A new yeast species,Torulopsis bombicola, is described, that produces extracellular hydroxy fatty acid sophorosides. It utilizes relatively few carbon compounds. It forms a mannan having a proton magnetic resonance spectrum similar to the spectra of the galactomannans ofTorulopsis apis, Torulopsis nodaensis andT. magnoliae, but differing from those ofT. gropengiesseri galactomannan andT. apicola mannan.Issued as N.R.C.C. No. 11234.The authors wish to thank Mr. M. Mazurek for the determination of the p.m.r. spectra, and Mr. N. R. Gardner and Mr. R. J. Magus for valuable technical assistance.  相似文献

A new species of Torulopsis Berlese (4) was recovered in 1973 from an acid washed brown forest soil in the province of Navarra. It could not be identified with any hitherto described species of yeast, but on the basis of its both morphological and physiological characteristics it was assigned to the genus Torulopsis Berlese as representative of a new species for which the name of Torulopsis navarrensis is proposed.  相似文献

Torulopsis burgeffiana is placed in the genus Metschnikowia because it has been shown to have a perfect stage corresponding with this genus. Due to the characteristic shape of the ascus and ascospores, T. burgeffiana is to be considered a synonym of M. pulcherrima. The physiological differences which exist between strains are not sufficiently important to maintain a separate species.  相似文献

Vitamin requirements, determined by two different methods, and other nutritional characteristics of 46 psychrophobic and 30 non-psychrophobic yeasts were investigated. Vitamin requirements and induced nutritional imbalances emerged as criteria for definingCandida slooffii. Strains of this species behaved uniformly. Variations in vitamin requirements of strains ofSaccharomyces telluris, Torulopsis bovina andTorulopsis pintolopesii were confirmed. The choline requirement exhibited by several strains (by as many as 86% inS. telluris) was evident on a simple defined medium without methionine, but not on Wickerham's vitamin-free basal medium. The group of choline-requiring strains comprised strains responding similarly to choline or methionine, and some strains growing with choline but not with methionine on short incubation. Other frequently required vitamins were biotin, pantothenate, thiamine, nicotinic acid, pyridoxine, and inositol. Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. A test method to investigate the heat resistance of yeasts has been developed. The method was used to study the heat resistance of 120 yeast strains, representative of the fungal flora in soft drinks and certain acid food products: 35 asporogenous yeast strains ( Brettanomyces, Candida, Kloeckera, Rhodotorula and Torulopsis ) and 85 ascomycetous strains ( Debaryomyces, Hansenula, Kluyveromyces, Lodderomyces, Pichia, Saccharomyces and Saccharomycopsis ) were tested. Generally, asporogenous yeasts were found to be less heat resistant than ascomycetous types. The genus Saccharomyces showed the highest heat resistance, especially strains of the species Sacch. cerevisiae and Sacch. chevalieri . For an evaluation of the practical implications of these results additional studies on environmental factors influencing the heat resistance of ascomycetous yeast species are required.  相似文献

Occurrence and Growth of Yeasts in Yogurts   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文
Yogurts purchased from retail outlets were examined for the presence of yeasts by being plated onto oxytetracycline malt extract agar. Of the 128 samples examined, 45% exhibited yeast counts above 103 cells per g. A total of 73 yeast strains were isolated and identified as belonging to the genera Torulopsis, Kluyveromyces, Saccharomyces, Candida, Rhodotorula, Pichia, Debaryomyces, and Sporobolomyces. Torulopsis candida and Kluyveromyces fragilis were the most frequently isolated species, followed by Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Rhodotorula rubra, Kluyveromyces lactis, and Torulopsis versatilis. The growth of yeasts in yogurts was related to the ability of the yeasts to grow at refrigeration temperatures, to ferment lactose and sucrose, and to hydrolyze milk casein. Most yeast isolates grew in the presence of 100 μg of sorbate and benzoate preservatives per ml. Higher yeast counts from yogurts were obtained when the yogurts were plated onto oxytetracycline malt extract agar than when they were plated onto acidified malt extract agar.  相似文献

Torulopsis bombicola produces extracellular sophorolipids when it is grown on water-insoluble alkanes. Sophorolipids and related model compounds, which were not themselves used for growth, were found to stimulate markedly the growth of T. bombicola on alkanes. This stimulatory effect was restricted to growth on C10 to C20 alkanes, whereas no significantly influence was observed for growth on fatty alcohols, fatty acids, glucose, or glycerol. The nonionic methyl ester of the glycolipid supported the greatest cell yield. However, a number of synthetic nonionic surfactants were unable to replace the glycolipid. When organisms were grown on hexadecane, stimulation of growth by sophorolipids was observed almost exclusively with strains of Torulopsis yeasts. In contrast, the growth of other typical alkane-utilizing yeasts, such as candida and Pichia strains, was inhibited or not affected. It appears that sophorolipids are involved in alkane dissimilation by T. bombicola through an undetermined mechanism.  相似文献

In order to produce microbial cell substances from petroleum, 83 strains of kerosene-utilizing yeasts, as a sole source of carbon, were isolated from 37 materials in contact with petroleum in the petroleum refinery. They could be distributed in either of 15 cultural groups with their colony appearances. Fifteen representative strains in 15 cultural groups were served for determination and identified with the following species: Candida tropicalis, 9 strains; C. guilliermondii, 2 strains; C. intermedia, 2 strains; C. pulcherrima, 1 strains; Torulopsis pinus, 1 strain.

In order to clarify what the ability of hydrocarbon utilization means biologically, 46 standard strains were served for test, of which the following 5 strains could utilize kerosene as a sole source of carbon: Candida albicans IAM 4888; C. arborea IAM 4147; C. lipolytica IAM 4947; C. tropicalis IAM 4862 and IAM 4924. Considering the result, the ability of utilizing kerosene would seem to characterize the genus, but it was not evident that it would characterize the species.

C. tropicalis Pk-233 gave the best cell yield among the above strains when kerosene was employed as a sole source of carbon and moreover, in the production of the cells of Pk-233, employing kerosene as a carbon material was compared with employing glucose.  相似文献

Twenty yeast strains have recently been isolated in pure cultures from natural and industrial sources and identified based mainly on physiological properties. The majority of the strains (15) are alcohologenic belonging to the genus Saccharomyces and comprise two brewer's (beer) yeast strains (S. carlsbergensis= S. uvarum A and B), two baker's yeast strains (S. cerevisiae CA and CP), one spirit yeast strain (S. cerevisiae CF) and ten wine yeast strains (S. cerevisiae var. ellipsoideus = S. ellipsoideus 1, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 9; S. oviformis 2, 5 and 7; and S. uvarum 10). The other 5 yeast strains belong to different species: Kloeckera apiculate, Candida mycoderma (Mycoderma vini), Pichia membranaefaciens, Rhodotorula glutinis and Torulopsis holmii, respectively.  相似文献

Ascospore formation was found in the type strains Torulopsis famata (Harrison) Lodder et Kreger van Rij, T. minor (Pollaci et Nannizi) Lodder and Candida flareri (Ciferri et Redaelli) Langeron et Guerra.
