Raspberry flowers were inoculated in the glasshouse and field with dry conidia of Botrytis cinerea and the fruits derived from them subjected to post-harvest rot tests at c. 20°C and high humidity. Apparently healthy fully-ripe picked fruits derived from inoculated flowers developed grey mould faster than those from non-inoculated flowers in all tests. In the glasshouse experiments, fruits from inoculated tightly closed flower buds rotted more slowly than those from inoculated open flowers or those at later developmental stages. Fruits from inoculated whole flowers rotted more rapidly than those from emasculated flowers; the addition of pollen to emasculated flowers had little effect on post-harvest grey mould. In the dry summer of 1984 no fruits in the field from inoculated whole flowers rotted before ripening, but in the wet season of 1985 pre-harvest grey mould was common and the surviving healthy fruits rotted in c. 1 day after picking. Only minor differences were detected in host susceptibility to post-harvest grey mould in both glasshouse and field tests, the ranking of genotypes varied depending on whether or not flowers had been inoculated. The susceptibility of pistils of 40 Rubus genotypes to infection was examined 7 and 28 days after inoculation of stigmas with dry conidia. Conidia germinated on the stigmas and produced hyphae which grew through transmitting tissues of the styles to infect carpels symptomlessly in 17 red raspberries, one blackberry, two Rubus spp. and one hybrid. No germination occurred on stigmas of cv. Carnival and New York Selection 817.  相似文献

The Gewurztraminer (GW) and the Pinot noir (PN) cultivars of grapevine differ in their sensitivity to environmental factors that can cause flower abscission, cv. GW being the most sensitive. In order to further define the mechanisms leading to abscission, and owing to the importance of sugars in the achievement of sexual organ ontogenesis, we attempted to correlate the chronology of flower ontogenesis with the variations of carbohydrates in the inflorescence. In the vineyard, under optimal climatic conditions, fruit set of cv. GW and cv. PN was 82% and 65%, respectively. The sugar distribution was different in their inflorescences during the entire duration of flower development. Between stages 15 and 17, flowers of GW and PN reached the crucial meiosis stage. At that time, the inflorescences of cv. GW exhibited higher concentrations of starch and sucrose, whereas those of PN presented higher levels of glucose and fructose. Despite higher starch concentrations in GW inflorescences, starch reserves were present in the ovules and anthers of PN but not in those of GW. These results suggest that the higher content of reserve and transport carbohydrates in the inflorescences of GW favour flower development and fruit set under optimal environmental conditions. Furthermore, since meiosis represents a key step of female development, the different sugar concentrations in the inflorescences of the two cultivars at stages 15 and 17 could be related to the sensitivity to flower abscission under climatic stress. In particular, the presence of starch granules in PN ovules and anthers might explain the higher resistance of this cultivar to flower abscission.  相似文献

Summary Flowering cultivars of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. were either cross-pollinated or self-pollinated. Fruit set was observed on 52% of the cross-fertilized flowers, while only 4.6% of the self-fertilized flowers were not abscised. Once during fruit and seed growth, the subtending leaf was exposed to 14CO2, and translocation of labelled photoassimilate was recorded by macro- and microautoradiography. Phloem transport into the raphe occurred in both fruits with fertilized and fruits with non-fertilized ovules. Since empty ovules showed some sink strength, it is assumed that growth of vegetative seed-tissue signalizes the retardation of completion of the abscission process. During fruit growth a considerable amount of starch is deposited in the distal layer of the abscission zone. Part of this starch is consumed during growth of cross-fertilized fruits.  相似文献

A key was produced to describe 10 stages of development of linseed buds, flowers and capsules. Botrytis cinerea conidia germinated more rapidly and germ tubes grew longer on linseed stigmas, petals and mature senescing capsules than on green leaves, sepals and immature capsules. The proportion of conidia which germinated increased and the germ tubes continued growing for longer in the presence of linseed pollen and flower petal extracts. In controlled environment and field experiments, the response of buds, flowers and capsules to inoculation with B. cinerea changed with stage of development; few pre‐flowering buds developed symptoms (brown lesions, then grey mould), but high proportions of flowering and post‐flowering buds did so. Few immature green capsules developed symptoms and the proportion of capsules which developed symptoms increased as they matured. The presence of linseed pollen decreased the incubation period from inoculation with spore suspensions to appearance of B. cinerea symptoms on buds. A disease cycle was produced to suggest the changes in susceptibility of linseed to infection by B. cinerea conidia during bud, flower and capsule development.  相似文献

Prevention of ethylene- and shipping-induced flower abscission is necessary to maintain the quality of both cut flowers and potted plants during handling, transport and retail display. The aims of the present work were to determine the sensitivity of Plectranthus cultivars to applied ethylene, to alleviate ethylene- and shipping-induced flower abscission in intact potted plants using 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), and to investigate the possible causes of dark-induced flower abscission. All cultivars were sensitive to ethylene in a concentration-dependent manner, and complete abscission occurred within 24 h with 1 and 2 μl l 1 ethylene. Unopened buds were more sensitive to applied ethylene, and exhibited greater abscission than open flowers. Ethylene synthesis remained below detection limits at all time points under control and continuous dark conditions. Dark treatment significantly increased flower abscission in Plectranthus cultivars, and like ethylene-induced flower abscission, this could be prevented by continuous 1-MCP treatment. Gene expression of ethylene biosynthetic enzymes ACS and ACO was examined as possible causes for the accelerated flower abscission observed in plants kept in continuous darkness. Expression patterns of ACS and ACO varied between different cultivars of Plectranthus. In some cases, increased expression of ACS and ACO led to increased flower abscission. Gene expression was higher in open flowers when compared to unopened flowers suggesting a cause for the observed preferential shedding of open flowers in some cultivars. Although the cause of dark-induced abscission in Plectranthus remains elusive, it can be effectively controlled by treatment with 1-MCP.  相似文献

Conidia of two isolates of Elsinoe veneta were consistently produced in vitro by a 3-stage culture system in which sparsely sporulating microcolonies produced on corn meal agar were used to ‘seed’ Czapek-Dox V8 juice agar. E. veneta then sporulated on this medium if dises were floated mycelium uppermost on sterile distilled water for 24 h at 25°C. Both isolates also produced microconidia in vitro. Only the growing apices of raspberry canes were susceptible to infection. Of 12 genotypes inoculated in the glasshouse, a red raspberry derivative of Rubus coreanus, EMRS 2769/9, was the most resistant and the black raspberry selection SCRI 815286 and cv. Malling Delight were the most susceptible. Of four red raspberry cultivars inoculated in the field cv. Malling Orion was the most susceptible. Inoculated flowers and developing fruits produced malformed fruits because infected drupelets were smaller or slower to ripen than uninfected ones.  相似文献

A method was developed for the inoculation of flowers of cut roses with conidia of Botrytis cinerea. Flower buds were inoculated by spraying of conidial supensions that were ultrasonicated for 10 s. The differences in susceptibility between 8 rose cvs to infections of isolate Bc-33 and the differences in pathogenicity between 14 5. cinerea isolates to cv. ‘Sonia’ were evaluated. Isolates obtained from rose flowers caused higher infection rates than those obtamed from various other hosts. The CVS ‘Madelon’, ‘Melody’ and ‘Sonia’ were found to be highly susceptible, whereas the cvs ‘Caramboie’, ‘Gabriella’, ‘Pasadena’ and ‘Rubinette’ were only slightly susceptible. The lower disease severity in the less susceptible cvs was based on a retardation of the growth of mfection hyphae in the petals, which may have been due to partial resistance. The formation of symptoms is effectuated already by the initial stages in the infection process. Thus, the apparent existing partial resistance to infections of B. cinerea cannot prevent the loss of ornamental value.  相似文献

The Abscission of Rose Petals   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Petal abscission was studied in twelve hybrid tea rose (Rosahybrida L.) cultivars. At about 20 °C the time to petalabscission in uncut stems in greenhouses was the same as incut stems placed in water in the greenhouse or in a climate-controlledroom. The time between petal unfolding and abscission dependedon the cultivar, and varied between 12 and 35 d. The time topetal abscission of the cultivars was inversely correlated withtheir flower diameter at full bloom (linear regression, r2 =0·82). In the cultivars with a relatively large flowerdiameter (10-18 cm) the petals fell without visible desiccationsymptoms, whereas in the group with a small diameter the petalswere partially or fully desiccated when shed. Fertilization occurred in some flowers of a few cultivars studied. In cultivars with a relatively large flower diameter (Papa Meilland,Cocktail, Dr. Verhage, Tineke) it had no effect on the timeto abscission in Motrea, Europa, and Carolien roses, which bearsmall flowers, the petals fell after fertilization, whereasin unfertilized flowers of the latter group of cultivars anabscission zone just above the uppermost node became activeand all parts above this node (pedicel and flower) turned brownand desiccated, though remained attached for more than a month. It is concluded that in the cultivars investigated: (a) thetime to petal abscission was inversely related to their flowerdiameter, (b) abscised petals were more desiccated in cultivarsin which the time to abscission was longer, (c) fertilizationhad little effect on the time to abscission in most cultivars, whereas the absence of fertilization prevented petal abscissionin a number of the small-diameter cultivars where it was replacedby flower abscission, and (d) cutting and placement in waterat 20 °C did not affect the time to abscission.Copyright1995, 1999 Academic Press Abscission, fertilization, flowers, petals, Rosa hybrida L., rose, water stress, carbohydrate stress  相似文献

Re-evaluating the role of selective abscission in moth/yucca mutualisms   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Conflicts of interest are common to mutualisms, particularly those derived from exploitative interactions. Conflicts of interest are particularly pronounced in pollination/seed predation mutualisms, such as moth/yucca interactions, where consumption of seeds by larvae of a plant's pollinator will raise the fitness of the pollinator but lower the fitness of the plant. A central question in these mutualisms is, therefore, “what limits seed predation?” If plants with excess flowers selectively abscise flowers containing many eggs, they may reduce seed predation and overall increase their fecundity. If eggs in abscised flowers die, selective abscission may additionally contribute to the limitation or regulation of pollinator populations, thereby decreasing the probability of future overexploitation. We examined the effect of selective abscission in the mutualism between Yucca kanabensis and one of its pollinating moths, Tegeticula altiplanella. Per capita mortality of moth eggs due to abscission was high (95.5%), but did not increase on inflorescences with more ovipositions per flower. Overall mortality was partitioned into two components based upon the proportion of visited flowers abscised (i.e. resource‐limitation) and additional mortality (=selective abscission). Resource‐limitation per se inflicted 93.9% egg mortality, or most of the mortality due to abscission. But, the average number of eggs in fruit was lower than the average number of eggs in flowers, indicating that there was some selectivity of abscission. However, neither source of mortality increased on inflorescences with more ovipositions per visited flower. Egg mortality resulting from selective abscission was not as high as possible, because the yuccas appeared to use oviposition‐damaged ovules as a cue for selective abscission, and there was considerable variation in the relationship between oviposition number and damaged ovules. However, even if yuccas had retained the flowers containing the fewest eggs, selective abscission still would not have been higher on inflorescences with more ovipositions per flower. Considering also that, 1) number of ovipositions is a poor predictor of the number of larvae that hatch and feed on the developing seeds in a fruit and that, 2) there are several moth/yucca interactions in which selective abscission does not occur, we conclude that abscission, and particular selective abscission, may have density‐limiting effects on moth populations, but will fail as general explanations for regulating the dynamics of moth populations.  相似文献

Flowering plants of Begonia × cheimantha cv Emma and Begonia x hiemalis cv Schwabenland Red were exposed to different light levels (0, 40, 80 M m–2S–1) and to ethylene (150 nl 1–1) in growth cabinets. Increasing irradiance level increased the number of flower buds in both begonia species. The amount of 14C-assimilates translocated to flower buds and the acid invertase activity in flower buds and flowers also increased with increasing irradiance level. Conversely, treatment with ethylene decreased the accumulation of 14C in flowers and flower buds, but did not affect acid invertase activity. Ethylene accelerated abscission of flowers and flower buds and increased the number of cup shaped and small flowers.  相似文献

Summary Flower and fruit characters were measured in ten female, five male and five fruiting male selections of A. deliciosa var deliciosa (A. Chev) Liang and Ferguson. Flowers from female vines had functional pistils, which contained many ovules. Stamens appeared to be fully developed but produced only empty pollen grains. Flowers from male vines had functional stamens that produced high percentages of pollen grains with stainable cytoplasmic contents. Pistils did not contain ovules and were generally small with vestigial styles. Fruiting male vines had both staminate and bisexual flowers. Staminate flowers were similar to those found on strictly male vines. Bisexual flowers produced ovules and stainable pollen. Pistils were smaller than in pistillate flowers. Although the three flower sexes differed in style length, ovary dimensions and ovules per carpel, staminate and bisexual flowers were similar in number of flowers per inflorescence, stamen filament length, pollen stainability, inflorescence rachis length and carpel number, and differed from pistillate flowers in these characters. The three flower sexes had similar sepal and petal numbers. The fruit of fruiting males were considerably smaller than those of females. Low ovule number appears to be the major factor limiting fruit size in the fruiting males studied. Prospects for developing hermaphroditic kiwifruit cultivars through breeding are discussed.  相似文献

Few dicarboximide-resistant strains of Botrytis cinerea produce macroconidia either on culture media or on natural substrates, although, the viability of such conidia was similar to those of sensitive strains. The ability of dicarboximide-resistant strains to infect strawberries was similar to that of sensitive strains and most of the resistant strains competed successfully with sensitive strains when inoculated in equal numbers onto detached strawberries and onto flowers of field-grown plants, especially after treatment with dicarboximide fungicides. All resistant strains tested survived for at least 9 months on inoculated strawberry leaf litter although their incidence was ‘diluted’ by wild type sensitive strains. Sporulation and dispersal of resistant strains from the litter was very limited resulting in a low incidence of fruit infection even after treatment with dicarboximides. Consequently, there was no significant increase of resistant strains in the plantation and control of infection was maintained with iprodione and dichlofluanid. Poor sporulation of dicarboximide-resistant strains of B. cinerea is considered to be the single most important factor in limiting their development in the field.  相似文献

Hydrogen peroxide generation rates of uninfected and infected leaves of two tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) cultivars showing differential susceptibility to Botrytis cinerea were determined. The superoxide anion, hydroxyl radical, ascorbate contents and changes in NADH peroxidase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and catalase (CAT) activities in the apoplast fraction were analysed. Infected leaves had an increased hydrogen peroxide level. It was greater and generally occurred earlier in plants of the less susceptible cv. Perkoz than in those of the more susceptible cv. Corindo. Induction of nitrotetrazolium blue reducing activity and SOD levels in apoplast were higher in cv. Perkoz 24 h after inoculation. In the controls, NADH peroxidase activity in apoplast was higher in the more susceptible cv. Corindo, but after infection it increased faster and to a higher level in the less susceptible cv. Perkoz. NADH oxidation was inhibited by only 15% by a specific inhibitor DPI (diphenylene‐iodonium) but was completely inhibited by KCN and NaN3. Similar increases in APX activity after 48 h and a small increase in catalase activities were observed in both cultivars soon after infection. These results indicate that resistance of tomato plants to infection by the necrotrophic fungus B. cinerea may result from early stimulation of hydrogen peroxide and superoxide radical generations by NADH peroxidase and SOD in apoplastic space, and they confirm the important role of their enhanced production in apoplastic spaces of plants.  相似文献

Eight apple genotypes, including cultivars and breeding selections resistant and susceptible to Venturia inaequalis on foliage, were screened for shoot infection and the development of wood pustules following inoculation of shoot tips of 1–year maiden trees in the greenhouse. Where genotypes were highly resistant in terms of foliar symptoms (cvs Prima and Gavin), no shoot infection was observed. Where genotypes were highly susceptible in terms of foliar symptoms, then shoot tissue was either resistant (cv. Shinko) or susceptible (cv. Starking). In one experiment, shoot tips were inoculated sequentially as shoots extended. No pustules developed where inoculations were made later than May. In a further experiment, two leaf internode positions were inoculated on one occasion. Pustules were only observed where inoculations were made above the youngest unrolled leaf. The results suggested that shoot tips were more susceptible during early extension growth of the shoot. Pustules were noted in abundance on petioles of susceptible cultivars, and these probably contributed to early leaf abscission.  相似文献

Abscission of pepper flowers is enhanced under conditions oflow light and high temperature. Our study shows that pepperflowers accumulate assimilates, particularly in the ovary, duringthe day time, and accumulate starch, which is then metabolizedin the subsequent dark period. With the exception of the petals, the ovary contains the highest total amounts of sugars and starch, compared with other flower parts and contains the highest totalactivity, as well as activity calculated on fresh mass basis,of sucrose synthase, in accordance with the role of this enzymein starch biosynthesis. Low light intensity or leaf removaldecreased sugar accumulation in the flower and subsequentlycaused flower abscission. The threshold of light intensity fordaily sugar accumulation in the sink leaves was much lower thanin flowers, resulting in higher daytime accumulation of sugarsin the sink leaves than in the adjacent flower buds under anylight intensity, suggesting a competition for assimilates betweenthese organs. Flowers of bell pepper cv. ‘Maor’and ‘899’ (sensitive to abscission) accumulatedless soluble sugars and starch under shade than the flowersof bell pepper cv. ‘Mazurka’ and of paprika cv.‘Lehava’ (less sensitive). The results suggest thatthe flower capacity to accumulate sugars and starch during theday is an important factor in determining flower retention andfruit set. Overproduction of flowers increases the attractiveness of a plant to pollinators, but results in increased geitonogamy. In general, flower abscission has been considered to be an event subsequent to the overproduction of flowers. We observed pollinator behavior in Tilia, a self-incompatible, insect-pollinated tree. We found that pollinators sequentially visited inflorescences within a tree; however, when they met with flower abortion by abscission, they were apt to move long distances and leave the tree. We propose that plants may utilize flower abscission as a method for regulating the movements of pollinators by disturbing them in order to prevent geitonogamy.  相似文献

The effect of heat stress on processes related to carbohydratepartitioning was investigated in young bell pepper (Capsicumannum L. cv. Maor) plants in relation to abscission of theirreproductive organs at different stages of development. None of the reproductive organs abscised after 5 d in a normalday/night temperature regime (25/18°C). With a temperatureregime of 35°C day, 25°C night, abscission occurredin only a small portion of the flower buds and none of the flowersand fruitlets. However, when temperatures in the day and nightwere reversed (25/35°C, day/night) all the buds and someof the flowers abscised during that time period. The young fruitat the first node did not abscise under any temperature regime. The abscission rate of the flower buds was reduced under heatstress if the developing fruit at the first node had been removed. High temperature during either the light or dark periods reducedthe export of [14C]sucrose from the source leaf (fed for 48h with [14C]sucrose). Both heat stress and fruit presence reduced the relative amountof [14C]sucrose which was exported to the flower buds, flowersand roots. Likewise, these treatments reduced the concentrationof reducing sugars in the reproductive organs. Concomitantly, the heat stress and fruit presence on the first node reducedthe activity of soluble acid invertase in the flower buds andthe roots, but not in young leaves. Overall, the results show that heat stress causes alternationin sucrose distribution in the plant, but may also have specificeffects on metabolic activities related to sucrose import andutilization in flower buds and flowers which in turn may enhancetheir abscission. The long-term persistence of obligate mutualisms (over 40 Mya in both fig/fig wasps and yucca/yucca moths) raises the question of how one species limits exploitation by the other species, even though there is selection pressure on individuals to maximize fitness. In the case of yuccas, moths serve as the plant's only pollinator, but eggs laid by the moths before pollination hatch into larvae that consume seeds. Previous studies have shown that flowers with high egg loads are more likely to abscise. This suggests that yucca flowers can select against moths that lay many eggs per flower through selective abscission of flowers; however, it is not known how yucca moths trigger floral abscission. We tested how the moth Tegeticula yuccasella triggers floral abscission during oviposition in Yucca filamentosa by examining the effects of ovipositor insertion and egg laying on ovule viability and floral abscission. Eggs are not laid at the site of ovipositor insertion: we used this separation to test whether wounded ovules were more closely associated with the ovipositor site or an egg's location. Using a tetrazolium stain to detect injured ovules, we determined whether the number of ovipositions affected the number of wounded ovules in naturally pollinated flowers. Two wounding experiments were used to test the effect of mechanical damage on the probability of floral abscission. The types of wounds in these experiments mimicked two types of oviposition-superficial oviposition in the ovary wall and oviposition into the locular cavity-that have been observed in species of Tegeticula. The effect of moth eggs on ovule viability was experimentally tested by culturing ovules in vitro, placing moth eggs on the ovules, and measuring changes in ovule viability with a tetrazolium stain. We found that ovules were physically wounded during natural oviposition. Ovules showed a visible wounding response in moth-pollinated flowers collected 7-12 h after oviposition. Exact location of wounded ovules relative to eggs and oviposition scars, as well as results from the artificial wounding experiments, showed that the moth ovipositor inflicts mechanical damage on the ovules. Significantly higher abscission rates were observed in artificially wounded flowers in which only 4-8% of the ovules were injured. Eggs did not affect ovule viability as measured by the tetrazolium stain. These results suggest that physical damage to ovules caused by ovipositing is sufficient to explain selective fruit abscission. Whether injury as a mechanism of selective abscission in yuccas is novel or a preadaptation will require further study.  相似文献

The time-course of flower development of Rubus idaeus L. cv.Glen Clova was studied on detached buds opened in the laboratory. After sepal and petal opening petal abscission occurred withthe petals from an individual flower being shed over 3-4 h.Abscission was accompanied by a peak in ethylene production.Treatment of flowers with aminoethoxyvinylglycine eliminatedthe peak in ethylene production but did not prevent petal abscission. However, petal loss was much slower, taking place over a periodof days rather than hours. Abscission was more effectively retardedby silver thiosulphate. Exogenous ethylene accelerated the rateof petal abscission and senescence. The increase in ethyleneproduction coincident with petal abscission appears to accelerateand co-ordinate the shedding of the separate petals on an individualflower. If ethylene is important in the induction of abscissionit would appear that the low rate of production sustained inthe presence of aminoethoxyvinylglycine must be sufficient.Copyright1993, 1999 Academic Press Rubus idaeus L., raspberry, flower, petal, abscission, ethylene  相似文献
