Seasonal and depth variations of the abundance, biomass, and bacterivory of protozoa (heterotrophic and mixotrophic flagellates and ciliates) were determined during thermal stratification in an oligomesotrophic lake (Lake Pavin, France). Maximal densities of heterotrophic flagellates (1.9 × 103 cells ml–1) and ciliates (6.1 cells ml–1) were found in the metalimnion. Pigmented flagellates dominated the flagellate biomass in the euphotic zone. Community composition of ciliated protists varied greatly with depth, and both the abundance and biomass of ciliates was dominated by oligotrichs. Heterotrophic flagellates dominated grazing, accounting for 84% of total protistan bacterivory. Maximal grazing impact of heterotrophic flagellates was 18.9 × 106 bacteria 1–1h–1. On average, 62% of nonpigmented flagellates were found to ingest particles. Ciliates and mixotrophic flagellates averaged 13% and 3% of protistan bacterivory, respectively. Attached protozoa (ciliates and flagellates) were found to colonize the diatom Asterionella formosa. Attached bacterivores had higher ingestion rates than free bacterivorous protozoa and may account for 66% of total protozoa bacterivory. Our results indicated that even in low numbers, epibiotic protozoa may have a major grazing impact on free bacteria. Correspondence: C. Amblard.  相似文献

Plankton abundance and biomass were investigated in five lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica: Lakes Bonney, Fryxell, Joyce, Hoare and Miers. Despite plankton communities being dominated by organisms <100 m in length, there were striking differences between the lakes, including large variations in plankton vertical distribution and differences in total plankton biomass. Bacterial biomass was highest in the anoxic monimolimnia of the meromictic lakes, reaching 191 g C l–1 in Lake Fryxell. Photosynthetic nanoflagellates dominated phytoplankton in the five lakes studied. Highest chlorophyll a concentrations were recorded at the chemocline of Lake Fryxell (21 g chl a l–1). Heterotrophic nanoflagellate concentrations were low, ranging from 2 cells ml–1 in Hoare to 237 cells ml–1 in Bonney. By Antarctic standards, ciliates were relatively successful in terms of biomass and diversity in Lakes Fryxell and Hoare. In contrast, Lake Miers possessed extremely low ciliate abundance (<0.04 cells ml–1). On both sampling occasions, copepod nauplii were observed in Lake Joyce. This is the first recording of crustacean zooplankton within the McMurdo Dry Valley Lakes. Because the foodwebs of these lakes are structured by bottom-up forces, differences in plankton distributions could be related to the physicochemical characteristics of each lake. The effect of lake evolution (legacy) and present-day climate change on planktonic dynamics is discussed.  相似文献

The effects of light intensity, oxygen concentration, and pH on the rates of photosynthesis and net excretion by metalimnetic phytoplankton populations of Little Crooked Lake, Indiana, were studied. Photosynthetic rates increased from 1.42 to 3.14 mg C·mg–1 chlorophylla·hour–1 within a range of light intensities from 65 to 150E·m–2·sec–1, whereas net excretion remained constant at 0.05 mg C·mg–1 chlorophylla·hour–1. Bacteria assimilated approximately 50% of the carbon released by the phytoplankton under these conditions. Excreted carbon (organic compounds either assimilated by bacteria or dissolved in the lake water) was produced by phytoplankton at rates of 0.02–0.15 mg C·mg–1 chlorophylla·hour–1. These rates were 6%–13% of the photosynthetic rates of the phytoplankton. Both total excretion of carbon and bacterial assimilation of excreted carbon increased at high light intensities whereas net excretion remained fairly constant. Elevated oxygen concentrations in samples incubated at 150E· m–2·sec–1 decreased rates of both photosynthesis and net excretion. The photosynthetic rate increased from 3.0 to 5.0 mg C·mg–1 chlorophylla· hour–1 as the pH was raised from 7.5 to 8.8. Net excretion within this range decreased slightly. Calculation of total primary production using a numerical model showed that whereas 225.8 g C·m–2 was photosynthetically fixed between 12 May and 24 August 1982, a maximum of about 9.3 g C·m–2 was released extracellularly.  相似文献

The life history characteristics, population dynamics and production of Pontoporeia hoyi in Lake George, New York, were studied from May 1981 through October 1982. P. hoyi, in terms of both density and standing crop, is the most prevalent member of the deep water macrobenthos of Lake George. It reproduces in the winter, with young being released in the late winter-early spring. At the southernmost study site, young released in the spring grew to 6–7 mm in length and bred during their first winter. At the remaining sites, P. hoyi required two years to complete its life cycle. This difference in life history characteristics can be related to food availability and temperature differences. The open waters of the south end of Lake George are not only more productive but are also more closely associated with the littoral zone, providing a wealth of bacteria-rich detritus for benthic deposit feeders. The greater food availability in the south basin of Lake George is reflected in significantly larger brood sizes and smaller size at maturity for P. hoyi populations from the south end of the lake. The southernmost study site has significantly greater P. hoyi density and standing crop than all other sites. The cohort of the year dominated density and standing crop at the southern site while the cohort of the previous year dominated standing crop at the other sites. Peak abundance ranged from 600 · m–2 at the north site to 2 900 · m–2 at the south site. Cohort production ranged from 2g · m–2 at the north site to 15g · m–2 at the south site.  相似文献

In situ growth of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) in Lake Donghu, a eutrophic shallow lake in mainland China, was studied from January 1999 to March 2000 using a modified Weisse protocol. The study results indicated that the growth rates of HNF showed pronounced seasonal variation (–0.37–1.25 d–1), reaching the maximum during spring to early summer. When the water temperature was higher than 25.5°C, HNF growth was inversely proportional to water temperature. There was an effect by bacterial abundance and autotrophic picoplankton on HNF growth that depended on location. HNF biomass was the highest in late spring, and the HNF production ranged from –2.25 to 35.45 mg l–1 d–1 with mean of 3.17 mg l–1d–1. When considered in the context of biomass and production data for zooplankton in Lake Donghu, it was evident that HNF contributed significantly to the total zooplankton production in Lake Donghu. These in situ studies indicate that temperature and food supply are the major determinants of HNF abundance and productivity.  相似文献

Summary The plankton of twelve freshwater and slightly saline lakes in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica was sampled in February 1991. All of the lakes are oligotrophic. The chlorophyll a concentrations in the lakes ranged from 0.10–2.69 g · 1–1. The majority of the phytoplankton were flagellates or picoplanktonic cyanobacteria with the species composition varying between the lakes. Cyanobacteria were found in five of the lakes. Five to 6 species of ciliated protozoa occurred, among them oligotrichs, including the mixotrophic species Strombidium viride. The concentrations of protists and bacteria were an order to several orders of magnitude lower than reported from lower latitude oligotrophic lakes. Low species diversity and low numbers in the plankton characterise these eastern Antarctica lakes which reflects their low nutrient status and isolation.  相似文献

The acidic caldera lake Caviahue (Patagonia, Argentina) and its main tributaries were studied on two dates during September 1998. The main results are: The acidity of the Lake Caviahue (pH: 2.56, acidity: >5 mmol H+ l–1) is controlled by the extremely acidic Upper Rio Agrio (pH: 1.78, acidity: >20 mmol H+ l–1). The high sulphate contents of both the river and the lake can be attributed to sulphuric acid generated by the uptake of sulphurous gases in the crater lake of Copahue Volcano at approximately 2800 m a.s.l. The high concentrations of both Fe and trace metals (e.g. Cr, Ni, Zn) in Lake Caviahue originate from sulphur–acid interactions with the predominantly volcanic geology of the catchment area. The P-rich andesitic geology influences both the Upper and Lower Rio Agrio and Lake Caviahue. Both were found to have high phosphorus concentrations (300–500 g P l–1) indicative of a high potential for eutrophication. The plankton community consisted of bacterioplankton, phytoplankton and rotifers. The phytoplankton was dominated by one green alga, Keratococcus raphidioides (>90% of total abundance) followed by a green sphaerical and Chlamydomonas sp. The total phytoplankton density was about 15000 cells ml–1 in the upper 10 m of the water column. Rotifers were represented by one bdelloid species and their abundance was highly variable (360–4040 ind l–1) in the water columm. In the Upper and Lower Rio Agrio, the epilithic community was dominated by one chloroccocal species and two species of Ulothricales. According to trophic categories based on phytoplankton density and TP concentration, Lake Caviahue can be classified as mesotrophic/eutrophic. However, chlorophyll a concentrations observed were not in agreement with this state.  相似文献

Investigations on the abundance, biomass and position of heterotrophic flagellates (HF) in the benthic microbial food web of a melt water stream on King George Island, Antarctic Peninsula, were undertaken during the Antarctic summer from 23rd December 1997 until 13th March 1998. Abundance and biomass of potential HF resources (picophotoautotrophic and non-photoautotrophic bacteria) as well as potential predators on HF (ciliates and meiofauna) were also investigated. HF abundance ranged from approximately 9 × 103 to 81 × 103 cells cm–3, values which fall into the same range as those found in lower latitudes. Numerically important benthic HF were euglenids, kinetoplastids, thaumatomastigids and especially chrysomonads. Most species identified have been shown to have a worldwide distribution. Abundance of the benthic ciliates ranged from 27 to 950 cells cm–3. Mean bacterial abundance was 1.9 × 107 and 5.2 × 108 cells cm–3 for picophotoautotrophic and non-photoautotrophic benthos, respectively. The well-developed microbial community was able to support the large number of nematods, gastotrichs, tardigrads and rotifers with abundances reaching more than 1000 individuals cm–3. The largest portion of heterotrophic biomass was formed by the meiofauna with a mean of 63 g C cm–3, followed by that of the heterotrophic bacteria with 4.80 g C cm–3. Picophotoautotrophic bacteria contributed a mean of 1.37 g C cm–3. HF and ciliates mean biomass was 0.61 and 1.99 g C cm–3, respectively, with the HF biomass comprising between <10 and 70% of the total protozoan biomass. The data obtained in this study identify the melt water stream as a hot-spot of heterotrophic microbial and meiofaunal activity during the austral summer. The HF in the melt water stream formed a diverse group in terms of taxa and potential feeding types. Chrysomonads, kinetoplastids, euglenids and thaumatomastigida were the most abundant taxa. A classification into feeding types identified an average of 34% of the total HF as bacterivorous while all others were able to utilise other, larger organisms as resources. Potential trophic interactions between HF and bacteria and higher trophic levels are discussed.  相似文献

Microbial food web in a large shallow lake (Lake Balaton, Hungary)   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Seasonal variations of phyto-, bacterio- and colourless flagellate plankton were followed across a year in the large shallow Lake Balaton (Hungary). Yearly average chlorophyll-a concentration was 11 µg 1–1, while the corresponding values of bacterioplankton and heterotrophic nanoflagellate (HNF) plankton biomass (fresh weight) were 0.24 mg 1–1 and 0.35 mg 1–1, respectively. About half of planktonic primary production was channelled through bacterioplankton on the yearly basis. However, there was no significant correlation between phytoplankton biomass and bacterial abundance. Bacterial specific growth rates were in the range of 0.009 and 0.09 h–1, and ended to follow the seasonal changes in water temperature. In some periods of the year, predator-prey relationships between the HNF and bacterial abundance were obvious. The estimated HNF grazing on bacteria varied between 3% and 227% of the daily bacterial production. On an annual basis, 87% of bacterial cell production was grazed by HNF plankton.  相似文献

We studied spatial variation in abundance of marine benthic and pelagic heterotrophic nanoflagellates in relation to abundances of autotrophic flagellates, bacteria and cyanobacteria in an upwelling area off the Banc d'Arguin, Mauritania. There was enormous spatial variation in densities. In the sediments these ranged from 8–219 × 103 cm–3 for heterotrophic flagellates. Maximum values are in the range of those for temperate shallow marine bottoms. Low densities (< 20 × 103) were confined to the deep stations (> 1000 m). Over the shelf (10–100 m depth) densities were high but related to grain size rather than to concurrent upwelling phenomena or to the abundance of benthic macrofauna.Pelagic flagellate abundance appeared to be more indicative of contemporary hydrographic conditions, most obvious by an increase in the ratio heterotrophic/autotrophic nanoflagellates away from the area of most intense upwelling.  相似文献

The influence of copepods (mainly Oithona sim-ilis) and krill (Euphausia superba) grazing on the species composition of plankton communities in ship board con tainers was investigated during the spring and post spring period in the Scotia Weddell Sea in the Antarctic ocean. Numbers of grazers were experimentally manipulated in containers with natural phytoplankton assemblages. With ratural levels of copepods but no krill a high (700–950 g C·l1, ca 30 g chl a·.l1) phytoplankton biomass developed. In these cultures large diatoms, e.g. Corethron criophilum and chains of Thalassiosira sp., made up 80% of total phytoplankton cell carbon at the end of the experiment. In cultures with elevated numbers of copepods (5X or 10X the natural level) phytoplankton biomass was somewhat reduced (ca 23 g chl a · l1) compared to cultures with natural copepod abundance, but still high. Phytoplankton species composition was on the other hand greatly influenced. Instead of large diatoms these cultures were dominated by Phaeocystis pouchetii (70%) together with small Nitszchia sp. and Chaetoceros neogracile (20%). In containers with krill (both juveniles and adults), but without elevated numbers of copepods, phytoplankton biomass rapidly approached zero. With 10X the in situ level of copepods, krill first preyed on these before Corethron criophilum and Thalassiosira sp. were grazed. When krill were removed a plankton community dominated by flagellates (60–90%), e.g. Pyramimonas sp. and a Cryptophycean species, grazed by an unidentified droplet-shaped heterothrophic flagellate, developed. These flagellates were the same as those which dominated the plankton community in the Weddell Sea after the spring bloom. A similar succession was observed in situ when a krill swarm grazed down a phytoplankton bloom in a few hours. Our experiments show that copepods cannot control phytoplankton biomass in shipboard cultures even at artificially elevated numbers. Krill at concentrations similar to those in natural swarms have a great impact on both phytoplankton biomass and species composition in shipboard cultures. Both copepods and krill may have an impact on phytoplankton species composition and biomass in situ since the rates of phytoplankton cell division were probably artificially increased in shipboard cultures compared to natural conditions, where lower growth rates make phytoplankton more vulnerable to grazing. A similarity between phytoplankton successions in containers and in situ, especially with respect to krill grazing, supports the conclusion that grazing may structure phytoplankton communities in the Scotia-Weddell Sea.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

The complicated routes by which organic material is channelled up to higher trophic levels via bacteria and protozoans is a major issue in aquatic microbial ecology. Because of the fragile nature of protists it is not straightforward to perform experimental studies of prey–predator interactions. Here we present an approach for the assessment of ciliate grazing on living heterotrophic nanoflagellates. Stationary phase cultures of a heterotrophic nanoflagellate (Cafeteria sp.) were live-stained by allowing them to take up fluorescently labelled macromolecules. Controls revealed that this label persisted for several hours. Fluorescently labelled living flagellates (FLLF) were added into enriched natural assemblages of marine oligotrich ciliates and uptake of FLLF was monitored over time. Oligotrich ciliates did not incorporate fluorescent-labelled macromolecules but a linear FLLF uptake over time was observed for 20–30 min at 20°C. Ingestion rates were 21–46 FLLF h–1 at a concentration of about 2×104 FLLF ml–1, which corresponded to clearance rates of 0.7–0.8 l ciliate–1 h–1. These results are in the same order of reported ciliate grazing on phytoplankton of similar size. This method represents a direct approach to measure ciliate grazing specifically on living heterotrophic nanoflagellates.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation by periphyton and plankton was measured on the Amazon flood-plain using the acetylene reduction method calibrated with15N-N2. The average ratio (± SD) of moles C2H4 reduced per mole N2-N fixed was 3.4 ± 0.7, similar to other studies. Periphyton and plankton had high rates of light-dependent nitrogen fixation, with dark nitrogen fixation averaging 26% of the average rates in the light. The average daily (24 h) rates for periphyton nitrogen fixation in 1989 and 1990 were 1.79 and 0.51 mmol N2-N·m–2·d–1 respectively, which are comparable to summer rates in many temperate cyanobacterial assemblages. Nitrogen fixation was depressed at N03 concentrations as low as 0.5 M, and was below detection limits at concentrations of 4 M, which occurred during periods of river flooding. Planktonic nitrogen fixation rates were high (0.5–0.8 mmol N2-N·m–2·d–1) during the high-water and drainage phases of the annual hydrograph when the floodplain waters were draining towards the river (low NO3 ), but rates were undetectable (< 0.05 mmol N2-N·m–2·d–1) when there was river flooding (high NO3 ). Nitrogen fixation by periphyton and plankton in 1989–1990 accounted for approximately 8% of previously reported total annual nitrogen inputs to the floodplain at Lake Calado.  相似文献

A mesocosm experiment in 24 enclosures (6 m3) started at the end of June 1996 in a highly eutrophic shallow lake, Lake Köyliönjärvi (SW Finland). The original factorial design with nutrient, fish and macrophyte treatments was lost due to strong winds causing leakages. However, after the walls were made leak-proof again on July 11, the planktonic communities developed in divergent ways. On July 31 there was a tenfold variation in total crustacean biomass among the enclosures and the lake (40.2–417.5 g C l–1), and chlorophyll a varied from 9.5 to 67.0 g l–1. Here, the single-day data on the 25 planktonic communities is analysed by means of correlation and factor analysis in order to identify factors controlling the protozoans, with particular emphasis on ciliates. The data set comprised: total phosphorus, nitrogen, chlorophyll, bacteria, autotrophic picoplankton, heterotrophic flagellates, abundance and species composition of ciliates, phytoplankton and metazooplankton. The results indicate that although the total ciliate abundance (ranging from 16.2 to 95.0 ind l–1) was controlled by food resources, the observed differences in ciliate community structure could be attributed partly to differential predation by metazooplankton. The effect of Daphnia cucullata, the dominant daphnid cladoceran, was stronger than that of other metazoans.  相似文献

Phosphorus and nitrogen excretion rates by zooplankton communities from two eutrophic and shallow Dutch lakes were measured in laboratory. The variations in excretion rates in the lakes (May–October) were caused mainly by fluctuation in zooplankton biomass. Mean summer excretion rates (June–September) were 2.4 and 0.9 µg PO4P·1–1·d–1 in Lake Loosdercht and Lake Breukeleveen, respectively. This difference between the lakes was caused mainly by the lower zooplankton biomass in Lake Breukeleveen. The excretion of 2.4 µg PO4P·1–1·d compared with the calculated P-demand of phytoplankton of 8.0 µg PO4P·1–1·d–1 is substantial in the summer (June–September) and far more important than the external P-supply of 0.4 µg P·1–1·d–1 and sediment release of 0.5 µg P·1–1·d–1. Both temperature and composition of zooplankton affected the weight specific excretion rates of the zooplankton community. The weight specific community excretion rates of P and N increased with temperature (exponential model); 1–8 g PO4P·mg–1 zooplankton-C·d–1 and 5–42 µg NH3N·mg–1 zooplankton-C·d–1 (10°C–20°C).  相似文献

Flagellate grazing on bacteria in a small dystrophic lake   总被引:9,自引:9,他引:0
Fluorescent beads were used to determine the grazing on bacteria by heterotrophic and mixotrophic flagellates in a highly humic (water colour 300–600 mg Pt l–1) small lake. In summer phagotrophic flagellates constituted about three quarters of the numbers of phytoplankton (including heterotrophic or mixotrophic flagellates) in the uppermost epilimnion. Due to their small size their respective contribution to the biomass was about one quarter. The most important phagotrophic species were Ochromonas sp., and Chromulina spp. which ingested 75–203% of their body carbon per day from bacteria. In view of the abundance and biomass of phagotrophic and mixotrophic flagellates and their very high growth potential, they clearly play a significant role in the food chains of this lake. In addition to providing energy, bacteriovory also represents an important supply of inorganic and organic nutrients under nutrient limiting conditions.  相似文献

Development of ice biota in a temperate sea area (Gulf of Bothnia)   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
A study of sea ice biota was carried out in the Gulf of Bothnia (northern Baltic Sea) during the winter of 1989–1990. Samples (ice cores) were taken at a coastal station at regular time intervals during the ice season. Chlorophyll a concentration, algal species distribution, bacterial numbers, and primary and bacterial production were measured. Colonization of the ice began in January when daylight was low. As the available light increased, the algae started to grow exponentially. The vertical chlorophyll a distribution changed and algal species composition and biomass changed during the season. During the initial and middle phase of colonization, ice-specific diatoms, Nitzschia frigida and Navicula pelagica, dominated the algal biomass. Nutrients (PO4 3– and NO3j) were found to be depleted during the time of algal exponential growth. The maximum algal biomass exceeded 800 g C 1–1. The primary production supplied food for heterotrophic organisms. The presence of heterotrophic organisms of different trophic levels (bacteria, flagellates, ciliates and rotifers) indicated an active microbial food web.  相似文献

The impact of grazing by soil flagellates Heteromita globosa on aerobic biodegradation of benzene by Pseudomonas strain PS+ was examined in batch culture. Growth of H. globosa on these bacteria obeyed Monod kinetics (max, 0.17 ± 0.03 h–1; Ks, 1.1 ± 0.2 × 107 bacteria mL–1) and was optimal at a bacteria/ flagellate ratio of 2000. Carbon mass balance showed that 5.2% of total [ring-U-14C]benzene fed to bacteria was subsequently incorporated into flagellate biomass. Growth-inhibiting concentrations (IC50) of alkylbenzenes (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene) were inversely related with their octanol/ water partitioning coefficients, and benzene was least toxic for bacteria and flagellates with IC50 values of 4392 (± 167) M and 2770 (± 653) M, respectively. The first-order rate constant for benzene degradation (k1, 0.48 ± 0.12 day–1) was unaffected by the presence or absence of flagellates in cultures. However, the rate of benzene degradation by individual bacteria averaged three times higher in the presence of flagellates (0.73 ± 0.13 fmol cell–1 h–1) than in their absence (0.26 ± 0.03 fmol cell–1 h–1). Benzene degradation also coincided with higher levels of dissolved oxygen and a higher rate of nitrate reduction in the presence of flagellates (p < 0.02). Grazing by flagellates may have increased the availability of dissolved oxygen to a smaller surviving population of bacteria engaged in the aerobic reactions initiating benzene degradation. In addition, flagellates may also have increased the rate of nitrate reduction through the excretion of acetate as an additional electron donor for these bacteria. Indeed, acetate was shown to progressively accumulate in cultures where flagellates grazed on heat-killed bacteria. This study provided evidence that grazing flagellates stimulate bacterial degradation of alkylbenzenes and provide a link for carbon cycling to consumers at higher trophic levels. This may have important implications for bioremediation processes.  相似文献

In order to determine the relative importance of autotrophic and heterotrophic activities in both bacterial and phytoplanktonic communities in an oligomesotrophic lake, the size fractionation by differential filtration and the use of a bacterial inhibitor (gentamycin) were combined. The study was carried out at Lake Pavin during the spring planktonic bloom. Photosynthetic and photo- and chemoheterotrophic activities were measured from the assimilation of NaH14CO3 and glucose-3H, using a double labeling technique. The bacterial community was at low cell concentration (0.6 to 7 × 105 cells ml) and represented very low biomass values (0.9 to 11.5 gC liter–1). The abundance of the phytoplankton varied between 0.5 and 1.8 × 106 cells liter–1, and biomass values ranged between 19 and 118 gC liter–1. The diatom Melosira italica sp. subarctica (O. Mueller) was the largely dominant species in the meta- and hypolimnion. Inorganic fixation by photolithotrophy (mean value: 1.66 mg C m–3 hour–1) largely predominates over assimilation by photoheterotrophy (mean value: 0.93 g C m–3 hour–1) or chemoheterotrophy (mean value: 2.42 g C m–3 hour–1). However, because of the considerable underestimation of heterotrophic assimilation due to the experimental methods used, and because of the spatial and temporal separation of photolithotrophic and photo- and chemoheterotrophic activities, it is likely that the fixation of organic carbon by microalgae plays an important role in the survival of species and/or in competitive interactions, as the results with Monoraphidium contortum (Pasch. et Korschik.), the prevailing species in the epilimnion, would suggest. 1. The plankton dynamics of Ace Lake, a saline, meromictic basin in the Vestfold Hills, eastern Antarctica was studied between December 1995 and February 1997. 2. The lake supported two distinct plankton communities; an aerobic microbial community in the upper oxygenated mixolimnion and an anaerobic microbial community in the lower anoxic monimolimnion. 3. Phytoplankton development was limited by nitrogen availability. Soluble reactive phosphorus was never limiting. Chlorophyll a concentrations in the mixolimnion ranged between 0.3 and 4.4 μg L??1 during the study period and a deep chlorophyll maximum persisted throughout the year below the chemo/oxycline. 4. Bacterioplankton abundance showed considerable seasonal variation related to light and substrate availability. Autotrophic bacterial abundance ranged between 0.02 and 8.94 × 108 L??1 and heterotrophic bacterial abundance between 1.26 and 72.8 × 108 L??1 throughout the water column. 5. The mixolimnion phytoplankton was dominated by phytoflagellates, in particular Pyramimonas gelidicola. P. gelidicola remained active for most of the year by virtue of its mixotrophic behaviour. Photosynthetic dinoflagellates occurred during the austral summer, but the entire population encysted for the winter. 6. Two communities of heterotrophic flagellates were apparent; a community living in the upper monimolimnion and a community living in the aerobic mixolimnion. Both exhibited different seasonal dynamics. 7. The ciliate community was dominated by the autotroph Mesodinium rubrum. The abundance of M. rubrum peaked in summer. A proportion of the population encysted during winter. Only one other ciliate, Euplotes sp., occurred regularly. 8. Two species of Metazoa occurred in the mixolimnion; a calanoid copepod (Paralabidocera antarctica) and a rotifer (Notholca sp.). However, there was no evidence of grazing pressure on the microbial community. In common with most other Antarctic lakes, Ace Lake appears to be driven by ‘bottom-up’ forces.  相似文献
