Stages IV and V object permanence were studied with 38–40-week-old cats. A constraining apparatus preventing animals from pursuing the bowl containing meat before it was concealed was used. Either the bowl was seen moving and disappeared from view behind a screen (stage IV trials), or after this sequence, it reappeared from behind the first screen and disappeared behind a second screen (stage V trials). In both situations cats performed significantly above chance but the paths taken to reach the food were different according to the stage. In stage V trials, cats expressed a preference for the path leading to the end of the second screen where the food was last seen disappearing.  相似文献

There are two morphs of reproductive male in orangutans. Both morphs span the age range from adolescent to adult, but "subadult" males are smaller in size and lack secondary sexual features. In this study, urine samples were collected over a 2 year period from 23 captive male orangutans in order to define the endocrinology of this apparent arrest of secondary sexual development. Three males were juveniles, 3 to 5 years of age; seven males showed no secondary sexual trait development and were over 7 years of age; six males were in the process of developing secondary sexual features, with the youngest male being 6 years of age; and seven males were fully mature adults. Morning samples were analyzed by radioimmunoassay for levels of growth hormone (GH) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and group hormone profiles were compared by analysis of variance. GH is the primary hormone of growth and development and its increase in teenage boys is associated with the adolescent growth spurt. TSH stimulates the thyroid to produce and secrete hormones that have metabolic effects and required for normal growth and development. Results show that arrested adolescent male orangutans have a GH level about 1/3 that of developing adolescents (P = .0006). TSH levels do not differ significantly between arrested and developing adolescents. These data complement other endocrine data showing significantly lower levels of sex steroids and luteinizing hormone (LH) in arrested males than developing males [Maggioncalda, 1995a,b; Maggioncalda et al., 1999]. Together with documented behavioral differences between reproductive males with and without secondary sexual features, these endocrine data support the hypothesis that in male orangutans there are alternative developmental pathways and corresponding alternative reproductive strategies.  相似文献

Diagnosis of active mycobacterial disease in orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) has been impeded by high levels of non-specific intradermal skin test reactivity to mycobacterial antigens. This may be due in part to cross reactivity between antigens, tuberculin concentrations used or other species-specific factors. Antigen 85 (Ag85) complex proteins are major secretory products of actively growing mycobacteria, and measurement of serum Ag85 could provide a method for determining active mycobacterial infections that was not dependent on host immunity. Serum Ag85 was measured by dot-immunobinding assay using monoclonal anti-Ag85, purified Ag85 standard and enhanced chemiluminescence technology in coded serum samples from 14 captive orangutans from a zoo in Colorado, 15 semi-captive orangutans in Malaysia, and 19 free-ranging wild orangutans in Malaysia. Orangutans from Colorado (USA) were culture negative for Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. avium, although all had laboratory suspicion or evidence of mycobacterial infection; median serum Ag85 was 10 microU/ml (range, <0.25-630 microU/ml). Of the semi-captive orangutans, six were skin test reactive and two were culture positive for M. avium on necropsy. Median serum Ag85 for this group was 1,880 microU/ml (0.75-7,000 microU/ml), significantly higher than that of Colorado zoo or free-ranging Malaysian orangutans. Median serum Ag85 in the latter group was 125 microU/ml (range, 0.75-2,500 microU/ml). Entomopathogens are important natural enemies of many insect and mite species and as such have been recognised as providing an important ecosystem service. Indeed, fungal entomopathogens have been widely investigated as biological control agents of pest insects in attempts to improve the sustainability of crop protection. However, even though our understanding of the ecology of fungal entomopathogens has vastly increased since the early 1800s, we still require in-depth ecological research that can expand our scientific horizons in a manner that facilitates widespread adoption of these organisms as efficient biological control agents. Fungal entomopathogens have evolved some intricate interactions with arthropods, plants and other microorganisms. The full importance and complexity of these relationships is only just becoming apparent. It is important to shift our thinking from conventional biological control, to an understanding of an as yet unknown “deep space”. The use of molecular techniques and phylogenetic analyses have helped us move in this direction, and have provided important insights on fungal relationships. Nevertheless, new techniques such as the PhyloChip and pyrosequencing might help us see beyond the familiar fields, into areas that could help us forge a new understanding of the ecology of fungal entomopathogens.  相似文献

Young orangutans are highly neophobic, avoid independent exploration and show a preference for social learning. Accordingly, they acquire virtually all their learned skills through exploration that is socially induced. Adult exploration rates are also low. Comparisons strongly suggest that major innovations, i.e. behaviours that have originally been brought into the population through individual invention, are made where ecological opportunities to do so are propitious. Most populations nonetheless have large innovation repertoires, because innovations, once made, are retained well through social transmission. Wild orangutans are therefore not innovative. In striking contrast, zoo-living orangutans actively seek novelty and are highly exploratory and innovative, probably because of positive reinforcement, active encouragement by human role models, increased sociality and an expectation of safety. The explanation for this contrast most relevant to hominin evolution is that captive apes generally have a highly reduced cognitive load, in particular owing to the absence of predation risk, which strongly reduces the costs of exploration. If the orangutan results generalize to other great apes, this suggests that our ancestors could have become more curious once they had achieved near-immunity to predation on the eve of the explosive increase in creativity characterizing the Upper Palaeolithic Revolution.  相似文献

Guard bees of the stingless bee Tetragonisca angustula (Apidae: Meliponinae) hover in stable positions in front of the nest to protect the flight corridor leading to the nest entrance against insect intruders. To unravel the visual control of station keeping, we exposed these hovering guards to expanding and contracting patterns at the nest front. The bees fly away from an expanding pattern and towards the centre of a contracting pattern along a line connecting their initial position and the centre of expansion regardless of where in the visual field they view the pattern. The response of bees to a spinning radial pattern is different: they fly parallel to the pattern, up and down or forward and backward depending on whether they initially hover to the side, above or below the centre of rotation. The bees respond to horizontal and to vertical expansion and contraction. They also adjust their distance relative to a rotating spiral which produces a realistic flow field and thus allowed us to test to what extent the bees minimize image motion speed. We find that guard bees indeed move in the appropriate direction to minimize the image motion speed they experience. A comparison of bees hovering at different distances from the nestfront at the onset of pattern motion and experiencing very different image velocities shows that the dynamics of the reaction is quite uniform. At the pattern velocities tested, we did not find evidence that guard bees use image motion to control their flight speed. The bees' response rather suggests that the underlying mechanism might be insensitive to the size of motion vectors. Accepted: 2 April 1997  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to explore the impact of the provision of manipulable and edible materials on the activity level of captive orangutans. The effects of three environmental conditions—bare exhibit, manipulables present, and manipulables plus edibles present—on the gross motor activity of four captive orangutans were compared using a multielement design. Results indicated that activity increased under the enriched conditions with increases in activity type specific to the environmental change. In addition, zoo visitors rated the exhibit more favorably on days the enriched conditions were in effect than on bare exhibit days.  相似文献

Great apes sometimes feed on items of low nutritional value with bioactive secondary compounds. These molecules may be toxic and neophobia is presumed to be an essential factor in avoiding the ingestion of noxious items. The aim of this study is to investigate, in captive orangutans, individual and social learning involved in the discovery and ingestion of new items. We presented novel aromatic plants - 11 fresh plants and 4 infused plants - to 4 captive weaned Bornean orangutans, both under isolated and group conditions, and recorded their behaviour and interactions between group members. All animals tasted by nibbling or ingested most of the plants presented. Regardless of the experimental condition, individual responses did not vary visibly across the sessions, despite numerous close observations, and food transfers between individuals were observed. Our results suggest that a low level of neophobia and a strong propensity to look to conspecifics for information allow Bornean orangutans to expand their diet after weaning. Our results also provide some evidence that olfaction is a key sense in determining food edibility based on previous experience.  相似文献

Summary Superoxide dismutase CuZn (SOD1) enzymatic activity was measured in five orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus, PPY) and compared to that of man, chimpanzee, and gorilla. It was found to be increased by a factor of two in one orangutan (Ralfina) and by a factor of 1.5 in the four others. In situ hybridization of the SOD1 cDNA human probe showed a heterozygous intrachromosomal rearrangement of pair PPY XXI, possibly an insertion, in Ralfina. Southern blotting showed that the SOD1 gene is modified in the three orangutans that were investigated and that a further modification of the 5-end of the gene had occurred in Ralfina. The evolutionary implications of these observations are discussed.  相似文献

According to the results of the experiment performed on board the International Space Station with participation of 15 Russian cosmonauts, comparative analysis of efficacy of two models of preventive measures used by the Russian members of long-term space missions is carried out: intense interval training in the aerobic–anaerobic power zone (recommended model) and continuous low-intensity exercises in the aerobic power zone of muscle activity energy supply. Interval training in space flight provided the maintenance of the level of physical performance close to the pre-flight level as indicated by the maximum running speed, physiological value of work, and the lactate level after performing the standard load. We describe putative mechanisms of counteraction to adaptive rearrangement of the propulsion system in zero gravity and expand understanding of the laws governing human body’s interaction with Earth’s gravitational field. The research results presented in this paper show the high preventive efficacy of interval training compared with regular aerobic training, which is very important now in the time of searching for means and methods of prevention of hypogravitational alterations during interplanetary missions.  相似文献

Human-orangutan conflict and hunting are thought to pose a serious threat to orangutan existence in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo. No data existed prior to the present study to substantiate these threats. We investigated the rates, spatial distribution and causes of conflict and hunting through an interview-based survey in the orangutan's range in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Between April 2008 and September 2009, we interviewed 6983 respondents in 687 villages to obtain socio-economic information, assess knowledge of local wildlife in general and orangutan encounters specifically, and to query respondents about their knowledge on orangutan conflicts and killing, and relevant laws. This survey revealed estimated killing rates of between 750 and 1800 animals killed in the last year, and between 1950 and 3100 animals killed per year on average within the lifetime of the survey respondents. These killing rates are higher than previously thought and are high enough to pose a serious threat to the continued existence of orangutans in Kalimantan. Importantly, the study contributes to our understanding of the spatial variation in threats, and the underlying causes of those threats, which can be used to facilitate the development of targeted conservation management.  相似文献

Structural analysis of plant-pollinator networks has revealed remarkably high species and interaction diversity and highlighted the species important for pollination services. Although techniques to analyze plant-pollinator networks began to emerge a decade ago, the characterization of spatiotemporal variation of interactions is still in its infancy. Understanding the ecological and evolutionary causes and consequences of spatial and temporal variation in plant-pollinator interactions is important for both basic and applied questions in community structure and function, the evolution of floral traits, and the development of optimal conservation strategies. Here we review observational, theoretical, and experimental studies of temporal and spatial variation in plant-pollinator interaction networks to establish a foundation for future studies to incorporate perspectives in spatiotemporal variation. Such perspectives are crucial given the rapid environmental changes associated with habitat loss, climate change, and biological invasions, which we discuss in this context. The inherent plasticity of plant-pollinator interactions and network structure suggests that many species should be able to persist by responding to environmental changes quickly, even though the identity of their mutualistic partners may change.  相似文献

Cultural transmission is a key component of human evolution. Two of humans' closest living relatives, chimpanzees and orangutans, have also been argued to transmit behavioral traditions across generations culturally [1-3], but how much the process might resemble the human process is still in large part unknown. One key phenomenon of human cultural transmission is majority-biased transmission: the increased likelihood for learners to end up not with the most frequent behavior but rather with the behavior demonstrated by most individuals. Here we show that chimpanzees and human children as young as 2 years of age, but not orangutans, are more likely to copy an action performed by three individuals, once each, than an action performed by one individual three times. The tendency to acquire the behaviors of the majority has been posited as key to the transmission of relatively safe, reliable, and productive behavioral strategies [4-7] but has not previously been demonstrated in primates.  相似文献

Appreciable levels of gene repair result from the hybridization of two oligonucleotides at a specific site in a mutated gene and subsequent correction by a form of oligonucleotide-directed mutagenesis known as gene repair. The incorporation of the two oligonucleotides into superhelical plasmid DNA leads to the formation of double d-loops, structures shown to be templates for the repair of both frameshift and point mutations. Structural limitations placed on the template indicate that correction is influenced significantly by the positioning of the second oligonucleotide, known as the annealing oligonucleotide. Complexes constructed with two oligonucleotides directly opposite each other exhibit the highest levels of gene repair activity. Blocking the 3'-end of either oligonucleotide with an amino C7 group does not diminish the performance of the double d-loop as a template for correction of the point mutation, suggesting that primer extension does not play a pivotal role in the mechanism of gene repair.  相似文献

Orangutans share many intellectual qualities with African great apes and humans, likely because of their recent common ancestry. They may also show unique intellectual adaptations because of their long evolutionary divergence from the African lineage. This paper assesses orangutan intelligence in light of this evolutionary history. Evidence derives from observations of juvenile ex-captive orangutans reintroduced to free forest life by the Wanariset Orangutan Reintroduction Project, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The intellectual qualities shared by great apes and humans point to a distinct “great ape” intelligence with hierarchization as a pivotal cognitive mechanism. Evolutionary reconstructions jibe with this view and suggest that technically difficult foods may have been key selection pressures. Orangutans should then show hierarchical intelligence when obtaining difficult foods. Evidence on ex-captive orangutans' techniques for processing difficult foods concurs. Intellectual qualities distinct to orangutans may owe to arboreal travel pressures; in particular arboreality may aggravate foraging problems. Evidence confirms that ex-captive orangutans' techniques for accessing difficult foods located arboreally are intellectually complex—i.e. they show hierarchization. These findings suggest other factors probably important to understanding great ape and orangutan forms of intelligence and their evolutionary origins.  相似文献

Summary Chromosome displacement was analysed in three different translocations. Two alternative hypotheses were examined: (1) Displacement is determined by the spatial ordering of chromosomes on the metaphase plate. (2) Displacement is a function of the gross physical property of chromosome size and does not reflect ordering. Predicted numbers of displacements were calculated for each chromosome for each of the two hypotheses and these were compared with the observed numbers of displacements using a 2 analysis. In the analysis for two of the three translocations, the first hypothesis was rejected whilst the alternative hypothesis was supported by all three analyses. It is concluded that chromosome displacement is a function of chromosome size and does not reflect spatial ordering at metaphase. Furthermore, it is suggested that many studies of apparent ordering at metaphase may merely reflect chromosome displacement.The analysis of displacement rates in all other chromosomes of the complement was undertaken in one of the translocation carriers. This showed no alteration of relative displacement rates.  相似文献

Recent Miocene fossil discoveries of large hominoids resemble orangutans. Since the evolution of large body size was functionally related to a powerful masticatory system in Miocene ape radiations, a better understanding of adaptations in extant orangutans will be informative of hominoid evolution. It is suggested here, based on the behavioral ecology of extant orangutans, that foraging energetics and large body size are tied to a dietary shift that provided access to and utilization of resources not generally available to other primates.  相似文献
