Kirikuchi charr, Salvelinus leucomaenis japonicus, is the southernmost population of the genus Salvelinus. It is endemic to the Kii Peninsula, central Honshu Island, Japan. As a consequence of anthropogenic disturbances, a few populations of Kirikuchi charr with low genetic diversity now survive only in small, isolated habitats. This study investigated the occurrence of deformed individuals and assessed differences between deformed and nondeformed fish in fitness-related traits, i.e., body size, body condition, growth rate, reproductive traits, survival rate, and habitat use, for two small isolated populations of Kirikuchi charr in the upper drainage of the Totsu River system of the Kii Peninsula. The two populations contained deformed fish in the respective proportions of 8.0-17.4% and 3.0-5.8% between 2003 and 2005. Annual survival rates of deformed fish were approximately half those of nondeformed fish. Other traits were not significantly different between deformed and nondeformed fish. These results indicate that the occurrence of deformities is an important ecological indicator that reflects the decline in fitness of small, isolated populations.  相似文献

Intra‐ and interspecific phylogenetic analysis of Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma and white‐spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis throughout Hokkaido Island was conducted using nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial DNA control region and three nuclear DNA markers [ribosomal DNA (ITS‐1), microsatellite ( u ‐85), SINE ( Fok ‐223)]. A total of 19 mtDNA haplotypes from 271 individuals of Dolly Varden, nine haplotypes from 134 white‐spotted charr were defined, and identified two well‐supported monophyletic clades for each species. Two haplotypes of Dolly Varden, however, were clustered together in the white‐spotted charr clade. Those haplotypes were found only from several rivers in the Shiretoko Peninsula, and a neighbouring river of that region. Analyses of ribosomal DNA and Fok ‐223 loci revealed that both species are characterized by having completely species‐specific diagnostic sequence and fragment patterns. Dolly Varden of the Shiretoko populations are typically allopatric in distribution where white‐spotted charr do not currently occur. In addition, incongruence in genetic relationships between mtDNA and nuclear DNA markers give strong evidence of historical mtDNA introgression between Dolly Varden and white‐spotted charr. Some white‐spotted charr diagnostic alleles in a nuclear microsatellite locus ( u ‐85) were found in some Shiretoko Dolly Varden populations, suggesting that introgressive hybridization might have also occurred in relatively recent contact and potentially ongoing evolutionary event. The present study presents an example of historical hybridization and introgression at the southernmost distribution limits of Dolly Varden.  相似文献

An experiment to induce anadromy in a population of wild brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis , was conducted near Sept-Iles, Quebec, in 1978–1979. Brook trout were captured from the Matamek River, tagged and transported to the Matamek River estuary during late spring and early summer, and allowed free movement between an impassable waterfall 0.7 km upstream and the sea. Fish were recaptured in autumn as they returned to fresh water. Over two years, 34.0% of the released fish were recaptured. Best returns were in the 2+ and 3+ age classes with 38.0 and 62.1% recaptured, respectively. Straying of transplanted fish appeared to be <1%. All age classes included sea run brook trout (sea trout) but the largest percentages of sea trout occurred in older fish. Growth was better in sea trout than in fish which did not develop anadromy, presumably a function of an increased food supply at sea. Severe tagging effects stunted growth and probably suppressed anadromy, especially among younger fish. Sexual characteristics of recaptured fish indicated suppressed maturation of gonads in sea trout compared to fish remaining in fresh water and there was a shift to a larger percentage of females in the sea trout. Comparisons between our results and data on other anadromous Salvelinus species underscore the potential for sea-ranching of trout and char as a moderate effort, high yield aquaculture technique.  相似文献

The need to vary body temperature to optimize physiological processes can lead to thermoregulatory behaviours, particularly in ectotherms. Despite some evidence of within-population phenotypic variation in thermal behaviour, the occurrence of alternative tactics of this behaviour is rarely explicitly considered when studying natural populations. The main objective of this study was to determine whether different thermal tactics exist among individuals of the same population. We studied the behavioural thermoregulation of 33 adult brook charr in a stratified lake using thermo-sensitive radio transmitters that measured hourly individual temperature over one month. The observed behavioural thermoregulatory patterns were consistent between years and suggest the existence of four tactics: two "warm" tactics with both crepuscular and finer periodicities, with or without a diel periodicity, and two "cool" tactics, with or without a diel periodicity. Telemetry data support the above findings by showing that the different tactics are associated with different patterns of diel horizontal movements. Taken together, our results show a clear spatio-temporal segregation of individuals displaying different tactics, suggesting a reduction of niche overlap. To our knowledge, this is the first study showing the presence of behavioural thermoregulatory tactics in a vertebrate.  相似文献

Synopsis Although swimming is energetically costly, a number of studies on salmonid species have demonstrated increased growth rates in fishes forced to swim for prolonged periods at moderate speeds (typically 1–2 body lengths per sec). This suggests that additional energetic costs of swimming are more than met by alternative compensatory gains. The mechanisms underlying such effects are not fully understood. In this paper, we describe an experiment designed to examine one possible mechanism, namely a swimming-induced inhibition of aggression, with consequent beneficial effects on growth. The study used Arctic charr,Salvelinus alpinus, a species for which a positive relationship between exercise and growth has been clearly established. Using direct behavioural observations on small groups, we demonstrate that individuals displaying high levels of aggressive behaviour are able to monopolise access to food and that enforced swimming at a moderate speed (1 body length per sec) reduces the incidence of aggression although not the degree of monopolisation of food shown by aggressive individuals. These results suggest that the enhanced growth rates accompanying enforced swimming may reflect lower energetic costs of reduced aggressive activity rather than improved access to food by subordinates.  相似文献

Synopsis During the spawning season the operational sex ratio of the large benthivorous (LB) arctic charr morph in Thingvallavatn is skewed in favour of males which compete intensely on the spawning site. The skewness is caused by males staying longer on the spawning ground than females. LB males employ two mating tactics. Either they guard the female or they attempt sneak-matings with guarded females. The tactics seem to obey a pure conditional strategy where relative size is the important criterion. Generally, the larger males use the guarding tactic and the smaller the sneaking tactic. Assessment of size is a part of the strategy. Relative size influences male behaviour irrespective of which tactic they employ. Guarding is more successful when courting is considered, both with respect to relative frequency and duration of courting acts. Females are aggressive towards the sneakers especially when they are small. This could be interpreted as female choice in favour of large males, but also as a defence against egg predation. A small dwarflike benthivorous morph (SB) is found in the same area. It is mainly active during night and on rare occasions SB-males are seen sneaking into the nest of LB-females. In such cases they are attacked vigorously by both LB sexes.  相似文献

Resource polymorphisms are believed to be an important intermediate step in competitive sympatric speciation. Reports of resource polymorphisms in fishes are becoming more common, but tests of the temporal persistence of resource polymorphisms remain scarce. We examined the temporal persistence of a body shape dimorphism reported previously for stream dwelling young-of-the-year brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, inhabiting slow vs. fast running water. In the year of our study, we found no difference in body shape between individuals in slow vs. fast flowing water, although fish in fast flowing water were of greater standard length than those in slower flowing water. We conclude that the resource polymorphism reported earlier for brook charr in streams is not stable temporally.  相似文献

The behaviour during an exploration task and the response to a confinement stress of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus were evaluated. Behaviour of individuals during 90 min of exploration was classified into high and low activity. High‐activity individuals had higher plasma cortisol levels following stress compared to low‐activity individuals. This indicates that high‐ and low‐activity individuals correspond to reactive and proactive stress‐coping styles. Further, a pigmentation analysis showed that high‐activity individuals had a higher number of carotenoid spots cm?2 than low‐activity individuals. Thus, carotenoid pigmentation, as melanin pigmentation in other salmonids, could be linked to stress‐coping style in S. alpinus.  相似文献

The growth of charr ( Salvelinus willughbii Günther ) caught in Windermere from 1941–1952 has been studied. Scales were used for determination of age and back-calculation of length for age. Autumn and spring spawners, males and females, and charr of normal and dwarf growth were treated separately. In fish of normal growth, the spring spawners were significantly smaller than the autumn spawners at ages 1 and 2 years, and significantly larger from age 4 years onwards. There was little difference in growth between males and females within the two spawning populations. Charr of lengths of less than 200 mm at age 4 years were considered to be dwarfs. Mean lengths at capture of male charr were: autumn spawners normal growth 272 mm, dwarf 218 mm; spring spawners normal growth 327 mm, dwarf 194 mm. The oldest recorded age was 8 years.  相似文献

Migrating Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) parr (118 ± 34.4 mm) were caught close to the rivermouth of the Dieset river on Spitsbergen (79°10′N), Svalbard. When subjected to a seawater tolerance test (34 ppt at 6°C) their blood plasma osmolality and sodium and magnesium concentrations increased significantly. After 90 h of exposure, average plasma osmolality was 410 (±54.1) mOsmol. Corresponding sodium and magnesium concentrations were 207 (±35.9) mmol l−1 and 2.7 (±1.36) mmol l−1, respectively. Survival at this time was only 12.5%. When smaller fish (96 ± 26.6 mm) were exposed to seawater, mortality was 100% within 72 h. We conclude that small-sized Svalbard charr may survive only short periods in seawater. Therefore, the lack of adequate hypoosmoregulatory capacity limits their access to marine food resources. Protein metabolism, including the interrelated processes of synthesis and degradation, mediates the growth of an animal. In ectothermic animals, protein metabolism is responsive to changes in both biotic and abiotic conditions. This study aimed to characterise responses of protein metabolism to food deprivation that occur in the coldwater salmonid, Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus. We compared two groups of Arctic charr: one fed continuously and the other deprived of food for 36 days. We measured the fractional rate of protein synthesis (KS) in individuals from the fed and fasted groups using a flooding dose technique modified for the use of deuterium-labelled phenylalanine. The enzyme activities of the three major protein degradation pathways (ubiquitin proteasome, lysosomal cathepsins and the calpain systems) were measured in the same fish. This study is the first to measure both KS and the enzymatic activity of protein degradation in the same fish, allowing us to examine the apparent contribution of different protein degradation pathways to protein turnover in various tissues (red and white muscle, liver, heart and gills). KS was lower in the white muscle and in liver of the fasted fish compared to the fed fish. There were no observable effects of food deprivation on the protease activities in any of the tissues with the exception of liver, where the ubiquitin proteasome pathway seemed to be activated during fasting conditions. Lysosomal proteolysis appears to be the primary degradation pathway for muscle protein, while the ubiquitin proteasome pathway seems to predominate in the liver. We speculate that Arctic charr regulate protein metabolism during food deprivation to conserve proteins.  相似文献

Synopsis Morphometric and meristic information confirmed the Salvelinus in Pinto Lake, Alberta, to be bull charr. The population was essentially electrophoretically monomorphic. Sub-yearling bull charr in Pinto Lake grew more slowly than fish from other populations in Alberta. Growth rate after the first year appeared to be linear until age 8 when growth declined. Concern was raised about the problem of anglers overexploiting the population.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine whether (i) the presence and concentration of ovarian fluid (OF) affects sperm performance traits, and (ii) variation in sperm performance traits is due to male identity, female identity, and/or male × female interactions in lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush. Spermatozoa from four males were activated in river water and OF from four females at two concentrations (10 and 15%). Presence of ovarian fluid influenced sperm traits; no differences were detected between 10 and 15% OF. Sperm traits varied depending on parental identity, such that sperm of some males perform better in the OF of all females and that in OF of some females sperm traits are higher for all males.  相似文献

Synopsis Brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, shifts its diet from zoobenthos to pelagic prey when living sympatrically with white sucker, Catostomus commersoni, in lakes of the Laurentian Shield. We tested the hypothesis that this diet difference would have a significant impact on their pyloric caecal morphology in 5 lakes containing allopatric brook charr populations and 6 other lakes containing both brook charr and white sucker. We observed that the mean length of the most posterior caecum of charr was significantly greater in sympatry than in allopatry (X ± 1 SD: 9.91 ± 1.12 mm versus 8.44 ± 0.67 mm). This is equivalent to an increase of 18% of total pyloric caecal mass (dry weight) in sympatric brook charr. These results indicate that this response to differences in diet, well known in birds, also occurs in fish.  相似文献

Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, and brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, inhabiting three lakes in the de la Trinité River and adjacent watershed, north shore, Gulf of St. Lawrence, were sampled in 1998. Arctic charr growth differed among lakes with the smallest fish coming from the largest lake. Arctic charr weight–length equation exponents were almost identical at all sample sites. Brook charr growth was also similar in all lakes. July stomach samples from Arctic charr consisted almost entirely of cladocerans in the largest lake, less so in the intermediate sized lake and were mostly aquatic insects in the smallest lake. Brook charr stomach contents were more varied and included fish. Carbon, nitrogen and sulphur stable isotope analyses (SIA) were used to provide a spatially and temporally integrated image of charr diets. SIA corroborated observed among-lake differences and similarities in species diets and suggested lake morphometry may influence measured results. The 15N signature in brook charr muscle increased with fork-length, as a result of a shift towards piscivory with size. The 15N signature in Arctic charr muscle tissue showed a significant negative correlation with fork-length in two of the studied lakes that appears related to dietary niche shifts. Results demonstrate the ability of SIA to detect dietary shifts otherwise unobservable from standard gut content analysis.  相似文献

The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether diploid and triploid brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, differ in their critical thermal maxima (CTM). Two age classes were tested (underyearlings, having average weight of 25 g, and yearlings, having average weight of 668 g) at two rates of temperature increase (2° C h-1 and 15° C h-1). No effect of ploidy on CTM was found. Fish exposed to the faster rate of temperature increase had higher CTM values than those exposed to the slower rate (underyearlings: 29.5 ± 0.1° C versus 29.1 ± 0.1° C in one trial and 29.8 ± 0.1° C versus 28.3 ± 0.1° C in a second trial; yearlings: 29.3 ± 0.1° C versus 27.7 ± 0.1° C in two trials, p < 0.001 in all cases). Underyearlings had higher CTM values than yearlings (29.2 ± 0.1° C versus 28.5 ± 0.1° C, p < 0.05). Female yearlings, which were immature, had higher CTM values than males, which had previously matured as one-year-olds (28.8 ± 0.1° C versus 28.3 ± 0.1° C, p < 0.001).  相似文献

At least four races of charr occur in Windermere, the largest natural lake in England: north basin and south basin autumn spawners, north basin and south basin spring spawners. This study examines racial differences between eggs and juveniles, and relates juvenile size and survival to egg size. There were no major differences between races for egg incubation times and the percentage of eggs hatching successfully, the latter being high (mean values 76–96%) with a negligible proportion of abnormal alevins (<0.8%). Although there were no significant differences in the lengths of the female parents, both eggs and alevins were significantly larger for the autumn spawners than the spring spawners. Size differences in alevins, especially live weight, were positively related to egg size but not female parent size. Mean percentage survival for juveniles attaining the independent feeding stage was higher for the progeny of autumn spawners (32%) than spring spawners (3%). Racial differences in the egg and alevin stages therefore appear to have a significant effect on subsequent survival, and could be ultimately responsible for the relatively small proportion of spring spawners (only 4–6%) in the Windermere population of charr.  相似文献
