The human sciences are now celebrating the return of the Subject. However, as a form of resistance to science, the issue of subjectivity justifies a methodological resort to a phenomenological posture. This posture consists in “seeing” and “showing” the experience of foundations. In Arthur Tatossian’s distinction between Subject and subjectivity, the Subject carries out the synthesis of forms in which the subjectivity expresses and alienates itself. These forms include: the Self, the consciousness, the inner mind, etc. Subjectivity is what makes the Subject possible. Subjectivity is time, space, the body and the Other, and is shaped by time into a living present, by space into a common place, by the body into flesh, and by the Other as alterity. In psychiatric disorders, the patient fails to be a Subject. Whoever he or she is, a Self without subjectivity, as with a melancholic or a maniac, or subjectivity without Self, as with a schizophrenic, the issue of human identity arises. The central problem of the human condition, which is at the heart of psychiatric disorders, is the challenge of being a Self while retaining a degree of subjectivity. This in turn merges with another central problem: that of freedom. Subjectivity is the other face of freedom because it is the power to create meaning.  相似文献

This article examines how the "non-ill," often formal or informal caregivers, structure their relationships with "the ill," using as a specific example the disease of AIDS; and as a specific analytic tool selections of fictional writing. An introductory rationale explores why literature may be well-suited to helping us understand value-laden issues such as relationship. Discussion then focuses on how the professional and personal Self is identified and defined in relation to the suffering Other, through the development of concepts such as threat and boundary work. The concluding section suggests alternative relational models derived from more fluid and permeable definitions of Self and Other.  相似文献

This article proposes the possibility of a neo-Boasian anthropology conceived at the intersection of Foucauldian genealogy, Boasian historicism, and the epistemic rethinking of the discipline's Self/Other binary. Shifting from a perspective of posing the ethnographic object as Other toward a Boasian conception of the past as the principal site of inquiry, the piece thus advocates an anthropological project grounded in the history of the present. This conception, it is argued, can overcome several of the dilemmas currently facing the discipline, the awkward status of "native anthropology" foremost among them.  相似文献

The present discourse on Islam can be regarded as a cultural racist discourse. The construction of Muslims as the ‘Other’ necessarily implies constructing a ‘Self’. This article deals with the dialectical process of reification by studying Dutch female converts to Islam. Ruptures in the relationships between converts and their relatives can illuminate Dutch national and cultural identity. Converts change important markers of identity such as name and appearance. They also trespass Dutch values connected to cultural practice such as food, feasting and funerals. The most important construction of Dutch national and cultural identity vis-à-vis converts is related to sex and gender. Veiled Muslimas in particular express that they cannot longer be ‘real Dutch’. Veiling is subordination and oppressed women are the ‘ultimate others’ of Dutch self-perception.  相似文献

It is well known that kinesthetic illusions can be induced by stimulation of several sensory systems (proprioception, touch, vision…). In this study we investigated the cerebral network underlying a kinesthetic illusion induced by visual stimulation by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in humans. Participants were instructed to keep their hand still while watching the video of their own moving hand (Self Hand) or that of someone else''s moving hand (Other Hand). In the Self Hand condition they experienced an illusory sensation that their hand was moving whereas the Other Hand condition did not induce any kinesthetic illusion. The contrast between the Self Hand and Other Hand conditions showed significant activation in the left dorsal and ventral premotor cortices, in the left Superior and Inferior Parietal lobules, at the right Occipito-Temporal junction as well as in bilateral Insula and Putamen. Most strikingly, there was no activation in the primary motor and somatosensory cortices, whilst previous studies have reported significant activation in these regions for vibration-induced kinesthetic illusions. To our knowledge, this is the first study that indicates that humans can experience kinesthetic perception without activation in the primary motor and somatosensory areas. We conclude that under some conditions watching a video of one''s own moving hand could lead to activation of a network that is usually involved in processing copies of efference, thus leading to the illusory perception that the real hand is indeed moving.  相似文献

Conclusion I have tried, here, to raise a number of questions which challenge the normal practice of Anthropology and I have tried to show why such a challenge needs to be formulated at all. It should be clear by now that the initial step — without which the effort to hear the Other's challenge would have been hopeless from the beginning — must be to seek forms of social action which do not silence the Other's full voice at the outset, which do not abstract it from its context, and which allow it to be heard in a critical address to the Self. Only in conceiving such forms and working towards them (and the Other's voice must be heard at the earliest possible stages of this process) can Anthropology and social action in general begin to embrace its own vulnerability. The failure to do this leads, as we have seen, to either a monologue (as with Radin's voice of the Other or the comparativist's voice of the Self) or to an antilogue (as in the relativist approach), where both Self and Other speak but not to one another.The event + dialogue form which the Faqir and I settled on during one stage of my fieldwork suggests an alternative to this practice; but it should be emphasized that this alternative is in no sense meant to be definitive. At best, such a record testifies to several aims: to convey faithfully the power of the Other; to demonstrate the need to seek new forms of the anthropological and the Western project which will recognize their wager aspect and the inherent vulnerability; and to strive for a critical examination of this record's own success or failure in achieving these objectives.The event + dialogue form must thus be looked at not as a model but as a suggestive metaphor for social action and for an Anthropology which embrace their wager character. It cannot provide a model for, just as the confrontation between the West and other human groups is not summarized in all its complexity by Anthropology, and just as fieldwork does not encompass all phases of Anthropology, neither does this record, as event + interview, exactly reflect the fieldwork experience. But the focus on Anthropology, on fieldwork, and on the event + interview, is not arbitrary — it carries a particular significance: it marks the desire to take that moment of the Western encounter with the Other where the Western project is at its most vulnerable, most deeply called into question and to penetrate the shield of immunity that has been constructed around it. If we can begin to do this here, perhaps we can then move toward restituting vulnerability to those other aspects of the confrontation where the Self is even more heavily protected.Kevin Dwyer is an anthropologist, and currently directs Middle East affairs for Amnesty International.  相似文献

The narrow therapeutic index, potential toxicity, and need to monitor plasma concentrations make theophyllines difficult to use. Other drugs provide comparable or better bronchodilator and prophylactic efficacy. In asthma theophyllines should be considered for chronic stable asthma when treatment with optimal doses of inhaled steroids and bronchodilators fails to provide adequate control; for nocturnal asthma; and for prophylaxis and relief of symptoms in children and adults when inhaled treatment cannot be given. In general, theophyllines cannot be recommended for chronic airflow obstruction. A trial of theophylline is reasonable in individual patients whose symptoms remain troublesome despite a trial of steroids and optimal doses of inhaled bronchodilators.  相似文献

Empathy allows us to understand and react to other people''s feelings and sensations; we can more accurately judge another person’s situation when we are aware of his/her emotions. Empathy for pain is a good working model of the behavioral and neural processes involved in empathy in general. Although the influence of perspective-taking processes (notably "Self" vs. "Other") on pain rating has been studied, the impact of the degree of familiarity with the person representing the “Other” perspective has not been previously addressed. In the present study, we asked participants to adopt four different perspectives: "Self", "Other-Most-Loved-Familiar", "Other-Most-Hated-Familiar" and "Other-Stranger". The results showed that higher pain ratings were attributed to the Other-Most-Loved-Familiar perspective than to the Self, Other-Stranger and Other-Most-Hated-Familiar perspectives. Moreover, participants were quicker to rate pain for the Other-Most-Loved-Familiar perspective and the Self-perspective than for the other two perspectives. These results for a perspective-taking task therefore more clearly define the role of familiarity in empathy for pain.  相似文献

A new species of monostiliferoidean nemertean, Tetrastemmafozensis , from the mantle cavity of the bivalve mollusc Scrobicularia plana , in the Ría de Foz, north-western Spain, is described and illustrated. Other nemerteans from the mantle cavity of Scrobicularia collected in Poole Harbour, southern England, are provisionally identified as conspecific with the Ria de Foz material, but show certain anatomical differences whose taxonomic significance cannot at present be assessed.  相似文献

The floral traits of the inflorescences of angiosperms have coevolved to ensure and maximize pollination success. Other factors believed to influence floral architecture are external (for example, ecological) to the inflorescence. In order to understand the relationships between such factors and floral characters, 12 floral traits were measured in 54 species of Araceae. An analysis was performed to determine how these traits are linked to the following: (1) self-pollination capacity; (2) life form (evergreen versus seasonally dormant); (3) climatic conditions; and (4) type of pollinator (i.e. flies, bees, or beetles). A significant difference was found between the pollen to ovule ratio of the species able to self-pollinate and those unable to self-pollinate. Evergreen and tropical aroids produced a larger number of gametes than did seasonally dormant and temperate taxa. Finally, several floral traits, such as pollen volume and number, number of female flowers, and flower sexual type (unisexual or bisexual), showed clear differences between the three pollinator types. Variations in floral traits between the different life forms and climatic conditions are discussed with respect to pollination efficiency and properties of the growing season. The pollen to ovule ratio cannot be considered as an accurate indicator of breeding systems in aroids because of the particular pollination ecology of the family.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 156 , 29–42.  相似文献

Homophily, the tendency for individuals to associate with those who are most similar to them, has been well documented. However, the influence of different kinds of similarity (e.g. relating to age, music taste, ethical views) in initial preferences for a stranger have not been compared. In the current study, we test for a relationship between sharing a variety of traits (i.e. having different kinds of similarity) with a stranger and the perceived likeability of that stranger. In two online experiments, participants were introduced to a series of virtual partners with whom they shared traits, and subsequently carried out activities designed to measure positivity directed towards those partners. Greater numbers of shared traits led to linearly increasing ratings of partner likeability and ratings on the Inclusion of Other in Self scale. We identified several consistent predictors of these two measures: shared taste in music, religion and ethical views. These kinds of trait are likely to be judged as correlates of personality or social group, and may therefore be used as proxies of more in-depth information about a person who might be socially more relevant.  相似文献

Summary Although the retinoblastoma gene has been isolated and sequenced, the difference in penetrance and expressivity among families has not yet been fully explained. Balanced chromosomal insertion involving the 13q14 regions has been shown to account for some families with several unaffected carriers. Since there could be cases with karyotypically undetectable insertions, we tested whether this mechanism was general enough to explain the whole difference in expressivity among families. Using 166 pedigrees, reported in nine series available in the literature (including our own), we conclude that balanced insertion cannot entirely explain the familial data, even if we allow for a reduced viability of unbalanced gametes. Other mechanisms are proposed and discussed in this paper.  相似文献

Abstract— The order of states in a transformation series describes an internested set of synapomorphies. States adjacent to each other in the transformation series thus share a degree of homology not found in the other states. Whether the level of homology is relatively apomorphic is determined by rooting the order with outgroup comparison. The analysis of state order is a homology problem and is solved with a two-step process using similarity and congruence with other characters as criteria. Other methods that have been proposed (e.g. transformation series analysis, non-additive analysis, morphocline analysis, ontogenetic analysis) fail to apply both similarity and congruence, and thus cannot be used independently for determining character state order.  相似文献

Self administered questionnaires completed by 69 out of 100 consecutive drug addicts attending two drug dependence clinics suggested that some private general practitioners were easily persuaded to prescribe controlled drugs. These drugs were usually methadone, dipipanone-cyclizine (Diconal), and methylphenidate (Ritalin). Numbers of new narcotic addicts notified to the Home Office confirmed the practice, which may lead to a severe spread of addiction, as occurred in the 1960s with heroin and cocaine. If the General Medical Council or a tribunal set up in accordance with the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 cannot stop the practice, then the present licensing system should be extended to include all controlled drugs.  相似文献

People’s Belief in a Just World (BJW) plays an important role in coping with misfortune and unfairness. This paper demonstrates that understanding of the BJW concept, and its consequences for behavior, is enhanced if we specify what (or who) the source of justice might be. We introduce a new scale, the 5-Dimensional Belief in a Just Treatment Scale (BJT5), which distinguishes five causal dimensions of BJW (God, Nature, Other People, Self, Chance). We confirm the 5-factor structure of the BJT5. We then address whether the BJW should be considered a uni- and/or multi-dimensional construct and find support for our multi-dimensional approach. Finally, we demonstrate convergent and discriminant validity with respect to important correlates of BJW as well as action in response to important negative life events and societal attitudes. This work illustrates the importance of distinguishing causal dimensions with regard to who distributes justice.  相似文献

Growth of Fusarium sulphureum was inhibited by S-(+)-carvone administered via the gas phase. Under the same conditions, the related fungus F. solani var. coeruleum was not inhibited. In liquid medium, both fungi were found to convert S-(+)-carvone with the same rate, mainly into isodihydrocarvone, isodihydrocarveol and neoisodihydrocarveol. Only a slight difference in the relative amounts of the bioconversion products was observed. Since the bioconversion products did not inhibit the growth of the fungi to the same extent as S-(+)-carvone, the process can be considered as a detoxification mechanism. The bioconversion as such cannot account for the observed difference in growth inhibition.  相似文献

I have previously argued that the other viewing the Self highlights the ramifications of the question “Who are they?” vis-à-vis notions of “Who are we?” and that the answer to the former directly shapes and informs the latter, as Fourth World people are forced to negotiate their identity upon exposure to First World television. In this article, I examine a particular group of subaltern viewers who reassign the roles of self and Other in order to preserve, defend, and construct their own selfhood. Because they look and act differently from those in the mediated mainstream, Navajo television viewers create oppositional identities by understanding themselves first in relation to and then opposed to standardized models. Subverting the televisual gaze is their way of articulating experiences of powerlessness in a white-dominated society as well as a means of communicating a discourse of resistance to the dominant ideology.  相似文献

The lung lining and its surfactant have been studied in one species from each of the amphibian sub-classes Anura, Urodela, and Apoda. The surfactant was studied by observation of bubbles derived from the lungs, the morphology by electron microscopy. Other details of the apodan are also given.
The surfactant layers of Rana temporaria and Ichthyophis (species unknown) resemble one another, being somewhat less stable than that of mammals. That of Triturus vulgaris is even less stable, and shows qualitative differences from the other two. Nevertheless, it can reduce the surface tension to 2 mN/m.
The epithelial cells of amphibian lungs cannot be divided into two clearly defined types, as can those of mammals. Microvilli are present on the alveolar surface of all these cells. In the lungs of Rana and Ichthyophis the lining cells contain numerous lamellated osmiophilic bodies (which are intracellular depots of surfactant); in the former their appearance is mainly cross-barred, in the latter mainly concentric. Similar bodies exist in the lung epithelial cells of Triturus but are relatively rare.  相似文献

It is commonly agreed in the literature on laws of nature that there are at least two necessary conditions for lawhood--that a law must have empirical content and that it must be universal. The main reason offered for the requirement that laws be empirical is as follows: a priori statements are consistent with any imaginable set of observations, so they cannot be informative about the world and therefore they cannot provide explanations. However, we care about laws because we think that laws provide explanations and allow us to make predictions. Thus, if one of the functions of laws is to provide explanations and a priori propositions cannot fulfill this function, they cannot properly be viewed as laws. In this paper, I will aim to show that this argument for the claim that laws must be empirical does not work.  相似文献

The initial glycosylation of MPC 11 gamma 2b heavy chains occurs quantitatively in vivo when the nascent heavy chains reach a size of approximately 38 000 daltons. Nonglycosylated, completed MPC 11 heavy chains cannot be glycosylated in these cells. Other classes of mouse heavy chains (i.e., mu, alpha, and gamma 1) also appear to be glycosylated as nascent chains; nonglycosylated, completed heavy chains cannot be glycosylated by the cell in any of these cases. In contrast, variant MPC 11 cells synthesizing a heavy chain with a carboxy-terminal deletion appear to glycosylate some heavy chains prior to chain completion and some heavy chains after chain completion and release from the polysomes. Similar to the variant MPC 11 cells, MOPC 46B cells (which synthesize a kappa light chain containing an oligosaccharide attached to an asparagine located 28 residues from the amino terminus) glycosylate the majority of light chains after prior to chain completion but also some light chains after chain completion and release from the polysomes. In addition, it appears that, although completed MOPC 46B light chains can be glycosylated if they are present in a monomeric form, they cannot be glycosylated if they are present in a covalent dimeric form.  相似文献
