Lithium (Li) is a trace element that is essential in the human diet due to its importance for health and proper functioning of an organism. However, the biological activity of this metal in crop plants, which are the primary dietary sources of Li, is still poorly understood. The aim of the presented study was to comparatively analyse two Li chemical forms on the growth, as well as the l-ascorbic acid content, the Li accumulation and translocation in butterhead lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. capitata) cv. Justyna. The plants were grown in a nutrient solution enriched with Li in the form of LiCl or LiOH at the following concentrations: 0, 2.5, 20, 50 or 100 mg?Li?dm?3. The obtained results indicate that the presence of Li+ ions in the root environment reduced the yield of edible parts of the lettuce if the Li concentration in a nutrient solution had reached 20 mg?Li?dm?3. However, a yield reduction under these conditions was found to be significant only for LiOH. In plants exposed to 50 mg?Li?dm?3, both shoot and root fresh weights (FW) significantly decreased, regardless of the supplied Li chemical form. On the other hand, under the lowest LiOH dose, a significant increase in the root FW was noted, suggesting beneficial effects of Li on the growth of lettuce plants. However, applied Li concentrations and forms did not affect the l-ascorbic acid content in the lettuce leaves. Regardless of which Li form was used, Li accumulated mainly in the root tissues. An exception was the higher concentration of this metal in the shoots than in the roots of plants supplied with 100 mg?Li?dm?3 in LiCl, and there were almost the same Li concentrations in both examined organs of plants supplied with 100 mg?Li?dm?3 in LiOH. The effectiveness of Li translocation from roots to shoots rose with increasing Li concentrations in the growth medium, and this suggests a relatively ready translocation of this metal throughout the plant. Moreover, these results suggest that Li toxicity in lettuce plants is related to a high accumulation of this element in the root and shoot tissues, causing a drastic reduction in the yield, in the presence either of LiCl or LiOH, but not affecting the l-ascorbic acid accumulation in the leaves.  相似文献

Exposure of sunflower and maize plants to increasing concentrations of lithium (0?C50?mg Li dm?3) in a nutrient solution induced changes in biomass, leaf area and photosynthetic pigment accumulation, as well as levels of lipid peroxidation. The highest applied lithium dose (50?mg Li dm?3) evoked a significant reduction in the shoot biomass for both examined species, as well as necrotic spots and a reduction of the leaf area in sunflower plants. An enrichment of a nutrient solution with 5?C50?mg Li dm?3 did not significantly affect chlorophylls a and b and the carotenoid content in sunflower plants. However, in maize, a significant decrease in all pigment content under highest used lithium concentration was noted. The levels of lipid peroxidation of the cell membranes in leaves of sunflower plants and the roots of maize increased significantly in the presence of 50?mg Li dm?3, which suggests disturbances of the membrane integrity and pro-oxidant properties of the excess lithium ions. Nonetheless, in maize, an increase of shoot biomass and leaf area in the presence of 5?mg Li dm?3 was found. An analysis of the metal content indicated that lithium accumulated significantly in sunflower and maize shoots in a dose-dependent manner, but differences occurred between species. The sunflower plants accumulated considerably greater amounts of this metal than maize. The potassium content in shoots remained unchanged under lithium treatments, except for a significant increase in the potassium levels for sunflower plants grown in the presence of 50?mg Li dm?3. These results suggest that lithium at 50?mg Li dm?3 is toxic to both plant species, but the symptoms of toxicity are species-specific. Moreover, the lithium influence on plants is dose-dependent and its ions can exert toxicity at high concentrations (50?mg Li dm?3) or stimulate growth at low concentrations (5?mg Li dm?3).  相似文献

High-temperature stress (HT) is one of the most dramatic abiotic stresses, reducing crop yield significantly. Hormone application has been seen as one of most effective approaches in ameliorating HT stress-induced detrimental effects in plants. 24-Epibrassinolide (EBL) is an active by-product produced during brassinolide biosynthesis and can induce thermo-tolerance in plants by playing multiple roles in different metabolic processes. EBL application improves or protects plant growth and development under HT stress by improving the process of development and by protecting different plant growth stages from HT stress. Shortly, EBL improves plant growth and yield by improving germination, pollen development, pollen germination, biomass production and the source-to-sink relationship under HT stress. Moreover, EBL also enhances carbon assimilation rate, maintains positive redox potential and increases solute accumulation. EBL also increases the production of heat shock proteins (HSPs) to further cope with HT stress. In conclusion, EBL is a very impressive phyto-hormone, which can ameliorate HT stress-induced detrimental effects in plants. In this review article, potential mechanisms are discussed with respect to EBL-induced thermo-tolerance in plants.

This article attempts to explain that parasitoids provide the evolutionary pressure responsible for relationships between habitat use and larval food plant use in herbivorous insects. Three species of butterflies of the genus Pieris, P. rapae, P. melete, and P. napi use different sets of cruciferous plants. They prefer different habitats composed of similar sets of cruciferous plants. In our study, P. rapae used temporary habitats with ephemeral plants, P. melete used permanent habitat with persistent plants, although they also used temporary habitats, and P. napi used only permanent habitat. The choice experiment in the field cages indicated that each of the three butterfly species avoided oviposition on plants usually unused in its own habitat, but accepted the unused plants which grew outside its own habitat. Their habitat use and plant use were not explained by intrinsic plant quality examined in terms of larval performance. Pieris larvae collected from persistent plants or more long lasting habitats were more heavily parasitized by two specialist parasitoids, the braconid wasp Cotesia glomerata and the tachinid fly Epicampocera succincta. The results suggest that Pieris habitat and larval food plant use patterns can be explained by two principles. The evolution of habitat preference may have been driven by various factors including escape from parasitism. Once habitat preference has evolved, selection favors the evolution of larval food plant preferences by discriminating against unsuitable plants, including those which are associated with high parasitism pressures. Female parasitoids distinguish between host-infested and intact plants using chemical cues; however, the contribution of intact plants to host searching of parasitoids has not been investigated so far. Here, we tested how host-searching behavior of the parasitoid wasp, Cotesia kariyai (Watanabe) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), was affected by intact maize plants in a wind tunnel. To determine the best color for material to create a plant model, we observed flight responses of female wasps to paper plant models of four different colors. Wasps tended to land more frequently on green models than other models. Therefore, a green paper model was used for subsequent experiments. In a no-choice test, female wasps showed higher landing rates on a paper plant model treated with herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) than on an intact plant. Moreover, in two-choice tests, wasps preferred the plant model with HIPVs over an intact plant with HIPVs. Intact plants seem to deter C. kariyai females. Our findings suggest that information from intact plants also contributes to the host-searching behavior of females in the natural environment.

Fluoride is a common pollutant which occurs in various environmental matrices considered as one of the most phytotoxic pollutants. It is essential to the living organisms in trace quantities but at its higher concentration it becomes poisonous. Excess amount of fluoride in environment not only exerts its toxic effects on human beings and animals but also on plants. Toxicological impacts of fluoride on plants have been largely debated due to reduction of growth parameters, inhibition of metabolic activities and decreased photosynthetic activity. The signs of fluoride impacts on plants may be severe, acute or chronic and toxicity of fluoride depends on dose, frequency of exposure, duration and genotype of plant. This article overviews understanding of transport, uptake and fluoride accumulation in plants and provide insights into the fluoride-induced oxidative stress and regulatory mechanisms to cope up with it. The main objective of this article is to prospect new research avenues to unravel the mechanisms explaining fluoride toxicity in various plant species.  相似文献

Abstract

High content of chromium in plants hampers plants’ metabolism, disrupts plant growth and development. Therefore, improving plants’ tolerance to Cr toxicity is very essential. In our present study, we investigated the role of citric acid (CA) on chromium detoxification in terms of stress tolerance in rice. Application of CA under Cr stress restore the growth parameters, total protein content and membrane stability confirming that CA plays important role in Cr detoxification in rice. However, supplementation of CA under Cr stress caused no significant change in root Cr content but increased shoot Cr concentration (97?µg/g) compare with Cr stressed plant (24?µg/gm), suggesting that CA alleviates Cr toxicity by its chelating properties. Moreover, Fe content showed no significant changes due to CA supplementation under Cr stress, implying that Fe regulation is not involved with CA-mediated mitigation of Cr toxicity in rice. Furthermore, increased CAT, POD, and GR activity along with raised metabolites (glutathione and proline) indicates active participation in ROS scavenging and palliate the Cr toxicity in rice.  相似文献

Over the past 30 years, research on the microbial degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has resulted in the isolation of numerous genera of bacteria, fungi and algae capable of degrading low molecular weight PAHs (compounds containing three or less fused benzene rings). High molecular weight PAHs (compounds containing four or more fused benzene rings) are generally recalcitrant to microbial attack, although some fungi and algae are capable of transforming these compounds. Until recently, only a few genera of bacteria have been isolated with the ability to utilise four-ring PAHs as sole carbon and energy sources while cometabolism of five-ring compounds has been reported. The focuss of this review is on the high molecular weight PAH benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). There is concern about the presence of BaP in the environment because of its carcinogenicity, teratogenicity and toxicity. BaP has been observed to accumulate in marine organisms and plants which could indirectly cause human exposure through food consumption. This review provides an outline of the occurrence of BaP in the environment and the ability of bacteria, fungi and algae to degrade the compound, including pathways for BaP degradation by these organisms. In addition, approaches for improving microbial degradation of BaP are discussed.  相似文献

Due to the enormous importance of plants as a source of both food and raw materials, an understanding of the control of their growth and development is imperative. Basic to this understanding is the identification of the genes that enable the plant to adapt to its environment while at the same time adhering to its basic developmental plan. The aims of this review are first to briefly summarize the various approaches that have been used to identify these plant signaling genes and second to give an overview of the genes that have been cloned so far and what these genes may tell us about the nature of signal transduction in plants.

The advent of modern molecular biology and molecular genetics has revolutionized our ability to unravel the complexities of plant signal transduction pathways. A whole battery of techniques are now available to identify the genes that control the plants development and ability to adapt to its environment.65 Each technique has its own strengths and weaknesses and must be carefully selected by the researcher according to the question that he or she would like to ask.  相似文献

Abstract

Italy is among the European countries with the greatest plant diversity due to both a great environmental heterogeneity and a long history of man–environment interactions. Trait-based approaches to ecological studies have developed greatly over recent decades worldwide, although several issues concerning the relationships between plant functional traits and the environment still lack sufficient empirical evaluation. To draw insights on the association between plant functional traits and direct and indirect human and natural pressures on the environmental drivers, this article summarizes the existing knowledge on this topic by reviewing the results of studies performed in Italy adopting a functional trait approach on vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens. Although we recorded trait measurements for 1418 taxa, our review highlighted some major gaps in plant traits knowledge: Mediterranean ecosystems are poorly represented; traits related to belowground organs are still overlooked; traits measurements for bryophytes and lichens are lacking. Finally, intraspecific variation has been little studied at community level so far. We conclude by highlighting the need for approaches evaluating trait–environment relationship at large spatial and temporal scales and the need of a more effective contribution to online databases to tie more firmly Italian researchers to international scientific networks on plant traits.  相似文献

The zoophytophagous feeding habits of larvae and adults of the rove beetle, Philonthus quisquiliarius (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), are reported for the first time. This study evaluates the effects of different feeding regimes on its growth and reproductive performance (i.e., larval growth, adult weight gain, consumption, fecundity and fertility) and digestive physiology. Larvae presented similar growth rates when fed on living animal or on green plant material for 48h. However, higher consumption rates and lower efficiencies of conversion of digested matter to body mass were obtained when leaves were consumed. Adults presented also positive weight gains regardless of the food consumed (plant or animal material). Interestingly, the highest weight gain rate and efficiency of digestion resulted when adults fed on a rearing diet containing nutrients from both animals and plants. Moreover, we have found negative effects upon P. quisquiliarius fecundity and fertility when supplemental plant nutrients were removed from the optimum rearing diet. Physiological adaptations to allow trophic switching between predation and phytophagy have been found, such as the higher ratio of α-amylase activity to protease activity to deal with the inverted protein-carbohydrate ratio of plant versus animal tissues. Furthermore, this species has an arsenal of digestive proteases whose activity is affected by the type of diet ingested. All together, our results suggest that P. quisquiliarius needs certain nutrients, which are obtained only from plant material. This knowledge will help to understand the complex trophic interactions that occur in agroecosystems.  相似文献

Abstract

Nanotechnology has been proposed as an important tool and strategy for applying new products in agriculture at the nanometer scale in order to improve the food crop at sustainability and productivity levels for contributing with the agriculture security. Nanoparticles (NPs) have been planted as an intelligent material with a large contact surface per unit mass respect to bulk-products, allowing its effect to be exerted with greater efficiency in a specific point on a plant target. Currently, NPs have been studied to be applied to various species of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants. Some NPs properties such as concentration, shape, size, composition and surface functionality have the ability to regulate the NPs growth effects on the plant during germination and seedling stages under controlled and field conditions. Furthermore, several studies have tried to explain the mechanism of uptake, translocation and accumulation of NPs inside the plant at the organ and cell level, but further studies are needed to determine specific mechanisms and exact action. Nevertheless, evaluation of the toxicity effects of NPs on physiological indexes of the plant is needed to determine the effective dose without producing adverse effects on the plant and food chain. It is noteworthy that studies have indicated that nanoparticles, regardless of their nature, can be efficient inducers of plant growth. However, a series of laboratory tests are required to optimize their application conditions and their specific physiological impact on plants. In this review, we summarize the knowledge about NPs application to induce plant growth to direct future studies in order to propose NPs for technological innovation.  相似文献

Plant secondary metabolites are unique sources for pharmaceuticals, food additives, flavors, and industrially important biochemicals. Accumulation of such metabolites often occurs in plants subjected to stresses including various elicitors or signal molecules. Secondary metabolites play a major role in the adaptation of plants to the environment and in overcoming stress conditions. Environmental factors viz. temperature, humidity, light intensity, the supply of water, minerals, and CO2 influence the growth of a plant and secondary metabolite production. Drought, high salinity, and freezing temperatures are environmental conditions that cause adverse effects on the growth of plants and the productivity of crops. Plant cell culture technologies have been effective tools for both studying and producing plant secondary metabolites under in vitro conditions and for plant improvement. This brief review summarizes the influence of different abiotic factors include salt, drought, light, heavy metals, frost etc. on secondary metabolites in plants. The focus of the present review is the influence of abiotic factors on secondary metabolite production and some of important plant pharmaceuticals. Also, we describe the results of in vitro cultures and production of some important secondary metabolites obtained in our laboratory.  相似文献

In this ethnobotanical study, the authors provide the first quantitative analysis of the use of wild edible plants in Estonia, describing the domains and assessing the food importance of different species. The information was collected using free‐listing written questionnaires and concerned plants used by the respondents in their childhood. As part of a major study, this article covers the responses of professionals with some botanical education at vocational or university level, to ensure the greatest possible reliability without using voucher specimens. Fifty‐eight respondents provided information on the use of 137 plant taxa, corresponding to approximately 6% of the native and naturalized vascular plants of Estonia. According to use frequency, the most typical wild food plant of Estonia is a fruit, eaten raw as a snack. The results clearly signal that the majority of famine and food shortage plants had already been forgotten by the end of the 20th century, but new plants have been introduced as green vegetables for making salads. Despite changes in the nomenclature of the plants, the use of wild food plants in Estonia was still thriving at the turn of the 20th century, covering many domains already forgotten in urbanized modern Europe. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 172 , 239–253.  相似文献

Many plants have been known to be contaminated and accumulate plasticizers from the environment, including water sources, soil, and atmosphere. Plasticizers are used to confer elasticity and flexibility to various fiber and plastic products. Consumption of plasticizers can lead to many adverse effects on human health, including reproductive and developmental toxicity, endocrine disruption, and cancer. Herein, we report for the first time that two plasticizers, bis(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHT) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), have been isolated from the leaves of Capparis spinosa L. (the caper bush), a plant that is widely used in food seasonings and traditional medicine. 297 mg/kg of DEHT and 48 mg/kg of DEHP were isolated from dried and grounded C. spinosa L. leaves using column chromatography and semi-preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. Our study adds to the increase in the detection of plasticizers in our food and medicinal plants and to the alarming concern about their potential adverse effects on human health.  相似文献

Heavy metal contamination of soil, aqueous waste stream and ground water causes major environmental and human health problems. Heavy metals are major environmental pollutants when they are present in high concentration in soil and show potential toxic effects on growth and development in plants. Due to unabated, indiscriminate and uncontrolled discharge of hazardous chemicals including heavy metals into the environment, plant continuously have to face various environmental constraints. In plants, seed germination is the first exchange interface with the surrounding medium and has been considered as highly sensitive to environmental changes. One of the crucial events during seed germination entails mobilization of seed reserves which is indispensable for the growth of embryonic axis. But, metabolic alterations by heavy metal exposure are known to depress the mobilization and utilization of reserve food by affecting the activity of hydrolytic enzymes. Some plants possess a range of potential mechanisms that may be involved in the detoxification of heavy metals by which they manage to survive under metal stress. High tolerance to heavy metal toxicity could rely either on reduced uptake or increase planned internal sequestration which is manifested by an interaction between a genotype and its environment. Such mechanism involves the binding of heavy metals to cell wall, immobilization, exclusion of the plasma membrane, efflux of these toxic metal ions, reduction of heavy metal transport, compartmentalization and metal chelation by tonoplast located transporters and expression of more general stress response mechanisms such as stress proteins. It is important to understand the toxicity response of plant to heavy metals so that we can utilize appropriate plant species in the rehabilitation of contaminated areas. Therefore, in the present review attempts have been made to evaluate the effects of increasing level of heavy metal in soils on the key behavior of hydrolytic and nitrogen assimilation enzymes. Additionally, it also provides a broad overview of the strategies adopted by plants against heavy metal stress.  相似文献

Previous studies of desert tortoise foraging ecology in the western Mojave Desert suggest that these animals are selective herbivores, which alter their diet according to the temporal availability of preferred food plants. These studies, however, did not estimate availability of potential food plants by taking into account the spatial and temporal variability in ephemeral plant abundance that occurs within the spring season. In this study, we observed 18 free-ranging adult tortoises take 35,388 bites during the spring foraging season. We also estimated the relative abundance of potential food plants by stratifying our sampling across different phenological periods of the 3-month long spring season and by different habitats and microhabitats. This methodology allowed us to conduct statistical tests comparing tortoise diet against plant abundance. Our results show that tortoises choose food plants non-randomly throughout the foraging season, a finding that corroborates the hypothesis that desert tortoises rely on key plants during different phenological periods of spring. Moreover, tortoises only consumed plants in a succulent state until the last few weeks of spring, at which time most annuals and herbaceous perennials had dried and most tortoises had ceased foraging. Many species of food plants—including several frequently eaten species—were not detected in our plant surveys, yet tortoises located these rare plants in their home ranges. Over 50% of bites consumed were in the group of undetected species. Interestingly, tortoises focused heavily on several leguminous species, which could be nutritious foods owing to their presumably high nitrogen contents. We suggest that herbaceous perennials, which were rare on our study area but represented ~30% of tortoise diet, may be important in sustaining tortoise populations during droughts when native annuals are absent. These findings highlight the vulnerability of desert tortoises to climate change if such changes alter the availability of their preferred food plants.  相似文献

Precipitation changes may induce shifts in plant species or life form dominance in ecosystems, making some previously subordinate species abundant. The plasticity of certain plant functional traits of these expanding subordinate species may be one possible mechanism behind their success. In this study, we tested if the subordinate winter annual grass Secale sylvestre shows plasticity in growth and reproduction in response to altered environment associated with field-scale rainfall manipulations (severe drought, moderate drought, and watering) in a semiarid grassland, and whether the maternal environment influences offspring germination or growth in a subsequent pot experiment. Compared to control plots, S. sylvestre plants grew 38% taller, and produced 32% more seeds in severe drought plots, while plants in watered plots were 17% shorter, and had 22% less seeds. Seed mass was greatest in severe drought plots. Plants growing in drought plots had offspring with enhanced juvenile shoot growth compared to the progeny whose mother plants grew in watered plots. These responses are most likely explained by the decreased cover of previously dominant perennial grasses in severe drought plots, which resulted in wetter soil compared to control and watered plots during the peak growth of S. sylvestre. We conclude that the plasticity of this subordinate annual species in response to changing environment may help to gain dominance with recurring droughts that suppress perennial grasses. Our results highlight that exploring both within-generation and transgenerational plasticity of subordinate species may lead to a better prediction of changes in plant species dominance under climate change.

Abstract

Phytoremediation is the use of plants for the treatment of environmental pollution, including chlorinated organics. although conceptually very attractive, removal and biodegradation of chlorinated pollutants by plants is a rather slow and inefficient process resulting in incomplete treatment and potential release of toxic metabolites into the environment. In order to overcome inherent limitations of plant metabolic capabilities, plants have been genetically modified, following a strategy similar to the development of transgenic crops: genes from bacteria, fungi, and mammals involved in the metabolism of organic contaminants, such as cytochrome p-450 and glutathione substrate catabolic genes, natural or engineered, for the simultaneous remediation of a range of pollutants, such as usually found in contaminated sites, e.g., chlorinated solvent, metals, and nitroaromatics. In addition, biodegradation of many xenobiotics are catalyzed by similar, broad-substrate enzymes, such as cytochrome P-450 monoxygenases, glutathione S-transferases, and fungal peroxidases, that can potentially be used for the treatment of multiple pollutants. Moreover, the introduction of multiple transgenes involved in different phases of the metabolism of xenobiotics in plants, i.e., uptake by roots and the different phases of the green liver model, would allow enhancing both the removal and metabolism of several toxic compounds and could therefore help overcome a major limitation inherent to phytoremediation, i.e., the threat that accumulated toxic compounds would volatilize or otherwise contaminate the food chain. An important barrier to the application of transgenic plants for bioremediation in the field is associated with the true or perceived risk of horizontal gene transfer to related wild or cultivated plants. Therefore, it is likely that the next generation of transgenic plants will involve systems preventing such a transfer, for instance by the introduction of transgenes into chloroplastic DNA or the use of conditional lethality genes (Davison, 2005). Since bacteria naturally exchange plasmids via conjugation, endophytes that gain genes involved in pollutant degradation might not be considered ‘genetically modified’ and may be subject to fewer restrictions in usage.  相似文献
