ABSTRACT

Australian fur seals Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus are colonial breeding animals forming dense social groups during the breeding season. During this time, males establish and defend territories through physical conflicts, stereotyped posturing and vocalisations. While vocalisations are suggested to play an important role in male recognition systems, it has received little attention. Recordings of nine adult male Australian fur seals were made during the 2000 and 2001 breeding seasons at Kanowna Island (39° 10′S, 146° 18′ E), Bass Strait, Australia. The in-air bark vocalisations of territory-holding males were used to characterise the Bark Call and to determine whether males produce individually distinct calls, which could be used as a basis for vocal recognition. Seventeen frequency and temporal variables were measured from a total of 162 barks from nine individual males. The Bark Series was more reliably classified (83%) to the correct caller compared to the Bark Unit. This was assigned with less certainty (68%), although the classification was still relatively high. Findings from this study indicate that there is sufficient stereotypy within individual calls, and sufficient variation between them, to enable vocal recognition in male Australian fur seals.  相似文献

Geographic variation of vocal behaviour may be reflective of genetic, cultural and ecological differences between locations. Such differences have been previously reported in six pinnipeds, including Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii). This study investigated whether the acoustic characteristics of airborne Weddell seal mother and pup ‘contact’ calls vary geographically between the Vestfold Hills and McMurdo Sound. From each location, 72 mother and 120 pup calls were analysed, with 11 acoustic characteristics measured. MANOVA and Discriminant function analysis (DFA) identified significant differences in several fundamental frequency characteristics. The cross-validated DFA classified greater than 60% of mother and pup vocalisations to the correct location. For novel calls, the probabilities of correctly classifying these percentages by chance are low. Additionally, ordinal logistic regression identified significant differences in the maximum energy distribution of mother and pup vocalisations. For pups, this variation is likely the result of genetic differences between the two populations. Nevertheless, results support suggestions that, when compared with underwater repertoire differences, airborne within-call differences are less efficient at identifying Weddell seal breeding populations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Coruros Spalacopus cyanus, social fossorial rodents from Chile, use a complex acoustic repertoire with eleven different true vocalisations and one mechanical sound in various behavioural contexts. The complex of contact calls is particularly well differentiated. Juvenile coruros produced six true vocalisations of which four were structurally identical to adult calls. One vocalisation had components of two adult sounds and one occurred only in juvenile animals. Certain calls from the adult repertoire were lacking. The frequencies of sounds of juveniles were considerably higher than those of adults, with many sounds reaching the ultrasonic range. Nevertheless, pure ultrasonic sounds were not recorded.

The frequencies of the analysed sounds of coruros extended from 0.17 to 20.33 kHz with dominant frequency components between 0.17 and 10 kHz. The acoustic properties of calls are suitable for transmission above and below ground, thus providing further indirect evidence that coruros are not strictly confined to an underground way of life. Indeed, the great variability of frequency ranges, with lower frequencies always being included, reflects a specialisation for communication in variable acoustic environments.

The most distinctive and unique vocalisation of coruros is the long duration musical trilling (lasting up to two minutes), which is a long-distance call emitted in alarm and arousal contexts. Recordings of this call from natural burrows in the field in Chile showed similar structural features to vocalisations from captive colonies in the laboratory.

Our findings provide a further example of matching physical properties of vocalisations to the acoustic conditions of the habitat. However, vocalisations in subterranean rodents consist almost exclusively of short-distance calls, the trilling of coruros being the notable exception. Since the selective pressure of the acoustic environment upon the evolution of short-distance vocalisations is probably minimal, we suggest that during their evolution, subterranean mammals have matched their vocalisations primarily to their hearing range and not directly to the acoustics underground. Hearing probably has been the primary target of natural selection, serving not only for communication but also for detection of predators (and, in carnivores, of prey).  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We examined vocalisations of a solitary subterranean rodent, the Silvery Mole-rat Heliophobius argenteocinereus (Bathyergidae). Seven true vocalisations and one mechanical vocalisation were identified. The main frequencies of the analysed sounds (0.34–13.17 kHz) match to a great extent the frequency range suitable for transmission in underground burrows. Due to the narrow frequency range of vocalisations, motivation is predominantly expressed by the rate of tonality rather than by frequency changes. The vocal repertoire of the Silvery Mole-rat perfectly matches to Morton's MS rules, i.e. that low-frequency and harsh vocalisations indicate hostility whereas high tonal calls signalise appeasement or fear. In comparison with social species, this solitary bathyergid produces fewer calls. It lacks contact and alarm calls, but has a rich repertoire of mating calls (mating ends with duet vocalization of male and female). Acoustic signals seem to play a major role in lowering natural aggressiveness during the mating period.  相似文献

  1. In the context of global amphibian decline, monitoring and restoration programmes are important. Acoustic monitoring is a possible approach for underwater vocalising species like the rapidly declining European common spadefoot toad (Pelobates fuscus). In this study, our aim was to design a dedicated software detector to be used in combination with programmable audio recorders to process the large amount of data generated by long-term acoustic monitoring and to use it for investigating the seasonal and circadian patterns of P. fuscus vocal activity.
  2. The software detector targets advertisement calls of the species. Based on acoustic analysis of that call, we developed a detector that utilises both frequency and time features of the calls. Data collected during three breeding seasons in four known or potential P. fuscus breeding sites of north-eastern France were used to build a ground truth in order to test the performance of the detector. Then, we used the detector for analysing four acoustic monitoring campaigns conducted in two different sites over two breeding seasons to gain insight into the seasonal and circadian patterns of vocal activity of this species.
  3. Evaluation of the P. fuscus call detector against a ground truth returned false-positive rates below 1.5% and true-positive rates ranging from 53% to 73%. These figures are compatible with long-term monitoring of the presence of the species. Running the software detector on standard hardware, the computation time for post-processing the 360 hr of a typical 3-month monitoring campaign was less than 1 day.
  4. The seasonal pattern of P. fuscus underwater vocal activity is more complex than previously recognised. Over the whole ostensible 3-month breeding season, the actual time window for vocalising and breeding can last from a few days up to several weeks and may be split into clearly distinct episodes. When vocalisations occurred at both night- and daytime, the circadian vocal activity of P. fuscus occasionally proceeded uninterrupted for 24 hr but usually a several hour lull occurred immediately prior to sunset. When vocalisations occurred at both night- and daytime, the vocal activity pattern followed a bimodal distribution with a nocturnal highest peak of activity and a second peak occurring in the morning.
  5. Our results demonstrate that it is feasible to monitor presence of P. fuscus in north-eastern France using a dedicated software detector combined with programmable audio recorders. Based on the outcomes of the detector applied to long-term audio data sets, we reveal temporal patterns of the vocal activity of the species and subsequently provide recommendations for attended and unattended acoustic monitoring.

ABSTRACT

Underwater vocalisations of Weddell seals Leptonychotes weddellii were recorded approximately 1400 km apart at Casey and Davis, Antarctica. Recordings were made during the 1992 and 1997 breeding seasons at Davis and during the 1997 season at Casey. Two observers independently analysed four attributes (start and end frequency, duration and number of elements) of narrow bandwidth calls from each location and time. There were few observer differences when the calls were grouped into four broad types (Trills, Descending Whistles, Ascending Whistles and Mews). Ascending Whistles and Mews were rare at Casey but common at Davis. Descending Whistles occurred significantly more often at Davis. Except for Trills, discriminant function analyses indicated less variation between the call attributes at Davis in 1992 and 1997 than between either of the Davis data sets and that from Casey. Vocalisation differences between Weddell seals from different areas can be detected by measuring common attributes of narrow bandwidth calls.  相似文献

Conspecific broadcasts are effective to increase detection of owls. To determine the most appropriate time of the year to survey owls, we played conspecific owl vocalisations monthly in a temperate rainforest of southern Chile. From 12 broadcast points surveyed we recorded detections of Glaucidium nana, Strix rufipes and Tyto alba. Glaucidium nana presented a bimodal detection curve throughout the year and we recorded two regular vocalisations in response to broadcasting: contact pair call and territorial call. Strix rufipes and T. alba both showed a peak of detection between February and May. Strix rufipes presented three vocalisations: territorial call, contact pair call and female contact pair call while T. alba uttered two vocalisations: territorial call and twittering call. We recommend surveys during the end of the breeding season (austral summer–autumn) when detection is higher in most owls. Surveys should also take into consideration the variability of the vocalisations and include covariates in monitoring to evaluate occupancy/detection models.  相似文献

Glacio-marine fjords occur widely at high latitudes and have been extensively studied in the Arctic, where heavy meltwater inputs and sedimentation yield low benthic faunal abundance and biodiversity in inner-middle fjords. Fjord benthic ecosystems remain poorly studied in the subpolar Antarctic, including those in extensive fjords along the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). Here we test ecosystem predictions from Arctic fjords on three subpolar, glacio-marine fjords along the WAP. With seafloor photographic surveys we evaluate benthic megafaunal abundance, community structure, and species diversity, as well as the abundance of demersal nekton and macroalgal detritus, in soft-sediment basins of Andvord, Flandres and Barilari Bays at depths of 436–725 m. We then contrast these fjord sites with three open shelf stations of similar depths. Contrary to Arctic predictions, WAP fjord basins exhibited 3 to 38-fold greater benthic megafaunal abundance than the open shelf, and local species diversity and trophic complexity remained high from outer to inner fjord basins. Furthermore, WAP fjords contained distinct species composition, substantially contributing to beta and gamma diversity at 400–700 m depths along the WAP. The abundance of demersal nekton and macroalgal detritus was also substantially higher in WAP fjords compared to the open shelf. We conclude that WAP fjords are important hotspots of benthic abundance and biodiversity as a consequence of weak meltwater influences, low sedimentation disturbance, and high, varied food inputs. We postulate that WAP fjords differ markedly from their Arctic counterparts because they are in earlier stages of climate warming, and that rapid warming along the WAP will increase meltwater and sediment inputs, deleteriously impacting these biodiversity hotspots. Because WAP fjords also provide important habitat and foraging areas for Antarctic krill and baleen whales, there is an urgent need to develop better understanding of the structure, dynamics and climate-sensitivity of WAP subpolar fjord ecosystems.  相似文献

Dormant life stages are important strategies for many aquatic organisms. The formation of resting stages will provide a refuge from unfavourable conditions in the water column, and their successive accumulation in the benthos will constitute a genetic reservoir for future planktonic populations. We have determined the genetic structure of a common bloom‐forming diatom, Skeletonema marinoi, in the sediment and the plankton during spring, summer and autumn two subsequent years (2007–2009) in Gullmar Fjord on the Swedish west coast. Eight polymorphic microsatellite loci were used to assess the level of genetic differentiation and the respective gene diversity of the two different habitats. We also determined the degree of genetic differentiation between the seed banks inside the fjord and the open sea. The results indicate that Gullmar Fjord has one dominant endogenous population of S. marinoi, which is genetically differentiated from the open sea population. The fjord population is encountered in the plankton and in the sediment. Shifts from the dominant population can happen, and in our study, two genetically differentiated plankton populations, displaying reduced genetic diversity, occurred in September 2007 and 2008. Based on our results, we suggest that sill fjords maintain local long‐lived and well‐adapted protist populations, which continuously shift between the planktonic and benthic habitats. Intermittently, short‐lived and mainly asexually reproducing populations can replace the dominant population in the water column, without influencing the genetic structure of the benthic seed bank.  相似文献

The vocal displays of male Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) are thought to be sexually selected traits. To clarify the specific call types involved in breeding, as well as to provide basic information on the vocalisations of Indian peafowl, we conducted monthly daytime recordings in a large feral population in Japan. Based on 13,420 records, we identified seven different call types made only by males and six alarm calls uttered by both sexes. Furthermore, we found seasonal and diurnal changes in the calling activity of peafowl. Three of the male call types (keow, ka and hoot-call) were particularly important for breeding, as sexually mature males produced them only during the breeding season, in a similar diurnal pattern to other breeding behaviours. The effects of suspended sediments on the composition of wall communities in Alaskan fjords were investigated by quantitative assessment of underwater photo-quadrats. In fjords with actively retreating tidewater glaciers, suspended sediment levels were extremely high at the heads and were exponentially lower at the mouths. Fjords without glaciers had low suspended sediment levels throughout. The per cent cover and number of species were lowest where sedimentation was highest, at the heads of glacial fjords. Here the wall communities were dominated by a sparse cover of small serpulid worms. Richer communities comprising mostly algae, sponges, hydroids, bryozoans, tunicates and brachiopods were found in fjords without glaciers, and at the mouths of glacial fjords. There was a positive correlation between water clarity and community composition along a gradient from heads to the mouths of fjords with high suspended sediment levels. Several nuclear RFLP loci have been discovered recently that exhibit extensive allele frequency variation among Norwegian coastal and north-east Arctic populations of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua. One of these polymorphisms was detected by hybridizing an anonymous cDNA clone (GM798) against genomic DNA digested with the restriction enzyme DraI. This cDNA clone has now been sequenced and identified as synaptophysin (Syp I), an integral synaptic vesicle membrane protein. Primers were constructed that amplify an intron of the Syp I gene that is polymorphic for the DraI site, thus making it possible to use a PCR-based assay to score the polymorphism. A total of 965 individuals sampled from the Barents Sea, coastal areas and fjords in northern Norway have been analysed for this polymorphism. The results confirm that highly significant differences exist between NE Arctic and coastal cod at the Syp I locus. A cluster analysis revealed a deep split between coastal and Arctic populations and hierarchical F-statistics indicated that about 40% of the total variation was attributable to differences between Arctic and coastal groups. The temporal stability of allele frequencies was assessed by comparing Syp I allele frequencies among samples of juveniles (0 group) captured at specific locations in fjords in consecutive years and among samples of adults and juveniles collected from the same fjord. Samples of juveniles collected in 1994 and 1995 in Malangen were genetically indistinguishable whereas juveniles sampled from Dønnesfjord and Ullsfjorden over the same 2-year period exhibited significant differences. Adults and 0-group individuals collected from the same fjord were found to be genetically indistinguishable in Malangen, but not in Balsfjorden. In addition to detecting large differences among Arctic and coastal groups, the Syp I locus suggests that genetic heterogeneity exists among resident populations of cod in different fjords and that gene flow among populations throughout northern Norway may be considerably lower than previously believed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In order to increase understanding of African elephant vocal communication and to standardise the terminology used to describe vocalisations, this study examined acoustic and temporal characteristics of 983 vocalisations from 2 male and 6 female captive African elephants. Recording collars were used to monitor vocalisations and videotape to simultaneously record behaviour, allowing for unambiguous attribution of sounds to individuals, even in close proximity. Eight acoustically distinct categories of calls were defined in terms of structural characteristics; two of these categories are described for the first time. Low-frequency vocalisations containing infrasonic components were predominant in this localised communication context and showed a gradation of variation in acoustic structure and duration. Most calls were part of temporally closed exchanges between individuals and coincided with short-distance interactions. In addition, male-female choruses and non-musth rumbles from males were documented, suggesting that the African elephant vocal repertoire may be more complex than previously reported.  相似文献

Abstract: The largest aggregations of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) in Alaska, USA, haul out on floating ice in tidewater glacial fjords. Seals use these fjords in peak numbers during the critical periods of pupping, breeding, and molting when visits by tour ships also peak. Documented and suspected declines of harbor seals in fjords with rising vessel traffic underscore the need to better understand possible impacts, particularly in areas where ship visits have risen substantially in the past 2 decades. We examined the interruption of haul-out bouts of harbor seals due to approaching cruise ships in Disenchantment Bay, Alaska. We conducted observations from cruise ships and focused on disturbance of seals as evidenced by seals flushing into the water from the floating ice on which they rested. We investigated rate of flushing in relation to vessel distance, approach angle, group size, and seal type (mother, pup, or other). Using a survival-regression analysis, we found that the risk of disturbing harbor seals increased when ships approached within 500 m; seals approached as close as 100 m were 25 times more likely to enter the water than seals 500 m from a ship. Seals were 4 times more prone to enter the water when ships were approaching directly rather than passing abeam. Seals responded similarly regardless of group size or seal type. Energetic models indicated a potential to disrupt energy balance and cause thermal stress in disturbed pups if they spent >50% of their time in ice-chilled water. Studies at non-glacial sites suggest that pups spend 40–70% of their time in the water. Voluntary guidelines for approaching seals in Alaska recommend that cruise ships approach ≥91 m (100 yards), a distance at which we show 90% of seals would flush into the water. Our findings indicate a need to develop regulations to maintain a 500-m separation between cruise ships and seals in all Alaskan glacial fjords.  相似文献

Although non‐linear phenomena are common in human and non‐human animal vocalisations, their functional relevance remains poorly understood. One theory posits that non‐linear phenomena generate unpredictability in vocalisations, which increases the auditory impact of vocal signals, and makes animals less likely to habituate to call repetition. Female koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) produce vocal signals when they reject male copulation attempts that contain relatively high levels of non‐linear phenomena, and thus may function as attention grabbing vocal signals during the breeding season. To test this hypothesis, we used playback experiments: firstly, to determine whether female rejection calls induce heightened behavioural responses in free‐ranging male koalas during the breeding season, and secondly, to examine how the relative amount of non‐linear phenomena in rejection calls influences male behavioural response. The results show that male koalas look for longer towards speakers broadcasting playback sequences of male bellows followed by a series of female rejection calls than those broadcasting only male bellows. In addition, female rejection call sequences with more subharmonics, higher harmonics‐to‐noise ratios, and less biphonation produced the greatest male looking responses. Our findings support the hypothesis that female koala rejection calls function to grab male attention during the breeding season, and indicate that subharmonics are the main acoustic feature that increases the auditory impact of these vocal signals.  相似文献

The role of zoobenthos in energy flow in two shallow lakes   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:2
Lindegaard  Claus 《Hydrobiologia》1994,(1):313-322
Net production of zoobenthos in two shallow and eutrophic lakes, i.e. the S-basin of Mývatn, Iceland (maximum depth 4.2 m, mean depth 2.3 m) and Hjarbæk Fjord, Denmark (maximum depth 6.5 m, mean depth 1.9 m) were calculated as 878 and 1093 kJ m-2 yr-1, respectively. The zoobenthos in both lakes was dominated by Chironomidae (Diptera) living partly as filtrators feeding on suspended particles (phytoplankton) and partly as surface feeders foraging on benthic algae and/or seston. Respiration and consumption were estimated from the literature. Net production efficiency averaged 0.41 and 0.48 in Hjarbæk Fjord and Mývatn, respectively. Ingestion was dominated by herbivorous chironomids, while detritivorous tubificids were insignificant. Zoobenthic production made up 86% of total secondary production (zooplankton plus zoobenthos) in both lakes. The trophic efficiency between net primary production and benthic net secondary production was 8% and 11% in Hjarbæk Fjord and Lake Mývatn S-basin, respectively.  相似文献

Life-history traits of kite skates Dipturus chilensis were examined from two regions (c. 2286 km apart) in the sheltered fjords and channels of southern Chile. A total of 482 and 403 specimens were collected from the southern fjords (c. 42–46° S) and the fjords of Chilean Patagonia (c. 51–54° S), from September 2003 to 2004, respectively. Vertebra marginal increment analysis indicated an annual deposition of growth rings which was completed during the winter months. For each region, von Bertalanffy growth parameters showed that females attained a larger asymptotic size, L, had a lower growth coefficient, K, and lived longer than males. Growth analysis indicated that D. chilensis from the Patagonian fjords had a longer life span (females: 22 v. 21 years; males 19 v. 17 years), attained a larger L (females: 150 v. 136 cm; males: 122 v. 118 cm total length, LT) and had a lower K value (females: 0·087 v. 0·104; males: 0·110 v. 0·116) than their counterparts in the southern fjords. Comparisons with previous studies indicated that D. chilensis from both southern and Patagonian sheltered fjords had larger L, and grew more slowly than their counterparts from central-southern Chile (L= 119–123 cm, K= 0·123–0·127), suggesting latitudinal variations in growth. Females attained sexual maturity later than males in both regions. For both sexes, lengths at 50% maturity (L50%) between regions were similar (females: c. 103 cm; males: c. 87 cm LT); however, D. chilensis from Patagonia appeared to mature 1 year earlier (females: 13 v. 14 years; males: 10 v. 11 years). Specimens from Patagonia had a lower ovarian fecundity than those from the southern fjords. An increase in the proportion of mature females and males during summer, suggests that the reproductive peak occurs in this season, and no regional differences were found. The size of the egg cases increased with maternal LT and these were longer in Patagonia. The information provided here represents the first evidence of regional variations in life-history traits for elasmobranchs in the south-eastern Pacific.  相似文献

In avian systems, nest predation is one of the most significant influences on reproductive success. Selection for mechanisms and behaviours to minimise predation rates should be favoured. To avoid predation, breeding birds can often deter predators through active nest defence or by modifying behaviours around the nest (e.g. reducing feeding rates and vocalisations). Birds might also benefit from concealing nests or placing them in inaccessible locations. The relative importance of these strategies (behaviour vs. site selection) can be difficult to disentangle and may differ according to life history. Tropical birds are thought to experience higher rates of predation than temperate birds and invest less energy in nest defence. We monitored a population of crimson finches (Neochmia phaeton), in the Australian tropics, over two breeding seasons. We found no relationship between adult nest defence behaviour (towards a model reptile predator) and the likelihood of nest success. However, nest success was strongly related to the visibility of the nest and the structure of the vegetation. We found no evidence that adult nest building decisions were influenced by predation risk; individuals that re‐nested after a predation event did not build their nest in a more concealed location. Therefore, predator avoidance, and hence nest success, appears to be largely due to chance rather than due to the behaviour of the birds or their choice of nesting sites. To escape high predation pressures, multiple nesting attempts both within and between seasons may be necessary to increase reproductive success. Alternatively, birds may be limited in their nest‐site options; that is, high‐quality individuals dominate quality nest sites.  相似文献
