Summed potentials were recorded from the dorsal recurrent facialnerve innervating the solitary chemoreceptor cells on the anteriordorsal fin (ADF), from the ventral recurrent facial nerve innervatingboth taste buds and solitary chemoreceptor cells on the pectoral(PEC) and pelvic (PEL) fins, and from the anterior dorsal finmuscles in the rockling, Ciliata mustela. There is little overlapbetween the sumulus spectra of solitary chemoreceptor cellsand taste buds. The ADF solitary cells are particularly sensitiveto body mucus (skin water) of non-congeners like Gadus, Solea,Cottus, Mugil, Zoarces, Gaidropsarus, and Encheliopus, but insensitiveto amino acids and a variety of body fluids of fish, invertebrates,and extracts of potential stimuli like algae and sand. Pectoraland pelvic fins are particularly sensitive to amino acids, bodyfluids of fish and invertebrates, but less sensitive to skinmucus of fish, probably due to the abundance of taste buds.Active sampling by undulation of the anterior dorsal fin isessential for proper functioning; it induces disadaptation ofthe receptor elements. Solitary chemoreceptor cells provide,apparently, cues to discriminate between conspecifics and non-conspecifics.It is unlikely that they are involved in pheromone detection.  相似文献

Female mate preference in a bower-holding cichlid, Cyathopharynx furcifer, was studied in Lake Tanganyika. Most males held territories with crater-shaped bowers in sand, but some males held territories without bowers. Territories were distributed adjacently and females visited them to spawn. After engaging in circling behaviour with the male, a female deposited eggs in the bower. Soon after spawning, the female picked the eggs up into her mouth and brooded them in places away from male territories. Female mate choice appeared to follow three steps: 1) females visited only bower-holding male territories, and more frequently visited territories of males that performed courtship displays at a higher frequency and had longer pelvic fins; 2) females preferred to start circling with males having longer and more symmetrical pelvic fins; 3) females chose males with more symmetrical pelvic fins as their mates. Less than 7% of females that visited male territories spawned eggs in the bowers. In contrast to other bower-holding species, bower size did not correlate with male reproductive success in C. furcifer. Bowers may therefore be essential as spawning sites or may function as a species recognition character for females. Female choice may be dependent instead on males having long and symmetrical pelvic fins apparent during the circling behaviour carried out in the bowers.  相似文献

The developmental sequence of morphological characteristics related to swimming and feeding functions was investigated in hatchery-reared larvae and juveniles ofSebastes schlegeli, a viviparous scorpaenid. The fish were extruded at an early larval stage, when the mean body size was 6.23 mm TL. Fin-ray rudiments became visible at 9.0 mm TL in the dorsal and anal fins, at 8.0 mm TL in the pectoral and pelvic fins and 6.0 mm TL (size at extrusion) in the caudal fin. Completion of segmentation of soft rays in the dorsal and anal fins was attained by 14 mm TL and in all fins by 17 mm TL. Branching of soft rays in the respective fins started and was completed considerably later than the completion of segmentation, as well as ossification of the fin-supports. Morphological transformation from larva to juvenile was apparently completed by about 17 mm TL. Although the completion of basic juvenile structures was attained by transformation at that body size, succeeding morphological changes occurred between 17 mm and 32 mm TL. Newly-extruded larvae possessed one or two teeth on the lower pharyngeal and pharyngobranchials 3 and 4, but lacked premaxillary, dentary, palatine and prevomer teeth. The fish attained full development of gill rakers and gill teeth by 15 mm TL, the upper and lower pharyngeal teeth subsequently developing into a toothplate. Development of the premaxillary, dentary and palatine teeth was completed at about 30 mm TL, by which time loop formation of the digestive canal and the number of pyloric caeca had attained the adult condition. The developmental sequence of swimming and feeding functions during larval and early juvenile periods appeared to proceed from primitive functions to advanced or complex ones, from the ability to produce propulsive force to that of swimming with high maneuverability and from development of the irreducible minimum function of passing food into the stomach to the ability to actively capture prey via passive food acquisition with the gill rakers and gill teeth. The relationship of morphological development to the behavior and feeding activity of artificially-produced hatchlings is also discussed.  相似文献

A new nematode species, Philometra diplectri n. sp. (Philometridae), is described from male and female specimens found in unidentified tissues of head and anterior trunk (males) and subcutaneously in the mouth and under the operculum (females) of sand perch, Diplectrum formosum (Linnaeus) (Serranidae, Perciformes), from the northern Gulf of Mexico off Florida (Florida Middle Grounds). Based on light and scanning electron microscopy examination, the new species differs from other congeners parasitizing the subcutaneous tissues, fins, tissues of the buccal cavity, and gill covers or gill arches of marine and brackish-water fishes, mainly in having 8 conspicuously large cephalic papillae of the external circle, the absence of caudal projections, and the shape and small size of the anterior inflation of the esophagus in gravid females, and in possessing 5 pairs of caudal papillae and spicules 66-78 μm long in males. Philometra diplectri is the first known species of this genus whose gravid females are parasitic in the head tissues of serranid fishes.  相似文献

Summary The Archipterygium is Gegenbaur’s most lasting contribution to the study of vertebrate limb evolution. This transformational hypothesis of gill arches to limb girdles, rays to fins, and proposal of a vertebrate fin-limb groundplan, is generally treated as a flawed alternative to the more widely accepted lateral fin-fold hypothesis of vertebrate limb evolution. When compared to the phylogenetic distribution and diversity of fins and limbs, both hypotheses fail. Dermal skeletal lateral folds, spines and keels originate repeatedly in vertebrate evolution, but paired fins with girdles originate at pectoral level and are anteroposteriorly restricted. Pelvic fins emerge later in phylogeny; pectoral and pelvic appendages primitively differ. Endoskeletal girdles never exhibit characteristics of gill arches. The emergent sequence of paired fin evolution depends upon phylogenetic hypotheses within which extant agnathan interrelationships are uncertain; positions of jawless fossil fish along the gnathostome stem are insecure; the fossil data set is patchy. However, certain features of the data set are robust. This has prompted a reconsideration of Gegenbaur’s hypothesized arch-girdle relationship, and an iterative homology between scapulocoracoid and extrabranchial cartilages is suggested. No transformation of arch to girdle is necessarily implied, but some signal of developmental relatedness is predicted.  相似文献

The structurally reinforced jaws of the cownose ray, Rhinoptera bonasus testify to this species' durophagous diet of mollusks, but seem ill-suited to the behaviors necessary for excavating such prey. This study explores this discordance by investigating the prey excavation and capture kinematics of R. bonasus. Based on the basal suction feeding mechanism in this group of fishes, we hypothesized a hydraulic method of excavation. As expected, prey capture kinematics of R. bonasus show marked differences relative to other elasmobranchs, relating to prey excavation and use of the cephalic lobes (modified anterior pectoral fin extensions unique to derived myliobatiform rays). Prey are excavated by repeated opening and closing of the jaws to fluidize surrounding sand. The food item is then enclosed laterally by the depressed cephalic lobes, which transport it toward the mouth for ingestion by inertial suction. Unlike in most sharks, upper jaw protrusion and mandibular depression are simultaneous. During food capture, the ray's spiracle, mouth, and gill slit movements are timed such that water enters only the mouth (e.g., the spiracle closes prior to prey capture and reopens immediately following). Indigestible parts are then hydraulically winnowed from edible prey portions, by mouth movements similar to those used in excavation, and ejected through the mouth. The unique sensory/manipulatory capabilities of the cephalic lobes, as well as the cownose ray's hydraulic excavation/winnowing behaviors and suction feeding, make this species an effective benthic predator, despite its epibenthic lifestyle.  相似文献

Synopsis Ecomorphological correlates were sought among ten species of distantly related subtropical seagrass fishes. Morphometric data associated with feeding and microhabitat utilization were compared by principal components analysis, cluster analysis, and canonical correspondence analysis to dietary data. Morphology was generally a poor predictor of diet except for a group of mid-water planktotrophic filter feeders. Separation of the species along morphological axes appears to be related more to microhabitat utilization resulting in three major groups: (1) a group of planktotrophic, mid-water fishes specialized for cruising and seeking out evasive prey characterized by a compressed fusiform body, forked caudal fin, long, closely spaced gill rakers, short to intermediate! length pectoral fin, pointed pectoral fin, large lateral eye, short head, and a terminal or subterminal mouth; (2) slow swimming, less maneuverable epibenthic fishes that pick or suck their prey off the substrate. They are united by more rounded caudal and pectoral fins, and short or no gill rakers; and (3) a group of more mobile and maneuverable epibenthic foragers characterized by a more compressed, sub-gibbose body, long, pointed pectoral fins, forked caudal fins, large lateral eyes, subterminal mouth, and greater jaw protrusibility. Cases of convergence in trophic and microhabitat utilization characters were apparent in some of the groups.  相似文献

Four species of Paragalaxias (Galaxiidae) inhabit lakes of submontane Tasmania. P. dissimilis and P. eleotroides are sympatric in Great Lake and Shannon Lagoon; P. mesotes occurs in Arthurs and Woods lakes; P. julianus is found in lakes of the Western Plateau. Phylogenetic analysis shows the genus to be monophyletic, and indicates that P. julianus is the sister-species of the other three species, and that P. dissimilis is the sister-species of P. mesotes and P. eleotroides. Morphological comparisons show that the two sympatric species have diverged from the others, with P. dissimilis becoming limnetic/pelagic (terminal mouth, eyes more lateral with convex interorbital, symmetrical paddle-shaped pectoral fins with rays divided once, forked tail, many, long gill rakers, large swimbladder), while P. eleotroides has become benthic (downturned mouth, eyes high on head with interorbital convex, rhomboidal pectoral fins with upper rays longest, rays divided twice, truncated tail, few, short gill rakers, small swim bladder). This character divergence is consistent with the tenets of character displacement except that it remains unproved that it has been driven by resource competition. The ecomorphological divergence parallels that described for species pairs in northern cool temperate lakes with fish faunas of low species richness, particularly in threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus.  相似文献

This fish produces foam, while swimming belly-up, by pumping water over the gills and using their pelvic fins to mix water and mucus. The feeding performances of two heterochronic morphs of the Alpine newt Triturus alpestris were investigated in laboratory experiments. Although both morphs are able to feed in the aquatic habitat, the hydrodynamics of prey capture differ between morphs. In paedomorphs water sucked with prey is expelled behind the mouth through gill bars. In metamorphs, water is expelled by the mouth as gill slits are closed. Feeding performance was better in paedomorphs than in metamorphs when foraging on aquatic crustaceans, but paedomorphs were less successful when foraging on terrestrial invertebrates caught at the water surface. These differences in prey capture success related to prey type allow the two morphs to use specific resources in their aquatic habitat. These results are consistent with previous studies that showed diet differentiation between morphs in natural populations. Such resource partitioning is a factor favouring the maintenance of facultative paedomorphosis in natural populations.  相似文献

The larval ultrastructure of Brycon gouldingi related to swimming and feeding from hatching to total yolk absorption is described from scanning electron micrographs. Newly hatched larvae (time zero) had no mouth opening, undefined optic vesicles, an olfactory plate visible as a shallow depression, rudimentary gill arches, neural groove, embryonic fin and a primary neuromast in the dorsal region of the head. At the time of yolk absorption, 55 h post hatching, the larvae presented an optic vesicle comprising an optic cup and crystalline lens; a mouth with tongue, tapered teeth and taste buds; a ciliated olfactory cavity; branched gill arches; filled neural groove signalling central nervous system development; caudal, pectoral, dorsal and anal fins; and neuromasts distributed throughout the head and body. These characters are related to prey capture and swimming ability, key aspects of survival during the larval stage. The results of this study provide important information for exploitation and aquaculture of B. gouldingi.  相似文献

The feeding performance of two morphs of a trophically polymorphic fish, the arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus, feeding on zooplankton, was studied in the laboratory. Limnetic morphs, with a fusiform body, terminal mouth, short pectoral fins, and relatively long and dense gill rakers, fed at significantly higher rates on Daphnia and Cyclops than did benthic morphs. The benthic morphs were characterized by a chunky body form, subterminal mouth, long pectoral fins, and relatively short and spaced-out gill rakers. The limnetic morphs attacked the prey at significantly higher rates and were more successful in capture. Benthic morphs were more reluctant to start feeding on zooplankton and reaction time was longer than in limnetic morphs. In the absence as well as presence of zooplankton food, the position of the two morphs in the aquaria differed markedly. The results agree with dietary differences found in field-collected fish. The limnetic morphs consume zooplankton, whereas benthic morphs specialize on Lymnaea gastropods. The results suggest that benthic morphs are phenotypically inferior at using the pelagic food niche. This implies that the current role of competitive or predatory interactions in segregating the morphs may be minor.  相似文献

Thirty-six specimens of hybrid between the cyprinid species Alburnus albidus and Leuciscus cephalus cabeda were recognized from samples collected from five rivers in southern Italy. In the Alento river hybridization was marked and in a single sample of 66 specimens, 23 were found to be hybrids. The identification of hybrids is easy due to the combination of intermediate characters such as body pigmentation, gill rakers, branched rays of anal and pelvic fins, and some proportional measurements. The growth rate of hybrids is intermediate between the parental forms. Males are more numerous than females.  相似文献

An investigation of the feeding behavior of the acorn worm Harrimania planktophilus suggests a novel form of enteropneust feeding with significant phylogenetic implications. H. planktophilus is a holoinfaunal worm that feeds on deposited sediments, and filter feeds on suspended particles in interstitial pore water. To visualize the particle retention behavior involved in filter feeding, adult animals were held in chilled seawater under low light and fed food coloring and fluorescent particles. The behavior was recorded by videography. Most particles ingested were drawn into the mouth by an incurrent flow created by cilia on the pharyngeal bars and without the aid of mucus. Particles that passed freely through the gill pores averaged 3.04 microm, whereas particles retained in the gut and defecated in the feces averaged 13.9 microm. Food coloring entered the mouth and was pumped through the pharynx at a rate of 0.5-2.0 mm/s. There is no evidence of an endostyle or mucus-net capture mechanism in H. planktophilus, but instead particles are filtered and manipulated by a dense covering of cilia on the pharyngeal gill bars. This study suggests that the filter-feeding pharynx is not an innovation of the chordates, but evolved prior to the evolutionary divergence of the hemichordate-echinoderm clade from the chordates.  相似文献

The ontogeny of the developmental stages of the hake Merluccius hubbsi is described. Fish larvae and post-transitional juveniles were collected in the Nor-Patagonian area from 1989 to 2004. The opening of the mouth and the pigmentation of the eyes are coincident with yolk resorption, finishing the yolk-sac stage. This species presents pigmentation on the head, trunk and tail typical of gadiform larvae. Pectoral fin development is completed during the transformation stage. The post-transitional juvenile stage begins when the fin-ray complements are complete and squamation begins. The fins become fully formed in the following sequence: pelvic fins, first dorsal fin, second dorsal and anal fins together, caudal fin and pectoral fins. The caudal complex is totally developed in larvae of 22·0–23·0 mm standard lengths ( L S) and all vertebral elements are first observed in larvae of 8·5 mm L S. The rate of development of M. hubbsi observed in this study could be faster than the rates reported for other species of Merluccius by different authors.  相似文献

In teleost fishes, the position of the pelvic fins shift during evolution; this positional shift seems to have diversified their locomotion and feeding behavior, thereby expanding the habitats of these fishes. Thus, such a positional shift of the pelvic fins is one of the significant features of teleost fishes from evolutionary, embryological, and taxonomic viewpoints, but no studies to date have investigated the mechanism for the rostral shift of the pelvic fins from the anal region in teleosts. Examining the fate of the prospective pelvic fin cells of the zebrafish Danio rerio and the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus embryos demonstrates that the prospective pelvic fin cells are originally located near the anus, as seen in tetrapods, but their position shifts with respect to the body trunk after its protrusion from the yolk surface. In this article, we highlight such recent findings and discuss the mechanisms of pelvic fin evolution among teleost fishes.  相似文献
