Summary: We compared intranidal variation in worker size in the two closely related plant-ants Aphomomyrmex afer and Petalomyrmex phylax. Each of these genera is monotypic, and the two appear to be sister species among extant ants. Workers of A. afer are larger on average and exhibit much greater intranidal size variation. Workers of P. phylax are smaller and much less variable in size. Both species show weak allometry for some pairs of characters. Head shape is also different in workers of the two species. We discuss these differences in relation to the ecology of A. afer and P. phylax, and propose a scenario for the evolutionary divergence of worker morphology in these two species. Based on comparisons of these two monotypic genera with related ants, we suggest that reduced intranidal variation in worker size is a derived trait in Petalomyrmex.  相似文献

Parasites can vary in the number of host species they infect, a trait known as “host specificity”. Here we quantify phylogenetic signal—the tendency for closely related species to resemble each other more than distantly related species—in host specificity of avian haemosporidian parasites (genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon) using data from MalAvi, the global avian haemosporidian database. We used the genetic data (479 base pairs of cytochrome b) that define parasite lineages to produce genus level phylogenies. Combining host specificity data with those phylogenies revealed significant levels of phylogenetic signal while controlling for sampling effects; phylogenetic signal was higher when the phylogenetic diversity of hosts was taken into account. We then tested for correlations in the host specificity of pairs of sister lineages. Correlations were generally close to zero for all three parasite genera. These results suggest that while the host specificity of parasite sister lineages differ, larger clades may be relatively specialised or generalised.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships among sexually reproducing species of Antennaria (Asteraceae) are poorly understood. An earlier cladistic analysis based on morphology did not fully resolve the phylogeny of these taxa and therefore a different approach using molecular data was explored. The internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS-1 and ITS-2) of nuclear ribosomal DNA were sequenced for 30 species of Antennaria and one species from each of the outgroup genera Anaphalis, Ewartia, Leontopodium, and Pseudognaphalium. The ITS-1 sequence in Antennaria ranged from 253 to 260 base pairs (bp) in length, and the proportion of nucleotide differences between pairs of species of Antennaria ranged from 1 to 14%. For ITS-2, the divergence between pairs of species of Antennaria ranged from 0 to 8%. ITS-2 is shorter than ITS-1, ranging from 213 to 219 bp. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that, relative to the outgroups included, Antennaria is a well-supported monophyletic group. Based on the genera surveyed, Leontopodium appears to be the sister genus of Antennaria. The general topology of the molecular trees agrees with that based on previous morphological analyses and indicates that Antennaria is composed of six clades of equal rank, corresponding to the traditionally recognized informal groups, the Geyeriae, Argenteae, Arcuatae, Dimorphae, Pulcherrimae, and Catipes. Sequence and morphological data indicate that the Alpinae and Dioicae are unnatural, polyphyletic units that should be abandoned and redefined as the monophyletic Catipes group. Phylogenetic analysis of ITS sequences also suggests the dissociation of A. stenophylla from the Dimorphae, where it is traditionally placed, and its affiliation with the Argenteae, as well as the placement of A. arcuata in its own group.  相似文献

Summary: In the present work, we present the results of a study on the seasonal and daily activity, as well as on the raid process in Rossomyrmex minuchae. A comparative study of the annual and daily activity of the host species, Proformica longiseta, has also been made in parasitized and non-parasitized colonies. R. minuchae is an obligate slave-maker, in which the annual activity is strongly related to abiotic conditions, especially temperature and moisture of the soil. The raid process is comprised of three phases: scouting, assault of the host nest and robbing of the host brood. Recruitment of nestmates by mean of adult transport, concentration close to and invasion of the host nest, are the three tasks carried out by R. minuchae workers during the assault phase. Major differences between Rossomyrmex and Polyergus (the other obligate dulotic genus of the tribe Formicini) in terms of behaviour, both in nestmate recruitment and in the host-nest invasion, reflect different parasitic strategies in the two genera, supporting the assignment of these two genera to different phylogenetic groups.  相似文献

Ant-plant interactions in the canopy of a lowland Amazonian rainforest of the upper Orinoco, Venezuela, were studied using a modified commercial crane on rails (Surumoni project). Our observations show a strong correlation between plant sap exudates and both abundance of ants and co-occurrence of ant species in tree canopies. Two types of plant sap sources were compared: extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) and honeydew secretions by homopterans. EFNs were a frequent food source for ants on epiphytes (Philodendron spp., Araceae) and lianas (Dioclea, Fabaceae), but rare on canopy trees in the study area, whereas the majority of trees were host to aggregations of homopterans tended by honeydew-seeking ants (on 62% of the trees examined). These aggregations rarely occurred on epiphytes. Baited ant traps were installed on plants with EFNs and in the crowns of trees from three common genera, including trees with and without ant-tended homopterans: Goupia glabra (Celastraceae), Vochysia spp. (Vochysiaceae), and Xylopia spp. (Annonaceae). The number of ant workers per trap was significantly higher on plants offering one of the two plant sap sources than on trees without such resources. Extrafloral nectaries were used by a much broader spectrum of ant species and genera than honeydew, and co-occurrence of ant species (in traps) was significantly higher on plants bearing EFNs than on trees. Homopteran honeydew (Coccidae and Membracidae), on the other hand, was mostly monopolised by a single ant colony per tree. Homopteran-tending ants were generally among the most dominant ants in the canopy. The most prominent genera were Azteca, Dolichoderus (both Dolichoderinae), Cephalotes, Pheidole, Crematogaster (all Myrmicinae), and Ectatomma (Ponerinae). Potential preferences were recorded between ant and homopteran species, and also between ant-homopteran associations and tree genera. We hypothesize that the high availability of homopteran honeydew provides a key resource for ant mosaics, where dominant ant colonies and species maintain mutually exclusive territories on trees. In turn, we propose that for nourishment of numerous ants of lower competitive capacity, Philodendron and other sources of EFNs might be particularly important.  相似文献

The arboreal ant fauna was investigated in Budongo Forest, a seasonal rain forest in Uganda, using the insecticidal fogging technique. Ants were collected from 61 trees, between 7 and 33 m in height, belonging to four tree species. Trees were growing in adjacent plots of forests characterized by different use and structure: an old primary forest, a primary swamp forest along a small river, and a secondary forest where selective logging was carried out for 30 years. A total number of 37,065 ants, belonging to 161 species in 30 genera were collected. Considering the high number of species found only once, the completeness of the canopy ant fauna was relatively high and of relatively similar magnitude as samples from the Neotropics or the Oriental region. Up to 37 ant species on a single tree, with an average of 18.2 species per tree, were found. Forty-four ant species (28.1%) were found only once, less than ten individuals were found for each of 88 species (54.7%), but 64.0% of all individuals belonged to one of five species. Considering the high numerical dominance of a few ant species like a Pheidole sp., Tetramorium aculeatum (Mayr) and a Crematogaster sp., there is some evidence for an ant mosaic in the lower canopy of the Budongo Forest. Individual numbers of ants were strongly correlated with nests in the fogged tree, though the ants were not homogeneously distributed in the tree crowns. Diversity measures that strongly depend on individual numbers such as the Morisita-Horn index or rarefaction methods were calculated, but results were not concordant with those of incidence-based estimates such as jack-knife calculations. Differences in ant species richness and faunal composition between tree species were low, but more significant between forest types. The ant fauna in the secondary forest was less diverse with 12.6% fewer species compared to the primary forest sites. The average number of ant species per tree was significantly lower in the secondary forest (<20% of the species; F=8.03, df=59, P<0.01) than in the undisturbed forest types. Cataulacus, Leptothorax, Tetraponera, and Polyrhachis, which are typical canopy-dwelling ant genera, had a significantly higher diversity and frequency in the two primary forest types (F=4.17, df=53, P<0.05). Secondary forest trees are often younger, lacking dead branches and epiphytes which are important requisites for ant colonization on trees.  相似文献

During a spring cruise to the ice-covered Barents Sea in May 1997, high concentrations of Calanus glacialis eggs were found below the pack ice. Maximum abundance was 5,900 eggs m-3 directly at the ice-water interface. Vertical distribution in the water column showed a decrease with depth, indicating positive buoyancy of the eggs. The possible role of the under-ice habitat as a nursery ground for C. glacialis is suggested.  相似文献

Data on population size, breeding success and diet composition of gentoo (Pygoscelis papua), magellanic (Spheniscus magellanicus) and rockhopper (Eudyptes chrysocome) penguins, collected as part of the Falkland Island Seabird Monitoring Programme from 1986/1987 to 1998/1999, were analysed with regard to spatial and temporal variation, as well as potential interaction with local commercial fisheries. No significant population trends were detectable, mainly because of the short time-series and large spatial and inter-annual variation in the number of breeding pairs in the colonies monitored. However, the breeding success of all three penguin species has improved slightly over the last few years, indicating a potential for increasing populations in the near future. During the breeding season, all three penguin species preyed opportunistically on a mixture of fish, squid and crustaceans. Diet composition too showed a high degree of spatial and temporal variation. However, in all three penguin species studied, squid gradually disappeared from the diet over successive years, to be replaced by fish. Coincidentally, the commercial catches of the squid species Loligo gahi in Falkland Islands waters decreased and the by-catch of nototheniid fish increased. All three penguin species compete directly with the commercial fishing fleet for L. gahi; however, there may also be competition for Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides), hake (Merluccius sp.) and southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis), because juveniles of these species were found regularly in penguin diets.  相似文献

Polarella glacialis (Montresor et al.) was identified in Davis Station sea ice by morphological and DNA sequence comparison of cultures with those of the authentic strain P. glacialis CCMP 1383 isolated from McMurdo Sound. Cells and cysts of the Davis isolate (FL1B) were morphologically indistinguishable from P. glacialis, and comparison of the large subunit rDNA of both cultures demonstrated only 0.2% sequence divergence over 1366 base pairs. The photosynthetic pigments of P. glacialis (strains FL1B and CCMP 1383) were typical of dinoflagellates, with peridinin (contributing up to 31%) as the major accessory pigment. Extremely high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA, up to 76.3%) were characteristic of P. glacialis isolate FL1B. The high PUFA concentration of this species is thought to be an adaptation to survive the cold temperatures of the upper fast ice. The sterol profile of FL1B was atypical of dinoflagellates, with 4‐desmethylsterols (up to 79%) in greater abundance than 4α‐methyl sterols (up to 24%). 27‐Nor‐24‐methylcholest‐5,22E‐dien‐3β‐ol was identified as the principle sterol in P. glacialis, contributing up to 64% of the total sterol composition.  相似文献

Nuclear genome size of conifers as measured by flow cytometry with propidium iodide was investigated, striving to collect at least a single species from each genus. 64 out of 67 genera and 172 species were measured. Of the 67 genera, 21 are reported here for the first time and the same is true for 76 species. This nearly doubles the number of measured genera and adds 50% to the number of analyzed species. Conifers have chromosome numbers in the range of n = (7)10–12(19). However, the nuclear DNA content (2C‐value) is shown here to range from 8.3 to 71.6 picogram. The largest genome contains roughly 6 × 1010 more base pairs than the smallest genome. Genome sizes are evaluated and compared with available taxonomic treatments. For the mainly (sub)tropical Podocarpaceae small genome sizes were found with a 2C‐value of only 8–28 pg, with 13.5 pg on average. For the Taxaceae 2C‐values from 23–60 pg were determined. Not surprisingly, the genus Pinus with 97 species (39 species measured here) has a broad range with 2C = 38–72 pg. A factor of 2 difference is also found in the Cupressaceae (136 species) with nuclear DNA contents in the range 18–35 pg. Apart from the allohexaploid Sequoia, ploidy plays a role only in Juniperus and some new polyploids are found. The data on genome size support conclusions on phylogenetic relationships obtained by DNA sequencing. Flow cytometry is applicable even to young plants or seeds for the monitoring of trade in endangered species.  相似文献

Summary. The polygynous invasive ant Lasius neglectus was described from Budapest, Hungary, as an unicolonial species, with no apparent colony barriers, and inferred intra-nidal mating without a nuptial flight. Here we analyze additional morphological characteristics of gynes, their physiological condition at emergence and at the time of mating and we describe the productivity of different types of colony founding in the laboratory. A low increase in dry weight and in fat content from emergence to mating indicates that gynes can only succeed in dependent colony founding. However, the queen-worker thorax volume ratio is typical of a species with independent colony founding and we were able to demonstrate independent colony founding in the laboratory (both haplo- and pleometrotic). Brood development in independent founding is rapid and the number of nanitics higher than in other Lasius species. Both colony budding and dependent colony founding could also be demonstrated in the laboratory. Worker oviposition was absent. The carbohydrate content of newly mated queens is consistent with the observed loss of mating flight of this species. However the relative wing area clearly indicates that L. neglectus queens should be able to fly. Therefore, both queen morphology and physiological state at maturity show that L. neglectus is intermediate between a monogynous, free-living, non pest ant and a multiqueened (polygynic) invasive tramp ant. This neglected ant thus offers interesting opportunities to study the origin of unicoloniality and the spread of this species in northeast Spain.  相似文献

Summary: Communality is considered a widespread form of social organization in bees and wasps, one in which two or more females of the same generation share a common nest and amongst whom there is no reproductive division of labor. The evolution and maintenance of egalitarian communal societies poses theoretical difficulties where 'cheating' amongst nestmates is practised. Yet there is little knowledge of the intranidal social interactions among communal conspecifics that allow an understanding of the degree of cooperation versus exploitation amongst nestmates in such societies. Using a circle-tube arena, we staged interactions in the laboratory among pairs of female conspecifics using two communal andrenid species, Andrena scotica and Panurgus calcaratus, to score their cooperative and aggressive behaviors. For both species, females did not discriminate between familiar (nestmate) and unfamiliar (non-nestmate) conspecifics in their cooperative and aggressive behaviors, suggesting that there is universal acceptance of conspecifics. Levels of cooperation and aggression did not vary with the number of nestmates in the nest of origin for either species. In addition, frequencies of social interactions did not vary with body size, wing wear or ovarian development in P. calcaratus. Interspecific comparisons were made with published data on social interactions of other bee species at varying levels of social organization (solitary to eusocial) derived from analogous circle-tube experiments. Panurgus calcaratus displayed highly cooperative behavior, similar to that of a previously studied communal bee, Lasioglossum hemichalceum (Kukuk, 1992a). Andrena scotica displayed lower levels of cooperation, and was in this sense more similar to solitary species and to interactions amongst non-nestmate individuals of eusocial species. Both A. scotica and P. calcaratus displayed very low levels of aggressive behavior, again similar to L. hemichalceum. As a working hypothesis, we suggest the existence of a communal behavioral syndrome comprising high levels of intranidal cooperation and low aggression, both directed indiscriminately at conspecifics.  相似文献

Changes in growing season temperature and duration may have profound effects on the population dynamics of arctic and alpine plant species in snow-bed and fell-field habitats. We examined how a typical herbaceous pioneer species, Ranunculus glacialis, responded to experimental climate change in open-top chambers for three seasons at an alpine site in southern Norway. Warming had no significant effect on any reproductive, growth or phenological variables, except for seed weight, which increased significantly during the first 2 ears. Despite large differences in average date of snowmelt among years, average reproductive output and ramet size differed little among years. Within-year variation in date of snowmelt had no impact on seed number or weight in either control or warmed plots. Leaf width and ramet leaf number decreased significantly with later snowmelt within a year. Experimental warming reduced the negative effect on ramet size of late snowmelt within a year to some extent. In general, R. glacialis reacts contrary to most other arctic/alpine species to experimental warming. Species with such low responsiveness to environmental conditions may be particularly vulnerable to climatic change, especially if their habitat is invaded by other species with higher phenotypic plasticity and a better competitive ability.  相似文献

Interaction between the El Niño and Indian Ocean dipole ocean-atmosphere quasi-periodic oscillations produced one of the warmest seawater temperatures on record in 1998. During the warm northeast monsoon in March and April, Kenya's shallow coral reefs experienced water temperatures between 30 and 31 °C and low winds. This caused large-scale bleaching of hard and soft corals at the end of March, which extended into the cooler months of May and June. Direct observations of coloration in the Mombasa Marine National Park found that the coral genera Acropora, Millepora, Pocillopora, branching Porites and Stylophora showed rapid bleaching and high mortality by the end of May 1998. Other hard coral genera that bleached significantly included Echinopora, Favia, Favites, Galaxea, Hydnophora, Goniopora, Leptoria, Montipora, Platygyra and massive Porites, but mortality was variable among these genera. Astreopora, Coscinarea, Cyphastrea and Pavona were the least responsive genera, with some paling, but little evidence of full bleaching or significant mortality. We compared changes in reef ecology in four national parks (protected from fishing) with four non-park areas (heavy fishing) to determine how coral mortality and herbivory interact under the two management regimes. Benthic studies using line transects in 16 sites spread across ~150 km of coastline were completed before and 6 to 13 months after the bleaching event and found that the cover of nine hard coral genera including Acropora, Alveopora, Favites, Goniopora, Platygyra, Pocillopora, branching Porites, Stylophora and Tubipora decreased significantly (p<0.04) after the event, usually by >85%, and soft coral cover decreased by ~75%. One year after the bleaching, sites in the national parks experienced 88 and 115% increases in turf and fleshy algal cover, respectively, while reefs outside the parks had a 220% increase in fleshy algal cover with no appreciable change in turf-forming algal cover. There was, however, high spatial variation and no statistically significant difference in the change in fleshy algal cover between sites in and out of the national parks. Estimates of herbivory by both fish and sea urchins at each site were a good predictor of the change in fleshy algal cover over the 1-year post-bleaching period in about half of the sites. The other half of the sites did not exhibit large changes in fleshy algal cover, and algal cover at these sites was not clearly influenced by herbivory. The number of coral genera per transect at each site decreased significantly by 31 and 44% in and out of the national parks respectively. Larger-scale search sampling to determine the presence/absence of genera in study sites found consistent losses of coral genera from sites, but produced smaller differences than the line-transect method, suggesting that some genera persisted, but at very low population densities and small colony sizes.  相似文献

Hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L em Thell) is derived from a complex hybridization procedure involving three diploid species carrying the A, B and D genomes, respectively. We recently isolated microsatellites from a T. tauschii library enriched for various motifs and evaluated the transferability of these markers to several diploid species carrying the A, B or D genomes. All of the primer pairs amplifying more than one locus on bread wheat and half of those giving D-genome-specific loci gave an amplification product on A-and/or B-diploid species. All of the markers giving a single amplification product for T. tauschii and no amplification on the other diploid species were D-genome-specific at the hexaploid level. The non-specific microsatellite markers (which gave an amplification product on diploid species carrying the A, B or D genome) gave either a complex amplification pattern on bread wheat (with several bands) or generated a single band which mapped to the D genome. Southern blot hybridizations with probes corresponding to the microsatellite flanking regions gave a signal on all diploid and hexaploid species, whatever the specificity of the microsatellite. The patterns observed on bread wheat were generally in accordance with those observed for diploid species, with slight rearrangements. This suggests that the specificity of microsatellite markers is probably due to mutations in microsatellite flanking regions rather than sequence elimination during polyploidization events and that genome stringency is higher at the polyploid than at the diploid level.  相似文献

Solitary parasitoids of colony-forming hosts may produce quasi-gregarious broods, which favours sibmating on the natal patch and local mate competition (LMC). We examined seasonal variations in brood size and sex ratio in three species of solitary parasitoids of aphids associated with trophobiotic ants. Adialytus arvicola, a parasitoid of Sipha agropyrella on grasses, had the smallest broods (mean=4.2, maximum 19), while Lysiphlebus hirticornis, a parasitoid of Metopeurum fuscoviride on tansy, had the largest broods (mean=32.0, maximum 265). In Pauesia pini, a parasitoid of Cinara piceicola on Norway spruce, broods comprised an average of 5.8 (maximum 41) individuals; brood size increased during early summer when hosts became more available but remained the same later in the season. In all three species the sex ratio at eclosion was female-biased, with broods containing approximately two daughters for each son in both A. arvicola and L. hirticornis; the degree of female-bias was least in P. pini. The sex ratio did not vary with brood size. In A. arvicola, the variance of the number of sons declined with an increase in brood size, consistent with "precise" sex allocation. In contrast, in L. hirticornis, the overall sex-ratio variance was greater than its binomial expectation, while it did not differ from binomial in P. pini. A large proportion of broods contained only sons or only daughters, especially in A. arvicola. An excess of male-only broods is expected if constrained females (which can produce only sons) contribute offspring prior to mating. The number of male-only broods, however, did not differ from the number expected if all females are mated and allocate offspring sexes binomially, except in P. pini. In the latter species, broods with two daughters (as opposed to two sons) exceeded binomial expectations. We propose that P. pini is largely outbreeding, while the strongly female-biased sex ratio in A. arvicola and L. hirticornis is consistent with partial sibmating and LMC. Ant-parasitoid interactions could account for a different population mating structure in the three parasitoid species. Both A. arvicola and L. hirticornis mimic the epicuticular hydrocarbon pattern of their aphid hosts. Eclosing wasps are ignored by honeydew-collecting ants and hence can mate and forage on the natal patch. In contrast, P. pini generally depart the mummy area to avoid attacks by trophobiotic ants and mate off patch.  相似文献

To enrich the genomic database of Catantopinae (Orthoptera: Acrididae), mitogenomes of three species from different genera, Traulia nigritibialis (15,701 bp), Choroedocus capensis (16,293 bp) and Stenocatantops splendens (15,574 bp), were characterized and compared with those of other grasshoppers in the subfamily. All 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs) were initiated by ATN codons except COI with ACC (C. capensis and S.splendens) and ND6 with TTG (S. splendens). All transfer RNA (tRNA) genes had a typical clover-leaf structure, except tRNASer(AGN) in which the base pairs of the dihydrouridine (DHU) arm were reduced. The phylogenetic relationships were constructed among 22 species from four subfamiles of Acrididae by classical classifications based on two datasets of their mitogenomes using both Bayesian Inference (BI) and Maximum Likelihood (ML). The phylogenetic analysis confirmed the monophyly of the three other subfamilies, but did not provided support of the monophyly of Catantopinae.  相似文献

The spermatozoon ultrastructure of four species of moss-dwelling Heterotardigrada belonging to four genera of Echiniscidae, namely Pseudechiniscus juanitae, Echiniscus duboisi, Novechiniscus armadilloides and Antechiniscus parvisentus, was investigated. In all species, the testicular male gamete is similar in morphology and in length. The spermatozoon is made up of a long head, consisting of a cylindrical acrosome and an oval or rod-shaped nuclear region which contains a nucleus with osmiophilic and electron-dense chromatin, and a tapering tail, with a "9+2" axoneme. An elongated sack-like structure originates from the posterior part of the head, extending beyond the main axis of the cell and running parallel to the tail. It consists of two parallel tubular regions which sometimes form a strict double helix and contain two voluminous, "free" mitochondria with unmodified cristae. In addition, a voluminous vesicle is present laterally to the centriole or between the end of the nucleus and the beginning of the mitochondria, limited by two cytomembranes and filled with electron-lucent and granular material. The male gametes representative of these moss-dwelling Echiniscidae are very similar to the spermatozoa of the marine Echiniscoididae Echiniscoides sigismundi. This close similarity emphasises that habitat changes have had little influence on the organisation of the sperm cell representative of Echiniscoidea. Spermatozoon characters which could be useful for phylogenetic studies on Tardigrada are discussed.  相似文献

Microfungi were isolated from different moss species in Victoria Land. Twenty-eight taxa belonging to 18 genera were identified. New records for continental Antarctica were: Arthrobotrys superba, Conidiobolus sp., Penicillium minioluteum, Verticillium psalliotae and V. lamellicola. The most frequently isolated fungal species were: Cladosporium cladosporioides, Cryptococcus albidus, Cryptococcus laurentii, Geomyces pannorum var. pannorum, G. pannorum var. vinaceus, Mortierella antarctica, Cadophora malorum, Phoma herbarum and V. lecanii. Bryum pseudotriquetrum was the moss richest in fungal species. Within the Antarctic environment, moss is one of the microhabitats richest in microfungi, particularly in psychrophilic indigenous species.  相似文献
