stiffness has not been reported. Stiffness of the active quadriceps and hamstrings musculature were recorded during isometric knee flexion and extension exertions from twelve male and eleven female subjects. A second-order biomechanical model of joint dynamics was used to quantify stiffness from the transient motion response to an angular perturbation of the lower-leg. Female subjects demonstrated reduced active stiffness relative to male subjects at all torque levels, with levels 56-73% of the males. Effective stiffness increased linearly with the torque load, with stiffness increasing at a rate of 3.3 Nm/rad per unit of knee moment in knee flexion exertions (hamstrings) and 6.6 Nm/rad per unit of knee moment extension exertions (quadriceps). To account for gender differences in applied moment associated with leg mass, regressions analyses were completed that demonstrated a gender difference in the slope of stiffness-versus-knee moment relation. Further research is necessary to identify the cause of the observed biomechanical difference and implications for controlling injury.  相似文献

Neuromuscular factors that contribute to spinal stability include trunk stiffness from passive and active tissues as well as active feedback from reflex response in the paraspinal muscles. Trunk flexion postures are a recognized risk factor for occupational low-back pain and may influence these stabilizing control factors. Sixteen healthy adult subjects participated in an experiment to record trunk stiffness and paraspinal muscle reflex gain during voluntary isometric trunk extension exertions. The protocol was designed to achieve trunk flexion without concomitant influences of external gravitational moment, i.e., decouple the effects of trunk flexion posture from trunk moment. Systems identification analyses identified reflex gain by quantifying the relation between applied force disturbances and time-dependent EMG response in the lumbar paraspinal muscles. Trunk stiffness was characterized from a second order model describing the dynamic relation between the force disturbances versus the kinematic response of the torso. Trunk stiffness increased significantly with flexion angle and exertion level. This was attributed to passive tissue contributions to stiffness. Reflex gain declined significantly with trunk flexion angle but increased with exertion level. These trends were attributed to correlated changes in baseline EMG recruitment in the lumbar paraspinal muscles. Female subjects demonstrated greater reflex gain than males and the decline in reflex gain with flexion angle was greater in females than in males. Results reveal that torso flexion influences neuromuscular factors that control spinal stability and suggest that posture may contribute to the risk of instability injury.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to quantify strain and elongation of the long head of the biceps femoris (BFlh) and the semitendinosus (ST) tendon/aponeurosis. Forty participants performed passive knee extension trials from 90° of knee flexion to full extension (0°) followed by ramp isometric contractions of the knee flexors at 0°, 45° and 90° of knee flexion. Two ultrasound probes were used to visualize the displacement of BFlh and ST tendon/aponeurosis. Three-way analysis of variance designs indicated that: (a) Tendon/aponeurosis (passive) elongation and strain were higher for the BFlh than the ST as the knee was passively extended (p < 0.05), (b) contraction at each angular position was accompanied by a smaller BFlh tendon/aponeurosis (active) strain and elongation than the ST at higher levels of effort (p < 0.05) and (c) combined (passive and active) strain was significantly higher for the BFlh than ST during ramp contraction at 0° but the opposite was observed for the 45° and 90° flexion angle tests (p < 0.05). Passive elongation of tendon/aponeurosis has an important effect on the tendon/aponeurosis behavior of the hamstrings and may contribute to a different loading of muscle fibers and tendinous tissue between BFlh and ST.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of different muscle contraction modes and intensities on patellar tendon moment arm length (d(PT)). Five men performed isokinetic concentric, eccentric and passive knee extensions at an angular velocity of 60 deg/s and six men performed gradually increasing to maximum effort isometric muscle contractions at 90( composite function) and 20( composite function) of knee flexion. During the tests, lateral X-ray fluoroscopy imaging was used to scan the knee joint. The d(PT) differences between the passive state and the isokinetic concentric and extension were quantified at 15( composite function) intervals of knee joint flexion angle. Furthermore, the changes of the d(PT) as a function of the isometric muscle contraction intensities were determined during the isometric knee extension at 90( composite function) and 20( composite function) of knee joint flexion. Muscle contraction-induced changes in knee joint flexion angle during the isometric muscle contraction were also taken into account for the d(PT) measurements. During the two isometric knee extensions, d(PT) increased from rest to maximum voluntary muscle contraction (MVC) by 14-15%. However, when changes in knee joint flexion angle induced by the muscle contraction were taken into account, d(PT) during MVC increased by 6-26% compared with rest. Moreover, d(PT) increased during concentric and eccentric knee extension by 3-15%, depending on knee flexion angle, compared with passive knee extension. These findings have important implications for estimating musculoskeletal loads using modelling under static and dynamic conditions.  相似文献

The role of extracellular elements on the mechanical properties of skeletal muscles is unknown. Merosin is an essential extracellular matrix protein that forms a mechanical junction between the sarcolemma and collagen. Therefore, it is possible that merosin plays a role in force transmission between muscle fibers and collagen. We hypothesized that deficiency in merosin may alter passive muscle stiffness, viscoelastic properties, and contractile muscle force in skeletal muscles. We used the dy/dy mouse, a merosin-deficient mouse model, to examine changes in passive and active muscle mechanics. After mice were anesthetized and the diaphragm or the biceps femoris hindlimb muscle was excised, passive length-tension relationships, stress-relaxation curves, or isometric contractile properties were determined with an in vitro biaxial mechanical testing apparatus. Compared with controls, extensibility was smaller in the muscle fiber direction and the transverse fiber direction of the mutant mice. The relaxed elastic modulus was smaller in merosin-deficient diaphragms compared with controls. Interestingly, maximal muscle tetanic stress was depressed in muscles from the mutant mice during uniaxial loading but not during biaxial loading. However, presence of transverse passive stretch increases maximal contractile stress in both the mutant and normal mice. Our data suggest that merosin contributes to muscle passive stiffness, viscoelasticity, and contractility and that the mechanism by which force is transmitted between adjacent myofibers via merosin possibly in shear.  相似文献

Soleus muscle has, to as great an extent as possible, been functionally isolated in man. A device previously described permitted measurement of the soleus torque as a function of the tibia-calcaneum angle, and not as a function of tibia-foot angle. This latter angle cannot be correctly related to soleus length, since the arch of the foot can not be considered as rigid throughout the experiment. Ankle movements were performed on a horizontal plane by successive increments of 5 degrees from full extension (plantar flexion) up to full flexion (dorsiflexion). Passive torques were measured for every angle. At the same angles, the total torques were recorded while the subject exerted a voluntary constant contraction which corresponded to 45% of the maximum integrated electromyographical activity of soleus muscle. The active torque-angle curve was obtained by subtracting, for the same angle, the passive from the total torques. It must be stressed that, when the muscle is maximally shortened, little or no torque was measured. For the angle corresponding to the top of the sub-maximal active curve (integrated electromyographic activity 45% of the maximum), the passive torque was about 1.75 Nm and showed no significant interindividual variations. This result contrasted with the marked interindividual shifts which affect both passive and active curves. This interdependence of passive and active curves in human soleus muscle is compatible with the results of a previous study in the cat showing the concomitant adaptations of sarcomere number and connective tissue length.  相似文献

Stroke survivors routinely experience long-term motor and sensory impairments. In parallel with neurological changes, material properties of muscles in the impaired limbs, such as muscle stiffness, may also change progressively. However, these stiffness measures are routinely derived from individual joint stiffness, representing whole muscle groups. Here, we use shear wave (SW) ultrasound elastography to measure SW velocity, as a surrogate measure of stiffness, to quantify material properties in individual muscles. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to compare muscle material properties of the bicep brachii in stroke survivors and in age-matched control subjects by measuring SW velocity at rest and different voluntary activation levels. Our main findings show that at rest, the SW velocity was on average 41% greater in the paretic muscle compared the contralateral non-paretic muscle. The mean passive SW velocity across all subjects were 2.34 ± 0.41 m/s for the non-paretic side, 3.30 ± 1.20 m/s for the paretic side, and 2.24 ± 0.18 for controls. SW velocity was significantly different in muscles of the paretic and non-paretic side (p < 0.001), but not between muscles of the non-paretic and controls (p = 0.47). As voluntary activation increased, SW velocity increased non-linearly, with an average power fit of r2 = 0.83 ± 0.09 for the non-paretic side, r2 = 0.61 ± 0.24 for the paretic side, and r2 = 0.24 ± 0.15 for the healthy age-matched controls. In active muscle (10, 25, 50, 75, 100% maximum voluntary contraction), there was no significant difference in SW velocity between the non-paretic, paretic, and control muscles.These findings suggest that stroke-impaired muscles have potentially altered muscle material properties, specifically stiffness, and that passive and active stiffness may contribute differently to total muscle stiffness.  相似文献

The interplay between passive and active mechanical properties of indirect flight muscle of the waterbug (Lethocerus) was investigated. A functional dissection of the relative contribution of cross-bridges, actin filaments, and C filaments to tension and stiffness of passive, activated, and rigor fibers was carried out by comparing mechanical properties at different ionic strengths of sarcomeres with and without thin filaments. Selective thin filament removal was accomplished by treatment with the actin-severving protein gelsolin. Thin filament, removal had no effect on passive tension, indicating that the C filament and the actin filament are mechanically independent and that passive tension is developed by the C filament in response to sarcomere stretch. Passive tension increased steeply with sarcomere length until an elastic limit was reached at only 6-7% sarcomere extension, which corresponds to an extension of 350% of the C filament. The passive tension-length relation of insect flight muscle was analyzed using a segmental extension model of passive tension development (Wang, K, R. McCarter, J. Wright, B. Jennate, and R Ramirez-Mitchell. 1991. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA. 88:7101-7109). Thin filament removal greatly depressed high frequency passive stiffness (2.2 kHz) and eliminated the ionic strength sensitivity of passive stiffness. It is likely that the passive stiffness component that is removed by gelsolin is derived from weak-binding cross-bridges, while the component that remains is derived from the C filament. Our results indicate that a significant number of weak-binding cross-bridges exist in passive insect muscle at room temperature and at an ionic strength of 195 mM. Analysis of rigor muscle indicated that while rigor tension is entirely actin based, rigor stiffness contains a component that resists gelsolin treatment and is therefore likely to be C filament based. Active tension and active stiffness of unextracted fibers were directly proportional to passive tension before activation. Similarly, passive stiffness due to weak bridges also increased linearly with passive tension, up to a limit. These correlations lead us to propose a stress-activation model for insect flight muscle in which passive tension is a prerequisite for the formation of both weak-binding and strong-binding cross-bridges.  相似文献

It is unclear whether humans can voluntarily control dynamic and static properties in knee abduction-adduction, which may be important in performing functional tasks and preventing injuries, whether the main load is about the abduction axis or not. A joint-driving device was used to perturb the knee in abduction-adduction at full knee extension under both passive (muscle relaxed) and active (muscle contracted in abduction or adduction) conditions. Dynamic control properties in knee abduction-adduction were characterized by joint stiffness, viscosity, and limb inertia, and quasi-static knee torque-angle relationship was characterized by knee abduction-adduction laxity and quasi-static stiffness (at a 20Nm moment). It was found that the subjects were capable of generating net abduction and adduction moment through differential co-contraction of muscles crossing the medial and lateral sides of the knee, which helped to reduce the abduction-adduction joint laxity (p< or =0.01) and increase stiffness (p<0.027) and viscous damping. Knee abduction laxity was significantly lower than adduction laxity (p=0.043) and the quasi-static abduction stiffness was significantly higher than adduction stiffness (p<0.001). The knee joint showed significantly higher stiffness and viscosity in abduction-adduction than their counterparts in knee flexion-extension at comparable levels of joint torque (p<0.05). Similar to dynamic flexion-extension properties, the system damping ratio remained constant over different levels of contraction, indicating simplified control tasks for the central nervous system; while the natural undamped frequency increased considerably with abduction-adduction muscle contraction, presumably making the knee a quicker system during strenuous tasks involving strong muscle contraction.  相似文献

Static stretching is frequently performed to improve flexibility of the hamstrings, although the ankle position during hamstring stretching has not been fully investigated. We investigated the effects of ankle position during hamstring stretching on the decrease in passive stiffness. Fourteen healthy men performed static stretching for the hamstrings with the ankle dorsiflexed and plantar-flexed in a randomized order on different days. The hip was passively flexed to the maximum angle which could be tolerated without stretch pain with the knee fully extended; this was maintained for 5 min, with 1-min stretching performed in 5 sessions. Final angles and passive stiffness were measured before and after stretching. The final angle was defined as that formed by the tibia and horizontal plane when the knee was passively extended from hip and knee angles at 90° flexion to the maximum extension angle which could be tolerated without stretch pain. Passive stiffness was determined by the slope of torque–angle curve during the measurement of the final angle. The final angle significantly increased after stretching with the ankle dorsiflexed and plantar-flexed, whereas passive stiffness significantly decreased only after stretching with the ankle planter-flexed. The results suggest that passive stiffness decreases after stretching with the ankle planter-flexed but not after stretching with the ankle dorsiflexed, although the range of joint motion increases regardless of the ankle position during 5-min stretching for the hamstrings. These results indicate that static stretching should be performed with the ankle plantar-flexed when aiming to decrease passive stiffness of the hamstrings.  相似文献

In many occupational settings (e.g. agriculture and construction) workers are asked to maintain static flexed postures of the low back for extended periods of time. Recent research indicates that the resulting strain in the viscoelastic, ligamentous tissues may have a deleterious effect on the stability of the spine and the normal reflex response of spinal tissues. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the previously described flexion-relaxation response in terms of the interactive effect of trunk flexion angle (30 degrees, 50 degrees, 70 degrees, 90 degrees ), knee flexion angle (0 degrees (straight knees), 20 degrees, 40 degrees ) and individual flexibiliteky (low, medium, and high). These conditions were tested under two levels of loading: no load (just supporting the weight of the torso) and trunk extension moment equal to 50% of the subject's posture-specific maximum voluntary trunk extension capacity. Surface electromyographic (EMG) data were collected from the multifidus, the longissimus, the iliocostalis, the vastus medialis, the rectus femoris, the vastus lateralis, the biceps femoris, and the gastrocnemius-soleus group from a sample of eight male participants as they performed isometric weight holding tasks in the postures defined by the combinations of trunk angle and knee angle. The results of this study showed that knee angle did have a significant effect on the lumbar extensor muscle activity but only consistently at the 90 degrees trunk angle. Participant flexibility showed a consistent trend of decreasing lumbar extensor muscle activity with decreased flexibility across all trunk angle values. Most interesting was the interactive response of flexibility and knee angle, wherein the flexibility of the participant influenced the trunk angles at which the knee flexion angle affected the flexion-relaxation response. Highly flexible subjects showed an effect of knee angle on the flexion-relaxation response only at the 90 degrees trunk angle; subjects in the medium flexibility category showed a similar response in both the 70 degrees and 90 degrees trunk angles; subject in the low flexibility group showed no knee angle effect on the flexion-relaxation response. Overall the results confirm previous results with regard to the contribution of the passive tissues to the overall trunk extension moment but also show that the tension in the bi-articular biceps femoris, which was influenced by knee flexion angle and flexibility, affects the ratio of active extensor moment contributions of the lumbar extensor musculature to passive extensor moment contributions from the muscular and ligamentous tissues. The results of this study provide empirical data describing this complicated, interactive response.  相似文献

The exact mechanical function of synergist muscles within a human limb in vivo is not well described. Recent studies indicate the existence of a mechanical interaction between muscle actuators that may have functional significance and further play a role for injury mechanisms. The purpose of the present study was to investigate if intermuscular force transmission occurs within and between human plantarflexor muscles in vivo. Seven subjects performed four types of either active contractile tasks or passive joint manipulations: passive knee extension, voluntary isometric plantarflexion, voluntary isometric hallux flexion, passive hallux extension, and selective percutaneous stimulation of the gastrocnemius medialis (MG). In each experiment plantar- and hallux flexion force and corresponding EMG activity were sampled. During all tasks ultrasonography was applied at proximal and distal sites to assess task-induced tissue displacement (which is assumed to represent loading) for the plantarflexor muscles [MG, soleus (SOL), and flexor hallucis longus (FHL)]. Selective MG stimulation and passive knee extension resulted in displacement of both the MG and SOL muscles. Minimal displacement of the triceps surae muscles was seen during passive hallux extension. Large interindividual differences with respect to deep plantarflexor activation during voluntary contractions were observed. The present results suggest that force may be transmitted between the triceps surae muscles in vivo, while only limited evidence was provided for the occurrence of force transfer between the triceps surae and the deeper-lying FHL.  相似文献

The passive elastic properties of a muscle-tendon complex are usually estimated from the relationship between the joint angle and the passive resistive torque, although the properties of the different structures crossing the joint cannot be easily assessed. This study aimed to determine the passive mechanical properties of the gastrocnemius medialis muscle (GM) using supersonic shear imaging (SSI) that allows the measurement of localized muscle shear modulus (μ). The SSI of the GM was taken for 7 subjects during passive ankle dorsiflexion at a range of knee positions performed on an isokinetic dynamometer. Spinal stability is related to the recruitment and control of active muscle stiffness. Stochastic system identification techniques were used to calculate the effective stiffness and dynamics of the trunk during active trunk extension exertions. Twenty-one healthy adult subjects (10 males, 11 females) wore a harness with a cable attached to a servomotor such that isotonic flexion preloads of 100, 135, and 170 N were applied at the T10 level of the trunk. A pseudorandom stochastic force sequence (bandwidth 0-10 Hz, amplitude +/-30 N) was superimposed on the preload causing small amplitude trunk movements. Nonparametric impulse response functions of trunk dynamics were computed and revealed that the system exhibited underdamped second-order behavior. Second-order trunk dynamics were determined by calculating the best least-squares fit to the IRF. The quality of the model was quantified by comparing estimated and observed displacement variance accounted for (VAF), and quality of the second-order fits was calculated as a percentage and referred to as fit accuracy. Mean VAF and fit accuracy were 87.8 +/- 4.0% and 96.0 +/- 4.3%, respectively, indicating that the model accurately represented active trunk kinematic response. The accuracy of the kinematic representation was not influenced by preload or gender. Mean effective stiffness was 2.78 +/- 0.96 N/mm and increased significantly with preload (p < 0.001), but did not vary with gender (p = 0.425). Mean effective damping was 314 +/- 72 Ns/m and effective trunk mass was 37.0 +/- 9.3 kg. We conclude that stochastic system identification techniques should be used to calculate effective trunk stiffness and dynamics.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to determine the in vivo passive mechanical properties, including the length below the slack length, of the gastrocnemius muscle (GAS) belly in humans. Transverse ultrasound images of the medial head of the GAS were taken in 11 subjects during passive knee extension from 80 degrees to 5 degrees with a constant ankle joint angle of 10 degrees (0 degrees is the neutral ankle position: positive values for dorsiflexion). The change in passive ankle joint moment (Mp), which is produced only by the GAS length change, was also measured during passive knee extension. The onset of Mp during passive knee extension was found to be 43+/-8 degrees (mean+/-SD) when the baseline of the Mp was set at the average Mp in the range of 55-60 degrees where the Mp was almost constant (SD<0.03 Nm). At this onset, the muscle fascicle length of the GAS (Lf) was 46+/-7 mm (slack length; Lfs). Lf at 80 degrees was 6+/-4 mm (13+/-6%) less than the Lfs, and Lf at 5 degrees was 12+/-5 mm (27+/-11%) greater than the Lfs. The passive force-resisting compression of the GAS did not produce a dorsiflexion moment in the joint angle range adopted. The passive ankle joint moment increased linearly with Lf (coefficient of determination (R2)=0.85-0.96), and the slopes of the relationships between Lf and Mp, and between the relative Lf to Lfs and Mp were 0.093+/-0.038 Nm/mm and 0.043+/-0.021 Nm/%Lfs. The findings of the present study can be implemented in musculoskeletal modeling, which would provide a more accurate evaluation of the passive mechanical properties of muscle during movement.  相似文献

The interaction between the semitendinosus muscle and both hip and knee joint angles was examined in the frog (Rana pipiens) hindlimb. Sarcomere length was measured by laser diffraction in passive muscle during hip and knee rotation. A model was then developed to predict semitendinosus sarcomere length as a function of both hip and knee flexion angle. Based on published frog muscle fiber length-tension [Gordon, A. M. et al., J. Physiol. 184, 170-192 (1966)] and force-velocity [Edman, K. A. P., J. Physiol. 291, 143-159 (1979)] properties, and published joint angles during hopping [Calow, L. J. and Alexander, R. McN., J. Zool. (Lond.) 171, 293-321 (1973)], muscle sarcomere length, force and hip and knee torque during a hop were predicted. The semitendinosus muscle generally operated on the descending limb of the length-tension curve at normal joint angle combinations. The model predicted that, during a single coordinated movement, a period of sarcomere shortening (concentric) was followed by a period of sarcomere lengthening (eccentric). Based on calculated torque profiles at the hip and knee joints, this study suggested that the semitendinosus muscle probably functions more as a hip extensor than a knee flexor. In addition, based on the nature of the shortening-lengthening cycle, the semitendinosus may act to mechanically link the force of knee extension to hip extension.  相似文献

The active and passive contractile performance of skeletal muscle fibers largely depends on the myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoform and the stiffness of the titin spring, respectively. Open questions concern the relationship between titin-based stiffness and active contractile parameters, and titin's importance for total passive muscle stiffness. Here, a large set of adult rabbit muscles (n = 37) was studied for titin size diversity, passive mechanical properties, and possible correlations with the fiber/MHC composition. Titin isoform analyses showed sizes between approximately 3300 and 3700 kD; 31 muscles contained a single isoform, six muscles coexpressed two isoforms, including the psoas, where individual fibers expressed similar isoform ratios of 30:70 (3.4:3.3 MD). Gel electrophoresis and Western blotting of two other giant muscle proteins, nebulin and obscurin, demonstrated muscle type-dependent size differences of < or =70 kD. Single fiber and single myofibril mechanics performed on a subset of muscles showed inverse relationships between titin size and titin-borne tension. Force measurements on muscle strips suggested that titin-based stiffness is not correlated with total passive stiffness, which is largely determined also by extramyofibrillar structures, particularly collagen. Some muscles have low titin-based stiffness but high total passive stiffness, whereas the opposite is true for other muscles. Plots of titin size versus percentage of fiber type or MHC isoform (I-IIB-IIA-IID) determined by myofibrillar ATPase staining and gel electrophoresis revealed modest correlations with the type I fiber and MHC-I proportions. No relationships were found with the proportions of the different type II fiber/MHC-II subtypes. Titin-based stiffness decreased with the slow fiber/MHC percentage, whereas neither extramyofibrillar nor total passive stiffness depended on the fiber/MHC composition. In conclusion, a low correlation exists between the active and passive mechanical properties of skeletal muscle fibers. Slow muscles usually express long titin(s), predominantly fast muscles can express either short or long titin(s), giving rise to low titin-based stiffness in slow muscles and highly variable stiffness in fast muscles. Titin contributes substantially to total passive stiffness, but this contribution varies greatly among muscles.  相似文献

Leg stiffness was compared between age-matched males and females during hopping at preferred and controlled frequencies. Stiffness was defined as the linear regression slope between the vertical center of mass (COM) displacement and ground-reaction forces recorded from a force plate during the stance phase of the hopping task. Results demonstrate that subjects modulated the vertical displacement of the COM during ground contact in relation to the square of hopping frequency. This supports the accuracy of the spring-mass oscillator as a representative model of hopping. It also maintained peak vertical ground-reaction load at approximately three times body weight. Leg stiffness values in males (33.9+/-8.7 kN/m) were significantly (p<0.01) greater than in females (26.3+/-6.5 kN/m) at each of three hopping frequencies, 3.0, 2.5 Hz, and a preferred hopping rate. In the spring-mass oscillator model leg stiffness and body mass are related to the frequency of motion. Thus male subjects necessarily recruited greater leg stiffness to drive their heavier body mass at the same frequency as the lighter female subjects during the controlled frequency trials. However, in the preferred hopping condition the stiffness was not constrained by the task because frequency was self-selected. Nonetheless, both male and female subjects hopped at statistically similar preferred frequencies (2.34+/-0.22 Hz), therefore, the females continued to demonstrate less leg stiffness. Recognizing the active muscle stiffness contributes to biomechanical stability as well as leg stiffness, these results may provide insight into the gender bias in risk of musculoskeletal knee injury.  相似文献

Although a multitude of factors that influence skeletal muscle blood flow have been extensively investigated, the influence of muscle length on limb blood flow has received little attention. Thus the purpose of this investigation was to determine if cyclic changes in muscle length influence resting blood flow. Nine healthy men (28 ± 4 yr of age) underwent a passive knee extension protocol during which the subjects' knee joint was passively extended and flexed through 100-180° knee joint angle at a rate of 1 cycle per 30 s. Femoral blood flow, cardiac output (CO), heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were continuously recorded during the entire protocol. These measurements revealed that slow passive changes in knee joint angle did not have a significant influence on HR, SV, MAP, or CO; however, net femoral blood flow demonstrated a curvilinear increase with knee joint angle (r(2) = 0.98) such that blood flow increased by ~90% (125 ml/min) across the 80° range of motion. This net change in blood flow was due to a constant antegrade blood flow across knee joint angle and negative relationship between retrograde blood flow and knee joint angle (r(2) = 0.98). Thus, despite the absence of central hemodynamic changes and local metabolic factors, blood flow to the leg was altered by changes in muscle length. Therefore, when designing research protocols, researchers need to be cognizant of the fact that joint angle, and ultimately muscle length, influence limb blood flow.  相似文献

Alpha-sarcoglycan (ASG) is a transmembrane protein of the dystrophin-associated complex, and absence of ASG causes limb-girdle muscular dystrophy. We hypothesize that disruption of the sarcoglycan complex may alter muscle extensibility and disrupt the coupling between passive transverse and axial contractile elements in the diaphragm. We determined the length-tension relationships of the diaphragm of young ASG-deficient mice and their controls during uniaxial and biaxial loading. We also determined the isometric contractile properties of the diaphragm muscles from mutant and normal mice in the absence and presence of passive transverse stress. We found that the diaphragm muscles of the null mutants for the protein ASG show 1) significant decrease in muscle extensibility in the directions of the muscle fibers and transverse to fibers, 2) significant reductions in force-generating capacity, and 3) significant reductions in coupling between longitudinal and transverse properties. Thus these findings suggest that the sarcoglycan complex serves a mechanical function in the diaphragm by contributing to muscle passive stiffness and to the modulation of the contractile properties of the muscle.  相似文献
