Two species of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) co-exist at a lake-outlet site in Finland. The adult females of one of them, Simulium noelleri Fried., are able to produce eggs without taking a blood meal; females of the other species, S. truncalum Ldstr., must suck blood before they can mature eggs. Female pupae, pharate adults and adults of S. noelleri are markedly heavier in carbon weight than males of this species, and of males and females of S. truncatum. Females of the former species develop a fat body during the larval stadia.  相似文献

1. We measured the abundance and eggs per female of four Daphnia species in turbid and relatively clear regions of Lake Texoma (Oklahoma‐Texas, U.S.A.) on 12 dates over the course of 5 years. 2. Two species, Daphnia lumholtzi and Daphnia parvula, occurred and reproduced in turbid locations, but two other species, Daphnia mendotae and Daphnia pulicaria, occurred almost exclusively in relatively clear conditions. 3. To test the hypothesis that interference with foraging excludes clear‐water Daphnia species from turbid locations, we incubated adult D. mendotae at both a clear and a turbid site. In three successive experiments D. mendotae individuals incubated at the turbid site carried as many or more eggs than individuals incubated at the clear site.  相似文献

The preoviposition and oviposition periods, the eclosion periods and numbers of eggs laid by adult ticks of five species, namelyAmblyomma variegatum, Boophilus decoloratus, B. geigyi, Hyalomma rufipes andH. truncatum, maintained in a natural habitat were compared with those maintained in semi-natural and artificial habitats. Within the natural habitats, open and shady sites were distinguished.Maximum oviposition occurred during the peak of the rains in engorgedA. variegatum andB. decoloratus, and the numbers of eggs laid by those kept in the natural and semi-natural habitats were significantly lower in the dry season than in the rainy season. Maximum oviposition in engorgedH. rufipes kept in the natural habitat occurred during the early rains while minimum oviposition took place during the peak of the rains.Oviposition in engorgedH. truncatum was poor among those kept in the natural habitat during the peak and end of the rains. EngorgedA. variegatum andB. decoloratus kept in shady sites of the natural habitat laid significantly more eggs than in all other habitats at all seasons, while forH. truncatum andH. rufipes, numbers of eggs laid in the open site were significantly higher than those laid in other habitats at all seasons. In all species investigated, success in oviposition was aided by moisture provided by light to moderate rainfall, while excessive moisture in terms of heavy rainfall adversely affected oviposition.  相似文献

In this study we examine the feeding patterns of immature stages of Hyalomma truncatum and Hyalomma marginatum rufipes ticks on different hosts. Larvae of H. truncatum developed through a three-host pattern on two species of field mice, Rhabdomys pumilio and Lemniscomys rosalia. On guinea-pigs, both Hyalomma species followed a mixed two-host and three-host pattern, with the latter route being preferred, since more than 70% of the fully fed larvae dropped off from their hosts. H. truncatum was a two-host tick on rabbits. Larvae of H. marginatum rufipes did not prefer R. pumilio and L. rosalia as hosts. On guinea-pigs, H. marginatum rufipes immatures showed a mixed two-host and three-host pattern with a bias towards the three-host life cycle, since approximately 58% of the fully fed larvae dropped off. On rabbits, H. marginatum rufipes was exclusively a two-host tick. Mean engorgement weights and blood quantities ingested by H. truncatum nymphs that developed through a three-host pattern on mice were significantly higher (p<0.0001) than for those that developed through a two-host pattern on guinea-pigs and rabbits. For H.marginatum rufipes, there were no significant differences (p>0.05) between engorgement weights of nymphs that developed through two-host and three-host patterns. However, there were significant differences (p<0.0001) in blood quantities ingested by nymphs of this tick species following feeding on different hosts.  相似文献

The duration times of eggs, combined naupliar instars and of the different copepodite stages of five species of cyclopoid copepods — Acanthocyclops robustus, Cyclops vicinus, Diacyclops bicuspidatus, Mesocyclops leuckarti, and Thermocyclops crassus — were investigated at five different temperatures. The five species can be divided in two groups: two species, C. vicinus and D. bicuspidatus, adapted to cold water conditions and three species, A. robustus, M. leuckarti and T. crassus adapted to warm water conditions. The cold water species showed a faster egg development than M. leuckarti and T. crassus at 5–15 °C. The eggs and instars of the warm water species M. leuckarti tend to develop faster than those of the former two species at higher temperatures. A. robustus showed the shortest egg and instar development at 10–25 °C. The warm water species T. crassus produced no eggs at 10 °C and temperatures below. At higher temperatures (20, 25 °C) the egg and instar duration times were similar or longer than those of the other species. When cultured in total darkness a great part of the CIV respectively CV copepodites of the summer forms entered arrest and the percentage of copepodites that showed an arrest of development was highest at lowest temperatures. The present results are compared with data from literature and differences are discussed.  相似文献

Overwintering population of Cercopagis is represented by resting eggs which hatch generally in May. Although representatives of the first parthenogenetic generation (the spring form individuals) differ morphologically from individuals of the subsequent generations (the summer form individuals) and could be keyed to a separate species – Cercopagis (Apagis) ossiani – our analysis confirm that there is only one Cercopagis species in the Gulf of Riga: Cercopagis pengoi. Notable seasonal dynamics was observed for the gamogenetic mode of reproduction, being strongly associated with the total population density. Gamogenetic females develop since the end of June and reach the maximum absolute abundance in July whereas their proportion is generally the highest in fall. The gamogenetic absolute fecundity drops to the lowest level late July but increased afterwards until the late August. One resting egg was, an average, found in 45.4%, two in 53.4% and three in 1.2% of females. Parthenogenetic fecundity was significantly higher in May–June compared to other months studied. Brood pouch of parthenogenetic females was found to contain 11.6 ± 1.0 and 10.2 ± 0.3 embryos in the spring and summer form individuals, respectively. Variation in the two modes of reproduction and fecundity is probably solely not controlled by temperature, but also by food availability and population density.  相似文献

Dikerogammarus haemobaphes is a Ponto-Caspian gammarid that has invaded vast areas in Central and Western Europe. Our paper is a first presentation of its life history features in an invaded region. The study was conducted in the Vistula River in Poland from autumn 2003 to autumn 2005 in two sites differing in hydrological conditions with one being water reservoir. The results showed that the reproductive period lasted 8 months from April till October in both sites. Three generations per 1 year were observed: autumn (overwintering), spring and summer. Ten cohorts per year were distinguished. The individuals from the reservoir were much bigger than those from the other site. The fecundity of those specimens was also higher and they laid 52 eggs per clutch in average in comparison with 37 eggs in the river itself. The strong relationship between the number of embryos (in developmental stage 2) per clutch and the length of females was noticed. The overall mean egg size of stage 2 of D. haemobaphes was 0.430 ± 0.029 mm which is smaller than noted for native species such as Gammarus fossarum. A potentially high reproductive capacity, comparatively small eggs, short time of eggs’ development, fast reaching sexual maturation, short life span, tolerance to a wide range of environmental conditions, all promote the invasion of this Ponto-Caspian gammarid in freshwater ecosystems of the temperate climate zone.  相似文献

Members of the genus Colletotrichum include some of the most economically important fungal pathogens in the world. Accurate diagnosis is critical to devising disease management strategies. Two species, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and C. truncatum, are responsible for anthracnose disease in papaya (Carica papaya L.) and bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) in Trinidad. The ITS1–5.8S–ITS2 region of 48 Colletotrichum isolates was sequenced, and the ITS PCR products were analyzed by PCR-RFLP analysis. Restriction site polymorphisms generated from 11 restriction enzymes enabled the identification of specific enzymes that were successful in distinguishing between C. gloeosporioides and C. truncatum isolates. Species-specific restriction fragment length polymorphisms generated by the enzymes AluI, HaeIII, PvuII, RsaI, and Sau3A were used to consistently resolve C. gloeosporioides and C. truncatum isolates from papaya. AluI, ApaI, PvuII, RsaI, and SmaI reliably separated isolates of C. gloeosporioides and C. truncatum from bell pepper. PvuII, RsaI, and Sau3A were also capable of distinguishing among the C. gloeosporioides isolates from papaya based on the different restriction patterns that were obtained as a result of intra-specific variation in restriction enzyme recognition sites in the ITS1–5.8S–ITS2 rDNA region. Of all the isolates tested, C. gloeosporioides from papaya also had the highest number of PCR-RFLP haplotypes. Cluster analysis of sequence and PCR-RFLP data demonstrated that all C. gloeosporioides and C. truncatum isolates clustered separately into species-specific clades regardless of host species. Phylograms also revealed consistent topologies which suggested that the genetic distances for PCR-RFLP-generated data were comparable to that of ITS sequence data. ITS PCR-RFLP fingerprinting is a rapid and reliable method to identify and differentiate between Colletotrichum species.  相似文献

Local, short-term dispersal by the U.S. federally-threatened leopard darter, Percina pantherina, was examined in the field and in the laboratory to assess the possible effects of natural versus man-made barriers on movement. Mark-resight studies were conducted in two summers at sites in the Glover River (southeastern Oklahoma, U.S.A.). At one site, patches of 'preferred' habitat were separated by a natural riffle; at the other site, by a low-water road crossing with culverts. At the Natural Riffle site, darters moved downstream across the riffle, but also moved upstream into deeper water when water temperatures exceeded 29°C in the `preferred' habitat. Use of deeper, cooler waters by this species in late summer suggests that thermal refugia may be important habitats for the long-term management of leopard darters. At the Road Crossing site, all documented movement was in a downstream direction, and at least two darters traversed culverts in the low-water bridge. Laboratory studies of movement across several types of culverts suggested that culverts significantly decrease the probability of movement among habitat patches.  相似文献

The wasp Anagrus atomus L. parasitizes eggs of the cicadellid Empoasca vitis (Göthe) on grapevines during the vegetative season. In vineyards, abundant parasitoid emergence occurs in the autumn as a result of a developmental delay in part of the A. atomus population. In this context, physiological times required by the parasitoid to develop in E. vitis eggs are recorded during the summer. In early summer, all individuals develop fully, with physiological times in agreement with those reported in the literature. From early August onwards, an increasing proportion of parasitoids show a delay in development involving pre‐imaginal stages. Under transmission microscopy, larvae of A. atomus inside the eggs of E. vitis can be clearly differentiated as ‘light’ and ‘dark’ types, which are associated with normal and delayed development, respectively. The decreasing photoperiod as autumn approaches appears to promote the retardation of growth. This phenomenon can be considered a typical case of risk spreading because, when the availability of E. vitis eggs in vineyards is high (i.e. in early summer), A. atomus shows (i) only a normal developmental pattern that allows a faster population increase, whereas (ii) when E. vitis egg availability begins to be scarce (i.e. from mid summer), an increasing proportion of individuals having delayed development provides better fitness because it allows the parasitoid to synchronize its life history with leafhopper species that lay overwintering eggs on plants other than grapevines.  相似文献

In some herbivorous insects, such as Coleoptera and aphids, not only the host species of larvae, but also those of adults should be considered as key determinants of potential fecundity because oviposition is affected by the quality of host species during both larval and adult stages. This study examined the relatively greater impact on host species of the larval or adult stage on oviposition of the willow leaf beetle Plagiodera versicolora Laicharting (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). We conducted an experiment using a 2 × 2 experimental design, in which either of two different host plant species was fed in larval and adult stages. Females fed on a locally unavailable host Salix eriocarpa in the adult stage did not lay any eggs, but those fed on the locally available host S. babylonica laid 67–75 eggs on average, irrespective of larval host species. Such reproductively inactive females fed S. eriocarpa as an adult host recovered reproductive activity within 3 weeks after changing the host species to S. babylonica. This result indicated that the host species fed in the adult stage had a greater impact on oviposition than in the larval stage.  相似文献

Cold environmental temperature is detrimental to reproduction by oviparous squamate reptiles by prolonging incubation period, negatively affecting embryonic developmental processes, and by killing embryos in eggs directly. Because low soil temperature may prevent successful development of embryos in eggs in nests, the geographic distributions of oviparous species may be influenced by the thermal requirements of embryos. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that low incubation temperature determines the northern distributional limit of the oviparous lizard Sceloporus undulatus. To compare the effects of incubation temperature on incubation length, egg and hatchling survival, and hatchling phenotypic traits, we incubated eggs of S. undulatus under temperature treatments that simulated the thermal environment that eggs would experience if located in nests within their geographic range at 37°N and north of the species’ present geographic range at latitudes of 44 and 42°N. After hatching, snout–vent length (SVL), mass, tail length, body condition (SVL relative to mass), locomotor performance, and growth rate were measured for each hatchling. Hatchlings were released at a field site to evaluate growth and survival under natural conditions. Incubation at temperatures simulating those of nests at 44°N prolonged incubation and resulted in hatchlings with shorter SVL relative to mass, shorter tails, shorter hind limb span, slower growth, and lower survival than hatchlings from eggs incubated at temperatures simulating those of nests at 37 and 42°N. We also evaluated the association between environmental temperature and the northern distribution of S. undulatus. We predicted that the northernmost distributional limit of S. undulatus would be associated with locations that provide the minimum heat sum (∼495 degree-days) required to complete embryonic development. Based on air and soil temperatures, the predicted northern latitudinal limit of S. undulatus would lie at ∼40.5–41.5°N. Our predicted value closely corresponds to the observed latitudinal limit in the eastern United States of ∼40°N. Our results suggest that soil temperatures at northern latitudes are not warm enough for a sufficient length of time to permit successful incubation of S. undulatus embryos. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that incubation temperature is an important factor limiting the geographic distributions of oviparous reptile species at high latitudes and elevations.  相似文献

We investigated why two species of aphids (Aphis jacobaeae and Brachycaudus cardui) were very rare in a study site despite their abundance in the surrounding area. The study site contained many common species of aphid and we tested the hypothesis that the community of aphid predators in the field excluded the missing species. Colonies of the two aphid species were artificially initiated in the experimental site and allocated to one of four treatments: control; ground predator exclusion; total predator exclusion, and provision of mutualist ants. Two measures of colony performance were analysed: longevity and cumulative aphid density. Colonies decline naturally in late summer but control colonies disappeared very quickly while colonies protected from all predators survived the longest. The performance of colonies protected from just ground predators was intermediate. We failed to persuade ants to tend A. jacobaeae. Colonies of B. cardui attended by ants performed better than controls and those with ground predators excluded, but not as well as those with all predators excluded. We conclude that the absence of the two species of aphid in the study site is influenced by the resident predator community, and by the availability of mutualists. Anoplophora glabripennis (Motsch.) is a woodboring beetle that is native to China. For a long time, it caused great losses in the economy and ecology of northwest China. Attractants are often used to control insects. The volatiles emitted from the host plant play an important role for insects in finding their target. To explore the mechanism of selectivity to different host plants, the response of Anoplophora glabripennis to four different host plants was investigated, which included Acer negundo L., Acer mono Maxim., Acer truncatum Bunge. and Acer platanoides L., and the compounds in the profiles of volatiles were identified from these species. The olfactory responses of Anoplophora glabripennis to the odors of different plants showed preference for certain host plants: Acer negundo, Acer mono and Acer truncatum. The attraction of Acer negundo and Acer mono was significantly different (p<0.05). The attraction of Acer negundo to the insects was stronger than to Acer mono. Acer platanoides neither attracted nor repelled the insects. Compounds in the profiles of volatiles from the above four species were identified and quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) equipped with a CP-4020 termodesorption and cold trap (TCT) device. The constituents of volatiles and the relative concentrations were different in the four host species. The amount of ketones, alcohols and aldehydes in the four plants showed the same order: Acer negundo<Acer mono<Acer truncatum<Acer platanoides, while that of alkanes and esters was quiet different: Acer negundo L.>Acer mono Maxim.>Acer truncatum Bunge.>Acer platanoides L.. 1-penten-3-ol, ocimene and trans-Germanylacetone were repellent to Anoplophora glabripennis. 1-penten-3-ol and trans-gerranylacetone were identified in Acer platanoides, and Ocimene was the most attractive to Anoplophora glabripennis among these species. The extent of feeding damage caused by Anoplophora glabripennis differed among four species. The sequences was Acer negundo>Acer mono>Acer truncatum>Acer platanoides. The epidermal hairs of the four host plants revealed that the extent of damage was related to the physical characteristics of the host plants. __________ Translated from Acta Ecologica Sinica, 2006, 26(3): 870–877 [译自:生态学报]  相似文献

Colletotrichum species complexes are among the top 10 economically important fungal plant pathogens worldwide because they can infect climacteric and nonclimacteric fruit at the pre and/or postharvest stages. C. truncatum is the major pathogen responsible for anthracnose of green and red bell pepper fruit worldwide. C. brevisporum was recently reported to be a minor pathogen of red bell pepper fruit in Trinidad, but has recently been reported as pathogenic to other host species in other countries. The ability of these phytopathogens to produce and secrete cutinase is required for dismantling the cuticle of the host plant and, therefore, crucial to the necrotrophic phase of their infection strategy. In vitro bioassays using different lipid substrates confirmed the ability of C. truncatum and C. brevisporum isolates from green and red bell peppers to secrete cutinase. The diversity, structure and organization and synteny of the cutinase gene were determined among different Colletotrichum species. Cluster analysis indicated a low level of nucleotide variation among C. truncatum sequences. Nucleotide sequences of C. brevisporum were more related to C. truncatum cutinase nucleotide sequences than to C. gloeosporioides. Cluster patterns coincided with haplotype and there was evidence of significant positive selection with no recombination signatures. The structure of the cutinase gene included two exons with one intervening intron and, therefore, one splice variant. Although amino acid sequences were highly conserved among C. truncatum isolates, diversity “hot spots” were revealed when the 66‐amino acid coding region of 200 fungal species was compared. Twenty cutinase orthologues were detected among different fungal species, whose common ancestor is Pezizomycotina and it is purported that these orthologues arose through a single gene duplication event prior to speciation. The cutinase domain was retained both in structure and arrangement among 34 different Colletotrichum species. The order of aligned genomic blocks between species and the arrangement of flanking protein domains were also conserved and shared for those domains immediately located at the N‐ and C‐terminus of the cutinase domain. Among these were an RNA recognition motif, translation elongation factor, signal peptide, pentatricopeptide repeat, and Hsp70 family of chaperone proteins, all of which support the expression of the cutinase gene. The findings of this study are important to understanding the evolution of the cutinase gene in C. truncatum as a key component of the biotrophic–necrotrophic switch which may be useful in developing gene‐targeting strategies to decrease the pathogenic potential of Colletotrichum species.  相似文献

A central aspect of simuliid adaption to life in moving water is a silky secretion which they produce in their salivary glands. This secretion is spread on the substrate surface thereby enabling adhesion of the posterior abdominal hooks of the larvae to the substrate surface. Therefore, silk pads are a prerequisit for simuliid filter‐feeding as well as any kind of locomotive activity. If silk pad adhesion is weak, larvae risk drifting off, either directly or during locomotion. Properties of the adhesive (=silk) as well as the substrate surface may cause weak adhesion. A specialist such as S. noelleri which has little chance of surviving after drifting off its lake outlet habitat, should have adaptations to reduce this risk. Such an adaptation could be very durable silk pads, giving larvae the chance to be safely attached for a relatively long time. In this study larval silk pads of S. ornatum and S. noelleri were stained using Giemsa's staining procedures. Changes in silk pad structure and traces of rot after 2–33 days of exposure to stream water were recorded and compared. Silk pads of S. ornatum and S. noelleri showed differences which indicate differences in ageing processes and biochemistry of this secretion.  相似文献

Colletotrichum truncatum was initially described from pepper and has been reported to infect 180 host genera in 55 plant families worldwide. Samples were collected from pepper plants showing typical anthracnose symptoms. Diseased samples after isolation were identified as C. truncatum based on morphological characters and ITS‐rDNA and β‐tubulin sequence data. Intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were used to estimate genetic diversity in C. truncatum from Malaysia. A set of 3 ISSR primers revealed a total 26 allele from the amplified products. Cluster analysis with UPGMA method clustered C. truncatum isolates into two main groups, which differed with a distance of 0.64. However, the genetic diversity of C. truncatum isolates showed correlation between genetic and geographical distribution, but it failed to reveal a relationship between clustering and pathogenic variability. Phylogenetic analyses discriminated the C. truncatum isolates from other reference Colletotrichum species derived from GenBank. Among the morphological characters, shape, colour of colony and growth rate in culture were partially correlated with the ISSR and phylogenetic grouping. Pathogenicity tests revealed that C. truncatum isolates were causal agents for pepper anthracnose. In the cross‐inoculation assays, C. truncatum isolates were able to produce anthracnose symptoms on tomato, eggplant, onion, lettuce and cabbage. A pathogenicity and cross‐inoculation studies indicated the potential of C. truncatum for virulence and dominancy on plant resistance.  相似文献

Analysis of mitochondrial 16S rRNA sequences of four speciments from two lizard species (Leiolepis guentherpetersi and L. reevesii) showed identity of 91.1–91.6% and the genetic distances were 8.8–9.3%. The two speciments (C5 and C7) of L. reevesii species have the homology of 96.5–99.4% with L. belliana and L. reevesii, respectively. Whereas, those of L. guentherpetersi species (S4 and S6) have higher homology of 99.6–100% with L. guttata and L. guentherpetersi, respectively. These mitochondrial 16S rRNA sequences of individuals from L. guentherpetersi (S4 and S6) and L. reevesii (C5 and C7) were deposited in GenBank with accession number EU428186, EU428187, EU428188, and EU428189, respectively.  相似文献

In the fell-field habitat at 140–270 m altitude on the sub-Antarctic Ile de la Possession, Iles Crozet, the dimorphic beetle Amblystogenium pacificum Putzeys (Coleoptera: Carabidae) was studied monthly throughout the southern year 1993–1994 by timed hand collections involving turning stones on the rocky fell-field. There were many mating couples and females containing well-developed eggs in every month and the species reproduced throughout the year, with no evidence of a winter cessation of egg production. However, the frequency of mating couples was about twice as great in the summer half-year (October–March) as in the winter half (April–September). Relatively small differences in monthly mean temperatures between the summer and winter at Iles Crozet render all-year reproduction not unexpected when comparisons are made with the temperatures and phenology of Carabidae in cool habitats in other parts of the world. Mating pairs were collected at unusually high frequencies for carabids. The frequency of such pairs, taken per unit effort by hand collecting, was highest in October–December, lower from January to May and intermediate from June to September. Comparison of beetles taken as solitary, non-mating individuals with those taken as mating couples showed that in summer, females of the black morph of this dimorphic species were more frequently involved in mating than expected, but no differences were detected in winter. Female beetles were divided into younger individuals (putative age 1–2 years) and older females (putative age 3–5 years or more) by the amount of claw-wear on individuals of this species. This division indicated that about 40% of the older females showed no egg development when captured, but only about 20% of the younger females were non-breeding. However, of the reproducing beetles, young and old females matured similar numbers of eggs. An altitude transect showed that the proportion of the black morph increased significantly with altitude. Studies at 140–270 m showed that a significantly smaller proportion of the older females of the brown morph were breeding than in the younger brown individuals, and this effect was particularly evident in the colder winter period. No such age differences existed amongst the black morph.  相似文献
